Background: Nowadays Alzheimer's disease and its treatment methods are global concerns. Patients with this disease have poor prognosis and need supportive treatment. The antioxidant activity, anti-acetylcholinesterase (anti-AChE), anti-butyryl cholinesterase (anti-BChE) and Aβ-amyloid-42 inhibition activities of the ethanolic extracts of both leaves and flowers (LEE and FEE) of Markhamia lutea were assessed. The antioxidant activity of LEE and FEE was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate, oxygen radical absorbance capacity and ferrozine iron metal chelation assays. Additionally, their total flavonoids and total phenolics were determined. The phytochemicals of LEE were analysed using LC–MS/Q-TOF in both positive and negative modes. Also, molecular docking was done for phytochemicals identified in LEE. Result: LEE exhibited higher antioxidant and anti-Alzheimer activities in all techniques due to its high flavonoids content. LEE showed better activity than donepezil in case of anti-butyryl cholinesterase than both donepezil and rivastigmine in case of Aβ-amyloid-42 inhibition. A total of 62 compounds were tentatively identified using Ultra-performance Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC–ESI–TOF–MS), viz. 35 flavonoids, 11 phenolic acids, 2 terpenoids, 2 phenylpropanoids derivatives, 7 polyphenols, 3 coumarins and 2 organic acids. The molecular docking of some constituents showed that isorhamnetin-O-rutinoside, sissotrin, 3,5,7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyflavone (diosmetin), rosmarinic acid, kaempferol hexoside, kampferol-7-neohesperoside, acacetin, taxifolin and apigenin-O-hexoside exert a promising activity as anti-Alzheimer drugs. Conclusion: The LEE of Markhamia lutea contains secondary metabolites that is promising to act as natural antioxidants, acetylcholinesterase, butyryl cholinesterase and Aβ-amyloid-42 inhibition inhibitors, which can aid in the treatment of Alzheimer's. Background: Cymbopogon is a member of the family Poaceae and has been explored for its phytochemicals and bioactivities. Although the antimicrobial activities of Cymbopogon spp. extracts have been extensively studied, comprehensive analyses are required to identify promising compounds for the treatment of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, this study investigated the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of Cymbopogon spp. ethanolic extracts in every single organ. Methods: Ethanolic extracts were obtained from three Indonesian commercial species of Cymbopogon spp., namely Cymbopogon citratus (L.) Rendle, Cymbopogon nardus (DC.) Spatf., and Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt. The leaf, stem, and root extracts were evaluated via metabolite profiling using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). In silico and in vitro analyses were used to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the Cymbopogon spp. ethanolic extracts. In addition, bioactivity was measured using cytotoxicity assays. Antioxidant assays were performed using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis [3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) to determine toxicity to Huh7it-1 cells using a tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Finally, the antimicrobial activity of these extracts was evaluated against Candida albicans, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli using a well diffusion assay. Results: GC–MS analysis revealed 53 metabolites. Of these, 2,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)- phenol (27.87%), alpha-cadinol (26.76%), and 1,2-dimethoxy-4-(1-propenyl)-benzene (20.56%) were the predominant compounds. C. winterianus and C. nardus leaves exhibited the highest antioxidant activity against DPPH and ABTS, respectively. Contrastingly, the MTT assay showed low cytotoxicity. C. nardus leaf extract exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, whereas C. winterianus stem extract showed the highest activity against B. substilis. Furthermore, computational pathway analysis predicted that antimicrobial activity mechanisms were related to antioxidant activity. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that the leaves had strong antioxidant activity, whereas both the leaves and stems showed great antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, all Cymbopogon spp. ethanolic extracts showed low toxicity. Background: Ethiopia is recognized as one of the centers of origin for the diversity of many plant species, including medicinal plants. Throughout the country, a large proportion of the population relies on these therapeutic plant species for primary healthcare. While such traditional medicinal knowledge has been documented in some regions, there is a lack of information from the Quara district of northwestern Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to document the indigenous and local knowledge of the use of medicinal plants among three ethnic groups residing in the area. Methodology: An ethnobotanical study was conducted from August 2022 to October 2023 in ten kebeles of the Quara district. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field walks, and focus group discussions with 286 informants using snowball, purposive, and random sampling techniques. Quantitative analyses included Rahman's similarity index (RSI), informant consensus factor (ICF), and direct matrix ranking (DMR). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze basic ethnobotanical data. Results: A total of 128 medicinal plant species from 112 genera and 50 families were documented and used to treat 14 disease categories. There was a 28% overlap in medicinal plant knowledge among the three ethnic groups studied. Fabaceae was the most represented family with 22 species. Trees accounted for the majority of the documented plants (37.5%), and leaves were the most commonly used plant parts (23.1%). Oral administration (56.7%) of plant extracts was the primary mode of remedy preparation and use. The highest ICF value (0.93) was recorded for circulatory and blood-related disorders. The study identified nine plants and 39 therapeutic uses not previously reported in Ethiopia. The RSI showed high overlap with neighboring areas and low similarity with distant areas. Top-ranked multipurpose plants were Ziziphus spina-christi and Terminalia leiocarpa, with agricultural expansion and fuelwood collection identified as major threats. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate the rich diversity of medicinal plants and associated traditional knowledge in the Quara district. The high ethnobotanical indices warrant further phytochemical and pharmacological investigations. Background: Although synthetic preservatives and antioxidants may have high antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, they are usually associated with adverse effects on human health. Currently, there is a growing interest in natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of two medicinal plant extracts and one active compound. Olive leaf extracts (0.2, 0.3, and 0.4% w/v), oleuropein (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6% w/v), thyme oil (0.1%), and oleuropein in combination with thyme oil (0.4% w/v and 0.1% v/v) were used against three bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus) and two fungal strains (Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger). Results: The use of oleuropein resulted in complete antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. In this context, a reduction of 7 logs was achieved during the storage period (4 weeks). Oleuropein showed no fungal activity at low concentrations (0.2%), but Aspergillus niger was reduced by 2.35 logs at higher concentrations (0.6% w/v). Similar antibacterial and antifungal properties were observed for the olive leaf extracts. Oleuropein at a concentration of 0.4 w/v and a mixture of oleuropein and thyme at concentrations of 0.4 and 0.1 (v/v) showed strong antimicrobial activity against the studied microorganisms. Conclusion: Olive leaf extract, thyme oil, and oleuropein have strong antibacterial and weak antifungal properties. There was a good synergistic effect between oleuropein and thymol. Introduction: Plants respond to water stress with a variety of physiological and biochemical changes, but their response varies among species, varieties and cultivars. Waterlogging in tomato reduces plant growth, degrade chlorophyll and increase concentration of oxidative parameters. Priming can alleviate stress in plants caused by waterlogging enabling plants to be more tolerant to an additional stress in the current or even subsequent generation. The aim of this study was to evaluate tomato genotypes for their sensitivity to waterlogging stress applied during early vegetative growth and at full flowering stage. Materials and methods: The study included two local genotypes, Trebinjski sitni (GB1126) and Žuti (GB1129), and the reference variety Novosadski jabučar (NJ), which is the variety most commonly used in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The activity of class III peroxidase (POX), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were measured spectrophotometrically, and for