Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. We report simulation studies of six low-energy electron-antineutrino detector designs, with the goal of determining their ability to resolve the direction to an antineutrino source. Such detectors with target masses on the one-ton scale are well-suited to reactor monitoring at distances of 5--25 meters from the core. They can provide accurate measurements of reactor operating power, fuel mix, and burnup, as well as unsurpassed nuclear non-proliferation information in a non-contact cooperating reactor scenario such as those used by IAEA. A number of groups around the world are working on programs to develop detectors similar to some of those in this study. Here, we examine and compare several approaches to detector geometry for their ability not only to detect the inverse beta decay (IBD) reaction, but also to determine the source direction of incident antineutrinos. The information from these detectors provides insight into reactor power and burning profile, which is especially useful in constraining the clandestine production of weapons material. In a live deployment, a non-proliferation detector must be able to isolate the subject reactor, possibly from a field of much-larger power reactors; directional sensitivity can help greatly with this task. We also discuss implications for using such detectors in longer-distance observation of reactors, from a few km to hundreds of km. We have modeled six abstracted detector designs, including two for which we have operational data for validating our computer modeling and analytical processes. Antineutrinos from nuclear reactors have the potential to be used for reactor monitoring in the mid- to far-field under certain conditions. Antineutrinos are an unshieldable signal and carry information about the reactor core and the distance they travel. Using gadolinium-doped water Cherenkov detectors for this purpose has been previously proposed alongside rate-only analyses. As antineutrinos carry information about their distance of travel in their energy spectrum, the analyses can be extended to a spectral analysis to gain more knowledge about the detected core. Two complementary analyses are used to evaluate the distance between a proposed gadolinium-doped water-based liquid scintillator detector and a detected nuclear reactor. Example cases are shown for a detector in Boulby Mine, near the Boulby Underground Laboratory in the UK, and six reactor sites in the UK and France. The Optically Segmented Single Volume Scatter Camera (OS-SVSC) aims to image neutron sources for nuclear non-proliferation applications using the kinematic reconstruction of elastic double-scatter events. We report on the design, construction, and calibration of one module of a new prototype. The module includes 16 EJ-204 organic plastic scintillating bars individually wrapped in Teflon tape, each measuring 0.5 cm$\times$0.5 cm$\times$20 cm. The scintillator array is coupled to two custom Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) boards consisting of a 2$\times$8 array of SensL J-Series-60035 Silicon Photomultipliers, which are read out by a custom 16 channel DRS-4 based digitizer board. The electrical crosstalk between SiPMs within the electronics chain is measured as 0.76% $\pm$ 0.11% among all 16 channels. We report the detector response of one module including interaction position, time, and energy, using two different optical coupling materials: EJ-560 silicone rubber optical coupling pads and EJ-550 optical coupling grease. We present results in terms of the overall mean and standard deviation of the z-position reconstruction and interaction time resolutions for all 16 bars in the module. We observed the z-position resolution for gamma interactions in the 0.3 MeVee to 0.4 MeVee range to be 2.24 cm$\pm$1.10 cm and 1.45 cm$\pm$0.19 cm for silicone optical coupling pad and optical grease, respectively. The observed interaction time resolution is 265 ps$\pm$29 ps and 235 ps$\pm$10 ps for silicone optical coupling pad and optical grease, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 21 figures. We present Monte Carlo (MC) simulation results from a study of a compact plastic-scintillator detector suitable for imaging fast neutrons in the 1 -- 10 MeV energy range: the miniTimeCube (mTC). Originally designed for antineutrino detection, the mTC consists of 24 MultiChannel Plate (MCP) photodetectors surrounding a 13 cm cube of boron-doped plastic scintillator. Our simulation results show that waveform digitization of 1536 optically sensitive channels surrounding the scintillator should allow for spatiotemporal determination of individual neutron-proton scatters in the detector volume to $\thicksim$100 picoseconds and $\thicksim$5 mm. A Bayesian estimation framework is presented for multiple-scatter reconstruction, and is used to estimate the incoming direction and energy of simulated individual neutrons. Finally, we show how populations of reconstructed neutrons can be used to estimate the direction and energy spectrum of nearby simulated neutron sources., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures

We report on the position, timing, and energy resolution of a range of plastic scintillator bars and reflector treatments using dual-ended silicon photomultiplier readout. These measurements are motivated by the upcoming construction of an optically segmented single-volume neutron scatter camera, in which neutron elastic scattering off of hydrogen is used to kinematically reconstruct the source direction and energy of an incoming neutron. For this application, interaction position resolutions of about 10 mm and timing resolutions of about 1 ns are necessary to achieve the desired efficiency for fission-energy neutrons. The results presented here indicate that this is achievable with an array of $5\times5\times190~\mathrm{mm}^3$ bars of EJ-204 scintillator wrapped in Teflon tape, read out with SensL's J-series $6\times6~\mathrm{mm}^2$ silicon photomultipliers. With two independent setups, we also explore the systematic variability of the position resolution, and show that, in general, using the difference in the pulse arrival time at the two ends is less susceptible to systematic variation than using the log ratio of the charge amplitude of the two ends. Finally, we measure a bias in the absolute time of interactions as a function of position along the bar: the measured interaction time for events at the center of the bar is $\sim$100 ps later than interactions near the SiPM.

