Abstract

Generative adversarial networks (or GANs) are a specific deep learning architecture often used for different usages, such as data generation or image-to-image translation. In recent years, this structure has gained increased popularity and has been used in different fields. One area of expertise currently in vogue is the use of GANs to produce synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, and especially expand training datasets for SAR automatic target recognition (ATR). In effect, the complex SAR image formation makes these kind of data rich in information, leading to the use of deep networks in deep learning-based methods. Yet, deep networks also require sufficient data for training. However, contrary to optical images, we generally do not have a substantial number of available SAR images because of their acquisition and labelling cost; GANs are then an interesting tool. Concurrently, how to improve explainability for SAR ATR deep neural networks and how to make their reasoning more transparent have been increasingly explored as model opacity deteriorates trust of users. This paper aims at reviewing how GANs are used with SAR images, but also giving perspectives on how GANs could be used to improve interpretability and explainability of SAR classifiers. Abstract

A parametric test based on moving average (MA) model is proposed that is suitable for signals having finite-length autocorrelation function or null values of spectral density. The performances and drawbacks of the parametric tests and the nonparametric ones are discussed with respect to the robustness of the indexes and to the difference between the theoretical and estimated laws under the hypothesis of linearity.

21. Study of the SAR signature of internal waves by nonlinear parametric autoregressive models

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the nonlinear differential equation governing the propagation of internal waves (IWs) in a stratified water column of the ocean. This estimation of the kind of nonlinear differential equation and the coefficients of this equation is performed from profiles of the synthetic aperture radar signature at the ocean surface. Theoretically, the equation is based upon the Korteveg-de Vries (KdV) equation or one of its improved versions. The estimation of the differential equation version is based on nonlinear polynomial autoregressive models up to the third order. The estimation of the parameters of these models is performed simply by solving a set of linear equations using higher order statistics. This general approach allows us to identify the best model of propagation, i.e., the kind of nonlinearity as well as the structure of each kernel (linear, quadratic, cubic), without determining an analytic solution to the equation of propagation. Moreover, the physical oceanic parameters (such as the thermocline depth) are deduced from the estimated coefficients of the KdV equation (assuming an underlying model of the water column). Results on simulated profiles generally lead to an exact model identification (i.e., the one used for simulation with the exact order of nonlinearity and the exact structure of each kernel) and lead to satisfying geophysical parameter estimates. Finally, the geophysical parameters estimated from three sets of ERS-1 profiles are generally coherent with the parameters observed in the IW propagation mechanism but have not been validated by 'in situ' measurements. National audience; Dans cet article nous développons un filtre Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) pour le pistage de cibles étendues multiples à partir de signaux issus d'un réseau linéaire de capteurs. Dans ce contexte, les signaux des cibles peuvent présenter une dispersion angulaire au niveau de l'antenne, à cause notamment de phénomènes de rétrodiffusion. L'ensemble des cibles observées est modélisé par un processus ponctuel marqué, ce qui permet de gérer un nombre variable des cibles au cours du temps. On propose ici une technique de suivi par filtrage particulaire auxiliaire de la fonction d'intensité du processus ponctuel et on montre son intérêt pratique par rapport à l'état de l'art.

Abstract

International audience; Co-integration relationships among commodities are well established in various econometric studies. However their applications in derivatives pricing and risk-management remain to be challenging. Nakajima and Ohashi (2012) have been derived futures and call option prices under a co-integration version of the famous Gibson-Schwartz model. It arises that the prices under co-integration are actually given by very long formulas and involve technical and arduous computations. Our purpose in this work is to revisit the price of futures contract obtained by these two authors, with three main objectives: 1) to provide a price with an easily understandable statement form, 2) to perform very detailed proof, ensuring the result to be less error prone, 3) to implement the corresponding R-code, allowing the reader to benefit directly from the pricing formula. The form of price derived in this work has also the power to be workable for further explorations as in commodity portfolio risk measurement and hedging.

Abstract

International audience; The performance evaluation of information processing algorithms has been studied for a long time. Recent technological advances continued to increase the efficiency of these algorithms in specific application contexts. Meanwhile, the evaluation of complex information systems, for example, information fusion systems (IFS), remains a very difficult task even today. One of the main causes of this difficulty is the need to integrate and process a continuously increasing number of heterogeneous information sources. From an information consumer point of view, that is, the end user of the IFS, the information and the quality of information are of great importance. Therefore, he or she needs information accompanied by a degree of confidence, corresponding to the capacity of the IFS to deliver the right information, at the right time and in the right format. In this chapter, we propose the tracking of the information quality evolution through the system, as a possible solution to evaluate the information proposed to the end user.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we propose a novel Track Before Detect (TBD) filter aimed at tracking multiple extended targets from phased-array observations. For extended targets, the source signal is angularly distributed, and hence we track the centroid Direction Of Arrival (DOA) of the target generated signal - called target signal. In this work we suppose known the shape and extent of the target-signal angular spread. Solutions based on extending the system state, to include the target signal, lead to higher-dimensional posteriors. We avoid an extended state by using a novel Marked Poisson Point Process (MPPP) model for the system, and accordingly, we derive the intensity/PHD filter that adaptively estimates target number and corresponding centroid DOAs. The source signals are interpreted as the mark of a target, and they are analytically integrated in the update formula of the filter. Therefore, an efficient particle filter implementation is possible. Results on simulated data showcase the improved results of the proposed filter over state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we propose a robust, track before detect particle filtering algorithm for tracking the direction of arrival (DOA) of multiple echoes impinging on a sonar array. We also provide a real data application of our filter for underwater 3 dimensional (3-D) scene reconstruction, i.e. bathymetry. Shallow water environments generally involve multi-path propagation channels. Coupled with impulsive, heavy-tailed backscattered signals it generates spurious estimates. To counteract this situation, particle filtering enables taking into account the impulsive nature of signals and regularizing the DOA trajectories by means of state-space description. For a specific double target tracking scenario, an automatic target detection and initialization scheme is presented. The state-space description incorporates and merges the available prior information on the imaged scene. The derived filter is shown to provide better performances when compared to classical array processing methods for the considered remote sensing application.

