Background LMICs account for approximately 87% of all new TB cases. Effective TB management is vital if the global end TB goals are to be achieved by 2035. The role of digital health (DH) interventions in achieving these goals are pertinent. TB treatment adherence is considered to be critical not only in successful eradication of the disease, but also in the containment of drug-resistant strains of the disease. This review set out to assess the effect of DH interventions on TB patient treatment adherence in LMICs. Methods A systematic review was conducted by searching various databases (Pubmed, Scopus, EBSCOhost Web of Science) as well as grey literature sources for literature incorporating randomized controlled trials (RCTs), cohort, or cross-sectional studies which assessed DH interventions aimed at improving TB patient treatment adherence within LMICs. Studies were included if they were reported primary outcomes related to patient treatment adherence and were published in English before 30 November 2020. The risk of bias was independently assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool. Results Out of the 1030 articles identified through the databases, 41 articles were full text screened and eleven included in the synthesis of this review. Seven studies utilized text-based reminders, two employed electronic medication monitors, and two employed call reminders, and one involved video observed therapy (VOT). Grouped analysis of all included studies yielded a marginal improvement in positive patient treatment outcomes (RR 1.05, 95% CI 1.02 - 1.09). Conclusion DH interventions show promise in improving patient adherence and positive treatment outcomes. Current available literature remains scarce and of questionable quality. Studies incorporating a patient-centred approach which is executed according to standardized implementation procedures and outcome assessment is required.

The Maastrichtian-Danian transgression was one of the most extensive Atlantic-derived marine incursions in Patagonia. This study examines its stratigraphic record and origin in the Magallanes-Austral Basin, revealing an interplay of sedimentation, tectonism, and base-level changes, which contribute to our understanding of foreland basin dynamics. We present a multidisciplinary approach from a relatively poorly documented sector (51°38’-53°50’S) of the basin. This approach includes facies and provenance analysis, palynology, sequence stratigraphy, and U-Pb geochronology. These techniques enable us to evaluate the role of climate, tectonics, and eustasy on the transgression, as well as providing insight into the growth of the Southern Patagonian Andes. A first shallowing-upward cycle (late Campanian to late Maastrichtian) is represented by the transition from outer shelf and upper slope deposits (Fuentes and Tres Pasos formations) to shoreface and deltaic environments (Rocallosa and Dorotea formations), favoured by high erosion rates in the fold-thrust belt and eustatic sea-level drop. A subsequent deepening-upward cycle (late Maastrichtian to Paleocene) records the Atlantic transgression, manifested by estuarine deposits in an incised valley (uppermost Dorotea Formation) and deep-water turbidites (Chorrillo Chico Formation and Cabo Naríz beds). Palynological results suggest a temperate palaeoclimate (~6-17°C) during the Maastrichtian-Danian, which agrees with significant cooling of the South Atlantic Ocean at this time. Therefore, relative climatic optima are not a driver of marine ingression. The stratigraphic and tectonic evolution of the succession studied suggests that flexural and dynamic subsidence promoted marine incursion into the Magallanes-Austral Basin. Provenance data indicate sediment input to the basin from the Southern Patagonian Batholith, Rocas Verdes Basin remnants, Tobífera Formation, and metamorphic terranes exposed in the hinterland of the Southern Patagonian Andes during the early Maastrichtian. However, by the Paleocene, sediments derived from the hinterland had been structurally dammed during basinward propagation of the fold-thrust belt.

