The search for natural wood preservatives is becoming increasingly evident due to industrial preservatives presenting several environmental restrictions, such as soil, water and ecosystems contamination. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to evaluate the antifungal activity of Cinnamomum zeylanicum bark natural extract subjected to rotting fungi. In order to obtain the aqueous extract, two methods were performed with different concentrations, 50 and 100 g L-1, using Pycnoporus sanguineus e Gloeophyllum trabeum, mycelium. In the first, we kept the C. Zeylanicum bark with distilled water for 1 h in water bath and, in the second, the same concentrations were used, however, this was kept in a recipient for 24 h. Then, the extract was subjected to sterilization along with the BDA medium in autoclave at 120ºC for 20 min, they were then put in petri dishes for later evaluation of the mycelium root growth compared with the control. The fungi Pycnoporus sanguineus presented higher fungal activity, obtaining total inhibition of all treatments and extract concentrations, however, for the fungi Gloeophyllum trabeum, the 100 g L-1 concentration warmed in water bath obtained a better result than the others. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Cinnamomum zeylanicum aqueous extract presented inhibitory potential. Considering this, we suggest that more studies with this thematic should be carried out, seeking to discover new alternatives for wood preservatives that are less damaging to the environment and to mankind.

A secagem da madeira utilizando micro-ondas é recente no Brasil e, por isso, mais pesquisas devem ser exploradas no sentido de melhor conhecimento e divulgação desta tecnologia. O objetivo do trabalho foi comparar a secagem da madeira de Hovenia dulcis e Eucalyptus tereticornis em forno micro-ondas com diferentes potências de temperatura. Amostras foram submetidas a secagem em micro-ondas com 50% e 100% da potência de temperatura. Avaliou-se o teor de umidade, a taxa de secagem e o gradiente de umidade. Observou-se que Hovenia dulcis, mesmo apresentando maior umidade inicial conseguiu atingir o teor de umidade final em menor tempo. A taxa de secagem para esta espécie também apontou melhores resultados, indicando que a água flui rapidamente, mesmo com a madeira apresentando mais que o dobro de umidade em relação à Eucalyptus tereticornis. Os gradientes de umidades para Eucalyptus tereticornis manifestaram valores negativos, indicando que a parte interna das peças estavam mais secas que a parte externa, refletindo uma das principais características da secagem por micro-ondas, que é o aquecimento de dentro para fora, gerando calor diretamente no centro da madeira. Por fim, em ambas as potências de temperaturas, observou-se que a madeira de Eucalyptus tereticornis apresentou maior dificuldade de secagem em comparação a Hovenia dulcis, assinalando a dificuldade na secagem de eucaliptos. Microwave drying of wood is recent in Brazil, requiring more research to improve knowledge and dissemination of this technology. The objective of this study is to evaluate the drying of the wood in a microwave oven with different temperature powers and to compare its use in the water removal process in Hovenia dulcis and Eucalyptus tereticornis. Samples were subjected to microwave drying with 50% or 100% power level. Moisture content, drying rate and moisture gradient were evaluated. Hovenia dulcis, even with a higher initial moisture content, reached the final moisture content in less time. The drying rate for this species was also higher (0.89 at 100% power level, compared to 0.22 for E. tereticornis) indicating that water flows quickly, even with the wood presenting more than twice the humidity in relation to the E. tereticornis. Moisture gradients for Eucalyptus tereticornis showed negative values, indicating that the inside of the analyzed wood pieces (-1,36 in 100% and -1,63 in 50% power level) were drier than the outside (-1,82 in 100% and -1,88 in 50% power level), reflecting one of the main characteristics of microwave drying, which is heating from the inside out, generating heat directly in the center of the wood. Regardless of the power level used, Eucalyptus tereticornis wood presented greater difficulty in drying compared to Hovenia dulcis.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the biological resistance of agglomerated panels made from agricultural residues (grapevine, annoni grass), urban (carton pack, plastic) and forest (Pinus sp. Wood) of white rot, Pycnoporus sanguineus. For the evaluations, the accelerated rotting test was performed according to the recommendations of the American standard ASTM D 2017. The specimens were removed from the center of the panels, with dimensions of 2.0 x 2.0 cm, totaling 25 samples divided into 5 treatments. The resistance to attack of the fungus was then determined by mass loss. The averages at 5% of significance differed statiscally, among 3 treatments by the Duncan test. Scanning microscopy (SEM) allowed visualization of the panel particles before and after the fungus attack, facilitating the understanding of the results obtained in the loss of mass. The 100% panel of pine wood was classified as non-resistant, and the addition of percentages of agricultural residues (stump, annoni grass) and urban (carton and plastic) residues improved the resistance class of the panels, becoming resistant and very resistant, respectively.

