A cien años de la construcción del Estadio Xalapeño Heriberto Jara Corona (inaugurado en 1925), este artículo realiza un análisis histórico integral del contexto en el que se gestó y construyó dicho inmueble, junto con una descripción espacial, con el fin de valorarlo como patrimonio cultural, ya que en él se reflejaron los anhelos de modernización posrevolucionarios (en México), la ideas urbanas de la ciudad jardín y la estética de la arquitectura funcionalista. Para lograrlo, en primer lugar se presenta un breve recuento de la relación entre cultura, patrimonio y arquitectura, para luego describir el periodo en que se intervino el lugar conocido como ciénega de Melgarejo, los trabajos previos realizados para construir el Stadium Jalapeño durante el gobierno de Adalberto Tejeda, y los problemas que enfrentó su sucesor, Heriberto Jara, al intervenir, solo tres años después, el mismo espacio urbano. Para ello, se realizó una investigación documental en los archivos históricos del Gobierno del estado de Veracruz y del Ayuntamiento de Xalapa.

Este artículo busca describir las estrategias de aprendizaje utilizadas por el estudiantado en lenguas extranjeras en algunos componentes de la lengua como la pronunciación, la gramática y el vocabulario durante el confinamiento de 2020 al 2022 en Costa Rica. Se trata de una investigación de tipo cualitativa descriptiva que presenta los resultados de manera estadística y porcentual. Se empleó el muestreo probabilístico simple para reclutar a la población participante, a la cual se le envió un consentimiento informado y un cuestionario en línea entre junio a septiembre de 2022. En lo referente a los resultados estos fueron analizados según la Taxonomía de Oxford (1990) que organiza las estrategias de aprendizaje en dos grandes grupos: las directas (memoria, cognitivas, compensación y las indirectas (metacognitivas, afectivas y sociales). A través del análisis de los datos obtenidos se concluye que las estrategias directas se imponen ante las indirectas en cuanto al estudio de la gramática y el vocabulario y que para el estudio de la pronunciación coexisten varias estrategias directas e indirectas en el proceso de aprendizaje de la lengua meta.

The aim of this paper is to examine the most relevant competitive factors of a shipyard. The method conducted interviews and questionnaires with multiple agents related to the company and analyzed several institutional, business, and academic documents. The case of study considered was the manufacturing center of Navantia, S.A. in the Ferrol estuary (A Coruña, North-West of Spain). The results indicate that the five most important competitive factors are the government and political support, the production organization, the product technology, manpower, and skills and knowledge. Thus, these five competitive factors are critical to analyze the competitiveness of a shipyard with the characteristics of the one studied for new uses of the ocean, such as offshore wind, wave energy, or aquaculture.

The objective of this work is to estimate the carbon footprint and water footprint inventory using primary information of the lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide production of SQM and Albemarle in the Atacama Salt Flat, which represented 30 % of global lithium production in 2020. A contribution of the work is demonstrating that these two operations have the lowest reported GHG global emissions per unit production of lithium carbonate and of lithium hydroxide, and that this is possible due to natural and anthropogenic characteristics. Another contribution is that the natural advantages of the Atacama deposit should remain crucial in this leadership in spite of the introduction of an assortment of technologies in the reduction of GHG emissions in the future. A third contribution is showing that the largest cause of the carbon footprint for lithium carbonate production at the Atacama Salt Flat was soda ash, with 63.1 % of the total.

Platelets are the critical target for preventing and treating pathological thrombus formation. However, despite current antiplatelet therapy, cardiovascular mortality remains high, and cardiovascular events continue in prescribed patients. In this study, first results were obtained with ortho-carbonyl hydroquinones as antiplatelet agents; we found that linking triphenylphosphonium cation to a bicyclic ortho-carbonyl hydroquinone moiety by a short alkyl chain significantly improved their antiplatelet effect by affecting the mitochondrial functioning. The mechanism of action involves uncoupling OXPHOS, which leads to an increase in mitochondrial ROS production and a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential and OCR. This alteration disrupts the energy production by mitochondrial function necessary for the platelet activation process. These effects are responsive to the complete structure of the compounds and not to isolated parts of the compounds tested. The results obtained in this research can be used as the basis for developing new antiplatelet agents that target mitochondria.

Abstract The aim of the present paper is to propose a new methodology for the production and installation of green artificial reefs (GARs) in shallow waters, with special attention to the transport stages. The process includes both onshore (manufacturing, road transport and unload at port) and offshore (load at port, sea transport, positioning, and deployment tasks) stages. Two different types of truck were analysed for the road transport. Furthermore, three different options were considered for sea transport: a workboat powered by liquefied natural gas, a barge using diesel (0.1% sulphur) as fuel, and an electric specific design barge. A simulation tool called AGARDO (Automatic Green Artificial Reef Deploy Optimisation) was developed for such a purpose. An estuary located in Galicia (North-West of Spain), where 180 GAR units must be installed, has been considered as case study. AGARDO was used to obtain results concerning process total time, equivalent CO2 emissions and costs for different scenarios. Consequently, the use of the proposed methodology allows the decision-maker to select the best option in terms of costs, emissions and time. AGARDO can be easily adapted to other case studies, with different onshore and offshore options.

The objective of the present work is to develop a sensitivity analysis to determine the most essential parameters that affects to the economic feasibility of a marine wind farm composed by platforms built in concrete material. The main purpose is to analyze how the input variables such as number of offshore wind turbines, the energy produced by one wind turbine, the interest rate, the capital cost, the electric tariff, etc. affect to the economic output variables: the Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE), the Internal Rate of Return (IRR), the Net Present Value (NPV) and the Discounted Pay-Back Period (DPBP) of the considered offshore wind farm. This paper studies the concrete floating offshore wind platform SATH®, developed by the SAITEC enterprise. Results indicate what are the most relevant variables in economic terms to take them into consideration for their installation in the future.

