Abstract Background Despite the successful efforts in controlling malaria in Vietnam, the disease remains a significant health concern, particularly in Central Vietnam. This study aimed to assess correlations between environmental, climatic, and socio-economic factors in the district with malaria cases. Methods The study was conducted in 15 provinces in Central Vietnam from January 2018 to December 2022. Monthly malaria cases were obtained from the Institute of Malariology, Parasitology, and Entomology Quy Nhon, Vietnam. Environmental, climatic, and socio-economic data were retrieved using a Google Earth Engine script. A multivariable Zero-inflated Poisson regression was undertaken using a Bayesian framework with spatial and spatiotemporal random effects with a conditional autoregressive prior structure. The posterior random effects were estimated using Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation with Gibbs sampling. Results There was a total of 5,985 Plasmodium falciparum and 2,623 Plasmodium vivax cases during the study period. Plasmodium falciparum risk increased by five times (95% credible interval [CrI] 4.37, 6.74) for each 1-unit increase of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) without lag and by 8% (95% CrI 7%, 9%) for every 1ºC increase in maximum temperature (TMAX) at a 6-month lag. While a decrease in risk of 1% (95% CrI 0%, 1%) for a 1 mm increase in precipitation with a 6-month lag was observed. A 1-unit increase in NDVI at a 1-month lag was associated with a four-fold increase (95% CrI 2.95, 4.90) in risk of P. vivax. In addition, the risk increased by 6% (95% CrI 5%, 7%) and 3% (95% CrI 1%, 5%) for each 1ºC increase in land surface temperature during daytime with a 6-month lag and TMAX at a 4-month lag, respectively. Spatial analysis showed a higher mean malaria risk of both species in the Central Highlands and southeast parts of Central Vietnam and a lower risk in the northern and north-western areas. Conclusion Identification of environmental, climatic, and socio-economic risk factors and spatial malaria clusters are crucial for designing adaptive strategies to maximize the impact of limited public health resources toward eliminating malaria in Vietnam.

Background and Aim: In Central Vietnam, Anopheles dirus and Anopheles minimus are the primary malaria vector species. These Anopheles spp.’ distribution and prevalence are determined by environmental, climatic, and socioeconomic conditions. This study aimed to predict the potential distribution of these two Anopheles spp. in this region. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in 15 Central Vietnamese provinces. From 2014 to 2018, we utilized An. dirus and An. minimus presence records. Proxy data from the Google Earth Engine platform for the study area, encompassing environmental, climatic, and socioeconomic factors. MaxEnt software predicted the potential environmental, climatic, and socioeconomic suitability of these two Anopheles spp. in Central Vietnam. Results: The test area under the curve values for An. dirus and An. minimus MaxEnt models averaged 0.801 and 0.806, respectively, showing excellent performance. Minimum air temperature had the greatest impact on the distribution of both species. A negative correlation between precipitation and normalized difference water index influences the occurrence of An. dirus. In the temperature range of 13–19.5°C, An. minimus is most likely to be present, with nighttime light detrimentally influencing its distribution. The Central Highlands region is inhabited by both species, with some presence in North-Central and South-Central Coastal areas. Conclusion: The importance of temperature in determining the presence of both species is emphasized by our findings, with subtle differences in the temperature-related factors shaping their distributions. The results highlight the need for focused malaria vector control and surveillance initiatives in the study area.

The pursuit of an academic career has been characterised by competition and precarity, which can negatively impact individuals' academic aspirations. This paper examines academic aspirations of doctoral candidates by providing an in-depth analysis of their career prospects using Weber's notions of 'inward calling' and 'academic hazards'. It draws on qualitative research using semi-structured interview data with 32 aspiring academics, who are doctoral candidates at a research-intensive university in Australia. The paper discusses the 'essence of academia' that underpins 'inward calling' and is central to aspiring academics' motivation. Findings suggest a range of 'academic hazards' that aspiring academics expect to encounter in their academic pursuit. Despite the perceived challenges, aspiring academics distance themselves from an idealised 'golden' past, and demonstrate an acceptance of and adaptation to the current situation. The paper concludes by discussing some implications for improving the attractiveness of the academic profession in Australia.

