This presentation communicates an overview of a methodology developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Thrust Vector Control (TVC) Systems Integration & Components Branch (MSFC-ER63). The methodology is based on NASA heritage TVC design practices and is designed to analyze the summation of static and quasi-static environments acting on a gimbaled rocket engine/motor system. The analysis determines the maximum overall expected induced torque acting on the rocket engine/motor system about the gimbal center of rotation and assumes a mathematical 3-Dimensional (3D) 2-Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) rigid-body pendulum model over a predefined range of angular motion. Additionally, it calculates the associated reaction force acting along a TVC actuator line-of-action (LOA) to maintain thrust vector holding operations. This methodology is particularly useful for determining maximum overall design loads for TVC actuator design-space shaping and requirements determination.

This study presents experimental results of compression after impact (CAI) strength testing of aluminum core sandwich structure with carbon/epoxy face sheets impacted at three different energies with either a 12.7 mm hemispherical, 24.5 mm hemispherical or sharp tip impactor. This study was undertaken to verify whether design allowables typically generated by blunt (hemispherical) impactors may be valid in ‘real world” applications where an impact may not be by a blunt object of a specific size. Results of practical interest in this study were that the visual damage was much easier to see for the sharp impactor, the damage size as detected by thermography was smaller for the sharp impactor for a given impact energy and dent depth was greater for the sharp impactor. The CAI strength results showed that the sharp impactor gave about the same CAI strength values at all three impact energy levels used. The larger hemispherical impactor gave slightly higher CAI results than the smaller blunt impactor. Overall it was deemed difficult to develop a CAI allowable that would cover all impactor shapes with any fidelity and thus using a lower bound strain allowable is suggested.

In recent years, the United States (U.S.) Government has issued several new National policies that fundamentally change the approach to nuclear flight safety for aerospace applications, including the complete revision of the Federal policy for handling launch of spacecraft containing space nuclear systems. In response, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is updating its nuclear flight safety program while still maintaining consistency with other Federal policies, international conventions, and NASA’s own policies. To achieve this evolution, NASA is factoring in an objectives-driven and assurance case mindset to develop a risk-informed and performance-based program. NASA and others have successfully applied this mindset in other disciplines and contexts and it is being pursued here via broad cooperation within NASA and with external stakeholders. This paper will briefly describe how the NASA nuclear flight safety program is evolving to meet these changing needs.

NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) is powered by four Aerojet-Rocketdyne RS-25 engines, previously referred to as Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs), with two RSRMV solid rocket boosters (SRBs) derived from the Shuttle booster as seen in Fig. 1. Ignition and the start transient of the SRBs, each of which generate 3.6 million pounds of thrust, create a series of large magnitude pressure waves separate from launch acoustics that have the potential to damage the vehicle if unmitigated. This portion of the SLS launch environment consists of igniter shock (IS), ignition overpressure (IOP), and duct overpressure (DOP).

The SLS Artemis I launch vehicle is the first of several planned Artemis launch vehicles, with a number of design differences from earlier NASA missions that incur liftoff debris risk to the mission. As a test vehicle, the Artemis I hardware also endured environments and tests not planned for future missions, which led to several additional factors contributing to an evolving liftoff debris risk to the SLS vehicle. This paper will summarize these risk factors and address the processes used to evaluate and communicate the risks to support a successful Artemis I launch. It will discuss how the evolving risks that were quantified and evaluated by a Cross-Program team of debris Subject Matter Experts to mitigate liftoff debris hazards and communicate updated risk to the SLS vehicle. This process was performed through the inaugural use of an SLS debris day-of-launch (DOL) standard operating procedure that will be used for subsequent Artemis missions. This paper addresses the risk of liftoff debris, debris released by the vehicle or from the launch pad during liftoff through vehicle tower clear. Expected liftoff debris is well understood from previous NASA programs’ experience and from tests of materials, processes and functions that are known to release liftoff debris. These expected sources were assessed and cleared well ahead of launch day. However, given the ever-changing schedules and environments, processes were in place to evaluate any additional potential liftoff debris risks identified during launch countdown. Although many of the Artemis vehicle hardware components are similar to those on the NASA Shuttle Program, there are important differences in the architecture of the Artemis I vehicle which require new assessments of liftoff debris risk for the Artemis missions. The more favorable Artemis crew module location and surfaces are far less vulnerable to debris impacts; however, the longer vehicle can result in higher liftoff debris impact energies to those components on the aft end of the vehicle. Additionally, the positional change of the RS-25 liquid engines to nearer the Booster nozzle exit plane along with the change in Booster throat plug design is a disadvantage to the overall liftoff debris risk which resulted in additional test and analysis efforts for evaluating the integrated vehicle debris risk. In spite of the comprehensive tests and analyses of Artemis I expected liftoff debris, a number of additional tests/processes were completed prior to the Artemis I mission that were required to support a complete understanding of a new launch vehicle, but increased the risk of releasing liftoff debris. The hardware endured several additional cryogenic loading cycles, including the Green Run tests at Stennis Space Center, Wet Dress Rehearsals at Kennedy Space Center, and multiple launch attempts. Each of these cycles induced stresses in the thermal protection system (TPS) materials, increasing the risk of damage to and release of the TPS. Additionally, induced and weather environmental factors that could increase the likelihood of debris release were significant. Vibrations and stresses in the TPS were induced by a required roll-back to the Vehicle Assembly Building before Hurricane Ian to protect the vehicle from damage by high winds. Wind damage and potential internal stresses to several outer mold line materials on the integrated SLS vehicle and mobile launcher were caused by weathering Hurricane Nicole at Pad 39B the week before launch. A thorough imagery scan of the vehicle was performed after each event and the damage observed was repaired, removed, or assessed and the risk to the mission evaluated. Mitigation of debris risk can occur by tests and analyses to show debris impacted components as damage tolerant, by new/improved processes for prevention of debris availability, or redesign. Risk mitigation processes for Artemis I-specific liftoff debris events and the development and use of the SLS debris day of launch (DOL) procedures that will be used for subsequent Artemis missions will be described.

