Biochar is considered a promising option for the development of sustainable agroecosystems, due to its diverse agronomic and environmental benefits. In this context, the aim of this study was to carry out a bibliometric analysis on biochar research in Brazil within an agricultural context, including investigating the raw materials most employed for its production in the country. The analysis was conducted based on a search for scientific articles (peer-reviewed papers) at the Web of Science database (WoS Core Collection) from 2003 to 2020 specifically in Brazil. A performance analysis was carried out by applying a descriptive and metric approach concerning research constituents (authors, institutions, countries and keywords) and science mapping to clarify scientific collaborations and cognitive and intellectual structure patterns regarding the biochar domain in Brazilian research, using the VOSviewer software. The obtained studies were also analyzed individually to classify the different raw materials employed in biochar production. A total of 261 scientific articles met the screening criteria, indicating that the beginning of biochar publications in Brazil took place in 2003, increasing until 2015 and peaking in 2021. Institutions and authors with the highest publication contributions were the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) (Novotny E.), São Paulo University (USP) (Cerri C.) and Federal Lavras University (UFLA) (Melo L.). The United States, Spain, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands present the most collaborations on biochar research with Brazil. The biochar domain was highly associated with the following keywords: biochar, pyrogenic carbon, pyrolysis, charcoal, immobilization, black carbon, soil fertility and soil and characterization. Raw materials of plant origin were the most employed in biochar research in Brazil, with wood residues being the most studied and residues originated from the sugar-energy industry (straw, bagasse and filter cake) identified as exhibiting high potential for future studies. Poultry litter is the most promising animal waste for biochar production, while the use of biosolids can be innovative, contributing to the consolidation of biochar as an option for serious urban waste sanitary management problems.

Calda bordalesa (CB), usada comumente em sistemas producao orgânica, pode aumentar os teores de cobre (Cu) no solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial de materiais ricos em compostos orgânicos na atenuacao de contaminacao por Cu em um solo argiloso. Foram testados fibra de coco (FC), bokashi (BO) e leonardita (LE), em tres doses. Os ensaios foram montados em bancada, em tubos de PVC, com material de um Latossolo Vermelho argiloso, que recebeu tres doses de 50,9 mg Cu na forma de CB. Foram realizadas amostragens regulares do percolado, ao longo de 47 dias de ensaio, para determinacao da quantidade de Cu mobilizado apos aplicacao de agua simulando a chuva no periodo do ensaio. Ao final, determinou-se o teor de Cu extraido por acidos fraco e forte e estimou-se a quantidade de Cu que permaneceu retida. Observou-se que FC e BO proporcionaram diminuicao do teor de Cu lixiviado em funcao de aumento das doses aplicadas, ao contrario da LE que proporcionou aumento de concentracao de Cu no percolado em funcao do aumento das doses aplicadas. BO apresentou a menor concentracao de Cu no percolado e as menores concentracoes retidas no solo. LE apresentou a maior concentracao de Cu no percolado e as maiores concentracoes retidas no solo. Conclui-se que estudos sobre a utilizacao continuada de CB devem ser obrigatorios para monitorar solo e agua, visando reduzir o risco de contaminacao ambiental.

There has been an increase in the area of secondary tropical forests in recent years due to forest restoration in degraded areas. Recent analyses suggest that the success of passive forest restoration is highly uncertain and needs to be better understood. This study aimed to investigate the behavior of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and some hydrophysical soil attributes between agricultural land uses, restored forests, and a degraded forest fragment. The areas evaluated are located in the municipality of Rio Claro, S&atilde, o Paulo, Brazil, under different types of land use: (i) two areas in the process of passive forest restoration: one of 18 and another of 42 years (NR18 and NR42), (ii) a degraded forest fragment (FFD), (iii) pasture (P), and (iv) sugarcane (SC). The hydraulic soil conductivity characterization was performed using the Beerkan method. Dry soil bulk density (BD), total porosity (Pt), macroporosity (Mac), microporosity (Mic), penetration resistance (PR), mean aggregate diameter (MWD), and soil organic carbon (OC) were also determined. The comparative analysis of the hydrophysical attributes of the soil superficial horizon in agricultural land uses (P and SC), restored forests (NR18 and NR42), and a degraded forest (DFF) confirms that the recovery of soil hydrological functioning in ongoing forest restoration processes can be a relatively slow process. In addition, the intensity of previous land use leaves footprints that can affect passive restoration areas for decades after agriculture abandonment, increasing the time for the recovery of Ks and soil hydrophysical attributes.

A certificacao de produtos orgânicos e uma exigencia do mercado internacional e nacional, garantindo o acesso a determinados nichos e a idoneidade do produto para o consumidor. O trabalho teve por objetivo analisar a certificacao de produtos orgânicos no Brasil e identificar os principais organismos certificadores utilizados, avaliando-se tambem a distribuicao dessas organizacoes por regiao do pais. Foram sistematizadas informacoes do Cadastro Nacional de Produtores Orgânicos (CNPO) do Ministerio da Agricultura, Pecuaria e Abastecimento (MAPA), referentes a 2015 e 2018. Os resultados mostram que a quantidade de produtores orgânicos cadastrados aumentou 61,9% em setembro de 2018, se comparado a marco de 2015. Verificou-se tambem que o sistema de certificacao por auditoria apresentou 6.360 produtores certificados no Brasil, sendo identificada maior concentracao de produtores certificados nos estados do Para com 955 e Sao Paulo, com 952. Os estados do Parana e Rio Grande do Sul, apresentaram maiores numeros de organismos participativos de avaliacao da conformidade (OPAC), 1446 e 1230 respectivamente. Ja para aqueles produtores que optam por venda direta de produtos orgânicos sem certificacao, classificados como (OCS), Sao Paulo lidera com 984, seguido de Pernambuco com 578. Conclui-se que o numero de produtores orgânicos no Brasil nos ultimos tres anos e crescente sendo a expansao mais acentuada nos estados da regiao Sul. O sistema de certificacao por auditoria (CA) apresentou o maior numero de produtores certificados no Brasil, sendo identificada uma maior concentracao de produtores certificados nas regioes Sudeste, Norte e Centro-Oeste.

A espécie e densidade de adubos verdes no consórcio com o milho modificam os padrões de competição interespecífica podendo alterar as respostas de temperatura e umidade do solo. Objetivou-se, neste estudo, analisar os efeitos da Crotalaria spectabilis e do Cajanus cajan na temperatura e umidade do solo, ao longo dos estádios de desenvolvimento do milho cultivado em consórcio, em sistema orgânico. O delineamento experimental foi blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram em três consórcios de milho: MC - Crotalaria spectabilis (5 plantas m -1); MG - Cajanus cajan (5 plantas m -1); MCG - Crotalaria spectabilis e Cajanus cajan (10 plantas m -1, cinco plantas de cada adubo verde), semeados na linha do milho e três tratamentos controles: M - milho; C - Crotalaria spectabilis e G - Cajanus cajan, solteiros. As leituras das temperaturas do solo foram realizadas na linha e entrelinha de semeadura, e, da umidade do solo, na linha de semeadura do milho, nos horários de 8, 12 e 17 horas, nos estádios fenológicos V5, V8, VT, R2, R4 e R6 do milho. As profundidades de avaliação foram 0-0,10, 0,10-0,20 e 0,20-0,40 m. Os horários, as profundidades e as posições linha-entrelinha influenciaram a temperatura do solo, enquanto as profundidades e os estádios fenológicos influenciaram a capacidade de retenção de umidade no solo. Os consórcios reduziram a temperatura do solo, principalmente o MG, que também reduziu a umidade do solo entre os estádios V8 e R2 do milho.

Land use change (LUC) alters soil structure and, consequently, the functions and services provided by these soils. Conversion from extensive pasture to sugarcane is one of the largest land transitions in Brazil as a result of the growth of the domestic and global demands of bioenergy. However, the impacts of sugarcane expansion on the soil structure under extensive pasture remains unclear, especially when considering changes at the microscale. We investigated whether LUC for sugarcane cultivation impacted soil microstructure quality. Undisturbed soil samples were taken from two soil layers (0–10 and 10–20 cm) under three contrasting land uses (native vegetation—NV, pasture—PA and sugarcane—SC) in three different locations in the central‐southern Brazil. Oriented thin sections (30 μm) were used for micromorphological analysis. The total area of pores decreased following the LUC in the following order: NV > PA > SC in both soil layers. The area of large complex packing pores (>0.01 mm²) also decreased with the LUC sequence: NV>PA>SC. Qualitative and semi‐quantitative micromorphological analysis confirmed porosity reduction was driven by the decrease in complex packing pores and that biological features decreased in the same LUC sequence as the quantitative parameters. Therefore, LUC for sugarcane expansion reduced microscale soil porosity, irrespectively of soil type and site‐specific conditions, indicating that the adoption of more sustainable management practices is imperative to preserve soil structure and sustain soil functions in Brazilian sugarcane fields.

Seeking to provide essential information about sustainable tillage systems, this work aimed to assess the effects of liming and soil cultivation systems on the soil hydrophysical attributes of a long-term cultivated sugarcane field in the tropical region of southeast Brazil. Infiltration tests and soil sampling down to 0.10 m were performed in order to determine saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, soil bulk density, soil total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, and soil resistance to penetration. The studied areas include no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) systems with 0 (CT0 and NT0) and 4 (CT4 and NT4) Mg ha−1 of lime, and an adjoining area with native forest (NF). The data analysis included an analysis of variance followed by the Tukey test to compare different systems, assessment of the Pearson correlation coefficient between variables, and a principal component analysis of the dataset. The lowest bulk density and highest soil total porosity, macroporosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity were found in the NF. The bulk density in CT4 and NT0 was higher than in other systems, indicating the need for amelioration. NT4 is suggested as the most viable system for conservation agriculture in sugarcane fields, combining the benefits of no-tillage and liming to enhance soil hydrophysical functions.

Environmental sustainability is attracting attention due to global environmental concerns and one of the main focuses is agricultural production. Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is a crop of global significance and one of the important issues to be addressed towards its sustainable production is how soil quality has been considered in sugarcane cultivation. This bibliometric study aimed to investigate how soil quality has been addressed in sugarcane management research, as well as to identify possible knowledge gaps to be considered in future studies. The bibliographic search was performed by using a combination of terms considering all databases from the Web of Science ® (WOS). A total of 160 scientific publications were found and the following information was analyzed: i) publication years, ii) countries, iii) institutions, iv) authors, and v) research areas. Furthermore, to identify possible gaps in the literature, we classified soil-related papers in the following categories: soil physics, soil chemistry, soil use and management, soil conservation, soil survey and classification, soil micromorphology, soil biology, soil geochemistry, and soil fertility and plant nutrition. We also presented the most cited papers and contribution maps for countries considering a subset of 119 articles from the WOS Core Collection database. Concerns about soil quality in the cultivation of sugarcane have increased in recent years, especially in the last 9 years, when 74 % of the total papers were published. Brazil is the country responsible for 99 out of 160 publications with 12 institutions and 13 authors responsible for the largest number of publications. From a total of 160 published articles, 97 % were related to agriculture research and 71 % to soil science, whereas soil use and management was the most reported category. We found a lack of studies of no-tillage systems in sugarcane cultivation that assess soil quality, and that integrate physical, chemical and biological indicators, including hydrophysical, micromorphological and macrofauna analyses as indicators of soil quality. Therefore, we suggest that these issues should be considered in future studies.