O uso da madeira de espécies nativas pode ser visto como alternativa de renda para produtores rurais, no entanto ainda existe uma grande lacuna a ser preenchida pelas instituições de pesquisa a respeito das características dessa a fim de embasar sua utilização. Neste sentido, o presente estudo objetivou caracterizar as propriedades físico-mecânicas da madeira de Dodonaea viscosa Jacq. Para tanto, foram utilizadas neste estudo exemplares da espécie Dodanaea viscosa, conhecida popularmente como faxina vermelha ou vassoura-vermelha, com aproximadamente quinze anos de idade. Os corpos de prova foram confeccionados seguindo as dimensões descritas nas respectivas normas de cada ensaio. Após a confecção, os mesmos foram acondicionados em câmara climatizada a uma temperatura de 20°C e 65% de umidade relativa, onde permaneceram até atingirem umidade de equilíbrio de 12%. Posteriormente, foram avaliados: massa específica aparente, flexão estática, flexão dinâmica e dureza Janka. A partir dos resultados obtidos neste estudo, pode-se perceber que a madeira de Dodonaea viscosa pode ser classificada como de alta densidade, possui bom desempenho nas propriedades mecânicas, como módulo de ruptura, módulo de elasticidade, dureza Janka e resistência ao impacto. Além disso, apresenta alto valor de cota dinâmica, caracterizando-a como uma madeira resiliente.

O gradiente de umidade, que corresponde à diferença de umidade entre o centro e a periferia da peça de madeira, desempenha papel importante no desenvolvimento de tensões que causam defeitos como rachaduras, encruamento e empenamentos. Cuidados para reduzir essa diferença no decorrer e no final do processo de secagem são procedimentos importantes para que a qualidade da madeira não seja comprometida. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do gradiente de umidade no desenvolvimento de tensões resultantes da secagem da madeira de Eucalyptus tereticornis conduzida em estufa convencional. Para isso, tábuas de 40 x 10 x 70 mm foram submetidas à secagem nas temperaturas de 45, 60 e 75°C, desde verde até o teor de umidade de 12%. No final da secagem foi avaliado a qualidade do material, por meio do gradiente de umidade, tensões de secagem e defeitos. A temperatura de 75ºC proporcionou menor tempo de secagem, porém, maiores gradientes de umidade, maiores tensões e menor qualidade da madeira ao final da secagem. As temperaturas de 60º e 40ºC apresentaram grande diferença no tempo de secagem, porém gradientes de umidade muito semelhantes e qualidade do material final também. Pode-se então, sugerir que seja utilizada a temperatura de 60ºC para a secagem da madeira de Eucalyptus tereticornis com ganho de tempo e qualidade muito próxima da proporcionada por baixas temperaturas. The moisture gradient, which corresponds to the humidity difference between the center and the periphery of the piece of wood plays an important role in the development of stresses that cause defects such as cracking, hardening and warping. Care to reduce this difference during and at the end of the drying process are important procedures so that the quality of the wood is not compromised. The present work had as the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the moisture gradient on the development of stresses of drying Eucalyptus tereticornis wood conducted in a conventional greenhouse. For 40 x 10 x 70 mm boards were then dried at temperatures of 45ºC, 60ºC and 75ºC, from green to a moisture content of 12%. At the end of the drying, the quality was evaluated. through the moisture gradient, drying stresses and defects. The temperature 75ºC provided shorter drying time, but higher moisture gradients, higher tensions and lower wood quality at the end of drying. The temperatures of 60ºC and 40ºC showed great difference in drying time, but humidity gradients very similar and quality of the fnal material as well. One can then suggest that it be 60ºC for drying Eucalyptus tereticornis wood with gain in time and quality very close to that provided by low temperatures.

A madeira é um recurso natural renovável que possui vantagens quando comparada a outros materiais utilizados pela indústria, o conhecimento das propriedades anatômicas do gênero Eucalyptus, tais como dimensões dos vasos e das fibras, desempenham papel fundamental em processos fisiológicos e de sustentação, e garantem o melhor aproveitamento da espécie. O objetivo do estudo foi caracterizar as madeiras de seis clones comerciais de Eucalyptus spp., sob o ponto de vista da anatomia de fibras e da densidade básica, considerando o seu aproveitamento na indústria de celulose. Os materiais de seis clones provieram de plantios comerciais com espaçamento de 2 x 3 metros, com 7 anos de idade. Para tanto, foram confeccionados, a partir de seis árvores de cada clone, corpos de prova para a verificação da massa específica e anatomia de fibras a partir de discos retirados na altura do peito (DAP), transformados em corpos de prova para estudos anatômicos qualitativos e quantitativos. A confecção das lâminas de macerados seguiu o método Ácido Nítrico-Acético. Para o estudo anatômico das fibras, foi observado valores do índice de Runkel menores que 1, estes são indicados para produção de papéis e considerados muito bons e bons, porém, para uma recomendação segura para esse fim, é importante que seja realizada uma análise química da sua madeira. Wood is a renewable natural resource that has advantages when compared to other materials used by industry, knowledge of the anatomical properties of the genus Eucalyptus, such as vessel and fiber dimensions, play a fundamental role in physiological and sustentation processes, and guarantee the better use of the species. The objective of the study was to characterize the wood of six commercial clones of Eucalyptus spp. From the point of view of fiber anatomy and basic density, considering their use in the pulp industry. The materials of six clones came from commercial plantations with spacing of 2 x 3 meters, with 7 years of age. In order to do so, six specimens of each clone were prepared to verify the specific mass and anatomy of the fibers from discs taken at chest height (DAP), which were transformed into specimens for qualitative anatomical studies and quantitative. The preparation of macerated slides followed the method Nitric-Acetic Acid. For the anatomical study of the fibers, it was observed values of the Runkel index less than 1, these are indicated for paper production and considered very good and good, however, for a safe recommendation for this purpose, it is important to perform a chemical analysis.