The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in the environment has been a bottleneck for scientific society. Several approaches have been described as possibilities for reducing MPs in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; however, most of them are not environmentally friendly. Filamentous fungi (Ff) cells are currently considered a promising solution as a treatment for MPs. Therefore, the present study reports the potential ability of Ff isolated from mangrove sediments to biodegrade low-density polyethylene MPs (LDPEMPs). Six Ff strains were grown in batch cultures for 28 days, and one of them, Aspergillus sp. (AQ3A), showed the most prominent profile to biodegrade polymeric compounds. After morphological and molecular analysis, all strains were identified as belonging to the genera Aspergillus (MQ1C, AQ2A and AQ3A), Penicillium (MQ1A), and Trichoderma (MQ1B and MQ2A). The strain Aspergillus sp. (AQ3A) showed the most promising results with a LDPEMPs reduction rate of 47% and biomass formation of 0.0890 g·mL−1. Complementary studies with Aspergillus sp. (AQ3A) using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) highlighted changes in the molecular structure of LDPEMPs. These results indicate that Ff can contribute to the biodegradation of LDPEMPs. However, other parameters, mainly associated with the enzymes that are involved in this biodegradation process, need to be explored.

Objective: To investigate the association of sleep and circadian hygiene practices (sleep-promoting and sleep-disturbing behaviors) with sleep quality indicators. Methods: Participants (n = 2050; 18–65 y) were part of virtual population-based research. Logistic regression models were fitted to assess differences in the OR (95% CI) of poor quality with sleep-promoting/disturbing practices (time-of-day of exercise, pre-bedtime routine, naps, electronic devices with illuminated screens, caffeine and alcohol consumption, and smoking). Linear regression analyses evaluated differences in sleep duration, latency, and awakenings associated with the same variables. Restricted cubic splines were used to study the shape of the association of screen time before bed with sleep duration, latency, and awakenings. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, region, marital status, educational level, evening diet quality, and BMI. Results: Evening use of electronic devices with illuminated screens showed a negative effect on all sleep parameters. Reporting dinner as the largest meal and evening caffeine consumption was associated with shorter sleep duration and longer sleep latency. Smokers had higher odds of longer latency. A protective effect of morning exercises was demonstrated on sleep quality, latency, and awakenings. Alcohol consumers presented lower odds of poor quality and lower frequency of awakenings. Pre-bedtime practices showed no or negative effect on sleep outcomes. Conclusions: Recommendations to promote sleep quality and prevent sleep-related problems, with corresponding circadian health benefits, should include engaging in regular exercise, preferably in the morning, and avoiding naps, heavy meals close to bedtime, caffeine, smoking, and evening screen exposure.

Abstract Pollution by metalloids, e.g., tellurite and selenite, is of serious environmental concern and, therefore, there is an increasing interest in searching for ecologically friendly solutions for their elimination. Some microorganisms are able to reduce toxic tellurite/selenite into less toxic elemental tellurium (Te) and selenium (Se). Here, we describe the use of the environmentally relevant β‐proteobacterium Aromatoleum sp. CIB as a platform for tellurite elimination. Aromatoleum sp. CIB was shown to tolerate 0.2 and 0.5 mM tellurite at aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the CIB strain was able to reduce tellurite into elemental Te producing rod‐shaped Te nanoparticles (TeNPs) of around 200 nm length. A search in the genome of Aromatoleum sp. CIB revealed the presence of a gene, AzCIB_0135, which encodes a new methyltransferase that methylates tellurite and also selenite. AzCIB_0135 orthologs are widely distributed in bacterial genomes. The overexpression of the AzCIB_0135 gene both in Escherichia coli and Aromatoleum sp. CIB speeds up tellurite and selenite removal, and it enhances the production of rod‐shaped TeNPs and spherical Se nanoparticles (SeNPs), respectively. Thus, the overexpression of a methylase becomes a new genetic strategy to optimize bacterial catalysts for tellurite/selenite bioremediation and for the programmed biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles of biotechnological interest.

Uterine arteriovenous malformations are a rare cause of puerperal haemorrhage, but their incidence is increasing due to both improved diagnosis and the more frequent use of uterine surgery in recent years. The use of ultrasound, both B-mode and Doppler, is recommended for diagnosis and follow-up, as it has been shown to be the simplest and most cost-effective method. Endometrial thickening associated with an anechoic and vascular intramiometrial structure is very useful for diagnosis and can help to exclude other causes of dysfunctional bleeding. Pulsed Doppler shows low-resistance vessels and high pulsatility indices with a high peak systolic velocity (PSV). In a healthy myometrium, the vessels have a peak systolic velocity of 9–40 cm/s and a resistance index between 0.6 and 0.8, whereas in the case of AVMs, the systolic and diastolic velocities are 4–6 times higher (PSV 25–110 cm/s with a mean of 60 cm/s and a resistance index of 0.27–0.75 with a mean of 0.41). For treatment, we must individualise each case, taking into account haemodynamic stability, the patient’s reproductive wishes, and the severity of the AVM as assessed by its size and PSV.

The carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from thermoelectric power plants contribute to global warming. The Monoethanolamine (MEA) solution is the most widely used solvent for CO2 removal processes from these power plants with the disadvantage that it is expensive and corrosive at high concentrations. In this work, an experimental methodology is developed to fix the operating flow ratio (L/G) that ensures the maximum absorption capacity of MEA solution. The absorption system prototype and the experimental saturation technique are detailed. The main parameters of the experimental technique were the amount (0.65 and 1.30 kg) and concentrations (10,15, 20, 25, and 30 wt%) of MEA solution with CO2 inlet gas concentration (12.5 vol%). The experimental technique shows that MEA saturation occurs when the maximum temperature increase in the solution. Continuous tests were developed to operate the absorption system with the maximum absorption capacity of the MEA solution. The results show that the temperature increases in the MEA solution are a function of the flow rates (L/G) and the MEA concentration. Furthermore, the density, viscosity, and refractive index of CO2-free and CO2-saturated MEA solution at concentrations of MEA below 30 wt% are also measured in this work.

