This study assessed the nitrogen nutrition index, morphogenic characteristics and tiller structure of Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (LINK) Hitch) pasture submitted to different nitrogen (N) levels (zero, 150 or 300 kg ha-1 of N). The experimental design was entirely randomized with repeated measures arrangement. The experimental animals were Angus heifers under rotational stocking grazing method. The number of animals was variable to keep 30±5 cm post-grazing sward height. Nitrogen nutrition index increased linearly according N levels (Ŷ = 59.8 + 0.1216N; P < 0.0001; r²=0.53). The leaf appearance rate adjusted to a positive linear regression model according the thermal sum (TS) with zero of N (Ŷ0N = 0.0077 + 0.0000087TS; P = 0.0308; r² = 0.72) and 150 kg ha-1 of N (Ŷ150N = 0.0020 + 0.000021 TS; P = 0.0022; r² = 0.92). The use of 300 kg ha-1 of N did not alter the leaf appearance rate (0.0124 leaf degree-days-1). The use of up to 300 kg ha-1 of N increases the Alexandergrass nitrogen content. The leaf appearance rate in Alexandergrass is modified using N while the morphogenic characteristics leaf expansion, stem expansion, phyllochron, leaf lifespan, leaf elongation duration and tiller structure are not altered by N utilization. Dahlia is an important ornamental crop and widely used as a garden plant in beds and mixed borders as well as a cut flower in bouquets and flower arrangements. Understanding the factors that support sustainable flower production is essential for dahlia growers to increase their profits. Two key variables that define leaf development during the vegetative phase of a crop are the rate of appearance of leaves on the main stem and the final number of leaves. The objective in this study was to determine the phyllochron and the final leaf pair number (FLPN) in cut dahlias cultivars grown in different locations. Three on farm experiments varying from two to eight cut dahlia cultivars were conducted during two years (2021/2022) in six locations in Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil. The number of unfolded leaf pairs (NLP - an unfolded leaf was assumed when the foliolates edges were not touching anymore) on each plant was counted once or twice a week, depending on the farm, until the last leaf pair was unfolded. The NLP was linearly regressed against TT (thermal time °C day-1) and the phyllochron (oC day leaf pair-1) was calculated as the slope of the linear regression. The results indicated that the phyllochron of dahlia cultivars varied between 45.7 to 95.6 °C pair of leaves-1 and 8 to 14 of final number of pair of leaves in the first experiment, 27.2 to 97.4 °C pair of leaves-1 and 6 to 15 of final leaf pair number in the second experiment and 46.8 at 106.4 °C leaf pair-1 and 6 to 13 the final leaf pair number in the third. Thus, there was no significant difference between the sites in the phyllochron and NFP variables.

To examine the interactive effect of temperature and photon flux density (PFD) on growth dynamics and gas exchange of young Vitis vinifera L. cv. Shiraz vines, a controlled environment study was conducted by exposing vines to two different temperatures combined with either high or low PFD. Shoot growth was accelerated and the phyllochron of Shiraz leaves was hastened in the low temperature (25/12°C) × low PFD condition (350 μmol m−2 s−1). In early emerging leaves, leaf area was responsive to temperature whereas in later emerging leaves it was dependent on light intensity. The high temperature (32/20°C) × high PFD (700 μmol m−2 s−1) treatment delayed internode extension of early emerging internodes. However, low temperature × high PFD increased leaf gas exchange across the different growth stages. The net shoot carbon balance was greater for the low temperature × high PFD treatment. Dry matter accumulation was also greater in early emerging internodes irrespective of treatment. These results on young Shiraz vines indicate that 25°C is favourable to 32°C, and some growth characteristics are accelerated at low PFD while others favour higher PFD. This study describes the effects of temperature and light combination on young Vitis vinifera L. cv. Shiraz vines. The low temperature and low or high light conditions are favourable for growth characters of young vegetative Shiraz vines. However, high temperature and high light conditions are detrimental. ABSTRACT Models of development are tools that connect the effects of development on the environment, allowing their applications in several studies. Nevertheless, studies are scarce on models of development for native forest species in Brazil. This study aimed to predict the development of two native forest species - Citharexylum myrianthum Cham. and Bixa orellana L. - with two agrometeorological models, being one linear (Phyllochron) and another nonlinear (Wang and Engel, 1998). Both models predict the cumulative leaf number (CLN) on a daily basis, which generates the seedling phase duration (SPD) when integrated to time. Data were used from two years of experiments conducted during 2015 and 2016 growing seasons and 12 sowing dates in Itajubá, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. These species × sowing dates × years experiments provided a rich dataset for calibrating and evaluating both models. Although both models used in the study allowed predicting the dynamics of leaf development, CLN, and SPD in two native forest species, the Wang and Engel model provided a more accurate prediction of CLN and SPD for C. myrianthum species, with an overall root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.82 leaves (CLN) and 5.9 days (SPD). For B. orellana, the Phyllochron model was slightly better, with an overall RMSE of 1.48 leaves (CLN) and seven days (SDP).

Accurate data on development responses to air temperature are essential to feed development and productivity models through which it is possible to analyze the global warming impacts. The cardinal temperatures – base (Tb), optimum (Topt), and maximum (TB) - delimit the temperature range in which development occurs, while the phyllochron (ºC day per leaf) defines the thermal requirements necessary for leaf appearance and development rate of tree species. Field experiments employing multiple sowing dates provide a wide range of temperature regimes closer to natural field conditions and, at the same time, allow obtaining accurate and reliable estimates of cardinal temperatures and phyllochron values. This study estimated the cardinal temperatures – Tb, Topt, and TB – and the phyllochron of tree species Cybistax antisyphilitica (Mart.) Mart. and Platycyamus regnellii Benth., both native to Brazil, using multiple sowing dates. For this, leaf appearance data from field experiments conducted outdoors during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons with twelve sowing dates were used. C. antisyphilitica develops properly among 13 °C (Tb), 20 °C (Topt), and 48.4 °C (TB) temperature ranges, and P. regnellii among 13.7 °C (Tb), 21.5 °C (Topt) and 43.4 °C (TB). The phyllochron for leaf appearance was different between the two species. On average, C. antisyphilitica needs to accumulate 88.2 °C day to emit a leaf on the main stem, while P. regnellii needs to accumulate 109.7 °C day per leaf, and both values correspond to a development rate of 0.0134 and 0.0091 leaf per ºC day, respectively. Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the cardinal temperatures and to quantify the thermal requirements for the initial development of seedlings of the native tree species Citharexylum myrianthum and Bixa orellana. A field experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 2?12 factorial arrangement (2 tree species and 12 sowing dates), with five replicates. The base, optimum, and maximum temperatures for the development of C. myrianthum were 11.4, 18.1, and 36.6°C, and, for B. orellana, 12.0, 18.4, and 46.4°C. The thermal requirements for the development of C. myrianthum was 66.7°C day per leaf, and, for B. orellana, 82.5°C day per leaf. In the initial development, B. orellana shows a large thermal amplitude and is tolerant to extreme temperatures, while C. myrianthum shows a large thermal amplitude, but a lower thermal requirement and a more rapid development than B. orellana.

Earliness per se (Eps) genes may play a critical role in further improving wheat adaptation and fine-tuning wheat development to cope with climate change. There are only few studies on the detailed effect of Eps on wheat development and fewer on the interaction of Eps with the environment and other genes determining time to anthesis. Furthermore, it seems relevant to study every newly discovered Eps gene and its probable interactions as the mechanisms and detailed effects of each Eps may be quite different. In the present study, we evaluated NILs differing in the recently identified Eps-7D as well as in Ppd-D1 at three temperature regimes (9, 15 and 18 °C) under short day. The effect of Eps-7D on time to anthesis as well as on its component phases varied both qualitatively and quantitatively depending on the allelic status of Ppd-D1 and temperature, being larger in a photoperiod-sensitive background. A more noticeable effect of Eps-7D (when combined with Ppd-D1b) was realised during the late reproductive phase. Consequently, the final leaf number was not clearly altered by Eps-7D, while floret development of the labile florets (florets 2 and 3 in this case, depending on the particular spikelet) was favoured by the action of the Eps-7D-late allele, increasing the likelihood of particular florets to become fertile, and consequently, improving spike fertility when combined with Ppd-D1b.

