Abstract: Research assessing personality traits and religiosity across cultures has typically neglected variation across religious affiliations and has been limited to a small number of personality traits. This study examines the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and their facets, two theoretically distinct measures of religiosity, and twelve other personality traits across seven religious affiliations and 61 countries/regions. The proportion of participants following a religion varied substantially across countries (e.g., Indonesia = 99%; Estonia = 7%). Both measures of religiosity were related to agreeableness, conscientiousness, happiness, and fairness; however; relations with religiosity as a social axiom were stronger and less variable across religious affiliations. Additionally, personality-religiosity links were more robust in low-development, high-conflict, and collectivist nations.

Abstract: People in economically advantaged nations tend to evaluate their life as more positive overall and report greater well-being than people in less advantaged nations. But how does positivity manifest in the daily life experiences of individuals around the world? The present study asked 15,244 college students from 62 nations, in 42 languages, to describe a situation they experienced the previous day using the Riverside Situational Q-sort (RSQ). Using expert ratings, the overall positivity of each situation was calculated for both nations and individuals. The positivity of the average situation in each nation was strongly related to the economic development of the nation as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). For individuals’ daily experiences, the economic status of their nation also predicted the positivity of their experience, even more than their family socioeconomic status. Further analyses revealed the specific characteristics of the average situations for higher HDI nations that make their experiences more positive. Higher HDI was associated with situational experiences involving humor, socializing with others, and the potential to express emotions and fantasies. Lower HDI was associated with an increase in the presence of threats, blame, and hostility, as well as situational experiences consisting of family, religion, and money. Despite the increase in a few negative situational characteristics in lower HDI countries, the overall average experience still ranged from neutral to slightly positive, rather than negative, suggesting that greater HDI may not necessarily increase positive experiences but rather decrease negative experiences. The results illustrate how national economic status influences the lives of individuals even within a single instance of daily life, with large and powerful consequences when accumulated across individuals within each nation.

Abstract: Depletion of conventional energy sources has led to the rise of non-conventional and green energy sources. Among all the sources of green energy, solar energy is one of the most popular and convenient sources of energy. During summers and winters, an ample amount of solar electricity can be generated, while the rainy season reduces the efficiency of the solar power plant. To utilise the solar power plant at its fullest, we have to utilise it in the Monsoon as well. Another huge problem faced by the society these days is the water crisis. Rainwater harvesting can help to meet the water needs of the society, but rainwater harvesting plants remain inefficient during other seasons of the year. Abstract: People in economically advantaged nations tend to evaluate their life as more positive overall and report greater well-being than people in less advantaged nations. But how does positivity manifest in the daily life experiences of individuals around the world? The present study asked 15,244 college students from 62 nations, in 42 languages, to describe a situation they experienced the previous day using the Riverside Situational Q-sort (RSQ). Using expert ratings, the overall positivity of each situation was calculated for both nations and individuals. The positivity of the average situation in each nation was strongly related to the economic development of the nation as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). For individuals’ daily experiences, the economic status of their nation also predicted the positivity of their experience, even more than their family socioeconomic status. Further analyses revealed the specific characteristics of the average situations for higher HDI nations that make their experiences more positive. Higher HDI was associated with situational experiences involving humor, socializing with others, and the potential to express emotions and fantasies. Lower HDI was associated with an increase in the presence of threats, blame, and hostility, as well as situational experiences consisting of family, religion, and money. Despite the increase in a few negative situational characteristics in lower HDI countries, the overall average experience still ranged from neutral to slightly positive, rather than negative, suggesting that greater HDI may not necessarily increase positive experiences but rather decrease negative experiences. The results illustrate how national economic status influences the lives of individuals even within a single instance of daily life, with large and powerful consequences when accumulated across individuals within each nation.