O manejo agrícola influencia a estrutura do solo, modificando os atributos físicos e o comportamento hídrico do solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da semeadura direta (SD) e do preparo convencional (PC) sobre a estrutura do solo, por meio de atributos físicos e da distribuição dos poros, utilizando imagens digitais 2-D. O estudo foi realizado em um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico com delineamento de blocos casualizados. A densidade do solo, macroporosidade, diâmetro médio ponderado (DMP), condutividade hidráulica do solo saturado (Kfs) e análise de imagens digitais 2-D (resolução de 156,25 μm2) foram avaliadas nas profundidades de 0-0,20 e 0,20-0,40 m. Os manejos não diferiram para a densidade e macroporosidade do solo. A SD revelou maior DMP e Kfs em relação ao PC. O PC apresentou maior área total de poros na profundidade de 0-0,20 m em relação ao SD, ocorrendo o inverso na profundidade de 0,20-0,40 m. A SD apresentou maior quantidade de poros complexos de tamanho grande (>0,156 mm2) na camada de 0,20-0,40 m em relação ao PC, que evidenciou predomínio de poros arredondados. A SD demonstrou melhorias na estrutura do solo em relação ao PC, com maior estabilidade dos agregados, condutividade hidráulica e área total de poros, contribuindo para a conservação do solo e da água em sistemas produtivos. Agricultural management affects soil structure, modifying soil physical properties and soil water movement. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) on soil structure through physical properties and pore distribution in 2-D digital images. The study was conducted in an Oxisol with a randomized block design. Soil bulk density, soil macroporosity, mean weighted diameter (MWD), saturated hydraulic conductivity (SHC), and analysis of 2-D digital images (156.25 μm2 resolution) were evaluated at the depths of 0-0.20 and 0.20-0.40 m. Management systems did not differ for soil bulk density and soil macroporosity. The NT showed higher MWD and SHC compared to CT. The CT had a greater total pore area at the 0-0.20 m depth in relation to NT, with the opposite occurring at the 0.20-0.40 m depth. The NT had a greater number of complex pores of large size (>0.156 mm2) at the depth of 0.20-0.40 m in relation to the CT, which showed a predominance of rounded pores. The NT showed improvements in soil structure in relation to the CT, with greater aggregate stability, hydraulic conductivity, and total pore area, contributing to soil and water conservation in production systems.

Knowledge of the hydraulic properties of the soil is of crucial importance to an understanding of the interactions between vegetation, soil and water. There is little information available about the hydraulic properties of Podzol soils found in tropical regions. The aim of this study was to present the soil morphology and hydraulic properties of a toposequence situated in a permanent plot at the Ilha do Cardoso State Park (Cananéia, SP, Brazil). Ultradetailed soil maps were used to define a toposequence inside the permanent plot. Five profiles, representing the main types of soil, were opened along the toposequence, in which Podzols are dominant. The levels of bulk density, sand content, porosity and permeability in these soils were all high. Consequently, these soils have a high level of hydraulic conductivity with low water retention. This behavior undergoes an alteration in the Bh and Bs horizons due to the accumulation of organic and metallic compounds and a changing structure that modifies the pore distribution. Furthermore, the characterization of the hydro-physical functioning of soils in natural environments is an important source of encouragement to further investigative study of soil water dynamics and its relationship to the native vegetation.

Erosion generates large amounts of sediment, which may be deposited at the site of origin, on the slope of a hill, or along waterways. The transportability of each type of sediment by runoff and its potential for subsequent deposition largely depends on its morphological features and particle size distribution. The aim of this study is to describe and characterize the morphology and micromorphology of sediments deposited in a reforested area and to understand the dynamics of the transport process. In order to understand the sedimentation processes, the following analyses were performed: particle size distribution, with and without the use of a dispersant solution; statistical analysis of the sand fraction using Folk and Ward parameters; sediment and soil micromorphology; and two-dimensional distribution and geometry of soil horizons and sediments. The sedimentation occurred in a localized and discontinuous manner and in the lowest parts of the landscape. The sediments were generated by low intensity erosive events producing well-sorted sediments and the clay in these deposits was transported mainly in the form of silt-sized clay aggregates. Microscopic analysis of the sediments was important for clarifying the genesis and transport dynamics of the sedimentary deposits.

The concept of soil quality is currently the subject of great discussion due to the interaction of soil with the environment (soil-plant-atmosphere) and practices of human intervention. However, concepts of soil quality relate quality to agricultural productivity, but assessment of soil quality in an agronomic context may be different from its assessment in natural areas. The aim of this study was to assess physical quality indices, the S index, soil aeration capacity (ACt/Pt), and water storage capacity (FC/Pt) of the soil from a permanent plot in the Caetetus Ecological Reserve (Galia, São Paulo, Brazil) under a seasonal semideciduous forest and compare them with the reference values for soil physical quality found in the literature. Water retention curves were used for that purpose. The S values found were higher than the proposed limit for soil physical quality (0.035). The A and E horizons showed the highest values because their sandy texture leads to a high slope of the water retention curve. The B horizons showed the lowest S values because their natural density leads to a lower slope of the water retention curve. The values found for ACt/Pt and FC/Pt were higher and lower than the idealized limits. The values obtained from these indices under natural vegetation can provide reference values for soils with similar properties that undergo changes due to anthropic activities. All the indices evaluated were effective in differentiating the effects of soil horizons in the natural hydro-physical functioning of the soils under study. O conceito de qualidade do solo é muito discutido atualmente em razão das relações do solo com o meio ambiente (solo-planta-atmosfera) e das práticas intervencionistas do homem. Esse conceito relaciona a qualidade com a produtividade agrícola, mas sua avaliação em um contexto agronômico pode ser diferente em ecossistema natural. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os índices de qualidade física do solo, o índice S, a capacidade de aeração do solo (ACt/Pt) e a capacidade de armazenamento de água do solo (CC/Pt) da parcela permanente localizada na Estação Experimental de Caetetus em Galia, São Paulo, Brasil, sob Floresta Estacional Semidecidual e compará-los com valores de referência de índices de qualidade física do solo encontrados na literatura. Para tanto, curvas de retenção de água foram utilizadas para o cálculo desses índices. Os valores do índice S encontrados foram superiores ao limite proposto de qualidade física do solo (0,035). Os horizontes A e E apresentaram os valores mais altos, pois sua textura arenosa refletiu em elevada inclinação da curva de retenção. Os horizontes B evidenciaram os menores valores de S, pois seu adensamento natural refletiu curvas de retenção com menor inclinação. Os valores de ACt/Pt e CC/Pt foram maiores e menores que os valores definidos como ideais. Os índices de qualidade física do solo, o índice S, a capacidade de aeração do solo (ACt/Pt) e a capacidade de armazenamento de água do solo (CC/Pt) sob vegetação natural podem representar valores de referência para solos com características semelhantes que sofrem alguma atividade ou influência antrópica. Todos os índices avaliados foram eficientes para diferenciar os efeitos dos horizontes no funcionamento físico-hídrico natural dos solos estudados.

A pesquisa foi conduzida em parcelas experimentais situadas na região de Campinas, cultivadas com feijão sob Sistema Plantio Direto (SPD) e Sistema Convencional com Grade (SC). Para determinação do IHO, os atributos densidade do solo (Ds), curva de retenção de água (CRA), curva de resistência do solo à penetração (RP) e porosidade de aeração foram determinados para camada do solo 0-0,20 m, a partir de amostras indeformadas extraídas de diferentes locais, de modo a representar uma faixa ampla de variação da densidade do solo. O monitoramento da qualidade do solo e do desempenho dos sistemas de produção foi efetuado com base em dados de: Ds, umidade volumétrica e produtividade da cultura de feijão, irrigado e não irrigado para uma safra agrícola de inverno. Os limites do IHO foram definidos pelo q-0,01MPa (limite superior) e pelo q-1,5MPa (limite inferior), para os valores de Ds até 1,2 kg dm-3. A partir deste valor de Ds, o limite inferior passa a ser definido pelo qRP. O período de dias em que o solo permaneceu fora das condições ideais de umidade estabelecidas pelo IHO foi suficiente para afetar diferencialmente a produtividade do feijoeiro nos tratamentos não irrigados, com vantagem para o SPD. O IHO representa um importante indicador na avaliação da qualidade estrutural do solo submetido a diferentes sistemas de manejo. Ainda, o IHO pode ser utilizado no monitoramento da qualidade física do solo associado a uma maior ou menor frequência de ocorrência da umidade do solo fora dos limites estabelecido pelo mesmo. E.LEAST LIMITING WATER RANGE TO ASSESS BEAN MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND YIELD 2 ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to understand the effect of two management systems, with and without irrigation, on soil physical properties and bean yield, using the concept of least limiting water range (LLWR). The study was conducted in experimental plots located in Campinas, planted with beans under no tillage system (NTS) and conventional system (SC). To determine the LLWR, bulk density (BD), water retention curve (WRC), soil resistance to penetration curve (SRPC) and macroporosity were determined for the layer 0-0.20 m, from undisturbed soil samples extracted from different locations to represent a wide range of bulk density. Monitoring of soil quality and performance of production systems was made based on the following data: BD, water content and productivity of bean crops, irrigated and non-irrigated, for a harvest of winter. The θ-0,01MPa determined the upper limit of the LLWR and θ-1,5MPa the lower limit to BD equal to 1.2 kg dm-3 from which the lower limit is set by SRPC. The period of days that the soil remained outside the ideal conditions of moisture established by the LLWR was enough to differentially affect bean yield in non-irrigated treatments, with better results for NTS. The LLWR is an important indicator for assessing the soil structural quality under different management systems. Additionally, the LLWR can be used to monitor the soil physical quality associated with a higher or lower frequency of occurrence of soil moisture outside the limits set by LLWR. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de mesa agitadora reciprocante de baixa rotação na dispersão mecânica de amostras de solos de diferentes classes texturais. Foram realizadas análises granulométricas em 61 amostras com quatro repetições, empregando o método da pipeta para determinação da fração argila e tamisagem para determinação das frações areia grossa, areia fina e areia total, sendo o silte determinado por diferença. Na avaliação de desempenho, os resultados obtidos com uso da mesa agitadora reciprocante (MAR) foram comparados com dados disponíveis para as mesmas amostras oriundos de relatórios do Ensaio de Proficiência IAC para Laboratórios de Análises de Solos - Prolab/IAC. Análises de acurácia foram realizadas com base nos valores dos intervalos de confiança definidos para cada fração granulométrica componente de cada amostra ensaiada. Indicadores gráficos também foram utilizados na comparação de dados, por meio de dispersão e ajuste linear. A estatística descritiva indicou preponderância de baixa variabilidade em mais de 90 % dos resultados obtidos para as amostras de texturas arenosa, média e argilosa e em 68 % dos obtidos para as amostras de textura muito argilosa, indicando boa repetibilidade dos resultados obtidos com a MAR. Média variabilidade foi mais frequentemente associada à fração silte, seguida da fração areia fina. Os resultados das análises de sensibilidade indicam acurácia de 100 % nas três frações granulométricas - areia total, silte e argila - para todas as amostras analisadas pertencentes às classes texturais muito argilosa, argilosa e média. Para as nove amostras de textura arenosa, a acurácia média foi de 85,2 %, e os maiores desvios ocorreram em relação à fração silte. Nas aproximações lineares, coeficientes de correlação igual (silte) ou superiores (areia total e argila) a 0,93, bem como diferenças menores do que 0,16 entre os coeficientes angulares das retas e o valor unitário, indicam alta correlação entre os resultados de referência (Prolab/IAC) e os obtidos nos ensaios com a MAR. Conclui-se pelo desempenho satisfatório da mesa agitadora reciprocante de baixa rotação para dispersão mecânica de amostras de solo de diferentes classes texturais para fins de análise granulométrica, permitindo recomendar o uso alternativo do equipamento quando se emprega agitação lenta. As vantagens do uso do equipamento nacional incluem o baixo custo, a possibilidade de análise simultânea de grande número de amostras e o uso de frascos comuns, de vidro ou de plástico, baratos e de fácil reposição. The dispersion of the samples in soil particle-size analysis is a fundamental step, which is commonly achieved with a combination of chemical agents and mechanical agitation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a low-speed reciprocal shaker for the mechanical dispersion of soil samples of different textural classes. The particle size of 61 soil samples was analyzed in four replications, using the pipette method to determine the clay fraction and sieving to determine coarse, fine and total sand fractions. The silt content was obtained by difference. To evaluate the performance, the results of the reciprocal shaker (RSh) were compared with data of the same soil samples available in reports of the Proficiency testing for Soil Analysis Laboratories of the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (Prolab/IAC). The accuracy was analyzed based on the maximum and minimum values defining the confidence intervals for the particle-size fractions of each soil sample. Graphical indicators were also used for data comparison, based on dispersion and linear adjustment. The descriptive statistics indicated predominantly low variability in more than 90 % of the results for sand, medium-textured and clay samples, and for 68 % of the results for heavy clay samples, indicating satisfactory repeatability of measurements with the RSh. Medium variability was frequently associated with silt, followed by the fine sand fraction. The sensitivity analyses indicated an accuracy of 100 % for the three main separates (total sand, silt and clay), in all 52 samples of the textural classes heavy clay, clay and medium. For the nine sand soil samples, the average accuracy was 85.2 %; highest deviations were observed for the silt fraction. In relation to the linear adjustments, the correlation coefficients of 0.93 (silt) or > 0.93 (total sand and clay), as well as the differences between the angular coefficients and the unit < 0.16, indicated a high correlation between the reference data (Prolab/IAC) and results obtained with the RSh. In conclusion, the mechanical dispersion by the reciprocal shaker of soil samples of different textural classes was satisfactory. The results allowed recommending the use of the equipment at low agitation for particle size- analysis. The advantages of this Brazilian apparatus are its low cost, the possibility to simultaneously analyze a great number of samples using ordinary, easily replaceable glass or plastic bottles. The Visual Evaluation of Soil Structure (VESS) is a relatively simple methodology used for comparing management systems and for maintaining or recovering the quality of agricultural soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the structural soil quality in the production of sugarcane using VESS. Three treatments were established: Deep Strip-till (DST), Conventional Tillage (CT) and Uncultivated area (UC). For DST and CT soil samples were taken from two locations: in-row and inter-row. Soil blocks were extracted from mini-trenches and carefully fragmented into aggregates, whose appearance, resistance, and characteristics of the structural units define quality scores. The density of visible roots was quantified by a grid-based counting method. DST at in-row location had improved the structural quality of the soil, providing greater root growth. Scores of visual soil quality in CT showed no difference between in-row and inter-row locations. Preserved from machinery traffic the in-row trail in CT did not result in benefit to soil quality. Variability in the scores among the replicate blocks for DST in-row suggests that the equipment had produced irregular soil tillage. VESS proved to be a good indicator from which it is feasible to evaluate impacts of agricultural machines and tillage implements on soil quality.