The Sierra Baguales Mountain Range, forming the eastern foothills of the Southern Patagonian Andes, has well-developed alpine-glaciated landforms which present an ideal opportunity to study climatic and non-climatic factors that control cirque development and morphology. One hundred and forty-three glacial cirques were studied with reference to 14 morphometric attributes which were analyzed using statistical analysis and GIS methodologies. The cirques were classified into two types using cluster analysis complimented with a composite map based on the attributes, the latter technique that is applied to glacial cirque analysis for the first time. Type 1 cirques are associated with glacial processes isolated from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field (SPIF), developed under locally cold and dry climatic conditions. Type 2 glacial cirques are associated with older, more extensive glacial processes controlled by regional-scale climate variables and the presence of the Pleistocene Ice Sheet. The results show that the development of most of the glacial cirques has been controlled mainly by their aspect, exposure to solar radiation, Southern Hemisphere Westerly winds, and cirque floor slope. Finally, we concluded that our analyses show the evolution of cirques in the Sierra Baguales Mountain Range was not uniform. Cirque glaciers that developed to the west, close to the Southern Patagonian Ice field, have been more dynamic, and therefore their cirques experienced more erosion than those located to the east. RESUMEN El cordón montañoso de Sierra Baguales, estribación oriental de Los Andes Patagónicos, muestra evidencia del desarrollo de circos glaciales de tipo alpino, morfologías características del relieve de montaña, cuyo desarrollo puede ser controlado por variables climáticas y no climáticas. El área de estudio representa por tanto, un sitio ideal para estimar aquellos factores que controlaron el desarrollo de glaciaciones confinadas a circos glaciales. Ciento cuarenta y tres de estos circos fueron estudiados considerando 14 atributos morfométricos, los que fueron analizados mediante el uso de Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) y metodologías estadísticas. Un análisis estadístico de tipo “cluster”, complementado con el desarrollo de un mapa compuesto, técnica aplicada por primera vez en el análisis de circos glaciales, permitió diferenciar dos tipos ellos: El Tipo 1 representa circos aislados de la influencia del Campo de Hielo Sur, desarrollados bajo condiciones climáticas frías y secas, de carácter local. El Tipo 2 representa circos asociados a glaciaciones más extensas y antiguas, donde los glaciares evolucionaron bajo condiciones climáticas de escala regional y la influencia del Campo de Hielo Sur. Los resultados muestran que la evolución de los circos glaciares del tipo alpino fue controlada por factores tales como la exposición de los glaciares a la radiación solar y a los vientos del oeste (Westerlies), además de la pendiente del piso de los circos glaciales. El desarrollo de estos circos glaciales no fue uniforme, puesto que los glaciares alpinos más cercanos al Campo de Hielo Sur fueron más masivos y dinámicos en comparación con aquellos ubicados hacia el oriente de la estribación andina.

The mega-breccia at Homitos, northern Chile, was recently re-interpreted as a mass flow deposit caused by cliff failure, without any link to a tsunami backwash or the Eltanin meteorite impact at 2.5 Ma. While agreeing with the latter in the light of new microbiological data, it is here argued that mass flow can also be caused by tsunami backwash events and would be difficult to distinguish from those caused by gravity alone, especially as the Hornitos outcrop is of limited extent. However, a mechanism for downward dyke injection can be postulated for tsunami-related mass flows, but would not be applicable to normal debris flows generated by cliff collapse. The new age range of the Portada Formation coincides with similar deposits at Carrizalillo, Ranquil, Caldera and possibly Caleta Verde, suggesting that one or more mega-tsunamis might have struck the Chilean coastline during the Messinian.

Sin embargo, se puede postular un mecanismo por la inyección de diques hacia abajo en el caso de flujos relacionados con los tsunamis, que no será válido para flujos de masa generados por el colapso de acantilados. El nuevo rango de edad para la Formación Portada coincide con los rangos de depósitos similares en Carrizalillo, Ranquil, Caldera y posiblemente Caleta Verde, lo que sugiere que uno o más megatsunamis azotaron las costas chilenas durante el Mesiniano.

