Tese de doutoramento em Arquitetura, apresentada ao Departamento de Arquitetura da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra This dissertation emerged in the wake of the 2008 real-estate crisis and a will to discuss, understand and project the role professional architecture might play in reorganizing collective stakes. The aim was to understand how architecture’s expert knowledge contributed to the political construction of reality. This was developed through the study of a group of Portuguese architects and architecture practices from mid-20th century, specifically from 1945 to 1969. The study of the career of Portuguese architect Fernando Távora (1923-2005) was the starting point and mediator to a specific collective universe of professional formation, urban development and political embattlement. Távora was agent of a culture of architecture in which the ideas of respecting the context, commitment to local needs and history, internationally projected by the reputation of Porto architects Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura, were first articulated. Thus, this dissertation transports a dual questioning: how did post-war Portuguese architects interpret the discipline as politically committed? And, what can we learn from this specific case about the political constitution of the practice of professional architecture? These questions are answered through the study of two elements of professional-political construction: expert discourses and their relations to government, power and political ideology; architecture designs and their relation to the transformation of Portuguese landscapes. The study of discourses cross-reads the development of architecture expert discourses with the emergence of problems of government and languages of power and govenment. This study of discourses derives from an ethnographic study of architecture designs, based on guidelines from material and spatial anthropology. This dissertation attempts to seize architectural designs in their articulations and projections of community, comfort, modernity and culture. The first part of the dissertation, comprising chapters 1 to 3, addresses the formation of a collective project for professional architecture developed by young architects in the post-war, and attempting to draw democratic ideals and practices closer. The second part, comprising chapters 4 to 6, addresses how this collective project of architecture involved the putting forward of a particular view of the city and its edifying mission in national well-being. The third part, comprising chapter 7, adresses how this style of apprehending the city was practiced in the case of an urban renewal process. These parts assemble together a specific urban history and culture, pedagogical experiments in architecture education, and architectural practices that sought to reframe Portuguese urban reality through a professional reframing. This dissertation discusses the intimacies and distinctions between a professional and a political project, transported by the debated identification of being Portuguese with being modern. It discusses how a project of architecture practice articulated a style of apprehending the city and, thus, of performing a desired urban community through the bodies of architecture. It presents arguments for the discussion of how modern architecture practices perform the nation-state and national culture. It identifies how an architecture for a true national culture, with a style of apprehending the city, made a political construction pass through the practice of spatial organization. This dissertation aims to contribute to the identification of some elements allowing to draw architecture’s expert culture closer to democracy. Esta dissertação surgiu no debalde da crise imobiliária de 2008 e de uma vontade de discutir, perceber e projectar o papel que a prática profissional de arquitectura pode desempenhar na reorganização de interesses colectivos. O objectivo foi perceber como o conhecimento especializado da arquitectura contribui para a construção política da realidade. Isto foi desenvolvido através do estudo de um grupo de arquitectos e práticas arquitectónicas portuguesas de meados do seculo XX, especificamente de 1945 a 1969. A análise da carreira do arquitecto português Fernando Távora (1923- 2005) foi o ponto de partida e mediador para um universo colectivo de formação profissional, desenvolvimento urbano e confronto político. Távora foi agente de uma cultura de arquitectura em que o respeito pelo contexto, o compromisso com necessidades e história locais, projectadas internacionalmente pela reputação de arquitectos portuenses como Álvaro Siza Vieira e Eduardo Souto de Moura, foram articuladas pela primeira vez. Como tal, esta dissertação transporta uma dupla interrogação: como é que arquitectos portugueses interpretaram no pós-guerra a disciplina como politicamente comprometida? E o que podemos aprender deste caso específico acerca da constituição política da práctica professional de arquitectura? Procura-se responder a estas questões estudando dois elementos de construção profissional e política: discursos especializados e as suas relações com governo, poder e ideologia política; projectos de arquitectura e a sua relação com a transformação de paisagens portuguesas. O estudo de discursos cruza a leitura do desenvolvimento de discursos arquitectónicos com a emergência de problemas de governação e linguagens de poder e governo. Este estudo de discursos parte do estudo etnográfico de projectos de arquitectura, baseado em directrizes da antropologia material e espacial. Esta dissertação procura capturar projectos de arquitectura nas suas articulações e