Background: It is imperative to promote behavior/intention of taking up booster COVID-19 vaccination (BI-BV) among people who have ever contracted COVID-19 (PECC). The aims were to investigate the prevalence of BI-BV and its associations with perceived social support. Guided by the stress coping theory, we tested mediators between perceived social support and BI-BV via self-stigma, active coping, and maladaptive emotion regulation (rumination and catastrophizing). Methods: A random population-based telephone survey was conducted among adult PECC having completed the primary series of COVID-19 vaccination prior to the diagnosis; 230 participants were interviewed from June to August 2022 during the fifth (last) major outbreak in Hong Kong. The associations between the independent variables and BI-BV were tested by logistic regression analysis. A structural equation model (SEM) tested the indirect effects of the latent variables of self-stigma, active coping, and maladaptive emotion regulation between the latent variable of perceived social support and BI-BV. Results: The prevalence of BI-BV was 62.2%. It was associated with age, marital status, full-time employment, and chronic disease status. The logistic regression analysis found that BI-BV was positively associated with perceived social support (ORc = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.12– 1.54), active coping (ORc = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.10– 1.79), rumination (ORc = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.13– 2.70), and catastrophizing (ORc = 3.12, 95% CI: 1.49– 6.51) and negatively associated with self-stigma (ORc = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.72– 0.88). In the SEM analysis, the positive association between perceived social support and BI-BV was fully mediated: 1) via self-stigma (β = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.03– 0.14), 2) via active coping (β = 0.06, 95% CI: 0.02– 0.12), and 3) via self-stigma and then active coping (β = 0.01, 95% CI: 0.002– 0.04). Two of these indirect paths involved active coping. The indirect paths involving maladaptive emotion regulation were all non-significant. Conclusions: Perceived social support was associated with BI-BV, and was mediated via self-stigma, active coping, and serially self-stigma then active coping but not emotion maladaptation. The data supported the stress cognitive coping model in explaining the association between perceived social support and BI-BV. Interventions promoting BI-BV may consider modifying the observed significant factors. Future longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm the findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Internet addiction (IA) is prevalent among adolescents and imposes a serious public health threat. Familial risk and protective factors may co-exist and interact with each other to determine IA. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 9,618 Secondary 1 to 4 students in Hong Kong, China. About 16% of the surveyed students were classified as Internet addicted; nearly one third of them perceived that at least one of their family members had IA (FMIA). We found that FMIA was a risk factor (multivariate odds ratio [OR] = 2.04), and perceived family support was a protective factor (multivariate OR = 0.97) of IA. We also found a significant risk-enhancement moderation effect between these risk and protective factors, that is, the risk effect of FMIA increased with perceived family support. The finding highlights that family-based interventions, which modify familial risk and protective factors, should be effective for adolescent IA, but caution is required about potential risk-enhancement moderations between such factors.

Promotion of COVID-19 vaccination requires understanding its determinants, an important one of which is outcome expectancy. However, reliable and valid measurement tools are absent. This study thus developed and validated an Outcome Expectancy Scale for COVID-19 Vaccination (OES-COVID-19). An inductive approach was used for scale development; content validity of the items was then assessed by an independent evaluation expert panel. Iteratively, 17 scale items were created and validated in a population-based telephone survey conducted among 500 adults of the general population in Hong Kong, China, from August to September 2021. Using half of the sample (n = 249), exploratory factor analyses identified four factors of the OES-COVID-19, including (a) positive contribution to society, (b) functional benefits, (c) protective effect, and (d) negative impacts. Confirmatory factor analysis of these factors conducted on the second subsample (n = 251) was satisfactory. The OES-COVID-19 showed good psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency, absence of floor/ceiling effects, and concurrent validity. The newly created and validated OES-COVID-19 is deemed suitable for application. It may advance future studies related to COVID-19 vaccination behavior and intention, and potentially allows for comparisons across studies. Outcome expectancies involving self-directed and others-directed domains are potential determinants of completed or scheduled first-dose COVID-19 vaccination (CSFCV). This study investigated factors of CSFCV, including (a) self-directed motives [personal positive outcome expectancies (POE) and personal negative outcome expectancy (NOE)], and (b) others-directed motives (societal POE and the personality trait of prosociality). It also investigated the mediations of personal POE between societal POE and CSFCV, and moderations of prosociality between personal POE/personal NOE/societal POE and CSFCV. A cross-sectional population-based telephone survey interviewed 500 people aged 18-75 in Hong Kong in May 2021. The prevalence of CSFCV was 21.0%. Significant factors of CSFCV included personal POE (i.e., physical/practical/emotional/interpersonal benefit), personal NOE, and societal POE. The association between societal POE and CSFCV was fully mediated by the overall scale and some domains of personal POE. Furthermore, the association between physical benefit and CSFCV was stronger at lower levels of prosociality; prosociality showed a stronger effect on CSFCV at lower levels of physical benefit. The results suggest that self-directed motives might be more important than others-directed motives in affecting CSFCV. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant negative socio-political, economic, and psychological consequences. To investigate the impact of individual-level (illness representations of COVID-19) and structurally derived (anticipated social-political development in the economy, security, and social harmony in the next year) factors, and their potential moderation effects on depressive symptoms. An anonymous population-based telephone survey was conducted among the general public of Hong Kong, China during 3–10 April 2020 (n = 300, response rate 56%). Depressive symptoms were assessed by the validated Chinese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Of the participants, 8.7% showed probable moderate-to-severe depression. Hierarchical linear regression models showed that illness representations of personal/treatment control and emotional responses and anticipated deterioration in social harmony were independently and significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Anticipated deterioration in security significantly moderated the associations between perceived consequence/treatment control of COVID-19 and depressive symptoms, such that the associations were stronger among people who anticipated a strong deterioration in security. The findings suggested that perceptions of COVID-19 and future social-political development jointly and interactively contributed to depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: The prevalence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is very critical in controlling COVID-19. This study mainly aimed to (1) investigate behavioral intentions of COVID-19 vaccination under various specific scenarios, and (2) associated factors of the afore-mentioned vaccination intentions. Methods: A random anonymous telephone survey interviewed 450 Chinese adults from September 16-30, 2020 in Hong Kong, China. Nine scenarios of behavioral intentions of COVID-19 vaccinations were measured combining effectiveness (80% versus 50%), safety (rare versus common mild side effect), and cost (free versus HK$ 500). Results: The prevalence of behavioral intentions of COVID-19 vaccination under the 9 specific scenarios was very low and varied greatly (4.2% to 38.0%). The prospective countries of manufacture also influenced vaccination intention (eg, Japan: 55.8% vs China: 31.1%). Only 13.1% intended to take up COVID-19 vaccination at the soonest upon its availability. The attributes of effectiveness and side effect influenced vaccination intention most. Positively associated factors of behavioral intentions of COVID-19 vaccination included trust/satisfaction toward the government, exposure to positive social media information about COVID-19 vaccines, descriptive norms, perceived impact on the pandemic, perceived duration of protectiveness, and life satisfaction. Conclusion: Intention of COVID-19 vaccination was low in the Hong Kong general population, especially among younger people, females, and single people. Health promotion is warranted to enhance the intention. The significant factors identified in this study may be considered when designing such health promotion. Future research is required to confirm the findings in other countries. Such studies should pay attention to the specific context of cost, safety, and effectiveness, which would lead to different responses in the level of behavioral intention of COVID-19 vaccination (BICV). Background: Adolescent Internet addiction (IA) is prevalent. No study, however, has applied the health belief model (HBM) to investigate issues on IA nor investigated factors associated with intention to correct one's perceived IA problem (self‐corrective intention). Such information facilitates design of related interventions, which are warranted. Methods: This cross‐sectional study surveyed 9,618 Chinese secondary school students in Hong Kong; 4,111 (42.7%) self‐assessed that they had IA (self‐assessed IA cases); 1,145 of these self‐assessed IA cases (27.9%) were also classified as IA cases (concordant IA cases), as their Chen Internet Addiction Scale score exceeded 63. Results: The prevalence of self‐corrective intention among these two subsamples was only 28.2% and 34.1%, respectively. In the self‐assessed IA subsample, the HBM constructs including perceived susceptibility to IA [adjusted odds ratio (ORa) = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.16, 1.34], perceived severity of IA (ORa = 2.28, 95% CI = 2.09, 2.48), perceived benefits for reducing Internet use (ORa = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.18, 1.24), self‐efficacy to reduce Internet use (ORa = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.03, 1.11), and cues to action to reduce Internet use (ORa = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.11, 1.20) were positively, while perceived barriers for reducing Internet use (ORa = 0.95, 95% CI = 0.94, 0.97) were negatively, associated with self‐corrective intention. Similar factors were identified in the concordant IA subsample. Conclusions: A large proportion of the students perceived that they had IA but only about one‐third intended to correct the problem. Future interventions may consider altering students’ HBM constructs, and focus on the segment of concordant IA with self‐corrective intention, as they show readiness for changes. Background: Although the pandemic has ended officially, COVID-19 remains impactful. Booster COVID-19 vaccination is still needed to protect individuals against COVID-19 and the disease's harmful consequences. This study investigated the prevalence of the intention to get booster COVID-19 vaccination after receiving the COVID-19 diagnosis and its associated factors among people reporting prior COVID-19., Methods: A population-based anonymous telephone survey was conducted in Hong Kong, China from June to August 2022 among Chinese people reporting prior COVID-1 between February and August 2022 and having taken up ≥2 doses of COVID-19 vaccines prior to COVID-19 diagnosis., Results: The prevalence of the intention to get booster vaccination was 59.2 %. Older age (>60 years), being currently married, not employed full-time, and having chronic diseases were positively associated with the intention to get booster vaccination. Adjusted for the background factors, higher levels of the cognitive factors of perceived susceptibility to COVID-19, perceived acquired moderate-to-strong immunity against COVID-19, and perceived adequate knowledge of COVID-19 were positively associated with the intention to get booster vaccination; stronger perceived severity of prior infection despite vaccination was negatively associated with the intention outcome. In contrast, stronger mental distress due to COVID-19, illness concern, and emotional representation were positively associated with the intention. Self-perceived long COVID status was not a significant factor., Discussion: The prevalence of the intention to get booster COVID-19 vaccination was limited, especially among younger people reporting prior COVID-19. Health promotion is still required among people reporting prior COVID-19 and may emphasize the significant cognitive factors positively associated with the intention. Globally, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused severe and multi-dimensional resource losses among individuals. The Conservation of Resource (COR) theory postulates that resource loss generates related stress responses. It can suitably be applied to understand the pandemic's encompassing adverse consequences. Yet, no assessment tool exists. This study hence developed and validated the COR Scale for COVID-19 (CORS-COVID-19) to facilitate relevant research. The five hypothesized domains included losses in financial resource, family resource, future control, fun, and social resource. A population-based random telephone survey interviewed 300 Chinese adults in the general population in Hong Kong, China during April 3-10, 2020. The levels of different types of resource losses were high (especially for loss in fun). The 5-factor structure identified by factor analysis matches with the five hypothesized dimensions. Its psychometric properties are acceptable, including good internal consistency, content validity (the correlations between the items and their respective subscales were stronger than that between the items and the other four subscales), concurrent validity (significant correlations between the scale/subscale scores and both emotional distress due to COVID-19 and satisfaction with living in Hong Kong), and convergent validity (significant correlations between specific subscales and corresponding external variables). Relatively high floor effects were detected in some subscales. The scale, which is the first of the types to assess resource losses during a pandemic, can provide theory-based understandings/assessment about the negative impacts of COVID-19. Rationale: Mass testing is considered as an important policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and high population coverage is pivotal to its effectiveness. A range of factors derived from health behaviour theories were hypothesized to be associated with public uptake of mass testing, including illness representations of COVID-19, perceived susceptibility to COVID-19, perceived efficacy of the testing program, and general trust toward governmental measures for controlling COVID-19., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the multi-dimensional factors associated with participation in a free and voluntary population-wide mass COVID-19 testing program., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Hong Kong within two weeks after the Universal Community Testing Program for COVID-19 concluded on September 14, 2020. A random population-based telephone survey interviewed 443 Hong Kong general adults who were aged ≥18 and had not joined other COVID-19 testing programs. The dependent variable was participation in the Universal Community Testing Program. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to test the associations of participation in the program with the proposed factors., Results: The standardized participation rate of the testing program was estimated to be about 37.2% among the general adults (33.0% among males; 40.8% among females) in Hong Kong. The participation rates were significantly lower among males and younger adults. Adjusted for socio-demographics, significant factors included four dimensions of illness representations of COVID-19 (treatment control: adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.41; illness identity: AOR = 1.10; concern: AOR = 1.14; emotions: AOR = 1.10), perceived susceptibility to COVID-19 (AOR = 1.40), perceived efficacy of the testing program (AOR = 2.73), and trust toward governmental control measures (AOR = 4.30)., Conclusions: The participation rate of the population-wide mass testing program was not high among general adults in Hong Kong, evidence-based health promotion is necessary. Objectives: COVID-19 vaccination needs a high population coverage to achieve herd immunity. We investigated prevalence of three scenarios of intention of free COVID-19 vaccination involving: 1) 80% effectiveness and rare and mild side effects (Scenario 1), 2) 50% effectiveness and rare and mild side effect RMSE (Scenario 2), and 3) immediate vaccination (Scenario 3), and their associated factors derived from the pre-intentional motivational phase of the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA)., Methods: A random population-based telephone survey interviewed 450 Chinese adults in the general population (September 16-30, 2020). The four HAPA constructs included a) risk perception scale, b) overall scale/four subscales of positive outcome expectancy of COVID-19 vaccination, c) overall scale/three subscales of negative outcome expectancy of COVID-19 vaccination, and d) the overall scale/two subscales of self-efficacy of COVID-19 vaccination., Results: The prevalence of intention of COVID-19 vaccination under Scenarios 1 to 3 was 38.0%, 11.1%, and 13.1%, respectively. Logistic regression analyses adjusted for background factors showed that 1) the associations between risk perception and the three scenarios of intention were non-significant; 2) the overall scale/four subscales of positive outcome expectancy were in general positively associated with two scenarios of intention (80% effectiveness and immediate vaccination); 3) the overall scale/three subscales of negative outcome expectancy were in general negatively associated with all three scenarios of intention; 4) the overall scale/two subscales of self-efficacy were only positively associated with the intention that involved 80% effectiveness. When all the four overall scales were entered into an adjusted model, positive and negative outcome expectancy, but not risk perception and self-efficacy, were independently associated with the three scenarios., Conclusions: In this study population, the prevalence of intention of COVID-19 vaccination was very low and might not result in population protection. The World Health Organization recommends young children receive influenza vaccination (IV) annually. Stratified by children's previous IV status, this study investigated the associated factors of parental intention to let their children aged 24 to 59 months receive IV in the next 12 months in Hong Kong, China. We conducted a cross-sectional population-based telephone survey among 540 Chinese parents of children aged 24 to 59 months. The prevalence of parental intention regarding their child's IV was 68.9% and 19.8%, respectively, in the ever-vaccinated and never-vaccinated groups. Adjusted for background factors, perceived susceptibility (adjusted odds ratio [ORa] = 3.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.07-9.54), perceived benefit (ORa = 4.77, 95% CI = 2.52-9.05), perceived barrier (ORa = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.17-0.84), cue to action (ORa = 3.57, 95% CI = 1.88-6.78), subjective norm (ORa = 11.23, 95% CI = 6.17-20.46), and having family members vaccinated (ORa = 1.79, 95% CI = 1.09-2.96) were associated with parental intention for ever-vaccinated children's IV, while only perceived benefit (ORa = 8.85, 95% CI = 3.36-23.34) and subjective norm (ORa = 21.66, 95% CI = 9.25-50.71) were significant for never-vaccinated children. Our findings showed that the identified factors and applicability of the health belief model varied according to child's vaccination status. Health promotion should consider segmentation principles. Besides modifying related cognitions like perceived benefit and barrier (only for the ever-vaccinated group), such programs should improve cue to action involving health professionals and family members and create supportive subjective norms.

Background: The World Health Organization recommends young children aged 6-59 months receive influenza vaccination (IV) annually. This study investigated the IV incidence in a 12-month follow-up period among 24-59 month-old children and identified its predictors based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB)., Methods: A population-based random telephone survey was conducted at baseline (March-June 2011) among Chinese parents of 24-59 month-old children in Hong Kong, China, and a follow-up survey was conducted 12 months afterwards (N=440)., Results: The IV prevalence was 63.2% at follow-up (3% increased from baseline). The IV incidence during the follow-up period for all sampled, ever-vaccinated, and never-vaccinated children was 35.6, 58.5, and 7.7 per 100 person-years, respectively. Stratified analyses of logistic regression were performed for the ever-vaccinated and never-vaccinated children. After adjusting for significant socio-demographic variable(s), parental positive attitude, norm, and behavioral intention were significant predictors of IV at follow-up among ever-vaccinated children, while intention was the only significant predictor among never-vaccinated children., Conclusions: Most of the IVs received during the follow-up period were re-vaccinations rather than first-time vaccinations. Efforts should target never-vaccinated children's parents, who reported low incidence and intention. TPB also worked less well among never-vaccinated children, and thus research for other predictors of never-vaccinated children's first-time vaccination are warranted. Background: Internet addiction (IA) is prevalent among adolescents but it is potentially revertible. Only three Taiwan adolescent studies reported IA remission and a few related factors. We investigated incidence and predictors of remission among Hong Kong Chinese secondary school students with a 12-month longitudinal study., Methods: IA was defined as Chen Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS) score>63. Validated measures were used to assess students' psychosocial wellbeing at baseline and follow-up., Results: Of 1545 students with IA at baseline, 1296 (83.9%) provided matched baseline/12-month follow-up data; their data were analyzed. Incidence of remission (CIAS≤63 at follow-up) was 59.29/100 person-years. Significant predictors included: 1) baseline CIAS score (ORa=.95), 2) baseline health belief model (HBM) constructs [perception of having severe IA (ORa=.34), perceived susceptibility to IA (ORa=0.82), perceived barrier (ORa=0.95), cue to action from parents (ORa=0.82), and self-efficacy for reducing Internet use (ORa=1.13)], and 3) baseline psychosocial health measures [self-esteem (ORa=1.03), severe depression (ORa=0.72) and social anxiety (ORa=0.96)] and their changes over time [depression (ORa=.95), anxiety (ORa=.94), loneliness (ORa=.93), self-esteem (ORa=1.07), positive affect (ORa=1.10) and family support (ORa=1.03)]. Two-thirds (64.3%) of the remission group presented reduced CIAS score>1.5 SD, and recorded larger improvements in psychosocial status over time than the non-remission group., Conclusion: Without noticeable interventions, incidence of remission was high and related to improvements in psychosocial health. Background: Internet addiction (IA) is a risk factor while some psychosocial factors can be protective against depression among adolescents. Mechanisms of IA onto depression in terms of mediations and moderations involving protective factors are unknown and were investigated in this study., Methods: A representative cross-sectional study was conducted among Hong Kong Chinese secondary school students (n=9518)., Results: Among males and females, prevalence of depression at moderate or severe level (CES-D≥21) was 38.36% and 46.13%, and that of IA (CIAS>63) was 17.64% and 14.01%, respectively. Adjusted for socio-demographics, depression was positively associated with IA [males: adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=4.22, 95% CI=3.61-4.94; females: AOR=4.79, 95% CI=3.91-5.87] and negatively associated with psychosocial factors including self-esteem, positive affect, family support, and self-efficacy (males: AOR=0.76-0.94; females: AOR=0.72-0.92, p<.05). The positive association between IA and depression was partially mediated by the protective psychosocial factors (mainly self-esteem) across sexes. Through significant moderations, IA also reduced magnitude of protective effects of self-efficacy and family support among males and that of positive affect among both sexes against depression., Conclusions: The high IA prevalence contributes to increased risk of prevalent depression through its direct effect, mediation (reduced level of protective factors) and moderation (reduced magnitude of protective effects) effects. Understanding to mechanisms between IA and depression through protective factors is enhanced. Background: Influenza results in severe complications among 24- to 59-month-old children, who are recommended by the WHO to take up influenza vaccination (IV) annually. Health promotion is warranted. Yet, there is a dearth of studies on IV prevalence and associated factors in this age group., Methods: A random population-based telephone survey interviewed 540 parents of Chinese children aged 24-59 months in Hong Kong during March through June, 2011. Constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM) and subjective norm formed basis for assessing parental perceptions on influenza and IV. For data analysis, adjusted, and stepwise multiple logistic regression models were fit., Results: The prevalence of having taken up at least one dose and two doses of IV among children aged 24-59 months was 58.9 and 42.4%, respectively. Significant associated factors included family members' IV experience (ORu=5.37, 95% CI: 3.48, 8.29), variables related to the HBM constructs (except perceived severity) [perceived susceptibility of seasonal influenza (ORu=2.03, 95% CI: 1.39, 2.95), perceived benefits of IV (ORu=3.11, 95% CI: 2.05, 4.71), perceived barriers (ORu=0.49, 95% CI: 0.25, 0.96) of IV, and cue to action (ORu=4.79, 95% CI: 2.87, 7.99)], supportive subjective norm (ORu=4.26, 95% CI: 2.91, 6.25), and level of fear felt during the H1N1 pandemic (ORu=1.97, 95% CI: 1.01, 3.87). Adjusted for the child's age, the same significant factors were found. Exposure to related media messages was statistically non-significant., Conclusion: The reported IV prevalence was higher than that of 24- to 59-month-old children reported in other studies. There is room for improvement through health promotion, which should modify parental cognitions related to HBM (except perceived severity and self-efficacy) and involve family members to create subjective norm. HIV is a serious health threat among men who have sex with men (MSM). A 2-month pilot network-based peer intervention was conducted among Chinese MSM in Hong Kong. Eight MSM peer educators were randomized into the Intervention or the Control Groups and recruited 36 and 33 peers to join the program, respectively. The educators of the Intervention Group delivered standardized and theory-based preventive messages to their peers via daily social interactions. The Control Group received education materials. Baseline between-group differences were non-significant. At post-intervention, intervened participants were more likely than controlled participants to intend to use condoms consistently during anal sex with men in the next 6 months [94.4% versus 60.6%; Relative Risk (RR): 1.56 (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.17, 2.08)] and to perceive behavioral control over taking up voluntary HIV testing and counseling [97.2% versus 72.7%; RR: 1.34 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.66)]. Large scale randomized trials are warranted.