quantification of individual phenolic compounds, targeted approach was adopted, using UHPLC/DAD/(-)HESI-MS² instrument (Dionex UltiMate 3000 UHPLC system with a DAD detector, configured with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer TSQ Quantum Access Max (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Germany)). Results and discussion: Oxidative parameters (H2O2 and MDA) exhibited an increase in content in leaves of tomato plants that underwent waterlogging stress compared to control plants. Moreover, oxidative parameters showed positive correlation with proteins and phenolics content. The obtained correlations can indicate that one of the response strategies of tomato plants to waterlogging is the increased synthesis of proteins and phenolic compounds. The POX activity was not correlated with other parameters except with the polyphenols. A positive correlation was shown between POX activity and the content of phenolic compounds, indicating their independent roles in the removal of ROS. Changes in the phenolic profiles after the exposure of plants to waterlogging stress are recorded, and these changes were more severe in leaves and fruits of GB1129 and NJ genotypes than in GB1126. Thus, genotype GB1126 is the most efficient in maintaining the phenolic profiles of leaves and fruits, and therefore of the nutritive and organoleptic qualities of fruits following the exposure to waterlogging. Also, genotype GB1126 exhibited the ability to maintain the content of oxidative parameters during waterlogging at certain growth stages, implying certain waterlogging tolerance. Conclusion: Waterlogging triggered stress memory but not at all growth stages. The most pronounced stress memory was obtained in fruit samples in the phase of full fruit maturity on the 1st truss. This study shed light on the defense mechanisms of tomato plants to repeated waterlogging stress from the perspectives of the changes in the composition of major phenolics, and pointed to the 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid and rutin as the chemical markers of the waterlogging stress tolerance in tomato. However, it remains to be determined whether this modulation has a positive or negative effect on the overall plant metabolism. This study delved into the incorporation of wild nettle (Urtica dioica L.) leaves powder with virgin olive oil, exploring its potential to enhance nutritional value and health benefits. The antioxidant, antibacterial, and mineral-enrichment attributes of the resultant nettle-infused olive oil were investigated. Phenolic composition analysis revealed that an optimal maceration time of 30–40 minutes leads to maximal phenolic and flavonoid contents (57.66 mg GAE/100 g and 67.18 mg QE/100 g, respectively). The infused oil demonstrated superior radical scavenging activity (DPPH and ABTS assays) compared to virgin olive oil. Notably, nettle infusion significantly elevates zinc (10.12 mg/kg) and iron (13.85 mg/kg) contents. Antibacterial assays exhibited enhanced inhibition diameters and lower MIC and MBC values for nettle-infused oil against various bacterial strains. The study's findings underscore the potential of nettle infusion to enhance the nutritional and functional attributes of olive oil, holding promise for novel culinary and health applications. Four new tirucallane-type triterpenoids, polystanins H–K (1–4), were obtained from the stems and leaves of Aphanamixis polystachya. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of the spectroscopic data and comparison with literature data. Compounds 1 and 2 showed week inhibitory effects against NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. A sensitive UPLC-HRMS method was developed and validated for simultaneous quantification of four active flavonoids from Chimonanthus nitens Leaf Granules (CNLG) in biological matrix. The method was utilized in pharmacokinetic study of the four flavonoids in rats as well as other evaluation assays in vitro. It was revealed that rutin, nicotiflorin, and astragalin had poor oral bioavailability in rats possibly due to low intestinal permeability and metabolism in intestinal flora. Kaempferol underwent rapid glucuronidation and sulphation in rat plasma with medium permeability coefficient. Nematodes typically comprise the most abundant phylum in meiofaunal communities. We aim to characterize the specific ecological conditions that influence Nematoda communities in Posidonia oceanica grasslands focusing on three habitats: leaves, matte, and unvegetated adjacent sediment. We hypothesized that the constant flux of nutrients under the canopy would result in a higher concentration of metazoans compared to the unvegetated sediment outside; however, the hypothesis was not confirmed by the obtained results. The habitat heterogeneity played an important role in shaping the community, yielding a greater richness in the matte. The resource specificity of the leaves (microepiphytes) was also expected to shape the community by favoring nematodes capable of exploiting this resource (epistratum feeders with scraping-like structures), such as the family Chromadoridae that dominated this habitat. In addition, the high light exposure of the leaves explains the higher concentration of ocellated nematodes in this habitat. Organic carbon and nitrogen contents had an impact on the Nematoda community composition, meanwhile average grain size only affected the abundance of nematodes with elongated/filiform tails. Iris pallida LAM., which has characterized the economy of small and medium-sized Tuscan farms for decades, is one of the most typical rustic species of the Mediterranean landscape. I. pallida essence is widely used in the perfumery sector for the indicative smell of violet caused by its high content of irones, ketone compounds accumulated inside the rhizome during their storage phase. One of the main critical aspects of its cultivation is the vegetative propagation method, traditionally carried out by rhizome transplanting, which does not allow obtaining a sufficient number of plants to encourage its cultivation. The state of the art indicates the micropropagation of I. pallida via somatic embryogenesis as the most effective propagation method, using immature flower components as starting tissue; however, there are no studies aimed at comparing the responses of different ecotypes of I. pallida to this technique. In this study, I. pallida clones of HE, VIC and BA ecotypes were obtained via somatic embryogenesis, starting from bud (young and immature) and leaf explants, monitoring all the development steps from callus to plantlets production, and testing clones adaptation to field conditions, using a modified acclimatization protocol. The results highlighted the different responses of the ecotypes to the in vitro protocol and demonstrated the effectiveness of somatic embryogenesis in producing I. pallida plantlets with a chromatographic profile overlapping with the donor plant; this alternative propagation method could allow to produce plantlets without sacrificing sealable rhizome. The objective of this study was to optimise the chromosome preparation technique by examining the impact of various factors on the quality of chromosome slices obtained from Newhall navel orange leaves. The wall removing hypotonic flame drying method was employed, and factors including leaf parts, developmental period, pretreatment time, enzyme ratio, and enzyme treatment duration were examined. Our findings revealed that the use of the apices of leaves from stage II, pretreated with 0.002 mol/L 8-hydroxyquinoline for 3 hours at room temperature, followed by enzymatic digestion in a mixture of 5% cellulase and 0.3% pectinase for 3 hours at 37 °C, provided the optimal conditions for chromosome preparation. This optimised protocol allowed for clear visualisation of morphological characteristics, establishing a reliable and efficient method for chromosome preparation in Newhall navel oranges. AbstractOur study described in this paper sought to show that the fibers of the midrib of the leaves of cavendish variety banana plants from Cameroon can be extracted by boiling water and to compare their properties (chemical, physical, thermal, and mechanical) with those obtained by cold water extraction. The standard tests for the various characterizations were respected. This study showed that the fibers extracted with boiling water contained 64.3% cellulose, 18.1% hemicellulose, 4.5% lignin, and 12.9% pectin, while the fibers extracted by the cold water technique contained 65% cellulose, 19% hemicellulose, 5% lignin, and 11% pectin. The extraction of fibers by the boiling water technique gave a 9.35% extraction yield, 0.94 g.cm−3 density, 15.23 tex linear mass, 11.10% water content, 169.78% water absorption degree, and 36.02% humidity at a relative humidity of 75%, while the fibers extracted by the cold water technique had a 12.35% extraction yield, 0.91 g.cm−3 density, 14.23 tex linear mass, 10.73% water content, 102.4% water absorption degree, and 34.45% humidity at a relative humidity of 75%. The boiling water extracted fibers had a thermal stability temperature of 268.5 °C. The student’s t-test showed that the fibers obtained by the boiling water extraction technique