A novel quadrature Doppler Backscattering (DBS) system has been developed and optimized for the E-band (60-90GHz) frequency range using either O-mode or X-mode polarization in DIII-D plasmas. In general, DBS measures the amplitude of density fluctuations and their velocity in the lab frame. The system can simultaneously monitor both low-frequency turbulence (f < 10MHz) and radiofrequency plasma density fluctuations over a selectable frequency range (20-500 MHz). Detection of high-frequency fluctuations has been demonstrated for low harmonics of the ion cyclotron frequency (e.g., 2fci~23MHz) and externally driven high-frequency helicon waves (f = 476MHz) using an adjustable frequency down conversion system. Importantly, this extends the application of DBS to a high-frequency spectral domain while maintaining important turbulence and flow measurement capabilities. This unique system has low phase noise, good temporal resolution (sub-millisecond) and excellent wavenumber coverage (k_{\theta} ~ 1-20cm^{-1} and k_r ~ 20-30cm^{-1}). As a demonstration, localized internal DIII-D plasma measurements are presented from turbulence (f <= 5MHz), Alfvenic waves (f~6.5MHz), ion cyclotron waves (f >= 20MHz) as well as fluctuations around 476MHz driven by an external high-power 476 MHz helicon wave antenna. In the future, helicon measurements will be used to validate GENRAY and AORSA modeling tools for prediction of helicon wave propagation, absorption and current drive location for the newly installed helicon current drive system on DIII-D., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figs, journal paper

The Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX) is a steady state linear device with the goal to perform plasma material interaction (PMI) studies at future fusion reactor relevant conditions. A prototype of MPEX referred as Porto-MPEX is designed to carry out research and development related to source, heating and transport concepts on the planned full MPEX device. The auxiliary heating schemes in MPEX are based on cyclotron resonance heating with radio frequency (RF) waves. Ion cyclotron heating (ICH) and electron cyclotron heating (ECH) in MPEX are used to independently heat the ions and electrons and provide fusion divertor conditions ranging from sheath-limited to fully detached divertor regimes at a material target. A Hybrid Particle-In-Cell code- PICOS++ is developed and applied to understand the plasma parallel transport during ICH heating in MPEX Proto-MPEX to the target. With this tool, evolution of the distribution function of MPEX/Proto-MPEX ions is modeled in the presence of (1) Coulomb collisions, (2) volumetric particle sources and (3) quasi-linear RF-based ICH. The code is benchmarked against experimental data from Proto-MPEX and simulation data from B2.5 EIRENE. The experimental observation of density-drop near the target in Proto-MPEX and MPEX during ICH heating is demonstrated and explained via physics-based arguments using PICOS++ modeling. In fact, the density drops at the target during ICH in Proto-MPEX/MPEX to conserve the flux and to compensate for the increased flow during ICH. Furthermore, sensitivity scans of various plasma parameters with respect to ICH power are performed for MPEX to investigate its role on plasma transport and particle and energy fluxes at the target. Finally, we discuss the pathway to model ECH in MPEX using the Hybrid PIC formulation herein presented for kinetic electrons and fluid ions.