We present neutrino-based options for verifying that the nuclear reactors at North Korea's Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center are no longer operating or that they are operating in an agreed manner, precluding weapons production. Neutrino detectors may be a mutually agreeable complement to traditional verification protocols because they do not require access inside reactor buildings, could be installed collaboratively, and provide persistent and specific observations. At Yongbyon, neutrino detectors could passively verify reactor shutdowns or monitor power levels and plutonium contents, all from outside the reactor buildings. The monitoring options presented here build on recent successes in basic particle physics. Following a dedicated design study, these tools could be deployed in as little as one year at a reasonable cost. In North Korea, cooperative deployment of neutrino detectors could help redirect a limited number of scientists and engineers from military applications to peaceful technical work in an international community. Opportunities for scientific collaboration with South Korea are especially strong. We encourage policymakers to consider collaborative neutrino projects within a broader program of action toward stability and security on the Korean Peninsula.

We explain the two upgoing ultra-high energy shower events observed by ANITA as arising from the decay in the Earth's interior of the quasi-stable dark matter candidate in the CPT symmetric universe. The dark matter particle is a 480 PeV right-handed neutrino that decays into a Higgs boson and a light Majorana neutrino. The latter interacts in the Earth's crust to produce a tau lepton that in turn initiates an atmospheric upgoing shower. The fact that both events emerge at the same angle from the Antarctic ice-cap suggests an atypical dark matter density distribution in the Earth., Comment: 5 pages revtex

We have explored the optimal frequency of interstellar photon communications and benchmarked other particles as information carriers in previous papers of this series. We now compare the latency and bandwidth of sending probes with inscribed matter. Durability requirements such as shields against dust and radiation, as well as data duplication, add negligible weight overhead at velocities <0.2c. Probes may arrive in full, while most of a photon beam is lost to diffraction. Probes can be more energy efficient per bit, and can have higher bandwidth, compared to classical communication, unless a photon receiver is placed in a stellar gravitational lens. Dramatically improved data from observatories like the CoRoT and Kepler spacecraft have recently facilitated nonlinear time series analysis and phenomenological modeling of variable stars, including the search for strange (aka fractal) or chaotic dynamics. We recently argued [Lindner et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114 (2015) 054101] that the Kepler data includes "golden" stars, whose luminosities vary quasiperiodically with two frequencies nearly in the golden ratio, and whose secondary frequencies exhibit power-law scaling with exponent near -1.5, suggesting strange nonchaotic dynamics and singular spectra. Here we use a series of phenomenological models to make plausible the connection between golden stars and fractal spectra. Every second greater than $10^{25}$ antineutrinos radiate to space from Earth, shining like a faint antineutrino star. Underground antineutrino detectors have revealed the rapidly decaying fission products inside nuclear reactors, verified the long-lived radioactivity inside our planet, and informed sensitive experiments for probing fundamental physics. Mapping the anisotropic antineutrino flux and energy spectrum advance geoscience by defining the amount and distribution of radioactive power within Earth while critically evaluating competing compositional models of the planet. We present the Antineutrino Global Map 2015 (AGM2015), an experimentally informed model of Earth's surface antineutrino flux over the 0 to 11 MeV energy spectrum, along with an assessment of systematic errors. The open source AGM2015 provides fundamental predictions for experiments, assists in strategic detector placement to determine neutrino mass hierarchy, and aids in identifying undeclared nuclear reactors. We use cosmochemically and seismologically informed models of the radiogenic lithosphere/mantle combined with the estimated antineutrino flux, as measured by KamLAND and Borexino, to determine the Earth's total antineutrino luminosity at $3.4^{+2.3}_{-2.2} \times 10^{25} \bar{\nu}_e$. We find a dominant flux of geo-neutrinos, predict sub-equal crust and mantle contributions, with $\sim1\%$ of the total flux from man-made nuclear reactors., Comment: Additional online content available at http://www.ultralytics.com/agm2015