This study presents experimental results of impact and subsequent compression after impact (CAI) strength testing of sandwich structure representative of most of the acreage of a Payload Adaptor Fitting (PAF) that has been built at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). An instrumented drop weight tower was used to inflict different levels of impact damage to specimens. Load versus deflection of impact curves, visual damage, dent depth, damage as ascertained by thermography and cross-sectional microscopy were evaluated as part of the damage resistance of the structure. Compression After Impact (CAI) was performed to assess damage tolerance. The results show that at the amount of visual damage was highly dependent on whether the peel ply was present on the surface of the structure. The peel ply had some effect on the CAI strength values since the specimens with peel ply showed a 14% higher average CAI strength value. For all specimens tested in this study, CAI versus damage and CAI versus impact energy curves were plotted and it was found that damage size was a good indicator of CAI strength. It is suggested to use a b-basis damage tolerance curve based on damage size as a conservative measure of the load carrying capability of the sandwich structure with impact damage.

A Solid-State Thermodynamic Vent System (STVS) is a novel Cryogenic Fluid Management (CFM) technology for spacecraft cryogenic propellant tanks that may reduce boiloff while providing greater control over the propellent condition. By exploiting the vacuum-induced cryocooling potential of cryogen-saturated silica aerogel material, an internal STVS heat exchanger expels some sacrificial cryogenic propellant to the vacuum of space to produce cooling within the storage tank. This cooling is transferred directly to the stored fluid, thereby reducing boiloff and increasing hold times. The primary STVS project objective was to design and build a bespoke STVS heat exchanger that employed aerogel blanket material and perform a ground demonstration of the technology using liquid nitrogen (LN2) as the cryogenic propellant. This demonstration aimed to prove that an STVS can have a positive influence on the tank boiloff, shown through a reduction in mass flow rate out of the system during operation, and exercise control over the tank pressure. Testing proved the effectiveness of the concept by reducing the LN2 boiloff rate and tank pressure by roughly 70% and 77% respectively during a single pump-down cycle, which sacrificed around 1.8 kg of propellant.

This Handbook describes the capabilities of the Sounding Rocket program, the design and technology applications used by that program, and the processes established to integrate the customer (principal investigator/program user/scientist/experimenter) into the mission team to ensure the highest probability of a successful project.

As technology evolves and improves within the science of composite materials, new fiber/ resin systems are being developed for improved properties given certain loading and environmental scenarios. Improving the room temperature damage tolerance capabilities has long been one of the goals in the carbon fiber/polymer composite industry. Recently a new fiber/epoxy system has been introduced that is claimed to have superior damage tolerance capabilities. To examine if this new carbon fiber/epoxy composite material would be of benefit to a program to manufacture a Payload Adapter Fitting (PAF) for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the question was asked as to just how much damage tolerance could be realized if this new system were used. Compression after impact (CAI) strength of sandwich structure is one of the leading metrics being used to evaluate materials for the PAF program. As a result, a comparison of this new fiber/resin system with a very common (and planned baseline) fiber/resin system with respect to CAI was considered in this study. While it was already known that the older, baseline carbon fiber structure would not have as good damage tolerance characteristics as the newer carbon fiber system, the quantitative difference in damage tolerance was sought in this study since no other CAI data could be found in open literature on sandwich structures made with this new fiber/resin system.

