The small bodies in the Kuiper Belt region of the distant Solar System are leftovers from planet formation. Their orbital distribution today tells us about how giant planets migrated, while their surface properties, shapes, and sizes tell us about formation processes and collision rates. Probing these intrinsic properties requires a careful understanding of the observational biases that are a part of any telescopic survey that discovers small bodies. While many of the details of giant planet migration are now understood due to careful comparison between de-biased discoveries in the Kuiper Belt and computational simulations, some discoveries have orbits that are still not easy to explain. In this work, we investigate the effects of H2 on the physical properties of Fe25Pd75. Broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy revealed a significant FMR peak shift induced by H2 absorption for the FCC phased Fe25Pd75. The peak shifted towards higher applied fields, which is contrary to what was previously observed for CoPd alloys. Additionally, we conducted structural and magneto-optical Kerr ellipsometric studies on the Fe25Pd75 film and performed density functional theory calculations to explore the electronic and magnetic properties in both hydrogenated and dehydrogenated states. In the final part of this study, we deposited a Fe25Pd75 layer on top of a microscopic coplanar transmission line and investigated the FMR response of the layer while driven by a microwave current in the coplanar line. We observed a large amplitude FMR response upon hydrogen absorption, as well as desorption rates when cycling between pure N2 and a mixture of 3% H2 + 97% N2.

Medical errors in clinical text pose significant risks to patient safety. The MEDIQA-CORR 2024 shared task focuses on detecting and correcting these errors across three subtasks: identifying the presence of an error, extracting the erroneous sentence, and generating a corrected sentence. In this paper, we present our approach that achieved top performance in all three subtasks. For the MS dataset, which contains subtle errors, we developed a retrieval-based system leveraging external medical question-answering datasets. For the UW dataset, reflecting more realistic clinical notes, we created a pipeline of modules to detect, localize, and correct errors. Both approaches utilized the DSPy framework for optimizing prompts and few-shot examples in large language model (LLM) based programs. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of LLM based programs for medical error correction. However, our approach has limitations in addressing the full diversity of potential errors in medical documentation. We discuss the implications of our work and highlight future research directions to advance the robustness and applicability of medical error detection and correction systems.

Achieving maximum electron beam brightness in photoinjectors requires detailed control of the 3D bunch shape and precise tuning of the beam focusing. Even in state-of-the-art designs, slice emittance growth due to nonlinear space charge forces and partial nonlaminarity often remains non-negligible. In this work we introduce a new means to linearize the transverse slice phase space: a sacrificial portion of the bunch's own charge distribution, formed into a wavebroken shock front by highly nonlinear space charge forces within the gun, whose downstream purpose is to dynamically linearize the desired bunch core. We show that linearization of an appropriately prepared bunch can be achieved via strongly nonlaminar focusing of the sacrificial shock front, while the inner core focuses laminarly. This leads to a natural spatial separation of the two distributions: a dense core surrounded by a diffuse halo of sacrificial charge that can be collimated. Multi-objective genetic algorithm optimizations of the ultra-compact x-ray free electron laser (UCXFEL) injector employ this concept, and we interpret it with an analytic model that agrees well with the simulations. In simulation we demonstrate a final bunch charge of 100 pC, peak current $\sim 30$ A, and a sacrificial charge of 150 pC (250 pC total emitted from cathode) with normalized emittance growth of $<20$ nm-rad due to space charge. On 8 April 2024, tens of millions of people across North America will be able to view a total solar eclipse. Such astronomical events have been important throughout history, but with nearly 10,000 satellites in orbit, we question whether total eclipses will now reveal a sky full of satellites, fundamentally changing this experience for humanity. Using the current population of Starlink satellites, we find that the brightest satellites would be naked-eye visible in dark skies, but the high sky brightness during totality will make them undetectable to the unaided eye. Our model does not take into account the effects of chance reflections from large, flat surfaces like solar panels, which we expect will cause glints and flares that could be visible from large satellites and abandoned rocket bodies. A set of universal quantum gates is a vital part of the theory of quantum computing, but is absent in the developing theory of Relativistic Quantum Information (RQI). Yet, the Unruh--DeWitt (UDW) detector formalism can be elevated to unitary gates between qubits and quantum fields and has allowed RQI applications in quantum Shannon theory, such as mutual information, coherent information, and quantum capacity in field-mediated quantum channels. Recently, experimental realizations of UDW-style qubits have been proposed in two-dimensional quantum materials, but their value as a quantum technology, including quantum communication and computation, is not yet clear, especially since fields introduce many avenues for decoherence. We introduce controlled-unitary UDW logic gates between qubit and field that are comparable to the two-qubit CNOT gate. We then extend this formalism to demonstrate Quantum State Transfer (QST) (two CNOT gates) and SWAP (three CNOT gates) channels. We illustrate the performance of these quantum operation gates with the diamond distance, a measure of distinguishability between quantum channels. Distinguishability measures like diamond distance allow for a rigorous comparison between field-mediated transduction through UDW detectors and local quantum mechanical operations and so quantify the performance of UDW detectors in quantum technological applications. Using the controlled-unitary qubit-field interactions we define an exact form of the CNOT gate. With this technique we also define quantum field-mediated single qubit operations associated with the Hadamard $H$, the $S$, and $T$ gates. The entanglement-induced barren plateau is an exponential vanishing of the parameter gradients with system size that limits the practical application of variational quantum algorithms(VQA). A landscape transition from barren plateau to no-barren plateau was recently observed in monitored quantum circuits, hypothesized to coincide with the measurement-induced phase transition (MIPT) that separates the area-law states from the volume-law states. We argue from an information theory perspective that these are different transitions. This hypothesis is supported by a numerical study that includes cost-gradient variances, visualizations of the optimization runs and cost-landscape, and a quantum-classical channel mutual information measure. The results are evidence for a universal measurement-induced landscape transition (MILT) at $p_c^{\text{MILT}} \approx 0.2 < p_c^{\text{MIPT}}$ and that throughout $0

The Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor mission is a NASA observatory designed to discover and characterize near-Earth asteroids and comets. The mission's primary objective is to find the majority of objects large enough to cause severe regional impact damage ($>$140 m in effective spherical diameter) within its five-year baseline survey. Operating at the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrange point, the mission will survey to within 45 degrees of the Sun in an effort to find the objects in the most Earth-like orbits. The survey cadence is optimized to provide observational arcs long enough to reliably distinguish near-Earth objects from more distant small bodies that cannot pose an impact hazard. Over the course of its survey, NEO Surveyor will discover $\sim$200,000 - 300,000 new NEOs down to sizes as small as $\sim$10 m and thousands of comets, significantly improving our understanding of the probability of an Earth impact over the next century., Comment: accepted to PSJ

As progress towards real implementations of cryogenic high gradient normal conducting accelerating cavities continues, a more mature understanding of the surface physics in this novel environment becomes increasingly necessary. To this end, we here focus on developing a deeper understanding of one cavity figure of merit, the radiofrequency (RF) surface resistivity, $R_s$. A combination of experimental measurements and theory development form the basis of this work. For many cases, existing theory is sufficient but there are nuances leading to systemic errors in prediction which we address here. In addition, for certain cases there exist unexpected local minimum in $R_s$ found at temperatures above 0K. We compare here several alternative models for RF surface resistivity those which incorporate thin film like behavior which we use to predict the location of the local minimum in surface resistivity. Our experimental results focus on C-band frequencies for the benefit of several future cryogenic linear accelerator concepts intended to operate in this regime. To this end we have measured factor of $2.89\pm 0.05$ improvements in quality factor at $77$K and $4.61\pm 0.05$ at 45K. We further describe the test setup and cooling capabilities to address systematic issues associated with the measurements as well as a comparison of RF cavity preparation and the significant effect on $R_s$. Some implications of our measurements to linear accelerators combined with the theoretical considerations are extended to a wider range of frequencies especially the two additional aforementioned bands. Unruh--DeWitt (UDW) detectors implemented as UDW quantum gates provide a framework for evaluating quantum Shannon theory properties of qubit-field systems. UDW quantum channels consist of qubits encoding/decoding quantum information onto/off of quantum fields. With the controlled unitary structure of UDW gates, the encoding/decoding process happens on the diagonals of the coherent state density matrix describing the field. However, given the non-orthogonality of coherent states the output of UDW channels consists of unwanted states and unwanted mixing of states that lower the channel capacity. In idealized models, these appear in the off-diagonals and diagonals of the field's density matrix in the coherent state basis. For this reason, we show that UDW quantum channels have an unexpected representation as certain bosonic dephasing channels with dephasing parameters captured by a combination of the coupling, smearing, and switching functions of the UDW detector model. We demonstrate the unexpected consequence that a larger dephasing parameter results in higher channel capacity and helps alleviate unwanted state mixing. We illustrate these properties through two examples: inserting an additional ideal dephasing channel into the quantum channel and inserting cross-talk noise via a third UDW gate. Remarkably, the cross-talk noise channel qualitatively improves a lower bound on the quantum capacity suggesting UDW gates will have unexpected performance