The principal objective of this work is to report on the power coupled to a tungsten target in the Proto-MPEX device during oblique injection of a microwave beam (< 70 kW at 28 GHz) into a high-power (~100 kW at 13.56 MHz) over-dense (n_e>1E10^19 m^(-3)) deuterium helicon plasma column. The experimental setup, electron heating system, electron heating scheme, and IR thermographic diagnostic for quantifying the power transport is described in detail. It is demonstrated that the power transported to the target can be effectively controlled by adjusting the magnetic field profile. Using this method, heat fluxes up to 22 MWm-2 and power transport efficiencies in the range of 17-20% have been achieved using 70 kW of microwave power. It is observed that most of the heat flux is confined to a narrow region at the plasma periphery. Ray-tracing calculations are presented which indicate that the power is coupled to the plasma electrons via an O-X-B mode conversion process. Calculations indicate that the microwave power is absorbed in a single pass at the plasma periphery via collisions and in the over-dense region via 2nd harmonic cyclotron resonance of the electron Bernstein wave. We realize p-p'-p junctions in few-layer black phosphorus (BP) devices, and use magneto-transport measurements to study the equilibration and transmission of edge states at the interfaces of regions with different charge densities. We observe both full equilibration, where all edge channels equilibrate and are equally partitioned at the interfaces, and partial equilibration, where only equilibration only takes place among modes of the same spin polarization. Furthermore, the inner p'-region with low-doping level in the junction can function as a filter for highly doped p-regions which demonstrates gate-tunable transmission of edge channels.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a relativistic effect, where an electron moving in an electric field experiences an effective magnetic field in its rest frame. In crystals without inversion symmetry, it lifts the spin degeneracy and leads to many magnetic, spintronic and topological phenomena and applications. In bulk materials, SOC strength is a constant that cannot be modified. Here we demonstrate SOC and intrinsic spin-splitting in atomically thin InSe, which can be modified over an unprecedentedly large range. From quantum oscillations, we establish that the SOC parameter \alpha is thickness-dependent; it can be continuously modulated over a wide range by an out-of-plane electric field, achieving intrinsic spin splitting tunable between 0 and 20 meV. Surprisingly, \alpha could be enhanced by an order of magnitude in some devices, suggesting that SOC can be further manipulated. Our work highlights the extraordinary tunability of SOC in 2D materials, which can be harnessed for in operando spintronic and topological devices and applications.

A new 1D divertor plasma code, SD1D, has been used to examine the role of recombination, radiation, and momentum exchange in detachment. Neither momentum or power losses by themselves are found to be sufficient to produce a reduction in target ion flux in detachment (flux rollover); radiative power losses are required to a) limit and reduce the ionization source and b) access low-target temperature, T_target, conditions for volumetric momentum losses. Recombination is found to play little role at flux rollover, but as T_target drops to temperatures around 1eV, it becomes a strong ion sink. In the case where radiative losses are dominated by hydrogen, the detachment threshold is identified as a minimum gradient of the energy cost per ionisation with respect to T_target. This is also linked to thresholds in T_target and in the ratio of upstream pressure to power flux. A system of determining the detached condition is developed such that the divertor solution at a given T_target (or lack of one) is determined by the simultaneous solution of two equations for target ion current - one dependent on power losses and the other on momentum. Depending on the detailed momentum and power loss dependence on temperature there are regions of T_target where there is no solution and the plasma 'jumps' from high to low T_target states. The novel analysis methods developed here provide an intuitive way to understand complex detachment phenomena, and can potentially be used to predict how changes in the seeding impurity used or recycling aspects of the divertor can be utilised to modify the development of detachment., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. In rhombohedral-stacked few-layer graphene, the very flat energy bands near the charge neutrality point are unstable to electronic interactions, giving rise to states with spontaneous broken symmetries. Using transport measurements on suspended rhombohedral-stacked tetralayer graphene, we observe an insulating ground state with a large interaction-induced gap up to 80 meV. This gapped state can be enhanced by a perpendicular magnetic field, and suppressed by an interlayer potential, carrier density, or a critical temperature of ~ 40 K.

Relativistic fermions in topological quantum materials are characterized by linear energy-momentum dispersion near band crossing points. Under magnetic field, relativistic fermions acquire Berry phase of {\pi} in cyclotron motion, leading to a zeroth Landau level (LL) at the crossing point. Such field-independent zeroth LL, which distinguishes relativistic fermions from conventional electron systems, is hardly probed in transport measurements since the Fermi energy (EF) is usually not right at the band crossing points in most topological materials. Here we report the observation of exotic quantum transport behavior resulting from the zeroth LL in a multiband topological semimetal YbMnBi2 which possesses linear band crossings both at and away from the Fermi level (FL). We show that the Dirac bands with the crossing points being above or below the FL leads to Shubnikov de-Haas oscillations in the in-plane magnetoresistance, whereas the Dirac bands with the crossing points being at the FL results in unusual angular dependences of the out-of-plane magnetoresistance and in-plane Hall resistivity due to the dependence of the zeroth LL's degeneracy on field orientation. Our results shed light on the transport mechanism of the zeroth LL's relativistic fermions in layered materials.