A succession of marine and continental strata on the southern flank of Cerro Cono in the Sierra Baguales, northeast of Torres del Paine, can be correlated with stratigraphic units exposed along the southern border of the Lago Argentino region in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. These include the Estancia 25 de Mayo Formation and the basal part of the Santa Cruz Formation. The lithological correlation is also confirmed by detrital zircon ages (maximum age of 18.23±0.26 Ma) and a rich assemblage of terrestrial vertebrate fossils, biostratigraphically equivalent to a post-Colhuehuapian, pre-Santacrucian South American Land Mammal Age (SALMA) fauna, suggesting a range of 19 to 17.8 Ma. Similar ages have been obtained from the basal part of the Santa Cruz Formation at Estancia Quién Sabe in southwestern Argentina, supporting the assumption of a regional continuity between these deposits. A measured lithostratigraphic column is presented and the depositional environment is interpreted as a coastal plain with small, meandering rivers and ephemeral floodplain lakes. The sedimentation coincides with intensified uplift of the Patagonian Andes during the 'Quechua Phase' of Andean tectonism, which is reflected by a change in paleocurrent directions from northwest to east-northeast. Una sucesión de estratos marinos y continentales en el flanco meridional del cerro Cono, en la sierra Baguales, al noreste de Torres del Paine, se correlaciona con estratos al sur de la región de lago Argentino en la Provincia de Santa Cruz, República Argentina. Estas unidades incluyen la Formación Estancia 25 de Mayo y la parte basal de la Formación Santa Cruz. La correlación litológica es, además, confirmada por datación de circones detríticos (edad máxima de 18,23±0,26 Ma) y un variado ensamble de vertebrados fósiles terrestres de edad post-Colhuehuapense a pre-Santacrucense en la escala de Edades Mamífero Sudamericanas (EMAS), con un rango temporal de entre 19 a 17,8 Ma. Edades similares han sido reportadas para la parte basal de la Formación Santa Cruz, en estancia Quién Sabe, en el suroeste de Argentina, ratificando la continuidad regional entre estos depósitos. Se presenta una columna estratigráfica y se interpreta el ambiente de depositación como una llanura costera con pequeños ríos sinuosos y lagos efímeros. La edad de sedimentación coincide con el solevantamiento de los Andes Patagónicos durante la 'Fase Quechua', lo que se ve reflejado por un cambio en la dirección de las paleocorrientes desde el noroeste hacia el este-noreste.

The age of the Navidad Formation in central Chile has always been controversial, mainly due to the conflicting age ranges indicated by its macro- and microfossils. Macrofossils are generally interpreted as having been reworked from older, Early to Middle Miocene strata, whereas a Late Miocene-Pliocene age has been accepted on the basis of planktonic foraminifer index species. The results of this study, however, indicate that the macrofossils occur in situ, which necessitates a complete revision of the geochronological data. It is concluded that the evidence for an Early to Middle Miocene age is overwhelming, and that the planktonic foraminifer index species must have appeared in the SE Pacific earlier than elsewhere. These include Globoturborotalia apertura, Globorotalia puncticulata (Deshayes), Globorotalia spheriomizea (Walters), Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (Ehrenberg), and Neogloboquadrina acostaensis (Blow). An Early to Middle Miocene age for the Navidad Formation correlates well with a reinterpretation of its depo-sitional environment as a continental shelf instead of a deepwater continental slope, global and regional paleoclimatic events, and the tectonic development of the Andes Range. La edad de la Formación Navidad en Chile central siempre ha sido controversial, debido a los distintos rangos de edad indicados por los macro- y microfósiles. En general, se considera que los macro-fósiles han sido retrabajados de estratos del Mioceno Temprano a Medio, y se aceptó una edad miocena tardía para esta unidad sobre la base de especies indicadoras de foraminíferos planctónicos. Sin embargo, los resultados de este estudio indican que los macrofósiles ocurren in situ, lo cual hace necesario una revisión completa de los datos geocronológicos. Se concluye que la evidencia por una edad miocena temprana a media es contundente, y que los foraminíferos planctónicos que indicarían una edad miocena tardía aparecieron más temprano en el SE del océano Pacífico que en otras partes. Estos foraminíferos incluyen Globoturborotalia apertura, Globorotalia puncticulata (Deshayes), Globorotalia spheriomizea (Walters), Neogloboquadrinapachyderma (Ehrenberg), y Neogloboquadrina acostaensis (Blow). Una edad miocena temprana a mediana correlaciona bien con la reinterpretación del ambiente deposicional como una plataforma continental en vez de un talud continental con agua profunda, eventos paleoclimáticos reconocidos a escala global y regional, y el desarrollo tectónico de los Andes.