Fast Radios Bursts (FRBs) show large dispersion measures (DMs), suggesting an extragalactic location. We analyze the DMs of the 11 known FRBs in detail and identify steps as integer multiples of half the lowest DM found, 187.5cm$^{-3}$ pc, so that DMs occur in groups centered at 375, 562, 750, 937, 1125cm$^{-3}$ pc, with errors observed <5%. We estimate the likelhood of a coincidence as 5:10,000. We speculate that this could originate from a Galaxy population of FRBs, with Milky Way DM contribution as model deviations, and an underlying generator process that produces FRBs with DMs in discrete steps. However, we find that FRBs tend to arrive at close to the full integer second, like man-made perytons. If this holds, FRBs would also be man-made. The unprecedented light curves of the Kepler space telescope document how the brightness of some stars pulsates at primary and secondary frequencies whose ratios are near the golden mean, the most irrational number. A nonlinear dynamical system driven by an irrational ratio of frequencies generically exhibits a strange but nonchaotic attractor. For Kepler's "golden" stars, we present evidence of the first observation of strange nonchaotic dynamics in nature outside the laboratory. We examine models and prospects for proton annihilation to dileptons, a process which violates baryon and lepton number each by two. We determine that currently Super-Kamiokande would place the most draconian bound on $pp \rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^+$, ruling out new physics below a scale of $\sim 1.6$ TeV. We also find present and future hadron collider sensitivity to these processes. While 8 TeV LHC data excludes new physics at a scale below $\sim 800$ GeV, the reach of a 14 TeV LHC run is $\sim 1.8$ TeV, putting it on par with the sensitivity of Super-Kamiokande. On the other hand, a 100 TeV proton-proton collider would be sensitive to proton annihilation at a scale up to 10 TeV, allowing it to far exceed the reach of both Super-Kamiokande and the projected 2 TeV reach of Hyper-Kamiokande. Constraints from neutron star observation and cosmological evolution are not competitive. Therefore, although high-luminosity water Cherenkov experiments currently place the leading bounds on baryon and lepton number violation, next generation high-energy hadron colliders will begin surpassing them in sensitivity to some $B/L$-violating processes., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

Learned et. al. proposed that a sufficiently advanced extra-terrestrial civilization may tickle Cepheid and RR Lyrae variable stars with a neutrino beam at the right time, thus causing them to trigger early and jogging the otherwise very regular phase of their expansion and contraction. This would turn these stars into beacons to transmit information throughout the galaxy and beyond. The idea is to search for signs of phase modulation (in the regime of short pulse duration) and patterns, which could be indicative of intentional, omnidirectional signaling. We have performed such a search among variable stars using photometric data from the Kepler space telescope. In the RRc Lyrae star KIC 5520878, we have found two such regimes of long and short pulse durations. The sequence of period lengths, expressed as time series data, is strongly auto correlated, with correlation coefficients of prime numbers being significantly higher ($p=99.8$\%). Our analysis of this candidate star shows that the prime number oddity originates from two simultaneous pulsation periods and is likely of natural origin. Simple physical models elucidate the frequency content and asymmetries of the KIC 5520878 light curve. Despite this SETI null result, we encourage testing other archival and future time-series photometry for signs of modulated stars. We document the presence of a few Cepheid and RR Lyrae variable stars with previously unrecognized characteristics. These stars exhibit the property of a period ratio of main pulsation divided by secondary pulsation P1/P2 very close to sqrt(2). Other stars of these types have period ratios which do not show clustering with a close association and a single remarkable non-harmonic number. Close examination reveals a deviation of multiples of a few times ~0.06% for these stars. This deviation seems to be present in discrete steps on the order of ~0.000390(4), indicating the possible presence of a sort of fine structure in this oscillation., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We present a