We report experimental signatures of plasmonic effects due to electron tunneling between adjacent graphene layers. At sub-nanometer separation, such layers can form either a strongly coupled bilayer graphene with a Bernal stacking or a weakly coupled double-layer graphene with a random stacking order. Effects due to interlayer tunneling dominate in the former case but are negligible in the latter. We found through infrared nano-imaging that bilayer graphene supports plasmons with a higher degree of confinement compared to single- and double-layer graphene, a direct consequence of interlayer tunneling. Moreover, we were able to shut off plasmons in bilayer graphene through gating within a wide voltage range. Theoretical modeling indicates that such a plasmon-off region is directly linked to a gapped insulating state of bilayer graphene: yet another implication of interlayer tunneling. Our work uncovers essential plasmonic properties in bilayer graphene and suggests a possibility to achieve novel plasmonic functionalities in graphene few-layers., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

Using transport measurements, we investigate multicomponent quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnetism in dual-gated rhombohedral trilayer graphene (r-TLG), in which the real spin, orbital pseudospin and layer pseudospins of the lowest Landau level form spontaneous ordering. We observe intermediate quantum Hall plateaus, indicating a complete lifting of the degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level (LL) in the hole-doped regime. In charge neutral r-TLG, the orbital degeneracy is broken first, and the layer degeneracy is broken last and only the in presence of an interlayer potential U. In the phase space of U and filling factor, we observe an intriguing hexagon pattern, which is accounted for by a model based on crossings between symmetry-broken LLs.

Because of its large density-of-states and the 2{\pi} Berry phase near its low-energy band-contact points, neutral bilayer graphene (BLG) at zero magnetic field (B) is susceptible to chiral-symmetry breaking, leading to a variety of gapped spontaneous quantum Hall states distinguished by valley and spin-dependent quantized Hall conductivities. Among these, the layer antiferromagnetic state, which has quantum valley Hall (QVH) effects of opposite sign for opposite spins, appears to be the thermodynamic ground state. Though other gapped states have not been observed experimentally at B=0, they can be explored by exploiting their adiabatic connection to quantum Hall states with the same total Hall conductivity {\sigma}H. In this paper, by using a magnetic field to select filling factor {\nu}=2 states with {\sigma}H=2e^2/h, we demonstrate the presence of a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state for the majority spin, and a Kekul\'e state with spontaneous valley coherence and a quantum valley Hall state for the minority spin in BLG. By providing the first spectroscopic mapping of spontaneous Hall states at {\nu}=2, our results shed further light on the rich set of competing ordered states in BLG.

Due to their unique electron dispersion and lack of a Fermi surface, Coulomb interactions in undoped two-dimensional Dirac systems, such as single, bi- and tri-layer graphene, can be marginal or relevant. Relevant interactions can result in spontaneous symmetry breaking, which is responsible for a large class of physical phenomena ranging from mass generation in high energy physics to correlated states such as superconductivity and magnetism in condensed matter. Here, using transport measurements, we show that rhombohedral-stacked trilayer graphene (r-TLG) offers a simple, yet novel and tunable, platform for study of various phases with spontaneous or field-induced broken symmetries. Here, we show that, contrary to predictions by tight-binding calculations, rhombohedral-stacked trilayer graphene (r-TLG) is an intrinsic insulator, with a giant interaction-induced gap {\Delta}~42meV. This insulating state is a spontaneous layer antiferromagnetic with broken time reversal symmetry, and can be suppressed by increasing charge density n, an interlayer potential, a parallel magnetic field, or a critical temperature Tc~38K. This gapped collective state can be explored for switches with low input power and high on/off ratio.