and the cold water extraction technique had identical mechanical properties. Thus, we suggest that the fibers of the midrib of the leaves of banana plants can be extracted with boiling water and used in textiles and composite materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Understanding how Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) evolves over time is crucial for fostering social and environmental responsibility. This study aims to develop a conceptual model of plant knowledge circulation, providing insights into the temporal dynamics of LEK in the Polish-Lithuanian-Belarusian border region. It explores the key patterns and driving forces behind changes in the use of wild plants for food. Methods: Field research was conducted in 60 rural settlements across Podlasie Voivodeship (Poland), Vilnius Region (Lithuania), and Hrodna Region (Belarus). This included 200 semi-structured interviews and participant observation among two local communities, Lithuanians and Poles. To assess the temporal dynamics of wild food use, we performed a cross-ethnic, cross-border analysis over time, dividing the data into three major temporal dimensions: past, continuous, and recently acquired uses. Results: Of the 72 wild plant taxa reported by Poles or Lithuanians in the Polish-Lithuanian-Belarusian borderland, 47 were continuously used for food, 58 were utilised in the past, and 41 were recently acquired. Cross-country trends were similar, with Poland showing more past uses. Diachronic comparisons between Poles and Lithuanians in each studied country revealed no significant differences. Recently acquired taxa overlapped considerably with those used continuously and in the past. The most diversely utilised taxa showed the greatest overlaps. By observing the movement of specific plant taxa within various time dimensions, we distinguished overlapping flow variations: retention (3 taxa), decay (11), invention (8), stagnation (17), revitalisation (6), re-invention (3), and knowledge in motion (24). Shifts in the use of wild food plants were influenced by changes in environmental conditions, governmental policies, cultural practices, and economic factors. Conclusion: The findings of this study have important implications for improving methods of tracking changes in LEK and enhancing our understanding of the relationship between people and nature. Our results underscore the importance of considering knowledge circulation over time in different directions. Propolis is a complex mixture formed from exudates that bees collect from plants and then mix with beeswax and their own salivary enzymes. Chilean propolis is characterized by the presence of phenolic compounds, which are considered responsible for the biological activities. The endemic species Escallonia pulverulenta (Ruiz and Pav.) Pers. [Escalloniaceae] is a recognized source of exudate to produce propolis. This study reports for the first time the chemical profile and antibacterial activity of E. pulverulenta exudate and leaves, as well as two samples of Chilean propolis. Palynological and morphological analysis showed the presence of E. pulverulenta as one of the main species in the propolis samples. UPLC-MS/MS analyses enabled the identification of phenolic acids in the leaves and in the propolis. Conversely, flavonoids are mainly present in exudates and propolis. Quercetin is the most abundant flavonol in the exudate, with similar concentrations in the propolis samples. Nevertheless, the main compound present in both samples of propolis was the flavanone pinocembrin. The antibacterial results obtained for exudate and propolis have shown a similar behavior, especially in the inhibition of Streptococcus pyogenes. Essential oil (EO) extraction is a widespread practice generating huge amounts of solid plant by-products a potential source of bioactive compounds, on the one hand, and a detrimental risk for the environment that needs to be carefully considered on the other hand. The present study aims to valorize Myrtus communis L. leaf by-products obtained following EO extraction using a steam distillation unit through the recovery of phenolic compounds and the evaluation of their biological activities. The total phenols, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins contents of the ethanolic extract by-product were higher than the control (leaves without extraction of EO). Their amounts increased from 69.30 to 88.06 mg GAE/g for total phenols, from 36.31 to 70.97 mg QE for flavonoids and from 19.74 to 21.49 mg CE/g of extract for proanthocyanidins. The identification of phenolic compounds by high-performance liquid-chromatography equipped with a reversed-phase (RP-HPLC) system revealed that the by-product sample includes more gallic acid, catechin, syringic acid and luteolin 7-O-glucoside but less p-coumaric acid and kaempferol than the control. Moreover, the mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) showed the presence of benzene ring characteristic of phenolic compounds at 756 cm−1, esters of aromatic acids and stretching vibrations of polyphenols at 1141–1234 cm−1, C=C stretching present in phenolic acids such as coumaric acid and catechin at 1604 cm−1. The assessment of antioxidant activity revealed that the ABTS+• radical scavenging activity was significantly increased, whereas the DPPH• radical inhibition activity and the ferric reduction antioxidant power were significantly decreased. The results indicated, as well, that Myrtus communis L. leaf by-products maintained a considerable antibacterial activity depending on the tested bacterial strain. Additionally, the anti-α-amylase activity was higher for the Myrtus communis L. leaf by-product extract. Therefore, Myrtus communis L. leaf by-products of EO extraction offer phenolic compounds with significant biological activities, contributing to the sustainable development and the promotion of circular economy by the recovery of valuable inputs from plant by-products. Background: The leaves of Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers. (K. pinnata), a succulent plant native to tropical regions, are used as a medicinal alternative against cancer in several countries worldwide; however, its therapeutic potential to fight cancer has been little addressed. In this study, we analyzed the phytochemical content, antioxidant capacity, and selectivity of K. pinnata leaf ethanolic extract against different human cancer cell lines in vitro. Methodology: This study subjected the ethanolic extract to enzymatic assays to quantify the phytochemical content (phenolics, flavonoids, and anthraquinones) and its radical scavenging and iron-reducing capacities. Also, the phytoconstituents and major phenolic compounds present in the extract's subfractions were identified by GC-MS, HPLC, and NMR. Human cancer (MCF-7, PC-3, HT-29) and normal colon (CoN) cell lines were treated with different concentrations of K. pinnata leaf ethanolic extract, and the changes in cell proliferation (sulforhodamine B assay), caspases activity (FITC-VAD-FMK reporter), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP, rhodamine 123 assay), chromatin condensation/fragmentation (Hoechst 33342 stain), and ROS generation (DCFH2 probe assay) were assessed. Results: The results showed that the K. pinnata leaf ethanolic extract is rich in phytoconstituents with therapeutic potential, including phenols (quercetin and kaempferol), flavonoids, fatty acid esters (34.6% of the total composition), 1- triacontanol and sterols (ergosterol and stigmasterol, 15.4% of the total composition); however, it presents a poor content of antioxidant molecules (IC50 = 27.6 mg/mL for H2O2 scavenging activity vs. 2.86 mg/mL in the case of Trolox). Notably, the extract inhibited cell proliferation and reduced MMP in all human cell lines tested but showed selectivity for HT-29 colon cancer cells compared to CoN normal cells (SI = 8.4). Furthermore, ROS generation, caspase activity, and chromatin condensation/fragmentation were augmented significantly in cancer-derived cell lines, indicating a selective cytotoxic effect. Conclusion: These findings reveal that the K. pinnata leaf ethanolic extract contains several bioactive molecules with therapeutic potential, capable of displaying selective cytotoxicity in different human cancer cell lines. Background: Malaria continues to wreak havoc on the well-being of the community. Resistant parasites are jeopardizing the treatment. This is a wake-up call for better medications. Folk plants are the key starting point for antimalarial drug discovery. After crushing and mixing the leaves of Coriandrum sativum with water, one cup of tea is drunk daily for a duration of three to five days as a remedy for malaria by local folks in Ethiopia. Additionally, in vitro experiments conducted on the plant leaf extract elsewhere have also demonstrated the plant's malaria parasite inhibitory effect. There has been no pharmacologic research to assert this endowment in animals, though. This experiment was aimed at evaluating the antimalarial efficacy of C. sativum in Plasmodium berghei infected mice. Methods: The plant's leaf was extracted using maceration with distilled water. The extract was examined for potential acute toxicity. An evaluation