Titan is unique in the outer solar system in that it is the only moon with a thick atmosphere, and the only body in the solar system outside the Earth with liquid seas on its surface. The Titanian oceans, however, are seas of liquid hydrocarbons, and the rocks on the surface are solid water ice. Like other icy Moons of the outer solar system, beneath the ice crust, Titan also has a subsurface ocean. Rodriguez et al. refer to it as the “world with two oceans”, an organic-rich body with interior-surface-atmosphere interactions that are comparable in complexity to the Earth. [1] Titan is scientifically fascinating in many ways [2], [3], [4]. The Compass Team will emphasize just one here: Titan is a high priority target for astrobiology [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]. It is a world with a surface and atmosphere rich in the complex organic compounds known as tholins. A detailed understanding of the nature of these complex compounds will require an analysis using a full laboratory on Earth. Because of its value to understanding the organic compounds of the outer solar system which may be the primordial building-blocks of life, return of samples from Titan to laboratories on Earth will be the primary goal of this mission. While this would give unprecedented science return, returning even a small sample from Titan using conventional technology would be tremendously difficult. Saturn is almost a billion miles from the Earth, about thirteen times farther than Mars. A return mission to Saturn requires such a large total-mission ∆V that, with conventional technology, the mass ratios required are prohibitive. Such a sample return would truly be “mission incredible.” But to date, a sample return mission from so distant a target has been assumed to be, not merely incredible, but mission impossible. The Compass Team has proposed [2] [12] that by manufacturing the propellant for the return to Earth using the resources available on Titan, such a mission becomes possible. The task of this report is to show that it is reasonable with credible space technology.

Spray-On Foam Insulation (SOFI) is typically used to protect the windward-facing side of flight tanks for space launch vehicle liquid hydrogen (LH2) stages. SOFI is an excellent insulator in ambient pressure environments, however, its performance pales in comparison to reflective-type systems such as Multi-Layer Insulation in the thermal radiation dominated vacuum environment of space. If a windward insulation system employing radiation shields could be devised to replace or supplement SOFI, the on-orbit heat load could be drastically reduced, and the residual propellants could then be used to facilitate secondary missions. Such insulation systems, utilizing aerogel blanket insulation, have been explored by the Cryogenics Test Laboratory at NASA Kennedy Space Center. Owing to its nano-porous structure, aerogel is an excellent adsorbent as well as an insulator at cryogenic temperatures and will readily uptake condensable background gasses such as air when protecting a surface near LH2 temperatures. When an adsorbed blanket is rapidly exposed to a vacuum, such as during the ascent of a rocket, it will release the background gas, producing a passive cooling effect that could potentially reduce or eliminate the heat load on the propellant tank for a time. This work discusses the setup and results of a test program carried out to determine the effectiveness and impact of this cooling effect as it pertains to LH2 upper stage tanks. A vertical-cylindrical liquid nitrogen (LN2) calorimeter test instrument acted as the upper stage analog. The cold-mass was wrapped with two layers of 10 mm thick aerogel blanket material, with and without aluminum heat shields depending on the test, and interspersed with numerous thermocouple temperature sensors. Gaseous argon was used as a stand-in for air as the condensable background gas. The test procedure mimicked vehicle cryo-loading/stabilization, and ascent phases, with the ascent phase accomplished using parallel vacuum pumps. Results show that the desorption cooling effect was enough to not only eliminate the heat load on the LN2 cold-mass entirely, but further refrigerated the liquid below its boiling point.

This study presents experimental results of compression after impact (CAI) and stiffness testing of aluminum honeycomb core sandwich structure with quasi-isotropic face sheets that have either been co-cured or precured (and then bonded to the core in a secondary operation). The co-cured face sheets contain some ply waviness whereas the precured face sheets did not. The effect of this waviness was ascertained for two important design parameters for the Space Launch System (SLS) Payload Adapter Fitting (PAF); compressive modulus and CAI strength. It was found that there was no effect on the modulus between co-cured and precured face sheets using the material and processes in this study. In addition, there was no difference in CAI strength behavior between the co-cured and precured face sheet.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Optical Telescope Element + Integrated Science Instrument Module (OTIS) went through environmental testing at the Goddard Space Flight Center. The vibration and acoustic tests occurred outside of cleanrooms. These areas are typically around ISO Class 8, far out of specifications for JWST. Through collaboration between the OTIS Mechanical and Contamination Engineering teams, a portable clean enclosure was designed, built, and verified to prevent contamination of the sensitive OTIS assembly. This manuscript describes the process of designing and building this enclosure, including materials selection and High Efficiency Particle Air (HEPA) filtration. This enclosure also provided environmental control with a portable air conditioning unit to control the relative humidity level enabling personnel to work within it. The manuscript emphasizes working in a systematic order to maintain cleanliness and integrity. “Clean as you go” during construction was a top priority to ensure that this critical Ground Support Equipment (GSE) was acceptable. The process of installing the walls and then sealing their internal and external surfaces with approved films was critical to maintaining OTIS integrity. This proved important because OTIS was in the enclosure for months longer than originally planned. This manuscript concludes by reviewing the process used to verify that the OTIS clean enclosure could achieve acceptable contamination level fallout accumulation for use during the vibration and acoustic testing and then verifying that the predicted performance was achieved after testing was complete.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared space telescope operating at Lagrange point 2. JWST is a joint effort between NASA, ESA, and CSA and was launched from the Centre Spatial Guyanais (CSG) on an Ariane 5 rocket in December 2021. The three-month launch campaign utilized enhanced contamination controls to meet JWST’s strict cleanliness requirements. Prior to launch, JWST was permitted to only be exposed to ISO Class 7 cleanrooms, whereas the processing facilities at CSG are ISO Class 8. NASA, ESA, Arianespace, and CNES implemented temporary upgrades to the nominal contamination control operations for the launch campaign unique to JWST, including the use of vetted, portable High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter walls, pre-entrance cleanliness acceptance surveys of each facility and the intra-plant transporter, tightened cleanroom protocols, upgraded garmenting and laundering techniques, cleaning of Self-Contained Atmospheric Protection Ensemble (SCAPE) suits, increased maintenance, staffed pre-cleaning stations, adaptation of the house purge network, and a contamination control enclosure atop the Ariane 5 launcher prior to fairing encapsulation. The Ariane 5 fairing interior and Vehicle Equipment Bay membrane also received multiple cleanings, detailed inspections, and verification sampling to achieve necessary cleanliness levels. The fairing itself was specially sealed to protect the inner environment with just a small, doored porthole accessible via diving board for final closeout of the purge interface. All these enhancements together allowed JWST to meet its contamination requirements for launch, ensuring successful post-separation deployments and mission science.

The launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was successfully performed by Ariane 5 from French Guiana on December 25th 2021. The unique nature of the JWST mission led to various adaptations of the Ariane 5 launch system to fulfill stringent cleanliness and hygrometry requirements all along the launch preparation. JWST integration and test activities in the Final Assembly Building (BAF) had to be performed in ISO Class 7 equivalent conditions under Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) protection and monitoring. For this purpose, a dedicated air supply system equipped with Airborne Molecular Contamination (AMC) filters was installed in the umbilical mast. The fairing itself was specially sealed to protect the inner environment, and to, guarantee ISO Class 7, the BAF Composite Hall (BAF-HC) facilities were upgraded with a removable “Air Shower Curtain” (AShC) containment enclosure between the mobile platforms around JWST. The preparation of these Ariane 5 launch system adaptations started several years before the launch campaign with close cooperation and coordination between Arianespace, ArianeGroup, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This paper describes their specificities and addresses the challenges experienced to achieve the successful mission preparation.

Slosh dynamics pose a stability concern for human-rated launch vehicles during ascent. Historical perspectives on the treatment of slosh dynamics, newly developed rules of thumb, the utility of flight data, and methods for analyzing and dispositioning slosh instability risks should be considered when linear stability margins are lower than typically accepted for human-rated systems.

The main objective for launch vehicle (LV) modal testing is to quantify the LV’s modal properties in the free-free state (post pad separation). However, given the size of most LV systems, free-free testing is a challenge and often not feasible. With this, a test stand, typically the launch pad itself, is introduced as the means of support. This shifts the challenge to developing robust numerical methods for removing the influence of the launch pad from the integrated system modal test. The Space Launch System (SLS) is no exception where the mobile launcher (ML) is used to support the vehicle for the integrated modal test (IMT). For the IMT, it is well understood from pre-test analysis with finite element models (FEMs) of the SLS and SLS coupled to ML that the ML has a significant influence on the SLS modal properties especially in the lower frequency range where the primary SLS bending modes exist. An accelerance decoupling (AD) method has been formulated for the purpose of “subtracting out” the influence of the ML from the IMT results. With AD, the SLS decoupled frequency response functions (FRFs) are directly extracted from the IMT FRFs. The subject approach is aimed to utilize measured data only and achieve a robust FRF decoupling scheme. AD is derived from a widely used coupling technique called “Receptance Coupling” (RC). The AD core equation reverses the RC process and utilizes a pair of auxiliary equations that enable the core equation to be resolved based on measured data only. In AD, the decoupled component FRFs are extracted from the coupled system FRFs with a transformation to remove the contribution of the “subtractive component”. This paper addresses the AD’s operational flexibility to resolve SLS free-free modal properties from coupled system measured data but also the possibility to include data from FEM if there is enough confidence in the FEM or if it is asserted that the effect to the final outcome is reasonable.

Launch vehicle ascent stability analyses typically rely on a combination of frequency and time domain analyses. Frequency domain analysis uses a sequence of high-fidelity linear models with constant parameters spanning the ascent trajectory. Complementary time domain analysis is performed using high-fidelity, nonlinear 6-DOF simulations. Analyses are typically dispersed to verify robustness to parameter variations by showing the vehicle meets frequency domain stability margin requirements and time domain performance metrics. This Technical Bulletin outlines standard stability margin best practices and provides recommendations for treatment of deviations from industry-standard launch vehicle stability margins due to vehicle flexibility, slosh dynamics, aerodynamics, other offending dynamics, or coupling thereof.

