Given the proximity of the rest frequencies of OH and the hyperfine transition of neutral atomic hydrogen (H i), radio surveys to probe the cosmic evolution of H i in galaxies also offer exciting prospects for exploiting OHMs to probe the cosmic history of gas-rich mergers. Using observations for the Looking At the Distant Universe with the MeerKAT Array (LADUMA) deep H i survey, we report the first untargeted detection of an OHM at z > 0.5, LADUMA J033046.20−275518.1 (nicknamed "Nkalakatha"). The host system, WISEA J033046.26−275518.3, is an infrared-luminous radio galaxy whose optical redshift z ≈ 0.52 confirms the MeerKAT emission-line detection as OH at a redshift zOH = 0.5225 ± 0.0001 rather than H i at lower redshift. The detected spectral line has 18.4σ peak significance, a width of 459 ± 59 km s−1, and an integrated luminosity of (6.31 ± 0.18 [statistical] ± 0.31 [systematic]) × 103 L⊙, placing it among the most luminous OHMs known. The galaxy's far-infrared luminosity LFIR = (1.576 ±0.013) × 1012 L⊙ marks it as an ultraluminous infrared galaxy; its ratio of OH and infrared luminosities is similar to those for lower-redshift OHMs. A comparison between optical and OH redshifts offers a slight indication of an OH outflow. This detection represents the first step toward a systematic exploitation of OHMs as a tracer of galaxy growth at high redshifts. © 2022. The Author(s). Abstract: The star formation efficiency (SFE) has been shown to vary across different environments, particularly within galactic starbursts and deep within the bulges of galaxies. Various quenching mechanisms may be responsible, ranging from galactic dynamics to feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). Here, we use spatially-resolved observations of warm ionised gas emission lines from the imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and cold molecular gas (CO(2-1)) from the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) to study the SFE in the bulge of the AGN-host galaxy NGC 3169. After distinguishing star-forming regions from AGN-ionised regions using emission-line ratio diagnostics, we measure spatially-resolved molecular gas depletion times (\tau_dep = 1/SFE) with a spatial resolution of \approx 100 pc within a galactocentric radius of 1.8 kpc. We identify a star-forming ring located at radii 1.25 \pm 0.6 kpc with an average \tau_dep of 0.3 Gyr. At radii < 0.9 kpc, however, the molecular gas surface densities and depletion times increase with decreasing radius, the latter reaching approximately 2.3 Gyr at a radius \approx 500 pc. Based on analyses of the gas kinematics and comparisons with simulations, we identify AGN feedback, bulge morphology and dynamics as the possible causes of the radial profile of SFE observed in the central region of NGC 3169., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: Aims. We produce a clean and well-characterised catalogue of objects within 100 pc of the Sun from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We characterise the catalogue through comparisons to the full data release, external catalogues, and simulations. We carry out a first analysis of the science that is possible with this sample to demonstrate its potential and best practices for its use., Methods. Theselection of objects within 100 pc from the full catalogue used selected training sets, machine-learning procedures, astrometric quantities, and solution quality indicators to determine a probability that the astrometric solution is reliable. The training set construction exploited the astrometric data, quality flags, and external photometry. For all candidates we calculated distance posterior probability densities using Bayesian procedures and mock catalogues to define priors. Any object with reliable astrometry and a non-zero probability of being within 100 pc is included in the catalogue., Results. We have produced a catalogue of 331 312 objects that we estimate contains at least 92% of stars of stellar type M9 within 100 pc of the Sun. We estimate that 9% of the stars in this catalogue probably lie outside 100 pc, but when the distance probability function is used, a correct treatment of this contamination is possible. We produced luminosity functions with a high signal-to-noise ratio for the main-sequence stars, giants, and white dwarfs. We examined in detail the Hyades cluster, the white dwarf population, and wide-binary systems and produced candidate lists for all three samples. We detected local manifestations of several streams, superclusters, and halo objects, in which we identified 12 members of Gaia Enceladus. We present the first direct parallaxes of five objects in multiple systems within 10 pc of the Sun., Conclusions. We provide the community with a large, well-characterised catalogue of objects in the solar neighbourhood. This is a primary benchmark for measuring and understanding fundamental parameters and descriptive functions in astronomy.