Earliness per se (Eps) genes are important to fine tune adaptation, and studying their probable pleiotropic effect on wheat yield traits is worthwhile. In addition, it has been shown that some Eps genes interact with temperature and therefore determining the likely Eps × temperature interaction is needed for each newly identified Eps gene. We studied two NILs differing in the newly identified Eps-7D (carrying insensitive Ppd-D1 in the background) under three temperature regimes (9, 15 and 18 °C) and two photoperiods (12 and 24 h). Eps-7D affected time to anthesis as expected and the Eps-7D-late allele extended both the period before and after terminal spikelet. The interaction effect of Eps-7D × temperature was significant but not cross-over: the magnitude and level of significance of the difference between NILs with the late or early allele was affected by the growing temperature (i.e., difference was least at 18 °C and largest at 9 °C), and the differences caused due to temperature sensitivity were influenced by photoperiod. The rate of leaf initiation was faster in NIL with Eps-7D-early than with the late allele which compensated for the shorter duration of leaf initiation resulting in similar final leaf number between two NILs. Eps-7D-late consistently increased spike fertility through improving floret primordia survival as a consequence of extending the late reproductive phase.

To discuss the diversity of morphological traits and life strategies of trees, the functional relationship between leaf expansion and vessel formation must be clarified. We compared the temporal relationship among tree species with different leaf habits and vessel arrangements. Twigs, leaves, and trunk core samples were periodically acquired from 35 sample trees of nine species in a temperate forest in Japan. We quantitatively estimated leaf expansion using a nonlinear regression model and observed thin sections of twigs and trunks with a light microscope. Almost all of the first-formed vessels in twigs, which formed adjacent to the annual ring border, were lignified with a leaf area between 0% and 70% of the maximum in all species. The first-formed vessels in trunks lignified between 0% and 95% of the maximum leaf area in ring-porous deciduous Quercus serrata and ring-(radial-)porous evergreen Castanopsis cuspidate. Their lignification occurred earlier than in diffuse-porous deciduous Liquidambar styraciflua, diffuse-porous evergreen Cinnamomum camphora and Symplocos prunifolia, and radial-porous evergreen Quercus glauca and Quercus myrsinifolia. The timing varied in semi-ring-porous deciduous Acanthopanax sciadophylloides and diffuse-porous evergreen Ilex pedunculosa. The observed differences in the timing of vessel formation after leaf appearance were reflected in their differing vessel porosities and were connected to the different life strategies among tree species.

Understanding the mechanisms by which some C4 grasses grow more than others at moderately low temperatures (~12-20ºC) is valuable to select materials to lengthen the growing season. In turn, the determination of leaf lifespan for each material to be used is relevant to optimize the balance between herbage production and herbage utilization. The objectives of this study were to analyze the growth capacity and the leaf lifespan in two native materials (Pappophorum caespitosum and Trichloris crinita) and in four materials introduced (Cenchrus ciliaris cv. 'Texas-4464', Cenchrus ciliaris cv. 'Bella', Panicum coloratum cv. 'Klein' and Panicum maximum cv. 'Gatton Panic') commonly used in Argentina. Under non-limiting growth conditions, the rate of leaf appearance and leaf elongation, the number of growing leaves and the leaf lifespan, were measured. The materials showed similar leaf growth capacity through contrasting mechanisms: while three of them (P. coloratum, P. maximum and P. caespitosum) showed higher growth of individual leaves, the rest (C. ciliaris cv. 'Texas-4464', C. ciliaris cv. 'Bella' and T. crinita) showed higher number of growing leaves. The leaf lifespan was not significantly different between materials evaluated. Interestingly, in agreement with previous results obtained in a comparison of C3 grasses, it was observed that materials possessing a greater number of growing leaves had lower values of leaf lifespan.

Objective of this work by evaluating the effect of nitrogen on forage yield and morphogenesis of elephant grass cv. Pioneer. In this paper, we presents a method for modeling and visualization of crop leaves based on agronomic parameters in order to improve the production efficiency of three dimensional digital media for agricultural subjects. The field experiments were conducted in the experiment farm of Beijing Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Beijing City. During maize growth periods of jointing stage, horn mouth stage, florescence stage, grouting stage, maturation period and senility period, SPAD values of maize leaves were obtained by using SPAD-502 and four appearance parameters were collected by an apparent image acquisition system using linear light source. The four appearance parameters were diffuse reflectance, transparency, specular reflectance and roughness. In order to finely model the maize leaf appearance, leaf surface was divided into three structures including mesophyll, main vein and secondary vein. With the data, we analyzed the relationship between SPAD, growth period parameters and various kinds of appearance parameters of the three structures, respectively. We applied a variety of mathematical models to fit the data to describe the potential relationship between SPAD, growth period and diffuse, transparency appearance of mesophyll. Based on R2 and RMSE, we selected quadratic function for diffuse reflectance and negative exponential function for transparency. The coefficients of determination for the RGB channels of final diffuse model of mesophyll were 0.9137, 0.8511, and 0.6146, respectively, and their corresponding values of RMSE were 0.01549, 0.0128, and 0.01533. The coefficients of determination for the transparency model were 0.9975, 0.9913, and 0.9907, respectively, and their corresponding values of RMSE were 0.0064, 0.0096, and 0.0207. Data showed diffuse reflection and transparency of secondary vein could be classified into four sections by SPAD values and there was little difference between each class of appearance values. We used mean values of each section as diffuse and transparency parameters. The diffuse reflection and transparency of main vein has little change in whole growth periods. As such, we used mean values as unique and invariant apparent feature in diffuse and transmission reflection. We found that specular reflectance and roughness parameters of the three structures were not related to SPAD and growth period, therefore, mean values of these two appearance parameters obtained from all samples were used as a glossy appearance. Based on the above analysis, a series of quantitative appearance models for three structures were established respectively with SPAD and growth period as input parameters, and appearance material parameters as output. The spatial-varying appearance of leaf surface formed specific texture patterns. We abstracted the texture pattern and constructed a parameterized structure method to generate a structure texture image for synthesis of the geometric features of mesophyll, main vein and secondary vein structures. Each pixel of structure texture image represented a structure category of the point at this position, and we used the appearance models of each structure to assign appearance parameters for each pixel. Finally, four appearance textures were generated for simulating the appearance patterns of the leaf surface including diffuse texture, transparency texture, specular texture and roughness texture. A real-time rendering framework was developed to simulate the subtle interaction between plant leaves and light. In order to achieve a WYSIWYG display result, we simplified the light computing by decomposing light environment into a directional light source (sun) and some environment light sources (sky). A complete realistic effect was finally developed by combing the appearance model and illumination computation using a deferred lighting rendering framework which can simulate real-time shadows, ambient occlusion, and dynamic radiance from sun and sky. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach was capable of generating different appearance of crop leaves by controlling the agronomic parameters and achieving a visually satisfactory display result. Our method showed diffuse reflectance and transmittance were the most affected by the parameters of SPAD and growth stage, while the specular reflection and roughness parameters were always stable. There were differences in the fitting results of diffuse and transparency model of mesophyll in RGB channels, while simulation result indicated there was little impact on the final visualization effect. Our method has a great potential to become an effective visualization tool for agricultural application, such as crop model, agricultural education system, and digital media for agricultural subjects. The objective of this study was to simulate the impact of elevated temperature scenarios on leaf development of potato in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Leaf appearance was estimated using a multiplicative model that has a non-linear temperature response function which calculates the daily leaf appearance rate (LAR, leaves day-1) and the accumulated number of leaves (LN) from crop emergence to the appearance of the upper last leaf. Leaf appearance was estimated during 100 years in the following scenarios: current climate, +1 °C, +2 °C, +3 °C, +4 °C e +5 °C. The LAR model was estimated with coefficients of the Asterix cultivar in five emergence dates and in two growing seasons (Fall and Spring). Variable of interest was the duration (days) of the crop emergence to the appearance of the final leaf number (EM-FLN) phase. Statistical analysis was performed assuming a three-factorial experiment, with main effects being climate scenarios, growing seasons, and emergence dates in a completely randomized design using years (one hundred) as replications. The results showed that warmer scenarios lead to an increase, in the fall, and a decrease, in the spring growing season, in the duration of the leaf appearance phase, indicating high vulnerability and complexity of the response of potato crop grown in a Subtropical environment to climate change.O objetivo, neste trabalho, foi estimar o impacto de cenários de temperaturas elevadas no desenvolvimento foliar da cultura da batata, em Santa Maria-RS, Brasil. A emissão de folhas da cultura da batata foi estimada por um modelo multiplicativo com função de reposta não linear à temperatura que calcula a taxa diária de aparecimento de folhas (TAF, folhas dia-1) e o número acumulado de folhas (NF) a partir da data de emergência da cultura até o surgimento da última folha. A emissão de folhas foi estimada em 100 anos de cada um dos cenários climáticos: clima atual, +1 °C, +2 °C, +3 °C, +4 °C e +5 °C. O modelo da TAF foi estimado com coeficientes da cultivar Asterix, em cinco datas de emergência e em duas estações de cultivo (Outono e Primavera). A variável de interesse foi duração (em dias) da fase de emergência das plântulas até o aparecimento da folha final (EM-FF). A análise estatística constou de um experimento trifatorial, com os fatores principais sendo cenários climáticos, estações de cultivo e datas de emergência no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com anos (cem anos) como repetições. Observou-se que cenários mais quentes levam a um aumento, no cultivo de outono, e a uma diminuição, no cultivo de primavera, da duração da fase de emissão de folhas, indicando grande vulnerabilidade e complexidade da resposta da batata cultivada em ambiente Subtropical à mudança climática.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the morphogenetic traits and biomass accumulation of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés subjected to doses of N (0, 125, 250, 375 and 500 kg.ha-1 N). The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. Morphogenetic traits and biomass accumulation of dry matter (DM).ha-1 were evaluated. The results were subjected to statistical analysis by grouping the data in two periods, rainy season and throughout the year. Nitrogen doses influenced leaf appearance in the rainy season and throughout the year, with significant increase in leaf elongation during the rainy season, an increase of 56% compared with control. During this period, maximum dose of N (248.1 kg.ha-1) produced 214.49 kg.ha-1.day-1 DM of leaf blade, which was 133% higher than the control. However, the higher N dose in the rainy season resulted in an increase of 137% in the stalk accumulation compared with non-fertilized grass; estimating maximum accumulation of salk of 84.97 kg.ha-1.day-1 of DM for the application of 326.2 kg.ha-1 N. Doses of N also intensified leaf senescence during the rainy season and throughout the year. The control treatment presented 32% less senescence compared with maximum N dose (270.1 kg.ha-1 N) in the rainy season. Forage loss was estimated at 26.08 kg ha-1.day-1 DM at the maximum dose of 295.0 kg.ha-1 N for this period. All variables studied responded positively to N supply in the rainy season. The accumulation of biomass of the plant reached the maximum point with fertilization close to 250 kg.ha-1 N in the rainy season and 375 kg.ha-1 N throughout the year.