The perception of universities as trustworthy institutions has been challenged by heightened public distrust in science and public institutions. In this context, understanding trust relationships between higher education institutions and society could provide vital intelligence to safeguard and grow the increasingly disrupted higher education sector. The article presents a systematic review of empirical studies that focus on trust in higher education institutions. It aims to map research trends and empirical gaps to provide insights into the state of research in this area. The review found that most research has examined trust within the university context, with significantly less attention on trust between the universities and the broader societies they serve. Within the latter, trust relationships with business and industry domains have received greater empirical attention than those with community and government. These findings have implications for purposeful and meaningful trust-based capacity and capability building at individual and institutional levels.

Gnetum formosum Markgr., a member of the Gnetaceae family, is distributed in Vietnam. This plant remains a botanical enigma with an unexplored diversity of chemical constituents and pharmacological effects. In this study, two new steroidal saponins, namely gnetumosides A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the aerial parts of G. formosum. Their chemical structures were elucidated using spectroscopic techniques, including high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) and NMR, along with chemical hydrolysis and comparison with the reported literature. The potential anti-inflammatory effects of the isolated compounds were evaluated by measuring lipopolysaccharide-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production in murine macrophage cells. Notably, compound 1 exhibited the most potent inhibitory activity (IC50 = 14.10 ± 0.75 µM), comparable to dexamethasone. Additionally, the mechanisms underlying the observed anti-inflammatory effects were investigated through molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations on inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) proteins. This study is the first to investigate the chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of G. formosum.

Over the last two to three decades, many universities around the world have seen an increase in both organizational autonomy and performance-based accountability. While these developments have attracted considerable attention, relatively little remains known about how, within this transformed governance context, academics themselves practice their autonomy as researchers. Focusing on the case of one highly research-intensive university situated in Australia, this paper explores how academics from various disciplines understand and experience their practical autonomy in their own research in both its strategic and operational dimensions. Drawing on analyses of semi-structured interviews with 18 experienced academics, we find that academics' practical autonomy is only loosely coupled to the autonomy they formally have. We further find that the practical realization of autonomy is closely associated with having adequate levels of resources such as funding (strategic autonomy) and time (operational autonomy), with the former being more important for scientists, while the latter was more important for those in the humanities and social sciences. Increasing levels of bureaucratization (humanities and social sciences) and the increasingly narrow thematic focus and strategic orientation of the major funding schemes (sciences and social sciences) were perceived as constraining these academics' practical autonomy.