Funcoes de pedotransferencia (FPTs) sao modelos que permitem estimar edaficos nao mensuraveis diretamente a partir de outros atributos de mais facil determinacao. Este trabalho teve por objetivo geral estimar os parâmetros de entrada e ajustar curvas de retencao de agua para um LATOSSOLO VERMELHO Distferrico tipico empregando FPTs. As variaveis de entrada das FPTs incluiram parâmetros granulometricos, carbono orgânico e agua retida no solo a 33kPa. Nas avaliacoes de desempenho dos modelos empregaram-se diferentes indices estatisticos. De acordo com o indice de confianca "c", as FPTs tiveram desempenhos ruins nas estimativas de teores volumetricos de agua retidos no solo em diferentes potenciais matricos. Quanto as distribuicoes de poros, as estimativas obtidas a partir de FPTs subestimaram os macro e mesoporos e superestimaram os ultramicroporos, sendo que os menores desvios foram observados para as classes de micro e de criptoporos. Os resultados obtidos para as aplicacoes avaliadas nao permitem recomendar o uso dessas FPTs para o LATOSSOLO em questao. Por outro lado, o indice de confianca "c" trouxe informacoes adicionais relevantes na avaliacao de desempenho realizada, em comparacao informacao isolada obtida somente por meio do coeficiente de correlacao "r" ou do indice de concordância "d". Knowledge of soils in the Amazon rainforest is becoming increasingly essential due to dynamics adopted by farmers that substitute forest for pastures, together with growing pressure from diverse segments of society towards adoption of sustainable production systems. The objective of this study was to characterize the soils along two toposequences, one under forest (F) and the other under pasture (P), and to verify how the change in land use influences soil attributes, evaluating their inclusion in the Brazilian Soil Classification System (SiBCS). The soils were sampled in pits located at the summit, backslope and footslope positions for morphological, chemical, physical, and clay mineralogy analysis. The results show that the soils are chemically poor and predominately kaolinitic. Sandy and loamy sand soils are in the surface horizons, with an increase in clay content with depth. The highest values of bulk density and lowest values of macroporosity were observed in the Bt horizons due to the change from a granular structure in the surface to an angular and subangular blocky structure in these horizons. The morphological properties observed in the field are strongly influenced by the annual soil water dynamics, the parent material, and the landscape, representing diagnostic characteristics that influenced classification of the soils, such as aquic with episaturation (epirredóxico), saprolitic, and gravelly. These diagnostic characteristics in the Argissolo Amarelo (Hapludults) are important morphological properties that have not been highlighted by the current edition of the SiBCS.

In evaluation of soil quality for agricultural use, soil structure is one of the most important properties, which is influenced not only by climate, biological activity, and management practices but also by mechanical and physico-chemical forces acting in the soil. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of conventional agricultural management on the structure and microstructure of a Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico típico (Rhodic Hapludox) in an experimental area planted to maize. Soil morphology was described using the crop profile method by identifying the distinct structural volumes called Morphologically Homogeneous Units (MHUs). For comparison, we also described a profile in an adjacent area without agricultural use and under natural regrowth referred to as Memory. We took undisturbed samples from the main MHUs so as to form thin sections and blocks of soil for micromorphological and micromorphometrical analyses. Results from the application of the crop profile method showed the occurrence of the following structural types: loose (L), fragmented (F) and continuous (C) in both profiles analyzed. In the Memory soil profile, the fragmented structures were classified as Fptμ∆+tf and Fmt∆μ, whose micromorphology shows an enaulic-porphyric (porous) relative distribution with a great deal of biological activity as indicated by the presence of vughs and channels. Lower down, from 0.20 to 0.35 m, there was a continuous soil volume (sub-type C∆μ), with a subangular block microstructure and an enaulic-porphyric relative distribution, though in this case more compact and with aggregate coalescence and less biological activity. The micromorphometrical study of the soil of the Memory Plot showed the predominance of complex pores in NAM (15.03 %), Fmt∆μ (11.72 %), and Fptμ∆+tf (7.73 %), and rounded pores in C∆μ (8.21 %). In the soil under conventional agricultural management, we observed fragmented structures similar to the Memory Plot from 0.02 to 0.20 m, followed by a volume with a compact continuous structure (C∆μ), without visible porosity and with few roots. In the MHUs under conventional management, reduction in the packing pores (40 %) was observed, mainly in the continuous units (C). The microstructure had well-defined blocks, with the occurrence of planar pores and less evidence of biological activity. In conclusion, the morphological and micromorphological analyses of the soil profiles studied offered complementary information regarding soil structural quality, especially concerning the changes in pore types as result of mechanical stress undergone by the soil. Na avaliação da qualidade do solo para uso agrícola, a estrutura é um dos seus atributos mais importantes, sendo não somente influenciada pelo clima, pela atividade biológica e pelas práticas de manejo, como também por forças de natureza mecânica e físico-químicas atuantes no solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do manejo agrícola convencional na estrutura e microestrutura de um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico típico de área experimental cultivada com milho. A morfologia do solo foi descrita conforme o método do perfil cultural, identificando-se as diferentes Unidades Morfologicamente Homogêneas (UMHs). Para fins de comparação, também foi descrito um perfil em área sem uso agrícola e sob revegetação natural referida por parcela Memória. Foram extraídas amostras indeformadas das principais UMHs visando a confecção de lâminas delgadas e blocos de solo destinados às análises micromorfológicas e micromorfométricas. Os resultados revelaram a ocorrência de estruturas dos tipos livre (L), fragmentada (F) e contínua (C) em ambos perfis avaliados. No perfil da parcela Memória, as estruturas fragmentadas são as dos subtipos Fptμ∆+tf e Fmt∆μ, cuja micromorfologia mostrou uma distribuição relativa enáulica-porfírica (porosa), com grande atividade biológica evidenciada pela presença de cavidades e canais. Mais abaixo, entre 0,20 e 0,35 m, o volume de solo é contínuo do subtipo C∆μ, apresentando microestrutura em blocos subangulares e matriz com distribuição relativa enáulica-porfírica, porém mais compacta e com coalescência de agregados e menor incidência de atividade biológica. O estudo micromorfométrico do solo da parcela Memória revelou predomínio de poros complexos nas unidades NAM (15,03 %), Fmt∆μ (11,72 %) e Fptμ∆+tf (7,73 %) e de poros arredondados na unidade C∆μ (8,21 %). No solo sob manejo agrícola, observaram-se estruturas fragmentadas similares às da parcela Memória entre 0,02 e 0,20 m seguidas de um volume contínua compacta (C∆μ), sem porosidade visível a olho nu e com pouquíssimas raízes. Nas UMHs sob manejo convencional, observou-se redução da porosidade de empilhamento (40 %), principalmente nas unidades contínuas (C), com surgimento de formas fissuradas e menor evidencia de atividade biológica. Concluindo, as análises morfológicas e micromorfológica dos perfis de solo estudados forneceram informações complementares acerca da qualidade estrutural do solo, em especial quanto às alterações dos tipos de poros decorrentes de estresse mecânico sofrido pelo solo.