relationship, E_\nu^{max} = m_{\nu} M_{Planck}/M_{weak}, among the highest observed neutrino energy (~PeV) and the neutrino mass, the weak scale, and the Planck energy. We then discuss some tests of this relationship, and present some theoretical constructs which motivate the relationship. It is possible that all massive particles are subject to maximum energies given by similar relationships, although only the neutrino seems able to offer interesting phenomenology. We discuss implications which include no neutrino detections at energies greater than PeV, and changes in expectations for the highest energy cosmic rays. A virtue of this hypothesis is that it is easily invalidated should neutrinos be observed with energies much great than the PeV scale. The announcement by the IceCube Collaboration of the observation of 28 cosmic neutrino candidates has been greeted with a great deal of justified excitement. The data reported so far depart by 4.3\sigma from the expected atmospheric neutrino background, which raises the obvious question: "Where in the Cosmos are these neutrinos coming from?" We review the many possibilities which have been explored in the literature to address this question, including origins at either Galactic or extragalactic celestial objects. The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early Universe, the dynamics of the supernova bursts that produced the heavy elements necessary for life and whether protons eventually decay --- these mysteries at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early evolution of our Universe, its current state and its eventual fate. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) represents an extensively developed plan for a world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions. LBNE is conceived around three central components: (1) a new, high-intensity neutrino source generated from a megawatt-class proton accelerator at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, (2) a near neutrino detector just downstream of the source, and (3) a massive liquid argon time-projection chamber deployed as a far detector deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. This facility, located at the site of the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, is approximately 1,300 km from the neutrino source at Fermilab -- a distance (baseline) that delivers optimal sensitivity to neutrino charge-parity symmetry violation and mass ordering effects. This ambitious yet cost-effective design incorporates scalability and flexibility and can accommodate a variety of upgrades and contributions. With its exceptional combination of experimental configuration, technical capabilities, and potential for transformative discoveries, LBNE promises to be a vital facility for the field of particle physics worldwide, providing physicists from around the globe with opportunities to collaborate in a twenty to thirty year program of exciting science. In this paper we introduce the concept of what we call "NUDAR" (NeUtrino Direction and Ranging), making the point that measurements of the observed energy and direction vectors can be employed to passively deduce the exact three-dimensional location and thermal power of geophysical and anthropogenic neutrino sources from even a single detector. We present the most precise background estimates to date, all handled in full three dimensions, as functions of depth and geographical location. For the present calculations, we consider a hypothetical 138 kiloton detector which can be transported to an ocean site and deployed to an operational depth. We present a Bayesian estimation framework to incorporate any a priori knowledge of the reactor that we are trying to detect, as well as the estimated uncertainty in the background and the oscillation parameters. Most importantly, we fully employ the knowledge of the reactor spectrum and the distance-dependent effects of neutrino oscillations on such spectra. The latter, in particular, makes possible determination of range from one location, given adequate signal statistics. Further, we explore the rich potential of improving detection with even modest improvements in individual neutrino direction determination. We conclude that a 300 MWth reactor can indeed be geolocated, and its operating power estimated with one or two detectors in the hundred kiloton class at ranges out to a few hundred kilometers. We note that such detectors would have natural and non-interfering utility for scientific studies of geo-neutrinos, neutrino oscillations, and astrophysical neutrinos. A surface liquid Argon Far Detector for LBNE has formidable background issues from cosmic rays. There is no evidence they can be overcome.