Abstract The SPATA5 gene encodes a 892 amino-acids long protein that has a putative mitochondrial targeting sequence and has been proposed to function in maintenance of mitochondrial function and integrity during mouse spermatogenesis. Several studies have associated homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in SPATA5 gene to microcephaly, intellectual disability, seizures and hearing loss. This suggests a role of the SPATA5 gene also in neuronal development. Recently, our group presented results validating the use of blood cells for the assessment of mitochondrial function for diagnosis and follow-up of mitochondrial disease, minimizing the need for invasive procedures such as muscle biopsy. In this study, we were able to diagnose a patient with epileptogenic encephalopathy using next generation sequencing. We found two novel compound heterozygous variants in SPATA5 that are most likely causative. To analyze the impact of SPATA5 mutations on mitochondrial functional studies directly on the patients' mononuclear cells and platelets were undertaken. Oxygen consumption rates in platelets and PBMCs were impaired in the patient when compared to a healthy control. Also, a decrease in mitochondrial mass was observed in the patient monocytes with respect to the control. This suggests a true pathogenic effect of the mutations in mitochondrial function, especially in energy production and possibly biogenesis, leading to the observed phenotype.

El presente análisis tiene como objetivo documentar las experiencias del estudiantado de chino como lengua extranjera sobre el aprendizaje virtual de este idioma en Costa Rica. Se identifican tres objetivos específicos: identificar las ventajas experimentadas por el estudiantado de chino durante el aprendizaje virtual de esta lengua, describir los inconvenientes e identificar las dificultades del estudiantado de chino durante el aprendizaje virtual de este idioma en Costa Rica durante los años 2020 a 2022. Esta investigación tiene como base el paradigma positivista con un enfoque cuantitativo de tipo transversal que describe los datos de manera estadística de 57 estudiantes costarricenses. Dentro de los principales resultados obtenidos se pueden citar la flexibilización del proceso de aprendizaje, la posibilidad de continuar sus estudios de chino a pesar de estar confinados por la pandemia, el incremento de la motivación y un alto grado de autonomía. El principal inconveniente y /o dificultad a el que debieron enfrentar a parte de los desafíos tecnológicos, se encuentra en la disminución de la interacción oral en clase con sus pares. Se concluye que, este campo de investigación es tan vasto que se podría explorar realizando un estudio sobre la experiencia docente en la virtualidad en la pandemia.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are age-related pathologies in which alterations of hematopoietic stem cells lead to abnormal formation of blood cells. Here, the authors study the lesions that these cells undergo in aging and disease, characterizing a factor whose alteration in MDS leads to abnormal blood cell production.

Age parameters in cetaceans allow examining conservation and studying individuals with growth affection. The age and sexual maturity of 51 stranded Stenella coeruleoalba striped dolphins from the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) of Costa Rica, most suffering brucellosis (95.6%), were assessed. In order to ascertain the dolphins’ ages, we measured the length and growth of dentin-layer group counts (GLGs) and assessed flipper bone radiography without (FBSA) and with a formula (FBF). Sexual maturity was determined through gonadal histology and sexual hormone serum levels. Compared with a model based on S. coeruleoalba ages estimations in other latitudes, the striped dolphin studied displayed deficient growth parameters, with considerable variability in length, teeth, and flippers bone development. Close to 43% (n = 15) of GLGs’ measurements were below the body length average ranges for the predicted age, suggesting developmental abnormalities. Likewise, 34.4% and 31.2% of the dolphins assessed by FBSA and FBF were also below the body length based on age prediction curves, also indicating developmental abnormalities. This information is supported by the poor correlation between GLGs, FBSA, and FBF. Inconsistencies between sexually mature males and females related to GLGs, FBSA, and FBF were evident. Although the different oceanic settings of the ETP, such as contamination, food access, diseases, and other parameters, may influence size variation, our data also suggest that long-lasting debilitating brucellosis may account for detrimental growth in the ETP striped dolphins. Our study highlights the possible deleterious consequences of chronic infectious diseases in the cetacean populations already confronting distressful conditions.

Dentro de los estudios gordos se deben abordar técnicas de investigación que permitan acceder a capas del discurso que van más allá de lo verbal. La técnica cualitativa de mapas corporales digitales supone una herramienta apropiada que nos acerca a les ‘cuerpes’ y permite hacer ejercicios autorreflexivos a todes les participantes del proceso de investigación. Adaptar técnicas comúnmente desarrolladas en espacios físicos a espacios online supone un reto metodológico que amplía las dimensiones de análisis al entrecruzarse y difuminarse las fronteras de lo físico y lo digital. En este artículo se explora la técnica de investigación de los mapas corporales digitales aportando una definición de la técnica. Se expone una genealogía de las técnicas similares y se reflejan los resultados que permite esta técnica obtener.