How mammalian cells regulate their physical size is currently poorly understood, in part due to the difficulty in accurately quantifying cell volume in a high-throughput manner. Here, using the fluorescence exclusion method, we demonstrate that the mechanosensitive transcriptional regulators YAP (Yes-associated protein) and TAZ (transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif) are regulators of single-cell volume. The role of YAP/TAZ in volume regulation must go beyond its influence on total cell cycle duration or cell shape to explain the observed changes in volume. Moreover, for our experimental conditions, volume regulation by YAP/TAZ is independent of mTOR. Instead, we find that YAP/TAZ directly impacts the cell division volume, and YAP is involved in regulating intracellular cytoplasmic pressure. Based on the idea that YAP/TAZ is a mechanosensor, we find that inhibiting myosin assembly and cell tension slows cell cycle progression from G1 to S. These results suggest that YAP/TAZ may be modulating cell volume in combination with cytoskeletal tension during cell cycle progression.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were successfully synthesized by a green method using rosin and zinc chloride as salt precursors. The phase structure, morphology, and particle size of ZnO were determined by X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The fabricated ZnO NP samples are crystalline with a grain size of 30–100 nm. The ZnO NPs were used as catalysts for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) under visible and UV light. The results indicate that the prepared ZnO material excellently removed MB and MO (cinitial = 10 mg/L) with efficiencies of 100% and 82.78%, respectively, after 210 min under UV radiation with a ZnO NP dose of 2 g/L. The photocatalyst activity of the synthesized material was also tested under visible light radiation with the same conditions; however, it achieved lower efficiencies. In addition, ZnO NPs were also tested regarding their antibacterial activity, and the results showed that the prepared ZnO samples had the highest (i.e., 100%) antibacterial efficiency against E. coli.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in patients with endometriosis and identify related factors that may influence treatment outcomes. Methods: This retrospective descriptive study was conducted between November 2018 and November 2022. The study group comprised individuals who were diagnosed with endometriosis (endometrioma and/or adenomyosis) indicated for in vitro fertilization. The control group (129 patients with 249 cycles), which included patients without endometriosis and had an equivalent mean age as the study group patients. Results: In the endometriosis group, the quantities of retrieved oocytes and Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) were reduced compared to the control group. The overall dose of gonadotropin and the duration of ovarian stimulation were significantly higher than the control group. The endometriosis group exhibited a Metaphase II (MII) oocyte rate of 82.3% and an oocyte fertilization rate of 82.2%. However, in patients with endometriosis, the rates of implantation, clinical pregnancy, and ongoing pregnancy were significantly lower than in patients without endometriosis. Besides, the clinical pregnancy rate of women with endometriosis was remarkably higher in the groups with maternal age ⩽35 years, a ratio of Follicle-stimulating Hormone to Luteinizing Hormone (FSH/LH) ⩽1.5, and over 10 retrieved oocytes. Conclusion: Endometriosis was associated with a decreased rate of implantation, clinical pregnancy, and ongoing pregnancy after in vitro fertilization treatment compared with patients without endometriosis. In vitro fertilization outcomes in patients with endometriosis were influenced by maternal age ⩽35 years, FSH/LH ratio ⩽1.5, and number of retrieved oocytes over 10. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a real -- albeit rare -- test for human and organisational resilience worldwide, including those in the higher education sector. In this paper, I reflect on my observations of the pandemic's impacts that have rippled through the university sector in Australia in the first three quarters of 2020. The pandemic has not only heightened existing issues in universities, such as the tensions between university management, union, and part of university staff, but also posed new ones, such as supporting doctoral students to overcome research disruptions at an unprecedented scale. In terms of supporting doctoral students, the case of the University of Melbourne, one of the largest Australian universities, shows that there are still hidden issues even with a relatively flexible approach based on good intention. Given the uncertainties caused by the pandemic, the sustainability and effectiveness of the university's current support measures remain to be seen.

During curcumin production in Vietnam, curcumin-removed turmeric oleoresin (CRTO) has been considered as a by-product. It costs to treat the by-product to prevent environmental pollution. In this study, the by-product was utilized as an active ingredient for preparing a botanical fungicide-based nano-emulsion and evaluated for its in vitro and in vivo control efficacy against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, a causal agent of anthracnose of litchi, in the laboratory as well as a field trial. The nano-emulsion is colloidally stable and uniform with particle sizes of 95–250 nm. CRTO nano-emulsion significantly affected various Colletotrichum species. Notably, this nano-emulsion showed potent inhibition for the mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides and solidly suppressed the development of anthracnose on litchi fruits. In the in vitro inhibition test, the equivalent half-maximal inhibitory concentration of CRTO in nano-formulation was 0.11 mg·mL−1, which was 3.0× and 6.1× lower than IC50 values of CRTO alone (0.33 mg·mL−1) and a mixture of curcuminoids (0.48 mg·mL−1), respectively. In the field trial, the litchi anthracnose infection was effectively controlled by nano-formulation. These results suggest that CRTO nano-emulsion could be used as an alternative to harmful synthetic fungicides to control anthracnose on litchi fruits.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of customer immersive experience on attitude and adoption intention toward mobile augmented reality applications (MAR apps). This paper also examines the moderating role of technology anxiety on the relationship between immersive experience on attitude and adoption intention toward MAR apps. A dataset of 322 customers and the partial least square structural equation model (PLS-SEM) with the SmartPLS 3.2.8 statistical software were used to test the proposed hypotheses. The results show that immersive experience significantly affects attitude and adoption intention toward MAR apps. In addition, the vital role of technology anxiety in moderating the relationship between customer immersive experience and their responses toward MAR apps is revealed.