We describe the contents and functionality of the NASA Exoplanet Archive, a database and tool set funded by NASA to support astronomers in the exoplanet community. The current content of the database includes interactive tables containing properties of all published exoplanets, Kepler planet candidates, threshold-crossing events, data validation reports and target stellar parameters, light curves from the Kepler and CoRoT missions and from several ground-based surveys, and spectra and radial velocity measurements from the literature. Tools provided to work with these data include a transit ephemeris predictor, both for single planets and for observing locations, light curve viewing and normalization utilities, and a periodogram and phased light curve service. Landau level gaps are important parameters for understanding electronic interactions and symmetry-broken processes in bilayer graphene (BLG). Here we present transport spectroscopy measurements of LL gaps in double-gated suspended BLG with high mobilities in the quantum Hall regime. By using bias as a spectroscopic tool, we measure the gap {\Delta} for the quantum Hall (QH) state at filling factor {\nu}={\pm}4 and -2. The single-particle gap for {\nu}=4 scales linearly with magnetic field B and is independent of the out-of-plane electric field E. For the symmetry-broken {\nu}=-2 state, the measured values of gap are 1.1 meV/T and 0.17 meV/T for singly-gated geometry and dual-gated geometry at E=0, respectively. The difference between the two values arises from the E-dependence of the gap, suggesting that the {\nu}=-2 state is layer polarized. Our studies provide the first measurements of the gaps of the broken symmetry QH states in BLG with well-controlled E, and establish a robust method that can be implemented for studying similar states in other layered materials., Comment: revised figures and discussion

Double-gated graphene devices provide an important platform for understanding electrical and optical properties of graphene. Here we present transport measurements of single layer, bilayer and trilayer graphene devices with suspended top gates. In zero magnetic fields, we observe formation of pnp junctions with tunable polarity and charge densities, as well as a tunable band gap in bilayer graphene and a tunable band overlap in trilayer graphene. In high magnetic fields, the devices' conductance are quantized at integer and fractional values of conductance quantum, and the data are in good agreement with a model based on edge state equilibration at pn interfaces.

Surface plasmons are collective oscillations of electrons in metals or semiconductors enabling confinement and control of electromagnetic energy at subwavelength scales. Rapid progress in plasmonics has largely relied on advances in device nano-fabrication, whereas less attention has been paid to the tunable properties of plasmonic media. One such medium-graphene-is amenable to convenient tuning of its electronic and optical properties with gate voltage. Through infrared nano-imaging we explicitly show that common graphene/SiO2/Si back-gated structures support propagating surface plasmons. The wavelength of graphene plasmons is of the order of 200 nm at technologically relevant infrared frequencies, and they can propagate several times this distance. We have succeeded in altering both the amplitude and wavelength of these plasmons by gate voltage. We investigated losses in graphene using plasmon interferometry: by exploring real space profiles of plasmon standing waves formed between the tip of our nano-probe and edges of the samples. Plasmon dissipation quantified through this analysis is linked to the exotic electrodynamics of graphene. The flat bands in bilayer graphene(BLG) are sensitive to electric fields E\bot directed between the layers, and magnify the electron-electron interaction effects, thus making BLG an attractive platform for new two-dimensional (2D) electron physics[1-5]. Theories[6-16] have suggested the possibility of a variety of interesting broken symmetry states, some characterized by spontaneous mass gaps, when the electron-density is at the carrier neutrality point (CNP). The theoretically proposed gaps[6,7,10] in bilayer graphene are analogous[17,18] to the masses generated by broken symmetries in particle physics and give rise to large momentum-space Berry curvatures[8,19] accompanied by spontaneous quantum Hall effects[7-9]. Though recent experiments[20-23] have provided convincing evidence of strong electronic correlations near the CNP in BLG, the presence of gaps is difficult to establish because of the lack of direct spectroscopic measurements. Here we present transport measurements in ultra-clean double-gated BLG, using source-drain bias as a spectroscopic tool to resolve a gap of ~2 meV at the CNP. The gap can be closed by an electric field E\bot \sim13 mV/nm but increases monotonically with a magnetic field B, with an apparent particle-hole asymmetry above the gap, thus providing the first mapping of the ground states in BLG., Comment: 4 figures