NESC’s perspective for crewed spaceflight: Acceptance of flight control gain/phase stability margin reductions from industry standards should be accompanied by an adequately extensive technical treatment, including: •Analyzing the fundamental physics involved, with applicable simulation tool verification (particularly if results are dissimilar among rules of thumb, linear tools, nonlinear analysis, and flight data) •Conducting sensitivity studies in time and frequency domains to analyze effects of possible parameter and system variations •Studying the effects of the consequence of instability associated with offending modes by running stressing cases in time domain •Assessing alternative flight control designs to demonstrate that present design appropriately balances overall vehicle risk (i.e., quantitatively delineate chosen tradeoffs between various stability margins and vehicle performance in the context of risk/consequence) Work presented here represents an example summary of expected engineering work to flight-certify crewed missions with unstable slosh modes and reduced stability margins

Before the Artemis I mission launches on its way around the Moon, the launch team at Kennedy Space Center and supporting teams across the country will begin the launch countdown about two days before liftoff. The launch countdown contains "L Minus” and "T Minus" times. "L minus" indicates how far away we are from liftoff in hours and minutes and does not include built-in holds. “T minus” time is a sequence of events that are built into the launch countdown where counting and holds are inserted. The 730,000 gallons of propellants that will be loaded into the rocket are liquid oxygen (LO2) and liquid hydrogen (LH2). Pauses in the countdown, or "holds," are built into the countdown to allow the launch team to target a precise launch window, and to provide a cushion of time for certain tasks and procedures without impacting the overall schedule. For the Artemis I countdown, planned built-in holds vary in length and occur at the following times: L-8 hours, 40 minutes, and L-40 minutes.

Methane sensor technology is employed in industry sectors from oil and gas to agriculture, landfills, and monitoring of natural emissions. The US oil and gas sector is extensive in scale, critical to fulfilling US energy needs, and deals with commodities presenting enormous challenges for personnel safety and the environment. Thus, it is imperative that they have accurate and responsive sensors to detect hazardous gases such as methane. US space launch systems will increasingly also use liquefied methane and liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is mostly methane, in quantities large and small, as main and auxiliary propulsion and power. Some of these systems will be reusable, which adds the unique challenge of processing a vehicle that has residual commodities and has returned to its launch site to be readied for its next launch. The methane sensors test and evaluation project (M-STEP) began within the context of a reusable launch system, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Experimental Spaceplane (XSP) program, which would have employed a high-pressure gaseous methane and gaseous oxygen reaction control system. Although the XSP partnership between Boeing and DARPA was terminated by Boeing in early 2020, DARPA and KSC have continued to collaborate in the area of gas sensors with the hydrogen sensor test and evaluation project (H-STEP) and with M-STEP. The NASA Launch Services program (LSP) invested in M-STEP in FY 2021 “to evaluate and understand the state-of-the-art in methane gas sensors”. M-STEP and the LSP effort was complementary, pushing in the same direction to understand US launch system stakeholder needs and approaches, requirements internal (NASA) and external, and commercially available or forthcoming methane sensing technologies, practices, and approaches. In addition, M-STEP (as with H-STEP) enhances KSC capabilities and understanding of these technologies, informing agency investments and further research in these areas.

The purpose of this document is to provide a final report on the Deorbit, Descent, and Landing (DDL) Tipping Point program, a public-private partnership between Blue Origin and NASA that is partially funded by NASA contract 80LARC19C0005. In this report we summarize the results of the entire contract, including recommendations and conclusions based on the experience and results obtained. Only the portions funded by the government with associated unlimited rights are documented in detail in this report. For the work funded by Blue Origin, summaries with unlimited rights are provided for context and completeness. The Blue Origin funded work exceeded 25% of the originally proposed total program cost and included a mixture of hardware procurement and critical technology maturation. The scope of this document is a discussion of all the major tasks performed under the contract including the sensor flight demonstrations on New Shepard, the hardware in the loop lunar landing navigator demonstration, and the ground testing of the Flash LiDAR hazard sensor. The contributions from the multiple NASA teams – Johnson Space Center, Langley Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory – are described along with the contributions from Blue Origin. This document is the Final Report for statement of work item 4.1.2.10 as Deliverable 5.8.

The breakup of the Space Shuttle Columbia on 1 February 2003 during the entry phase of the STS-107mission occurred above a significant number of aircraft operating in the National Airspace System (NAS).Although no aircraft were struck by falling debris, the incident led the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to seek cooperative ways to betterprotect aircraft operating in the NAS during Space Shuttle launch and landing operations. Applicationswere developed and improved by both the FAA and NASA to provide pre-operation and near real-timegroundtracks and debris footprints to enable Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) to vector aircraft away from thedebris field in the event of a Space Shuttle breakup. Real-time coordination processes were also developedto provide the FAA data and insight into ongoing Space Shuttle operations in order to protect the NAS.The processes and procedures developed for Space Shuttle operations are extensible and applicable tofuture NASA and commercial spacecraft.