Objective: The correlation between anatomy features of impacted mandibular third molars (M3Ms) and prevalence of pericoronitis was only interpreted using univariate analysis. This study investigated this correlation using multivariable analysis to determine the relationship between pericoronitis prevalence and the M3Ms' anatomical features. Methods: This cross‐sectional study recruited 245 patients with 338 impacted M3Ms. One researcher collected participants' demographic characteristics such as sexes, age, side, and pericoronitis condition. The radiographic characteristics of M3Ms, including eruption direction and impacted levels according to Pell–Gregory classification, were assessed based on their orthopantomograms. Initially, univariate analyses were used to determine potential demographic and radiographic factors that correlated to pericoronitis. These factors were, then, analyzes using Firth's logistic regression. Results: No significant difference was found between non‐ and pericoronitis groups about sexes, age, side (p > 0.05). The univariate analyses showed that proportion of vertical impacted levels and eruption direction of M3Ms were significantly different between non‐ and pericoronitis groups. Firth's logistic regression analysis indicated that M3Ms with impacted level A were more likely to suffer from pericoronitis than ones at level B (odds ratio (OR) = 3.34), wheraes M3Ms impacted level II had higher risk of pericorinitis than ones at level I (OR = 1.63). Vertical M3Ms were more likely to develop pericoronitis than horizontal (OR = 5.78) ones. Conclusion: M3M angulation and impacted level are significant factors relating to pericoronitis prevalence. M3Ms with vertical eruption, vertically level A, and horizontally level B are more likely to have pericoronitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although there are different ways to estimate the value of the illicit drug markets, the main issue remains that one cannot estimate the unseized or floating value of drugs at the country- and international-level markets. This study applies a novel estimation method that combines excess compensation estimation (from the financial field) and stochastic frontier analysis (from the operations research field) to estimate the value of the international cocaine market in 2019. Our estimations show that in 2019, the unseized market accounted for 32.16 % of the total market of cocaine and was smaller than the ratio of 48 % in 2007, indicating that the effectiveness of countries in disrupting the illicit cocaine market has improved. More importantly, we show that improvement in dealing with money laundering risks could also help reduce the illicit market of cocaine since illicit cocaine/drug proceeds must be laundered before they can be used by criminal organisations. Purpose: This study aims to develop and propose an integrated conceptual framework that illustrates how emerging technologies such as mobile augmented reality applications (MAR apps) stimulate a user's immersive MAR app-enhanced experience—a human psychological state of being engaged and engrossed in a virtual environment—which in turn facilitates user responses. Design/methodology/approach: This study draws on a literature review of related fields to develop a theoretical model showing the centrality of the immersive MAR app-enhanced experience. Findings: A conceptual model that explicates the selected antecedents and outcomes of the AR-enhanced immersive experience is proposed. The findings suggest that the traits of both the user (mental imagery, personal innovativeness) and the device (simulated physical control, environmental embedding) facilitate the immersive MAR app-enhanced experience. Moreover, the immersive MAR app-enhanced experience is identified as a key driver of customer emotions, values and behavioral responses. Originality/value: The integrated conceptual model provides scholars and practitioners with a general picture of the main factors affecting the immersive AR-enhanced experience, as well as the benefits available to firms; thus, theoretical and practical implications are delineated. In this study, carbon-encapsulated hematite nanocubes with an edge length of ~20 nm (α-Fe2O3@C) were prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method using glucose as a carbon source. The α-Fe2O3@C nanocomposite was found to exhibit enhanced adsorption efficiency for inorganic chromium (VI) ions as compared to bare α-Fe2O3 nanocubes. At optimized conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of Cr(VI) using α-Fe2O3@C nanocomposites were 76.92 mg g−1 and 97.6%. The influence of carbon content on the structural features, and on the mechanism of adsorption of the α-Fe2O3@C nanocomposites were investigated and discussed. Adsorption data revealed that the adsorption behavior of the α-Fe2O3@C nanocomposites for chromium (VI) showed good agreement with both Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Moreover, the α-Fe2O3@C nanocomposites still retain high chromium (VI) removal efficiency after three recycles. Carbon-encapsulated hematite nanocubes with high Cr(VI) removal efficiency and excellent regenerability will become a promising absorbent toward the treatment of heavy metals from water solution.