The global population is expected to have about 131.5 million people living with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementias by 2050, posing a severe health crisis. Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that gradually impairs physical and cognitive functions. Dementia has a variety of causes, symptoms, and heterogeneity concerning the influence of sex on prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes. The proportion of male-to-female prevalence varies based on the type of dementia. Despite some types of dementia being more common in men, women have a greater lifetime risk of developing dementia. AD is the most common form of dementia in which approximately two-thirds of the affected persons are women. Profound sex and gender differences in physiology and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions have increasingly been identified. As a result, new approaches to dementia diagnosis, care, and patient journeys should be considered. In the heart of a rapidly aging worldwide population, the Women’s Brain Project (WBP) was born from the necessity to address the sex and gender gap in AD. WBP is now a well-established international non-profit organization with a global multidisciplinary team of experts studying sex and gender determinants in the brain and mental health. WBP works with different stakeholders worldwide to help change perceptions and reduce sex biases in clinical and preclinical research and policy frameworks. With its strong female leadership, WBP is an example of the importance of female professionals’ work in the field of dementia research. WBP-led peer-reviewed papers, articles, books, lectures, and various initiatives in the policy and advocacy space have profoundly impacted the community and driven global discussion. WBP is now in the initial phases of establishing the world’s first Sex and Gender Precision Medicine Institute. This review highlights the contributions of the WBP team to the field of AD. This review aims to increase awareness of potentially important aspects of basic science, clinical outcomes, digital health, policy framework and provide the research community with potential challenges and research suggestions to leverage sex and gender differences. Finally, at the end of the review, we briefly touch upon our progress and contribution toward sex and gender inclusion beyond Alzheimer’s disease.

A new bacterial strain has been isolated from the microbiome of solar panels and classified as Arthrobacter sp. Helios according to its 16S rDNA, positioning it in the “Arthrobacter citreus group.” The isolated strain is highly tolerant to desiccation, UV radiation and to the presence of metals and metalloids, while it is motile and capable of growing in a variety of carbon sources. These characteristics, together with observation that Arthrobacter sp. Helios seems to be permanently prepared to handle the desiccation stress, make it very versatile and give it a great potential to use it as a biotechnological chassis. The new strain genome has been sequenced and its analysis revealed that it is extremely well poised to respond to environmental stresses. We have analyzed the transcriptional response of this strain to PEG6000-mediated arid stress to investigate the desiccation resistance mechanism. Most of the induced genes participate in cellular homeostasis such as ion and osmolyte transport and iron scavenging. Moreover, the greatest induction has been found in a gene cluster responsible for biogenic amine catabolism, suggesting their involvement in the desiccation resistance mechanism in this bacterium.

Background: Our aim in this study is to evaluate the inter- and intraobserver correlation of the different shear-wave elastography (SWE) parameters (stiffness) in both control and pathological groups. Methods: Evaluations of cervical stiffness measurements were performed in 39 non-pregnant patients (21 cases without gynecological pathology and other 18 cases with cervical preinvasive cervical lesion susceptible to conization) aged between 18–65 years old, without vaginal infection other than HPV and without another gynecological pathology. We used SWE (shear modulus) endovaginal ultrasound. We performed the evaluation in the midsagittal plane of the uterine cervix with measurements at 0.5, 1 and 1.5 cm from external cervical OS, in both anterior and posterior cervical lips as well as the cervical canal. Sonoelastography was performed by two examiners, each one making two separate assessments of uterine cervical stiffness using SWE, in one single visit. Interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) with 95% CIs were used to assess intra and interobserver measurements repeatability. Results: We obtained an adequate intra and interobserver correlation (ICC 0.996–0.999) of stiffness in all anatomical sites both in normal and pathologic cervix (p < 0.005). The stiffness in normal cervix is from 38.28 ± 19.76 kPa vs to 61.58 ± 27.54 kPa in the pathological cervix. Conclusion: The SWE has an adequate intra and interobserver correlation for its use in evaluating both normal and pathological cervix.

Background Most patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) fail to derive significant benefit from programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) axis blockade, and new biomarkers of response are needed. In this study, we aimed to discover and validate spatially resolved protein markers associated with sensitivity to PD-1 axis inhibition in NSCLC.Methods We initially assessed a discovery cohort of 56 patients with NSCLC treated with PD-1 axis inhibitors at Yale Cancer Center. Using the GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiling (DSP) system, 71 proteins were measured in spatial context on each spot in a tissue microarray. We used the AQUA method of quantitative immunofluorescence (QIF) to orthogonally validate candidate biomarkers. For external independent validation, we assessed whole tissue sections derived from 128 patients with NSCLC treated with single-agent PD-1 axis inhibitors at the 12 de Octubre Hospital (Madrid) using DSP. We further analyzed two immunotherapy untreated cohorts to address prognostic significance (n=252 from Yale Cancer Center; n=124 from University Clinic of Navarra) using QIF and DSP, respectively.Results Using continuous log-scaled data, we identified CD44 expression in the tumor compartment (pan-cytokeratin (CK)+) as a novel predictor of prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) (multivariate HR=0.68, p=0.043) in the discovery set. We validated by QIF that tumor CD44 levels assessed as continuous QIF scores were associated with longer PFS (multivariate HR=0.31, p=0.022) and overall survival (multivariate HR=0.29, p=0.038). Using DSP in an independent immunotherapy treated cohort, we validated that CD44 levels in the tumor compartment, but not in the immune compartment (panCK–/CD45+), were associated with clinical benefit (OR=1.22, p=0.018) and extended PFS under PD-1 axis inhibition using the highest tertile cutpoint (multivariate HR=0.62, p=0.03). The effect of tumor cell CD44 in predicting PFS remained significant after correcting for programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) Tumor Proportion Score (TPS) in both cohorts. High tumor cell CD44 was not prognostic in the absence of immunotherapy. Using DSP data, intratumoral regions with elevated tumor cell CD44 expression showed prominent (fold change>1.5, adjusted p

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease affecting a growing number of elderly individuals. No disease-modifying drugs have yet been identified despite over 30 years of research on the topic, showing the need for further research on this multifactorial disease. In addition to the accumulation of amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau), several other alterations have been associated with AD such as calcium (Ca2+) signaling, glucose-, fatty acid-, cholesterol-, and phospholipid metabolism, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Interestingly, all these processes have been associated with the mitochondria–endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contact site (MERCS) signaling hub. We and others have hypothesized that the dysregulated MERCS function may be one of the main pathogenic pathways driving AD pathology. Due to the variety of biological processes overseen at the MERCS, we believe that they constitute unique therapeutic targets to boost the neuronal function and recover neuronal homeostasis. Thus, developing molecules with the capacity to correct and/or modulate the MERCS interplay can unleash unique therapeutic opportunities for AD. The potential pharmacological intervention using MERCS modulators in different models of AD is currently under investigation. Here, we survey small molecules with the potential to modulate MERCS structures and functions and restore neuronal homeostasis in AD. We will focus on recently reported examples and provide an overview of the current challenges and future perspectives to develop MERCS modulators in the context of translational research.