Abstract: Triangulum, M33, is a low mass, relatively undisturbed spiral galaxy that offers a new regime in which to test models of dynamical heating. In spite of its proximity, the dynamical heating history of M33 has not yet been well constrained. In this work, we present the TREX Survey, the largest stellar spectroscopic survey across the disk of M33. We present the stellar disk kinematics as a function of age to study the past and ongoing dynamical heating of M33. We measure line of sight velocities for ~4,500 disk stars. Using a subset, we divide the stars into broad age bins using Hubble Space Telescope and Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope photometric catalogs: massive main sequence stars and helium burning stars (~80 Myr), intermediate mass asymptotic branch stars (~1 Gyr), and low mass red giant branch stars (~4 Gyr). We compare the stellar disk dynamics to that of the gas using existing HI, CO, and Halpha kinematics. We find that the disk of M33 has relatively low velocity dispersion (~16 km/s), and unlike in the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, there is no strong trend in velocity dispersion as a function of stellar age. The youngest disk stars are as dynamically hot as the oldest disk stars and are dynamically hotter than predicted by most M33 like low mass simulated analogs in Illustris. The velocity dispersion of the young stars is highly structured, with the large velocity dispersion fairly localized. The cause of this high velocity dispersion is not evident from the observations and simulated analogs presented here., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: Seabroke, G. M., et al., [Context] Gaia's Early Third Data Release (EDR3) does not contain new radial velocities because these will be published in Gaia's full third data release (DR3), expected in the first half of 2022. To maximise the usefulness of EDR3, Gaia's second data release (DR2) sources (with radial velocities) are matched to EDR3 sources to allow their DR2 radial velocities to also be included in EDR3. This presents two considerations: (i) a list of 70 365 sources with potentially contaminated DR2 radial velocities has been published; and (ii) EDR3 is based on a new astrometric solution and a new source list, which means sources in DR2 may not be in EDR3. [Aims] The two aims of this work are: (i) investigate the list in order to improve the DR2 radial velocities being included in EDR3 and to avoid false-positive hypervelocity candidates; and (ii) match the DR2 sources (with radial velocities) to EDR3 sources. [Methods] Thetwo methods of this work are: (i) unpublished, preliminary DR3 radial velocities of sources on the list, and high-velocity stars not on the list, are compared with their DR2 radial velocities to identify and remove contaminated DR2 radial velocities from EDR3; and (ii) proper motions and epoch position propagation is used to attempt to match all sources with radial velocities in DR2 to EDR3 sources. The comparison of DR2 and DR3 radial velocities is used to resolve match ambiguities. [Results] EDR3 contains 7 209 831 sources with a DR2 radial velocity, which is 99.8% of sources with a radial velocity in DR2 (7 224 631). 14 800 radial velocities from DR2 are not propagated to any EDR3 sources because (i) 3871 from the list are found to either not have a DR3 radial velocity or it differs significantly from its DR2 value, and five high-velocity stars not on the list are confirmed to have contaminated radial velocities, in one case because of contamination from the non-overlapping Radial Velocity Spectrometer windows of a nearby, bright star; and (ii) 10 924 DR2 sources could not be satisfactorily matched to any EDR3 sources, so their DR2 radial velocities are also missing from EDR3. [Conclusions] The reliability of radial velocities in EDR3 has improved compared to DR2 because the update removes a small fraction of erroneous radial velocities (0.05% of DR2 radial velocities and 5.5% of the list). Lessons learnt from EDR3 (e.g. bright star contamination) will improve the radial velocities in future Gaia data releases. The main reason for radial velocities from DR2 not propagating to EDR3 is not related to DR2 radial velocity quality. Abstract: Context. The Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) on board the Gaia satellite is not provided with a wavelength calibration lamp. It uses its observations of stars with known radial velocity to derive the dispersion relation. To derive an accurate radial velocity calibration, a precise knowledge of the line spread function (LSF) of the RVS is necessary. Good-quality ground-based observations in the wavelength range of the RVS are highly desired to determine the LSF. Aims. Several radial velocity standard stars are available to the Gaia community. The highest possible number of calibrators will surely allow us to improve the accuracy of the radial velocity. Because the LSF may vary across the focal plane of the RVS, a large number of high-quality spectra for the LSF calibration may allow us to better sample the properties of the focal plane. Methods. We selected a sample of stars to be observed with UVES at the Very Large Telescope, in a setting including the wavelength range of RVS, that are bright enough to allow obtaining high-quality spectra in a short time. We also selected stars that lack chemical investigation in order to increase the sample of bright, close by stars with a complete chemical inventory. Results. We here present the chemical analysis of the first sample of 80 evolved stars. The quality of the spectra is very good, therefore we were able to derive abundances for 20 elements. The metallicity range spanned by the sample is about 1 dex, from slightly metal-poor to solar metallicity. We derived the Rb abundance for all stars and investigated departures from local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) in the formation of its lines. Conclusions. The sample of spectra is of good quality, which is useful for a Gaia radial velocity calibration. The Rb NLTE effects in this stellar parameters range are small but sometimes non-negligible, especially for spectra of this good quality.