Abstract

International audience; An information system not providing a confidence degree in the proposed information is in danger of not being properly used. The traditional procedure in evaluating the performances of a system is to consider it as a black box and to analyze its results to different stimulus. Unfortunately, in a changing environment and/or in the case of scalable systems (e.g. updates, new processing techniques available) the previous analyze is no longer reliable. To overcome this problem, we propose a new methodology based on the decomposition of the information system in its elementary modules. In order to be able to directly evaluate the system performances, we make use of two quality views. The first one, local quality, describes the information in the input and the output of each module. The second one, global quality, describes the information proposed to the decision maker. The idea behind this double level quality evaluation is that the local quality (much easier to be evaluated than the global one) can be used to directly estimate the global quality. For passing from local quality to global quality, we introduce the notion of quality transfer function. This function is analogous with the transfer function from signal processing domain and it is particular to each processing module. It has the role of capturing the module influence over the information quality. Characterizing a processing module by the means of a quality transfer function allows a direct connection between the input quality and the output quality. Employing in practice our methodology allows having an instantaneous quality estimation of the information proposed by the information system.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we derive the backscattering coefficient/forward propagation equation for frequency modulated waves of an HF radar over the sea. Numerical simulations have been performed in order to compare the characteristics of a constant frequency and frequency modulated EM wave in function of the sea state and index profile. From these simulations, we have drawn some conclusion on the differences in the Doppler spectrum observed for the two waveforms.

International audience; Remote sensing the seabed has become an indispensable issue for marine environmental studies. Acoustic technologies are the more efficient and cost effective devices to achieve this task. Among these technologies, single-beam echo-sounders (SBES) are widely used because they are inexpensive, practical and non invasive. Moreover, the data recorded by SBES can be calibrated and may be used to automatically classify and to characterize the seabed. Many studies exist on this subject and first, authors point out that existing seabed classification methods from SBES data suffer from misclassification due to artefacts. Indeed, the recorded acoustic signal not only depends on seabed types but also on characteristics of the acquisition system, the propagation medium and the morphology (depth, slope) of the seafloor. Then, several authors have concluded that standard approaches of seabed classification are not optimal. According to a recent paper, the cause of the problem is that the approaches lack physical bases. Most approaches use discriminating features synthesized with statistical data analysis methods such as principal component analysis and thus with no link with the physical phenomenon. Thus, in this paper, we investigate a methodology of seabed classification based on the physical properties of the backscattered acoustic signal. A physical model is used to generate echoes for various types of seabed, in different configuration of depth and slope. A study is carried out to assess the effect of the pre-processing steps (echoes averaging, depth and slope) on echoes. Then, features are extracted from echoes based on previous studies and new features are proposed. Finally, from the linear discriminant analysis, a linear combination of features is found independent of the slope and the depth.

International audience; In this paper, we present the results of time-reversal measurement protocolverification for focusing the backscattered energy from a buried point scatterer located in an inhomogeneous medium using low frequency. Firstly, we shortly introduce the soil electromagnetic model (based on geological and hydraulic properties) that allows to simulate the electromagnetic wave propagation in an inhomogeneous medium. Secondly, the time-reversal measurement protocol composed of three stages, i.e. forward probing, time-reversal operation and time-reversal probing, is presented and performed by numerical simulations.

Abstract

International audience; Advances in new information and communication technology have considerably increased the quantity of available data and permitted the implementation of more and more complex processing techniques. As a result of these changes it appeared the need of evaluating the information fusion system quality and to propose to the user the information accompanied with confidence coefficients. The information fusion systems used nowadays are complex systems that are difficult to be evaluated. To overcome this problem we propose a new quality evaluation methodology based on the decomposition of the information fusion system in its elementary modules that allows the evaluation of the quality at two levels. The first one (global) that describes the entire information fusion system and the second one (local) for each elementary module. As data and information change over time, this decomposition allows to directly evaluate the global quality of the information fusion system using the local quality evaluation.