The coastal zone of the Canadian Arctic represents 10% of the world’s coastline and is one of the most rapidly changing marine regions on the planet. To predict the consequences of these environmental changes, a better understanding of how environmental gradients shape coastal habitat structure in this area is required. We quantified the abundance and diversity of canopy forming seaweeds throughout the nearshore zone (5–15 m) of the Eastern Canadian Arctic using diving surveys and benthic collections at 55 sites distributed over 3,000 km of coastline. Kelp forests were found throughout, covering on average 40.4% (±29.9 SD) of the seafloor across all sites and depths, despite thick sea ice and scarce hard substrata in some areas. Total standing macroalgal biomass ranged from 0 to 32 kg m–2 wet weight and averaged 3.7 kg m–2 (±0.6 SD) across all sites and depths. Kelps were less abundant at depths of 5 m compared to 10 or 15 m and distinct regional assemblages were related to sea ice cover, substratum type, and nutrient availability. The most common community configuration was a mixed assemblage of four species: Agarum clathratum (14.9% benthic cover ± 12.0 SD), Saccharina latissima (13% ± 14.7 SD), Alaria esculenta (5.4% ± 1.2 SD), and Laminaria solidungula (3.7% ± 4.9 SD). A. clathratum dominated northernmost regions and S. latissima and L. solidungula occurred at high abundance in regions with more open water days. In southeastern areas along the coast of northern Labrador, the coastal zone was mainly sea urchin barrens, with little vegetation. We found positive relationships between open water days (days without sea ice) and kelp biomass and seaweed diversity, suggesting kelp biomass could increase, and the species composition of kelp forests could shift, as sea ice diminishes in some areas of the Eastern Canadian Arctic. Our findings demonstrate the high potential productivity of this extensive coastal zone and highlight the need to better understand the ecology of this system and the services it provides.

The psychopathological model of mental health emphasizes dimensions such as depression and anxiety. The dual model however includes positive traits such as optimism and self-esteem. The current study compared both models to show which one better predicts psychological wellbeing as well as anxiety. The procedure utilized in this study included calculating a mental health index that combined optimism, self-esteem, depression and perceived stress scores. The sample for convenience consisted of 350 relatives of cancer patients. Their mean age was M = 39.87 years, SD = 14.87. Structural equation modeling was used to measure the effects of mental health over psychological well-being and anxiety. Findings reveal that both models produce similar size effects (> 0.26) of the explained variances. The dual model however has a greater capacity to predict psychological well-being (.65 versus .44) and anxiety (.46 versus .38). Finally, the article discusses implications of the dual model for diagnosis, interpretation and intervention.

This text aims to address the work of Portuguese artists whose use of embroidery and textile confers an experimental dimension to traditional techniques, interrogates established cultural frameworks, and explores intimate autobiographical practices and feminist positions. In some cases, their mastery of technique is undeniable, while others manifest a preference for poetical forms of deskilling or appropriation. The essay not only covers artists drawn from the worlds of painting, sculpture, and jewellery, and who belong to various generations, although they all produce, but also discusses examples in which embroidery is used as a form of homage by those who count themselves as admirers. In this way, we hope to enlarge the geographical and cultural universe typically covered in the literature.

El presente artículo, resultado del proyecto Tintas, esmaltes y engobes ecológicos , busca resolver la pregunta: ¿cómo reducir el impacto ambiental de ciertos acabados cerámicos, a través de la recolección de residuos para remplazar los componentes normalmente usados en la realización de estos acabados? La metodología de investigación de tipo cuantitativo se desarrolló en cuatro pasos: revisión bibliográfica, formulación química, recolección y catalogación, y desarrollo de las pruebas. El principal hallazgo de la investigación fue la fórmula para usar residuos de tóner, remplazando el óxido en la fórmula de tinta para cerámica; también se encontró una fórmula de tinta que funciona como bloqueador de esmalte. En el futuro se seguirán haciendo pruebas para optimizar los primeros resultados.

A strain of Leptospirillum sp. CC previously isolated from Akhtala polymetallic ore (Armenia) was studied. The main morphological and physiological characteristics of CC were revealed. The optimal growth temperature was 40 °C and optimal pH 1.5. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences (GenBank ID OM272948) showed that isolate CC was clustered with L. ferriphilum and possessed 99.8% sequence similarity with the strain L. ferriphilum OL12-2 (KF356024). The molar fraction of DNA (G + C) of the isolate was 58.5%. Bioleaching experiment indicates that L. ferriphilum CC can oxidize Fe(II) efficiently, and after 17 days, 44.1% of copper and 91.4% of iron are extracted from chalcopyrite and pyrite, respectively. The efficiency of L. ferriphilum CC in pyrite oxidation increases 1.7 times when co-cultivated with At. ferrooxidans ZnC. However, the highest activity in pyrite oxidation shows the association of L.ferriphilum CC with heterotrophic Acidocella sp. RBA bacteria. It was shown that bioleaching of copper and iron from chalcopyrite by association of L. ferriphilum CC, At. ferrooxidans ZnC, and At. albertensis SO-2 in comparison with pure culture L. ferriphilum CC for 21 days increased about 1.2 and 1.4–1.6 times, respectively.