projecções de comunidade, comforto, modernidade e cultura. A primeira parte, do capítulo 1 ao 3, trata da formação de um projecto colectivo para a prática profissional de arquitectura, desenvolvido por jovens arquitectos no pós-guerra, e que tentou aproximarse de ideais e práticas democráticas. A segunda parte, do capítulo 4 ao 6, trata de como este projecto colectivo de arquitectura implicou a projecção de uma visão particular de cidade e da sua missão edificante no bem-estar nacional. A terceira parte, capítulo 7, trata de como este estilo de apreender a cidade foi praticado no caso de um processo de renovação urbana. Estas partes reúnem uma história e cultura urbana particular, a experiências pedagógicas em educação de arquitectura, a práticas arquitectónicas que procuraram reformular a realidade urbana portuguesa através de uma reformulação profissional. Esta dissertação discute as intimidades e distinções entre um projecto profissional e um projecto político, transportadas pela disputada identificação de ser português com ser moderno. Discute como um projecto de prática arquitectónica articulou um estilo de apreender a cidade e, como tal, de realizar uma desejada comunidade urbana através dos corpos da arquitectura. Apresenta argumentos para a discussão de como práticas modernas de arquitectura realizam o estado-nação e uma cultura nacional. Identifica como uma arquitectura para uma verdadeira cultura nacional, com um estilo de apreender a cidade, fez uma construção política passar através da prática da organização espacial. Esta dissertação pretende contribuir para apontar alguns elementos que permitam aproximar a cultura especializada de arquitectura da democracia. Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Num momento de grande contestação acerca da prisão como pena e de grandes dificuldades em criar condições para a reintegração do recluso na sociedade, começam a surgir novos métodos que procuram potenciar uma reabilitação mais eficaz através de sistemas mais humanos e mais direccionados ao bem estar do indivíduo.A presente dissertação utiliza o Estabelecimento Prisional de Coimbra como caso de estudo para a criação de um novo sistema prisional através de um conceito que privilegia a educação, o trabalho, a boa conduta e a responsabilidade do recluso. É proposto o projeto de uma nova prisão urbana, mantendo as características arquitetónicas da prisão existente. Com esta intervenção procuramos criar ligações mais claras entre a prisão e a cidade, e desta forma aproximar também o indivíduo encarcerado da sociedade.No decorrer deste trabalho, pudemos identificar o processo de transformação da prisão desde a sua criação até ao presente. Comprovamos também que seu propósito como instituição pública, apesar de estar sustentado em valores essenciais, tem sido efetivado de forma instável. Por fim, reconhecemos que a arquitetura pode ter um papel importante na renovação dos princípios existentes e assim almejar uma execução da pena mais justa e uma reintegração mais direta do recluso na sociedade. At a time of great objection regarding the prison as a sentence and great struggle on creating conditions for a detainee’s social reintegration, new methods, that aim at enhancing a more effective rehabilitation, are emerging with focus on more humane systems and targeted to the individual well-being. This dissertation uses the Coimbra’s Prison Establishment as a case study to the creation of a new prison system through a new concept which favors the education, the labour, the good conduct and the inmate’s responsibility. It’s proposed a project of a new urban prison, maintaining the architectonic characteristics of the existing prison. With this intervention, we intend to establish clear connections between the city and the prison and therefore bring the detainee closer to the c ommunity.In the course of this work, we could identify the process of prison transformation since its creation to the present time. We also proved that the goal as a public institution, despite being backed by essential values, is carried out in an unstable way. Finally, we acknowledge that architecture may have an essential role in the renewal of the existing principles and therefore seek for a more just enforcement of a sentence and a more direct reintegration of the individual into society.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Estimulada por um entendimento inato à idoneidade do limiar arquitetónico, a presente dissertação aponta para a problematização do que é, ou pode ser, um espaço limiar. Na medida em que o domínio exterior e o domínio interior se comportam, procura-se perceber as competências físicas do limite que os medeia; numa dialética narrada por um espaço dual, um lugar de transições, oposições e encontros. Considerando uma postura histórica da arquitetura, o conceito de limiar é analisado sob a forma como se estabelece na mesma – isto é feito através de um mapeamento de situações espaciais que alteram as fronteiras entre o dentro e fora. Posteriormente amplia-se a discussão para o seu potencial enquanto espaço de urbanidade e vitalidade; atende-se a edifícios que espelhem um diálogo cordial e permeável entre a sua arquitetura e o exterior. Este trabalho abordará três casos de estudo – de temperamento público – apoiados numa experiência no sítio que permite averiguar inúmeras contingências. Desdobra-se assim uma narrativa baseada na experiência e reminiscência dos espaços, de modo a compreender o momento da entrada na sua capacidade de intermediação; ademais, atenta-se à expressão espacial e ao seu papel tácito na interação social e coesão entre pessoas. Como conclusão, ambiciona-se a verificação da essencialidade de um