O manejo agrícola interfere nas condições físicas, químicas e biológicas do solo, na capacidade produtiva do sistema agrícola e na susceptibilidade do solo ao processo erosivo, não raramente acentuando-a. Objetivou-se, neste estudo, estudar a influência de dois sistemas de manejo sobre a qualidade física de um Latossolo Vermelho Distroférrico típico da região de Campinas, SP, bem como seus efeitos tanto no desenvolvimento e produtividade da cultura do milho, quanto no controle das perdas de terra e de nutrientes por erosão. Foram comparados dois sistemas de manejo, sistema plantio direto (SPD) e sistema convencional com grade aradora (SC), aplicando-os em parcelas experimentais dotadas com sistemas coletores de enxurrada para avaliação das perdas de terra e de nutrientes por erosão. Também foram analisados atributos físicos e químicos do solo, bem como dados biométricos e de produtividade da cultura do milho. Os resultados evidenciam que o manejo agrícola influenciou a qualidade do solo, sendo que os indicadores físicos foram melhores no sistema convencional. No entanto, os indicadores biométricos, em especial altura de plantas, foram superiores no sistema plantio direto. Também houve influência do manejo sobre o controle da erosão, ocorrendo maiores perdas de solo e de nutrientes, em particular, de fósforo e de matéria orgânica nas parcelas sob SC. Agricultural management influences the physical, chemical and biological conditions of the soil, affecting soil quality, the productivity capacity of the agricultural system and its vulnerability to erosion process, frequently increasing it. The purpose of this work was to study the influence of two agricultural management systems on physical soil quality of a Rhodic Hapludox occurring in Campinas, State of São Paulo, and their effects not only on corn crop development and yield, but also on soil and nutrient loss by erosion. Two management systems were compared, named direct drilling system (DDS) and conventional system (CS), by applying them in experimental plots having runoff collectors to assess soil and nutrient losses by erosion. Soil physical and chemical attributes were also analyzed, as well as biometrical and yield data of the corn crop. The results indicate that agricultural management has differently influenced soil quality, and that soil physical indicators were better under the conventional system (CS). However, biometrical indicators, especially plant height, were superior under direct drilling system (DDS). There was also influence of agricultural management on erosion control, occurring greater soil losses and particularly larger phosphorous and organic matter losses from plots under conventional system (CS).

O monitorament o da qualidade estrutural do solo pode ser realizado empregando atributos físicos selecionados e tomando por base um indicador de qualidade. O intervalo hídrico ótimo (IHO) é um indicador que integra os atributos físicos do solo que influenciam diretamente sua qualidade física, em especial no que concerne ao crescimento das culturas. Neste trabalho, foi desenvolvida uma aplicação do conceito do IHO, como uma ferramenta de planejamento do uso agrícola, de maneira a permitir comparações entre sistemas agrícolas. O objetivo geral do trabalho foi o de quantificar o IHO para o Latossolo Vermelho Distroférrico típico da região de Campinas-SP (Unidade de Mapeamento Barão Geraldo), aplicando-o na avaliação de diferentes sistemas de manejo agrícola. A pesquisa foi conduzida no Campo Experimental da Faculdade de Engenharia Agrícola da UNICAMP, em Campinas (SP), em parcelas experimentais cultivadas com milho e feijão sob Sistema Plantio Direto (SPD) e Sistema Convencional com Grade aradora (SC). Para determinação do IHO do solo, a curva de retenção de água (CRA), a curva de resistência do solo à penetração (RP) e a densidade do solo (Ds) foram determinadas para duas camadas, 0-0,20 m e 0,20-0,40 m. O monitoramento da qualidade física do solo foi efetuado com base em dados de densidade do solo, produtividade da cultura e indicadores biométricos do milho de três safras agrícolas consecutivas (2003/04; 2004/05; 2005/06). Na safra 2004/2005, também foram consideradas a densidade do solo, a umidade volumétrica e a produtividade da cultura de feijão, irrigado e não irrigado. Os resultados evidenciam que na camada 0,0-0,20 m, a umidade na capacidade de campo(ØCC) determinou o limite superior do IHO e a umidade no ponto de murcha permanente (ØPMP) o limite inferior até a Ds de 1,2 kg dm-3, quando então a umidade onde a resistência do solo à penetração atinge 2 Mpa (ØRP) é que passou a definir o limite inferior. Na camada 0,20-0,40 m, o limite inferior do IHO foi determinado pela ØRP em toda faixa de variação da Ds, sendo que a umidade a partir da qual a porosidade de aeração é inferior a 0,10 m3m-3 (ØPA) e a ØPMP não limitaram o valor do IHO. Os resultados indicam pior qualidade estrutural do solo em subsuperfície (0,20-0,40m). O monitoramento da cultura do milho indicou melhoria da qualidade física do solo sob SPD, a partir do segundo ano agrícola em relação ao solo sob SC, nas duas camadas estudadas. Os indicadores biométricos da cultura permitiram diferenciar os tratamentos desde o primeiro ano do ensaio, mostrando-se mais sensíveis às variações da qualidade física do solo. Para o feijoeiro o período em que o solo permaneceu fora das condições ideais de umidade estabelecidas pelo IHO foi suficiente para afetar diferencialmente a produtividade da cultura nos tratamentos não irrigados, com vantagem para o SPD. Conclui-se que o IHO, determinado para uma dada classe taxonômica de solo, constitui-se um indicador aplicável na avaliação da qualidade estrutural desse solo quando submetido a diferentes sistemas de manejo. O IHO pode ser utilizado no monitoramento da qualidade física do solo em sistemas agrícolas auxiliando na definição da necessidade de intervenção. A determinação do IHO para duas camadas permitiu maior compreensão dos efeitos do manejo agrícola na qualidade física do solo e na produtividade dos sistemas Abstract: Agricultural management intended for field crop production affects physical soil quality. The monitoring of soil structural quality can be achieved using selected physical attributes and a quality indicator. The least limiting water range (LLWR) is an indicator that connects the physical soil attributes, which have influence on its physical quality especially for crop growth. In this work, it was developed an application of the LLWR concept as a tool for agricultural use planning, in order to making comparisons between agricultural systems. The central goal was to quantify the LLWR of the Red Latosol (Typic Hapludult) (Barão Geraldo Soil Mapping Unit) and to apply it on evaluation of different agricultural management systems. The research was conducted at the Experimental Station of the Agricultural Engineering College of UNICAMP in Campinas (SP), in experimental plots cultivated with maize under direct-drilling system (DDS) and conventional system with heavy harrow (CS) systems. For the LLWR determination, the soil water retention curve (WRC), the soil strength curve (SSC), and bulk density (Dd), were determined in two layers, 0-0,2m and 0,2-0,4m. The monitoring of soil physical quality was made using: bulk density data, maize productivities, and biometric indicators of maize from three consecutive production cycles (2003/04; 2004/05; 2005/06). The production cycle 2004/05, t they were also considered the bulk density data, volumetric soil water content and bean productivity data, with and without irrigation. At the layer 0,0-0,2m, the results show that soil water content at field capacity (ØCC) and soil water content at the wilting point (ØPMP) have determined respectively the superior and inferior limits of LLWR until the Ds=1,2 kg m-3, when soil water content at which the penetration resistance is 2 MPa (ØRP) has determined the inferior limit of LLWR. At the layer 0,2-0,4m, the inferior limit of LLWR was defined by the ØRP along the entire range of variation of bulk density, the water content when air-filled porosity 10% (ØPA) and ØPMP didn¿t reduce the LLWR. The results indicate that soil structural quality is worse at deeper layer (0,2-0,4m). The monitoring of crop maize shows improvement of soil physical quality under DDS, since the second production cycle in comparison with the CS in both layers. The biometric indicators of maize made possible the distinction between treatments since the first cycle of production; this suggests that they are more susceptible to the variations of physical soil quality than the productivity. The results acquired from the monitoring of winter crop (bean) indicate that the time, which the soil remained outside of the ideal conditions of humidity of the LLWR, was sufficient to affect adversely the productivity in the no-irrigated treatments, with advantage for the DDS. In conclusion, the LLWR determined for a given soil taxonomic class is an indicator to structural quality evaluation of the soil under distinct management systems. And, the LLWR can be used in the monitoring of soil physical quality to define the need for intervention. Nessa área foram feitas avaliações na cultivar Baixinho de Santa Amália, contando-se o número de plantas com sintomas de ataque recente, para o ácaro branco Polyphagotarsonemus latus, com sintomas e presença de ácaros, para o ácaro rajado Tetranychus urticae e com presença de adultos ou ninfas nas folhas, no caso das moscas-brancas Trialeurodes sp., Bemisia tabaci biótipo B e uma terceira espécie não identificada. Para moscas-brancas, também foram realizadas contagens de ninfas e exúvias em laboratório. O cultivo em ambiente protegido favoreceu a sobrevivência e o desenvolvimento populacional das espécies estudadas, sendo que algumas possíveis causas são discutidas no texto. Considerando-se que o cultivo protegido pode ser uma boa alternativa para o controle de viroses, como o mosaico do mamoeiro, problema limitante para a cultura, estratégias de manejo de pragas nesses ambientes devem ser desenvolvidas, para viabilizar o seu uso. It was measured the effect of cultivating papaya cultivar Baixinho de Santa Amália in a protected environment and in three situations: without shade, and under screen shades of white polyethylene mesh sizes 2 x 2 mm or 2 x 1 mm. It was registered the number of plants with symptoms of recent attacks of the broad mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus), symptoms and presence of the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) and the presence on leaves of adults or nymphs of whiteflies (Trialeurodes sp., Bemisia tabaci biotype B and a third unidentified species). Whitefly nymph and exuviae numbers were also counted in the laboratory. Cultivation in a protected environment favored the survival and development of the species under study, and some possible reasons for these are discussed along the text. Since cultivating papaya in protected environment can be a good alternative for papaya ringspot virus control, which is a restrictive factor for the crop, the development of strategies to control the pests in this condition is necessary for correct recommendation of such measure. O aumento populacional e a iminência das consequências das mudanças climáticas trazem a necessidade de novas estratégias de produção agropecuária que permitam suprir a crescente demanda de alimentos com o menor impacto ambiental possível. A integração pecuária-floresta e a intensificação de pastagens são estratégias promissoras que permitem o aumento da produção, porém os impactos na qualidade do solo desses manejos devem ser avaliados. Dessa forma, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade física do solo em cinco sistemas de manejo de pastagem e uma área de vegetação nativa (NV). Os sistemas avaliados foram: integração pecuária-floresta com espécies de árvores nativas (ILF); pastagem degradada (DP); pastagem irrigada com alta taxa de lotação (IHS); pastagem em sequeiro com alta taxa de lotação (RHS) e pastagem em sequeiro com moderada taxa de lotação (RMS). Os seguintes indicadores físicos de qualidade do solo foram avaliados nas profundidades de 0 a 10, 10 a 20 e 20 a 30 cm: densidade do solo (BD), macroporosidade (MAC), microporosidade (MIC), porosidade total (TP), condutividade hidráulica saturada (Ksat), resistência à penetração (RP), diâmetro médio ponderado de agregados via seca (DRY-MWD) e via úmida (WET-MWD). Adicionalmente, um índice de qualidade física do solo (SPQI) foi calculado baseado em três funções do solo: suporte ao desenvolvimento radicular, disponibilização de água para plantas e fauna edáfica, troca de gases entre solo e atmosfera. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste não-paramétrico de Mann-Whitney (p < 0,05) e análise multivariada de componentes principais (PCA). O aumento da intensificação de pastagens representado pelo aumento da taxa de lotação demonstrou uma maior degradação dos atributos físicos dos solos analisados, o que pode estar associado à espécie cultivada na área (Megathyrsus maximum), que forma touceiras e cria áreas de solo desprotegidas e mais suscetíveis ao pisoteio do gado. O consórcio de M. maximum com aveia (Avena bysantina) e azevém (Lolium multiflorum) no outono parece ajudar na manutenção da qualidade física do solo no sistema IHS. A presença de árvores no sistema ILF demonstrou afetar positivamente a qualidade do solo, analisada por meio dos indicadores, do SPQI e da PCA, pois se aproximou mais da área de referência do que o sistema RMS, com o qual compartilha semelhantes taxas de lotação, tempo de pastejo e descanso, espécie de forrageira e adubação nitrogenada. Population growth and the imminent consequences of climate change bring the need for new agricultural production strategies that allow meeting the growing demand for food with the least possible environmental impact. Livestock-forest integration and pasture intensification are promising strategies that allow production increase, but the impacts of these managements on soil quality must be evaluated. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the soil physical quality in five pasture management systems and an area of native vegetation (NV). The systems evaluated were: livestock-forest integrated system with native tree species (ILF); degraded pasture (PD); irrigated pasture with high stocking rate (IHS); rainfed pasture with high stocking rate (RHS) and rainfed pasture with moderate stocking rate (RMS). The following physical indicators of soil quality were evaluated at depths from 0 to 10, 10 to 20 and 20 to 30 cm: soil bulk density (BD), macroporosity (MAC), microporosity (MIC), total porosity (TP), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), resistance to penetration (RP) and aggregates mean weight diameter by dry (DRY-MWD) and wet (WET-MWD) methods. Additionally, a soil physical quality index (SPQI) was calculated based on three soil functions: support root growth, supply water for plants and edaphic fauna, allow gas exchange between soil and atmosphere. Data were submitted to the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test (p < 0.05) and principal component analysis (PCA). Pasture intensification represented by the increase in stocking rate demonstrated a greater degradation of soil physical attributes, which may be associated with the species cultivated in the area (Megathyrsus maximum), which forms tussocks and creates areas of unprotected soil that are more susceptible to cattle trampling. Consortium of M. maximum with oat (Avena bysantina) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) in autumn seems to help maintain the soil physical quality in the IHS system. The presence of trees in the ILF system showed to positively affect soil quality, analyzed through soil quality indicators, SPQI and PCA, as it was closer to the reference area (NV) than the RMS system, with which it shares similar stocking rates, grazing and resting time, forage species and nitrogen fertilization.