Abstract: Abstract: Retirement brings a major transition in life. This transition may affect a retired person’s physical, mental, and social health and lead to psychological problems. This study investigated the effects of Yoga on the well-being of retired men. It was a nonrandomized study involving 90 retired men aged 60–75 years following purposive sampling. The 14-week intervention included a daily session of 90 minutes at a yoga training center in Pune, India. Each session comprised light exercises, loosening, breathing exercises, relaxation, and meditation. Ryff’s validated scale was used to measure psychological well-being in six domains. Abstract: Recent research conducted largely in the United States suggests that most people would like to change one or more of their personality traits. Yet almost no research has investigated the degree to which and in what ways volitional personality change (VPC), or individuals' active efforts toward personality change, might be common around the world. Through a custom-built website, 13,278 college student participants from 55 countries and one of a larger country (Hong Kong, S.A.R.) using 42 different languages reported whether they were currently trying to change their personality and, if so, what they were trying to change. Around the world, 60.40% of participants reported that they are currently trying to change their personalities, with the highest percentage in Thailand (81.91%) and the lowest in Kenya (21.41%). Among those who provide open-ended responses to the aspect of personality they are trying to change, the most common goals were to increase emotional stability (29.73%), conscientiousness (19.71%), extraversion (15.94%), and agreeableness (13.53%). In line with previous research, students who are trying to change any personality trait tend to have relatively low levels of emotional stability and happiness. Moreover, those with relatively low levels of socially desirable traits reported attempting to increase what they lacked. These principal findings were generalizable around the world. Abstract: Objective: The current exploratory study sought to examine dispositional optimism, or the general expectation for positive outcomes, around the world. Method: Dispositional optimism and possible correlates were assessed across 61 countries (N = 15,185; mean age = 21.92; 77% female). Mean-level differences in optimism were computed along with their relationships with individual and country-level variables. Results: Worldwide, mean optimism levels were above the midpoint of the scale. Perhaps surprisingly, country-level optimism was negatively related to gross domestic product per capita, population density, and democratic norms and positively related to income inequality and perceived corruption. However, country-level optimism was positively related to projected economic improvement. Individual-level optimism was positively related to individual well-being within every country, although this relationship was less strong in countries with challenging economic and social circumstances. Conclusions: While individuals around the world are generally optimistic, societal characteristics appear to affect the degree to which their optimism is associated with psychological well-being, sometimes in seemingly anomalous ways.

Abstract: Recent research conducted largely in the United States suggests that most people would like to change one or more of their personality traits. Yet almost no research has investigated the degree to which and in what ways volitional personality change (VPC), or individuals’ active efforts toward personality change, might be common around the world. Through a custom-built website, 13,278 college student participants from 55 countries and one of a larger country (Hong Kong, S.A.R.) using 42 different languages reported whether they were currently trying to change their personality and, if so, what they were trying to change. Around the world, 60.40% of participants reported that they are currently trying to change their personalities, with the highest percentage in Thailand (81.91%) and the lowest in Kenya (21.41%). Among those who provide open-ended responses to the aspect of personality they are trying to change, the most common goals were to increase emotional stability (29.73%), conscientiousness (19.71%), extraversion (15.94%), and agreeableness (13.53%). In line with previous research, students who are trying to change any personality trait tend to have relatively low levels of emotional stability and happiness. Moreover, those with relatively low levels of socially desirable traits reported attempting to increase what they lacked. These principal findings were generalizable around the world

Abstract: What does it mean to be happy? The vast majority of cross-cultural studies on happiness have employed a Western-origin, or "WEIRD" measure of happiness that conceptualizes it as a self-centered (or "independent"), high-arousal emotion. However, research from Eastern cultures, particularly Japan, conceptualizes happiness as including an interpersonal aspect emphasizing harmony and connectedness to others. Following a combined emicetic approach (Cheung, van de Vijver & Leong, 2011), we assessed the cross-cultural applicability of a measure of independent happiness developed in the US (Subjective Happiness Scale; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999) and a measure of interdependent happiness developed in Japan (Interdependent Happiness Scale; Hitokoto & Uchida, 2015), with data from 63 countries representing 7 sociocultural regions. Results indicate that the schema of independent happiness was more coherent in more WEIRD countries. In contrast, the coherence of interdependent happiness was unrelated to a country's "WEIRD-ness." Reliabilities of both happiness measures were lowest in African and Middle Eastern countries, suggesting these two conceptualizations of happiness may not be globally comprehensive. Overall, while the two measures had many similar correlates and properties, the self-focused concept of independent happiness is "WEIRD-er" than interdependent happiness, suggesting cross-cultural researchers should attend to both conceptualizations.