We present new data on the paleoichthyology, paleobotany and radiometric results of the Loreto Formation in the Brunswick Peninsula of southernmost Chile, that allow us to propose a Late Eocene age. The rich diversity of fossil cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii) recognized in upper levels of this unit includes the taxa Carcharías aff. 'hopef (Agassiz), Odontaspis sp., Carcharoides catticus (Philippi), Striatolamia macrota (Agassiz), Anomotodon sp., Macrorhizoduspraecursor (Leriche), Galeorhinus sp., Abdounia sp., Hexanchus sp., Squatina sp., Hexanchidae indet.,Myliobatis sp., Myliobatoidea indet., and Ischyodus dolloi Leriche. This assemblage has clear ecological affinities with Eocene Tethyan fauna previously described in the Northern Hemisphere, and also has common elements with Eocene cartilaginous fishes from Antarctica. Additionally, a paleobotanic study of this unit identified leaf imprints ofAsplenium sp., Pteris sp., Podocarpus sp., and abundant angiosperms including Nothofagus lanceolata Dusén, N. simplicidens Dusén, N. variabilis Dusén, N. cf. alessandri Espinosa, N. subferruginea (Dusén), Hydrangea sp. and Phyllites spp. Wood remains of Nothofagoxylon scalariforme Gothan and Araucariaceae cf. Araucarioxylon Kraus were also identified. Additionally, pollen grains indicate gymnosperms and angiosperms: Podocarpidites otagoensis Couper, Retitricolpites sp., Tricolpites sp., Liliacidites sp., Polyporina sp., Nothofagidites cincta Cookson, and Nothofagidites cranwellae Couper, having affinities with Eocene florae, and being consistent with the age of the fossil fishes. Finally, a SHRIMP U-Th-Pb analysis of two samples collected from the studied beds provided thirty-eight and sixty zircon grains, indicating a clear main peak at 36.48±0.47 Ma (MSWD=1.5) and 36,73±0.50 Ma (MSWD=0.65). The integrated results indicate that the upper part of the Loreto Formation has a minimum Priabonian age, supporting previous reassignations of this part of the formation into the Late Eocene, and differing from the Oligocene age proposed in its original definition. El presente estudio integra nueva evidencia paleoictiológica, paleobotánica y resultados radiométricos que en conjunto permiten proponer una edad eocena tardía para la Formación Loreto, en la península de Brunswick del extremo sur de Chile. La rica diversidad de peces cartilaginosos fósiles (Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii) reconocida en niveles superiores de la mencionada unidad incluye los taxa Carcharias aff. hopei (Agassiz), Odontaspis sp., Carcharoides catticus (Philippi), Striatolamia macrota (Agassiz), Anomotodon sp., Macrorhizoduspraecursor (Leriche), Galeorhinus sp., Abdounia sp., Hexanchus sp., Squatina sp., Hexanchidae indet., Myliobatis sp., Myliobatoidea indet., e Ischyodus dolloi Leriche. Este conjunto muestra claras afinidades ecológicas con ictiofaunas del Eoceno tethyano previamente descritas en el Hemisferio Norte, a la vez que presenta elementos comunes con peces cartilaginosos del Eoceno de Antártica. Adicionalmente, el estudio paleobotánico en esta unidad identificó improntas referidas a Asplenium sp., Pteris sp. Podocarpus sp., y abundantes angiospermas, incluyendo Nothofagus lanceolata Dusén, N. simplicidens Dusén, N. variabilis Dusén, N. cf. alessandri Espinosa, N. subferruginea (Dusén), Hydrangea sp. y Phyllites spp. Además, se identificaron restos de troncos fósiles de Nothofagoxylon scalariforme Gothan y Araucariaceae cf. Araucarioxylon Kraus. Adicionalmente, se reconoció polen de las gimnospermas y angiospermas: Podocarpidites otagoensis Couper, Retitricolpites sp., Tricolpites sp., Liliacidites sp., Polyporina sp., Nothofagidites cincta Cookson y Nothofagidites cranwellae Couper, las que presentan afinidades con floras de edad eocena, siendo consistente con la edad de los peces fósiles. Finalmente, el análisis SHRIMP U-Th-Pb de dos muestras colectadas desde los estratos estudiados, han proporcionado 38 y 60 granos de circón respectivamente, indicando claros peaks principales en 36,48±0,47 Ma (MSWD=1,5) y 36,73±0,50 Ma (MSWD=0,65). Los resultados integrados indican que los estratos superiores de la Formación Loreto pueden ser acotados a una mínima edad priabo-niana, siendo consistente con reasignaciones previas al Eoceno Tardío para esta parte de la formación, y difiriendo de la edad oligocena originalmente propuesta en su definición.

