Understanding the role that settlement can have on the base resistance of piles is a crucial matter in the design and safety control of deep foundations under various buildings and infrastructure, especially for long to super-long piles (60–90 m length) in soft soil. This paper presents a novel assessment of this issue by applying explainable machine learning (ML) techniques to a robust database (1131 datapoints) of fully instrumented pile tests across 37 real-life projects in the Mekong Delta. The analysis of data based on conventional methods shows distinct responses of long piles to rising settlement, as compared to short piles. The base resistance can rapidly develop at a small settlement threshold (0.015–0.03% of pile's length) and contribute up to 50–55% of the total bearing capacity in short piles, but it slowly rises over a wide range of settlement to only 20–25% in long piles due to considerable loss of settlement impact over the depth. Furthermore, by leveraging the advantages of ML methods, the results significantly enhance our understanding of the settlement–base resistance relationship through explainable computations. The ML-based prediction method is compared with popular practice codes for pile foundations, further attesting to the high accuracy and reliability of the newly established model. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the causative agent of shrimp diseases, the most serious of which is acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND). Bacteriophage is a virus of bacteria that can parasitize and destroy bacteria, so it is considered a potential alternative to antibiotics. The study was carried out to evaluate the treatment ability of bacteriophages on Litopenaeus vannamei after being infected by V. parahaemolyticus B4XOT2.2 isolated from the bottom mud of shrimp ponds infected with AHPND. The study used the histopathological survey method on shrimp at all three ages: postlarvae, adult shrimp at the ages of 30–45 days, and 55–60 days old, which were arranged into three treatments: healthy shrimp, diseased shrimp, and bacteriophage-treated shrimp. The results showed that: the concentration of Vibrio spp. in bacteriophage-treated treatment was decreased in all three groups (postlarvae, shrimp at the ages of 30–45 days, and 55–60 days old) from 3,7x103 CFU/mL to 2,2x102 CFU/mL after two days, from 4,6x104 CFU/mL to 3,3x102 CFU/mL after two days and from 4,6x104 CFU/mL to 5,6x103 CFU/mL after three days, respectively. The pathological signs and histological features of the infected shrimp samples were similar to those typical of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease and recovered in shrimp tissue after being treated with bacteriophages such as the hepatopancreas was also darker, the intestines gradually filled, no hematoma around the tubules were found, in the lumen of the tube reduced sloughing cells and blood cells, no melanization was observed.

Marine diatoms play a very crucial role in carbon export, and current food-web and become an important factor in global silica cycle. This then has made the mechanism of their biosilicification interesting to be a research subject. The classical theory states that the silica metabolism has been originated from the absorption of silicate ions, which might not give a suitable explanation for the solid silica silicification. In this study, mono-disperse Si/SiO2 fluorescent submicron-spheres were synthesized in aqueous solution, and applied in monitoring the extracellular solid silica accumulation of Chaetoceros sp. diatom. The Si/SiO2 submicron particles emitted light-blue color with the spectrum centered at 440 nm under the excitation of 365 nm UV light, similar to the typical excitation/emission pair of the DAPI fluorophore (excitation/emission: 358 nm/461 nm). The fluorescence-microscopic investigation showed that the Si/SiO2 particles delocalized on the diatoms’ surface and increased a silicic-acid-level surrounding the microalgae. As a consequence, the growth rate of the diatoms increased as the concentration of the SiO2 particles was at 120 mg/L, and reached 1.5 times higher than the growth rate calculated from the F2 media. The study not only introduces a new aspect to the extracellular metabolism of microalgae biosilicification corresponding to the global silica cycle, but also presents a new-type of culturing media using SiO2 nanoparticles for diatom cultivation, which increases the growth rate of artificial diatom-culturing for further applications.

Abdominal effusion due to hepatic lymphorrhea post-hepatectomy is an extremely rare and complex complication in clinical practice. No standard treatment method has been established for this condition to date. We report a case of complicated intra-abdominal lymphatic leakage in a patient following hepatectomy to treat hepatocellular carcinoma. The patient underwent percutaneous embolization of the hilar hepatic lymphatic system, combined with intensive medical treatment. Percutaneous embolization represents a safe and effective method that should be considered as a first-line treatment for this complication.

Determining the cause of gastrointestinal bleeding is critical to determining appropriate treatment. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding from the pancreas, referred to hemosuccus pancreaticus, is a rare entity that can cause massive and life-threatening bleeding. Diagnosis remains challenging, and the mortality rate of hemosuccus pancreaticus remains high, ranging from 9.6%–90%. In this article, we present a case that was successfully diagnosed and treated at the Department of General Surgery, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, and a review of the available literature regarding this rare disease.

Pericallosal artery aneurysm (PAA) is a relatively uncommon type of intracranial aneurysm that tends to rupture more frequently and cause higher mortality rates than other types of cerebral aneurysms. Surgery to address PAA is difficult due to its deep-seated location, the size of the aneurysmal sac, and the limited surgical field. In recent years, with the development of percutaneous interventions, endovascular treatment has become the preferred, minimally invasive intervention method for the treatment of pericallosal aneurysms. In this article, we present a case of PAA that was successfully treated with flow diversion therapy in a 51-year-old male.

Although mycotic (infected) aneurysms are uncommon, they can affect any artery. The most frequently involved vessel is the aorta as well as femoral and cerebral arteries. A vascular-colonic fistula from infected aneurysms is even rarer, which remains a challenge for diagnosis and treatment. In this case report, we aimed to illustrate an 89-year-old man presenting initially with an aneurysm of the right common iliac artery. Forty days later, this lesion was infected and produced fresh blood in the rectum and sigmoid colon observed by colonoscopy. The final diagnosis of this case was a right common iliac artery aneurysm-colonic fistula due to infection. The patient was successfully diagnosed and treated with surgery at our hospital.
