The term "unstable neutral media" (UNM) has traditionally been used to describe the transient phase formed between the warm and cold neutral hydrogen (HI) phases and has not been the focus of HI studies. However, recent observations suggest that the UNM phase not only has a significantly longer-than-expected lifetime but also occupies at least 20\% to 40\% of both the volume and mass fraction of HI. In this paper, we argue that the existence and dominance of the UNM can be explained by the presence of strong turbulence using an energy balance argument. The mass fraction of UNM is directly proportional to the turbulent velocity dispersion $\sigma_v$: mass fraction of UNM $\propto \sigma_v^{\frac{2n}{1+n}}$, where $n$ is the absolute value of the adiabatic index in the unstable phase. In this study, we apply the Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT) to the merging Centaurus galaxy. We compare gradient maps derived from the PHANGS-ALMA survey using CO emission lines with magnetic field tracings from dust polarization data obtained via the HAWC+ instrument. Our analysis reveals a strong correspondence between the directions indicated by these two tracers across most of the galactic image. Specifically, we identify jet regions as areas of anti-alignment, consistent with previous reports that gradients tend to rotate 90 degrees in outflow regions. Statistically, we find that the alignment of magnetic fields, as revealed by polarization, is most accurate in regions with the highest signal-to-noise ratios. The gradient technique is a promising tool with theoretical foundations based on the fundamental properties of MHD turbulence and turbulent reconnection. Its various incarnations use spectroscopic, synchrotron, and intensity data to trace the magnetic field and measure the media magnetization in terms of Alfven Mach number. We provide an analytical theory of gradient measurements and quantify the effects of averaging gradients along the line of sight and over the plane of the sky. We derive analytical expressions that relate the properties of gradient distribution with the Alfven Mach number $M_A$. We show that these measurements can be combined with measures of sonic Mach number or line broadening to obtain the magnetic field strength. We investigate the impact of turbulence on magnetic reconnection through high-resolution 3D MHD simulations, covering Lundquist numbers from $S=10^3$ to $10^6$. Our simulations introduce small-scale perturbations injected into the system until $t=0.1\, t_A$. Even after the initial perturbation ceases, turbulence grows and persists, leading to sustained high reconnection rates of $V_\text{rec}/V_A \sim 0.03-0.08$, which surpass those generated solely by resistive tearing modes (plasmoids) observed in 2D and 3D PIC/MHD simulations by factors of 5 to 6. Our findings reveal that the achieved reconnection rates align with observations in solar phenomena and those reported in 3D MHD global simulations of accretion flows and relativistic jets. Notably, our simulations exhibit a steady-state reconnection rate coinciding with the full development of turbulence, showcasing the robustness and persistence of the reconnection in a turbulent environment. We establish the independence of the reconnection rate from the Lundquist number, consistent with the theory of turbulent reconnection proposed by Lazarian and Vishniac. Our results demonstrate a mild dependence of $V_\text{rec}$ on the plasma-$\beta$ parameter, the ratio between the thermal and magnetic pressure, illustrating a decrease from $0.036$ to $0.028$ as $\beta$ increases from $2$ to $64$ for simulations with $S=10^5$. Finally, we explore the influence of the magnetic Prandtl number ($\text{Pr}_m=\nu/\eta$) on the reconnection rate and find this influence to be negligible during the turbulent regime across the range tested, from $\text{Pr}_m=1$ to $60$. Synchrotron observation serves as a fundamental tool for studying magnetic fields in various astrophysical settings, yet its ability to unveil three-dimensional (3D) magnetic fields-including plane-of-the-sky orientation, inclination angle relative to the line of sight, and magnetization-remains largely underexplored. Inspired by the latest insights into anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, we found that synchrotron emission's intensity structures inherently reflect this anisotropy, carrying detailed information about 3D magnetic fields. Capitalizing on this foundation, we integrate a machine learning approach-Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-to extract this latent information, thereby facilitating the exploration of 3D magnetic fields. The model is trained on synthetic synchrotron emission maps, derived from 3D MHD turbulence simulations encompassing a range of sub-Alfv\'enic to super-Alfv\'enic conditions. We show that the CNN model is physically interpretable and the CNN is capable of reconstructing 3D magnetic field topology and assessing magnetization. In addition, we test our methodology against noise and resolution effects. We show that this CNN-based approach maintains a high degree of robustness in tracing 3D magnetic fields, even when the low spatial frequencies of the synchrotron image are absent. We numerically investigate the driving of MHD turbulence by gravitational contraction using simulations of an initially spherical, magnetically supercritical cloud core with initially transonic and trans-Alfv\'enic turbulence. We perform a Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field, and investigate the evolution of its solenoidal and compressible parts, as well as of the velocity component along the gravitational acceleration vector, a proxy for the infall component of the velocity field. We find that: 1) In spite of being supercritical, the core first contracts to a sheet perpendicular to the mean field, and the sheet itself collapses. 2) The solenoidal component of the turbulence remains at roughly its initial level throughout the simulation, while the compressible component increases continuously. This implies that turbulence does {\it not} dissipate towards the center of the core. 3) The distribution of simulation cells in the $B$-$\rho$ plane occupies a wide triangular region at low densities, bounded below by the expected trend for fast MHD waves ($B \propto \rho$, applicable for high local Alfv\'enic Mach number $\Ma$) and above by the trend expected for slow waves ($B \sim$ constant, applicable for low local $\Ma$). At high densities, the distribution follows a single trend $B \propto \rho^{\gamef}$, with $1/2 < \gamef < 2/3$, as expected for gravitational compression. 4) The measured mass-to-magnetic flux ratio $\lambda$ increases with radius $r$, due to the different scalings of the mass and magnetic flux with $r$. At a fixed radius, $\lambda$ increases with time due to the accretion of material along field lines. 