espaço liminar – das particularidades espaciais que acentuam o seu caráter coletivo e, ainda, a forma como o cenário que o envolve pode influenciar este processo. Stimulated by an intrinsic understanding of the competencies of the architectural threshold, this dissertation points to the problematization of defining the concept of threshold space. Through the behavior of the outer domain and inner domain, one tries to perceive the physical competence of the limit that mediates them; in a dialectic narrated by a dual space, a place of transitions, oppositions, and encounters. Considering a historical approach to architecture, the threshold and its establishment through time are analyzed, by identifying spatial situations that change the boundaries between inside and outside. Consequently, the discussion is broadened to its potential as a space of urbanity and vitality; resorting to buildings that reflect a cordial and permeable dialogue between its architecture and the exterior. This work will address three case studies of public nature, supported by an on-site experience that allows us to investigate numerous contingencies.Thus, a narrative based on the experience and reminiscence of spaces unfolds to understand the moment of entrance in its ability to intermediate; moreover, it pays attention to spatial expression and its implicit role in social interaction and cohesion between people. Concluding, the aim is to verify the essentiality of liminal space – the spatial particularities that accentuate its collective character and also, the way that the scenario surrounding it can influence this process.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Sustainability is an increasingly present theme in everyone's day-to-day life. This concept is equally essential in architecture and urbanism for the planning out of spaces and also for our near future, namely in our cities. In this dissertation, this particular approach on sustainability intends to deliberate and elaborate on the existing connection between the theory and the practice of this concept, with the main focus being the urban perspective, in order to explain its applicability to the city. The methodology adopted for reaching said conclusion is a case study coupled with the elaboration of a plan and an analysis on what sustainable urbanism can be like in a Portuguese city: Lisbon. For its mixture and amalgamation of several European principles and strategies related to urban sustainability, this dissertation scrutinizes the European Green Capital program, picking three case studies in particular: Copenhagen, Ljubljana and Oslo. Starting from the way the program is carried out in these cities, this dissertation sought, mainly from an urban perspective, to identify the sustainable strategies implemented and in what ways the cities benefited from the various changes that took place. For each city, a block-scale analysis is carried out in order to understand how sustainable urban planning changes the structure, experience and perception of the place and imbues it with the characteristics required for becoming a sustainable place for a diverse population. The dissertation is concluded by an analysis on the planning of said program in Lisbon, which won the European Green Capital 2020 award, while stressing some sustainable methods in order to put them in place in another part of the city, Braço de Prata. A sustentabilidade é um tema cada vez mais presente no quotidiano de todos. Também na arquitetura e no urbanismo este conceito se revela essencial para o planeamento dos espaços e para o nosso futuro próximo, nomeadamente nas nossas cidades. A abordagem à sustentabilidade, nesta dissertação, pretende discutir e elaborar sobre a conexão existente entre a teoria e a prática deste conceito, principalmente no que concerne à perspetiva urbana, com o objetivo de tornar mais clara a sua aplicabilidade à cidade. A metodologia adotada para este fim é o estudo de caso combinado com a elaboração de uma análise e plano do que pode ser um urbanismo sustentável numa cidade portuguesa: Lisboa. Pela sua sínteses e articulação de vários princípios e estratégias europeias relativas à sustentabilidade urbana, a dissertação estuda o programa Capitais Verdes Europeias, selecionando três casos de estudo deste programa: Copenhaga, Liubliana e Oslo. A partir da aplicação do programa nestas cidades o trabalho procurou, mormente na perspetiva urbana, identificar as estratégias sustentáveis concretizadas e a forma como as cidades beneficiaram com as várias modificações decorridas. Para cada cidade é realizada uma análise à escala do quarteirão com a finalidade de compreender como o planeamento urbano sustentável altera a estrutura, vivência e perceção do lugar e lhe confere características para que se torne um local sustentável para uma população variada. A dissertação termina por analisar a elaboração deste programa em Lisboa, que ganhou o prémio Capital Verde Europeia 2020, destacando alguns métodos sustentáveis, de modo a aplicá-los noutra parte da cidade, Braço de Prata.