of secondary phytoconstituents was done. Standard antimalarial screening models (prophylactic, chemosuppressive, curative tests) were utilized to assess the antiplasmodial effect. In each test, thirty mice were organized into groups of five. To the three categories, the test substance was given at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg/day before or after the commencement of P. berghei infection. Positive and negative control mice were provided Chloroquine and distilled water, respectively. Rectal temperature, parasitemia, body weight, survival time and packed cell volume were ultimately assessed. Analysis of the data was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Results: No toxicity was manifested in mice. The extract demonstrated a significant inhibition of parasitemia (p < 0.05) in all the models. The inhibition of parasite load was highest with the upper dose in the suppressive test (82.74%) followed by the curative procedure (78.49%). Likewise, inhibition of hypothermia, weight loss hampering, improved survival and protection against hemolysis were elicited by the extract. Conclusions: The results of our experimental study revealed that the aqueous crude leaf extract of C. sativum exhibits significant antimalarial efficacy in multiple in vivo models involving mice infected with P. berghei. Premise: Most traits are polygenic and most genes are pleiotropic, resulting in complex, integrated phenotypes. Polyploidy presents an excellent opportunity to explore the evolution of phenotypic integration as entire genomes are duplicated, allowing for new associations among traits and potentially leading to enhanced or reduced phenotypic integration. Despite the multivariate nature of phenotypic evolution, studies often rely on simplistic bivariate correlations that cannot accurately represent complex phenotypes or data reduction techniques that can obscure specific trait relationships. Methods: We apply network modeling, a common gene co‐expression analysis, to the study of phenotypic integration to identify multivariate patterns of phenotypic evolution, including anatomy and morphology (structural) and physiology (functional) traits in response to whole genome duplication in the genus Brassica. Results: We identify four key structural traits that are overrepresented in the evolution of phenotypic integration. Seeding networks with key traits allowed us to identify structure–function relationships not apparent from bivariate analyses. In general, allopolyploids exhibited larger, more robust networks indicative of increased phenotypic integration compared to diploids. Discussion: Phenotypic network analysis may provide important insights into the effects of selection on non‐target traits, even when they lack direct correlations with the target traits. Background: The emergence of the multidrug-resistant bacteria strain has become a global world crisis. This study was designed to evaluate the antibiofilm and synergistic effects of Lippia multiflora leaf extracts on the activity of cefotaxime against the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Methods: The synergistic effect of methanol and dichloromethane extracts on the bactericidal activity of cefotaxime was determined by using the antibiotic susceptibility test on agar medium. The antibiofilm activity of the extracts was measured by using the crystal violet method. The antioxidant potential of the extracts was assessed by using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Ferric Reduction Activity Potential (FRAP) methods. The main secondary metabolites groups were analyzed by using different standard analytical tests. The total phenolics and total flavonoids were quantified spectrophotometrically. Results: The methanol extract (final concentration of 100 µg/ml) inhibited the formation of bacterial biofilm more than salicylic acid (p<0.05). All extracts combined with cefotaxime (20 µg and 200 µg) showed good synergistic bactericidal effect on S. aureus with inhibitory diameters of up to 40 mm. The methanol extract showed higher total phenolics (462.20±10.90 mg EAG/g) and total flavonoids (26.20±0.20 mg EQ/g) contents than the dichloromethane extract (96.70±1.70 mg EAG/g and 8.00±1.20 mg EQ/g). Moreover, the methanol extract showed a higher FRAP reducing power (353.6± 4.17 mmol EQ/g) than the dichloromethane extract (385.3±7.01 mmol EQ/g). Qualitative phytochemical analysis showed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, terpenes and sterols in both extracts. Background: Unlike plant phytochemicals, little has been done to explore the metabolites from phyllosphere bacterial flora, some of which enabled them to survive interspecific competition through amensalism. This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of metabolites from Phyllospheric Bacteria (PB) isolated from Funtumia elastica (FE), against selected bacterial and fungal pathogens. Phenotypic and molecular methods were used to identify the isolated phyllo-microbiota. Methods: The PB were aseptically isolated by sonication. Their metabolites were obtained from the fresh overnight culture of the organisms. The cell-free supernatants containing the metabolites were used for antimicrobial assays against the pathogens. The DNA of the bacterial isolates were isolated using a NIMR-BIOTECH DNA extraction kit, while their 16S rRNA was amplified with the primer: 799F 5'-AACACGGATTA GATACC-3', 1193R 5'- ACGTCATCCCCACCTTCC-3', using SolisFast* Master Mix, (Solis Biodyne-Estonia). The BLAST of the sequence was done from the NCBI Genbank. The PB strains identified were submitted to NCBI and accession numbers were assigned to them. Results: The phyllosphere of FE yielded 21 bacterial isolates: 7 Gram-positives and 14 Gram-negatives. The metabolites from these isolates showed varying degrees of bioactivity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC29213), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 35659); Trychophyton rubrum, Candida albicans and Microsporum canis. Fifteen bioactive isolates sequenced yielded four genera, Enterobacter (E. hormaechei 98.44%), Bacillus (B. cereus 100%), Pontoea (P. dispersa 99.72%), Staphylococcus (S. arlettae 99.72%). • Guava leaf extract (GLE) enhanced muscle strength in muscle atrophy (MA) mice. • GLE normalized abnormal morphological changes in MA mice. • GLE attenuated muscle proteolysis via ubiquitin proteasome system in MA mice. • GLE reduced excessive autophagy and apoptosis, which triggers skeletal muscle damage in MA mice. Muscle atrophy is the waste or loss of muscle mass and is caused by physical inactivity, aging, or diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart failure. The number of patients suffering from musculoskeletal disorders is expected to increase in the future. However, intervention for muscle atrophy is limited, so research on treatment for muscle wasting is needed. This study hypothesized that guava leaf (Psidium guajava L. [GL]) would have ameliorative effects on muscle atrophy by regulation of protein degradation pathways in a dexamethasone (DEX)-induced muscle atrophy mice model. Muscle atrophy was induced by DEX injection for 28 days in 7 week-old-male ICR mice. Then, low-dose GL (LGL, 200 mg/kg) or high-dose GL (HGL, 500 mg/kg) extract (GLE) was supplemented by oral gavage for 21 days. Muscle strength, calf thickness, and body composition were analyzed. Histopathological changes in the gastrocnemius muscle were examined using hematoxylin and eosin staining, and molecular pathways related to muscle degradation were analyzed by western blots. GLE treatment regardless of dose increased muscle strength in mice with muscle atrophy accompanied by attenuating autophagy related pathway in the DEX-induced muscle atrophy mice. Moreover, a high dose of GLE treatment ameliorated ubiquitin proteasome system and apoptosis in the DEX-induced muscle atrophy mice. This study suggested that GLE could be helpful to improve muscle health and alleviate proteolysis by regulation of the ubiquitin–proteasome system, autophagy, and apoptosis, which are involved in muscle degradation. In conclusion, GLE could be a potential nutraceutical to prevent muscle atrophy. GLE contains many types of polyphenols such as gallic acid, epicatechin, quercetin, caffeic acid, and others. GLE supplementation attenuated muscle loss and enhanced muscle strength by inhibition of UPS-mediated muscle degradation, mTOR-related autophagy, and apoptosis pathway in DEX-induced muscle atrophy mice. Background and aims: Home-field advantage (HFA) in litter decomposition occurs widely in terrestrial ecosystems, but it remains unknown that how leaf, absorptive and transport roots differ in their HFA. Here we conducted a 635-day litter transplant (leaves, absorptive roots, and transport roots) decomposition experiment, using three tree species (Cyclobalanopsis multinervis, Fagus lucida, Cryptomeria japonica), in a subtropical forest to explore their differences in HFA effects. Results: The mass loss of leaves was higher than that of absorptive and transport roots. The mass loss of fine roots differed among species. Leaves were more prone to exhibit significant HFA compared to absorptive and transport roots, and absorptive roots were more