NASA is developing an expendable heavy lift launch vehicle capability, the Space Launch System, to support lunar and deep space exploration. To support this capability, an updated ground infrastructure is required including modifying an existing Mobile Launcher system. The Mobile Launcher is a very large heavy beam/truss steel structure designed to support the Space Launch System during its buildup and integration in the Vehicle Assembly Building, transportation between the Vehicle Assembly Building and launch pad 39B by the Crawler Transporter, and provides the launch platform at the launch pad. As part of the Verification and Validation of the Mobile Launcher and Crawler Transporter, two rollouts of the Mobile Launcher transported by the Crawler Transporter, Integrated System Verification and Validation (ISVV) 005 and 010, have been performed to demonstrate the Crawler Transporter’s ability to transport the Mobile Launcher. ISVV-005 occurred in September 2018 and ISVV-010 occurred in late June 2019. ISVV-005 and ISVV-010 also provided the opportunity to gather data that can be used identify the Mobile Launcher on the Crawler Transporter rollout modal characteristics and refine the estimates of the Artemis I integrated launch vehicle rollout forcing functions. While the rollout environment has historically produced relatively small launch vehicle structural loads for the Saturn/Apollo and Space Shuttle programs in comparison to launch and ascent loads, these relatively small structural loads are inputs to structural fatigue analyses. The same holds true for the Space Launch System. Because the rollout forces acting on the Mobile Launcher and the Crawler Transporter are not directly measurable, Operational Modal Analysis techniques, instead of traditional Experimental Modal Analysis techniques, provide an empirical means to identify the Mobile Launcher on the Crawler Transporter rollout modal characteristics. The ISVV-010 rollout modal characteristics provide important supplemental modal information, which along with the Mobile Launcher modal test that was performed in June 2019 immediately prior to ISVV-010 rollout, combine to reduce uncertainty in the test correlated Mobile Launcher on the Crawler Transporter finite element model. A well test correlated finite element model will play a key role in the Building Block approach the Space Launch System program has implemented as part of its certification process for the Artemis I flight and in refining the Artemis I rollout forcing functions. At the time of the ISVV-005 rollout in September 2018, the Mobile Launcher was still undergoing construction, and therefore its modal characteristics are not directly comparable to those of the Mobile Launcher during the June 2019 Mobile Launcher modal test and subsequent ISVV-010 rollout. Hence the ISVV-005 rollout modal characteristics will not be looked at in this paper. This paper will briefly describe the Mobile Launcher and Crawler Transporter physical characteristics, ISVV-010 rollout data collection, the challenges in implementing Operational Modal Analysis techniques due in part to the Crawler Transporter harmonics, and how these challenges were overcome to obtain the ISVV-010 Mobile Launcher on the Crawler Transporter rollout modal characteristics.

The NASA-funded Pterodactyl project seeks to advance the current state-of-the-art for entry vehicles by developing novel guidance and control technologies for Deployable Entry Vehicles (DEVs). This paper presents the guidance and control design and analysis for a mechanically-deployed DEV with a symmetric aeroshell and aerodynamic control surfaces. We present guidance tuning using both bank angle modulation with the Fully-Numerical Predictor Corrector Entry Guidance technique (FNPEG) and angle of attack and sideslip modulation with FNPEG with uncoupled range control (FNPEG URC). We show the control system design and simulation results for tracking both types of guidance commands.

The use of sensor redundancy is crucial in aerospace systems to maintain safe, reliable operation. While hardware redundancy is more common in application, analytical redundancy can provide a viable alternative in systems where the installation of multiple redundant sensors is not viable. To this end, the use of Kalman filters to analytically validate sensor measurements within rocket engines was explored. First, a dynamic model of the RS 25 engine, a derivative of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), was reduced to a subset of relations, focused around the main combustion chamber pressure. These relations were used within the Kalman filter algorithm to generate an estimate of sensor measurements to be compared with true measurements for data validation purposes. By using a bank of Kalman filters, the residuals between the estimated and true measurements were used to detect and isolate sensor faults. Through fault simulations, the sensor validation performance of this Kalman filter bank design was compared to a hardware redundancy check. Sensor bias and drift faults of various magnitudes were injected into nominal RS 25 engine test data. Results for both approaches show comparable fault detection with most bias faults found nearly instantaneously by both algorithms. Drift fault detection results show certain cases where one algorithm is faster than the other. The key advantage of the Kalman filter algorithm is shown in fault isolation performance where it can isolate faults between two redundant sensors while the hardware redundancy comparisons cannot.