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia No presente trabalho investiga-se o impacto que a utilização do automóvel teve na cidade, no território e, consequentemente, na vivência urbana das pessoas. Investiga-se também este fenómeno no contexto de Coimbra, identificando os fatores principais que o conduziram, e conduzem atualmente. O trabalho culmina numa proposta de intervenção no espaço urbano, a Rua do Brasil, guiada por dois princípios: proximidades e prioridades. A brusquidão com que a evolução tecnológica se desenvolveu nos últimos séculos pelo mundo contribuiu para que a sua integração nas cidades tenha sido feita, por vezes, através da sua gestão inexperiente face aos novos paradigmas. Uma das vertentes mais importantes deste desenvolvimento tecnológico foi o automóvel. A sua evolução deu-se a par com a da cidade a partir do século XX. Para além das imensas possibilidades que abriu nos padrões de vivência das pessoas, permitindo conquistar cada vez mais distâncias no quotidiano, causou também o substancial problema da dependência do automóvel. A mobilidade automóvel permite que as relações sociais (trabalho, lazer, consumo, etc.) comecem a desenvolver-se entre lugares distantes, apoiadas principalmente pelas novas redes urbanas em constante evolução, sem possibilidade de serem cobertas através da mobilidade ativa. A vivência urbana das pessoas carateriza-se, em grande parte, por estes lugares distantes e pela consequente mobilidade predominantemente automóvel, deteriorando as relações que as pessoas criam entre si e o espaço que resta entre os destinos do quotidiano.A evolução urbana de Coimbra direcionada para a deslocação automóvel e a atual cultura de produção espacial que mantém a mesma atitude, prolonga este problema da vivência urbana na cidade e questiona-se, já que a dependência do automóvel está impregnada no tecido urbano (e territorial), se será impossível revertê-lo. Procura-se, com a proposta, ilustrar como se pode intervir no espaço urbano de modo a diminuir a necessidade de utilização do automóvel a partir da redução das distâncias entre os vários destinos do quotidiano e do melhoramento do espaço público, de modo a acomodar a mobilidade ativa, atualmente vista como um modo alternativo e irrelevante de transporte pela Câmara Municipal de Coimbra. Estes princípios relativos à proximidade entre os destinos do quotidiano e à prioridade das pessoas no espaço público são centrais para um espaço público qualificado, podendo também aplicar-se a uma escala maior para resolver este problema estrutural. This dissertation investigates the impact that the use of the automobile had on the city, on the territory and, consequently, on the urban experience of people. This phenomenon is also investigated in the context of Coimbra, identifying the main factors that drove to it - and are currently driving to it. The dissertation culminates in a intervention in the urban space, Rua do Brasil, guided by two principles: proximity and priorities.The brusqueness with which technological evolution has developed in the last centuries around the world has contributed to its integration into cities, at times, through its inexperienced management in the face of new paradigms. One of the most important aspects of this technological development was the automobile. Its evolution took place alongside that of the city from the 20th century onwards. In addition to the immense possibilities it opened up in people’s living standards, allowing them to conquer more and more distances in their daily lives, it also caused the substantial problem of car dependence.Motor mobility allows social relations (work, leisure, consumption, etc.) to start to develop between distant places, supported mainly by new urban networks in constant evolution, without the possibility of being covered through active mobility. The urban experience of people is characterized, in large part, by these distant places and the consequent predominantly automobile mobility, deteriorating the relationships that people create with each other and the space that remains between everyday destinations.The urban evolution of Coimbra towards automobile transportation and the current culture of spatial production that maintains the same attitude, extends this problem of urban living in the city and is questioned, since the dependence on the automobile is impregnated in the urban (and territorial) fabric, whether it will be impossible to revert it.The project seeks to illustrate how to intervene in urban space in order to reduce the need to use the car by reducing distances between the various everyday destinations and improving public space, in order to accommodate the active mobility, currently seen as an alternative and irrelevant mode of transport by the Municipality of Coimbra. These principles relating to proximity between everyday destinations and the priority of people in public space are central to a qualified public space and can also be applied on a larger scale to solve this structural problem.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Quando percorremos e observamos a Avenida da Liberdade em Braga, apercebemo-nos que esta é como um organismo em constante mutação, onde o presente dialoga com o passado e está em permanente reinvenção, como se de um palimpsesto se tratasse. Inerentemente, este constante processo de metamorfose aplica-se não só ao edificado como também às vivências e significações que caracterizam este espaço urbano. Assim, visando a interpretação do processo de produção desta paisagem particular, esta dissertação procura fazer uma história urbana da Avenida da Liberdade a partir das relações entre espaço e sociedade. Além de refletirmos sobre alguns dos processos pelos quais se produz paisagem, iremos abordar de que modo é que a arquitetura, para além de um exercício de desenho e construção, se torna um instrumento político, social e cultural. Cada edifício abordado simboliza uma diferente fase da história urbana da Avenida, representa um momento de transformação da estrutura cultural, social e política e, articula representações e memórias urbanas. Este exercício parte do princípio de que o espaço é simultaneamente uma produção material e social, intrinsecamente vinculada às características culturais da sociedade ou grupo que o produz. Dada a complexidade e