Desenvolveu-se este estudo com o objetivo de avaliar o acúmulo de forragem e as características morfogênicas e estruturais do capim-marandu submetido a combinações de alturas e intervalos de corte. O experimento foi realizado no período de agosto de 2003 a abril de 2004. Os tratamentos corresponderam a combinações entre duas alturas (15 e 30 cm) e três intervalos de corte (tempo correspondente para o aparecimento de três, quatro e cinco folhas por perfilho) e foram alocados às unidades experimentais em arranjo fatorial 2 × 3 e delineamento de blocos completos casualizados com três repetições. Foram avaliados o acúmulo total de forragem, o acúmulo de lâminas foliares, colmos e material morto, as variáveis morfogênicas e as estruturais, assim como a altura do dossel no pré-corte e a duração do período de rebrotação. O corte a 15 cm resultou em menor período de rebrotação, altura pré-corte, alongamento de colmo e tamanho final da folha e maior densidade populacional de perfilhos em comparação ao corte a 30 cm. O intervalo de corte correspondente ao aparecimento de cinco folhas por perfilho resultou em maiores alturas pré-corte, taxas de alongamento de folhas, tamanho final das folhas e acúmulo de colmos e em menor densidade populacional de perfilhos em comparação aos intervalos correspondentes a três e quatro folhas surgidas por perfilho. A maior eficiência de utilização dos pastos de capim-marandu foi alcançada com cortes a 15 cm. Pastos manejados com intervalo de corte correspondente a três folhas surgidas por perfilho, independentemente da altura de corte avaliada, acumulam elevada quantidade de folhas, componente altamente desejável para alimentação animal.The objective of this study was to evaluate forage accumulation and morphogenetic and structural characteristics of marandu palisadegrass subjected to combinations of cutting heights and cutting intervals. The experiment was carried out from August 2003 to April 2004. Treatments corresponded to combinations between two cutting heights (15 and 30 cm) and three cutting intervals (time corresponding to the appearance of three, four and five new leaves per tiller), and they were allocated to experimental units according to a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement and a complete randomised block design, with three replications. It was evaluated accumulation of total forage, leaf blade, stem and dead material, morphogenetic and structural variables, as well as, pre-cut sward height and regrowth duration. Swards cut at 15 cm had shorter regrowth periods, pre-cut sward height, stem elongation rate and final leaf size, and larger tiller population density than swards cut at 30 cm. The cutting interval corresponding to the appearance of five leaves per tiller resulted in higher pre-cut sward height, leaf elongation rate, final leaf size, stem accumulation and smaller tiller population density than those intervals corresponding to three and four leaves per tiller. The greatest utilization efficiency of marandu palisadegrass pastures was achieved with cuts at 15 cm. Pastures managed with cutting intervals corresponding to three new leaves per tiller regardless of cutting height evaluated, accumulated high quantities of leaf, a highly desirable component for animal feeding purposes.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito dos métodos de cálculo de graus-dia e de datas de semeadura na determinação do filocrono de cultivares de trigo (Triticum aestivum). Foi conduzido um experimento em campo, com 13 datas de semeadura, durante três anos (2005-2007), em Santa Maria, RS, usando-se seis cultivares de trigo: BRS Louro, CEP 52, CEP 51, BRS 177, Nova Era e BRS Tarumã. O filocrono (°C dia folha-1) foi estimado pelo inverso do coeficiente angular da regressão linear entre o estádio de Haun e a soma térmica acumulada calculada por seis métodos. O método de cálculo da soma térmica afeta as estimativas do filocrono em trigo.O uso das três temperaturas cardinais de emissão de folhas e a comparação das temperaturas cardinais com a temperatura mínima e máxima do ar melhora a precisão na simulação do desenvolvimento vegetativo dessa cultura, em comparação aos demais métodos. O filocrono varia com a cultivar de trigo e com a data de semeadura, e cultivares mais precoces (BRS Louro e CEP 51) têm menor filocrono do que cultivares tardias (Nova Era e BRS Tarumã). Em semeaduras no outono ou inverno, o filocrono é maior do que em semeaduras de primavera ou verão.The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of degree-days and sowing dates calculation methods on phyllochron determination in wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivars. A three-year field experiment with 13 sowing dates was conducted for three years (2005-2007) in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, using six wheat cultivars: BRS Louro, CEP 52, CEP 51, BRS 177, Nova Era and BRS Tarumã. The phyllochron (°C day leaf-1) was estimated by the inverse of the slope of the linear regression of the Haun stage against the accumulated thermal time calculated using six methods. The thermal time calculation method affects wheat phyllochron estimates. The use of the three cardinal temperatures for leaf emission and cardinal temperatures compared to the minimum and maximum air temperatures improves the precision of the vegetative development simulation of this crop, in comparison to the other methods. The phyllochron varies with wheat cultivar and sowing date, and early cultivars (BRS Louro and CEP 51) have lower phyllochron than late cultivars (Nova Era and BRS Tarumã). The phyllochron is greater in sowings carried out during fall and winter than in the ones carried out during spring and summer.