5) The solenoidal energy fraction is much smaller than the total turbulent component, indicating that the collapse drives the turbulence mainly compressibly, even in directions orthogonal to that of the collapse., Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS after first set of reviewer's recommendations. We study the properties of sub-Alfvenic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, i.e., turbulence with Alfven Mach number $M_A=V_L/V_A<1$, where $V_L$ is the velocity at the injection scale and $V_A$ is the Alfven velocity. We demonstrate that weak turbulence can have different regimes depending on whether it is driven by velocity or magnetic fluctuations. If the turbulence is driven by isotropic bulk forces, i.e. velocity-driven, in an incompressible conducting fluid, we predict that the kinetic energy is $M_A^{-2}$ times larger than the energy of magnetic fluctuations. This effect arises from the long parallel wavelength tail of the forcing, which excites modes with $k_\|/k_\perp < M_A$. We also predict that as the turbulent cascade reaches the strong regime the energy of slow modes exceeds the energy of Alfven modes by a factor $M_A^{-1}$. These effects are absent if the turbulence is magnetically driven at the injection scale. We confirm these predictions with numerical simulations. As the assumption of magnetic and kinetic energy equipartition is at the core of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi (DCF) approach to measuring magnetic field strength in sub-Alfvenic turbulence, we conclude that the DCF technique is not universally applicable. In particular, we suggest that the dynamical excitation of long azimuthal wavelength modes in the galactic disk may compromise the use of the DCF technique. Magnetic fields play a crucial role in star formation, yet tracing them becomes particularly challenging, especially in the presence of outflow feedback in protostellar systems. We targeted the star-forming region L1551, notable for its apparent outflows, to investigate the magnetic fields. These fields were probed using polarimetry observations from the Planck satellite at 353 GHZ/849 $\mu$m, the SOFIA/HAWC+ measurement at 214 $\mu$m, and the JCMT/SCUPOL 850 $\mu$m survey. Consistently, all three measurements show that the magnetic fields twist towards the protostar IRS 5. Additionally, we utilized the Velocity Gradients Technique (VGT) on the $^{12}$CO (J = 1-0) emission data to distinguish the magnetic fields directly associated with the protostellar outflows. These were then compared with the polarization results. Notably, in the outskirts of the region, these measurements generally align. However, as one approaches the center of IRS 5, the measurements tend to yield mostly perpendicular relative orientations. This suggests that the outflows might be dynamically significant from a scale of approximately $\sim0.2$~pc, causing the velocity gradient to change direction by 90 degrees. Furthermore, we discovered that the polarization fraction $p$ and the total intensity $I$ correlate as $p \propto I^{-\alpha}$. Specifically, $\alpha$ is approximately $1.044\pm0.06$ for SCUPOL and around $0.858\pm0.15$ for HAWC+. The theoretical prediction that magnetic reconnection spontaneously drives turbulence has been supported by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and kinetic simulations. While reconnection with externally driven turbulence is accepted as an effective mechanism for particle acceleration, the acceleration during the reconnection with self-driven turbulence is studied for the first time in this work. By using high-resolution 3D MHD simulations of reconnection with self-generated turbulence, we inject test particles into the reconnection layer to study their acceleration process. We find that the energy gain of the particles takes place when they bounce back and forth between converging turbulent magnetic fields. The particles can be efficiently accelerated in self-driven turbulent reconnection with the energy increase by about 3 orders of magnitude in the range of the box size. The acceleration proceeds when the particle gyroradii become larger than the thickness of the reconnection layer. We find that the acceleration in the direction perpendicular to the local magnetic field dominates over that in the parallel direction. The energy spectrum of accelerated particles is time-dependent with a slope that evolves toward -2.5. In a weakly compressible high-$\beta$ medium, pitch-angle scattering and the associated scattering acceleration of cosmic rays (CRs) by anisotropic Alfv\'{e}n and slow modes of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is inefficient. To tap the energy from magnetic compressions for efficient particle acceleration, a diffusion mechanism that can effectively confine particles in space without causing their trapping or pitch-angle isotropization is needed. We find that the mirror diffusion in MHD turbulence recently identified in Lazarian and Xu (2021) satisfies all the above conditions and serves as a promising diffusion mechanism for efficient acceleration of CRs via their stochastic non-resonant interactions with magnetic compressions/expansions. The resulting mirror acceleration is dominated by the slow-mode eddies with their lifetime comparable to the mirror diffusion time of CRs. Consequently, we find that the acceleration time of mirror acceleration is independent of the spatial diffusion coefficient of CRs. The mirror acceleration brings new life for the particle acceleration in a weakly compressible/incompressible medium and has important implications for studying CR re-acceleration in the high-$\beta$ intracluster medium., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ApJ

The linear polarization of thermal dust emission provides a powerful tool to probe interstellar and circumstellar magnetic fields, because aspherical grains tend to align themselves with magnetic field lines. While the Radiative Alignment Torque (RAT) mechanism provides a theoretical framework to this phenomenon, some aspects of this alignment mechanism still need to be quantitatively tested. One such aspect is the possibility that the reference alignment direction changes from the magnetic field ("B-RAT") to the radiation field k-vector ("k-RAT") in areas of strong radiation fields. We investigate this transition toward the Orion Bar PDR, using multi-wavelength SOFIA HAWC+ dust polarization observations. The polarization angle maps show that the radiation field direction is on average not the preferred grain alignment axis. We constrain the grain sizes for which the transition from B-RAT to k-RAT occur in the Orion Bar (grains > 0.1 {\mu}m toward the most irradiated locations), and explore the radiatively driven rotational disruption that may take place in the high-radiation environment of the Bar for large grains. While the grains susceptible to rotational disruption should be in supra-thermal rotation and aligned with the magnetic field, k-RAT aligned grains would rotate at thermal velocities. We find that the grain size at which the alignment shifts from B-RAT to k-RAT corresponds to grains too large to survive the rotational disruption. Therefore, we expect a large fraction of grains to be aligned at supra-thermal rotation with the magnetic field, and potentially be subject to rotational disruption depending on their tensile strength.