Although platelets are anucleated cells, they have fully functional mitochondria, and currently, it is known that several processes that occur in the platelet require the action of mitochondria. There are plenty of mitochondrial-targeted compounds described in the literature related to cancer, however, only a small number of studies have approached their interaction with platelet mitochondria and/or their effects on platelet activity. Recent studies have shown that magnolia extract and mitochondria-targeted magnolol can inhibit mitochondrial respiration and cell proliferation in melanoma and oral cancer cells, respectively, and they can also induce ROS and mitophagy. In this study, the effect of triphenylphosphonium cation, linked by alkyl chains of different lengths, to the organic compound magnolol on human-washed platelets was evaluated. We demonstrated that the addition of triphenylphosphonium by a four-carbon linker to magnolol (MGN4) considerably enhanced the Magnolol antiplatelet effect by a 3-fold decrease in the IC50. Additionally, platelets exposed to MGN4 5 µM showed several differences from the control including increased basal respiration, collagen-induced respiration, ATP-independent respiration, and reduced ATP-dependent respiration and non-mitochondrial respiration.

O presente artigo aborda o processo de concepção e produção de uma exposição assente na problemática da imagem fotográfi ca e na importância do estudo do negativo e da prática do retoque para o cabal conhecimento dessa imagem. Dedicada à fotografi a de retrato e ao trabalho do estúdio fotográfico, centrada no espólio da antiga Foto-Carvalho, um estúdio em funcionamento em Estremoz desde 1936 até c. 2000, a exposição revela a complexidade da construção da imagem fotográfica. A sua organização envolveu a cidade e conferiu dimensão performativa à pesquisa académica, correspondendo às tendências actuais da investigação e da diversificação dos seus resultados.

Este análisis del documental Mina del Diablo fue realizado en el marco de la cursada virtual en la cátedra de Metodología de la Investigación en Comunicación (Facultad de Periodismo y Comunicación Social, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, 2021). Tiene por eje principal explicitar la realidad que se vive en Cerro Rico (Potosí, Bolivia, 2005) en torno a la minería infantil y a los roles naturalizados que se adjudican a los niños en relación al trabajo. Así mismo, se vela por mostrar a los lectores de qué manera operan los sistemas culturales y las creencias, y cómo a partir de ellas se consagra una imagen que permite materializar los principios morales que regulan a este lugar; de esta forma, pretendemos vislumbrar el andamiaje de un contexto territorialmente localizado y temporalmente acotado, reflejando una problemática del periodo 2005 sobre la política organizativa interna del país, junto a sus progresos y deficiencias.

Climate change has affected the Arctic Ocean (AO) and its marginal seas significantly. The reduction of sea ice in the Arctic region has altered the magnitude of photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) entering the water column, impacting primary productivity. Increasing cloudiness in the atmosphere and rising turbidity in the coastal waters of the Arctic region are considered as the major factors that counteract the effect of reduced sea ice on underwater PAR. Additionally, extreme solar zenith angles and sea-ice cover in the AO increase the complexity of retrieving PAR. In this study, a PAR algorithm based on radiative transfer in the atmosphere and satellite observations is implemented to evaluate the effect of these factors on PAR in the coastal AO. To improve the performance of the algorithm, a flag is defined to identify pixels containing open-water, sea-ice or cloud. The use of flag enabled selective application of algorithms to compute the input parameters for the PAR algorithm. The PAR algorithm is validated using in situ measurements from various coastal sites in the Arctic and sub-Arctic seas. The algorithm estimated daily integrated PAR above the sea surface with an uncertainty of 19% in summer. The uncertainty increased to 24% when the algorithm was applied year-round. The PAR values at the seafloor were estimated with an uncertainty of 76%, with 36% of the samples under sea ice and/or cloud cover. The robust performance of the PAR algorithm in the pan-Arctic region throughout the year will help to effectively study the temporal and spatial variability of PAR in the Arctic coastal waters. The calculated PAR data are used to quantify the changing trend in PAR at the seafloor in the coastal AO with depth < 100 m using MODIS-Aqua data from 2003 to 2020. The general trends calculated using the pixels with average PAR > 0.415 mol m−2 day−1 at the seafloor during summer indicate that the annual average of PAR entering the water column in the coastal AO between 2003 and 2020 increased by 23%. Concurrently, due to increased turbidity, the attenuation in the water column increased by 22%. The surge in incident PAR in the water column due to retreating sea ice first led to increased PAR observed at the seafloor (∼12% between 2003 and 2014). However, in the last decade, the rapid increase in light attenuation of the water column has restricted the increase in average annual PAR reaching the bottom in the coastal AO.

This paper defines a methodology for the economic feasibility analysis of a floating offshore wind farm composed of tensioned leg platforms, which are part of the EU ARCWIND research project. In this context, the phases and subphases of its life-cycle process are considered to deal with aspects such as bathymetry, characteristics of the platforms, distance from the farm to shore, distance from the farm to port and offshore wind speed. All the costs and other external parameters such as capital cost, electric tariff, interest rate, percentage of financing and corporate tax have been analysed to calculate the internal rate of return, net present value, discounted pay-back period and levelized cost of energy of the farm. This work studies a farm composed of TLP offshore wind platforms designed by CENTEC and located at Ribadeo in Spain. Results indicate the costs and the economic feasibility of this platform for deep waters. They indicate that the platform is economically feasible for the location selected.

El siguiente documento presenta una reflexión respecto a la investigación y la intervención en salud mental. Ésta ha surgido como una inquietud fundada en la forma cómo se logran análisis sobre la salud mental en la realidad social (individual y colectiva) y su lugar en la sociedad contemporánea. Para esto, se ha tomado en consideración algunas discusiones de otros autores, con una inquietud similar respecto a categorías como la clase social y el género; que ha permite ampliar y desarrollar reflexiones desde las cuales se logran lecturas complejas de este tema, superando así análisis que ubican los malestares mentales en individuos concretos. Esto también supone un acercamiento a una propuesta metodológica que puede ampliar los horizontes del análisis de la investigación y la intervención en salud mental.