prone to exhibit significant HFA compared to transport roots. The HFA effect was not explained by the initial chemical characteristics of litter except C concentration. Conclusions: These findings suggest that HFA effect can occur in labile and recalcitrant litters and are generally not regulated by the initial chemical characteristics. Absorptive and transport roots exhibit different HFA patterns, highlighting the need to identify the effects of HFA on root decomposition by functional classification rather than diameter class to gain a better understanding of fine root decomposition. The phytochemical compounds in the leaf extracts of Castanopsis indica and C. tribuloides were evaluated, and their antioxidant and antimicrobial potential were assessed. The TPC was found to be 193.12 and 159.49 mg GAE g−1 dry weight, and the TFC was 108.12 and 96.49 mg QE g−1 dry weight, for C. indica and C. tribuloides, respectively. C. indica had higher DPPH scavenging activity, with an IC50 value of 15.10 μg mL−1. Both extracts showed substantial antimicrobial activity against the tested bacteria. The phytochemical constituents in Priva cordifolia leaf extracts and their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas sp. were determined along with antioxidant property. HepG2 cells were used to test the hepatoprotective and cytoprotective effects of P. cordifolia leaf extracts by evaluating the levels of liver enzymes AST and ALT. The inhibitory zone against E. coli and Pseudomonas sp. by the ethanolic extract was effective than the aqueous extract. Eucalyptus leaves were extracted by two methods: Soxhlet extraction using different solvents and ratios, and by soaking in ethanol. The 60% ethanol extract furnished 29.9% and 44.4% inhibition of Anti-Glycation End products at 120 and 300 ppm concentrations, respectively. All extracts displayed notable antioxidant activity (FRAP). The 60% ethanol and soaked samples had the highest total phenolic content, whereas the ethyl acetate extract had the highest total flavonoids and alkaloids. Extracts displayed higher antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) than Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Mushrooms can be considered as an ecological bioconversion tools to recycle agricultural and agro-industrial wastes. Hence, the objective of this paper was to evaluate the biodegradability potentials of Pleurotus ostreatus (jacq) P. Kumm cultivated on solid wastes supplemented with medicinal plant leaves using standard chemical and biological methods. The yield and biological efficiency of P. ostreatus revealed that oil palm fibre supplemented with M. oleifera had highest (124) and (82.66 %) while P. ostreatus cultivated on rags had least (66) and (44.00 %). Degradation of lignin had highest (67.77 %) at (spawn run) in P. ostreatus cultivated on rags, while cellulose and hemicellulose had highest (28.58 % and 33.01%) in P. ostreatus cultivated on plantain peels supplemented with M. oleifera and pampers supplemented with C. citratus respectively. Percent carbon content of rags had highest (43.34 %, 39.12 %, 35.76 % and 27.29 %) at first day, spawn run, fructification and spent compost (at harvest) respectively. The nitrogen content increases as the growth phase progresses, plantain peels supplemented with M. oliefera had highest (2.41 %, 2.83 %, 2.95 % and 3.01 %) and least of (0.21 %, 0.40 %, 0.73 % and 1.21 %) occurred on pampers supplemented with M. oliefera at first day, spawn run, fructification and spent compost (at harvest) respectively. Cultivation of P. ostreatus on solid wastes supplemented with medicinal plant leaves can be a good means of waste management and production of mushroom rich in nutraceutical properties. Stoichiometric homeostasis is an important mechanism in maintaining ecosystem structure, function, and stability. Phyllostachys edulis (moso bamboo) is a typical clone plant, forming pure bamboo forests or bamboo–wood mixed forests by expanding rhizomes around. Studying the stoichiometric homeostasis characteristics of moso bamboo at different ages after expansion contributes to a deeper understanding of the stability of bamboo forest ecosystems, and is of great significance for expanding the research scope of ecological stoichiometry. Based on the stoichiometric internal stability theory, the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) elements in the soil and plants of typical moso bamboo forests in Tianbaoyan National Nature Reserve of Fujian Province were determined, and the internal stability index (H) of bamboo leaves of different ages (I-du, II-du, III-du, and IV-du bamboos) was calculated. The results showed that the dependence of moso bamboo on soil nutrients and the ability of moso bamboo to regulate nutrient elements were both significantly affected by the plant's age. Under the condition of the same soil nutrients (N, P), the content of N and P in bamboo leaves decreased significantly with the increase in bamboo age. The limiting effect of phosphorus on the growth and development of moso bamboo was greater than that of nitrogen, and the limiting effect of phosphorus on aged bamboo was greater than that of young bamboo. The stoichiometric internal stability index of N and P in bamboo leaves is HN:P > HN > HP, which means that the internal stability of moso bamboo is closely related to the limiting elements. Therefore, the regulation ability of the internal stability of moso bamboo of different ages makes it grow well in the changeable environment, has stronger adaptability and competitiveness, and the leaf internal stability of I-du bamboo was higher than that of other ages, which may be one of the reasons for its successful expansion to form a stable bamboo stand structure. The unique ecological environment of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau has endowed Chinese sea buckthorn leaves with rich bioactivities. In this study, we investigated the bioactivity and stress resistance mechanisms of flavonoids derived from Chinese sea buckthorn leaves (FCL) native to the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Our analysis identified a total of 57 flavonoids, mainly flavonol glycosides, from FCL, of which 6 were novel flavonoids. Isorhamnetin glycosides, quercetin glycosides and kaempferol glycosides were the three most dominant classes of compounds in FCL. In particular, isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside emerged as the most abundant compound. Our results showed that FCL possesses potent antioxidant properties, as evidenced by its ability to effectively scavenge DPPH free radicals and demonstrate ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) levels comparable to Trolox, a well-known antioxidant standard. Furthermore, FCL showed remarkable efficacy in reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels while enhancing the activities of key antioxidant enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), in Caenorhabditis elegans, a widely used model organism. Mechanistically, we elucidated that FCL exerts its stress resistance effects by modulating of transcription factors DAF-16 and HSF-1 within the insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling pathway (IIS). Activation of these transcription factors orchestrates the expression of downstream target genes including sod-3, ctl-1, hsp16.2, and hsp12.6, thus enhancing the organism's ability to cope with stressors. Overall, our study highlights the rich reservoir of flavonoids in Chinese sea buckthorn leaves as promising candidates for natural medicines, due to their robust antioxidant properties and ability to enhance stress resistance. This paper explores a novel method for creating an ultra-low adhesion leaf layer on a rail using a full-scale wheel/rail rig. Ultra-low adhesion layers were generated using leaf powder for the first time on a linear full-scale rig. The layers are compared chemically and physically to other layers from the laboratory and field. Background: The plant-specific YABBY transcription factor family plays important roles in plant growth and development, particularly leaf growth, floral organ formation, and secondary metabolite synthesis. Results: Here, we identified a total of 13 OfYABBY genes from the Osmanthus fragrans genome. These 13 OfYABBY genes were divided into five subfamilies through phylogenetic analysis, and genes in the same subfamily showed similar gene structures and conserved protein motifs. Gene duplication promoted the expansion of the OfYABBY family in O. fragrans. Tissue-specific expression analysis showed that the OfYABBY family was mainly expressed in O. fragrans leaves and floral organs. To better understand the role of OfYABBY genes in plant growth and development, OfYABBY12 was selected for heterologous stable overexpression in tobacco, and OfYABBY12-overexpressing tobacco leaves released significantly fewer volatile organic compounds than wild-type tobacco leaves. Overexpression of OfYABBY12 led to the downregulation of NtCCD1/4 and decreased β-ionone biosynthesis. Correspondingly, a dual-luciferase assay showed that OfYABBY12 negatively regulated the expression of OfCCD4, which promotes β-ionone synthesis. Furthermore, tobacco leaves overexpressing OfYABBY12 