Abstract: Objective: The current study seeks to replicate and extend principal findings reported in The World at 7:00, a project that examined the psychological experience of situations in 20 countries. Method: Data were collected from participants in 62 countries (N = 15,318), recruited from universities by local collaborators to complete the study via a custom-built website using 42 languages. Results: Several findings of the previous study were replicated. The average reported situational experience around the world was mildly positive. The same countries tended to be most alike in reported situational experience (r =.60) across the two studies, among the countries included in both. As in the previous study, the homogeneity of reported situational experience was significantly greater within than between countries, although the difference was small. The previously reported exploratory finding that negative aspects of situations varied more across countries than positive aspects did not replicate. Correlations between aspects of reported situational experience and country-level average value scores, personality, and demographic variables were largely similar between the two studies. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of cross-cultural situational research and the need to replicate its results, and highlight the complex interplay of culture and situational experience.

Abstract: What does it mean to be happy? The vast majority of cross-cultural studies on happiness have employed a Western-origin, or “WEIRD” measure of happiness that conceptualizes it as a self-centered (or “independent”), high-arousal emotion. However, research from Eastern cultures, particularly Japan, conceptualizes happiness as including an interpersonal aspect emphasizing harmony and connectedness to others. Following a combined emic-etic approach (Cheung, van de Vijver & Leong, 2011), we assessed the cross-cultural applicability of a measure of independent happiness developed in the US (Subjective Happiness Scale; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999) and a measure of interdependent happiness developed in Japan (Interdependent Happiness Scale; Hitokoto & Uchida, 2015), with data from 63 countries representing 7 sociocultural regions. Results indicate that the schema of independent happiness was more coherent in more WEIRD countries. In contrast, the coherence of interdependent happiness was unrelated to a country’s “WEIRD-ness.” Reliabilities of both happiness measures were lowest in African and Middle Eastern countries, suggesting these two conceptualizations of happiness may not be globally comprehensive. Overall, while the two measures had many similar correlates and properties, the self-focused concept of independent happiness is “WEIRD-er” than interdependent happiness, suggesting cross-cultural researchers should attend to both conceptualizations.

Mean-level differences in optimism were computed along with their relationships with individual and country-level variables.ResultsWorldwide, mean optimism levels were above the midpoint of the scale. Perhaps surprisingly, country-level optimism was negatively related to gross domestic product per capita, population density, and democratic norms and positively related to income inequality and perceived corruption. However, country-level optimism was positively related to projected economic improvement. Individual-level optimism was positively related to individual well-being within every country, although this relationship was less strong in countries with challenging economic and social circumstances.ConclusionsWhile individuals around the world are generally optimistic, societal characteristics appear to affect the degree to which their optimism is associated with psychological well-being, sometimes in seemingly anomalous ways.

