Understanding and predicting the evolving spin states of defunct geosynchronous (GEO) satellites and rocket bodies is important for space situational awareness, active debris removal, satellite servicing, and anomaly resolution. There is clear evidence that many defunct GEO satellite spin states are predominantly driven by the Yarkovsky-O’Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect. The YORP effect is spin state evolution due to solar radiation and thermal re-emission torques. Observations are crucial to understand how YORP drives spin states and to validate dynamical models. Unfortunately, GEO satellites are non-resolved from ground-based telescopes and extracting spin states (spin periods, rotational angular momentum vector, instantaneous attitude) from ubiquitous photometric light curve data is challenging. Even for well-known objects, light curve inversion often yields several or more well-fitting spin state solutions within the measurement noise and modeling uncertainty (i.e. detailed satellite geometry, reflective properties, etc.). Also, there is strong evidence that the YORP effect drives satellites from uniform rotation to non-principal axis tumbling. Such tumbling states further complicate the light curve inversion process because the motion is driven by two independent periods rather than one. To aid complete spin state analysis, particularly for the tumbling case, Doppler radar observations collected at NASA Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex are incorporated. Observing the well-documented retired GOES 8–12 weather satellites, the radar data yielded unambiguous spin period estimates for all targets and greatly narrowed pole solutions, independent of light curve data. Significant changes in spin rates and pole directions were observed over a two month span. These findings are consistent with YORP-driven evolution.

The Goldstone Solar System Radar (GSSR) facility is the largest fully steerable ground-based radar in the world for nonclassified high-resolution ranging and imaging of planetary and small-body targets. Over the years, the use of the GSSR to detect and characterize near-Earth objects (NEOs) has become critical to keep track of potential Earth-impacting hazardous NEO. This article relates the specific modifications made to the GSSR hardware and procedures in the last few years, as well as the new capabilities derived from those upgrades: reduced complexity in remote operations, increased experimental design versatility, and increased performance on bistatic radar experiments from GSSR to other complexes. In addition, we dedicate a section to provide an update on the current GSSR power capabilities as the new klystrons are installed. The work detailed in this article is intended to reach the broader science community in order to communicate how those modifications and the derived new capabilities can make science experiments more successful.

Fundamental properties of the planet Venus, such as its internal mass distribution and variations in length of day, have remained unknown. We used Earth-based observations of radar speckles tied to the rotation of Venus obtained in 2006-2020 to measure its spin axis orientation, spin precession rate, moment of inertia, and length-of-day variations. Venus is tilted by 2.6392 $\pm$ 0.0008 degrees ($1\sigma$) with respect to its orbital plane. The spin axis precesses at a rate of 44.58 $\pm$ 3.3 arcseconds per year ($1\sigma$), which gives a normalized moment of inertia of 0.337 $\pm$ 0.024 and yields a rough estimate of the size of the core. The average sidereal day on Venus in the 2006-2020 interval is 243.0226 $\pm$ 0.0013 Earth days ($1\sigma$). The spin period of the solid planet exhibits variations of 61 ppm ($\sim$20 minutes) with a possible diurnal or semidiurnal forcing. We report radar observations of Apophis obtained during the 2012−2013 apparition. We observed Apophis on fourteen days at Goldstone (8560 MHz, 3.5 cm) and on five days at Arecibo (2380 MHz, 12.3 cm) between 2012 December 21 to 2013 March 16. Closest approach occurred on January 9 at a distance of 0.097 au. We obtained relatively weak echo power spectra and delay-Doppler images. The highest range resolution was achieved at Goldstone, 0.125 µs or ∼20 m/px. The data suggest that Apophis is an elongated, asymmetric, and possibly bifurcated object. The images place a lower bound on the long axis of 450 m. We used the Pravec et al. (2014) lightcurve-derived shape and spin state model of Apophis to test for short axis mode (SAM) non-principal axis rotation (NPA) and to estimate the asteroid's dimensions. The radar data are consistent with the NPA spin state and they constrain the equivalent diameter to be D = 0.34 ± 0.04 km (1σ bound). This is slightly smaller than the most recent IR observation estimates of 375 ( − 10 ) ( + 14 ) m and 380–393 m, reported by Muller et al. (2014) and Licandro et al. (2016) respectively. We estimated a radar albedo of 0.25 ± 0.11 based on Goldstone data, and an optical albedo, pV, of 0.35 ± 0.10. Licandro et al. (2016) reported pV in the range of 0.24–0.33. The radar astrometry has been updated using a 3-D shape model. The Yarkovsky acceleration has not been detected in the current orbital fit, but if the position error during the 2021 encounter exceeds 8–12 km, this could signal a detection of the Yarkovsky effect.

We report radar and optical photometric observations of near-Earth asteroid (214869) 2007 PA8 obtained during October 2–November 13, 2012. We observed 2007 PA8 on sixteen days with Goldstone (8560 MHz, 3.5 cm) and on five days with the 0.6 m telescope at Table Mountain Observatory. Closest approach was on November 5 at a distance of 0.043 au. Images obtained with Goldstone's new chirp system achieved range resolutions as fine as 3.75 m, placing thousands of pixels on the asteroid's surface, and revealing that 2007 PA8 is an elongated, asymmetric object. Surface features include angularities, facets, and a concavity approximately 400 m in diameter. We used the Shape software to estimate the asteroid's 3D shape and spin state. 2007 PA8 has a broad, rounded end and a tapered, angular end with sharp-crested ridges. The asteroid's effective diameter is 1.35 ± 0.07 km, which in combination with the absolute magnitude of 16.30 ± 0.52 gives an optical albedo of pV = 0.29 ± 0.14. The shape modeling of the radar data revealed that 2007 PA8 is a non-principal axis (NPA) rotator in the short-axis mode with an average period of precession by the long axis around the angular momentum vector of 4.26 ± 0.02 days and an oscillatory period around the long axis of 20.55 ± 3.75 days. The amplitude of rolling around the long axis is 42 ± 7° . The angular momentum vector points toward ecliptic longitude and latitude of 273.6 ± 10°, +16.9 ± 5°. 2007 PA8 is only the second confirmed short-axis mode NPA rotator known in the near-Earth asteroid population after (99942) Apophis (Pravec et al., 2014). 2007 PA8 has a geopotential high at the equator, where the equator is defined as the plane that contains the long and intermediate axis. This geopotential extreme could be interpreted as a large, hidden surface depression, or as evidence that 2007 PA8 is a multi-component body.