Propagation of cosmic rays (CRs) in turbulent and magnetized astrophysical media is a long-standing problem that requires both understanding of the properties of turbulent magnetic fields and their interaction with energetic particles. This review focuses on selected recent theoretical findings made based on the progress in understanding and simulating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. In particular, we address the problem of perpendicular and parallel propagation of CRs and identify the conditions when the perpendicular propagation is superdiffusive and diffusive. The mapping of the Galactic Magnetic Field (GMF) in three dimensions is essential to comprehend various astrophysical processes that occur within the Milky Way. This study endeavors to map the GMF by utilizing the latest MM2 technique, the Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT), the Column Density Variance Approach, and the GALFA-H I survey of Neutral Hydrogen (H I) emission. The MM2 and VGT methods rely on an advanced understanding of magnetohydrodynamics turbulence to determine the magnetic field strength and orientation respectively. The H I emission data, combined with the Galactic rotational curve, gives us the distribution of H I gas throughout the Milky Way. By combining these two techniques, we map the GMF orientation and strength, as well as the Alfv\'en Mach number $M_{\rm A}$ in 3D for a low galactic latitude ($b<30^{\rm o}$) region close to the Perseus Arm. The analysis of column density variance gives the sonic Mach number $M_{\rm s}$ distribution, The results of this study reveal the sub-Alfv\'enic and subsonic (or trans-sonic) nature of the H I gas. The variation of mean $M_{\rm A}$ along the line-of-sight approximately ranges from 0.6 to 0.9, while that of mean $M_{\rm s}$ is from 0.2 to 1.5. The mean magnetic field strength varies from ~0.5 $\mu$G to ~2.5 $\mu$G exhibiting a decreasing trend towards the Galaxy's outskirt. This work provides a new avenue for mapping the GMF, especially the magnetic field strength, in 3D. Recent development of the velocity gradient technique shows the {\toreferee capability} of the technique in the way of tracing magnetic fields morphology in diffuse interstellar gas and molecular clouds. In this paper, we perform the numerical systemic study of the performance of velocity and synchrotron gradient for a wide range of magnetization in the sub-sonic environment. Addressing the studies of magnetic field in atomic hydrogen, we also study the formation of velocity caustics in the spectroscopic channel maps in the presence of the thermal broadening. We show that the velocity caustics can be recovered when applied to the Cold Neutral Medium (CNM) and the Gradient Technique (GT) can reliably trace magnetic fields there. Finally, we discuss the changes of the anisotropy of observed structure functions when we apply to the analysis the procedures developed within the framework of GT studies., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Alfven wave is the single most important physical phenomenon of magneto-hydrodynamic turbulence and has far-reaching impact to almost all studies related to astrophysical magnetic field. Yet the restoration of the Alfven wave fluctuations from a given magnetic field, aka the local Alfven wave problem, is never properly addressed in literature albeit its importance. Previous works model the Alfven wave fluctuation as the perturbation along a straight-line, constant magnetic field. However, Lazarian & Pogosyan (2012) suggested that the decomposition of Alfven wave along a straight line, aka. the global frame decomposition, has a factor of discrepancy to the true local Alfven wave fluctuation. Here we provide a geometric interpretation on how the local Alfven wave is related to the global frame through the use of vector frame formulation. We prove both analytically and numerically that the local frame Alfven wave is an orthogonal transformation of that of the global frame and related by the local Alfvenic Mach number. In other words, when we observe Alfven wave in the global frame of reference, some of the Alfven wave will be mistaken as compressible waves. The importance of frame choices have a far-reaching impact to the analytical studies of MHD turbulence. The ubiquitous turbulence in astrophysical plasmas is important for both magnetic reconnection and reconnection acceleration. We study the particle acceleration during fast 3D turbulent reconnection with reconnection-driven turbulence. Particles bounce back and forth between the reconnection-driven inflows due to the mirror reflection and convergence of strong magnetic fields. Via successive head-on collisions, the kinetic energy of the inflows is converted into the accelerated particles. Turbulence not only regulates the inflow speed but also introduces various inflow obliquities with respect to the local turbulent magnetic fields. As both the energy gain and escape probability of particles depend on the inflow speed, the spectral index of particle energy spectrum is not universal. We find it in the range from $\approx 2.5$ to $4$, with the steepest spectrum expected at a strong guide field, i.e. a small angle between the total incoming magnetic field and the guide field. We study the observable properties of compressible MHD turbulence covering different turbulence regimes, based on synthetic synchrotron observations arising from 3D MHD numerical simulations. Using the synchrotron emissivity and intensity, we first explore how the cosmic ray spectral indices affect the measurements of turbulence properties by employing normalized correlation functions. We then study how the anisotropy of synchrotron total and polarization intensities arising from three fundamental MHD modes vary with the viewing angle, i.e., the angle between the mean magnetic field and the line of sight. We employ the ratio of quadrupole moment to the monopole one (QM) for this purpose. Our numerical results demonstrate that: (1) the two-point correlation function of synchrotron statistics for the arbitrary cosmic ray spectral index is related to the special case of magnetic field index $\gamma=2$ in agreement with the analytical formulae provided by Lazarian \& Pogosyan (2012); (2) the anisotropy of synchrotron total and polarization intensities arising from Alfv\'en and slow modes increases with the increase of the viewing angle, while that of fast mode remains almost unchanged with the viewing angle; (3) the analytical formulae of synchrotron intensities for studying turbulence can be applied to describing statistics of polarization intensities, and the QM can be successfully used to recover turbulence anisotropy. Star formation is a complex process that typically occurs in dense regions of molecular clouds mainly regulated by magnetic fields, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, and self-gravity. However, it remains a challenging endeavor to trace the magnetic field and determine regions of gravitational collapse where the star is forming. Based on the anisotropic properties of MHD turbulence, a new technique termed Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT) has been proposed to address these challenges. In this study, we apply the VGT to two regions of the giant California Molecular Cloud (CMC), namely, L1478 and L1482, and analyze the difference in their physical properties. We use the $^{12}$CO (J = 2 - 1), $^{13}$CO (J = 2 - 1), and C$^{18}$O (J = 2 - 1) emission lines observed with the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope. We compare VGT results calculated in the resolutions of $3.3'$ and $10'$ to Planck polarization at 353 GHz and $10'$ to determine areas of MHD turbulence dominance and self-gravity dominance. We show that the resolution difference can introduce misalignment between the two measurements. We find the VGT-measured magnetic fields globally agree with that from Planck in L1478 suggesting self-gravity's effect is insignificant. The best agreement appears in VGT-$^{12}$CO. As for L1482, the VGT measurements are statistically perpendicular to the Planck polarization indicating the dominance of self-gravity. Interaction of three-dimensional magnetic fields, turbulence, and self-gravity in the molecular cloud is crucial in understanding star formation but has not been addressed so far. In this work, we target the low-mass star-forming