Abstract: Using the astrometry and integrated photometry from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), we map the density variations in the distribution of young Upper Main Sequence (UMS) stars, open clusters and classical Cepheids in the Galactic disk within several kiloparsecs of the Sun. Maps of relative over/under-dense regions for UMS stars in the Galactic disk are derived, using both bivariate kernel density estimators and wavelet transformations. The resulting overdensity maps exhibit large-scale arches, that extend in a clumpy but coherent way over the entire sampled volume, indicating the location of the spiral arms segments in the vicinity of the Sun. Peaks in the UMS overdensity are well-matched by the distribution of young and intrinsically bright open clusters. By applying a wavelet transformation to a sample of classical Cepheids, we find that their overdensities possibly extend the spiral arm segments on a larger scale (~10 kpc from the Sun). While the resulting map based on the UMS sample is generally consistent with previous models of the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm, the geometry of the arms in the III quadrant (galactic longitudes $180^\circ < l < 270^\circ$) differs significantly from many previous models. In particular we find that our maps favour a larger pitch angle for the Perseus arm, and that the Local Arm extends into the III quadrant at least 4 kpc past the Sun's position, giving it a total length of at least 8 kpc., 10 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: Aims. We aim to demonstrate the scientific potential of the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) for the study of different aspects of the Milky Way structure and evolution and we provide, at the same time, a description of several practical aspects of the data and examples of their usage., Methods. We used astrometric positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and photometry from EDR3 to select different populations and components and to calculate the distances and velocities in the direction of the anticentre. In this direction, the Gaia astrometric data alone enable the calculation of the vertical and azimuthal velocities; also, the extinction is relatively low compared to other directions in the Galactic plane. We then explore the disturbances of the current disc, the spatial and kinematical distributions of early accreted versus in situ stars, the structures in the outer parts of the disc, and the orbits of open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1., Results. With the improved astrometry and photometry of EDR3, we find that: (i) the dynamics of the Galactic disc are very complex with oscillations in the median rotation and vertical velocities as a function of radius, vertical asymmetries, and new correlations, including a bimodality with disc stars with large angular momentum moving vertically upwards from below the plane, and disc stars with slightly lower angular momentum moving preferentially downwards; (ii) we resolve the kinematic substructure (diagonal ridges) in the outer parts of the disc for the first time; (iii) the red sequence that has been associated with the proto-Galactic disc that was present at the time of the merger with Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage is currently radially concentrated up to around 14 kpc, while the blue sequence that has been associated with debris of the satellite extends beyond that; (iv) there are density structures in the outer disc, both above and below the plane, most probably related to Monoceros, the Anticentre Stream, and TriAnd, for which the Gaia data allow an exhaustive selection of candidate member stars and dynamical study; and (v) the open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1, despite being located at large distances from the Galactic centre, are on nearly circular disc-like orbits., Conclusions. Even with our simple preliminary exploration of the Gaia EDR3, we demonstrate how, once again, these data from the European Space Agency are crucial for our understanding of the different pieces of our Galaxy and their connection to its global structure and history.

Abstract: We present the early installment of the third Gaia data release, Gaia EDR3, consisting of astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, complemented with the list of radial velocities from Gaia DR2. Gaia EDR3 contains celestial positions and the apparent brightness in G for approximately 1.8 billion sources. For 1.5 billion of those sources, parallaxes, proper motions, and the (G_BP-G_RP) colour are also available. The passbands for G, G_BP, and G_RP are provided as part of the release. For ease of use, the 7 million radial velocities from Gaia DR2 are included in this release, after the removal of a small number of spurious values. New radial velocities will appear as part of Gaia DR3. Finally, Gaia EDR3 represents an updated materialisation of the celestial reference frame (CRF) in the optical, the Gaia-CRF3, which is based solely on extragalactic sources. The creation of the source list for Gaia EDR3 includes enhancements that make it more robust with respect to high proper motion stars, and the disturbing effects of spurious and partially resolved sources. The source list is largely the same as that for Gaia DR2, but it does feature new sources and there are some notable changes. The source list will not change for Gaia DR3. Gaia EDR3 represents a significant advance over Gaia DR2, with parallax precisions increased by 30 percent, proper motion precisions increased by a factor of 2, and the systematic errors in the astrometry suppressed by 30--40 percent for the parallaxes and by a factor ~2.5 for the proper motions. The photometry also features increased precision, but above all much better homogeneity across colour, magnitude, and celestial position. A single passband for G, G_BP, and G_RP is valid over the entire magnitude and colour range, with no systematics above the 1 percent level.

Abstract: Tarricq, Y., et al. Gaia Multilateral Agreement, [Context] Open clusters (OCs) trace the evolution of the Galactic disc with great accuracy. Gaia and large ground-based spectroscopic surveys make it possible to determine their properties and study their kinematics with unprecedented precision. [Aims] We study the kinematical behaviour of the OC population over time. We take advantage of the latest age determinations of OCs to investigate the correlations of the 6D phase-space coordinates and orbital properties with age. The phase-space distribution, age-velocity relation, and action distribution are compared to those of field stars. We also investigate the rotation curve of the Milky Way traced by OCs, and we compare it to that of other observational or theoretical studies. [Methods] We gathered nearly 30 000 radial velocity (RV) measurements of OC members from both Gaia-RVS data and ground-based surveys and catalogues. We computed the weighted mean RV, Galactic velocities, and orbital parameters of 1382 OCs. We investigated their distributions as a function of age and by comparison to field stars. [Results] We provide