A number of glacial moraines are distributed from the eastern margin of the Torres del Paine drainage basin to near the present margin of the Patagonian Ice Fields, together with a set of regionally continuous lacustrine terraces related to glacial fluctuations. The geomorphology, supported by lake sediment evidence, indicates the existence of a single proglacial paleolake in this area, here referred to as the Great Tehuelche Paleolake. This concept helps to clarify the chronology of glacial events and leads to a better understanding of the evolution of the hydrologic system in the Torres del Paine area. Glacial advances previously referred to as A, B and C occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum and fed the Great Tehuelche Paleolake with meltwater, allowing it to reach its maximum extension. The discovery of thrombolites at Laguna Amarga suggests that the drainage of the paleolake towards the Última Esperanza Fjord took place at 7,113 Cal. yr BP, after the melting of an ice barrier that existed during the earlier glacial advance. This gave rise to the development of a complex fluvio-lacustrine hydrologic system that persists to the present day. Un grupo de morrenas glaciales están distribuidas desde el margen este de la cuenca de drenaje de Torres del Paine hacia el margen actual de los Campos de Hielo Patagónicos. Las morrenas se observan en conjunto con un grupo de terrazas lacustres regionales, las cuales están vinculadas a las fluctuaciones glaciales. La geomorfología y evidencias de sedimentos lacustres indican la existencia de un único lago proglacial, referido en este estudio como Gran Paleolago Tehuelche. Este concepto ayuda a clarificar la cronología de los eventos glaciales y permite una mejor comprensión de la evolución del sistema hidrológico del sector de Torres del Paine. Los eventos glaciales, previamente referidos como Avance A, B y C, ocurrieron durante el Último Máximo Glacial y alimentaron con aguas de fusión al Gran Paleolago Tehuelche, permitiéndole alcanzar su mayor extensión. El descubrimiento de trombolitos en Laguna Amarga sugiere que el desagüe del paleolago ocurrió hace 7.113 Cal. años AP por el Seno de Última Esperanza, producto de la fusión de una barrera glaciar existente durante los avances glaciales anteriores. Luego del drenaje se desarrolló en un complejo sistema hidrológico que persiste hasta el presente.

Very little work has been done on the stratigraphy and sedimentology of the upper Oligocene-Lower Miocene Río Baguales Formation in the Magallanes Province of southern Chile since its original definition in 1957. A detailed stratigraphic section of the upper part of the formation exposed west of the Baguales River is presented, with an interpretation of depositional environments. This indicates a prograding shoreline in which estuary mouth, middle estuary (lagoon) and bay head delta facies are represented. Large-scale delta slope foresets indicate progradation towards the north and northwest, whereas southeast-directed cross-beds on the delta front probably suggest wave action. The general sequence reflects a gradual sea-level fall largely counteracted by tectonic subsidence, which provided the ne-cessary accommodation space for thick tidal flat and subtidal deposits to accumulate. A longer period of transgression towards the top of the succession may be related to a rise in sea-level or accelerated tectonic subsidence, whereas a major regression commencing at around 23.3 Ma probably coincides with the opening of the Drake Passage and the growth of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. Hay muy pocos trabajos sobre la estratigrafía y sedimentología de la Formación Río Baguales del Oligoceno superior-Mioceno inferior en la Provincia de Magallanes del sur de Chile, luego de su primera definición en 1957. Se presenta un perfil estratigráfico detallado de la parte superior de la formación al oeste del río Baguales, con una interpretación de los ambientes de depositación. Se identificó una costa progradante con facies de boca de estuario, medio de estuario (laguna) y delta de cabecera. Las grandes capas frontales del talud deltaico indican progradación hacia el norte y noroeste, mientras que la presencia de laminación cruzada inclinada hacia el sureste sugiere la acción de oleaje. La sucesión en general refleja una caída gradual del nivel del mar, acompañada por subsidencia tectónica con la creación del espacio de acomodación necesario para la acumulación de potentes facies mareales y submareales. Un período de transgresión hacia la parte superior de la sucesión indica una subida del nivel del mar o una aceleración en la tasa de subsidencia tectónica, seguida por una regresión mayor que comenzó alrededor de 23,3 Ma, probablemente coincidente con la apertura del Pasaje de Drake y el crecimiento de la calota de hielo de la Antártica del este.