Estudos sobre o desenvolvimento vegetativo da mandioca cultivada nas condições subtropicais do Brasil são escassos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o filocrono e o número final de folhas na haste principal e nas ramificações simpodiais de uma variedade de mandioca em diferentes épocas de plantio, em condições de clima subtropical. Um experimento de campo foi conduzido em Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), com quatro datas de plantio: 26/09/2006, 18/10/2006, 08/11/2006 e 28/11/2006. A variedade usada foi a FEPAGRO RS13, com caule do tipo simpodial tricotômico, no delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos (datas de plantio) e quatro parcelas de 4,0 x 9,0m, com cinco fileiras e espaçamento 0,80 x 0,80m. Em seis plantas por parcela selecionadas aleatoriamente, foi feita a contagem semanal do número de folhas visíveis (NF) e do número final de folhas (NFF) da haste principal (HP) e das ramificações simpodiais de primeira (RS1) e de segunda (RS2) ordem. O filocrono (°C dia folha-1) foi estimado para HP, RS1 e RS2 pelo inverso do coeficiente angular da regressão linear entre NF e soma térmica acumulada, considerando a temperatura base de 14°C. O filocrono aumentou na seqüência HPRS1>RS2. Ambos filocrono e NFF variaram com a época de plantio, sendo o fotoperíodo uma possível causa da variação. Dentro das ramificações simpodiais RS1 e RS2, o filocrono e o NFF não são diferentes entre as hastes.Studies on the vegetative development of cassava grown in subtropical conditions of Brazil are scarce. The objective of this study was to determine the phyllochron and the final leaf number on the main stem and on sympodial branches of a cassava variety grown in different planting dates in a subtropical climate. A field experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, RS, with four planting dates: 09/26/2006, 10/18/2006, 11/08/2006 and 11/28/2006. The variety FEPAGRO RS13, with tricotomic growth habit, was used in a complete randomized design with four treatments (planting dates) and four 4.0 x 9.0m plots with five rows and 0.8 x 0.8m spacing in each planting date. On the main stem (MS) and on the first order (BR1) and second order (BR2) sympodial branches of six plants per plot randomly selected, the number of visible leaves (NL) on a weekly basis, and the final leaf number (FLN) were measured. The phyllochron on MS, BR1 and BR2 was estimated by the inverse of the slope of the linear regression of NL against accumulated thermal time, assuming a base temperature of 14°C. Phyllochron increased in the sequence MSBR1>BR2. Both phyllochron and FLN varied according to planting date, with photoperiod being a possible cause of such variation. Within BR1 and BR2 sympodial branches, phyllochron and FLN were not different among stems.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram estimar o filocrono, relacionar a área foliar com o número de folhas e determinar a produtividade de frutos em plantas de três genótipos de berinjela conduzidas com uma e duas hastes dentro de estufa plástica. O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental do Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Foram utilizados três genótipos de berinjela: Nápoli, Comprida Roxa e Ciça. O transplante das mudas foi realizado com cinco folhas definitivas no dia 29 de outubro de 2007. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições, compostas de duas fileiras de oito plantas. Em quatro plantas de cada repetição, foram realizadas observações do número de folhas na haste principal e na secundária. Em duas plantas de cada repetição, foi medida a largura das folhas na haste principal e na secundária. O filocrono foi estimado pelo inverso do coeficiente angular da regressão linear entre o número de folhas acumuladas na haste e a soma térmica acumulada após o transplante. A emissão de folhas na berinjela foi mais rápida nas plantas conduzidas com duas hastes. A área foliar da berinjela pode ser estimada por meio do número de folhas acumuladas. A produtividade de frutos de berinjela foi maior nas plantas conduzidas com duas hastes, sendo o genótipo Ciça aquele que apresentou maior produtividade de frutos.The objective of this study was to estimate the phyllochron, to associate the leaf area to the leaf number and to determine fruit yield of eggplants grown with one and two stems inside a plastic greenhouse. An experiment was carried at the experimental area of the Plant Science Department of the Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Three eggplant genotypes were used: Nápoli, Comprida roxa, and Ciça. Five-leaf seedlings were transplanted on 10/29/2007. The experimental design was a complete randomized blocks with four replications composed by two rows with eight plants. The number of leaves on the main stem and secondary branches was counted in four plants of each replication. Leaf width was measured on two plants per replication. The phyllochron was estimated as the inverse of the slope of the linear regression between the leaf number and the accumulated thermal time after transplanting. Eggplant fruit yield was greater in plants grown with two stems than and Ciça had the higher fruit yield among genotypes. The time for leaves emergence in eggplant was reduced in plants with two stems than in plants with only the main stem. Leaf area of eggplant can be estimated as function of the accumulated number of leaves. Eggplant fruit yield was greater in plants conducted with two stems than with only the main stem, and Ciça presented the greatest yield among genotypes.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar o filocrono em plantas de calêndula (Calendula officinalis L.) cultivadas em diferentes épocas de semeaduras. Realizaram-se três épocas de semeaduras: 06/04/2005, 23/06/2005 e 03/10/2006, no interior de uma estufa plástica com área de 240m2, instalada no campus da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, UFSM. A semeadura foi realizada em vasos plásticos com capacidade volumétrica para cinco litros. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com 320 vasos em cada época, sendo distribuído em quatro fileiras de 80 vasos cada. Em uma planta de oito vasos de cada quatro fileiras, fez-se a contagem, semanalmente, do número de folhas emergidas da haste principal e na primeira haste lateral. Os dados do número de folhas foram correlacionados com a soma térmica diária acumulada, considerando-se uma temperatura base de 8°C. Constatou-se que o filocrono variou com a época de semeadura, sendo o menor valor igual 15,9°C dia folha-1, obtido na 2ª época de semeadura e o maior, igual a 24,5°C dia folha-1, na 1ª época na haste principal e 48,9°C dia folha-1 na semeadura de outubro na primeira haste lateral.The objective of this study was to estimate the phyllochron in calendula (Calendula officinalis L.) grown in different sowing dates. Three sowing dates (06/04/2005, 23/06/2005 and 03/10/2006) were performed inside a 240m2 plastic greenhouse at the Campus of the Federal University of Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Sowing was in five liter plastic pots. The experimental design was a completely randomized with 320 pots on each sowing date and rows with 80 pots. The number of leaves in the main stem and oi the first lateral branch was counted on a weekly basis in one plant of eight pots. The number of leaves data was regressed against accumulated thermal time, assuming a base temperature of 8oC. The main stem phyllochron varied with sowing date, with the lowest value (15.9°C day leaf -1) obtained on the second sowing date, and the greatest value (24.5°C day leaf -1) obtained on the first sowing date. The greatest phyllochron on the first order lateral branch was 48.9°C day leaf -1 in the October sowing date.

O número de folhas acumulado (NF) na haste principal está associado com o aparecimento de vários estádios de desenvolvimento da cultura da mandioca. O início de acumulação de amido (IAA) nas raízes tuberosas da mandioca marca o início da translocação dos fotoassimilados para o principal órgão de reserva nessa espécie. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar o filocrono e identificar um indicador morfológico baseado no NF para o IAA em mandioca plantada em diferentes épocas. Um experimento a campo foi conduzido em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil, com quatro épocas de plantio (28/09; 11/10; 16/11 e 27/12/2005). A variedade de mandioca usada foi a "RS 13", plantada em baldes de 12 litros, enterrados no espaçamento com 2,0 x 0,8m. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com 11 repetições. A soma térmica diária (STd, °C dia) foi calculada a partir da emergência e acumulada por: STa = sigmaSTd. O IAA foi determinado nas plantas de cada balde quando uma raiz atingia um diâmetro de 1cm. O NF na data do IAA e o número final de folhas (NFF) até o primeiro simpódio também foram determinados. O filocrono variou de 20,3 a 29,5°C dia folha-1 e seus valores foram maiores quanto mais tardio foi o plantio. O NFF variou entre as épocas de plantio, aumentando com o atraso do plantio. O NF no IAA foi similar nas quatro épocas de plantio e ocorreu quando, em média, o NF corresponde a 20,9 (±1,0) folhas.The accumulated number of leaves (NF) on the main stem is related to the appearance of several developmental stages in cassava. The beginning of starch accumulation (IAA) in the fibrous roots of cassava switches the source/sink ratio because of the translocation of photoassimilates to the major storage organ in this species. This study was aimed at estimating the phyllochron and identifing a morphological indicator based on NF for IAA in cassava grown in several planting dates. A field experiment was carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, with four planting dates (28/09, 11/10, 16/11 and 27/12/2005). The variety RS 13 was used and planted in 12 l pots, buried in the soil in a 2.0 x 0.8m spacing. The experimental desing was a completely randomized with 11 replications. Daily degree-days (STd, °C day) were calculated starting at emergency and accumulated by STa = sigmaSTd. IAA was determined on the plants when one root reached a diameter of 0.01m. NF on the date of IAA and the main sterm final leaf number (NFF) up to the first sympodial branches were determined. The plyllochron varied from 20.3 to 29.5°C day leaf -1, with larger values in the two latest planting dates. The NFF varied among planting dates, increasing as planting was delayed. The NF at IAA was similar for the four planting dates and occurred when NF was on average 20.9 (± 1.0) leaves.