the largest RV catalogue available for OCs, half of it based on at least three members. Compared to field stars, we note that OCs are not on exactly the same arches in the radial-azimuthal velocity plane, while they seem to follow the same diagonal ridges in the Galactic radial distribution of azimuthal velocities. Velocity ellipsoids in different age bins all show a clear anisotropy. The heating rate of the OC population is similar to that of field stars for the radial and azimuthal components, but it is significantly lower for the vertical component. The rotation curve drawn by our sample of clusters shows several dips that match the wiggles derived from nonaxisymmetric models of the Galaxy. From the computation of orbits, we obtain a clear dependence of the maximum height and eccentricity on age. Finally, the orbital characteristics of the sample of clusters as shown by the action variables follow the distribution of field stars. Abstract: (Abridged) We study the properties of anisotropic and axisymmetric velocity ellipsoids from maps of the gas velocity dispersion in nearby galaxies. This data allow us to measure the azimuthal-to-radial axis ratio of gas velocity ellipsoids, which is a useful tool to study the structure of gaseous orbits in the disk. We also present the first estimates of perturbations in gas velocity dispersion maps by applying an alternative model that considers isotropic and asymmetric random motions. High-quality velocity dispersion maps of the atomic medium at various angular resolutions of the nearby spiral galaxy Messier 33, are used to test the anisotropic and isotropic velocity models. The velocity dispersions of hundreds of individual molecular clouds are also analyzed. The HI velocity dispersion of M33 is systematically larger along the minor axis, and lower along the major axis. Isotropy is only possible if asymmetric motions are considered. Fourier transforms of the HI velocity dispersions reveal a bisymmetric mode which is mostly stronger than other asymmetric motions and aligned with the minor axis of the galaxy. Within the anisotropic and axisymmetric velocity model, the stronger bisymmetry is explained by a radial component that is larger than the azimuthal component of the ellipsoid of random motions, thus by gaseous orbits that are dominantly radial. The azimuthal anisotropy parameter is not strongly dependent on the choice of the vertical dispersion. The velocity anisotropy parameter of the molecular clouds is observed highly scattered. Perturbations such as HI spiral-like arms could be at the origin of the gas velocity anisotropy in M33. Further work is necessary to assess whether anisotropic velocity ellispsoids can also be invoked to explain the asymmetric gas random motions of other galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Context. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides accurate astrometry for about 1.6 million compact (QSO-like) extragalactic sources, 1.2 million of which have the best-quality five-parameter astrometric solutions., Aims. The proper motions of QSO-like sources are used to reveal a systematic pattern due to the acceleration of the solar systembarycentre with respect to the rest frame of the Universe. Apart from being an important scientific result by itself, the acceleration measured in this way is a good quality indicator of the Gaia astrometric solution., Methods. Theeffect of the acceleration was obtained as a part of the general expansion of the vector field of proper motions in vector spherical harmonics (VSH). Various versions of the VSH fit and various subsets of the sources were tried and compared to get the most consistent result and a realistic estimate of its uncertainty. Additional tests with the Gaia astrometric solution were used to get a better idea of the possible systematic errors in the estimate., Results. Our best estimate of the acceleration based on Gaia EDR3 is (2.32 +/- 0.16) x 10(-10) m s(-2) (or 7.33 +/- 0.51 km s(-1) Myr-1) towards alpha = 269.1 degrees +/- 5.4 degrees, delta = -31.6 degrees +/- 4.1 degrees, corresponding to a proper motion amplitude of 5.05 +/- 0.35 mu as yr(-1). This is in good agreement with the acceleration expected from current models of the Galactic gravitational potential. We expect that future Gaia data releases will provide estimates of the acceleration with uncertainties substantially below 0.1 mu as yr(-1).

Abstract: We analyse the eastern region of a $5^\circ\times5^\circ$ deep HI survey of the M81 group containing the dwarf galaxy IC 2574 and the HI complex HIJASS J1021+68, located between the dwarf and the M81 system. The data show that IC 2574 has an extended HI envelope that connects to HIJASS J1021+68 in the form of a collection of small clouds, but no evident connection has been found between IC 2574 and the central members of the M81 group. We argue, based on the morphology of the clouds forming HIJASS J1021+68 and its velocity distribution, that the complex is not a dark galaxy as previously suggested, but is instead a complex of clouds either stripped from, or falling onto the primordial HI envelope of IC 2574. We also use the deep HI observations to map the extended HI envelope around IC 2574 and, using a 3D tilted-ring model, we derive the rotation curve of the galaxy to a larger extent than has been done before. Combining the obtained rotation curve to higher resolution curves from the literature, we constrain the galaxy's dark matter halo parameters., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures. Abstract: SIGNALS, the Star formation, Ionized Gas, and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey, is a large observing programme designed to investigate massive star formation and HII regions in a sample of local extended galaxies. The programme will use the imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Over 355 h (54.7 nights) have been allocated beginning in fall 2018 for eight consecutive semesters. Once completed, SIGNALS will provide a statistically reliable laboratory to investigate massive star formation, including over 50 000 resolved HII regions: the largest, most complete, and homogeneous data base of spectroscopically and spatially resolved extragalactic HII regions ever assembled. For each field observed, three datacubes covering the spectral bands of the filters SN1 (363386 nm), SN2 (482-513 nm), and SN3 (647-685 nm) are gathered. The spectral resolution selected for each spectral band is 1000, 1000, and 5000, respectively. As defined, the project sample will facilitate the study of small-scale nebular physics and many other phenomena linked to star formation at a mean spatial resolution of similar to 20 pc. This survey also has considerable legacy value for additional topics, including planetary nebulae, diffuse ionized gas, and supernova remnants. Abstract: A 25 $\rm deg^2$ region, including the M81 complex (M81, M82, NGC 3077), NGC 2976 and IC2574, was mapped during ~3000 hours with the DRAO synthesis telescope. With a physical resolution of ~1 kpc, these observations allow us to probe a large region down to column density levels of ~$\rm 1\times10^{18}\, cm^{-2}$ over 16 $\rm km\, s^{-1}$, mapping the extent of the HI arm connecting the system and NGC 2976, and resolving the HI clouds adjacent to the arm. The observations also reveal a few clouds located between the system and IC 2574, probably tidally stripped from a past interaction between the two systems. Given the regular velocity distribution in the HI envelope of the system, we attempt and derive an idealised large-scale rotation curve of the system. We observe a flat trend for the rotation velocity of the overall system from 20 kpc out to 80 kpc, well beyond the outskirts of the M81 disk, although with asymmetries like a wiggle at the vicinity of M82. This supports the assumption that intergalactic gas and galaxies in the system participate to a large-scale ordered rotation motion which is dominated by M81. Also, our HI analysis of the group further supports the hypothesis that the galaxies forming the system moved closer from afar, in agreement with numerical simulations., 20 pages, 15 figures including an interactive 3D figure. Abstract: For the Local Group Scd galaxy M 33 this paper presents a multi-scale study of the relationship between the monochromatic star formation rate (SFR) estimator based on 12 $\mu$m emission and the total SFR estimator based on a combination of far-ultraviolet and 24 $\mu$m emission. We show the 12 $\mu$m emission to be a linear estimator of total SFR on spatial scales from 782 pc down to 49 pc, over almost four magnitudes in SFR. These results therefore extend to sub-kpc length scales the analogous results from other studies for global length scales. We use high-resolution HI and $^{12}\mathrm{CO}(J=2-1)$ image sets from the literature to compare the star formation to the neutral gas. For the full range of length scales we find well-defined power-law relationships between 12 $\mu$m-derived SFR surface densities and neutral gas surface densities. For the H$_\mathrm{2}$ gas component almost all correlations are consistent with being linear. No evidence is found for a breakdown in the star formation law at small length scales in M 33 reported by other authors. We show that the average star formation efficiency in M 33 is roughly $10^{-9}$ yr$^{-1}$ and that it remains constant down to giant molecular cloud length scales. Toomre and shear-based models of the star formation threshold are shown to inaccurately account for the star formation activity in the inner disc of M 33. Finally, we clearly show that the HI saturation limit of $\approx 9$ M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$ reported in the literature for other galaxies is not an intrinsic property of M 33 - it is systematically introduced as an artefact of spatially smoothing the data., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: The cosmic evolution of galaxies' neutral atomic gas content is a major science driver for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), as well as for its South African (MeerKAT) and Australian (ASKAP) precursors. Among the HI large survey programs (LSPs) planned for ASKAP and MeerKAT, the deepest and narrowest tier of the "wedding cake" will be defined by the combined L-band+UHF-band Looking At the Distant Universe with the MeerKAT Array (LADUMA) survey, which will probe HI in emission within a single "cosmic vuvuzela" that extends to z = 1.4, when the universe was only a third of its present age. Through a combination of individual and stacked detections (the latter relying on extensive multi-wavelength studies of the survey's target field), LADUMA will study the redshift evolution of the baryonic Tully--Fisher relation and the cosmic HI density, the variation of the HI mass function with redshift and environment, and the connection between HI content and galaxies' stellar properties (mass, age, etc.). The survey will also build a sample of OH megamaser detections that can be used to trace the cosmic merger history. This proceedings contribution provides a brief introduction to the survey, its scientific aims, and its technical implementation, deferring a more complete discussion for a future article after the implications of a recent review of MeerKAT LSP project plans are fully worked out.

Abstract: We analyze the kinematics of Andromeda's disk as a function of stellar age by using photometry from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey and spectroscopy from the Spectroscopic and Photometric Landscape of Andromeda's Stellar Halo (SPLASH) survey. We use HI 21-cm and CO ($\rm J=1 \rightarrow 0$) data to examine the difference between the deprojected rotation velocity of the gas and that of the stars. We divide the stars into four stellar age bins, from shortest lived to longest lived: massive main sequence stars (0.03 Gyr), more luminous intermediate mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (0.4 Gyr), less luminous intermediate mass AGB stars (2 Gyr), and low mass red giant branch stars (4 Gyr). There is a clear correlation between the offset of the stellar and the gas rotation velocity, or the asymmetric drift: the longer lived populations lag farther behind the gas than short lived populations. We also examine possible causes of the substructure in the rotation curves and find that the most significant cause of scatter in the rotation curves comes from the tilted ring model being an imperfect way to account for the multiple warps in Andromeda's disk., Comment: 30 pages, 24 figures, 2 tables; accepted to ApJ November 16, 2018

Abstract: Aims. The Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) on board the ESA satellite mission Gaia has no calibration device. Therefore, the radial velocity zero point needs to be calibrated with stars that are proved to be stable at a level of 300 m/s during the Gaia observations. Methods. We compiled a dataset of ~71000 radial velocity measurements from five high-resolution spectrographs. A catalogue of 4813 stars was built by combining these individual measurements. The zero point was established using asteroids. Results. The resulting catalogue has seven observations per star on average on a typical time baseline of six years, with a median standard deviation of 15 m/s. A subset of the most stable stars fulfilling the RVS requirements was used to establish the radial velocity zero point provided in Gaia Data Release 2. Abstract: As part of a long-term project to revisit the kinematics and dynamics of the large disc galaxies of the Local Group, we present the first deep, wide-field (42' x 56') 3D-spectroscopic survey of the ionized gas disc of Messier 33. Fabry-Perot interferometry has been used to map its Ha distribution and kinematics at unprecedented angular resolution ( 6.5 kpc. The reason for this discrepancy is not well understood. The velocity dispersion profile is relatively flat around 16 km/s, which is at the low end of velocity dispersions of nearby star-forming galactic discs. A strong relation is also found between the Ha velocity dispersion and the Ha intensity. Mass models were obtained using the Ha rotation curve but, as expected, the dark matter halo's parameters are not very well constrained since the optical rotation curve only extends out to 8 kpc.

