This paper is the product of a roundtable discussion held at the international conference Horizons of Engagement: Eternalizing Bourdieu, organized by the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory of Belgrade, Serbia, the Centre for Advanced Studies of The University of Rijeka, Croatia, the École Normale Supérieure of Paris, France, and the French Institute in Serbia. The event was planned on the occasion of the ninetieth anniversary of the birth of one of the world’s leading sociologists - Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002). The greatest indicator of the scope of Bourdieu’s influence is the fact that he has become the world’s most cited sociologist, ahead of Émile Durkheim, and the world’s second most cited author in social sciences and the humanities, after Michel Foucault and ahead of Jacques Derrida. As part of this discussion, we address the subject of “Bourdieu and Politics”, politics - broadly constructed. We evoke Pierre Bourdieu’s involvement in public affairs during the 1990s, while taking into account the concept of the collective intellectual that Bourdieu introduced into social sciences by giving it a specific meaning.

Efforts to move sociology beyond the nation state and international relations theory have both been plagued by several limitations and dualisms. Recent research has begun to find ways beyond the problems by turning to Pierre Bourdieu's relational conception of social structure and practice. Yet one specific relational structure forming a key part of the puzzle has been neglected or merely implicitly assumed so far: the space of nation states. After clarifying the structural-constructivist nature of this concept, we aim to specify it by constructing an empirical model of the contemporary space of nation states using a specially compiled dataset and tools of geometric data analysis. The analysis reveals the distribution of powers on the world scene, and more specifically, the uneven possession of two varieties of "meta-capital" understood as capacities to regulate the value and exchangeability of certain capitals and to decree what even defines a legitimate "state". We argue that the nation state, which is accurately understood as a contingent construct and well-founded fiction from a Bourdieusian viewpoint, should not be excluded when analyzing the expression and reproduction of contemporary global power relations., (© 2023 The Authors. Turnover rate of individual molecular species of sphingomyelin of adult rat brain myelin and microsomal membranes was determined after an intracerebral injection of 100 microCi of [C3H3]choline. Myelin and microsomal membrane sphingomyelins were isolated from the rest of the lipids. The individual molecular species of benzoylated sphingomyelin were separated and quantitated by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. All individual major molecular species of microsomal and myelin sphingomyelin had maximum incorporation at 6 and 15 days, respectively, after the injection. The specific radioactivity of all the various molecular species of both myelin and microsomal sphingomyelin declined at a similar rate after reaching a maximum. There was no significant difference in the turnover rate of short chain (16:0, 18:0) and long chain (greater than 22:0) fatty acid containing sphingomyelin. The average apparent turnover rate of myelin and microsomal sphingomyelin molecular species was about 14-16 days for the fast pool and about 45 days for the slow pool. It is concluded that individual molecular species of sphingomyelin of myelin and microsomal membranes turned over at a similar rate. Thus, turnover rate of sphingomyelin in myelin and microsomal membranes is not affected by the fatty acyl composition of the lipid.

The fine structure of myelin was studied in glutaraldehyde-fixed rat sciatic nerves depleted of lipid by acetone, chloroform:methanol (2:1 v/v), and chloroform:methanol:concentrated HCl (200:100:1, v/v/v). One portion of each of these nerves, plus the extracts, was saponified and analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography for fatty acids. The remainder of each nerve was stained in osmium tetroxide in CCl(4) (5g/100cc) and was embedded in Epon 812. Thin sections, examined in the electron microscope, revealed the preservation of myelin lamellar structure with a 170 A periodicity in nerves depleted of 98% of their lipids. Preservation of myelin lamellar structure depended on glutaraldehyde fixation and the introduction of osmium tetroxide in a nonpolar vehicle (CCl(4)) after the lipids had been extracted. It is concluded that the periodic lamellar structure in electron micrographs of myelin depleted of lipid results from the complexing of osmium tetroxide, plus uranyl and lead stains, with protein.

Two basic proteins isolated from bovine white matter in connection with a study of the protein-bound phosphoinositides of central nervous system tisstue have been tested for encephalitogenic activity. The biological activity of these proteins, which is equivalent to that of basic encephalitogenic proteins isolated in other laboratories, suggested that they are identical.