O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, no período de maio a agosto de 2005, com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da adubação fosfatada e nitrogenada sobre as características morfogênicas e estruturais do capim-tanzânia. As avaliações morfogênicas englobaram as taxas de aparecimento e alongamento de folhas e a taxa de alongamento de colmo. As avaliações estruturais foram o número total de folhas e número de folhas verdes por perfilho, número de perfilhos da planta e comprimento final da folha. Foi utilizado delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 4 x 2, sendo quatro doses de fósforo (0, 50, 100 e 150 kg/ha de P2O5) e duas doses de nitrogênio (0 e 100 kg/ha de N) com quatro repetições. Foram utilizados vasos com capacidade de 6,3 litros cada, que, após desbaste, permaneceram com quatro plantas por vaso. As doses de N e P foram determinantes para as taxas de alongamento de folhas e alongamento de colmo, o número de perfilhos por planta e número de folhas verdes por perfilho. O suprimento de nitrogênio teve efeito positivo sobre a taxa de aparecimento de folhas, o número total de folhas e o comprimento final da folha do capim-tanzânia. A maioria das variáveis estudadas foi influenciada pela aplicação de fósforo, quando associada à aplicação do nitrogênio.The experiment was accomplished in a greenhouse from May to August of 2005, with the objective of to evaluate the effect of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilization on morphogenetic and structural characteristicas of Tanzania grass. The morphogenetic evaluations included leaf appearance, leaf elongation rate, and stem elongation rate. The structural evaluations measurements were: number of leaves, number of green leaves, number of tillers per plant, and final leaf length. It was used a complete randomized experimental design in 4 x 2 factorial scheme, being four phosphorus doses (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg of P2O5/ha) and two doses of nitrogen (0 and 100 kg of N/ha), with four replicates. It was utilized pots with 6.3 liters capacity each, leaving four plants per pot after staging. The N and P combination affected leaf elongation rate, stem elongation rate, number of tillers per plant, and number of green leaves per tillers. Nitrogen supply had a positive effect on leaf appearance rate, number of leaves, and final leaf length of tanzaniagrass. The majority of the studied variables were affected by the use of phosphorus when associated to N fertilization.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar o filocrono na haste principal e em hastes laterais de primeira ordem e estimar a área foliar a partir do número de folhas em três genótipos de tomateiro cultivados em estufa plástica. Um experimento foi conduzido em estufa plástica na área experimental do Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS. Foram utilizados três genótipos de tomate: "Kátia", "Durino" e "Emperor". O transplante das mudas com 3-4 folhas definitivas foi realizado em 31/10/2005. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições, compostas de duas fileiras de oito plantas. Em seis plantas de cada repetição foram realizadas observações do número de folhas na haste principal e em hastes laterais de primeira ordem e em duas plantas de cada repetição foram medidos o comprimento e a largura das folhas na haste principal. O filocrono foi estimado pelo inverso do coeficiente angular da regressão linear entre o número de folhas acumuladas na haste e a soma térmica acumulada após o transplante. O filocrono da haste principal foi menor do que o filocrono das hastes laterais de primeira ordem. A área foliar do tomateiro em uma haste pode ser estimada através do número de folhas acumuladas nesta haste.This study was aimed at estimating the phyllochron on the main stem and on first order lateral branches, and estimate leaf area from leaf number in three tomato genotypes grown inside a plastic green-house. An experiment was conducted inside a plastic greenhouse at the experimental area of the Plant Science Department of the Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Three tomato genotypes were used: 'Kátia', 'Durino', and 'Emperor'. Three to four-leaf seedlings were transplanted on 10/31/2005. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replications composed of two 8-plants rows. The number of leaves on the main stem and on first order lateral branches was counted in six plants of each replication. Leaf length and width were measured on two plants per replication. The phyllochron was estimated as the inverse of the slope of the linear regression of leaf number against accumulated thermal time from transplanting. The phyllochron on the main stem was greater than on the first order lateral branches. Leaf area on a stem of the tomato plant can be estimated from the number of accumulated lateral leaves on this stem.

O girassol é a quarta oleaginosa em produção de grãos no mundo e alguns genótipos são usados com finalidade ornamental para flor de corte e de vaso (girassol de vaso). O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes fontes e doses de nitrogênio sobre alguns parâmetros de crescimento, desenvolvimento e no retardamento da senescência das folhas basais em girassol de vaso. Um experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em Santa Maria, RS. Os tratamentos foram: uréia, nitrato de amônio e nitrato de cálcio nas doses de 0, 50, 100 e 150mg L-1 de N na solução de fertirrigação, com duas aplicações semanais. O experimento foi um bi-fatorial (fontes e doses de N) no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com seis repetições. Cada repetição foi um vaso no 15 (1,3L, 15cm de altura) com uma planta por vaso. As variáveis analisadas foram: número final de folhas, altura final de plantas, porcentagem de folhas senescentes no ponto de venda, porcentagem de folhas senescentes no final de vida de vaso, área foliar total da planta, filocrono e a soma térmica acumulada da emergência ao botão visível e da emergência ao ponto de venda. A fonte de N tem influência sobre a área foliar do girassol de vaso, sendo a uréia recomendável para o maior crescimento das folhas. A dose de N em torno de 100mg L-1 aplicada duas vezes por semana via fertirrigação favorece características desejáveis para a comercialização, como precocidade e retardamento da senescência das folhas.Sunflower is the fourth oil grain crop grown worldwide and some genotypes are used with ornamental purpose as cut and pot-grown flower. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different sources and rates of nitrogen on some growth and developmental parameters, and on the delay of leaf senescence in pot-grown sunflower. An experiment was carried out inside a greenhouse in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Treatments were: urea, ammonium nitrate and calcium nitrate at rates of 0, 50, 100 and 150mg L-1 of N in the fertigation solution, with two weekly applications. The experiment was a two-factorial (sources and rates of N) in a completely randomized design with six replications. Each replication was a number 15 pot (1.5L, 15cm height) with one plant/pot. The variables analyzed were: final leaf number, final plant height, percentage of senescent leaves at selling stage and at the end of vase life, total leaf area per plant, phyllochron, and the thermal time from emergency to visible bud and from emergency to selling stage. The N source influences leaf area of pot-grown sunflower, with urea being recommend for higher leaf growth. The rate of around 100mg L-1 of N applied twice a week through fertigation promoted desirable characteristics for commercialization such as earliness and delay of leaf senescence.

O filocrono é definido como o tempo necessário para o aparecimento de folhas sucessivas em um colmo, no caso de espécies da família das Poáceas. Através do filocrono, pode-se calcular o número de folhas acumuladas, o que é uma excelente maneira de caracterizar o desenvolvimento vegetal. Este trabalho teve por objetivo estimar o filocrono de sete cultivares de arroz irrigado utilizadas na Região Sul do Brasil, em cinco épocas de semeadura, na região ecoclimática da Depressão Central do Rio Grande do Sul. Um experimento de campo foi realizado em Santa Maria, RS, durante os anos agrícolas de 2003/2004 e 2004/2005, com cinco épocas de semeadura em cada ano agrícola. Foram utilizadas sete cultivares de arroz recomendadas para a Região Sul do País: "IRGA 421", "IRGA 416", "IRGA 417", "IRGA 420", "BR-IRGA 409", "BRS 7 TAIM" e "EPAGRI 109". O filocrono (°C dia folha-1) foi estimado pelo inverso do coeficiente angular da regressão linear entre o número de folhas no colmo principal, determinado conforme o Estádio de Haun, e a soma térmica diária acumulada (temperatura base = 11°C) a partir da emergência das plantas. As diferenças genotípicas são pequenas e podem ser desprezadas, enquanto que o ambiente, principalmente pela época de semeadura, tem grande efeito sobre o filocrono em arroz.The phyllochron is defined as the time needed for appearance of successive leaves on a culm in plants of the Poaceae family. Using the concept of phyllochron, it is possible to calculate the number of accumulated leaves, which is an excellent parameter to measure the plant development. The objective of this study was to estimate the phyllochron of seven rice cultivars grown in Southern Brazil in five sowing dates in the Central Region of Rio Grande do Sul State. A two-year field experiment was carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil during 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 growing seasons, with five sowing dates each year. Seven rice cultivars recommended for Southern Brazil were used: IRGA 421, IRGA 416, IRGA 417, IRGA 420, BR-IRGA 409, BRS 7 TAIM and EPAGRI 109. The phyllochron (°C day leaf-1) was estimated by the inverse of the slope of the linear regression between main culm number of accumulated leaves (represented by the Haun Stage) and thermal time (base temperature = 11°C) accumulated from plant emergence. Genotype differences are small and can be neglected, but the environment, mainly through sowing date, has a large effect on phyllochron in rice.