Abstract: A new deep H i survey of the galaxy Messier 33 is presented, based on observations obtained at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory. We observe a perturbed outer gas distribution and kinematics in M33, and confirm the disk warping as a significant twist of the major axis of the velocity field, although no strong tilt is measured, in agreement with previous work. Evidence for a new low-brightness H i component with anomalous velocity is reported. It harbors a large velocity scatter, as its kinematics both exceeds and lags the rotation of the disk, and leaks in the forbidden velocity zone of apparent counterrotation. The observations also reveal wide and multiple-peak H i profiles that can be partly explained by crowded orbits in the framework of the warp model. Asymmetric motions are identified in the velocity field as possible signatures of a lopsided potential and the warp. The mass distribution modeling of the hybrid Hα–H i rotation curve favors a cuspy dark matter halo with a concentration in disagreement with the ΛCDM dark halo mass–concentration relationship. The total mass enclosed in 23 kpc is 8 10^10,M⊙, of which 11% are stars and gas. At the virial radius of the cuspy halo, the resulting total mass is 5 10^11, M⊙, but with a baryonic mass fraction of only 2%. This strongly suggests a more realistic radius encompassing the total mass of M33 that is well smaller than the virial radius of the halo, possibly comparable to the size of the H i disk.

Abstract: Understanding the nature of spiral structure in disk galaxies is one of the main, and still unsolved questions in galactic astronomy. However, theoretical works are proposing new testable predictions whose detection is becoming feasible with recent development in instrumentation. In particular, streaming motions along spiral arms are expected to induce azimuthal variations in the chemical composition of a galaxy at a given galactic radius. In this letter we analyse the gas content in NGC 6754 with VLT/MUSE data to characterise its 2D chemical composition and H$\alpha$ line-of-sight velocity distribution. We find that the trailing (leading) edge of the NGC 6754 spiral arms show signatures of tangentially-slower, radially-outward (tangentially-faster, radially-inward) streaming motions of metal-rich (poor) gas over a large range of radii. These results show direct evidence of gas radial migration for the first time. We compare our results with the gas behaviour in a $N$-body disk simulation showing spiral morphological features rotating with a similar speed as the gas at every radius, in good agreement with the observed trend. Abstract: Mass models of galactic disks traditionally rely on axisymmetric density and rotation curves, paradoxically acting as if their most remarkable asymmetric features, such as lopsidedness or spiral arms, were not important. In this article, we relax the axisymmetry approximation and introduce a methodology that derives 3D gravitational potentials of disk-like objects and robustly estimates the impacts of asymmetries on circular velocities in the disk midplane. Mass distribution models can then be directly fitted to asymmetric line-of-sight velocity fields. Applied to the grand-design spiral M99, the new strategy shows that circular velocities are highly nonuniform, particularly in the inner disk of the galaxy, as a natural response to the perturbed gravitational potential of luminous matter. A cuspy inner density profile of dark matter is found in M99, in the usual case where luminous and dark matter share the same center. The impact of the velocity nonuniformity is to make the inner profile less steep, although the density remains cuspy. On another hand, a model where the halo is core dominated and shifted by 2.2-2.5 kpc from the luminous mass center is more appropriate to explain most of the kinematical lopsidedness evidenced in the velocity field of M99. However, the gravitational potential of luminous baryons is not asymmetric enough to explain the kinematical lopsidedness of the innermost regions, irrespective of the density shape of dark matter. Abstract: The ellipsoid of stellar random motions is a fundamental ingredient of galaxy dynamics. Yet it has long been difficult to constrain this component in disks others than the Milky Way. This article presents the modeling of the azimuthal-to-radial axis ratio of the velocity ellipsoid of galactic disks from stellar dispersion maps using integral field spectroscopy data of the CALIFA survey. The measured azimuthal anisotropy is shown to be not strongly dependent on the assumed vertical-to-radial dispersion ratio of the ellipsoid. The anisotropy distribution shows a large diversity in the orbital structure of disk galaxies from tangential to radial stellar orbits. Globally, the orbits are isotropic in inner disk regions and become more radial as a function of radius, although this picture tends to depend on galaxy morphology and luminosity. The Milky Way orbital anisotropy profile measured from the Second Gaia Data Release is consistent with those of CALIFA galaxies. A new correlation is evidenced, linking the absolute magnitude or stellar mass of the disks to the azimuthal anisotropy. More luminous disks have more radial orbits and less luminous disks have isotropic and somewhat tangential orbits. This correlation is consistent with the picture in galaxy evolution in which orbits become more radial as the mass grows and is redistributed as a function of time. With the help of circular velocity curves, it is also shown that the epicycle theory fails to reproduce the diversity of the azimuthal anisotropy of stellar random motions, as it predicts only nearly radial orbits in the presence of flat curves. The origin of this conflict is yet to be identified. Abstract: New HI observations of Messier 31 (M31) obtained with the Effelsberg and Green Bank 100-m telescopes make it possible to measure the rotation curve of that galaxy out to ~35 kpc. Between 20 and 35 kpc, the rotation curve is nearly flat at a velocity of ~226 km/s. A model of the mass distribution shows that at the last observed velocity point, the minimum dark-to-luminous mass ratio is \~0.5 for a total mass of 3.4 10^11 Msol at R < 35 kpc. Abstract: The bibliographical compilation of stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) relying on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy started in the eighties with the so-called [Fe/H] catalogue, and was continued in 2010 with the PASTEL catalogue, which also includes determinations of Teff alone, based on various methods. Here we present an update of the PASTEL catalogue. The main journals and the CDS database have been surveyed to find relevant publications presenting new determinations of atmospheric parameters. As of February 2016, PASTEL includes 64082 determinations of either Teff or (Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) for 31401 stars, corresponding to 1142 bibliographical references. Abstract: (Abridged) The analysis of the rotation curves (RCs) of spiral galaxies provides an efficient diagnostic for studying the properties of dark matter halos and their relations with the baryonic material. We have modeled the RCs of galaxies from The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS) with the Einasto halo model, which has emerged as the best-fitting model of the halos arising