pluralidade inerente a esta perspetiva diacrónica, o presente trabalho foca-se nos estratos da Avenida da Liberdade produzidos pelos ideais políticos da sociedade durante os regimes republicano, fascista e salazarista. Afinal, estes regimes geraram reformas espaciais que redefiniram social e fisicamente a estrutura da cidade e da sociedade até aos nossos dias. As we stroll along Braga’s Avenida da Liberdade, we realize it is like a living organism in constant transformation, where the present dialogues with the past and is constantly reinvented, as if it were a palimpsest. Thus, this process of constant metamorphosis applies not only to the buildings but also to the experiences and meanings that shape this urban space. Therefore, we seek to present an urban history of Avenida da Liberdade from the duality between space and society, aiming at the interpretation of the production process of this particular landscape. We seek to discuss how architecture becomes a political, social and cultural instrument. Every approached building symbolizes a different historical phase of the Avenida da Liberdade’s urban history, they are a period of transformation in cultural, social and political structures, aswell as shaping urban representations and memories. This dissertation is based on the premisses that space is simultaneously a material and a social production, intrinsically associated to the cultural characteristics of the society or group that produces it. Given the complexity and plurality inherent to this diachronic perspective, this work focuses on the strata of Avenida da Liberdade, produced by the political ideals of society during the republican, fascist and democratic regimes since the nineteenth century. All in all, these regimes originated spatial reforms that socially and physically redefined the city’s structure and society until today.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Incited by the interest in understanding what truly connects architecture and the human and territorial component, the present dissertation has as main objective to study the space-between, from its emergence and development, as an element that promotes happiness and spatial continuity. It should be noted that the interest of architects on this topic arose throughout the 20th century, between the great wars and after the second world war. Starting from this temporal space, we studied the thematic, as architects from various European contexts, in an attempt to renew the conservative architecture propagated by the dictatorial regimes, found in the space-between the margin to create an hybrid between modernity and nationalism. At the first moment, we developed a historical review that transports us to Italy, a geographical space that incorporates the first meetings and experiences of the space-between as an architectural theme. Then, we try to understand its consolidation as a crucial theme for the renovation of modern architecture. Subsequently, we traveled to Portugal, where we studied how portuguese architects who, influenced by international experiences, worked under the regime of António Oliveira Salazar. In a second moment, we start from the reflection of the space-between as an element of ambiguous interpretation and compositional variety for its analysis in various housing programs. The economic rent houses in Barcelos, by Nuno Teotónio Pereira and the single-family houses in Restelo and Cascais, by Alberto José Pessoa and Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia, respectively, make up this analysis. Finally, the conclusions to be drawn from the study developed results in the confrontation of the different languages and solutions obtained by these architects, in order to understand how this theme establishes different degrees of intimacy and responds, in each case, to the basic needs and transversal to all of them. Incitada pelo interesse em entender o que verdadeiramente une a arquitetura e a componente humana e territorial, a presente dissertação tem como principal objetivo estudar o espaço-entre, a partir do seu surgimento e desenvolvimento, enquanto elemento promotor de felicidade e continuidade espacial. De salientar que o despertar do interesse de arquitetos sobre este tema surge ao longo do século XX, entre as grandes guerras e após a segunda guerra mundial. Partindo deste espaço temporal, estudamos a temática, como arquitetos de vários contextos europeus, na tentativa de renovar a arquitetura conservadorista propagada pelos regimes ditatoriais, encontraram no espaço-entre a margem para criar um híbrido entre a modernidade e o nacionalismo. Num primeiro momento desenvolvemos uma resenha histórica que nos transporta até Itália, espaço geográfico que, por sua vez, incorpora os primeiros encontros e experiências do espaço-entre enquanto tema arquitetónico. De seguida, procuramos entender a sua consolidação enquanto tema crucial para a renovação da arquitetura moderna. Posteriormente, viajamos até Portugal, onde estudamos como arquitetos portugueses que, influenciados pelas experiências internacionais, o trabalharam ainda sob o regime de António Oliveira Salazar. Num segundo momento, partimos da reflexão do espaço-entre enquanto elemento de interpretação ambígua e variedade compositiva para a sua análise em vários programas de habitação. As casas de renda económica em Barcelos, de Nuno Teotónio Pereira e as vivendas unifamiliares no Restelo e em Cascais, de Alberto José Pessoa e Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia, respetivamente, compõem esta análise. Por fim, as ilações a retirar do estudo desenvolvido resultam no confronto das diferentes linguagens e soluções obtidas por estes arquitetos, de maneira a entender como é que este tema estabelece diferentes graus de intimidade e responde, em cada um dos casos, às necessidades básicas e transversais a todos eles.