The aim of this study was to determine phyllochron in strawberry cultivars, from two origins during two crop years, conducted in low tunnel. Experiments were conducted at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, campus Frederico Westphalen (CESNORS/UFSM), Brazil, evaluating 'Camarosa', 'Camino Real' and 'Albion' strawberry cultivars. During the 2012 crop year, seedlings from Chile and Pelotas/RS, Brazil were evaluated, for the 2013 crop year, only seedlings from Chile were submitted to evaluations. In order to determine the phyllochron, twice a week the numbers of leaves (NL) of the main crown were counted and a regression between NL and accumulated thermal time (ATT) was held. The experimental design was a complete randomized block, with three repetitions with the evaluation of 12 plants per experimental unity, consisting of a factorial. For 2012 and 2013 crop years, it is possible to conclude that 'Camarosa' and 'Camino Real' cultivars required higher accumulation of degreedays (ºC day-1) to issue each successive leaf than cv. 'Albion', which, in turn, presented higher rates of leaf emergence, being considered earlier. Regarding to origin, seedlings from cv. 'Albion' from Chile presented lower total phyllochron values and for samples from Pelotas, no difference among cultivars was observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the mechanisms by which some C4 grasses grow more than others at moderately low temperatures (~12-20°C) is valuable to select materials to lengthen the growing season. In turn, the determination of leaf lifespan for each material to be used is relevant to optimize the balance between herbage production and herbage utilization. The objectives of this study were to analyze the growth capacity and the leaf lifespan in two native materials (Pappophorum caespitosum and Trichloris crinita) and in four materials introduced (Cenchrus ciliaris cv. 'Texas-4464', Cenchrus ciliaris cv. 'Bella', Panicum coloratum cv. 'Klein' and Panicum maximum cv. 'Gatton Panic') commonly used in Argentina. Under non-limiting growth conditions, the rate of leaf appearance and leaf elongation, the number of growing leaves and the leaf lifespan, were measured. The materials showed similar leaf growth capacity through contrasting mechanisms: while three of them (P. coloratum, P. maximum and P. caespitosum) showed higher growth of individual leaves, the rest (C. ciliaris cv. 'Texas-4464', C. ciliaris cv. 'Bella' and T. crinita) showed higher number of growing leaves. The leaf lifespan was not significantly different between materials evaluated. Interestingly, in agreement with previous results obtained in a comparison of C3 grasses, it was observed that materials possessing a greater number of growing leaves had lower values of leaf lifespan. Avaliaram-se as características morfogênicas, fisiológicas e produtivas de espécies de Brachiaria, durante e após período de estresse hídrico. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em um esquema fatorial 4 x 5 quatro espécies de Brachiaria (B. decumbens, B. brizantha, B. humidicola e B. mutica) e cinco níveis de potencial hídrico do solo (-0, 01, -0, 03, -0, 1, -0, 5 e -1, 5 MPa) em um delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. O experimento foi instalado em casa de vegetação, em colunas de PVC com 40 cm de altura e 30 cm de diâmetro. Os déficits hídricos foram impostos durante 23 dias e, após este período, um grupo de plantas foi mantido sob condições normais de disponibilidade de água no solo, durante, aproximadamente, uma semana, para se avaliar a capacidade de recuperação das plantas. A taxa de alongamento das lâminas foliares foi comprometida em B. brizantha e a taxa de senescência de lâminas foliares em B. mutica foi aumentada com o decréscimo do potencial hídrico no solo, denotando a maior sensibilidade destas duas espécies ao déficit hídrico. Observou-se controle estomático sobre as trocas gasosas em folhas de todas as espécies. O déficit hídrico reduziu a fotossíntese líquida em todas espécies, mais acentuadamente em B. mutica e B. humidicola. Todas as espécies recuperaram suas atividades fotossintéticas normais após o déficit hídrico, mas apenas a B. brizantha restabeleceu o status hídrico de seus tecidos foliares. O déficit hídrico afetou mais acentuadamente a área de lâminas foliares verdes em B. brizantha e B. decumbens, a produção de matéria verde seca de lâminas foliares em todas as espécies estudadas, e a produção de matéria verde seca de colmos em B. decumbens e B. mutica.This study aimed to evaluate the tolerance of Brachiaria species (B. decumbens, B. brizantha, B. humidicola and B. mutica) to low soil water potential. Morphogenetical, physiological and production characteristics were estimated during and after the stress period. The experimental treatments resulted from 4 x 5 factorial arrangement consisting of four Brachiaria species and five soil water potential (-0, 01; -0, 03; -0, 1; -0, 5 and -1, 5MPa) distributed in randomized block design, with three replications. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse, in PVC column pot 40 cm high and diameter of 30 cm. The soil water potentials were imposed during 23 days after a regrowth period of 22 days. After the period of stress, soil moisture was maintained at field capacity for one week to evaluate the recovery of the plants. Leaf blade elongation rate in B. brizantha and leaf blade senescence rate in B. mutica varied across soil water potential, suggesting these species to be less tolerant to low soil water potential. Stomatal gas exchange control was observed in all species. Water deficit reduced photosynthesis rate of all species, particularly in B. mutica and B. humidicola. The species recovered their photosynthesis rate after water deficit, but only B. brizantha recovered its leaf tissue water potential. Soil water deficit had a detrimental effect on green leaf dry matter production of all species through reduced production of green leaf area mainly in B. brizantha and B. decumbens and reduced culm dry matter production of B. decumbens and B. mutica.

To predict mulberry (Morus alba L.‘Shin-ichinose’) vegetative growth, I constructed shoot elongation and leaf appearance models for mulberry grown in field conditions. The shoot elongation rate and leaf appearance rate were decided by the product of growth activity (GA) and potential rates (PR) realized at the maximum GA under a given environmental condition. GA is dimensionless and ranges from 0 to 1. GA and PR of shoot elongation rate were determined by temperature, photoperiod and shoot length, and temperature and shoot length, respectively. GA and PR of leaf appearance rate were determined by photoperiod, and temperature, respectively. Model parameters were estimated by an iterative method using five-year mulberry growth data. The values calculated by both models were similar to the measured values and represented annual fluctuation well. These models also showed good estimation of data, which were not used for determining parameters. Therefore, it seems that these models well represent mulberry vegetative growth response to temperature and photoperiod, and are practical.

Leaf appearance rate and phyllochron are related variables which play a central role in forage production. Phyllochron is the time interval between the appearance of successive leaves and varies according to a number of environmental factors, among which temperature is the most important. The experiment was conducted in natural pasture with the aim of testing phyllochron variation under different seasons, herbage allowances, and topographic positions. Marked tillers were used to define the phyllochron, establishing a relationship between the number of leaves produced against thermal time during the sampling period. The time (expressed in °C) needed for the emergence of a leaf is equal to 1/b, where b is the slope coefficient of the regression. The lines for the season combinations, herbage allowances and topographic positions sampled were compared. Under Spring and Summer conditions, the phyllochrons for P. notatum and C. selloana were 156°C and 238°C respectively, regardless of treatment.A taxa de aparecimento de folhas (TAF) e o filocrono são conceitos associados, que exercem forte influência na produção de forragem. O filocrono é o intervalo de tempo entre o aparecimento de duas folhas sucessivas acima do pseudocaule e varia de acordo com alguns fatores ambientais, sendo a temperatura o fator determinante. O experimento foi conduzido em pastagem natural em Eldorado do Sul, RS, com o objetivo de testar a variação no filocrono em diferentes estações do ano, níveis de oferta de forragem (NOF) e posições topográficas (PT). Para a definição do filocrono, foram amostrados perfilhos marcados e estabeleceu-se a relação entre número de folhas produzidas e a soma térmica do período amostral. A soma térmica (em °C) necessária para que a planta emita uma folha é igual a 1/b, sendo b o coeficiente angular verificado na regressão. As retas obtidas para as combinações entre estações, NOF e PT foram comparadas. Em condições de primavera e verão, se obteve filocrono de 156°C para P. notatum e de 238°C para C. selloana, independentemente dos tratamentos avaliados.