region L1688 and use the spectral emissions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and H I, as well as polarized dust emissions. To obtain the 3D direction of the magnetic field, we employ the novel polarization fraction analysis. In combining with the plane-of-the-sky (POS) magnetic field strength derived from the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi (DCF) method and the new Differential Measure Analysis (DMA) technique, we present the first measurement of L1688's three-dimensional magnetic field, including its orientation and strength. We find that L1688's magnetic field has two statistically different inclination angles. The low-intensity tail has an inclination angle $\approx55^\circ$ on average, while that of the central dense clump is $\approx30^\circ$. We find the global mean value of total magnetic field strength is $B_{\rm tot}\approx135$ uG from DCF and $B_{\rm tot}\approx75$ uG from DMA. We use the velocity gradient technique (VGT) to separate the magnetic fields' POS orientation associated with L1688 and its foreground/background. The magnetic fields' orientations are statistically coherent. The probability density function of H$_2$ column density and VGT reveal that L1688 is potentially undergoing gravitational contraction at large scale $\approx1.0$ pc and gravitational collapse at small scale $\approx0.2$ pc. The gravitational contraction mainly along the magnetic field results in an approximate power-law relation $B_{\rm tot}\propto n_{\rm H}^{1/2}$ when volume density $n_{\rm H}$ is less than approximately $6.0\times10^3$ cm$^{-3}$., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Probing magnetic fields in astrophysical environments is both important and challenging. The Gradient Technique (GT) is a new tool for tracing magnetic fields, rooted in the properties of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence and turbulent magnetic reconnection. In this work, we examine the performance of GT when applied to synthetic synchrotron emission and spectroscopic data obtained from sub-Alfv\'enic and trans-Alfv\'enic MHD simulations. We demonstrate the improved accuracy of GT in tracing magnetic fields in the absence of low-spatial frequencies. Additionally, we apply a low-spatial frequency filter to a diffuse neutral hydrogen region selected from the GALFA-\ion{H}{1} survey. Magnetic fields on the order of 100 $\mu$G observed in young supernova remnants cannot be amplified by shock compression alone. To investigate the amplification caused by turbulent dynamo, we perform three-dimensional MHD simulations of the interaction between shock wave and inhomogeneous density distribution with a shallow spectrum in the preshock medium. The postshock turbulence is mainly driven by the strongest preshock density contrast and follows the Kolmogorov scaling. The resulting turbulence amplifies the postshock magnetic field. The time evolution of the magnetic fields agrees with the prediction of the nonlinear turbulent dynamo theory in Xu & Lazarian (2016). When the initial weak magnetic field is perpendicular to the shock normal, the maximum amplification of the field's strength achieves a factor of $\approx200$, which is twice larger than that for a parallel shock. We find that the perpendicular shock exhibits a smaller turbulent Alfv\'en Mach number in the vicinity of the shock front than the parallel shock. However, the strongest magnetic field has a low volume filling factor and is limited by the turbulent energy due to the reconnection diffusion taking place in a turbulent and magnetized fluid. The magnetic field strength averaged along the $z$-axis is reduced by a factor $\gtrsim10$. We decompose the turbulent velocity and magnetic field into solenoidal and compressive modes. The solenoidal mode is dominant and evolves to follow the Kolmogorov scaling, even though the preshock density distribution has a shallow spectrum. Molecular gas is believed to be the fuel for star formation and nuclear activity in Seyfert galaxies. To explore the role of magnetic fields in funneling molecular gas into the nuclear region, measurements of the magnetic fields embedded in molecular gas are needed. By applying the new velocity gradient technique (VGT) to ALMA and PAWS's CO isotopolog data, we obtain the first detection of CO-associated magnetic fields in several nearby Seyfert galaxies and their unprecedented high-resolution magnetic field maps. The VGT-measured magnetic fields in molecular gas globally agree with those inferred from existing HAWC+ dust polarization and VLA synchrotron polarization. An overall good alignment between the magnetic fields traced by VGT-CO and by synchrotron polarization may support the correlation between star formation and cosmic ray generation. We find that the magnetic fields traced by VGT-CO have a significant radial component in the central regions of most Seyferts in our sample, where efficient molecular gas inflows or outflows may happen. In particular, we find local misalignment between the magnetic fields traced by CO and dust polarization within the nuclear ring of NGC 1097, and the former aligns with the central bar's orientation. This misalignment reveals different magnetic field configurations in different gas phases and may provide an observational diagnostic for the ongoing multi-phase fueling of Seyfert activity., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures

The heart of the Large Magellanic Cloud, 30 Doradus, is a complex region with a clear core-halo structure. Feedback from the stellar cluster R$\,$136 has been shown to be the main source of energy creating multiple pc-scale expanding-shells in the outer region, and carving a nebula core in the proximity of the ionization source. We present the morphology and strength of the magnetic fields (B-fields) of 30 Doradus inferred from the far-infrared polarimetric observations by SOFIA/HAWC+ at 89, 154, and 214$\,\mu$m. The B-field morphology is complex, showing bending structures around R$\,$136. In addition, we use high spectral and angular resolution [\textsc{CII}] observations from SOFIA/GREAT and CO(2-1) from APEX. The kinematic structure of the region correlates with the B-field morphology and shows evidence of multiple expanding shells. Our B-field strength maps, estimated using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and structure-function, show variations across the cloud within a maximum of 600, 450, and 350$\,\mu$G at 89, 154, and 214$\,\mu$m, respectively. We estimated that the majority of the 30 Doradus clouds are sub-critical and sub-Alfv\'enic. The probability distribution function of the gas density shows that the turbulence is mainly compressively driven, while the plasma beta parameter indicates supersonic turbulence. We show that the B-field is sufficient to hold the cloud structure integrity under feedback from R$\,$136. We suggest that supersonic compressive turbulence enables the local gravitational collapse and triggers a new generation of stars to form. We report the evidence for the existence of the universal, continuous turbulent cascade of velocity fluctuations with Kolmogorov -5/3 slope spanning 6 orders of length scales, from $10^4$ pc down to $10^{-2}$ pc. This was achieved by applying our innovative technique of separating density and velocity fluctuations to a set of spectroscopic surveys featuring various galactic spectral lines. This unified velocity cascade involves different interstellar phases from diffuse galactic media to dense self-gravitating clouds and persists despite interstellar phase transitions. However, the turbulent density fluctuations do not show this universality as the value of the spectral slope changes in different interstellar phases. This agrees with the expectation of compressible turbulence theory and demonstrates that the density is only an indirect tracer of interstellar turbulence. We report that the density fluctuations for clouds and filaments that are preferentially parallel to magnetic fields exhibit the spectral slope of -2. The universal grand turbulent velocity cascade that is established in our paper has significant implications for key galactic physical processes, including star formation, cosmic ray transport etc. We anticipate our result to be a starting point for in vitro models of multiphase interstellar turbulence studies with a significant impact for modeling of spiral galaxies.