As part of the NASA-CNES agreement, the NASA Star and Exoplanet Database (NStED) serves as the official US portal for the public CoRoT data products. NStED is a general purpose archive with the aim of providing support for NASA's planet finding and characterization goals. Consequently, the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI) developed, and NStED adapted, a periodogram service for CoRoT data to determine periods of variability phenomena and create phased photometric light curves. Through the NStED periodogram interface, the user may choose three different period detection algorithms to use on any photometric time series product, or even upload and analyze their own data. In a multi-layer electronic system, stacking order provides a rarely-explored degree of freedom for tuning its electronic properties. Here we demonstrate the dramatically different transport properties in trilayer graphene (TLG) with different stacking orders. At the Dirac point, ABA-stacked TLG remains metallic while the ABC counterpart becomes insulating. The latter exhibits a gap-like dI/dV characteristics at low temperature and thermally activated conduction at higher temperatures, indicating an intrinsic gap ~6 meV. In magnetic fields, in addition to an insulating state at filling factor {\nu}=0, ABC TLG exhibits quantum Hall plateaus at {\nu}=-30, \pm 18, \pm 9, each of which splits into 3 branches at higher fields. Such splittings are signatures of the Lifshitz transition induced by trigonal warping, found only in ABC TLG, and in semi-quantitative agreement with theory. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we have imaged local charge density fluctuations in monolayer graphene. By placing a small gold nanoparticle on the end of the STM tip, a charge sensor is created. By raster scanning the tip over the surface and using Coulomb blockade spectroscopy, we map the local charge on the graphene. We observe a series of electron and hole doped puddles with a characteristic length scale of about 20 nm. Theoretical calculations for the correlation length of the puddles based on the number of impurities are in agreement with our measurements., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We present a lithography-free technique for fabrication of clean, high quality graphene devices. This technique is based on evaporation through hard Si shadow masks, and eliminates contaminants introduced by lithographical processes. We demonstrate that devices fabricated by this technique have significantly higher mobility values than those by standard electron beam lithography. To obtain ultra-high mobility devices, we extend this technique to fabricate suspended graphene samples with mobility as high as 120,000 cm^2/Vs.

We investigate the effect of gold (Au) atoms in the form of both point-like charged impurities and clusters on the transport properties of graphene. Cryogenic deposition (18 K) of Au decreases the mobility and shifts the Dirac point in a manner that is consistent with scattering from point-like charged impurities. Increasing the temperature to room temperature promotes the formation of clusters, which is verified with atomic force microscopy. We find that for a fixed amount of Au impurities, the formation of clusters enhances the mobility and causes the Dirac point to shift back towards zero., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We have mapped the Dirac point in exfoliated monolayer and bilayer graphene using spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements at low temperature. The Dirac point shifts in energy at different locations in graphene. However, a cross correlation with the topography shows no correlation indicating that topographic features such as ripples are not the primary source of the variation. Rather, we attribute the shift of the Dirac point to random charged impurities located near the graphene. Our findings emphasize the need to advance exfoliated graphene sample preparation to minimize the effect of impurities., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We have performed low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on exfoliated bilayer graphene on SiO2. By varying the back gate voltage we observed a linear shift of the Dirac point and an opening of a band gap due to the perpendicular electric field. In addition to observing a shift in the Dirac point, we also measured its spatial dependence using spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The spatial variation of the Dirac point was not correlated with topographic features and therefore we attribute its shift to random charged impurities., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