Os ecossistemas florestais têm sido reconhecidos como uma importante forma de mitigação da degradação do solo e dos recursos hídricos. Existe grande expectativa de que as florestas secundárias provenientes das ações de restauração florestal possam prover serviços importantes, tais como: a manutenção da qualidade e quantidade de água, manutenção da biodiversidade, regulação do clima através do sequestro de carbono, provisão de produtos como fibras e madeira, serviços culturais, dentre outros. Neste contexto, a regeneração passiva ganha grande destaque devido ao baixo custo, já que aproveita a resiliência das áreas anteriormente degradadas e pela viabilidade em grande áreas geográficas e/ou de difícil acesso. Apesar de sua grande importância, existem poucos estudos conclusivos sobre restabelecimento dos atributos físico-hídricos do solo nestas áreas ao longo dos anos. Portanto, as ações para restaurar os ecossistemas florestais, devem buscar compreender também se ocorrem melhorias na estrutura do solo ao longo da restauração, já que a recuperação de áreas degradadas por meio das florestas, depende também de solos fisicamente estruturados. Avaliar a qualidade física do solo é fundamental para compreender a variação espacial e temporal sofrida pela estrutura do solo nestas áreas. Tais informações possuem grande utilidade para o norteamento do manejo dos recursos naturais. Forest ecosystems have been recognized as an important way of mitigating the degradation of soil and water resources. There is a great expectation that secondary forests from forest restoration actions may provide important services, such as: maintaining the quality and quantity of water, maintaining biodiversity, regulating the climate through carbon sequestration, providing products such as fibers and cultural services, among others. In this context, natural regeneration gains great prominence due to its low cost, since it takes advantage of the resilience of previously degraded areas and the viability in large geographic and / or difficult to access areas. Despite its great importance, there are few conclusive studies on the restoration of soil physical-hydric attributes in these areas over the years. Therefore, actions to restore forest ecosystems should also seek to understand whether improvements in soil structure occur throughout the restoration, since the recovery of degraded areas through forests also depends on physically structured soils. Evaluating the physical quality of the soil is fundamental to understand the spatial and temporal variation suffered by the soil structure in these areas. Such information is very useful for guiding the management of natural resources.

A heterogeneidade dos solos representa um grande desafio à evolução da modelagem dos processos que regem a dinâmica da água no solo. Uma ferramenta imprescindível ao modelar o fluxo hídrico no solo é a curva de retenção da água no solo (CRA). A CRA é uma referência primária para qualquer modelagem de água em meios porosos, e, em ciências do solo é utilizada como referência em diversas escalas, desde manejo da irrigação de culturas até simulações que permitam desenvolver políticas ambientais. Os métodos convencionalmente empregados para determinar a CRA demandam muito tempo e esforço em laboratório, o que dificulta a popularização de sua utilização. Uma técnica que vêm sendo empregada frequentemente para caracterizar fluxos em meios porosos é a ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN) em baixo campo, em que através de pulsos eletromagnéticos na frequência de rádio, pode- se obter informações acerca dos poros no qual um fluido saturante está retido. Em petrologia, tem sido frequentemente empregada em rochas, para previsão de informações como a abundância, o tamanho dos poros em que o petróleo está retido, bem como a condutividade hidráulica das rochas. Em solos, o uso da RMN para caracterizar processos físico-hídricos ainda é incipiente. Na última década, com avanços ocorridos na instrumentação, bem como nas técnicas para aquisição dos sinais houve uma intensificação dos estudos associados à previsão de fluxo hídrico da água no solo. A principal técnica empregada para aquisição de dados é a relaxometria, em que os núcleos de 1H, após serem excitados por ondas na frequência de rádio realizam um movimento chamado \"precessão\", que é o retorno da magnetização em direção ao campo magnético estático. Esse fenômeno pode ser associado à geometria porosa em que o fluido saturante está inserido, pois a precessão é acelerada conforme as moléculas colidem com as paredes dos poros através do movimento Browniano das moléculas. Todavia, o tempo de relaxação dos spins é também dependente da composição das paredes dos poros onde a presença de elementos ferromagnéticos pode acelerar o processo de relaxação tornando a estimativa da geometria porosa dependente de duas variáveis. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a curva de retenção da água no solo à partir de um método conhecido em RMN como DDIF (Decay Due to Internal Fields), em que o decaimento do sinal medido passa a ser associado apenas à geometria do espaço poroso, não sofrendo influência da composição dos mesmos. Foi possível determinar, com alto grau de detalhamento a distribuição de tamanhos de poros nas amostras do Neossolo Quartzarênico e ainda associar esta distribuição à curva de retenção da água no solo. The heterogeneity of soils represents a major challenge to the evolution of the modeling of the processes that govern the dynamics of water in the soil. An essential tool when modeling soil water flow is the soil water retention curve (WRC). The WRC is a primary reference for any modeling of water movement in porous media, and in soil sciences can be used as a reference in various scales, from crop irrigation management to simulations that alow the development of environmental policies. The methods conventionally employed to determine CRA require a lot of time and effort in the laboratory, which makes it difficult to popularize its use. A technique that has been used frequently to characterize flows in porous media is low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), in which through electromagnetic pulses in the radio frequency, information can be obtained about the pores in which a saturating fluid is withheld. In petrology, it has often been used in rocks, for predicting information such as abundance, the size of the pores in which the oil is retained, as well as the hydraulic conductivity of these pores. In soils, the use of NMR to characterize physical-water processes is still incipient. In the last decade, with advances in instrumentation, as well as in techniques for signal acquisition, there has been an intensification of studies associated with the prediction of water flow in the soil. The main technique used for data acquisition is relaxometry, in which the H1 nuclei, after being excited by waves at the radio frequency, perform a movement called \"precession\", which is the return of magnetization to the condition prior to the pulse. This phenomenon can be associated with the porous geometry in which the saturating fluid is inserted, since the precession is accelerated as the molecules collide with the pore walls through the Brownian movement of the molecules. However, the relaxation time of the spins is also dependent on the composition of the pore walls where the presence of ferromagnetic elements can accelerate the relaxation process making the estimation of the porous geometry dependent on two variables. The objective of this work was to estimate the soil water retention curve using a method known in NMR as DDIF (Decay Due to Internal Fields), in which the measured signal decay becomes associated only with the geometry of the porous space, not being influenced by their composition. It was possible to determine, with a high degree of detail, the distribution of pore sizes in samples of Quartzene Neossol and also associate this distribution with the soil water retention curve.

Os solos utilizados na agricultura sofrem, invariavelmente, modificações de suas propriedades originais pelo seu manejo. O sistema de plantio direto, PD, é indicado com o intuito de proteger o solo, promovendo uma melhora dos atributos físicos, químicos e biológicos do solo. Porém, alguns solos sob PD apresentam maior densidade devido ao seu não revolvimento. Diante deste panorama, objetivou-se avaliar, pelo estudo da curva de retenção da água no solo (CRA), algumas propriedades fisico-hídricas do solo, buscando subsídios para entender como a utilização do PD por longo período de tempo pode influenciar o comportamento da água, no que diz respeito a sua retenção e condução em um Latossolo brasileiro, em comparação ao plantio convencional, PC. O Latossolo da área deste estudo vem sendo cultivado sob PD há cerca de 12 anos com rotação de diferentes culturas agrícolas de inverno e verão. O delineamento experimental possui três blocos casualizados com parcelas subdivididas, sendo o fator da parcela o manejo do solo (Plantio Direto - PD e Preparo Convencional - PC) e o fator da subparcela três tipos de cobertura do solo (Gramínea, Leguminosa e sem cobertura - Pousio) para as camadas de solo 0-0,5m; 0,5-0,10m; 0,10-0,20m e 0,20-0,30m de profundidade. Foram realizadas caracterização textural e análises para Carbono Total (C), Resistência a Penetração (RP), Argila Pontamente e Mecanicamente Dispersa em Água (APDA e AMDA), além da determinação das CRA\'s que foram utilizadas para avaliar a distribuição do tamanho de poros do solo, e aplicar o modelo de van Genutchen de estimativa da condutividade hidráulica relativa (Kr). Pelos resultados pode-se concluir que as CRA\'s indicaram um maior intervalo de água disponível para a cobertura gramínea, mas na comparação entre PD e PC este índice foi maior no PC. Soils used in agriculture invariably undergo changes in their original properties due to the management practices. The no-tillage management, PD, is used to protect the soil, promoting improvement in the physical, chemical and biological soil attributes. However, there are soils under PD that have a higher bulk density due to the no plowing operations. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate from the soil water retention curves (CRA) determination, some soil physical-hydric properties, seeking subsidies to understand how the use of PD for a long period can influence the water behavior, with respect to its retention and conduction in a Oxisol, compared to conventional management, PC. The Oxisol in the area of this study has been cultivated under PD for about 12 years with rotation of different winter-summer crops. The experimental design has three randomized blocks with subdivided plots, the plot factor being soil management (no-tillage - PD and conventional tillage - PC) and the subplot factor, the three types of cover crops (Grass, Leguminous and without cover - Fallow), to the depths of 0-0.5m; 0.5-0.10m; 0.10-0.20m; 0.20-0.30m. Textural characterization and analyzes were carried out for Total Carbon (C), Penetration Resistance (RP), Readly and Mechanically Dispersible Clay in Water (APDA and AMDA), in addition to the determination of the CRA\'s which was used to evaluate the pore size distribution, and to apply the van Genutchen model, relative hydraulic conductivity (Kr) of stimation. From the results it can be concluded that PC retention curves indicated greater water retention by the soil whose most relevant factor was the type of cover crop used.