were curled and wrinkled and had significantly reduced leaf thickness and leaf inclusions and significantly extended flower pistils (styles). Conclusion: Overall, the results suggest that the OfYABBY gene family may influence the biosynthesis of the floral scent (especially β-ionone) in O. fragrans and may regulate leaf morphogenesis and lateral organs. Light availability and distribution play an important role in every ecosystem as these affect a variety of ecosystem processes and functions. To estimate light availability and distribution, light simulations can be used. Many previous models were based on highly simplified tree models and geometrical assumptions about tree form, or were sophisticated and computationally demanding models based on 3D data which had to be acquired in every season to be simulated. The aim of this study was to model the shadow cast by individual trees at high spatial and temporal resolution without the need for repeated data collection during multiple seasons. For our approach, we captured trees under leaf-off conditions using terrestrial laser scanning and simulated leaf-on conditions for individual trees over the remainder of the year. The model was validated against light measurements ( n = 20,436 ) collected using 60 quantum sensors underneath an apple tree (Malus domestica Borkh.) on a sunny and cloudless summer day. On this day, the leaves and the shadow were simulated with a high spatial (1 cm) and temporal resolution (1 min). The simulated values were highly correlated with the measured radiation at r = 0.84 . Additionally, we simulated the radiation for a whole year for the sample apple tree (tree height: 6.6 m, crown width: 7.6 m) with a resolution of 10 cm and a temporal resolution of 10 min. Below the tree, an area of 49.55 m² is exposed to a radiation reduction of at least 10%, 17.74 m² to at least 20% and only 0.12 m² to at least 30%. The model could be further improved by incorporating branch growth, curved leaf surfaces, and gravity to take the weight of the foliage into account. Summary: Xylem conduits have lignified walls to resist crushing pressures. The thicker the double‐wall (T) relative to its diameter (D), the greater the implosion safety. Having safer conduits may incur higher costs and reduced flow, while having less resistant xylem may lead to catastrophic collapse under drought. Although recent studies have shown that conduit implosion commonly occurs in leaves, little is known about how leaf xylem scales T vs D to trade off safety, flow efficiency, mechanical support, and cost.We measured T and D in > 7000 conduits of 122 species to investigate how T vs D scaling varies across clades, habitats, growth forms, leaf, and vein sizes.As conduits become wider, their double‐cell walls become proportionally thinner, resulting in a negative allometry between T and D. That is, narrower conduits, which are usually subjected to more negative pressures, are proportionally safer than wider ones. Higher implosion safety (i.e. higher T/D ratios) was found in asterids, arid habitats, shrubs, small leaves, and minor veins.Despite the strong allometry, implosion safety does not clearly trade off with other measured leaf functions, suggesting that implosion safety at whole‐leaf level cannot be easily predicted solely by individual conduits' anatomy. Bursera fagaroides, popularly used in México, possesses bioactive lignans. These compounds are low in the bark, and its extraction endangers the life of the trees. The aim of the present investigation was to search for alternative sources of cytotoxic compounds in B. fagaroides prepared as leaves and in vitro callus cultures. The friable callus of B. fagaroides was established using a combination of plant growth regulators: 4 mgL−1 of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 1 mgL−1 Naphthaleneacetic Acid (NAA) and 1 mgL−1 Zeatin. The maximum cell growth was at day 28 with a specific growth rate of μ = 0.059 days−1 and duplication time td = 11.8 days. HPLC quantification of the dichloromethane callus biomass extract showed that Scopoletin, with a concentration of 10.7 µg g−1 dry weight, was the main compound inducible as a phytoalexin by the addition of high concentrations of 2,4-D, as well as by the absence of nutrients in the culture medium. In this same extract, the compounds γ-sitosterol and stigmasterol were also identified by GC-MS analysis. Open column chromatography was used to separate and identify yatein, acetyl podophyllotoxin and 7′,8′-dehydropodophyllotoxin in the leaves of the wild plant. Cytotoxic activity on four cancer cell lines was tested, with PC-3 prostate carcinoma (IC50 of 12.6 ± 4.6 µgmL−1) being the most sensitive to the wild-type plant extract and HeLa cervical carcinoma (IC50 of 72 ± 5 µgmL−1) being the most sensitive to the callus culture extract. In the past few decades, there has been a notable rise in the occurrence of several types of candidiasis. Candida albicans is the most common cause of superficial fungal infections in humans. In this study, plumieride, one of the major iridoids from Plumeria obtusa L. leaves, was isolated and investigated for its potential against Candida albicans (CA)-induced dermatitis in mice. qRT-PCR was done to assess the impact of plumieride on the expression of the major virulence genes of CA. Five groups (n = 7) of adult male BALB/c mice were categorized into: group I: non-infected mice; group II: mice infected intradermally with 107–108 CFU/mL of CA; group III: CA-infected mice treated with standard fluconazole (50 mg/kg bwt.); group IV and V: CA-infected mice treated with plumieride (25- and 50 mg/kg. bwt., respectively). All the treatments were subcutaneously injected once a day for 3 days. Skin samples were collected on the 4th day post-inoculation to perform pathological, microbial, and molecular studies. The results of the in vitro study proved that plumieride has better antifungal activity than fluconazole, manifested by a wider zone of inhibition and a lower MIC. Plumieride also downregulated the expression of CA virulence genes (ALS1, Plb1, and Hyr1). CA-infected mice showed extensive dermatitis, confirmed by strong iNOS, TNF-α, IL-1β, and NF-κB genes or immune expressions. Whereas the treatment of CA-infected mice with plumieride significantly reduced the microscopic skin lesions and modulated the expression of all measured proinflammatory cytokines and inflammatory markers in a dose-dependent manner. Background: The historical use of Laurus nobilis L., the plant is native to the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for its aromatic leaves, which are used as a flavoring agent in cooking and for their potential therapeutic properties. Methods: The purpose of the current investigation was to characterize the essential oil composition of the fresh L. nobilis leaves from Palestine by using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), p-nitrophenyl butyrate, and 3,5-dinitro salicylic acid (DNSA) methods were employed to estimate the antioxidant, antiobesity, and antidiabetic effects of the essential oil. While MTS assay were used to evaluate their antiproliferative activities on panels of cell lines. Moreover, the docking studies were aided by the Prime MM GBSA method for estimating binding affinities. Results: The GC-MS investigation demonstrated that the fresh L. nobilis leaves essential oil has a variety of chemicals, about 31 different biochemicals were identified, and the major compounds were 1,8-cineole (48.54 ± 0.91%), terpinyl acetate (13.46 ± 0.34%), and α-terpinyl (3.84 ± 0.35%). Furthermore, the investigated oil demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against all tested bacterial and candidal strains and significantly inhibited the growth of MCF-7 cancerous cells more than the chemotherapeutic drug Doxorubicin. Furthermore, it contains robust DPPH free radicals, as well as porcine pancreatic α-amylase and lipase enzymes. Using the 1,8-cineole compound as the predominant biomolecule found in the L. nobilis essential oil, molecular docking studies were performed to confirm these observed fabulous results. The molecular docking simulations proposed that these recorded biological activities almost emanated from its high ability to form strong and effective hydrophobic interactions, this led to the getting of optimal fitting and interaction patterns within the binding sites of the applied crystallographic protein targets. Conclusion: The results of these experiments showed that the fresh L. nobilis leaves essential oil has outstanding pharmacological capabilities, making this oil a potential source of natural medications. Researchers often use trace element concentrations, including strontium–calcium ratios (Sr/Ca), to reconstruct paleodiets. While most commonly used as a proxy for meat consumption, a more appropriate application may be to differentiate frugivory from folivory. Sr/Ca ratios in animal tissue reflect the Sr/Ca ratios of the highest calcium components of that animal's diet. Because plants have much higher concentrations of calcium than meat, meat consumption signals are often overwhelmed by the variation in Sr/Ca ratios coming from different plant parts. This study uses faunal and plant data from Kibale National