The existence of magnetized turbulence in the interstellar HI is well accepted. A number of techniques to obtain turbulence spectrum and magnetic field direction and strength have been developed and successfully applied to HI spectroscopic data. To better separate the imprints of density and velocity fluctuations to the channel maps, a new theory-based technique, the Velocity Decomposition Algorithm (VDA,Yuen et.al 2021), has been created. The technique demonstrates that the intensity fluctuations are separated into a component pv that mostly arises from velocity fluctuations and pd that mostly arise from density fluctuations. The VDA helps to clarify the nature of the filamentary structure observed in channel maps. A recent publication (Kalberla et.al 2022,K22) claims that the application of VDA to HI4PI data provides negative correlation of pv and pd,which according to the authors invalidates the technique since it requires that pv and pd have zero correlation. However, the quantities pv and pd given by VDA are naturally orthogonal which can be trivially checked analytically or numerically. That means the correct application of the VDA to any data must provide zero correlation. This is the point that we clarify in this paper and search for the cause of the mistake in the application of the VDA in K22 that resulted in the erroneous conclusion. We prove analytically that by construction pv and pd are not correlated. We identify the likely mistake in the VDA expression that K22 used and reproduce their figures with the incorrect expression. We find that 14 out of 15 figures in K22 are invalid, and thus their criticism of the VDA is ill-founded and arises from their use of incorrect expressions. Alfv\'{e}nic component of MHD turbulence damps Alfv\'{e}nic waves. The consequences of this effect are important for many processes, from cosmic ray (CR) propagation to launching outflows and winds in galaxies and other magnetized systems. We discuss the differences in the damping of the streaming instability by turbulence and the damping of a plane parallel wave. The former takes place in the system of reference aligned with the local direction of magnetic field along which CRs stream. The latter is in the reference frame of the mean magnetic field and traditionally considered in plasma studies. We also compare the turbulent damping of streaming instability with ion-neutral collisional damping, which becomes the dominant damping effect at a sufficiently low ionization fraction. We study the streaming instability of GeV$-100~$GeV cosmic rays (CRs) and its damping in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM). We find that the damping of streaming instability is dominated by ion-neutral collisional damping in weakly ionized molecular clouds, turbulent damping in the highly ionized warm medium, and nonlinear Landau damping in the Galactic halo. Only in the Galactic halo, is the streaming speed of CRs close to the Alfv\'{e}n speed. Alfv\'{e}nic turbulence plays an important role in both suppressing the streaming instability and regulating the diffusion of streaming CRs via magnetic field line tangling, with the effective mean free path of streaming CRs in the observer frame determined by the Alfv\'{e}nic scale in super-Alfv\'{e}nic turbulence. The resulting diffusion coefficient is sensitive to Alfv\'{e}n Mach number, which has a large range of values in the multi-phase ISM. A recent publication (Li et al. 2021) discovered one of the largest filamentary neutral hydrogen features dubbed Cattail from high resolution FAST observations that might be a new galactic arm of our own Milky Way. However in the analysis, it was suggested that this neutral hydrogen feature is cold despite having 12km/s total linewidth. We evaluate the probability whether the Cattail is actually cold neutral media via the newly developed Velocity Decomposition Algorithm (Yuen et al. 2021a) and Force Balancing Model (Ho et al. 2021a). We discovered that even with the inclusion of the galactic shear term, the feature is still at the unstable neutral media regime. Moreover, we also discover that the Cattail is two disjoint features in caustics space, suggesting that the Cattail might have two different turbulent systems. We check the spectra of the individual system separated via VDA to confirm this argument. We do not exclude the existence of smaller scale cold media being embedded within this structure.

The ubiquity of very thin and lengthy cold neutral media (CNM) has been reported by multiple authors in the HI community. Yet, the reason of how the CNM can be so long and lengthy is still in debate. In this paper, we recognize a new type of instability due to the attractive nature of the pressure force in the unstable phase. We provide a new estimation of the average CNM filament aspect ratio with the consideration of force balances at the phase boundary, which is roughly 5-20 in common CNM environment. We show that most of the cold filaments are less filamentary than what usually predicted via MHD turbulence theory or inferred from observations: The average length of CNM filament is roughly 1/2 of that in isothermal MHD turbulence with similar turbulence conditions. This suggests that the "cold filaments" that is identified in observations might not be in pressure equilibrium or generated via other mechanisms., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We investigate shock acceleration in a realistic astrophysical environment with density inhomogeneities. The turbulence induced by the interaction of the shock precursor with upstream density fluctuations amplifies both upstream and downstream magnetic fields via the turbulent dynamo. The dynamo-amplified turbulent magnetic fields (a) introduce variations of shock obliquities along the shock face, (b) enable energy gain through a combination of shock drift and diffusive processes, (c) give rise to various spectral indices of accelerated particles, (d) regulate the diffusion of particles both parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field, and (e) increase the shock acceleration efficiency. Our results demonstrate that upstream density inhomogeneities and dynamo amplification of magnetic fields play an important role in shock acceleration, and thus shock acceleration depends on the condition of the ambient interstellar environment. As a novel approach for tracing interstellar magnetic fields, the Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT) has been proven to be effective for probing magnetic fields in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). In this work, we verify the VGT in a broader context by applying the technique to a molecular cloud interacting with the supernovae remnant (SNR) W44. We probe the magnetic fields with the VGT using CO, $\rm HCO^+$, and H I emission lines and make a comparison with the Planck 353 GHZ dust polarization. We show that the VGT gives an accurate measurement that coheres with the Planck polarization especially in intense molecular gas emission regions. We further study the foreground's contribution to the polarization that results in a misalignment between the VGT and the Planck measurements in low-intensity molecular gas areas. We advance the VGT to achieve magnetic field tomography by decomposing the W44 into various velocity components. We show that W44's velocity component at $v\sim45$ km s$^{-1}$ exhibits the largest coverage and gives the best agreement with Planck polarization in terms of magnetic field orientation., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Low-energy cosmic rays, in particular protons with energies below 1 GeV, are significant drivers of the thermochemistry of molecular clouds. However, these cosmic rays are also greatly impacted by energy losses and magnetic field transport effects in molecular gas. Explaining cosmic ray ionization rates of $10^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$ or greater in dense gas requires either a high external cosmic ray flux, or local sources of MeV-GeV cosmic ray protons. We present a new local source of low-energy cosmic rays in molecular clouds: first order Fermi-acceleration of protons in regions undergoing turbulent reconnection in molecular clouds. We show from energetic-based arguments there is sufficient energy within the magneto-hydrodynamic turbulent cascade to produce ionization rates compatible with inferred ionization rates in molecular clouds. As turbulent reconnection is a volume-filling process, the proposed mechanism can produce a near-homogeneous distribution of low-energy cosmic rays within molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJL

Small-scale turbulent dynamo is responsible for the amplification of magnetic fields on scales smaller than the driving scale of turbulence in diverse astrophysical media. Most earlier dynamo theories concern the kinematic regime and small-scale magnetic field amplification. Here we review our recent progress in developing the theories for the nonlinear dynamo and the dynamo regime in a partially ionized plasma. The importance of reconnection diffusion of magnetic fields is identified for both the nonlinear dynamo and magnetic field amplification during gravitational contraction. For the dynamo in a partially ionized plasma, the coupling state between neutrals and ions and the ion-neutral collisional damping can significantly affect the dynamo behavior and the resulting magnetic field structure. We present both our analytical predictions and numerical tests with a two-fluid dynamo simulation on the dynamo features in this regime. In addition, to illustrate the astrophysical implications, we discuss several examples for the applications of the dynamo theory to studying magnetic field evolution in both preshock and postshock regions of supernova remnants, in weakly magnetized molecular clouds, during the (primordial) star formation, and during the first galaxy formation., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, published in Reviews of Modern Plasma Physics

As the fundamental physical process with many astrophysical implications, the diffusion of cosmic rays (CRs) is determined by their interaction with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. We consider the magnetic mirroring effect arising from MHD turbulence on the diffusion of CRs. Due to the intrinsic superdiffusion of turbulent magnetic fields, CRs with large pitch angles that undergo mirror reflection, i.e., bouncing CRs, are not trapped between magnetic mirrors, but move diffusively along the turbulent magnetic field, leading to a new type of parallel diffusion, i.e., mirror diffusion. This mirror diffusion is in general slower than the diffusion of non-bouncing CRs with small pitch angles that undergo gyroresonant scattering. The critical pitch angle at the balance between magnetic mirroring and pitch-angle scattering is important for determining the diffusion coefficients of both bouncing and non-bouncing CRs and their scalings with the CR energy. Considering the spatially separated polarization radiation and Faraday rotation regions to simulate complex interstellar media, we study synchrotron polarization gradient techniques' measurement capabilities. We explore how to trace the direction of projected magnetic field of emitting-source region at the multi-frequency bands, using the gradient technique compared with the traditional polarization vector method. Furthermore, we study how Faraday rotation density in the foreground region, i.e., a product of electron number density and parallel component of magnetic fields along the line of sight, affects the measurement of projected magnetic field. Numerical results show that synchrotron polarization gradient technique could successfully trace projected magnetic field within emitting-source region independent of radio frequency. The strong alignment of small-scale turbulent Alfv\'enic motions with the direction of the magnetic field that percolates the small-scale eddies and imprints the direction of the magnetic field is a property that follows from the MHD theory and the theory of turbulent reconnection. The Alfv\'enic eddies mix magnetic fields perpendicular to the direction of the local magnetic field, and this type of motion is used to trace magnetic fields with the velocity gradient technique (VGT). The other type of turbulent motion, fast modes, induces anisotropies orthogonal to Alfv\'enic eddies and interferes with the tracing of the magnetic field with the VGT. We report a new effect, i.e., in a magnetically dominated low-\beta subsonic medium, fast modes are very intermittent, and in a volume, with a small filling factor the fast modes dominate other turbulent motions. We identify these localized regions as the cause of the occasional change of direction of gradients in our synthetic observations. We show that the new technique of measuring the gradients of gradient amplitudes suppresses the contribution from the fast-mode-dominated regions, improving the magnetic field tracing. In addition, we show that the distortion of the gradient measurements by fast modes is also applicable to the synchrotron intensity gradients, but the effect is reduced compared to the VGT., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

Based on the theoretical description of Position-Position-Velocity(PPV) statistics in Lazarian & Pogosyan(2000), we introduce a new technique called the Velocity Decomposition Algorithm(VDA) in separating the PPV fluctuations arising from velocity and density fluctuations. Using MHD turbulence simulations, we demonstrate its promise in retrieving the velocity fluctuations from PPV cube in various physical conditions and its prospects in accurately tracing the magnetic field. We find that for localized clouds, the velocity fluctuations are most prominent at the wing part of the spectral line, and they dominate the density fluctuations. The same velocity dominance applies to extended HI regions undergoing galactic rotation. Our numerical experiment demonstrates that velocity channels arising from the cold phase of atomic hydrogen (HI) are still affected by velocity fluctuations at small scales. We apply the VDA to HI GALFA-DR2 data corresponding to the high-velocity cloud HVC186+19-114 and high latitude galactic diffuse HI data. Our study confirms the crucial role of velocity fluctuations in explaining why linear structures are observed within PPV cubes. We discuss the implications of VDA for both magnetic field studies and predicting polarized galactic emission that acts as the foreground for the Cosmic Microwave Background studies. Additionally, we address the controversy related to the filamentary nature of the HI channel maps and explain the importance of velocity fluctuations in the formation of structures in PPV data cubes. SOFIA HAWC+ polarimetry at $154~\micron$ is reported for the face-on galaxy M51 and the edge-on galaxy NGC 891. For M51, the polarization vectors generally follow the spiral pattern defined by the molecular gas distribution, the far-infrared (FIR) intensity contours, and other tracers of star formation. The fractional polarization is much lower in the FIR-bright central regions than in the outer regions, and we rule out loss of grain alignment and variations in magnetic field strength as causes. When compared with existing synchrotron observations, which sample different regions with different weighting, we find the net position angles are strongly correlated, the fractional polarizations are moderately correlated, but the polarized intensities are uncorrelated. We argue that the low fractional polarization in the central regions must be due to significant numbers of highly turbulent segments across the beam and along lines of sight in the beam in the central 3 kpc of M51. For NGC 891, the FIR polarization vectors within an intensity contour of 1500 $\rm{MJy~sr^{-1}}$ are oriented very close to the plane of the galaxy. The FIR polarimetry is probably sampling the magnetic field geometry in NGC 891 much deeper into the disk than is possible with NIR polarimetry and radio synchrotron measurements. In some locations in NGC 891 the FIR polarization is very low, suggesting we are preferentially viewing the magnetic field mostly