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia We live in a world in which globalization, created with an industrial revolution and aggravated by the modern movement, and its technologies have been generating a set of standardized models of architecture and space. This pattern has contributed to the departure from vernacular architectural approaches. From the moment that an international level of new standards of efficiency and production is imposed, such as vernacular construction technologies that assume a central role, thus making it pertinent to think about the future of construction reflecting on what was its past.Vernacular architecture materializes a set of environmental constraints in which it is inserted. If in the past, in a context of need, buildings were constructed using passive measures, guaranteeing the maximum possible comfort, it is pertinent to study how various strategies of this architecture and readjust them to the current context of construction and new technologies. With this, there will be a need to think architecture based on the concept of thermodynamics, concepts, formal and material, are based on vernacular architecture.Thinking of vernacular architecture from the study of thermodynamic phenomena, allows us to look at the building in a more complete perspective, making a more scientific analysis of the energy flows of the sun and wind, essentially contributing to the reduction of modern active air conditioning systems , consumption of materials, energy and waste of resources. In this sense, it will not only avoid excessive energy consumption, but also avoid the production of carbon dioxide and possible aggravation of climate change. Vivemos num mundo em que a globalização, iniciada com a revolução industrial e agravada com o movimento moderno, e as suas tecnologias têm vindo a gerar um conjunto de modelos padronizados da arquitetura e do espaço. Este padrão tem contribuído para o afastamento das abordagens arquitetónicas vernaculares. A partir do momento em que se impõem a nível internacional novos padrões de eficiência energética e produtiva, as tecnologias vernaculares de construção poderão vir a assumir um papel central, tornando-se assim pertinente pensar no futuro da construção refletindo sobre o que foi o seu passado. A arquitetura vernacular materializa um conjunto de condicionalismos do meio ambiente em que se insere. Se no passado, num contexto de carência, os edifícios eram construídos usando medidas passivas, garantindo o máximo de conforto possível, é pertinente estudar as várias estratégias desta arquitetura e reajustá-las ao contexto atual da construção e das novas tecnologias. Com isto, surgiu a necessidade de pensar a arquitetura com base no conceito da termodinâmica, cujos princípios, formais e materiais, se baseiam na arquitetura vernacular. Pensar a arquitetura vernacular a partir do estudo dos fenómenos termodinâmicos, permite-nos olhar para a edificação numa perspectiva mais completa, fazendo uma análise mais científica dos fluxos de energia do sol e do vento, contribuindo essencialmente para a redução dos sistemas ativos modernos de climatização, do consumo de materiais, de energia e desperdício dos recursos. Neste sentido, não só evitará o consumo desmesurado de energia, como também evitará a produção de dióxido de carbono e eventual agravamento das mudanças climáticas.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia No contexto brasileiro, as favelas consistem na mais clara manifestação da desigualdade social em forma urbana. São espaços que desde sua emergência têm sofrido intervenções de arquitetos e urbanistas na tentativa de solucionar seus problemas habitacionais e urbanos. Na atualidade o modo de intervir mais difundido nestes espaços são ações de melhoria urbana, denominadas de urbanização de favelas ou de slum-upgrading. Entretanto, é recorrente que estas ações tratem as favelas apenas a partir de suas carências, ignorando suas qualidades e potencialidades. Assim, mesmo introduzindo melhorias físicas no bairro, estas intervenções recorrentemente são extremamente disfuncionais no quesito social.Logo, objetiva-se compreender como realizar intervenções urbanas mais humanas nas comunidades, as quais além de trazer infraestrutura e serviços básicos, também fossem sensíveis e potencializadoras de sua estrutura social. Procura-se, primeiramente, entender o fenômeno da favela na sua totalidade, livrando-se dos preconceitos que as reduzem, para posteriormente estudar as intervenções ali realizadas. A fim de analisar um caso de estudo em concreto, selecionou-se Paraisópolis, a segunda maior favela da cidade de São Paulo que sofreu um intenso processo de urbanização nas últimas décadas. Para tal, recorreu-se a uma extensa recolha bibliográfica incidente nas favelas, nas suas intervenções e no caso de estudo escolhido, a qual foi acompanhada por uma pesquisa realizada à distância com moradores e outros agentes sociais de Paraisópolis para permitir a máxima aproximação da realidade local. A partir deste estudo são propostas estratégias gerais de atuação nas favelas que seriam mais adequadas à sua estrutura interna pré-estabelecida, em conjunto com considerações importantes no momento de se intervir nestes ambientes. Tem-se a intenção de através desta investigação, introduzir um novo olhar, mais humano, para as favelas e suas intervenções, buscando incentivar ações mais bem conseguidas que efetivamente integrem estes espaços e suas populações à cidade e à sociedade. In the Brazilian context, favelas are