A micromorfologia é a ciência que permite estudar o solo e seus componentes em amostras indeformadas em uma escala microscópica permitindo identificar feições relacionados a sua formação e processos atuantes que podem ser aplicadas em estudos de gênese, física, mineralogia, microbiologia do solo, entre outros. Para que isso seja possível é necessário formar um material rígido o suficiente para ser laminado a partir de amostras indeformadas de solo, através do processo de impregnação de solo. No entanto, para esse procedimento são utilizados atualmente, resinas plásticas (e.g. poliéster e epóxi), e dentre elas a resina poliéster, pode ser consideradas tóxica à saúde humana devido a presença do monômero de estireno na composição, além disso há o risco de danos ao meio ambiente devido a produção de resíduos oriundos de materiais tóxicos. No Brasil, por exemplo, há poucos laboratórios que realizam o processo de impregnação de amostras de solos para análises micromorfológicas, provavelmente, devido a toxicidade dos reagentes. Diante da importância da técnica para a Ciência do Solo, torna-se fundamental buscar alternativas para a técnica de micromorfologia do solo, que sejam economicamente viáveis, e que assegurem a segurança de atividades que envolvam substâncias e produtos químicos, visando garantir a proteção da saúde, da vida e das condições normais do ambiente, contribuindo para um desenvolvimento sustentável sem comprometer a qualidade do produto final. Assim, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo eliminar ou substituir a utilização do monômero de estireno no processo de impregnação de solos por substâncias similares menos tóxicas ao manuseio e avaliar o uso de soluções de resina poliéster e soluções de resina epóxi com diferentes diluentes (estireno, acetona e álcool) no processo de impregnação de amostras de solo (argiloso, textura média e arenoso). Para isso, foram utilizadas 2 tipos de resinas: resina poliéster Arazyn 1.0#00, resina poliéster Arazyn 1.0#0.8 e resina Epóxi Epoxiglass 1504; e diferentes solventes, sendo estes: o monômero de estireno, acetona P.A e álcool etílico absoluto (99,5%). Os tratamentos foram avaliados tanto para confecção de blocos quanto na fabricação de lâminas delgadas. Além disso, avaliação da qualidade da impregnação na confecção dos blocos de solo foi feita a partir dos parâmetros: odor, cor, volume de material gasto, solubilidade do pigmento, polimerização e secagem, corte, número de reimpregnações e custos dos reagentes. Também foi verificado na qualidade final do produto, a quantidade de poros não impregnados e uma avaliação qualitativa das lâminas. Verificou-se que a resina poliéster arazyn 1.0#08 tendo a acetona como solvente apresentou resultados satisfatórios na impregnação de solos, na confecção de blocos polidos e lâminas delgadas, para ambos os tipos de solo estudados. Porém, não foi capaz de substituir totalmente o estireno, contudo promove uma redução significativa do uso do estireno devido a possibilidade de substituição por acetona. Por outro lado, o tratamento com resina epóxi apresenta grande limitação da qualidade das lâminas delgadas não sendo obtidos resultados satisfatórios no produto final. No entanto, pode ser considerado uma alternativa para trabalhos que analisam apenas blocos polidos, uma vez que apresentou resultados positivos, em todas as texturas de solo que foram impregnadas. Micromorphology uses optical microscopy and associated techniques to study soil\'s components at the microscopic scale for undisturbed samples. This technique allows identification of features related to soil processes and formation that can be applied to soil\'s genesis, physics, mineralogy, microbiology, among others. To perform these analysis, it is commonly used rigid materials to produce thin sections from undisturbed soil samples by the soil impregnation process. However, the plastic resins (e.g., polyester resin) containing the styrene monomer is considered toxic for human health. In addition, the wastes production from toxic materials may pose environmental risks. In Brazil, for instance, there are few laboratories performing the impregnation process of soil samples for micromorphological analysis, probably because of the reagents toxicity. Thus, given the importance of micromorphology for Soil Science, it is critical to seek other alternatives for soil micromorphology analysis. These alternatives must be economically feasible, chemically safe, non-hazardous for human health, attending environmental compliances, and contributing to sustainable development without compromising the product quality. Consequently, our work aimed to eliminate or replace the use of styrene monomer in the soil impregnation process by similar substances less toxic to the handling and evaluate the use of polyester resin solutions and epoxy resin solutions with different diluents (styrene, acetone and alcohol) in the impregnation process of soil samples (clayey, medium and sandy texture). We conducted an investigation using two resins, as follows: Arazyn 1.0 # 00 polyester resin, Arazyn 1.0 polyester resin # 0.8 and Epoxy resin Epoxiglass 1504; and the following solvents: styrene monomer, acetone and absolute ethyl alcohol (99.5%). We evaluated both blocks confection and thin sections manufacture. We also assessed the impregnation quality during soil blocks preparation based on the following parameters: odor, color, amount of material spent, pigment solubility, polymerization and drying, cutting, number of reimpregnations, and reagent costs. Within the product quality we also evaluate the non-impregnated pores quantities besides a qualitative evaluation of the thin sections. We found the polyester resin Arazyn 1.0 # 08 (containing acetone as a solvent) had satisfactory results in the impregnation of soil samples for both block soils and thin sections using the three soil texture types. Even though this treatment significantly decreased the use of styrene due to the potential substitution for acetone, we were unable to completely replace the styrene. On the other hand, the epoxy resin demonstrated limitations regarding the thin section quality, so that the results were not satisfactory for the final product. The epoxy resin can be considered a good alternative for analyzing soil blocks solely, since it presented positive results for the three impregnated soil textures.

As modificações estruturais causadas no solo por diferentes sistemas de manejo podem resultar em diferentes níveis de compactação, interferindo na densidade e porosidade do solo, alterando o crescimento radicular das plantas e funcionamento hídrico, por exemplo. A pressão de preconsolidação é um atributo físico do solo, que representa a máxima pressão que o mesmo pode suportar sem que ocorram deformações plásticas e tem sido utilizada para identificar a compactação, sendo capaz de quantificar as pressões que podem ser aplicadas ao solo sem provocar compactação adicional. A quantificação e a caracterização da porosidade do solo permitem avaliar sua qualidade estrutural. Para tal, tem-se utilizado os estudos micromorfométricos, com foco no estudo do sistema poroso do solo. O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a mudança no tamanho e morfologia dos poros em função da pressão de preconsolidação de dois solos com textura e estrutura contrastantes. Os solos foram classificados como Latossolo Vermelho de textura muito argilosa, localizado no município de Piracicaba - SP / Brasil e Neossolo Quartzarênico de textura arenosa, localizado no município de São Pedro - SP / Brasil. Foram coletadas três amostras indeformadas em anéis volumétricos com 2,5 cm de altura e 7 cm de diâmetro, na profundidade de 0 - 2,5 cm, 17,5 - 20 cm e no horizonte diagnóstico de cada solo (Bw a 150 cm de profundidade no caso do Latossolo e C a 50 cm de profundidade no caso do Neossolo). Em seguida, as amostras foram equilibradas nas tensões de -1, -6, -10, -33, -100 e -1500 KPa e em sequência submetidas ao ensaio de compressão uniaxial, onde foram aplicadas de forma sucessiva as pressões de 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 e 1600 KPa. Após o ensaio, foi feita a curva de compressão do solo, para obtenção da pressão de preconsolidação dos mesmos. Em seguida as amostras foram impregnadas para posterior análise das imagens obtidas. Observou-se em todos os horizontes dos dois solos estudados que quanto maior a umidade volumétrica, menor os valores de pressão de preconsolidação, ou seja, quanto maior o teor de água no solo, maior sua suscetibilidade a compactação. O Neossolo apresentou em geral, pressões de preconsolidação maiores que o Latossolo, apresentando maior capacidade de suporte de carga, devido a sua textura ser arenosa e a estrutura em grãos simples. Foi possível observar que as amostras compactadas apresentaram maiores quantidades de poros arredondados e alongados, sobretudo de tamanhos médios e pequenos, enquanto as testemunhas não compactadas apresentaram poros complexos, arredondados e alongados de todos os tamanhos. Concluiu-se que a compactação alterou a morfologia dos poros, assim como o tamanho e a conectividade entre eles. Different management system can modify soil structure in several soil compaction levels interfering soil density and porosity which affects, for example, plant root development and soil water balance. Preconsolidate pressure is a soil physical attribute that represent the maximum pressure that a soil can support without suffering plastic deformation and has been used not only to identify soil compaction, but also quantify the amount of pressure that can be applied in soil without causing additional compaction. Evaluation of soil structure quality can be made through the quantification and characterization of soil porosity which are based on micromorphometric studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes on soil size and morphology as function of the preconsolidate pressure in two soils with different texture and structure. Soils used in the studied were classified as Oxisol Clay texture, located the Piracicaba city - SP/Brazil and Entisol Sand texture, located Sao Pedro city - SP/Brazil. It was sampled three undisturbed in volumetric ring with 2.5 cm of height and 7 cm of diameter at the depths of 0-2.5 cm, 17.5-20 cm and diagnostic horizon from each soil (Bw at 150 cm depth for LATOSSOLO and 50 cm depth for NEOSSOLO). Samples were balanced at tensions of -1, -6, -10, -33, -100 and -1500 KPa and, then, submitted to the unixial compression test under seven pressures (25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 KPa). Soil compression curve was made in order to achieve the preconsolidate pressure. The samples were impregnated before image analysis. Results indicate that, at all soil horizons from both soil, higher volumetric water content is related to lower preconsolidation pressure values becoming more susceptible to compaction. Entisol presented, in general, higher preconsolidation pressures than Oxisol, indicating that it has higher soil bearing capacity due to sandy texture and simple grain structure. It was possible to note that compressed samples had higher quantity of small and medium rounded pores and elongated size, while the standard non-compressed sample presented complex, rounded and elongated pores of all sizes. Therefore, it can be concluded that soil compaction changed pore morphology likewise their size and connectivity.

