ANDREW FENTON COOPER, RICHARD A. HIGGOTT, and KIM RICHARD NOSSAL take issue with the common view that the Gulf conflict provides an example of successful American leadership in international politics. They argue that if leadership is examined from the perspective of the follower instead of the leader, the American role in the Gulf war emerges in a different light.

The challenges of the 21st century global economy have made leadership a difficult management task. Among other traits, innovation, people-orientation, long-term perspectives, integrity and individuality distinguish a leader from a mere manager. Leaders are called upon to manage the dream, a vision towards which whole organizations strive. SAS CEO Jan Carlzon symbolizes the kind of leadership necessary in the future world economy. This involves vision communication, choice recruitment, effective and fair compensation, employee re-education and reorganization policies that meet the exigencies of transnational and technology-driven business. Other global forces that executive leadership must cope with are deregulation, values and demographics, environmental concerns and mergers and acquisitions. The prevalence of joint ventures will necessitate leadership's fostering of a shared vision between firms.

The article emphasizes the importance of effective management and leadership in securing corporate growth.

ABSTRACT: The current decline of superpower hegemony, which is seen as a crucial component in the so-called global crisis, makes it pertinent again to raise the issue of regionalization as a possible path towards a more stable world order. This process contains two dimensions: hegemonic decline creating a room-for-maneuver for various world regions, and the growth of a regional identity, a new form of collective consciousness making regions political subjects rather than objects. The paper discusses the future role of Europe from that perspective. The first part discusses the global crisis and the way Europe-East and West-is affected by it. Among various theories of crisis, emphasis is put on hegemonic decline. The second part analyzes development options in Western Europe in terms of 'social projects', in particular focusing on the role of Europe as an autonomous global actor. The third part looks at reform politics in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe from a similar perspective. Finally a regionalization scenario with Europe as the main actor is outlined.