Park, a protected forest in southwestern Uganda home to numerous primate species (for example, common chimpanzees and baboons), to assess the reliability of Sr/Ca ratios to differentiate between primate dietary groups. We find that leaves consistently have higher strontium and calcium concentrations than fruits and that this is mirrored in higher Sr/Ca ratios in folivorous primates compared to frugivorous primates. Plant species differ widely in both their overall Sr/Ca ratios and the differences between their fruit and leaf Sr/Ca ratios, but this variation does not overwhelm the dietary signal separating frugivores and folivores. Furthermore, this research demonstrates that non-destructive and portable X-ray florescence (XRF) methods are an effective means of gathering Sr/Ca data from plant and faunal material, increasing the opportunities to apply such methods to fossil material in the future. Diospyros spp. is a tree or shrub species belonging to the family Ebenaceae. Researchers have not extensively conducted studies on the morphological characteristics of Diospyros spp. to examine their diversity or enhance information for taxonomic hierarchy purposes. Diospyros spp. in Indonesia has great potential for in-depth research due to its unique characteristics, particularly in Sulawesi. This research aims to fill the knowledge gap regarding investigating phenotypic variations in Diospyros spp., specifically in the Sulawesi region. Nine species of Diospyros spp. from the Bogor Botanical Gardens collection were observed for their morphological characteristics and described according to their character traits. The results indicate 25 variations in morphological characteristics out of the 50 characters used. These 14 characteristics are key characteristics that influence the grouping of Diospyros spp. from Sulawesi. Phenetic analysis generates three clades of 9 accessions Diospyros spp. analyzed. Neurological disorders (NDs) are diseases that seriously affect the health of individuals worldwide, potentially leading to a significant reduction in the quality of life for patients and their families. Herbal medicines have been widely used in the treatment of NDs due to their multi-target and multi-pathway features. Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBLs), one of the most popular herbal medicines in the world, have been demonstrated to present therapeutic effects on NDs. However, the pharmacological mechanisms of GBLs in the treatment of neurological disorders have not been systematically summarized. This study aimed to summarize the molecular mechanism of GBLs in treating NDs from the cell models, animal models, and clinical trials of studies. Four databases, i.e., PubMed, Google Scholar, CNKI, and Web of Science were searched using the following keywords: "Ginkgo biloba", "Ginkgo biloba extract", "Ginkgo biloba leaves", "Ginkgo biloba leaves extract", "Neurological disorders", "Neurological diseases", and "Neurodegenerative diseases". All items meeting the inclusion criteria on the treatment of NDs with GBLs were extracted and summarized. Additionally, PRISMA 2020 was performed to independently evaluate the screening methods. Out of 1385 records in the database, 52 were screened in relation to the function of GBLs in the treatment of NDs; of these 52 records, 39 were preclinical trials and 13 were clinical studies. Analysis of pharmacological studies revealed that GBLs can improve memory, cognition, behavior, and psychopathology of NDs and that the most frequently associated GBLs are depression, followed by Alzheimer's disease, stroke, Huntington's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Additionally, the clinical studies of depression, AD, and stroke are the most common, and most of the remaining ND data are available from in vitro or in vivo animal studies. Moreover, the possible mechanisms of GBLs in treating NDs are mainly through free radical scavenging, anti-oxidant activity, anti-inflammatory response, mitochondrial protection, neurotransmitter regulation, and antagonism of PAF. This is the first paper to systematically and comprehensively investigate the pharmacological effects and neuroprotective mechanisms of GBLs in the treatment of NDs thus far. All findings contribute to a better understanding of the efficacy and complexity of GBLs in treating NDs, which is of great significance for the further clinical application of this herbal medicine. In order to efficiently detect total nitrogen content in Korla fragrant pear leaves, near-infrared spectroscopy technology was utilized to develop a detection model. The collected spectra underwent various preprocessing techniques including first-order derivative, second-order derivative, Savitzky–Golay + second-order derivative, multivariate scattering correction, multivariate scattering correction + first-order derivative, and standard normal variable transformation + second-order derivative. A competitive adaptive reweighted sampling algorithm was employed to extract characteristic wavelengths, and a prediction model for the total nitrogen content of fragrant pear leaves was established by combining the random forest algorithm, genetic algorithm-based random forest algorithm, radial basis neural network algorithm, and extreme learning machine algorithm. The study found that spectral preprocessing of SNV + SD along with the radial basis neural network algorithm yielded better predictions for total nitrogen content of fragrant pear leaves. The validation set results showed an R2 of 0.8547, RMSE of 0.291%, and RPD of 2.699. Therefore, the SNV + SD + CARS + RBF algorithm combination model proved to offer optimal comprehensive performance in predicting the total nitrogen content of fragrant pear leaves. Valproic acid is an effective treatment for generalized seizure and related neurological defects. Despite its efficacy and acceptability, its use is associated with adverse drug effects. Moringa oleifera leaves are rich in phytochemical and nutritional components. It has excellent antioxidant and ethnobotanical benefits, thus popular among folk medicines and nutraceuticals. In the present study, 70% ethanol extract of moringa leaves was assessed for its in vivo biochemical and histological effects against valproate-induced kidney damage. Female Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups: Group I: control animals given physiological saline (n = 8); Group II: Moringa extract-administered group (0.3 g/kg b.w./day, n = 8); Group III: valproate-administered animals (0.5 g/kg b.w./day, n = 15); and Group IV: valproate + moringa extract (given similar doses of both valproate and moringa extract, n = 12) administered group. Treatments were administered orally for 15 days, the animals were fasted overnight, anesthetized, and then tissue samples harvested. In the valproate-administered experimental group, serum urea and uric acid were elevated. In the kidney tissue of the valproate rats, glutathione was depleted, antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase) disrupted, while oxidative stress biomarker, inflammatory proteins (Tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6), histological damage scores, and the number of PCNA-positive cells were elevated. Polyphenols are plant secondary metabolites that function mostly as a general stress-induced protective mechanism. Polyphenols have also gained interest due to their beneficial properties for human health. Strawberry leaves represent an agro-industrial waste material with relevant bioactive polyphenol content, which could be incorporated into circular economy strategies. However, due to the low quantities of polyphenols in plants, their production needs to be improved for cost-effective applications. The objective of this research was to compare polyphenol production in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa cv. Festival) leaves in plants grown in greenhouse conditions and plants grown in vitro, using three possible elicitor treatments (UV irradiation, cold exposure, and cysteine). General vegetative effects were morphologically evaluated, and specific polyphenolic compounds were quantified by UHPLC-DAD-MS/MS. Gallic acid was the most abundant polyphenol found in the leaves, both in vivo and in vitro. The results showed higher amounts and faster accumulation of polyphenols in the in vitro regenerated plants, highlighting the relevance of in vitro tissue culture strategies for producing compounds such as polyphenols in this species and cultivar. Tamarix gallica L. is a halophytic medicinal shrub traditionally used in the treatment of liver disorders. Leaf and flower infusions are widely used for anti-diarrheic and anti-inflammatory preparations. In this work, we have explored the combined effect of method (Maceration and Decoction) and solvent extraction (70% Methanol, 70% Ethanol, 70% Acetone, and Water) on phenolic composition and biological activities (antioxidant and anti-inflammatory) of different T. gallica organ extracts (Leaves, Flowers, Stems, and Fruits). Obtained results showed that Tamarix leaves reveal more potent antioxidant activity. Methanol (70%) was the best maceration solvent for the extraction of leaves and flowers with high total antioxidant and anti-radical