Commercial Crew Program Launch Operations Support

NASA is aggressively pursuing a human lunar return to the Moon with the Artemis Program. The Space Launch System (SLS) is critical to the transportation architecture, providing both crew and cargo capability. To accelerate SLS development, NASA settled on space shuttle heritage propulsion technologies. Early missions will use repurposed RS-25 engines from the Shuttle Program adapted to SLS requirements. For future missions, however, NASA and engine contractor Aerojet Rocketdyne are restarting RS-25 production with a goal of using the latest manufacturing technologies to produce an RS-25 variant that will cost at least 30 percent less than the shuttle-era engines developed and flown for almost 30 years. The prospect of restarting the production line on these engines after many years and modifying the engine to reduce cost and better match the needs of the SLS vehicle presented unique challenges and opportunities for NASA and Aerojet Rocketdyne. NASA and AR are now deep into the process of adapting 16 RS-25 engines for the first four SLS Artemis flights and building the first RS-25 “Restart” engines for future Artemis missions. In addition to navigating programmatic, technical, and logistical challenges with the current RS-25 production work, NASA and AR have partnered to pursue new methods of building this engine through advanced manufacturing techniques to further reduce the cost and schedule required to build each RS-25 engine to contribute to the long-term affordability of the SLS vehicle. This presentation will discuss the goals for the restart program, the challenges, and results to date.

The radiometric calibration of OLI-2 for Landsat 9 uses two types of sources: pre-launch radiance calibrated sphere sources and on-board flight solar diffuser panels. For both calibration articles the instrument contractor, Ball Aerospace Corp. assured the NIST scale transfer via laboratory measurements. The NIST reflectance scale transfer was conducted for the OLI-2 two flight diffusers at the University of Arizona Optical Sciences Center. In this report we present an approach in which the per detector information can be derived for the reflectance panel sources from their BRDF characterization. Using such information enables a cross-check of the as measured reflectance results during the prelaunch diffuser collects illuminated by a Heliostat. This information then enables a derivation of the uncertainty levels to allow assessment of the two radiometric calibration paths agreement.

This report summarizes the Access to Space (A2S) Workshop held on February 25-27, 2020 at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and hosted by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD). This workshop solicited community input on the creation and management of an ESPA-class1payload pipeline for NASA SMD launches. The workshop brought together roughly 180 participants including scientists, engineers, instrument developers, launch providers, and policy makers across NASA centers, government agencies, commercial industry, research institutes, and academia.

This report presents a summary of the Corrective Measures Implementation (CMI) and Interim Measure (IM) implementation activities that occurred from May 2019 through December 2019 at the Mobile Launch Platform/Vehicle Assembly Building (MLPV) Area, Solid Waste Management Unit 056 (SWMU 056), located at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

In response to the 2018 White House Space Policy Directive- sustainable lunar exploration, and to the Vice President’s March 2019 direction to do so by 2024, NASA is working to establish humanity's presence on and around the Moon by: 1) sending payloads to its surface, 2) assembling the Gateway outpost in orbit and 3) demonstrating the first human lunar landings since 1972. NASA’s Artemis program is implementing a multi-faceted and coordinated agency-wide approach with a focus on the lunar South Pole. The Artemis missions will demonstrate new technologies, capabilities and business approaches needed for future exploration, including Mars. Assessing options to accelerate development of required systems, NASA is utilizing public-private engagements through the Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) Mission Directorate’s NextSTEP Broad Agency Announcements. The design, development and demonstration of the Human Landing System (HLS) is expected to be led by commercial partners. Utilizing efforts across mission directorates, the Artemis effort will benefit from programs from the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) and Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD). SMD’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative will procure commercial robotic lunar delivery services and the development of science instruments and technology demonstration payloads. The Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) portfolio of technology advancements relative to HLS include lunar lander components and technologies for pointing, navigation and tracking, fuel storage and transfer, autonomy and mobility, communications, propulsion and power. In addition to describing the objectives and requirements of the 2024 Artemis mission, this paper will present NASA’s approach to accessing the lunar surface with an affordable human-rated landing system, current status and the role o a sustainable lunar presence.