Abstract: Midlife is a known period for emotional transitions and vulnerability. Specially for many women who choose to be home makers it is even more challenging due to the very nature of their way of life. They may feel little abandoned by spouse and children who earlier are highly dependent on them. Also health issues start popping up and a guilt of not having fulfilled the potentials can be troublesome. All this influences the emotional and practical life of such women. This leads to issues of psychological well-being. The present paper discusses how an in depth training based on rational-emotive behavioral approach positively influenced the psychological well-being of 35 women in midlife. Qualitative analysis of the focused group discussions with these women has uncovered the inner elegant change in their thought processes enhancing their psychological well-being. Abstract: This study aims at comparison between the quality of life and Life satisfaction of the paramilitary forces in CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), ITBP (Indo Tibetan Border Police) as well as the state police force (Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh). The total sample of 744 was collected by purposive sampling method within clusters. The tools used were Comprehensive Quality of Life scale (Robert A. Cummins 1997) and Life Satisfaction Scale (LSS), developed at Jnana Prabodhini’s Institute of Psychology (2001). Data was analyzed using ANOVA (One Way) for group comparisons. In the overall factual quality of Life (F-QOL), significant differences were found on the dimension of health, productivity, safety, intimacy, emotional well-being, material well-being and place in community. Material Well Being and place in community were considerably low for all the three groups. For satisfaction dimension of quality of Life (S-QOL), significant differences were found on all the dimensions of Cummins’ QOL. Though score on material well-being seems to be low on factual level it is not reflected in perceived satisfaction with the same. While the factual dimension of safety is at a relatively better position in all the three dimensions, the respective perceived satisfaction seems to be very low in CISF and State Police. In the different dimensions of Life Satisfaction, few significant differences are obtained on economic, socio spiritual and total life satisfaction scores. ITBP is the highest on total or composite satisfaction, followed by CISF and then State Police. The findings have been studied under the light of relevant literature.

Abstract: Family is regarded as the first and one of the most influential institutions to shape the life of an individual. Various studies have pointed out the significance of Family Environment in maintaining Psychological Well-Being of its members. With the changing socio-economic, cultural milieu, it's necessary to understand relationship of Psychological Well-Being of young adults and their family environment. Early adulthood is an important transient phase of life where youth are in stage of forming their independent identity and their relations with other family members become complex. This study explores relation between Psychological Well-Being and Family Environment of college students. The data is collected from 433 students with mean age 18.7 years from various colleges in Pune city. The sample consisted of 245 females and 188 males. The tools used in this study were Carol Ryff's Psychological Well-Being scale and Family Environment scale by Dr. Bhatiya and Chaddha. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the relationship of Psychological Well-Being with Family Environment differs remarkably in young adulthood than in childhood. Dimensions of Family Environment were significantly but negatively related to dimensions of Psychological Well-Being in college students. Expression dimension alone was a significant predictor and accounted for 7.9% of total Psychological Well-Being variance. The results imply college students' need to have enough expressive freedom in the family and simultaneously to detach from the family and explore their world freely. This has implications in counseling the young adults as well as their parents for enhancing their Psychological Well-Being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

23. Effect of Comprehensive Child Development Program (CCDP) on cognitive and interpersonal responses among middle aged children.

Abstract: Middle childhood is an important developmental phase which contributes to the foundations of cognitive and interpersonal abilities that will lead to a productive and fulfilling adult life. This study explores various aspects of cognitive and interpersonal responses among children between ages 7-12 years from Pune. Total 1107 children (574 boys & 533 girls) participated in Comprehensive Child Development Program (during 2012-15) which comprised of seven day intervention (duration of 35 clock hours). This intervention was based on Guilford's SOI model (Guilford, 1967) and assessment was done using Behavior Observations and Rating Checklist. As the data was non-normal, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used to test the gains in scores. Out of total 10 aspects, significant differences were found on all ten aspects at 0.001 levels with large or nearly large effect sizes. Abstract: The research aims at exploring and comparing the marital satisfaction and emotional intelligence of people between age 25-65. Tools used were namely Marital Satisfaction Scale (MSS) and Exploring Emotional Abilities (EEA). A fairly representative data of 316 respondents was collected from Maharashtra, India. The analysis indicates a significant gender difference on certain areas of emotional intelligence, namely, openness to criticism, self management and empathy. A significant gender difference is also noted on two areas of marital satisfaction, namely, sexual relations and sharing household responsibilities, which can be traced to the socio-cultural influences. 25. From youth to elderly: A study of quality of life and psychological well-being.