capacities. HPLC analysis showed that catechin, isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, isoquercetin were the major phenolics in 70% methanolic extract. Furthermore, this extract showed considerable anti-inflammatory activity. Summary: Indian white radish Co. 1 (Raphanus sativus L.) contains medicinal quercetin, and its commercial value supports large‐scale quercetin isolation. Various extraction methods, including ultra‐assisted extraction (UAE), maceration extraction (ME), Soxhlet extraction (SE), conventional extraction (CSE) and serial maceration extraction (SME), were employed to extract quercetin from radish leaf sections. RP‐HPLC‐optimising key experimental parameters yielded a linear response for the individual target compounds in the concentration range, with a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 2.2 μg mL−1 (r2 = 0.9995), a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.2 μg per 1.0 g of crushed leaves and repeatability within the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.23–0.37%. For in vitro callus cultures, 2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4‐D), 6‐benzylaminopurine (BAP) and zeatin were used for callus induction from in vitro leaf segments of radish. MS medium enriched with 2,4‐D (0.5 mg) induced the highest percentage of callus at 4 weeks. Among the extraction methods, the SME method yielded the highest recovery of quercetin (96.9%; 1.92 mg g−1 DW), phenolic (26.07 mg g−1 DW) and flavonoid (34.03 mg g−1 DW), compared to other methods and solvents. The callus extract included 0.5 mg of 2,4‐D, 32.07 mg of phenolic, 42.03 mg of flavonoid and 6.46 mg of quercetin. The presence of phytocompounds and quercetin was confirmed by GC–MS/MS and RP‐HPLC. The isolated quercetin (57.9 μg) also showed lethal effects on HT‐29 human colon cancer cells. This method may be effective for evaluating quercetin in radish extracts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two neolignan glycosides including a new one (1), along with seven iridoid glycosides (3 − 9) and nine flavonoid glycosides (10 − 18), were isolated from the leaves of Vaccinium bracteatum. Their structures were established mainly on the basis of 1D/2D NMR and ESIMS analyses, as well as comparison to known compounds in the literature. The structure of 1 with absolute stereochemistry was also confirmed by chemical degradation and ECD calculation. Selective compounds showed antiradical activity against ABTS and/or DPPH. We aimed to examine the potential protective effects of Iraqi H. tiliaceus L. chloroform leaves extract on DEN-induced HCC in male Wistar Albino rats. Rats were assigned to four groups, six in each group. Group I: rats were administered a daily oral dose of 1 mL/kg/day of distilled water. Group II: rats were intraperitoneally injected with 70 mg/kg DEN once per week for 10 consecutive weeks. Group III: rats received 250 mg/kg of chloroform leaves extract. Groups IV: the rats were administered 500 mg/kg of chloroform leaves extract, along with their food, for five days per week over 20 weeks, with a subsequent dose of DEN once per week for 10 consecutive weeks. The results indicate that the extract demonstrated a significant reduction (p<0.05) in oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory mediators, and HCC parameters, the extract also had a beneficial effect on liver function tests, and there was a significant elevation (p<0.05) of antioxidant parameters in a dose-dependent manner. Abstract Background Nowadays Alzheimer’s disease and its treatment methods are global concerns. Patients with this disease have poor prognosis and need supportive treatment. The antioxidant activity, anti-acetylcholinesterase (anti-AChE), anti-butyryl cholinesterase (anti-BChE) and Aβ-amyloid-42 inhibition activities of the ethanolic extracts of both leaves and flowers (LEE and FEE) of Markhamia lutea were assessed. The antioxidant activity of LEE and FEE was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate, oxygen radical absorbance capacity and ferrozine iron metal chelation assays. Additionally, their total flavonoids and total phenolics were determined. The phytochemicals of LEE were analysed using LC–MS/Q-TOF in both positive and negative modes. Also, molecular docking was done for phytochemicals identified in LEE. Result LEE exhibited higher antioxidant and anti-Alzheimer activities in all techniques due to its high flavonoids content. LEE showed better activity than donepezil in case of anti-butyryl cholinesterase than both donepezil and rivastigmine in case of Aβ-amyloid-42 inhibition. A total of 62 compounds were tentatively identified using Ultra-performance Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC–ESI–TOF–MS), viz. 35 flavonoids, 11 phenolic acids, 2 terpenoids, 2 phenylpropanoids derivatives, 7 polyphenols, 3 coumarins and 2 organic acids. The molecular docking of some constituents showed that isorhamnetin-O-rutinoside, sissotrin, 3,5,7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxyflavone (diosmetin), rosmarinic acid, kaempferol hexoside, kampferol-7-neohesperoside, acacetin, taxifolin and apigenin-O-hexoside exert a promising activity as anti-Alzheimer drugs. Conclusion The LEE of Markhamia lutea contains secondary metabolites that is promising to act as natural antioxidants, acetylcholinesterase, butyryl cholinesterase and Aβ-amyloid-42 inhibition inhibitors, which can aid in the treatment of Alzheimer’s. The ecological condition of urban plantations is an urgent problem of our time. The condition of plantations and soils characterizes the ecological and sanitary condition of the environment. In the structure of the cities, urban and forest parks are of particular importance. They mainly perform recreational functions, contributing to improving the health and well-being of city residents. Woody plants, due to their properties to absorb harmful substances that come with air pollution from industrial enterprises and motor vehicles, are one of the main mechanisms for stabilizing the environmental situation in cities. Technogenic pollutants, a significant proportion of which are heavy metals, make a significant contribution to the pollution of ecosystems. Heavy metals represent a specific category of particularly toxic pollutants. The main sources of their entry into the soil are related to human activity. Heavy metals are accumulated by plants, which negatively affects the condition of urban plantations. Soil contamination with heavy metals leads to significant changes in the agrochemical state of the soil and the entire ecosystem. The accumulation of heavy metals in ecosystems depends on various factors, mainly on the condition of the soil and vegetation and the level of anthropogenic impact. The article describes the quantitative content of copper, lead, cadmium, nickel and zinc in the samples of soil and leaves of silver birch growing in the territories of Moscow parks. The sample plots have been laid in different functional areas of the parks: at the alleged sources of negative impact, as well as at points farthest from anthropogenic objects. The results of the study have been compared with the standards for maximum permissible concentrations, the biological absorption coefficient has been calculated, and the accumulation of heavy metals has been revealed depending on the location of the object relative to potential sources of pollution. The soils of the plantations under study contain concentrations of heavy metals that do not exceed the MPC level. The exception is zinc. Its amount in some sample plots has been increased several times. Birch leaves have shown an uneven accumulation of heavy metals depending on both the concentrations of the elements in the soil and the location of the sample plots.

Objectives: Dyslipidemia has currently become a major health challenge that still opens for safer and more effective modes of treatment. The plant Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb. (pandan) has been indicated to contain active ingredients that interfere with the pathological pathway of dyslipidemia. The aim of the study was to test the effects of pandan leaves ethanol extract on lipid and proinflammatory profiles in a rat dyslipidemic model. Methods: Dyslipidemia was induced by administration of high-fat feed for 8 weeks. Treatments (vehicle, the reference drug simvastatin at 1.8 mg/kg, and extract at 200, 300 or 600 mg/kg) were given for 4 weeks following the completion of induction. Results: Significant post-treatment decreases in total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglyceride levels in groups receiving all doses of extract and simvastatin were observed. Similar results were also found in regards to proinflammatory cytokines levels. Pandan extracts significantly lowered the concentrations of IL-6, TNF-α, and NFκB p65. Characterization of metabolite contents of the extract confirmed the presence of the previously suggested active alkaloids pandamarilactonine-A and B. Conclusion: Taken together, results of the present study implied the ameliorating effects of pandan leaves ethanol extract in dyslipidemic condition which is potential for opening an avenue in combating this essential component of metabolic disorder.