Estudos sobre de métodos de preparo de solo são essenciais pela necessidade em se reduzir os impactos nos solos, decorrentes da intensificação da mecanização agrícola na cultura da cana-de-açúcar e pela busca de modelos que visem proporcionar uma maior qualidade para o solo e, consequentemente, a obtenção de melhores desenvolvimentos vegetativos e maiores produtividades. O presente trabalho teve como principal objetivo, a avaliação por meio de análises micromorfométricas, das alterações na estrutura do solo decorrentes de métodos distintos de preparo de solo. Foram avaliados o preparo convencional, a partir da mobilização do solo em área total, e o preparo profundo canteirizado, com a utilização de um modelo de implemento que permite realizar uma série de operações de preparo de solo de forma simultânea, que não mobiliza a região de passagem do rodado dos maquinários e delimita um canteiro preparado para o desenvolvimento das plantas. O solo da área experimental é classificado como Nitossolo Vermelho Eutrófico latossólico, de textura muito argilosa e foram abertas trincheiras nos tratamentos em momentos distintos do ciclo comercial da cultura, a fim de serem observadas as modificações de forma temporal. Nestas, foram coletadas amostras para análises de densidade do solo e amostras indeformadas de solo para a realização de análises micromorfométricas, para a quantificação e caracterização da área ocupada por poros, tanto na região de desenvolvimento da cultura (canteiro) quanto na área de passagem do rodado. Foi possível observar uma maior área ocupada por poros no canteiro do tratamento do preparo profundo canteirizado na primeira coleta, proporcionado pelo implemento, em relação ao preparo convencional, assim como uma maior participação de poros grandes complexos frente a poros de menor tamanho e arredondados. Porém, notou-se nas áreas sem influência do sistema radicular da planta, como na região de passagem do rodado e centro do canteiro, uma redução da área ocupada por poros entre uma coleta e outra, tanto por conta do tráfego agrícola quanto pela acomodação do solo desestruturado no preparo profundo canteirizado, podendo vir a acarretar em menores desenvolvimentos radiculares horizontalmente e deixando a área mais propicia a menores taxas de infiltração de água no solo, reduzindo o fluxo hídrico internamente e, consequentemente, aumentando os riscos da ocorrência de processos erosivos. Já no preparo convencional, os resultados indicaram uma manutenção da estrutura proporcionada pelo tipo de preparo entre as coletas, com poros menores e arredondados. Studies about soil tillage methods are essential due to the necessity of reducing impact in soils caused by the intensification of mechanic agricultural operations in sugarcane. These studies are also important by the pursuit of models that enables a better quality to the soil and, as a consequence, obtaining better vegetative development and productivity. This study had as its main objective the evaluation of soil structural changes caused by different methods of soil tillage by micromorphometric analysis. Two soil tillage systems were evaluated, the conventional soil tillage, which mobilizes the soil in the whole area, and the deep bedding tillage, which is done by an agricultural implement that allows a series of operations simultaneously and does not mobilizes the soil in the wheel\'s path, delimiting a bed for the plant development. The soil of the experimental area is classified as a Eutric Nitisol with a high clay texture. Pitches were opened in the treatments in different timings during the commercial cycle of the culture aiming the observation of temporal modifications in the soil. Samples were collected for density analysis and undisturbed samples were collected for micromorphometric analysis, for quantification and characterization of the pore area in either the root development area (bed) or the wheel\'s path. It was possible to observe a largest pore area in the deep bedding tillage system on the first collection due to the implement when compared to the conventional, as well as a largest occurrence of complex pores against smaller rounded pores. However, it was observed in the areas without the direct influence of the root system, as in the wheel\'s path and bed center, a reduction of the pore area between the two collections because of agricultural machinery traffic and accommodation of the unstructured soil in the deep bedding tillage system. This occurrence might incur in lowering root development horizontally and letting the area prone to lower water infiltration, which reduces the water flow internally and increases the risk of erosive processes. As regards the conventional tillage system, the results indicated a structural maintenance enabled by the tillage method between the collections, presenting smaller rounded pores.

As propriedades hidráulicas do solo de interesse são a curva de retenção da água no solo, a condutividade hidráulica e difusividade hidráulica, ambas em função do conteúdo de água no solo. Estas propriedades dependem do tamanho, forma, distribuição e grau de interconexões dos poros. O método do perfil instantâneo é um dos métodos mais utilizados na determinação da condutividade hidráulica do solo não saturado pela sua simplicidade experimental e matemática. Assim, este projeto visa avaliar a) a condutividade hidráulica em função do conteúdo de água em dois solos bem distintos estruturalmente pelo método do perfil instantâneo, com e sem a remoção de horizontes sobrejacentes, estimando o conteúdo de água via curvas de retenção determinadas em laboratório e em campo, e b) o sistema poroso do solo por meio de técnicas de análise de imagens e correlacionar os resultados à condutividade hidráulica do solo não saturado obtido pelo método do perfil instantâneo. O experimento foi conduzido em quatro horizontes de um Latossolo e de um Nitossolo. A CRA em campo foi elaborada utilizando-se tensiômetros com manômetro de mercúrio, enquanto que a CRA em laboratório foi determinada com amostras de solo com estrutura indeformada em funis de placa porosa e em câmara de pressão com placa porosa. A condutividade hidráulica não saturada foi determinada pelo método indireto em laboratório e em campo, seguindo a metodologia do método do perfil instantâneo, sem e com a remoção dos horizontes sobrejacentes. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que: (a) os valores do conteúdo de água médio à base de volume para cada tensão em campo foram menores que os obtidos em laboratório em praticamente todas as tensões; (b) a eficiência da equação de ajuste da curva de retenção da água foi maior para o método de laboratório; (c) as análises micromorfométricas tenderam a subestimar os valores de área de poro para todas as classes de tamanho de poros e horizontes; (d) a análise micromorfométrica fornece uma estimativa do grau de interconexões do sistema poroso; (e) pequenas mudanças no conteúdo de água no solo afetam o valor de difusividade hidráulica em um grau muito menor que a condutividade hidráulica; e (f) é necessário ter cautela ao utilizar dados de laboratório para representar as condições de campo, visto que os valores de K(θ) foram superestimados pela CRA obtida em laboratório, em relação ao método de campo, ocorrendo de forma mais pronunciada nas menores tensões da água no solo. The soil hydraulic properties of interest are the soil water retention curve, hydraulic conductivity and hydraulic diffusivity, both as a function of the soil water content. These properties depend on the size, shape, distribution and degree of pore interconnections. The instantaneous profile method is one of the most used methods to determine the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity due to its experimental and mathematical simplicity. Thus, this project aims to evaluate a) hydraulic conductivity as a function of water content in two distinct structured soils by the instant profile method, without/with removal of overlying horizons, estimating the soil water content through retention curves determined in the laboratory and in the field, and b) the soil porous system using image analysis techniques and correlation the results to the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity obtained by the instant profile method. The experiment was conducted on four horizons of a Ferralsols and a Nitisol. The SWRC was made with tensiometers with mercury manometers, while a SWRC in the laboratory was made with undisturbed soil samples in porous plate funnels and in porous plate pressure chamber. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was determined by the indirect method in the laboratory and using the instant profile method in the field, without/with removal of the overlying horizons. The conclusions are: (a) the water content for each tension in the field are smaller than those obtained in the laboratory at practically all tensions; (b) the efficiency of the water retention curve fitting equation was greater for the laboratory method; (c) the micromorphometric analysis tended to underestimate pore area values for all pore size classes and horizons; (d) the micromorphometric analysis provides an estimation of the porous system interconnections degree; (e) small changes in soil water content affect the hydraulic diffusion values to a much lower degree than the hydraulic conductivity; and (f) it is necessary to take care in using laboratory data to represent field conditions, since the values of K(θ) were overrated by the laboratory SWRC, compared to the field, more pronounced in smaller water tensions.

Estimativas sobre alterações climáticas globais têm aumentando a demanda por estudos sobre propriedades dos solos relativamente secos e limitações impostas à absorção de água pelas plantas em condições de escassez hídrica. Neste estudo, fatores que influenciam a retenção da água no solo e o murchamento de plantas foram avaliados com base no conceito de equilíbrio da água no solo. Objetivou-se com este estudo: (i) avaliar a confiabilidade de medições do conteúdo de água no solo sob altas sucções matriciais em câmaras de pressão, usando como referência a técnica de ponto de orvalho (ii) avaliar as interações entre espécies de plantas e solos com diferentes classes texturais no ponto de murcha permanente (iii) investigar as relações entre equilíbrio hidráulico da água no solo e murchamento de plantas a partir do conceito de corte hidráulico. Para tanto, um experimento para avaliar a influência dos tipos de solos e espécies de plantas, no ponto de murcha permanente foi conduzido em casa de vegetação da Escola Superior de Agricultura \"Luiz de Queiroz\" da Universidade de São Paulo, Piracicaba, São Paulo. Avaliou-se o murchamento de plantas de girassol (Helianthus annuus L.), milho (Zea mays L.) e soja (Glycine max L.). Os solos utilizados no estudo foram coletados na camada superficial (0-10 cm) em quatro áreas, selecionadas com o objetivo de obter classes texturais contrastantes, localizadas no município de Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brasil. Sub-amostras foram utilizadas para determinação da distribuição do tamanho de partículas e atributos químicos. Amostras indeformadas foram coletadas para a determinação da curva de retenção da água no solo pela técnica de câmaras de pressão. Adicionalmente, amostras deformadas foram utilizadas para determinação das características de retenção da água no solo pela técnica do ponto de orvalho em altos valores de sucções matriciais. Os dados de retenção de água no solo foram ajustados a modelos empíricos para estimativas da sucção matricial e conteúdo de água relacionada à água em equilíbrio hidráulico (água residual). Foram observadas similaridades nas determinações das características de retenção da água no solo entre as técnicas de câmaras de pressão e ponto de orvalho, sugerindo a boa drenagem das amostras de solo em câmaras de pressão. Interações significativas foram observadas entre os tipos de solos e espécies de plantas no ponto de murcha permanente, indicando que o movimento de água no contínuo solo-planta-atmosfera foi dependente de resistências relacionadas tanto ao solo quanto às plantas. Ou seja, tanto à capacidade do solo em transportar água até raízes, quanto à habilidade das plantas em absorver a água transportada, assim como, aos processos de regulação de água que ocorrem nas plantas. A abordagem baseada no conteúdo de água residual para o intervalo de sucções matriciais de 0 a 15.000 hPa não foi adequada para ilustrar a condição de equilíbrio hidráulico da água no solo, definidos pelo corte hidráulico, e relações com as sucções matriciais em ocorre o murchamento de plantas. Estimates about climate changes have increased the demand for studies of the properties of relatively dry soil and limitations on the plants water uptake in conditions of water scarcity. In this study, factors influencing the soil water retention and wilting plants were evaluated based on the concept of soil water equilibrium. The objectives of this study were: (i) to evaluate the reliability measurements of the soil water retention on pressure plate apparatus at high matric suctions using as reference the dew point meter (ii) to evaluate the interactions between soil types and plant species at permanent wilting point (iii) investigate the relationship between the hydraulic equilibrium of soil water and the plant wilting based on the hydraulic cut-off concept. A pot experiment to evaluate the effect of plant and soil types at permanent wilting point was carried out in a greenhouse at the Agricultural\'s College \"Luiz de Queiroz\" from University of São Paulo in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Soil samples were collected at the topsoil (0-10 cm) from four different locations around the city of Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Subsamples were taken to determine the particle size distribution and chemical analysis. To determine soil water retention curve 30 soil samples were collected with undisturbed soil cores. The soils were selected to have a range of texture and organic carbon content. The wilting was evaluated using plants of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.). The soil water retention data were fitted to the empirical models for estimating the matric suction and water content related soil water at hydraulic equilibrium (residual water content). Similar soil water content were observed for measurements at pressure plate apparatus and dew point meter, suggesting good drainage of the soil samples in pressure plate apparatus for the dry range of soil water retention curve. Significant interactions were observed between soil types and plant species at permanent wilting point, indicating that the water movement in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum was dependent of resistances related to soil and the plants properties. The approach based on the residual water content for the matric suctions from 0 to 15,000 hPa was not adequate to illustrate the hydraulic equilibrium of the soil water defined by the cut-hydraulic and relations with the matric suction at wilting plants.