in dissipationless cosmological N-body simulations. We find that the RCs are significantly better fit with the Einasto halo than with either a pseudo-isothermal sphere (Iso) or Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) halo models. In our best-fit models, the radius of density slope -2 and the density at this radius are highly correlated. The Einasto index, which controls the overall shape of the density profile, is near unity on average for intermediate and low mass halos. This is not in agreement with the predictions from LCDM simulations. The indices of the most massive halos are in rough agreement with those of cosmological simulations and appear correlated with the halo virial mass. We find that a typical Einasto density profile declines more strongly in its outermost parts than any of the Iso or NFW models whereas it is relatively shallow in its innermost regions. The core nature of those regions of halos thus extends the cusp-core controversy found for the NFW model with low surface density galaxies to the Einasto halo with more massive galaxies like those of THINGS. The L2C carriers of multiple GPS satellites have been used to trace out a nearly complete beam pattern out to 45 away from the main lobe centre for a horizontally mounted single EMBRACE tile. The beam was formed along its bore-sight direction, i.e., staring at the local sky zenith. The result is very close to design specifications although there is evidence for at least one side lobe rising above the achieved noise level. We have also used the older L2 carrier to estimate the system temperature, although an exact figure in addition requires knowledge of the aperture efficiency. © 2018 Sissa Medialab Srl.

Abstract: [Abridged] We present a new deep 21-cm survey of the Andromeda galaxy, based on high resolution observations performed with the Synthesis Telescope and the 26-m antenna at DRAO. The HI distribution and kinematics of the disc are analyzed and basic dynamical properties are given. The rotation curve is measured out to 38 kpc, showing a nuclear peak, a dip around 4 kpc, two distinct flat parts and an increase in the outermost regions. Except for the innermost regions, the axisymmetry of the gas rotation is very good. A very strong warp of the HI disc is evidenced. The central regions appear less inclined than the average disc inclination, while the outer regions appear more inclined. Mass distribution models by LCDM NFW, Einasto or pseudo-isothermal dark matter halos with baryonic components are presented. They fail to reproduce the exact shape of the rotation curve. No significant differences are measured between the various shapes of halo. The dynamical mass of M31 enclosed within a radius of 38 kpc is (4.7 +/- 0.5) x 10^11 Msol. The dark matter component is almost 4 times more massive than the baryonic mass inside this radius. A total mass of 1.0 x 10^12 Msol is derived inside the virial radius. New HI structures are discovered in the datacube, like the detection of up to five HI components per spectrum, which is very rarely seen in other galaxies. The most remarkable new HI structures are thin HI spurs and an external arm in the disc outskirts. A relationship between these spurs and outer stellar clumps is evidenced. The external arm is 32 kpc long, lies on the far side of the galaxy and has no obvious counterpart on the other side of the galaxy. Its kinematics clearly differs from the outer adjacent disc. Abstract: We report on an estimate of the bar pattern speed Omega_p for the low surface brightness spiral galaxy UGC 628. We applied the Tremaine-Weinberg method to high resolution Halpha velocity and integrated emission maps of this dark matter dominated galaxy. Observations were made at the CFHT using the optical Fabry-Perot interferometer, FaNTOmM. The Tremaine-Weinberg method estimates a bar pattern speed of (11.3 +/- 2.0) km/s/kpc for UGC 628, which is among the lowest values found for a spiral galaxy. The corotation radius Rc of the bar and the gaseous disc is Rc = 9.8 (+2.9/-2.0) kpc, implying a ratio R = Rc/Ab of 2.0 (+0.5/-0.3), where Ab is the bar radius. Abstract: The ionized gas kinematics of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC 4254 (Messier 99) is analyzed by an harmonic decomposition of the velocity field into Fourier coefficients. The aims of this study are to measure the kinematical asymmetries of Virgo cluster galaxies and to connect them to the environment. Abstract: The morphology and stellar populations of low-luminosity early-type galaxies in clusters have until now been limited to a few relatively nearby clusters such as Virgo or Fornax. Scenarii for the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies in clusters are therefore not well constrained. We investigate here the morphology and stellar populations of low-luminosity galaxies in the relaxed cluster Abell 496 (z=0.0330). Abstract: We study two dimensional Fabry-Perot interferometric observations of the nearby face-on late-type spiral galaxy, NGC 628. We investigate the role of the individual HII regions together with the large-scale gravitational mechanisms which govern star formation and overall evolution in spiral galaxies. Our kinematical analysis (reinforced by literature maps in HI and CO at lower angular resolution) enables us to verify the presence of an inner rapidly rotating inner disk-like component which we attribute to long term secular evolution of the large-scale spiral arms and oval structure. We find that gas is falling in from the outer parts towards the bluer central regions. This could be an early phase in the formation of a pseudo-bulge. We find signatures of radial motions caused by an m=2 perturbation, which are likely to be responsible for the inflow of material forming the circumnuclear ring and the rapidly rotating inner structure., To appear in the proceedings for IAU symposium 241. Abstract: Aims: ``Compact ellipticals'' are so rare that a search for M32 analogs is needed to ensure the very existence of this class. Methods: We report here the discovery of A496cE, a M32 twin in the cluster Abell 496, located in the halo of the central cD. Results: Based on CFHT and HST imaging we show that the light profile of A496cE requires a two component fit: a Sersic bulge and an exponential disc. The spectrum of A496cE obtained with the ESO-VLT FLAMES/Giraffe spectrograph can be fit by a stellar synthesis spectrum dominated by old stars, with high values of [Mg/Fe] and velocity dispersion. Conclusions: The capture of A496cE by the cD galaxy and tidal stripping of most of its disc are briefly discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Abstract: We describe briefly the Data-Reduction of the VLT fiber-fed multi-object GIRAFFE spectrograph - part of the VLT FLAMES facility. We focus on specific features of GIRAFFE - the simultaneous wavelength calibration - and their impact on the data-reduction strategy. We describe the implementation of the global physical model and we compare the results obtained with the simulated, laboratory and preliminary data. We discuss the influence of critical parameters, the overall accuracy of the wavelength solution, and the stability and the robustness of the global model approach . We address the accuracy of radial velocity measurements illustrated by solar spectra obtained during the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe.