Abstract: Quality of Life (QOL) and Psychological Well-being (PWB) are dynamic constructs. Various social, cultural and environmental factors influence an individual's experience of the quality of his life and well-being at any particular point in time. This study investigates the role of age in determining people's QOL and PWB. So, four age groups namely 20-29,30-39,40-59 and 60-and above have been compared with respect to their Quality of Life (factual) and Psychological Well-being. Comprehensive Quality of Life Scale by Robert Cummins (1997) and Ryffs Scale of Psychological Well-being constructed by Carol Ryff (1995) have been used. Total 330 urban participants were included in the study. One Way ANOVA was used to analyze the results. On Quality of Life (only the factual domain), significant differences were found on Material well-being, Health, Productivity, Safety and Total factual Quality of life. On Psychological Well-being, four age groups differed significantly on positive relations with others, environmental mastery, personal growth and total psychological well-being. 26. Role of dispositional gratitude and authenticity in emotional intelligence among late adolescent boys and girls.

Abstract: This study investigated the role of dispositional gratitude and authenticity in emotional intelligence among late adolescent boys and girls separately, as the previous research shows that there is gender difference on these variables. The prevalence of adolescent's emotional issues has increased in the last decade. The purpose of this study was to understand characteristics about gratitude and authenticity that contribute to emotional intelligence and whether there is any gender difference in the factors that contribute to EI. Method: Participants were 222jumor college students from Pune (123 girls and 99 boys), respondents completed self-report questionnaires about gratitude, authenticity and emotional intelligence. Results Preliminary correlation analysis showed that EI (r=.300**) was correlated positively to Gratitude and Authenticity (r=.048) in boys. EI (r= .336**) was correlated positively to Gratitude and Authenticity (r=.164) in girls. A subscale of gratitude i.e. social appreciation significantly influencing EI in boys as well for girls. Social Appreciation accounted uniquely for approximately 9% of the variance (R2 =. 10, adjusted R2=.09 for (p < .01)) for boys. Social Appreciation received the strongest weight in the model. Predicted positively to EI, accounting for approximately ll% of the variance (R2 = .12, AR2=.ll (p<,001).**p<.001.). The results were discussed in the light of related literature. Abstract: Relationships are vital source of motivation and satisfaction for a human being. Research indicates that quality of intimate relationships has a profound impact on an individual's mental health and general quality of life. It is observed that increasing relationship problems are not only challenging a person's mental health but are also disturbing the social fabric at large. Family being the basic unit of social structure is getting damaged beyond repair due to relationship storms. It may be too late to recognize and revert the losses unless expert guidance and intervention on an emergency basis. The five factor model of relationship building is thus proposed in the present paper titled 'Enhancement of relationships for positive mental health'. 29. Youth, Sexuality and Reproductive Health Education.

Abstract: This paper focuses on an effort to shape attitudes of youth for effective population management and gender sensitization through a scientifically planned and executed education program in Sexuality and health for Indian youth ages 14-19(total N= 540). Young people need access to information about the consequences of becoming sexually active including the risk of teenage pregnancy, and other health hazards such as the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. It is important to provide clear, scientifically accurate and gender sensitive information to young people as they enter adolescence. Population is an issue of concern around the world, particularly in the third world where limited resources may fail to meet the growing needs. The challenge is to make the best possible use of existing human resources. This experimental study shows how to teach healthy attitudes towards sexuality through condensed or spread out interventions. We used the: 'Stepping into Youth" - knowledge test, attitude scale and gender concepts scale. We found a significant positive change in the knowledge and attitude and a positive but not significant change in the gender concepts irrespective of the treatment type or age groups. It indicates that different age groups are sensitive to special areas of sexuality showing that shaping attitudes of youth can be an effective way of population management and gender sensitization which can be tailor made as per cultural needs. 30. An Exploration into Premarital Expectations of Youth across Gender.

Abstract: A decision regarding marriage is a crucial, life-changing experience. This study reveals the expectations of today's youth and the gender differences regarding marital partners and marital life. A sample of 135 youth aged 20-35 years was selected for the study. The analysis indicates that there is an increasing trend towards openness in choice of partners. Emotional bonding between partners is of paramount importance. Quality time is valued more than mere quantity of time spent with each other. Marriage is per-ceived as a commitment to family--not just to a single person--but at the same time independence in daily matters is a major criteria for fulfillment whether one is staying in a joint household, or not.