We determine the neutrino spectra arising from low-mass (4-10 GeV) dark matter annihilating in the sun. We also determine the low-mass dark matter capture rates (element by element in the sun), assuming dark matter interacts either through elastic contact interactions, elastic long-range interactions, or inelastic contact interactions. These are the non-detector-specific data needed for determining the sensitivity of a neutrino detector to dark matter annihilating in the sun. As an application, we estimate the sensitivity of a one kiloton liquid scintillation neutrino detector (such as KamLAND) and LBNE (LAr-based) to low-mass dark matter with long-range interactions and compare this to the expected CDMS sensitivity. We propose the liquid-scintillator detector LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) as a next-generation neutrino observatory on the scale of 50 kt. The outstanding successes of the Borexino and KamLAND experiments demonstrate the large potential of liquid-scintillator detectors in low-energy neutrino physics. LENA's physics objectives comprise the observation of astrophysical and terrestrial neutrino sources as well as the investigation of neutrino oscillations. In the GeV energy range, the search for proton decay and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments complement the low-energy program. We consider the prospects for liquid scintillation experiments (with a focus on KamLAND) to detect the flux of electron neutrinos arising from dark matter annihilation in the core of the sun. We show that, with data already taken, KamLAND can provide the greatest sensitivity to the dark matter-proton spin-dependent scattering cross-section for dark matter lighter than 20 GeV. It is also possible to probe the dark matter-nucleon spin-independent scattering cross-section for isospin-violating dark matter lighter than 10 GeV. We consider the prospects for the detection of relatively light dark matter through direct annihilation to neutrinos. We specifically focus on the detection possibilities of water Cherenkov and liquid scintillator neutrino detection devices. We find in particular that liquid scintillator detectors may potentially provide excellent detection prospects for dark matter in the 4-10 GeV mass range. These experiments can provide excellent corroborative checks of the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signal, but may yield results for low mass dark matter in any case. We identify important tests of the ratio of electron to muon neutrino events (and neutrino versus anti-neutrino events), which discriminate against background atmospheric neutrinos. In addition, the fraction of events which arise from muon neutrinos or anti-neutrinos ($R_{\mu}$ and $R_{\bar \mu}$) can potentially yield information about the branching fractions of hypothetical dark matter annihilations into different neutrino flavors. Large liquid scintillation detectors have been generally dedicated to low energy neutrino measurements, in the MeV energy region (as for example, KamLAND and Borexino). Herein we describe the potential employment of large detectors (>1 kiloton) for studies of higher energy neutrinos interactions, from the cosmic rays and as a long baseline neutrino detector. Generally when people have considered large new instruments such as Hanohano and LENA, they have abandoned the possibility of doing useful measurements with higher energy neutrino interactions since these produce enough light to illuminate every photomultiplier tube, and the scintillation light is isotropic. Here we take into account Fermat's principle, which tells us that indeed the first light to reach the PMTs will be on or near the lightcone, the "Fermat surface", and that directional track information is available. Moreover we have realized that particle type distinction is possible (quasi-elastic muons from electrons). In fact the resolution from a detector of comparable size to SuperKamiokande, may be better in both angle, energy and possibly particle type. This realization opens the doors to a number of applications. Moreover, this capability can be demonstrated with the use of (future) KamLAND detected events in the new long baseline neutrino beam from the Jaeri accelerator in Japan, due to start operations this year. Some of the most attractive possibilities for the future may be in using Hanohano as a movable long baseline detector in this same beam, the employment of LENA in Europe in future long baseline neutrino beams from CERN, and in the DUSEL underground laboratory at Homestake., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The science potential of a 10 kiloton deep-ocean liquid scintillation detector for ~1 MeV energy scale electron anti-neutrinos has been studied. Such an instrument, designed to be portable and function in the deep ocean (3-5 km) can make unique measurements of the anti-neutrinos from radioactive decays in the Earth'.s mantle. Ths information speaks to some of the most fundamental questions in geology about the origin of the Earth, plat e tectonics, the geomagnetic field and even somewhat indirectly to global warming. Measurements in multiple locations will strengthen the potential insights. On the particle physics