New remains of plesiosaurs (Diapsida; Sauropterygia) found in a transported block correlated with upper levels of the Dorotea Formation, Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) are describedherein. They were collected on the southern slopes of Sierra Dorotea located northeast of Puerto Natales (51 °41 '20,4"S, 72°26'07,4"W), Magallanes Región, Chile. This is the first disco very of the family Elasmosauridae in high latitudes of South America, complementing the previously known paleodistribution of this group in the eastern Pacific Ocean and the Antarctic during the latest Cretaceous. Se describen nuevos restos de plesiosaurios (Diapsida; Sauropterygia) incluidos en un bloque rodado correlacionado con estratos superiores de la Formación Dorotea (Cretácico Tardío, Maastrichtiano), recolectados en la parte sur de la sierra homómma, ubicada al noreste de Puerto Natales (51°41'20,4"S, 72°26'07,4"W), Región de Magallanes, Chile. Se reconoce por primera vez la presencia de la familia Elasmosauridae en altas latitudes de Sudamérica, complementando así la paleodistribution previamente conocida de este grupo en el margen oriental del Océano Pacífico y de la Antartica durante la última parte del Cretácico Tardío.

La costa del Desierto de Atacama se caracteriza por la ocurrencia de vientos fuertes del sur y suroeste. El clima árido, la geomorfología plana y las características granulométricas de los depósitos superficiales de la Pampa Mejillones, ubicada en la costa del norte de Chile (23°S), favorecen el estudio de los procesos de erosión y transporte eólico de partículas en este desierto costero. Mediciones in situ del flujo horizontal de partículas (G) y de vientos, junto con análisis sedimentológicos de la capa superficial de esta pampa, permitieron determinar los parámetros relevantes en el proceso de erosión y transporte eólico de partículas, así como estimar su estacionalidad. Se determinó un coeficiente de rugosidad superficial (z0) promedio del orden de 10-3 m, típico de planicies desérticas. Estacionalmente se observaron valores de G de hasta 2.100 g cm-1 mes-1 asociados a velocidades de fricción (u*) entre 0,4 y 0,5 m s-1 durante la primavera del año 2000. Resultados similares se obtuvieron para los años 1999 y 2001. La sedimentología (granulometría y textura superficial) y mineralogía de las partículas del suelo y del material capturado en las trampas de polvo, permitieron determinar que la fracción transportada está caracterizada principalmente por cuarzo y feldespatos, y modas granulométricas entre 75 y 1.000 um, similares a las observadas en los sedimentos cercanos y al sur (viento arriba) del área de captura. Los resultados obtenidos y la correlación preliminar entre los vientos medidos en distintas estaciones meteorológicas en la península de Mejillones, permiten establecer una relación directa entre el flujo horizontal de partículas hacia la bahía homónima y los vientos regionales del sur-suroeste, especialmente durante los meses de primavera y verano, en concomitancia con la intensificación de los vientos favorables a la surgencia costera en el área oceánica adyacente. The coast of the Atacama Desert is characterized by the occurrence of strong south- and southwesterly winds. The arid climate, fíat geomorphology and the characteristics of the superficial sediments on Pampa Mejillones, located in northern Chile (ca. 23°S), favor the study of eolian erosion and transport processes in this coastal desert. In situ measurements of the horizontal particle flux (G) and winds in the área, together with sedimentological analyses of the uppermost part of the pampa sediments, allowed determination of the significant parameters in the eolian erosión and particle transport process and its seasonality. A local surface roughness parameter (z0) of about 10-3 m was calculated, which is a typical value of desert plains. Seasonally, values of G up to 2,100 g cm-1 month-1 were observed, associated with friction velocities (u*) between 0,4 and 0,5 m s-1 during the spring of 2000. Similar results were obtained for the years 1999 and 2001. The sedimentology (granulometry and surface texture) and mineralogy of the surface and captured material in the dust traps show that the transported fraction is characterized mainly by quartz and feldspars, with grain-size modes between 75 and 1,000 um, similar to those observed in nearby soils and south (upwind) of the capture area. The results obtained and preliminary correlation of measured winds at the different meteorological stations on the Mejillones Península, indicate a direct relationship between the horizontal particle flux towards Mejillones Bay and the regional south-southwest winds, especially during spring and summer, simultaneous with the intensification of winds favoring coastal upwelling in the area.