We describe here the main functionalities of the LAEX (Laboratorio de Astrofisica Estelar y Exoplanetas/Laboratory for Stellar Astrophysics and Exoplanets) and NASA portals for CoRoT Public Data. The CoRoT archive at LAEX was opened to the community in January 2009 and is managed in the framework of the Spanish Virtual Observatory. NStED (NASA Star and Exoplanet Database) serves as the CoRoT portal for the US astronomical community. NStED is a general purpose stellar and exoplanet archive with the aim of providing support for NASA planet finding and characterisation goals, and the planning and support of NASA and other space missions. CoRoT data at LAEX and NStED can be accessed at http://sdc.laeff.inta.es/corotfa/ and http://nsted.ipac.caltech.edu,respectively. * Methods. Based on considerable experience with astronomical archives, the aforementioned archives are designed with the aim of delivering science-quality data in a simple and efficient way. * Results. Spin accumulation and spin precession in single-layer graphene are studied by non-local spin valve measurements at room temperature. The dependence of the non-local magnetoresistance on electrode spacing is investigated and the results indicate a spin diffusion length of ~1.6 microns and a spin injection/detection efficiency of 0.013. Electrical detection of the spin precession confirms that the non-local signal originates from spin injection and transport. Fitting of the Hanle spin precession data yields a spin relaxation time of ~84 ps and a spin diffusion length of ~1.5 microns, which is consistent with the value obtained through the spacing dependence., Comment: to appear in Applied Physics Letters. v2 corrects the fit values for P

We investigate the effects of transition metals (TM) on the electronic doping and scattering in graphene using molecular beam epitaxy combined with in situ transport measurements. The room temperature deposition of TM onto graphene produces clusters that dope n-type for all TM investigated (Ti, Fe, Pt). We also find that the scattering by TM clusters exhibits different behavior compared to 1/r Coulomb scattering. At high coverage, Pt films are able to produce doping that is either n-type or weakly p-type, which provides experimental evidence for a strong interfacial dipole favoring n-type doping as predicted theoretically., Comment: v2: revised text, additional data and analysis To appear in Phys. Graphene has emerged as an electronic material that is promising for device applications and for studying two-dimensional electron gases with relativistic dispersion near two Dirac points. Nonetheless, deviations from Dirac-like spectroscopy have been widely reported with varying interpretations. Here we show evidence for strain-induced spatial modulations in the local conductance of single-layer graphene on SiO2 substrates from scanning tunneling microscopic (STM) studies. We find that strained graphene exhibits parabolic, U-shaped conductance vs. bias voltage spectra rather than the V-shaped spectra expected for Dirac fermions, whereas V-shaped spectra are recovered in regions of relaxed graphene. Strain maps derived from the STM studies further reveal direct correlation with the local tunneling conductance. These results are attributed to a strain-induced frequency increase in the out-of-plane phonon mode that mediates the low-energy inelastic charge tunneling into graphene., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Spin-dependent properties of single-layer graphene (SLG) have been studied by non-local spin valve measurements at room temperature. Gate voltage dependence shows that the non-local magnetoresistance (MR) is proportional to the conductivity of the SLG, which is the predicted behavior for transparent ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic contacts. While the electron and hole bands in SLG are symmetric, gate voltage and bias dependence of the non-local MR reveal an electron-hole asymmetry in which the non-local MR is roughly independent of bias for electrons, but varies significantly with bias for holes., Comment: To appear in PRL

We have carried out scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on exfoliated monolayer graphene on SiO$_2$ to probe the correlation between its electronic and structural properties. Maps of the local density of states are characterized by electron and hole puddles that arise due to long range intravalley scattering from intrinsic ripples in graphene and random charged impurities. At low energy, we observe short range intervalley scattering which we attribute to lattice defects. We report on the first measurement of the thermal conductivity of a suspended single layer graphene. The measurements were performed using a non-contact optical technique. The near room-temperature values of the thermal conductivity in the range ~ 4840 to 5300 W/mK were extracted for a single-layer graphene. The extremely high value of the thermal conductivity suggests that graphene can outperform carbon nanotubes in heat conduction.

The room-temperature Raman signatures from graphene layers on sapphire and glass substrates were compared with those from graphene on GaAs substrate and on the standard Si/SiO2 substrate, which served as a reference. It was found that while G peak of graphene on Si/SiO2 and GaAs is positioned at 1580 cm-1 it is down-shifted by ~5 cm-1 for graphene-on-sapphire (GOS) and, in many cases, splits into doublets for graphene-on-glass (GOG) with the central frequency around 1580 cm-1. We investigate electronic transport in Josephson junctions formed by single-walled carbon nanotubes coupled to superconducting electrodes. We observe enhanced zero-bias conductance (up to 10e^2/h) and pronounced sub-harmonic gap structures in differential conductance, which arise from the multiple Andreev reflections at superconductor/nanotube interfaces. The voltage-current characteristics of these junctions display abrupt switching from the supercurrent branch to resistive branch, with a gate-tunable switching current ranging from 50 pA to 2.3 nA. The finite resistance observed on the supercurrent branch and the magnitude of the switching current are in good agreement with calculation based on the model of classical phase diffusion.

We carried out micro-Raman spectroscopy of graphene layers over the temperature range from approximately 80 K to 370 K. The number of layers was independently confirmed by the quantum Hall measurements and atomic force microscopy. The measured values of the temperature coefficients for the G and 2D-band frequencies of the single-layer graphene are -0.016 1/(cm K) and -0.034 1/(cm K), respectively. The G peak temperature coefficient of the bi-layer graphene and bulk graphite are -0.015 1/(cm K) and -0.011 1/(cm K), respectively.

We experimentally investigate electrical transport properties of graphene, which is a two dimensional (2D) conductor with relativistic energy dispersion relation. By investigating single- and bi-layer graphene devices with different aspect ratios, we confirm experimentally that the minimum conductivity in wide and short graphene strips approaches the theoretical value of 4e^2/\pi\h. At low temperatures, quantum interference of multiply-reflected waves of electrons and holes in graphene give rise to periodic conductance oscillations with bias and gate voltages. Thus graphene acts as a quantum billiard, a 2D ballistic, phase coherent electron system with long phase coherence length that exceeds 5 microns. Additional features in differential conductance emerge when graphene is coupled to superconducting electrodes. We observe proximity-induced enhanced conductance at low bias, and conductance dips at energy scales far above the superconducting gap of the electrodes. Excited levels were attributed to $^{81}_{31}$Ga$_{50}$ for the first time which were fed in the $\beta$-decay of its mother nucleus $^{81}$Zn produced in the fission of $^{nat}$U using the ISOL technique. We show that the structure of this nucleus is consistent with that of the less exotic proton-deficient N=50 isotones within the assumption of strong proton Z=28 and neutron N=50 effective shell effects., Comment: 4 pages, REVTeX 4, 5 figures (eps format)

This paper proposes a new Information-Time index as the basis for item selection in computerized classification testing (CCT) and investigates how this new item selection algorithm can help improve test efficiency for item pools with mixed item types. It also investigates how practical constraints such as item exposure rate control, test difficulty (i.e., cut point), test length constraint, and test time constraint affect the effectiveness of this new item selection algorithm. Monte Carlo simulation techniques were used, and item parameters from the 1996 National Assessment of Educational Progress science assessment were used to build the data pool for an assessment combining 3 grades and consisting of 246 dichotomous items and 266 polytomous items. To create an Information-Time index, a response-time distribution was simulated. The Information-Time index was found feasible and effective in CCT with a mixed item pool. The Information-Time index for item selection worked well with other testing variables like item exposure control, test difficulty, and test constraints. (Contains 2 tables and 19 references.) (SLD)