along the line of sight, down the length of embedded spiral arms. Via amplification by turbulent dynamo, magnetic fields can be potentially important for the formation of the first stars. To examine the dynamo behavior during the gravitational collapse of primordial gas, we extend the theory of nonlinear turbulent dynamo to include the effect of gravitational compression. The relative importance between dynamo and compression varies during contraction, with the transition from dynamo- to compression-dominated amplification of magnetic fields with the increase of density. In the nonlinear stage of magnetic field amplification with the scale-by-scale energy equipartition between turbulence and magnetic fields, reconnection diffusion of magnetic fields in ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence becomes important. It causes the violation of flux-freezing condition and accounts for (a) the small growth rate of nonlinear dynamo, (b) the weak dependence of magnetic energy on density during contraction, (c) the saturated magnetic energy, and (d) the large correlation length of magnetic fields. The first-year results from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) reveal a gradual decrease of F-coronal dust from distances of $D=0.166-0.336$ AU (or the inner elongations of $\sim 9.22- 18.69~R_{\odot}$) to the Sun (Howard et al. 2019). Such a F-corona decrease cannot be explained by the dust sublimation scenario of the popular silicate composition that implies a dust-free-zone of boundary at heliocentric radius $R\lesssim 4-5R_{\odot}$, but may be explained by appealing to various dust compositions with different sublimation fronts. In this paper, we present an additional explanation for the F-corona decrease using our newly introduced mechanism of dust destruction so-called Radiative Torque Disruption (RATD) mechanism. We demonstrate that RATD rapidly breaks large grains into nanoparticles so that they can be efficiently destroyed by nonthermal sputtering induced by bombardment of energetic protons from slow solar winds, which extends the dust-free-zone established by thermal sublimation to $R_{dfz}\sim 8R_{\odot}$. Beyond this extended dust-free-zone, we find that the dust mass decreases gradually from $R\sim 42R_{\odot}$ toward the Sun due to partial removal of nanodust by nonthermal sputtering. The joint effect of RATD and nonthermal sputtering can successfully reproduce the gradual decrease of the F-corona between $19-9R_{\odot}$ observed by the PSP. Due to the inevitable accumulation of the observed information in the direction of the line of sight, it is difficult to measure the local magnetic field of MHD turbulence. However, the correct understanding of the local magnetic field is a prerequisite for reconstructing the Galactic 3D magnetic field. We study how to reveal the local magnetic field direction and the eddy anisotropy on the basis of the statistics of synchrotron polarization derivative with respect to the squared wavelength $dP/d\lambda^2$. In the low frequency and strong Faraday rotation regime, we implement numerical simulations in the combination of multiple statistic techniques, such as structure function, quadrupole ratio modulus, spectral correlation function, correlation function anisotropy and spatial gradient techniques. We find that (1) statistic analysis of $dP/d\lambda^2$ indeed reveals the anisotropy of underlying MHD turbulence, the degree of which increases with the increase of the radiation frequency; (2) the synergy of both correlation function anisotropy and gradient calculation of $dP/d\lambda^2$ enables the measurement of the local magnetic field direction., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures and 1 Table, Accepted by ApJ

Astrophysical plasmas are turbulent and magnetized. The interaction between cosmic rays (CRs) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is a fundamental astrophysical process. Based on the current understanding of MHD turbulence, we revisit the trapping of CRs by magnetic mirrors in the context of MHD turbulence. In compressible MHD turbulence, isotropic fast modes dominate both trapping and gyroresonant scattering of CRs. The presence of trapping significantly suppresses the pitch-angle scattering and the spatial diffusion of CRs along the magnetic field. The resulting parallel diffusion coefficient has a weaker dependence on CR energy at higher energies. In incompressible MHD turbulence, the trapping by pseudo-Alfv\'{e}n modes dominates over the gyroresonant scattering by anisotropic Alfv\'{e}n and pseudo-Alfv\'{e}n modes at all pitch angles and prevents CRs from diffusion., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Magnetic fields, while ubiquitous in many astrophysical environments, are challenging to measure observationally. Based on the properties of anisotropy of eddies in magnetized turbulence, the Velocity Gradient Technique is a method synergistic to dust polarimetry that is capable of tracing plane-of-the-sky magnetic field, measuring the magnetization of interstellar media and estimating the fraction of gravitational collapsing gas in molecular clouds using spectral line observations. In this paper, we apply this technique to five low-mass star-forming molecular clouds in the Gould Belt and compare the results to the magnetic-field orientation obtained from polarized dust emission. We find the estimates of magnetic field orientations and magnetization for both methods are statistically similar. We estimate the fraction of collapsing gas in the selected clouds. By means of the Velocity Gradient Technique, we also present the plane-of-the-sky magnetic field orientation and magnetization of the Smith cloud, for which dust polarimetry data are unavailable., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We introduce two new ways of obtaining the strength of plane-of-sky (POS) magnetic field by simultaneous use of spectroscopic Doppler-shifted lines and the information on magnetic field direction. The latter can be obtained either through polarization measurements or using the velocity gradient technique. We show the advantages that our techniques have compared to the traditional Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi (DCF) technique of estimating magnetic field strength from observations. The first technique that we describe in detail employs structure functions of velocity centroids and structure functions of Stokes parameters. We provide analytical expressions for obtaining magnetic field strength from observational data. We successfully test our results using synthetic observations obtained with results of MHD turbulence simulations. We measure velocity and magnetic field fluctuations at small scales using two, three and four point structure functions and compare the performance of these tools. We show that, unlike the DCF, our technique is capable of providing the detailed distribution of POS magnetic field and it can measure magnetic field strength in the presence of both velocity and magnetic field distortions arising from external shear and self-gravity. The second technique applies the velocity gradient technique to velocity channel maps in order to obtain the Alfven Mach number and uses the amplitudes of the gradients to obtain the sonic Mach number. The ratio of these two Mach numbers provides the intensity of magnetic field in the region contributing to the emission in the channel map. We test the technique and discuss obtaining the 3D distribution of POS galactic Magnetic field with it. Understanding how star formation is regulated requires studying the energy balance between turbulence, magnetic fields, stellar feedback, and gravity within molecular clouds. However, identifying the transition region where the gravity takes over remains elusive. Recent studies of the Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT), which is an advanced tool for magnetic field studies, reveal that the gradients of spectroscopic observables change their directions by 90 degrees with respect to the magnetic fields in the regions of gravitational collapse. In this study, we perform 3D MHD