Substrate reduction therapies (SRT) are a promising therapeutic approach for monogenic inherited metabolic diseases. Here the authors evaluate the therapeutic potential of an in vivo CRISPR/Cas9-mediated SRT to treat primary hyperoxaluria type I and demonstrate its safety and efficacy.

Abstract Neuroimaging scan and calcium/phosphorus metabolism evaluation should be considered in patients with new onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms, to provide an earliest detection of pathological and metabolic alterations, such as Fahr's syndrome.

En los últimos años se han realizado estudios cada vez más profundos en torno al modelo de ciudades universitarias (CU) en Latinoamérica, creándose una corriente que considera a dichas construcciones y proyectos como una tipología propia, independiente de las propuestas anglosajonas y europeas. Sin embargo, la mayoría de estos estudios se centraron en conjuntos hechos en las capitales nacionales, dejando de lado las interpretaciones locales de las provincias. El objetivo de este artículo es dar a conocer un proyecto de ciudad universitaria moderna, propuesto en 1957 para la provincia mexicana1, específicamente, para la Universidad Veracruzana (UV), en Xalapa. De igual manera, se busca analizar tipológicamente los elementos de la arquitectura moderna que fueron reinterpretados de manera local en dicho proyecto, inclusive las referencias hechas al caso más significativo de la república, la Ciudad Universitaria de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Así mismo, entender la incidencia que tuvieron las condiciones políticas, económicas y sociales del periodo en la propuesta proyectual y su posterior materialización. Para lograrlo fue necesario consultar archivos históricos regionales, junto con fuentes bibliográficas y hemerográficas. En conclusión, el proyecto, similar al resto de América Latina, respondió a la necesidad de modernización del país y represento los valores liberales modernos del siglo XX; de igual manera, incorporo a los elementos urbano-arquitectónicos modernos las particularidades naturales y culturales de la región.

Introducción: En los tiempos actuales los tintes naturales cobran importancia por su inocuidad, durabilidad y conservación ambiental. Otorgan identidad regional a todo proyecto de índole artesanal donde se empleen vegetales para teñir. El presente trabajo estudia el potencial tintóreo sobre fibra lana merino de las plantas autóctonas de la estepa patagónica. M&M: El área de recolección del material vegetal tintóreo se circunscribió a la zona sureste del Chubut, Argentina, correspondiendo al Distrito Florístico del Golfo San Jorge. Se aplicó la receta madre para la obtención del tinte y se desarrollaron tres tipos de procedimientos, pre-mordentado, mordentado directo y post-mordentado, dependiendo del momento de aplicación del alumbre. Se emplearon modificadores de color bicarbonato de sodio y sulfato de hierro. Mediante el uso de la tabla universal del sistema Munsell (Color, 2009) se estudió el tono, la luminosidad y saturación. Resultados: Se estudiaron 50 especies nativas de la Región Patagónica. En su totalidad se obtuvo la siguiente proporción: marrones 37%, amarillo 35 %, olivas 14%, grises 10% rosados 2 % y verdes 2%. Se destacan 9 especies de mayor saturación cromática. Los colores con mayor saturación se obtienen durante el proceso pre-mordentado. Las familias mejor representadas son Fabaceae y Asteraceae. Conclusiones: Del análisis de la literatura de plantas empleadas para tintes naturales en Argentina, surge que numerosas especies estudiadas en la presente investigación no registran antecedentes y resultan ser prometedoras brindando colores intensos de saturaciones elevadas. Podemos considerarlas verdaderos hallazgos y sugerirlas con alto potencial tintóreo para la fibra de lana merino.

Background: To compare the rate of levator ani muscle (LAM) avulsion between normal deliveries (ND) and forceps deliveries (FD) and to determine whether the difficulty of forceps application in FD is related to the occurrence of LAM avulsion. Methods: This prospective observational study included 240 primiparous patients (125 ND and 115 FD). FD were classified according to the difficulty of forceps application. The application was considered difficult if the fetal head was in a transverse position or if it was midforceps (head engaged by the leading part was above +2 stations) with the fetal head in the occipito-posterior position; otherwise, the application was considered easy. Ultrasound evaluation was performed 6 months after delivery, and complete avulsion was diagnosed when there was abnormal insertion of the LAM in all three central slices. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the ND and FD groups in the presence of LAM avulsion (15.6% vs. 38.3%; p < 0.0005), with a crude Odds Ratio (OR) of 3.36 and an adjusted OR of 4.219. However, there were no statistically significant differences in the LAM avulsion rates between the easy and difficult application groups (34.2% vs. 45.2%; p: 0.244). Conclusions: FD have higher rates of LAM avulsion than ND, although the difficulty of forceps application does not have an influence on the rates of LAM avulsion.

The Panama Canal (PC) expansion will have an impact on trading patterns and the manner in which goods are transported around the world. Once the third set of locks at the Canal began their operation, it was clear that the way in which vessels transited the canal and their maximum dimensions were going to change. As such, the expanded Canal will undoubtedly mean that a new kind of vessel will come into existence. In terms of dimensions, these Neopanamax ships will be adapted to how the locks operate. However, this effect will not be the same across the full range of traffic. After the first transit on 26 June 2016, it was possible to obtain access to transit data for Neopanamax ships. A thorough statistical study of these new datasets would involve analysing how these new locks impact the vessel size and seaborne transport.

This work presents a part of a research project on retouching gelatin glass plate photographic negatives, its intentions, impact of the practice on the image and object and its current state of conservation. This is a case study on the use of retouching techniques on a scientific collection belonging to the former Dr. Mendes Correia Anthropology Institute, of the Natural History and Science Museum - University of Porto (MHNC-UP). In scientific photography there is a need for a rigorous record and true representation, which sets apart this type of photographic collection from others. Any alterations, such as retouching, should therefore have little or none aesthetic intentions. Retouched negatives were identified in this scientific and academic collection, and allowed to ascertain the purpose of their use and support the need for its preservation.

Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a cardiac channelopathy characterized by a prolongation of the QT interval and T-wave abnormalities, caused, in most cases, by mutations in KCNQ1, KCNH2, and SCN5A. Although the predominant pattern of LQTS inheritance is autosomal dominant, compound heterozygous mutations in genes encoding potassium channels have been reported, often with early disease onset and more severe phenotypes. Since the molecular mechanisms underlying severe phenotypes in carriers of compound heterozygous mutations are unknown, it is possible that these compound mutations lead to synergistic or additive alterations to channel structure and function. In this study, all-atom molecular dynamic simulations of KCNQ1 and hERG channels were carried out, including wild-type and channels with compound mutations found in two patients with severe LQTS phenotypes and limited family history of the disease. Because channels can likely incorporate different subunit combinations from different alleles, there are multiple possible configurations of ion channels in LQTS patients. This analysis allowed us to establish the structural impact of different configurations of mutant channels in the activated/open state. Our data suggest that channels with these mutations show moderate changes in folding energy (in most cases of stabilizing character) and changes in channel mobility and volume, differentiating them from each other and from WT. This would indicate possible alterations in K+ ion flow. Hetero-tetrameric mutant channels showed intermediate structural and volume alterations vis-à-vis homo-tetrameric channels. These findings support the hypothesis that hetero-tetrameric channels in patients with compound heterozygous mutations do not necessarily lead to synergistic structural alterations.

The highly xerotolerant bacterium classified as Exiguobacterium sp. Helios isolated from a solar panel in Spain showed a close relationship to Exiguobacterium sibiricum 255-15 isolated from Siberian permafrost. Xerotolerance has not been previously described as a characteristic of the extremely diverse Exiguobacterium genus, but both strains Helios and 255-15 showed higher xerotolerance than that described in the reference xerotolerant model strain Deinococcus radiodurans. Significant changes observed in the cell morphology after their desiccation suggests that the structure of cellular surface plays an important role in xerotolerance. Apart from its remarkable resistance to desiccation, Exiguobacterium sp. Helios strain shows several polyextremophilic characteristics that make it a promising chassis for biotechnological applications. Exiguobacterium sp. Helios cells produce nanoparticles of selenium in the presence of selenite linked to its resistance mechanism. Using the Lactobacillus plasmid pRCR12 that harbors a cherry marker, we have developed a transformation protocol for Exiguobacterium sp. Helios strain, being the first time that a bacterium of Exiguobacterium genus has been genetically modified. The comparison of Exiguobacterium sp. Helios and E. sibiricum 255-15 genomes revealed several interesting similarities and differences. Both strains contain a complete set of competence-related DNA transformation genes, suggesting that they might have natural competence, and an incomplete set of genes involved in sporulation; moreover, these strains not produce spores, suggesting that these genes might be involved in xerotolerance.

Arsenic pollution in waters is due to natural and anthropogenic sources. Human exposure to arsenic is associated with acute health problems in areas with high concentrations of this element. Nanometric iron compounds with large specific surface areas and higher binding energy produced by some anaerobic microorganisms are thus expected to be more efficient adsorbents for the removal of harmful metals and metalloids than chemically produced iron oxides. In this study, a natural consortium from an abandoned mine site containing mainly Clostridium species was used to biosynthesize solid Fe(II) compounds, siderite (FeCO3) and iron oxides. Biogenic precipitates were used as adsorbents in contact with solutions containing arsenate and arsenite. The adsorption of As(V) fitted to the Langmuir model (qmax = 0.64 mmol/g, KL = 0.019 mmol/L) at the optimal pH value (pH 2), while the As(III) adsorption mechanism was better represented by the Freundlich model (KF = 0.476 L/g, n = 2.13) at pH 10. Water samples from the Caracarani River (Chile) with high contents of arsenic and zinc were treated with a biogenic precipitate encapsulated in alginate beads in continuous systems. The optimal operation conditions were low feed flow rate and the up-flow system, which significantly improved the contaminant uptake. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the application of biogenic iron compounds in the treatment of polluted waters.

Biohydrometallurgy recovers metals through microbially mediated processes and has been traditionally applied for the extraction of base metals from low-grade sulfidic ores. New investigations explore its potential for other types of critical resources, such as rare earth elements. In recent times, the interest in rare earth elements (REEs) is growing due to of their applications in novel technologies and green economy. The use of biohydrometallurgy for extracting resources from waste streams is also gaining attention to support innovative mining and promote a circular economy. The increase in wastes containing REEs turns them into a valuable alternative source. Most REE ores and industrial residues do not contain sulfides, and bioleaching processes use autotrophic or heterotrophic microorganisms to generate acids that dissolve the metals. This review gathers information towards the recycling of REE-bearing wastes (fluorescent lamp powder, spent cracking catalysts, e-wastes, etc.) using a more sustainable and environmentally friendly technology that reduces the impact on the environment.

This article discusses the state of the art for driving technologies of anchor handling winches for offshore operations. These systems are necessary for anchor handling operations associated with installation of many types of moored floating offshore structures. To perform these operations, it is necessary to use specialized vessels known as AHT (Anchor Handling Tug) or AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) vessel, which incorporate specific equipment such as towing winches, but with higher performance than conventional tugs both in size and in technical performance. There are nowadays two main options for driving the Anchor Handling/Towing winches: hydraulic with low or high pressure motors, and electrical with AC motors driven by Variable Frequency Drives. Additionally, a new technology is appearing in the industrial sector which is starting to be applied in the marine sector, and in some cases for anchor handing winches: the permanent magnet motor. The aim of this paper is to discuss these driving technologies and their importance in the future of this part of the marine sector.