Fodder beet is a highly productive forage crop of expanding use in livestock production systems in temperate regions, notably in Europe and New Zealand. The main determinant of fodder beet productivity is the amount of light intercepted by the crop canopy, which is regulated by temperature and the availability of water and nitrogen (N) for plant development and growth. The quantitative understanding of canopy formation processes under constraining growth conditions is an essential step for the development of biophysical simulation models of new crops for research and predictive purposes. In this study, we provided the first estimates of key canopy formation parameters in fodder beet both under optimum and water- and N-limited supply, in two field experiments in Lincoln, Canterbury, New Zealand. Specifically, the base temperature for leaf appearance in fodder beet was estimated as 0 °C. The range of the critical LAI (c. 90–95% of light interception) was 3–4 m 2 /m 2 . The phyllochron was 48–53 °Cd/leaf in unstressed crops and 60 °Cd/leaf in water stressed crops, with no effect of N supply. Leaf senescence rates varied widely (from 42 to 260 °Cd/leaf) depending on water availability and canopy cover. Leaf expansion, appearance and senescence rates fully recovered following a period of water stress to values similar to those observed in unstressed crops in response to late season rainfall events. Leaf area expansion rates (LAER) ranged from 0.0012 to 0.0034 m 2 /m 2 /°Cd and was reduced both by limited water and N supply. Leaf area senescence rates (LASR) ranged from 0.0005 to 0.0019 m 2 /m 2 /°Cd, with low values recorded during drought periods when crop growth was negligible. Canopy architecture, characterised by the extinction coefficient ( k ), was less sensitive to water stress than canopy expansion or senescence with a conservative value of 0.74. This first quantitative description of fodder beet canopy forming processes can assist the development of predictive approaches, such as biophysical simulation models, for application in research, extension and teaching. Prediction of mulberry (Moms alba L. cv. Shinn-ichinose) growth is necessary to cope with recent trends in mulberry cultivation. To develop a mulberry growth model, I investigated the response of mulberry growth to temperature. Mulberry saplings were grown in 1995 and 1996 at four constant (20, 24, 28, 32°C) and one diurnally fluctuating (32/24°C -mean 28°C) temperature conditions for 50-60 days in phytotrons under natural sunlight. Shoot length and leaf number were measured every 10 days during the temperature treatment and the dry matter of each plant part was measured at the end of the treatment period. Shoot length and leaf number increased exponentially with time at all temperatures examined, and these values increased with the increase in temperature. Shoot dry weight, over the period of the treatment, increased with temperature but the dry weights of stump and root were not affected by temperature. The optimum temperature for mulberry growth and dry matter accumulation was approximately 32°C.

To predict mulberry growth, modeling of shoot elongation and leaf appearance of potted mulberries was attempted. Potted mulberries were grown in temperature-controlled phytotrons. Changes in the rates of mulberry shoot elongation and leaf appearance, and the relationship between the rates and temperature were investigated. The rate of shoot elongation increased until the shoot length reached about 100cm, and became stable thereafter. The rates of both shoot elongation and leaf appearance increased with the increase in temperature from 15°C to 27°C, but not at higher temperatures. However, the rate of leaf appearance increased with the rise in temperature up to 31°C. On the basis of these results, the shoot elongation and leaf appearance of mulberry in phytotron were simulated in non -linear regression models. The relationship between the rate of shoot elongation and temperature, and the rate of leaf appearance and temperature in the model fitted to measured values very well, and that between the rate of shoot elongation and shoot length in the models tended to be in accordance with the measured values. Shoot length and leaf number predicted by the model were in concurrence with the measured values.