side, we have identified a unique role in the study of anti-neutrinos from a nuclear power complex, at a range of 55-60 km off shore. Not only can precision measurements be made of most neutrino mixing parameters, including $\theta_{13}$ (depending on magnitude), but the neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined in a method not heretofore discussed, and one which does not rely upon matter effects. This detector is under active study on paper, in the laboratory, and at sea. The detection of electron anti-neutrinos from natural radioactivity in the earth has been a goal of neutrino researchers for about half a century. It was accomplished by the KamLAND Collaboration in 2005, and opens the way towards studies of the Earth's radioactive content, with very important implications for geology. New detectors are operating (KamLAND and Borexino), building (SNO+) and being proposed (Hanohano, LENA, Earth and others) that will go beyond the initial observation and allow interesting geophysical and geochemical research, in a means not otherwise possible. Herein we describe the approaches being taken (large liquid scintillation instruments), the experimental and technical challenges (optical detectors, directionality), and prospects for growth of this field. Despite the dramatic progress made in neutrino oscillation studies recently, several fundamental neutrino parameters remain either unknown or poorly measured. We discuss in detail a method for their measurement by precision studies of oscillation-caused neutrino energy spectrum distortions, for which a large underwater inverse beta decay detector appears to be a perfect tool. Results determine optimal baselines and necessary exposures in the presence of systematic uncertainties and the unavoidable background from terrestrial antineutrinos., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

We propose that a sufficiently advanced civilization may employ Cepheid variable stars as beacons to transmit all-call information throughout the galaxy and beyond. One can construct many scenarios wherein it would be desirable for such a civilization of star ticklers to transmit data to anyone else within viewing range. The beauty of employing Cepheids is that these stars can be seen from afar(we monitor them out through the Virgo cluster), and any developing technological society would seem to be likely to closely observe them as distance markers. Records exist of Cepheids for well over one hundred years. We propose that these (and other regularly variable types of stars) be searched for signs of phase modulation (in the regime of short pulse duration) and patterns, which could be indicative of intentional signaling., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We consider the prospects for testing the dark matter interpretation of the DAMA/LIBRA signal with the Super-Kamiokande experiment. The DAMA/LIBRA signal favors dark matter with low mass and high scattering cross section. We show that these characteristics imply that the scattering cross section that enters the DAMA/LIBRA event rate determines the annihilation rate probed by Super-Kamiokande. Current limits from Super-Kamiokande through-going events do not test the DAMA/LIBRA favored region. We show, however, that upcoming analyses including fully-contained events with sensitivity to dark matter masses from 5 to 10 GeV may corroborate the DAMA/LIBRA signal. We examine the possibility to employ neutrinos to communicate within the galaxy. We discuss various issues associated with transmission and reception, and suggest that the resonant neutrino energy near 6.3 PeV may be most appropriate. In one scheme we propose to make Z^o particles in an overtaking e^+ - e^- collider such that the resulting decay neutrinos are near the W^- resonance on electrons in the laboratory. Information is encoded via time structure of the beam. In another scheme we propose to use a 30 PeV pion accelerator to create neutrino or anti-neutrino beams. The latter encodes information via the particle/anti-particle content of the beam, as well as timing. Moreover, the latter beam requires far less power, and can be accomplished with presently foreseeable technology. Such signals from an advanced civilization, should they exist, will be eminently detectable in neutrino detectors now under construction., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. We describe a method for determining the hierarchy of the neutrino mass spectrum and theta_13 through remote detection of antineutrinos from a nuclear reactor. This method utilizing a single, 10-kt scintillating liquid detector at a distance of 50-64 kilometers from the reactor complex measures mass-squared differences involving nu_3 with a one (ten) year exposure provided sin2(2theta_13)>0.05 (0.02). Our technique applies the Fourier transform to the event rate as a function of neutrino flight distance over energy. Sweeping over a relevant range of delta-m2 resolves separate spectral peaks for delta-m2_31 and delta-m2_32. For normal (inverted) hierarchy the absolute value of delta-m2_31 is greater (lesser) than the absolute value of delta-m2_32. Neutrinos may be pseudo-Dirac states, such that each generation is actually composed of two