Stelloglyphus llicoensis isp. nov. is a large radial, discoidal to ellipsoidal trace fossil with a central shaft and single to bifurcating branches radiating from different levels. A 30 m thick measured section of the Ranquil Formation at Punta Litre contains an associated trace fossil assemblage including Zoophycos, Chondrites, Phycosiphon, Nereites missouriensis, Lockeia siliquaria, Psammichnites(?), Parataenidium,Ophiomorpha,and Rhizocorallium,some of which reworked the Stelloglyphus traces. The sedimentology, together with micro- and macrofossils and the associated trace fossil assemblage, suggest that the succession was deposited in an outer continental shelf to slope environment in subtropical to tropical waters. Stelloglyphus llicoensis isp. nov. es una traza fósil grande, radial, y discoidal a elipsoidal con una asta central y ramas sencillas a bifurcadas que radian desde diferentes niveles. Un perfil estratigráfico de 30 m medido en la Formación Ranquil en Punta Litre contiene una asociación de trazas fósiles asociadas que incluye Zoophycos, Chondrites, Phycosiphon, Nereites missouriensis, Lockeia siliquaria, Psammichnites(7), Parataenidium, Ophiomorpha, y Rhizocorallium, algunas de las cuales retrabajaron las trazas de Stelloglyphus. La sedi-mentología, junto con los micro- y macro fósiles y la asociación de trazas fósiles, indican que la sucesión fue depositada en la parte exterior de la plataforma continental hasta el talud continental en aguas subtropicales a tropicales.

Varios autores han propuesto diferentes esquemas estratigráficos para los depósitos sedimentarios neógenos marinos que afloran en la zona costera de Chile central entre Valparaíso (~33°00'S) y Punta Topocalma (~34°30'S), sin que exista un consenso al respecto. Tampoco existe acuerdo respecto a las correlaciones entre los depósitos que afloran en la parte norte de dicha zona, entre Valparaíso y San Antonio (~33°30'S) con aquellos que aparecen en la parte sur, entre San Antonio y Punta Topocalma. Sobre la base de nuevos estudios estratigráficos, sedimentológicos y paleontológicos se propone, de manera formal, un nuevo esquema estratigráfico para estos depósitos. De acuerdo con este nuevo esquema se definen la Formación Navidad (Mioceno Superior-Plioceno Inferior) y las formaciones Licancheu, Rapel y La Cueva (Plioceno). Se propone la elevación de las tres primeras unidades (Navidad, Licancheu y Rapel), generalmente consideradas como miembros en clasificaciones anteriores, al rango de formaciones debido a que se encuentran separadas por discontinuidades (paraconformidades) de escala regional. En el presente trabajo se definen estas unidades, se revisan los esquemas anteriores y se justifica la proposición de este nuevo esquema Different stratigraphic schemes have been proposed by various authors for the Neogene marine sedimentary deposits cropping out along the central Chilean coast between Valparaíso (~33°00'S) and Punta Topocalma (~34°30'S), without any consensus having been reached. Neither does any agreement exist with respect to the correlation between the deposits cropping out in the northern part of this area, between San Antonio (~33°30'S) and Valparaíso, and those of the southern part, between San Antonio and Punta Topocalma. Based on new stratigraphic, sedimentologic and paleontologic studies we propose a formal, new stratigraphic classification for this area. According to this scheme we define the Navidad Formation (Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene) and the Licancheu, Rapel and La Cueva formations (Pliocene). We propose that the rank of the three first cited units (Navidad, Licancheu and Rapel), generally considered to be members in previous classifications, be elevated to formations, because they are separated by regional unconformities (paraconformities). In this paper we define these units, revise the previous classifications, and explain the basis for the new classification
