Abstract

This article is a systematic review and meta-analysis that evaluates the effectiveness of atmospheric pressure cold plasma decontamination techniques for packaging materials. Abstract

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most common type of gynecological tumor, presenting poor prognosis at diagnosis and with recurrences being frequently observed. Reactive species generated by physical plasma and transferred into liquids have shown promising results in cancer therapy. Recently, Ringer's lactate solution was exposed to plasma showing selective anticancer activity on EOC cells. In this work, we compared the effect of plasma treatment, using the kINPen plasma jet, on Ringer's saline and Ringer's lactate solution. These two plasma-treated liquids were analyzed chemically by quantifying reactive species and the extent of lactate oxidation. The biological efficiency of the plasma-treated liquids was explored in EOC cells. Abstract

Finding proper strategies to control plasma polymerization processes is a crucial aspect to produce thin films with tailored characteristics. In this work, the validity of the Yasuda parameter W/FM (W: discharge power and FM: precursor feed rate) as a controlling parameter for a polymerization process assisted by an atmospheric pressure single electrode plasma jet and the aerosolized fluorinated silane precursor trimethoxy(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl)silane is demonstrated. The properties of thin films deposited under different W/FM values are discussed using attenuated total reflectance—Fourier transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR) spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle (WCA) measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results suggest the presence of two deposition domains as a function of W/FM (an energy‐deficient domain and a monomer‐deficient domain), each inducing coatings with different chemical and physical properties. Furthermore, coatings deposited under the same W/FM values exhibit similar characteristics regardless of the power and feed rate values adopted. Considering the potential use of the deposited coatings to increase the antiadhesive properties of implantable medical devices, preliminary results on coatings' antiadhesive activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are presented. Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the use of a cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) source in a clinically realistic endodontic procedure to enhance the bond strength of a dental adhesive in root canal restoration. Materials and Methods: CAP was generated by a handheld DBD-jet prototype specifically designed for biomedical applications. Extracted monoradicular teeth were standardized through crown sectioning and root canal shaping before being embedded in epoxy resin cylinders using a custom molding procedure designed to ensure the accurate alignment of the specimens. Afterwards, the dentin surface was conditioned according to different protocols including (or not, in controls) chelating agents (EDTA or IP6) and CAP treatment (180 s). Then a self-etch adhesive was applied, followed by a luting material to seal the root canal. Both materials were light cured. Tooth sections were obtained from coronal and middle portions of the root canal, and the push-out test was used to evaluate the bond strength between the adhesive and dentin. Results: Push-out results demonstrated that plasma treatment greatly improved (> twofold) the mechanical properties of the adhesive-dentin interface along the whole length of the root canal. Contact angle measurements and SEM analyses showed that plasma treatment facilitated adhesive permeation into dentinal tubules, hence enhancing the effects of the bonding procedure. Conclusions: Although investigations on long-term bond stability after CAP treatment and clinical studies are required, the present study indicates that CAP devices may be useful in clinical endodontic treatment. Abstract

Bioaerosols (aerosolized particles with biological origin) are strongly suspected to play a significant role in the transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), especially in closed indoor environments. Thus, control technologies capable of effectively inactivating bioaerosols are urgently needed. In this regard, cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) can represent a suitable option, thanks to its ability to produce reactive species, which can exert antimicrobial action. In this study, results; on the total inactivation of SARS‐CoV‐2 contained in bioaerosols treated using CAP generated in air are reported, demonstrating the possible use of CAP systems for the control of SARS‐CoV‐2 diffusion through bioaerosols. Abstract

Atmospheric pressure non-equilibrium plasma treatments of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF) solutions and electrospun Li-ion separators are implemented to improve fiber morphology and increase electrolyte uptake. Plasma pre-treatment of PVdF solutions increased the viscosity and induced a morphological change of polymer chains, enabling the production of defect-free mats with improved mechanical properties compared to those produced from non pre-treated solutions. The post-treatment of the electrospun separator induced a chemical modification of the PVdF surface and an increase of electrolyte uptake. A synergistic effect between the plasma treatments is reported: the electrolyte uptake of the pre&post-treated separators is about 1200%, ten times larger than that of commercial Celgard separators.

Abstract

A single step process for the deposition of nanocomposite coatings with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded in a plasma-polymerized polyacrylic acid (pPAA) matrix and performed using a non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma jet is presented. Acrylic acid (AA) and AgNPs dispersed in ethanol (EtOH) are used as precursors and are separately injected in the plasma region directly; Ar is used as plasma gas and also as carrier gas for both precursors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ATR-FTIR analysis show the deposition of a micrometric pPAA coating on the polyethylene (PE) film used as substrate; AgNPs embedded in the polymeric matrix are visible in SEM pictures and their presence is confirmed by XPS and EDS analysis. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) also highlights a high retention of carboxylic groups in the pPAA chemical structure and the surface oxidation of AgNPs. Preliminary results of the antibacterial activity of the co-deposited coatings are presented.

In this study, two different cold atmospheric‐pressure plasmas are used for the production of plasma‐activated water (PAW). To evaluate the effectiveness of PAW as a possible means to control plant diseases, grapevines in an open field and a greenhouse are treated, evaluating qualitative and quantitative yield parameters, phytoplasma presence, and gene expression. The results show the capability of PAW to enhance plant defense mechanisms and, as demonstrated in the field trials, confirm its ability to improve the health status of the treated plants. Abstract

Atmospheric non-equilibrium plasma is drawing interest as a promising tool for cancer treatment due to its blend of physical and chemical components that can exert anti-tumor effects. In this work, we investigate the effects of plasma treatment, performed by means of a wand electrode DBD driven by nanosecond high voltage pulses, on the viability, proliferation, and cell-cycle distribution of cells of mouse lymphoma. Results for direct treatment, with cell exposed to plasma while suspended in culture medium, and indirect treatment, where cells were added to culture medium previously activated by plasma treatment, are compared. A qualitative characterization by means of high-speed and iCCD imaging of the plasma discharges produced for the different operating conditions adopted in biological experiments, as well as a semi-quantitative study of the reactive species produced by plasma treatment in the culture medium, are also presented.