A compactação devido ao tráfego agrícola tem se tornado um dos grandes problemas de degradação do solo. Os modelos de predição vêm sendo utilizados para investigar o impacto do tráfego sobre atributos físicos do solo. Neste estudo, relações entre parâmetros mecânicos que descrevem a compressão do solo e atributos físicos são estabelecidas, a precisão das estimativas são testadas em campo, limitações físicas do solo são quantificadas por efeito do tráfego, a sensibilidade de indicadores de compactação é avaliada, e um sistema de predição de resistência à compactação para solos brasileiros é descrito, implementado e proposto. Regressões foram usadas estimar os parâmetros mecânicos do solo, e simples modelos foram propostos em função da densidade inicial sucção matricial. Teste de campo foram usados para avaliar a precisão das estimativas, e boa concordância foi observada entre medições e simulações. Em cenários simulados, solos compactados mostraram-se bastante sensíveis a variação de fatores limitantes para as plantas, medidos pelo intervalo hídrico ótimo. Medidas de resistência à penetração e sucção matricial pós-tráfego não substituíram avaliações diretas de variação de volume no diagnóstico de compactação do solo. Um fundamental modelo de resistência à compactação em função da tensão aplicada foi proposto, e parâmetros de máquina, pneu e solo podem ser utilizados para predição do risco de compactação em Latossolos brasileiros. Compaction due to agricultural field traffic has become one of the major problems of soil degradation. Prediction models have been used to investigate the impact of the traffic on physical soil attributes. In this study, relationships among mechanical parameters which describing soil compression and physical attributes are established, the accuracy of the estimation are field-tested, physical soil limitations are quantified due to the traffic effect, the sensitivity of compaction indicators are evaluated, and a soil strength prediction system for Brazilian soils is described, implemented and proposed. Regression were used to estimate the soil mechanical parameters, and simple models were proposed as a function of the initial bulk density and matric suction. Field tests were used to evaluate the accuracy of the estimations, and good agreement was observed between measurements and simulations. On simulated scenarios, compacted soils were quite sensitive to the variation of limiting factors for the plants, measured by the least limiting water range. Post-traffic penetration resistance and matric suction measurements did not replace direct volume variation evaluations in the soil compaction diagnosis. A fundamental model of soil strength calculation as a function of the applied stress was proposed, and machinery, tyre and soil parameters can be used to predict the risk of compaction for Brazilian Oxisols.

O Brasil se destaca na produção agrícola intensiva omitindo em diversas situações práticas conservacionistas acarretando a má estrutura do solo, que por sua vez, propicia a dispersão da argila quando submetida em meio líquido. A argila prontamente dispersa em água (APDA) é a que sofre pequena agitação e pode ser quantificada pelo método do turbidímetro por definir desde os mais elevados graus de turvação até os menores (10000:1) em solução. O uso da espectroscopia tem sido crescente como uma ferramenta eficaz na quantificação das propriedades do solo. Diante disso, objetivou-se comparar métodos de determinação da APDA pelo turbidímetro e pela espectroscopia nas regiões espectrais VisNIR-SWIR-MidIR (400-25000 nm). 68 amostras foram adquiridas do horizonte B de Latossolos e subsuperficial de Neossolos Quartzarênicos e apresentam ampla variabilidade textural, química e mineralógica pertencentes aos estados de Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul e São Paulo, estas foram avaliadas química e fisicamente. A determinação da APDA ocorreu por turbidimetria e esta foi relacionada com a argila total (AT) quantificada nos comprimentos de onda VisNIR-SWIR (350-2500 nm) e MidIR (4000-400 cm-1) via espectroscopia. Através da determinação da APDA, modelos foram criados por análise de regressão múltipla e estes foram ajustados conforme o resultado da análise de variância enquanto que a AT foi quantificada através da regressão por mínimos quadrados parciais (PLSR) por meio da validação cruzada, a ACP e o PLSR foram pressupostos e os modelos foram escolhidos levando em consideração o coeficiente de determinação, erro quadrado médio e a previsão para intervalo interquartil. Ocorreu uma relação negativa entre as variáveis AT, Ca, K, Mg, C e Al com a APDA e uma relação positiva da CTC, P e m com a APDA. Ao serem transformadas para logaritmo as variáveis estiveram mais próximas da normalidade. Das 9 variáveis independentes testadas 5 foram significativamente correlacionadas com a APDA em até 95% (log(AT), log(Ca), log(CTC), log(Al) e log(P)), o modelo foi adquirido por exclusão das variáveis não significativas equivalente ao modelo gerado pelo stepwise. Houve correlação negativa entre a APDA e AT (R2=0,27). A curva espectral evidenciou elevadas discrepâncias na amplitude de reflectância e nas feições das curvas, em razão das diferenças físicas, químicas e mineralógicas dos diferentes solos estudados. Para a AT o desempenho do modelo mensurado na faixa espectral MidIR foi superior (R2 ≥ 0,6; RMSE ≥ 103; RPIQ ≥ 249). Para a APDA os modelos validados sofreram pequena variação (R2 ≥ 0,5; RMSE ≥ 3,5; RPIQ ≥ 10,2) sendo a região MidIR a melhor desempenhada. O turbidímetro mostrou-se ser um método eficaz sendo portanto recomendado para futuros trabalhos. O conteúdo de argila total dos solos estudados foi a variável mais explicativa da APDA. A espectroscopia de reflectância foi eficiente em estimar a APDA tanto quanto o turbidímetro. Brazil stands out in the intensive agricultural production omitting in several situations conservationist practices causing poor soil structure, which in turn, propitiates the dispersion of the clay when submitted in a liquid environment. The readily-dispersible clay in water (APDA) is the one that undergoes slight agitation and can be quantified by the turbidimeter method to be defined from the highest turbidity to the lowest turbidity (10000: 1) in solution. The use of spectroscopy has been increasing as an effective tool in the quantification of soil properties. The aim of this study was to compare APDA methods by the turbidimeter and by spectroscopy in the VisNIR-SWIR-MidIR (400-25000 nm) spectral regions. 68 samples were obtained from the B horizon of Latosols and subsurface of Quartzarenic Neosols and present wide textural, chemical and mineralogical variability belonging to the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo, which were evaluated chemically and physically. The determination of APDA occurred by turbidimetry and this was related to the total clay (AT) quantified at the wavelengths VisNIR-SWIR (350-2500 nm) and MidIR (4000-400 cm-1) via spectroscopy. Through the determination of the APDA, models were created by multiple regression analysis and these were adjusted according to the result of the analysis of variance while the AT was quantified through the partial least squares regression (PLSR) through the cross validation, the ACP and The PLSR were assumptions and the models were chosen taking into account the coefficient of determination, mean square error and the forecast for interquartile range. There was a negative relationship between the variables AT, Ca, K, Mg, C and Al with APDA and a positive relation of CTC, P and m with APDA. When they were transformed to logarithm the variables were closer to normal. Of the 9 independent variables tested 5 were significantly correlated with APDA in up to 95% (log (AT), log (Ca), log (CTC), log (Al) and log (P)), the model was acquired by excluding the Non-significant variables equivalent to the model generated by stepwise. There was a negative correlation between APDA and AT (R2 = 0.27). The spectral curve showed high discrepancies in reflectance amplitude and curves, due to the physical, chemical and mineralogical differences of the studied soils. For AT, the performance of the model measured in the MidIR spectral range was higher (R2> 0.6, RMSE> 103, RPIQ> 249). For the APDA, the validated models suffered a small variation (R2> 0.5, RMSE> 3.5, RPIQ> 10.2), with the MidIR region being the best performed. The turbidimeter proved to be an effective method and is therefore recommended for future work. The total clay content of the studied soils was the most explanatory variable of APDA. Reflectance spectroscopy was efficient in estimating APDA as much as the turbidimeter.

A agricultura demanda grande quantidade de água para a produção de alimentos e fibras. Técnicas que determinem e monitorem a dinâmica da água no solo são importantes para promover o uso correto e consciente desse recurso natural. Diante do exposto, a tensiometria é uma ferramenta eficiente na determinação da dinâmica da água em solos agrícolas, podendo ser utilizada em conjunto com sensores de capacitância para a caracterização da curva de retenção de água no solo. Contudo, apesar de práticos, erros associados à instalação e às características das cápsulas podem comprometer a precisão dos tensiômetros. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo testar a influência do uso de lama de solo no momento da instalação, bem como o formato e condutância hidráulica de cápsulas de tensiômetros de punção sobre o potencial matricial da água no solo, tendo-se como referência tensiômetros com manômetro de mercúrio. Também, se objetivou determinar a curva de retenção de água no solo com base nos dados obtidos por tensiometria e de um sensor de capacitância. Os resultados mostram que o formato das cápsulas de cerâmica e a lama de solo influenciaram as determinações do potencial matricial, ao contrário da condutância hidráulica das cápsulas. A lama de solo é indicada na instalação de tensiômetros com manômetro de mercúrio e de punção. As curvas de retenção diferiram quanto aos sistemas de aquisição (manômetro de mercúrio ou tensímetro); no entanto, o modelo ajustado não foi sensível em distinguir diferenças entre os tratamentos quanto ao formato das cápsulas ou uso de lama de solo. De modo geral, ocorreu uma subestimativa dos ajustes das curvas de retenção para os tensiômetros de punção, o que pode levar a interpretações errôneas das curvas de retenção de água no solo quando determinadas por meio desses instrumentos. The agriculture demand large amounts of water for food and fiber production. The techniques used to determine and monitor the water dynamics in the soil are important to promote the correct and conscious use of this natural resource. Given the above, the tensiometry is an efficient tool for the determination the water dynamics in soils, which can be used in conjunction with capacitance sensors to characterize the water retention curve in the soil. However, although practical, errors associated with the installation and the characteristics of the capsules may compromise the accuracy of tensiometers. This study aimed to test the influence of the use of soil slurry during the tensiometer installation, the format and hydraulic conductance of the capsules from puncture tensiometers on the matric potential of soil water, taking as reference tensiometers equipped with mercury manometers. In addition, aimed to determine the soil-water retention curve based on data obtained by tensiometry and a capacitance sensor. The results shows that the format of the ceramic capsules and the use of the slurry influenced the measurements of matric potential, as opposed to hydraulic conductance of the capsules. The soil slurry is recommended for tensiometers equiped with mercury manometer and puncture tensiometers. The retention curves differed among the acquisition systems (mercury manometer or tensimeter); however, the fitted model was not sensitive enough to distinguish differences between treatments for the format of the capsules or the use of soil slurry. In general, there was an underestimation of the retention curve for puncture tensiometers, which can lead to erroneous interpretations of the soil-water retention curve when determined by these instruments.