A launch vehicle ground-wind-loads program is underway at the NASA Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. The objectives are to quantify key aerodynamic and structural characteristics that impact the occurrence of large wind-induced oscillations of a launch vehicle when exposed to ground winds prior to launch. Of particular interest is the dynamic response of a launch vehicle when a von Kármán vortex street forms in the wake of the vehicle resulting in quasiperiodic lift and drag forces. Vehicle response to these quasiperiodic forces can become quite large when the frequency of vortex shedding nears that of a lowly-damped structural mode thereby exciting a resonant response. Wind approaching the vehicle can be characterized by a varying speed with height and turbulence content. The combination of both the varying speed and turbulence content is referred to herein as the atmospheric boundary-layer. The importance of the atmospheric boundary-layer upon launch vehicle wind-induced oscillation response has long been questioned, and its effects are not well understood. Although there are several facilities around the world dedicated to replicating atmospheric boundary layers, the development of such a boundary layer in a wind tunnel capable of producing flight-representative Reynolds numbers for aeroelastically-scaled launch vehicle models has only recently been accomplished. The NASA Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel is capable of simulating flight-representative Reynolds numbers of launch vehicles on the pad and is uniquely capable of replicating many fluid-structure scaling parameters typical of aeroelastic tests. Recent test efforts successfully developed representative atmospheric boundary-layers for three launch sites in the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel, thereby allowing all known aerodynamic and fluid-structure coupling parameters to be simultaneously simulated for those sites. Dynamic aeroelastically-scaled models representative of typical large launch vehicles were constructed for testing. Aeroelastic scaling includes matching geometry, mode shapes, reduced frequencies, damping, running mass ratios, and running stiffness ratios. The models were tested in smooth uniform flow and then immersed in the atmospheric boundary-layer for comparison of these effects. Dynamic data were acquired measuring unsteady pressure, acceleration, and base bending moment. It was discovered that peak dynamic loads resulting from resonant wind-induced oscillation response are similar when acquired in either smooth uniform flow or an atmospheric boundary-layer. This indicates that resonant lock-in events are minimally impacted by representative turbulence and/or wind profile. Alternately, nonresonant wind-induced oscillation response events are stronger when acquired in an atmospheric boundary-layer. This indicates that a lowly-damped structural response will increase when exposed to an increased magnitude of random excitation, which is consistent with historical comparisons. Loads created by the resonant response events were substantially stronger than those from the nonresonant response events. Therefore, if testing is done to simply identify worst-case conditions and load magnitude, then smooth uniform flow is likely an adequate test technique. However, if nonresonant response loads are of primary interest, then atmospheric boundary-layer simulation is required.

Excitement is building for the first launch of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS), a unique exploration asset for the agency’s Artemis lunar program as well as for a new generation of science missions. SLS is designed for an array of missions beyond Earth’s orbit. The flexible system, which can be configured for Orion, cargo or Orion with co-manifested payload missions, offers high escape velocities to send more mass to deep space destinations. When configured with an 8.4 m-diameter fairing, SLS offers unmatched payload volume for human exploration and science missions. The initial Block 1 variant will insert at least 26 metric tons (t) to trans-lunar injection (TLI) and the more powerful Block 1B vehicle will launch 34-37 t to TLI using a new-development upper stage. Much of the initial SLS Block 1 vehicle is complete, including the upper stage and payload section, the core stage, engines and the solid rocket boosters. The first mission, Artemis I, launching from modernized and upgraded facilities at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), will be an uncrewed test flight of SLS, Orion and ground processing, with a primary objective of testing Orion’s heat shield at lunar re-entry velocity. Artemis I will have accommodations for 13 6U CubeSat payloads. These CubeSat missions will be deployed along the upper stage disposal trajectory after Orion separates from the vehicle. A rare opportunity for CubeSats to be deployed beyond low Earth orbit (LEO), Artemis I CubeSat missions range from searching for hydrogen and other volatiles on the lunar South Pole to studying the acceleration mechanisms of solar and interplanetary particles from a heliocentric trajectory. With manufacturing of the initial vehicle complete, fabrication and procurement is progressing for the second flight of SLS and Orion, Artemis II. Also an SLS Block 1 and Orion flight launching from KSC, Artemis II will mark the return of American astronauts to deep space with a lunar flyby-free return trajectory mission. With the Artemis III flight, NASA has the goal to land the first woman and the next man on the Moon. Infrastructure beyond SLS will be required for this effort, including elements of the lunar Gateway as well as lunar rovers, landers and additional commercially supplied launch services. SLS, as the only vehicle with the capability to lift 26 t of mass to TLI in its initial Block 1 variant, will remain a key component of this new-era exploration program. Future variants – Block 1B and Block 2 –will lift 34-45 t to TLI. This paper will discuss the status of testing and integration for the Artemis I vehicle, manufacturing progress for the second vehicle and the manifest outlook for primary, co-manifested and secondary payloads in the current deep space exploration environment.

Many structures in a launch vehicle operate in liquid hydrogen, from the hydrogen fuel tanks through the ducts and valves and into the turbopumps. Calculating the structural dynamic response of these structures is critical for successful qualification, but accurate knowledge of the natural frequencies is based entirely on numerical or analytical predictions since testing in operating conditions is problematic. A comprehensive test/analysis program has therefore been performed at NASA/MSFC to enable accurate prediction of the modal characteristics of the Space Launch System’s (SLS) RS-25 Low Pressure Fuel Turbopump Inducer including the effects of fluid-added mass, mechanical property change at cryogenic temperatures, operation within tight tip clearances, acoustic/structure interaction, and hydroelasticity. The process also has to account for complicated cyclic symmetry mode shapes which can be easily mistuned in test, and geometric, boundary condition, and material modifications between the sub-scale inducer used as a test article and the actual flight component. The first phase of the program, documented previously, focused on testing of a cantilever beam in a number of fluids and temperatures to isolate the effects of fluid-added mass and temperature, while the second phase reported here documents the additional issues associated with the more realistic inducer test article. Preliminary structural dynamic analysis of the flight hardware including variability for the above parameters indicated potential severe resonances, requiring implementation of undesired programmatic constraints, so the improved predictive capability may allow removal of these constraints.