numerical simulations. We observe that star formation successfully proceeds in strongly magnetized and fully ionized media. We confirm that the self-gravity induces the change of gradients' orientation and high gradients' amplitude. We explore two ways of identifying collapsing self-gravitating regions through the double-peak feature in the histogram of gradients' orientation and the curvature of gradients. We show that velocity gradients' morphology and amplitude can be synthetically used to trace the convergent inflows. By comparing with the column density Probability Density Functions (N-PDFs) method, we show that VGT is a powerful new tool for studying the gas dynamics and tracing magnetic field in star-forming regions. By analogy with VGT, we extend the Intensity Gradient Technique (IGT) to locate the gravitational collapsing region and shocks. Externally driven interstellar turbulence plays an important role in shaping the density structure in molecular clouds. Here we study the dynamical role of internally driven turbulence in a self-gravitating molecular cloud core. Depending on the initial conditions and evolutionary stages, we find that a self-gravitating core in the presence of gravity-driven turbulence can undergo constant, decelerated, and accelerated infall, and thus has various radial velocity profiles. In the gravity-dominated central region, a higher level of turbulence results in a lower infall velocity, a higher density, and a lower mass accretion rate. As an important implication of this study, efficient reconnection diffusion of magnetic fields against the gravitational drag naturally occurs due to the gravity-driven turbulence, without invoking externally driven turbulence., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Magnetic reconnection, topological change in magnetic fields, is a fundamental process in magnetized plasmas. It is associated with energy release in regions of magnetic field annihilation, but this is only one facet of this process. Astrophysical flows normally have very large Reynolds numbers and are expected to be turbulent, in agreement with observations. In strong turbulence magnetic lines constantly reconnect everywhere at all scales, making magnetic reconnection an intrinsic part of turbulent cascade. We note that this is inconsistent with the usual practice of regarding magnetic lines as persistent dynamical elements. A number of theoretical, numerical, and observational studies, starting with Lazarian & Vishniac (1999), demonstrated that 3D turbulence makes magnetic reconnection fast and that these two processes are intrinsically connected. We discuss the dramatic violation of the textbook concept of magnetic flux-freezing in the presence of turbulence and demonstrate that in the presence of turbulence the plasma effects are subdominant to turbulence as far as the magnetic reconnection is concerned. This justifies an MHD-like treatment of magnetic reconnection at scales much larger than the relevant plasma scales. We discuss numerical and observational evidences supporting the turbulent reconnection model. In particular, we show that tearing reconnection is suppressed in 3D and, unlike the 2D case, the 3D reconnection induces turbulence that makes reconnection independent of resistivity. We show that turbulent reconnection dramatically affects the key astrophysical processes, e.g., star formation, turbulent dynamo, acceleration of cosmic rays. We provide criticism of the concept of "reconnection-mediated turbulence" and explain why turbulent reconnection is very different from enhanced turbulent resistivity and hyper-resistivity, and why the latter has fatal conceptual flaws., Comment: 94 pages, 39 figures

The observations of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background provide information about primordial inhomogeneities in the universe. However, the B-mode polarization of the inflationary gravitational wave is contaminated by the Galactic foreground polarized radiation arising from dust aligned by interstellar magnetic fields. To trace magnetic fields we use the Velocity Gradient Technique, which employs a modern understanding of the nature of magneto-hydrodynamics turbulent motions. In this paper, we combine the VGT with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to improve the accuracy of magnetic field tracing. We apply the VGT-PCA to the high-resolution neutral hydrogen data from the GALFA-HI survey to predict the polarization of dust. We report that the predicted directions of dust polarization provide good correspondence with those reported by Planck 353GHz, the alignment measure between the two AM=0.79. We show that our results statistically agree with the Planck polarization in terms of magnetic field tracing. We find that the variation of dust emission efficiency across the sky is small. Using our maps of predicted polarization we calculate the ratio of the E and B modes and show that BB/EE=0.53, which is similar to the result from Plank polarization., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

This paper studies how to employ synchrotron emission gradient techniques to reveal the properties of the magnetic field within the interstellar media. Based on data cubes of three-dimensional numerical simulations of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, we explore spatial gradients of synchrotron emission diagnostics to trace the direction of the magnetic field. According to our simulations, multifarious diagnostics for synchrotron emission can effectively determine the potential direction of projected magnetic fields. Applying the synergies of synchrotron diagnostic gradients to the archive data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, we find that multifarious diagnostic techniques make consistent predictions for the Galactic magnetic field directions. With the high-resolution data presently available from Low Frequency Array for radio astronomy and those in the future from the Square Kilometer Array, the synergies of synchrotron emission gradients are supposed to perform better in tracing the actual direction of interstellar magnetic fields, especially in the low-frequency Faraday rotation regime where traditional synchrotron polarization measure fails., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures and 4 tables. Over the last few years it became clear that turbulent magnetic reconnection and magnetized turbulence are inseparable. It was not only shown that reconnection is responsible for violating the frozen-in condition in turbulence, but also that stochastic reconnection in 3D generates turbulence by itself. The actual mechanism responsible for this driving is still unknown. Processes such tearing mode or Kelvin-Helmholtz, among other plasma instabilities, could generate turbulence from irregular current sheets. We address the nature of driving mechanism for this process and consider a relative role of tearing and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities for the process of turbulence generation. In particular, we analyze the conditions for development of these two instabilities within three-dimensional reconnection regions. We show that both instabilities can excite turbulence fluctuations in reconnection regions. However, tearing mode has relatively slow growth rate, and at later times it becomes partially suppressed by transverse to the current sheet component of magnetic field, generated during the growth of turbulent fluctuations. On the contrary, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability establishes quickly in the outflow region, and at later times it dominates the turbulence generation comparing to the contribution from tearing mode. Our results demonstrate that the tearing instability is subdominant compared to the the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in terms of generation of turbulence in the 3D reconnection layers and therefore the self-driven reconnection is turbulent reconnection with tearing instability being important only at the initial stage of the reconnection., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures
