Abstract

Harvesting all sources of available clean energy is an essential strategy to contribute to healing current dependence on non-sustainable energy sources. Recently, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have gained visibility as new mechanical energy harvester offering a valid alternative to batteries, being particularly suitable for portable devices. Here, the increased capacitance of a few-layer graphene-based electrode is obtained by incorporating nitrogen-doped graphene (N_graphene), enabling a 3_fold enhancement in TENGs power output. The dependence of TENGs performance on the electronic properties of different N_graphene types, varying in the doping concentration and in the relative content of N-pyridinic and N-graphitic sites is investigated. These sites have different electron affinities, and synergistically contribute to the variation of the capacitive and resistive properties of N-graphene and consequently, TENG performance. It is demonstrated that the power enhancement of the TENG occurs when the N_graphene, an n-semiconductor, is interfaced between the positive triboelectric material and the electrode, while a deterioration of the electrical performance is observed when it is placed at the interface with the negative triboelectric material. This behavior is explained in terms of the dependence of N_graphene quantum capacitance on the electrode chemical potential which shifts according to the opposite polarization induced at the two electrodes upon triboelectrification.

Abstract

The design of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the key for molecular hydrogen (H2) production from electrochemical water splitting. Transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2), most notably group-6 MX2 (e.g., MoS2 and WS2), are appealing catalysts for the HER alternative to the best, but highly expensive, Pt-group elements. However, their HER activity is typically restricted to their edge sites rather than their basal plane. Furthermore, their semiconducting properties hinder an efficient electron transfer to the catalytic sites, which impedes a high rate of H2 production. Herein, we exploit liquid-phase exfoliation-produced metallic (1H, 2H and 3R) NbS2 nanoflakes, belonging to the class of metallic layered group-5 MX2, to overcome the abovementioned limitations. Both chemical treatment with hygroscopic Li salt and electrochemical in operando self-nanostructuring are exploited to improve the NbS2 nanoflake HER activity. The combination of NbS2 with other MX2, in our case MoSe2, also provides heterogeneous catalysts accelerating the HER kinetics of the individual counterparts. The designed NbS2-based catalysts exhibit an overpotential at a cathodic current of 10 mA cm-2 (n10) as low as 0.10 and 0.22 V vs. RHE in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH, respectively. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the HER activity of the NbS2-based catalysts is also superior to those of the Pt/C benchmark at current densities higher than 80 mA cm-2. Our work provides general guidelines for a scalable and cost-effective exploitation of NbS2, as well as the entire MX2 portfolio, for attaining a viable H2 production through electrochemical routes.

Abstract

Prostate malignancy represents the second leading causeof cancer-specificdeath among the male population worldwide. Herein, enhanced intracellularmagnetic fluid hyperthermia is applied in vitro totreat prostate cancer (PCa) cells with minimum invasiveness and toxicityand highly specific targeting. We designed and optimized novel shape-anisotropicmagnetic core-shell-shell nanoparticles (i.e., trimagneticnanoparticles - TMNPs) with significant magnetothermal conversionfollowing an exchange coupling effect to an external alternating magneticfield (AMF). The functional properties of the best candidate in termsof heating efficiency (i.e., Fe3O4@Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4@CoFe2O4) were exploited following surface decoration with PCa cellmembranes (CM) and/or LN1 cell-penetrating peptide (CPP). We demonstratedthat the combination of biomimetic dual CM-CPP targeting and AMF responsivenesssignificantly induces caspase 9-mediated apoptosis of PCa cells. Furthermore,a downregulation of the cell cycle progression markers and a decreaseof the migration rate in surviving cells were observed in responseto the TMNP-assisted magnetic hyperthermia, suggesting a reductionin cancer cell aggressiveness.

Abstract

In this work, we report the synthesis of an active material for supercapacitors (SCs), namely α-Fe2O3/carbon composite (C-Fe2O3) made of elongated nanoparticles linearly connected into a worm-like morphology, by means of electrospinning followed by a calcination/carbonization process. The resulting active material powder can be directly processed in the form of slurry to produce SC electrodes with mass loadings higher than 1 mg cm−2 on practical flat current collectors, avoiding the need for bulky porous substrate, as often reported in the literature. In aqueous electrolyte (6 M KOH), the so-produced C-Fe2O3 electrodes display capacity as high as ~140 mAh g−1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s−1, while showing an optimal rate capability (capacity of 32.4 mAh g−1 at a scan rate of 400 mV s−1). Thanks to their poor catalytic activity towards water splitting reactions, the electrode can operate in a wide potential range (−1.6 V–0.3 V vs. Hg/HgO), enabling the realization of performant quasi-symmetric SCs based on electrodes with the same chemical composition (but different active material mass loadings), achieving energy density approaching 10 Wh kg−1 in aqueous electrolytes. Abstract

Various strategies have been proposed to engineer the band gap of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) while preserving their structure and composition and thus ensuring spectral stability of the emission color. An aspect that has only been marginally investigated is how the type of surface passivation influences the structural/color stability of AMX3 perovskite NCs composed of two different M2+ cations. Here, we report the synthesis of blue-emitting Cs-oleate capped CsCdxPb1–xBr3 NCs, which exhibit a cubic perovskite phase containing Cd-rich domains of Ruddlesden–Popper phases (RP phases). The RP domains spontaneously transform into pure orthorhombic perovskite ones upon NC aging, and the emission color of the NCs shifts from blue to green over days. On the other hand, postsynthesis ligand exchange with various Cs-carboxylate or ammonium bromide salts, right after NC synthesis, provides monocrystalline NCs with cubic phase, highlighting the metastability of RP domains. When NCs are treated with Cs-carboxylates (including Cs-oleate), most of the Cd2+ ions are expelled from NCs upon aging, and the NCs phase evolves from cubic to orthorhombic and their emission color changes from blue to green. Instead, when NCs are coated with ammonium bromides, the loss of Cd2+ ions is suppressed and the NCs tend to retain their blue emission (both in colloidal dispersions and in electroluminescent devices), as well as their cubic phase, over time. The improved compositional and structural stability in the latter cases is ascribed to the saturation of surface vacancies, which may act as channels for the expulsion of Cd2+ ions from NCs.

Abstract

All‐inorganic metal halide perovskites are highly attractive materials for optoelectronics and are typically implemented as thin films, nanocrystals, and single crystals with macroscopic and millimeter‐size dimensions. Single crystals with regular shapes in the micrometer range are less explored and present an interesting alternative when a well‐defined and spatially localized response is desired. Here, CsPbBr3 microcrystals are fabricated by simple and fast drop‐casting of a precursor solution on several substrates that for the growth process are heated to temperatures in the range from 80 to 150 °C. The microcrystals have a cubic shape and feature a pyramidal cavity on their top surface that forms due to faster growth at the edges once the growing crystal is attached to the substrate. Distinct heterogeneity in the photoluminescence (PL) and conductivity of the different facets are measured by µ‐PL and conductive atomic force microscopy experiments. Toward device applications, the authors contact single microcrystals on conductive substrates mechanically with a micromanipulator tip. They observe diode‐like current–voltage curves and good photodetector functionality, obtaining a high responsivity of 150–300 A W−1 in the blue–green spectral region under forward bias, and a sharp detection band centered around 540 nm with peak responsivity close to 0.7 A W−1 under reverse bias. Abstract

The engineering of the structural and morphological properties of nanomaterials is a fundamental aspect to attain desired performance in energy storage/conversion systems and multifunctional composites. We report the synthesis of room temperature-stable metallic rutile VO2(VO2(R)) nanosheets by topochemically transforming liquid-phase exfoliated VSe2in a reductive Ar–H2atmosphere. The as-produced VO2(R) represents an example of two-dimensional (2D) nonlayered materials, whose bulk counterparts do not have a layered structure composed by layers held together by van der Waals force or electrostatic forces between charged layers and counterbalancing ions amid them. By pretreating the VSe2nanosheets by O2plasma, the resulting 2D VO2(R) nanosheets exhibit a porous morphology that increases the material specific surface area while introducing defective sites. The as-synthesized porous (holey)-VO2(R) nanosheets are investigated as metallic catalysts for the water splitting reactions in both acidic and alkaline media, reaching a maximum mass activity of 972.3 A g–1at −0.300 V vs RHE for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H2SO4(faradaic efficiency = 100%, overpotential for the HER at 10 mA cm–2= 0.184 V) and a mass activity (calculated for a non 100% faradaic efficiency) of 745.9 A g–1at +1.580 V vs RHE for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH (overpotential for the OER at 10 mA cm–2= 0.209 V). By demonstrating proof-of-concept electrolyzers, our results show the possibility to synthesize special material phases through topochemical conversion of 2D materials for advanced energy-related applications.

44. The Reactivity of CsPbBr3Nanocrystals toward Acid/Base Ligands

Abstract

The interaction of lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals with charged ligands, such as salts, zwitterions, or acid–base pairs, has been extensively documented over the past few years. On the other hand, little is known about the reactivity of perovskite nanocrystals toward neutral ligands. To fill this gap, in this work we study the interaction of CsPbBr3nanocrystals passivated with didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDABr) toward a series of exogenous acid/base ligands using a combined computational and experimental approach. Our analysis indicates that DDABr-capped nanocrystals are inert toward most ligands, except for carboxylic, phosphonic, and sulfonic acids. In agreement with the calculations, our experimental results indicate that the higher the acidity of the ligands employed in the treatment, the more etching is observed. In detail, dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (pKa= −1.8) is found to etch the nanocrystals, causing their complete degradation. On the other hand, oleic and oleylphosphonic acids (pKa9.9 and 2, respectively) interact with surface-bound DDA molecules, causing their displacement as DDABr in various amounts, which can be as high as 40% (achieved with oleylphosphonic acid). Despite the stripping of DDA ligands, the optical properties of the nanocrystals, as well as structure and morphology, remain substantially unaffected, empirically demonstrating the defect tolerance characterizing such materials. Our study provides not only a clear overview on the interaction between perovskite nanocrystals and neutral ligands but also presents an effective ligand stripping strategy.

Abstract

Hollow structures made of nanoscale building blocks are of great interest as catalysts for electrochemical water splitting. Here we report a solution-phase synthesis of yolk–shell Co3O4/Co1−xRuxO2 microspheres (MSs) having a shell made of Co1−xRuxO2 nanorods and the core of Co3O4. Benefiting from the peculiar morphology and the synergy between the different materials present in the MSs, the latter exhibit enhanced electrochemical oxygen evolution activity and long-term stability in acidic media. The catalyst achieves a catalytic current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of only 240 mV, a small Tafel slope of 70 mV dec−1, and a high mass activity of 600 A g−1 and maintains its activity throughout a 24 h chronopotentiometry tests at constant current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm−2.