Abstract: We employed the {\it VISTA near-infrared $YJK_\mathrm{s}$ survey of the Magellanic System} (VMC), to analyse the $Y,\,J,\,K_\mathrm{s}$ light curves of $\delta$ Cepheid stars (DCEPs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our sample consists of 4408 objects accounting for 97 per cent of the combined list of OGLE\,IV and {\it Gaia}\,DR2 DCEPs. We determined a variety of period-luminosity ($PL$) and period-Wesenheit $PW$ relationships for Fundamental (F) and First Overtone (1O) pulsators. We discovered for the first time a break in these relationships for 1O DCEPs at $P$=0.58 d. We derived relative individual distances for DCEPs in the LMC with a precision of $\sim$1 kpc, calculating the position angle of the line of nodes and inclination of the galaxy: $\theta$=145.6$\pm$1.0 deg and $i$=25.7$\pm$0.4 deg. The bar and the disc are seen under different viewing angles. We calculated the ages of the pulsators, finding two main episodes of DCEP formation lasting $\sim$40 Myr which happened 93 and 159 Myr ago. Likely as a result of its past interactions with the SMC, the LMC shows a non-planar distribution, with considerable structuring: the bar is divided into two distinct portions, the eastern and the western displaced by more than 1 kpc from each other. Similar behaviour is shown by the spiral arms. The LMC disc appears "flared" and thick, with a disc scale height of $h\sim 0.97$ kpc. This feature can be explained by strong tidal interactions with the Milky Way and/or the Small Magellanic Cloud or past merging events with now disrupted LMC satellites., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS. 40. Asymmetric Drift in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) as a Function of Stellar Age.

Abstract: We analyze the kinematics of Andromeda’s disk as a function of stellar age by using photometry from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury survey and spectroscopy from the Spectroscopic and Photometric Landscape of Andromeda’s Stellar Halo survey. We use H i 21 cm and CO () data to examine the difference between the deprojected rotation velocity of the gas and that of the stars. We divide the stars into four stellar age bins, from shortest lived to longest lived: massive main-sequence stars (0.03 Gyr), more luminous intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (0.4 Gyr), less luminous intermediate-mass AGB stars (2 Gyr), and low-mass red giant branch stars (4 Gyr). There is a clear correlation between the offset of the stellar and the gas rotation velocity, or the asymmetric drift: the longer-lived populations lag farther behind the gas than short-lived populations. We also examine possible causes of the substructure in the rotation curves (RCs) and find that the most significant cause of scatter in the RCs comes from the tilted ring model being an imperfect way to account for the multiple warps in Andromeda’s disk. A.; Vreeswijk, P.; Woudt, P. A., Aims. We present the results of three commissioning H I observations obtained with the MeerKAT radio telescope. These observations make up part of the preparation for the forthcoming MHONGOOSE nearby galaxy survey, which is a MeerKAT large survey project that will study the accretion of gas in galaxies and the link between gas and star formation. Methods. We used the available H I data sets, along with ancillary data at other wavelengths, to study the morphology of the MHONGOOSE sample galaxy, ESO 302-G014, which is a nearby gas-rich dwarf galaxy. Results. We find that ESO 302-G014 has a lopsided, asymmetric outer disc with a low column density. In addition, we find a tail or filament of H I clouds extending away from the galaxy, as well as an isolated H I cloud some 20 kpc to the south of the galaxy. We suggest that these features indicate a minor interaction with a low-mass galaxy. Optical imaging shows a possible dwarf galaxy near the tail, but based on the current data, we cannot confirm any association with ESO 302-G014. Nonetheless, an interaction scenario with some kind of low-mass companion is still supported by the presence of a significant amount of molecular gas, which is almost equal to the stellar mass, and a number of prominent stellar clusters, which suggest recently triggered star formation. Conclusions. These data show that MeerKAT produces exquisite imaging data. The forthcoming full-depth survey observations of ESO 302-G014 and other sample galaxies will, therefore, offer insights into the fate of neutral gas as it moves from the intergalactic medium onto galaxies. © ESO 2020., It is a pleasure to thank the MeerKAT commissioning team without whom this paper would not have been possible.