the clearest manifestation of social inequality in urban form. They are spaces that since their emergence have been intervened by architects and urban planners in an attempt to solve their urban problems. Nowadays, the most widespread intervention in these spaces are urban improvement actions, called urbanização de favelas or slum upgrading. However, it is recurrent that these actions treat favelas only from their lacks, ignoring their qualities and potentialities. Therefore, even introducing physical improvements in the neighborhood, these interventions, recurrently, are extremely dysfunctional in the social sphere. Thus, it is aimed to comprehend how to implement more humane urban interventions in these communities, which besides introducing basic infrastructure and services, were also sensitive to their social structure and enhances it. First, it is sought to understand the phenomenon of the favela in its entirety, getting rid of the prejudices that reduce them, to later analyze the interventions carried out there. For the analysis of a specific case study was selected Paraisópolis, the second largest favela in São Paulo that has been undergone an intense slum upgrading process in recent decades. To this end, an extensive bibliographic collection was used, approaching the favelas, their interventions and the chosen case, which was accompanied by a research remotely done with residents and other social agents of Paraisópolis to get closer to the local reality.From this study, strategic lines of action for the favelas are proposed, which would be more appropriate for their pre-established internal structure, followed by important considerations when intervening in these environments. It is intended through this research, to introduce a new and more humane look to the favelas and their interventions, encouraging better actions that effectively integrate these spaces and their populations to the city and society.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia As cidades brasileiras apresentam diversas formulações de desigualdade, onde são evidenciados problemas relacionados à falta de planejamento urbano, ausência de reforma fundiária, de controle sobre o uso e a forma de ocupação do solo. A paisagem urbana apresenta uma precariedade marcada por espaços que são resultado de uma série de mecanismos que impedem o acesso dos mais pobres à habitação, constantemente levando a uma ilegalidade e irregularidade. O presente estudo analisa a arquitetura enquanto parte de um projeto de desenvolvimento fazendo uma articulação entre a forma arquitetônica, a cidadania e o progresso social, onde a habitação é um mecanismo capaz de gerar liberdades e possibilidades a um grupo de cidadãos marginalizados. Para a execução desta análise, foram feitos estudos de casos presentes na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, além de uma experiência de diálogo direto com moradores. Esse diálogo serviu como base para uma aproximação à realidade vivida por eles, afim alcançar um entendimento do contexto habitacional atual. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo uma interpretação da arquitetura enquanto um meio de progressão social, analisando o contexto que levou à precariedade habitacional no Brasil e fazendo uma reflexão sobre o papel do arquiteto e da arquitetura como mecanismos de criar e organizar espaços coletivos no que diz respeito ao acesso à moradia como necessidade básica de qualquer cidadão.Palavras-chave: Habitação, Cidadania, Arquitetura, Progresso Social, Brasil Brazilian cities exihibit many different forms of inequality, where problems related to the lack of urban planning, the absence of land reform, and the lack of control over the use and the form of land occupation are evidenced. The Brazilian urban landscape is maked by certain spaces that indicate the precarious situations in these cities. These spaces are the result of a series of mechanisms which prevent the poorest from having access to housing, constantly leading to a situation of illegality and irregularity in the cities. The present paper analyzes architecture as part of a development project, making an link between architectural form, citizenship and social progress, where housing is considered as a mechanism that is capable of generating freedom and creating possibilities for the marginalized citizens.The analysis is based on multiple case studies from the city of Rio de Janeiro, and also on an experience of direct dialogue with residents.the extracts of direct dialogue. The dialogue held with the residents served as the basis for an approach to the reality as it is experienced by them, in order to achieve a better understanding of the current housing context. This dissertation aims at an interpretation of architecture as a means of social progression, analyzing the context that led to the precarious situation of housing in Brazil. It also aims to reflect on the role of the architect and architecture as mechanisms to create and organize collective spaces in what regards the access to housing as a basic need for any citizen.