Abstract: Field experiments were conducted in the Ebro Delta area (Spain), from 2007 to 2009 with two rice varieties: Gleva and Tebre. The experimental treatments included a series of seed rates, two different water management systems and two different nitrogen fertilization times. The number of leaves on the main stems and their emergence time were periodically tagged. The results indicated that the final leaf number on the main stems in the two rice varieties was quite stable over a three-year period despite of the differences in their respective growth cycles. Interaction between nitrogen fertilization and water management influenced the final leaf number on the main stems. Plant density also had a significant influence on the rate of leaf appearance by extending the phyllochron and postponing the onset of intraspecific competition after the emergence of the 7th leaf on the main stems. Final leaf number on the main stems was negatively related to plant density. A relationship between leaf appearance and thermal time was established with a strong nonlinear function. In direct-seeded rice, the length of the phyllochron increases exponentially in line with the advance of plant development. A general model, derived from 2-year experimental data, was developed and satisfactorily validated; it had a root mean square error of 0.3 leaf. The duration of pre-anthesis developmental phases is of interest in breeding for improved adaptation and yield potential in temperate cereals. Yet despite numerous studies on the genetic control of anthesis (flowering) time and floral initiation, little is known about the genetic control of other pre-anthesis phases. Furthermore, little is known about the effect that changes in the duration of pre-anthesis phases could have on traits related to leaf appearance and tillering, or dry matter accumulation before terminal spikelet initiation (TS). The genetic control of the leaf and spikelet initiation phase (LS; from sowing to TS), the stem elongation phase (SE; from TS to anthesis), and, within the latter, from TS to flag leaf appearance and from then to anthesis, was studied in two doubled-haploid, mapping bread wheat populations, Cranbrook×Halberd and CD87×Katepwa, in two field experiments (ACT and NSW, Australia). The lengths of phases were estimated from measurements of both TS and the onset of stem elongation. Dry weight per plant before TS, rate of leaf appearance, tillering rate, maximum number of tillers and number of leaves, and dry weight per plant at TS were also estimated in the Cranbrook×Halberd population. More genomic regions were identified for the length of the different pre-anthesis phases than for total time to anthesis. Although overall genetic correlations between LS and SE were significant and positive, independent genetic variability between LS and SE, and several quantitative trait loci (QTLs) with different effects on both phases were found in the two populations. Several of these QTLs (which did not seem to coincide with reported major genes) could be of interest for breeding purposes since they were only significant for either LS or SE. There was no relationship between LS and the rate of leaf appearance. LS was strongly and positively correlated with dry weight at TS but only slightly negatively correlated with early vigour (dry weight before TS). Despite significant genetic correlations between LS and some tillering traits, shortening LS so as to lengthen SE without modifying total time to anthesis would not necessarily reduce tillering capacity, as QTLs for tillering traits did not coincide with those QTLs significant only for LS or SE. Therefore, the study of different pre-anthesis phases is relevant for a better understanding of genetic factors regulating developmental time and may offer new tools for fine-tuning it in breeding for both adaptability and yield potential. Abstract: Extending the phase of stem elongation (SE) has been proposed as a tool to further improve yield potential in small-grain cereals. The genetic control of pre-heading phases may also contribute to a better understanding of phenological traits conferring adaptability. Given that an optimized total time to heading is one of the most important traits in a breeding program, a prerequisite for lengthening SE would be that this and the previous phase (leaf and spikelet initiation, LS) should be under different genetic control. We studied the genetic control of these two pre-heading sub-phases (from sowing to the onset of stem elongation, LS, and from then to heading, SE) in terms of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) in a barley double-haploid population derived from the cross Henni×Meltan, both two-rowed spring North European barley cultivars. DH lines (118) and their parents were studied in four field trials in North-Eastern Spain. Genetic control of a number of traits related to leaf appearance and tillering dynamics, which could be important for an early crop canopy structure, were also studied. LS and SE are, at least partially, under a different genetic control in the Henni×Meltan population, mainly due to a QTL on chromosome 2HS. The QTLs responsible for a different control of LS and SE did not seem to correspond with any major gene reported in the literature. Moreover shortening LS, so as to lengthen SE without modifying heading date, would not necessarily imply a negative drawback on traits that could be important for early vigour, such as phyllochron and the onset of tillering. Abstract: The stem elongation phase seems critical in yield potential determination in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Extending its duration, without modifying total time to anthesis, has been proposed as a promising breeding tool. A prerequisite for its use is that the duration of phases before and after jointing (that including leaf and spikelet initiation, LS, and that of stem elongation, SE) should be under different genetic control. In addition, little is known about the implications of changes in the duration of LS and SE upon other developmental traits which could affect other aspects of yield generation, such as phyllochron and tillering. Thus, the objectives of the present work were to study the genetic variability in LS and SE, in traits related to leaf appearance and tillering, as well as their relationships, in a double-haploid (DH) population derived from the cross Henni×Meltan. DH lines and both parents were studied in four field trials. Despite the similarity in development between parents, there was significant genetic variability in duration of both LS and SE (i.e. considerable transgressive segregation was observed), with no major genetic correlations found between them. Although some significant genetic correlations were found between duration of phases and leaf appearance and tillering traits, it has been shown that modifying the duration of LS does not necessarily imply concomitant changes in traits that could be important for an early expansion of the crop canopy (i.e. phyllochron, onset and rate of tillering). The objective of this study was to estimate the phyllochron, to associate the leaf area to the leaf number and to determine fruit yield of eggplants grown with one and two stems inside a plastic greenhouse. An experiment was carried at the experimental area of the Plant Science Department of the Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Three eggplant genotypes were used: Nápoli, Comprida roxa, and Ciça. Five-leaf seedlings were transplanted on 10/29/2007. The experimental design was a complete randomized blocks with four replications composed by two rows with eight plants. The number of leaves on the main stem and secondary branches was counted in four plants of each replication. Leaf width was measured on two plants per replication. The phyllochron was estimated as the inverse of the slope of the linear regression between the leaf number and the accumulated thermal time after transplanting. Eggplant fruit yield was greater in plants grown with two stems than and Ciça had the higher fruit yield among genotypes. The time for leaves emergence in eggplant was reduced in plants with two stems than in plants with only the main stem. Leaf area of eggplant can be estimated as function of the accumulated number of leaves. Eggplant fruit yield was greater in plants conducted with two stems than with only the main stem, and Ciça presented the greatest yield among genotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies on the vegetative development of cassava grown in subtropical conditions of Brazil are scarce. The objective of this study was to determine the phyllochron and the final leaf number on the main stem and on sympodial branches of a cassava variety grown in different planting dates in a subtropical climate. A field experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, RS, with four planting dates: 09/26/2006, 10/18/2006, 11/08/2006 and 11/28/2006. The variety FEPAGRO RS13, with tricotomic growth habit, was used in a complete randomized design with four treatments (planting dates) and four 4.0 x 9.0m plots with five rows and 0.8 x 0.8m spacing in each planting date. On the main stem (MS) and on the first order (BR1) and second order (BR2) sympodial branches of six plants per plot randomly selected, the number of visible leaves (NL) on a weekly basis, and the final leaf number (FLN) were measured. The phyllochron on MS, BR1 and BR2 was estimated by the inverse of the slope of the linear regression of NL against accumulated thermal time, assuming a base temperature of 14°C. Phyllochron increased in the sequence MSBR1>BR2. Both phyllochron and FLN varied according to planting date, with photoperiod being a possible cause of such variation. Abstract: The ability to predict phenology and canopy development is critical in crop models used for simulating likely consequences of alternative crop management and cultivar choice strategies. Here we quantify and contrast the temperature and photoperiod responses for phenology and canopy development of a diverse range of elite Indian and Australian sorghum genotypes (hybrid and landrace). Detailed field experiments were undertaken in Australia and India using a range of genotypes, sowing dates, and photoperiod extension treatments. Measurements of timing of developmental stages and leaf appearance were taken. The generality of photo-thermal approaches to modelling phenological and canopy development was tested. Environmental and genotypic effects on rate of progression from emergence to floral initiation (E-FI) were explained well using a multiplicative model, which combined the intrinsic development rate (R opt), with responses to temperature and photoperiod. Differences in R opt and extent of the photoperiod response explained most genotypic effects. Average leaf initiation rate (LIR), leaf appearance rate and duration of the phase from anthesis to physiological maturity differed among genotypes. The association of total leaf number (TLN) with photoperiod found for all genotypes could not be fully explained by effects on development and LIRs. While a putative effect of photoperiod on LIR would explain the observations, other possible confounding factors, such as air–soil temperature differential and the nature of model structure were considered and discussed. This study found a generally robust predictive capacity of photo-thermal development models across diverse ranges of both genotypes and environments. Hence, they remain the most appropriate models for simulation analysis of genotype-by-management scenarios in environments varying broadly in temperature and photoperiod. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Thermal time (Tt, °C days) was used to quantify germination, emergence and leaf appearance of temperate grassland species from natural and commercial seed populations. Germination requirements of six clovers (Trifolium arvensis, T. dubium, T. glomeratum, T. striatum, T. subterraneum, T. repens) and four grasses (Bromus erectus, Festuca rubra, E ovina, Achnatherum calamagrostis) were determined from constant temperatures from 5 to 35°C. The base temperatures (Tb) were all less than 2.5°C, except for B. erectus (5.8°C). The four grasses had slower rates of germination and a wider tolerance of high temperatures than the clovers. All five annual clovers had a lower thermal time requirement for emergence and seedling development than the perennial Z repens. For four of the species used, the internationally recommended seed testing procedures that requires prechilling was found to be unnecessary and for two others the currently recommended optimum temperatures are higher than the optimum found. The thermal time approach has provided a robust summary of large datasets generated from controlled and field conditions. These easily transferable coefficients can be used to quantify seed and seedling responses to temperature for individual species and should form the basis for redefining seed testing regimes. Abstract: Insufficient phosphorus (P) availability decreases the yield of Zea mays, particularly for sweet corn crops grown in cool environments. This research examined the mechanisms of yield reductions with initial emphasis on canopy expansion processes that affect the interception of solar radiation. Experiments in two consecutive seasons (2001/2002 and 2002/2003) were grown at a low P site (Olsen P=6μgml−1) at Lincoln, New Zealand. Each experiment contained five rates of P application. In 2001/2002 rates of 0, 50, 100, 150, or 200kgPha−1 were applied. In 2002/2003 an additional 0, 0, 10, 20 or 40kgPha−1 was applied to the same plots producing total P treatments of 0, 50, 110, 170 or 240kgPha−1 summed over the two seasons. When P availability was limited (0 or 50kgPha−1) the rates of leaf tip and fully expanded leaf appearance were slower in both seasons. Phyllochrons (°Cd leaf tip−1) were ∼5°Cd longer in crops that received 0kgPha−1 than those fertilised with ≥100kgPha−1. The area of individual leaves was also reduced by low P inputs but the ranking of leaf area by main stem leaf position was conservative. The leaf area of the largest leaf of the unfertilised crops was at least 22% less than the maximum measured leaf area in both seasons. In contrast, P fertiliser application had no effect on leaf senescence. The rate of leaf appearance per plant, individual leaf area and plant population were integrated to calculate green leaf area index (GLAI) and to estimate accumulated radiation interception (RIcum) for these crops. The total RIcum throughout the season in the unfertilised crops was 12–28% less than for those crops that received ≥100kgPha−1 in both seasons. This difference partly explained the differences in crop biomass production in response to P availability. A sensitivity analysis showed that RIcum was equally sensitive to changes of the rate of leaf appearance and the area of individual leaves in response to P supply. Both processes need to be incorporated in mechanistic models of P effects on Z. mays which can be used to design efficient P fertiliser strategies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Despite low net grass growth rates in Ireland between mid-November and February, tissue continuously turns over as new leaves are produced and older leaves senesce. The effects of closing swards from grazing on three dates in autumn (1 September, 20 September and 10 October) on tissue turnover in a perennial ryegrass sward during the winter were examined at two sites in the north-east and south of Ireland. Leaf extension and senescence rates were greater in the south than in the north-east, and were greatest on the earliest closing date at both sites. Leaf appearance and extension rates at both sites were closely correlated with accumulated daily air temperature above 6°C and mean soil temperature. Site-specific factors also influenced tissue flux, possibly including grazing intensity at closing and density of tillers of perennial ryegrass. Swards in the autumn with high herbage masses [>2000 kg dry matter (DM) ha−1 approximately] and high leaf area index (LAI; about 2·5 and above) had the greatest leaf senescence rates and the greatest declines in herbage mass during the winter. Leaf senescence rates per tiller in high LAI swards were correlated positively with amount of leaf per tiller and also the proportion of green leaf in the second youngest expanding leaf lost to senescence. As potentially a complex of interactive factors influences tissue flux in winter, it is proposed that the data from this study be used in conjunction with other data to construct a dynamic model to predict more reliably optimum closing date in autumn for herbage utilization in winter. It has been widely reported that tree leaves have tended to appear earlier in many regions of the northern hemisphere in the last few decades, reflecting climate warming. Satellite observations revealed an 8-day advance in leaf appearance date between 1982 and 1991 in northern latitudes. In situ observations show that leaf appearance dates in Europe have advanced by an average of 6.3 days from 1959 to 1996. Modelling of leaf appearance on the basis of temperature also shows a marked advance in temperate and boreal regions from 1955 to 2002. However, before 1955, reported studies of phenological variations are restricted to local scale. Modelling, ground observations and satellite observations are here combined to analyse phenological variations in Eurasian taiga over nearly a century. The trend observed by remote sensing consists mainly in a shift at the end of the 1980s, reflecting a shift in winter and spring temperature. In western boreal Eurasia, a trend to earlier leaf appearance is evident since the mid-1930s, although it is discontinuous. In contrast, the strong advance in leaf appearance detected over Central Siberia using satellite data in 1982–1991 is strengthened by late springs in 1983–1984; moreover, in this region the green-up timing has displayed successive trends with opposite signs since 1920. Thus, such strong trend is not unusual if considered locally. However, the recent advance is unique in simultaneously affecting most of the Eurasian taiga, the leaf appearance dates after 1990 being the earliest in nearly a century in most of the area.