maximally-mixed Majorana neutrinos separated by a tiny mass difference. The usual active neutrino oscillation phenomenology would be unaltered if the pseudo-Dirac splittings are $\delta m^2 \alt 10^{-12}$ eV$^2$; in addition, neutrinoless double beta decay would be highly suppressed. However, it may be possible to distinguish pseudo-Dirac from Dirac neutrinos using high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. By measuring flavor ratios as a function of $L/E$, mass-squared differences down to $\delta m^2 \sim 10^{-18}$ eV$^2$ can be reached. There is increasing observational evidence for the existence of strange stars: ultra-compact objects whose interior consists entirely of deconfined quark matter. If confirmed, their existence places constraints on the rate of formation of microscopic black holes in models which invoke a TeV-scale Planck mass. In such models, black holes can form with ~TeV masses through nuclear interactions of particles with PeV and greater energies. Once formed, these black hole states are unstable to Hawking radiation, and rapidly decay. However, if such a black hole forms in the interior of a strange star, the density is high enough that the decay may be counterbalanced by accretion, and the black hole can grow, leading to subsequent catastropic collapse of the star. A guaranteed source of ultra-high energy particles is provided by the cosmogenic Greisen neutrinos, as well as by ultra-high energy cosmic rays, and the implied lifetimes for strange stars are extremely short, contrary to observations. The observed lifetimes of strange star candidates thus effectively exclude Planck mass scales of less than ~2 TeV with comparable black hole masses, for up to 2 extra dimensions. Seeding of strange star collapse in scenarios with a larger number of extra-dimensions or with higher mass black holes remains a possibility, and may provide another channel for the origin of gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, revtex4 style

With the 1998 announcement of new evidence for muon neutrino disappearance observed by the Super-Kamiokande experiment, the more than a decade old atmospheric neutrino anomaly moved from a possible indication for neutrino oscillations to an almost inescapable implication. The evidence from all experiments is reviewed, and indications are presented that the oscillations are probably between muon and tau neutrinos with nearly maximal mixing. Cosmic ray interactions in the solar atmosphere yield a flux of electron and muon neutrinos with energies greater than 10 GeV. We show that the asymmetry in the neutral current events (e.g. Nu N -> Nu N pi^0) can be used to discriminate between Nu_mu - Nu_tau and Nu_mu - Nu_st mixing as being responsible for the atmospheric neutrino anomaly. Specifically, A_N vanishes for Nu_mu - Nu_tau mixing and is about 2/3 A_mu for Nu_mu - Nu_st mixing., Comment: 3pages, 1 figure

We propose a simple test of underground neutrino data to discriminate amongst neutrino oscillation models. It uses the asymmetry between downward-going events and upward-going events, for electron and muon events separately. Because of the symmetry of typical underground detectors, an asymmetry can be compared with calculations with little need for the intermediary of a simulation program. Furthermore, we show that the various oscillation scenarios give rise to dramatically differing trajectories of asymmetry versus energy for muons and electrons. After a brief discussion of a possible relationship between the electroweak phase transition in highly compressed matter and gravitational collapse, we examine the speculative possibility that the electroweak phase transition might be contemporarily occurring in processes in neutron stars. We conjecture that adiabatic compression of neutron star matter due to focusing of the energy from a supernova bounce into a very small volume could result in extreme densities, and Fermi levels or temperature above $\cal{O}$ (100 GeV). The neutrino deficits observed in four solar neutrino experiments, relative to the theoretical predictions, have led to fresh insights into neutrino and solar physics. Neutrino emission from distant, energetic astronomical systems may form the basis for a new field of astronomy. It is suggested that a large deep underocean (or ice) neutrino detector, given the presence of significant numbers of neutrinos in the PeV energy range as predicted by various models of Active Galactic Nuclei, can make unique measurements of the properties of neutrinos. It will be possible to observe the existence of the tau neutrino, measure its mixing with other flavors, in fact test the mixing pattern for all three flavors based upon the mixing parameters suggested by the atmospheric and solar neutrino data, and measure the tau neutrino cross section. The key signature is the charged current tau neutrino interaction, which produces a double cascade, one at either end of a lightly radiating track. At a few PeV these cascades would be separated by roughly 100 m, and thus be easily resolvable in next generation DUMAND-like detectors. First examples might be found in detectors presently under construction. Future applications are precise neutrino astronomy and earth tomography.