improvements if realized in condensed matter experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Controlling the formation and stoichiometric content of desired phases of materials has become a central interest for the study of a variety of fields, notably high temperature superconductivity under extreme pressures. The further possibility of accessing metastable states by initiating reactions by x-ray triggered mechanisms over ultra-short timescales is enabled with the development of x-ray free electron lasers (XFEL). Utilizing the exceptionally high brilliance x-ray pulses from the EuXFEL, we report the synthesis of a previously unobserved yttrium hydride under high pressure, along with non-stoichiometric changes in hydrogen content as probed at a repetition rate of 4.5\,MHz using time-resolved x-ray diffraction. Exploiting non-equilibrium pathways we synthesize and characterize a hydride with yttrium cations in an \textit{A}15 structure type at 125\,GPa, predicted using crystal structure searches, with a hydrogen content between 4.0--5.75 hydrogens per cation, that is enthalpically metastable on the convex hull. We demonstrate a tailored approach to changing hydrogen content using changes in x-ray fluence that is not accessible using conventional synthesis methods, and reveals a new paradigm in metastable chemical physics.

In our previous study of Neptune's 4:7 mean motion resonance (MMR), we discovered that its resonant angle can only librate within a specific eccentricity ($e$) versus inclination ($i$) region, determined by a theoretical limiting curve curve (Li et al. 2020). This ``permissible region'' is independent of time and encompasses the entire possible stable region. We now generalize this theory to investigate all high-order MMRs embedded in the main classical Kuiper belt (MCKB). We first consider the 2nd-order 3:5 MMR in the framework of planet migration and resonance capture, and have further validated our limiting curve theory for both captured and observed 3:5 resonators. It suggests that only the $(e, i)$ pairs inside the individual permissible regions should be chosen as initial conditions for studying the in-situ evolution of high-order resonators. With such a new setting, we proceed to explore the long-term stability (for 4 Gyr) of different resonant populations, and our simulations predict that: (1) the 3:5 and 4:7 resonators are comparable in number, and they could have inclinations up to $40^{\circ}$; (2) the populations of objects in the higher order 5:9, 6:11, 7:12 and 7:13 resonances is about 1/10 of the 3:5 (or 4:7) resonator population, and nearly all of them are found on the less inclined orbits with $i<10^{\circ}$; (3) for these high-order resonances, almost all resonators reside in their individual permissible regions. We present Clinical Camel, an open large language model (LLM) explicitly tailored for clinical research. Fine-tuned from LLaMA-2 using QLoRA, Clinical Camel achieves state-of-the-art performance across medical benchmarks among openly available medical LLMs. Leveraging efficient single-GPU training, Clinical Camel surpasses GPT-3.5 in five-shot evaluations on all assessed benchmarks, including 64.3% on the USMLE Sample Exam (compared to 58.5% for GPT-3.5), 77.9% on PubMedQA (compared to 60.2%), 60.7% on MedQA (compared to 53.6%), and 54.2% on MedMCQA (compared to 51.0%). In addition to these benchmarks, Clinical Camel demonstrates its broader capabilities, such as synthesizing plausible clinical notes. This work introduces dialogue-based knowledge encoding, a novel method to synthesize conversational data from dense medical texts. While benchmark results are encouraging, extensive and rigorous human evaluation across diverse clinical scenarios is imperative to ascertain safety before implementation. By openly sharing Clinical Camel, we hope to foster transparent and collaborative research, working towards the safe integration of LLMs within the healthcare domain. Significant challenges concerning reliability, bias, and the potential for outdated knowledge persist.