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Tensões políticas no Brasil foram recorrentes nesta última década e espaços famosos da cidade de São Paulo serviram como palcos de manifestações políticas e sociais. O vão livre do MASP e o salão caramelo da FAUUSP foram selecionados como casos de estudo desta dissertação, por serem lugares muito representativos para a cidade que demonstram um caráter democrático através de suas distintas maneiras de apropriação, apesar de terem sido concebidos em um passado repressivo de ditadura militar.O propósito desta dissertação está centrado em tentar perceber qual o papel do arquiteto enquanto agente de transformação social, principalmente no que concerne projetar ambientes que convidem à apropriação pública e que sejam espaços que promovam a liberdade e a igualdade, mesmo em regimes antidemocráticos.O presente trabalho está dividido em três capítulos, começando por apresentar os casos de estudo, o MASP e a FAUUSP, e as suas respectivas situações atuais, ou seja, que usos e apropriações acontecem nestes espaços hoje. O segundo capítulo está dedicado a uma abordagem dos rumos tomados pelo Movimento Moderno em sua manifestação arquitetônica no Brasil e, como a tendência brutalista foi exprimida na obra dos arquitetos na cidade de São Paulo. A partir disto, verificar as possíveis associações entre a arquitetura da Escola Paulista Brutalista e a manifestação do Brutalismo no Reino Unido, buscando perceber os vínculos com políticas democráticas em ambas situações. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo faz uma análise detalhada dos casos de estudo, desta vez, com a finalidade de entender seus contextos de formulação e projeto, o financiamento e patrocínio das obras, os históricos de suas envolventes urbanas, assim como os perfis de seus arquitetos idealizadores. Political tensions in Brazil were recurrent over the last decade and famous spaces in the city of São Paulo served as stages for political and social manifestations. The vão livre of MASP and the salão caramelo of FAUUSP were selected as case studies for this dissertation as they are very representative places of the city that demonstrate a democratic character through their different ways of appropriation, despite having been conceived in a repressive past of military dictatorship.The purpose of this dissertation is centered on trying to understand what is the architect's role as an agent of social transformation, especially in what regards designing environments that invite public appropriation and spaces that promote freedom and equality, even in anti-democratic regimes.The present work is divided into three chapters, starting by presenting the case studies, MASP and FAUUSP, and their respective current situations, in other words, what uses and appropriations happen in these spaces today. The second chapter is dedicated to an approach of the directions taken by the Modern Movement in its architectural manifestation in Brazil and, how the brutalist tendency was expressed in the direction taken by the architects in the city of São Paulo. From this, verify the possible associations between the architecture of the Escola Paulista Brutalista and the manifestation of brutalism in the United Kingdom, trying to understand the links with democratic policies in both situations. Finally, the third chapter makes a detailed analysis of the case studies, this time, with the purpose of understanding their contexts of formulation and design, the financing and sponsorship of the works, the histories of their urban surroundings, as well as the profiles of their idealizing architects.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia O objetivo deste trabalho é entender como arquitetos e urbanistas podem proporcionar um ambiente digno para pessoas deslocadas à força, além de promover integração e a cidadania no contexto da “crise dos refugiados.” Desde 2015, temos observado uma intensificação do deslocamento forçado no mundo. Diversas pessoas buscam refúgio, muitas na Europa. As cidades são particularmente atraentes por causa da quantidade e qualidade dos serviços e oportunidades que oferecem, mas também pela redes de imigrantes já estabelecidas que as grandes cidades têm acomodado. Este é o caso de Berlim, cidade européia que recebeu o maior número de refugiados na Europa desde 2015. Lá, porém, a escassez de moradias acessíveis e o ambiente sócio-político faz com que os refugiados vivam física e socialmente afastados das comunidades locais e das infra-estruturas públicas. Então é preciso avaliar como a arquitetura pode intervir. A concepção de novas condições urbanas que integre os refugiados deve contar com muitos mediadores, incluindo arquitetos e urbanistas, devido ao papel da arquitetura e urbanismo na viabilização de novas possibilidades. Repensar as relações espaciais pode ter um papel crucial na inclusão urbana e social. Este trabalho oferece uma análise da resposta espacial de Berlim na atual “crise dos refugiados,” analisando como as soluções arquitetônicas apresentadas por agentes públicos e privados em Berlim produziram as condições para o processo de integração dos refugiados na sociedade europeia. Através de um estudo comparativo de várias soluções arquitetônicas, baseado em uma análise histórica das atuais condições habitacionais e políticas em Berlim, este trabalho espera lançar luz sobre o papel que a arquitetura pode desempenhar na integração das populações refugiadas. The goal of this work is to understand how architects and urban planners can provide or help to provide a dignified environment to forcibly displaced people in the context of the “refugee crisis,” that may support integration and citizenship.Since 2015, we have observed an intensification of forced displacement around the globe, resulting in a large number of people seeking refuge, many of them in Europe. Cities are particularly attractive because of the quantity and quality of services and opportunities they offer, but also because of already established immigrant networks big cities have tended to accommodate. This is the case of Berlin, the European city that received the most refugees in Europe since 2015. There, however, the shortage of affordable housing and the socio-political environment has displaced refugees, living physically and socially detached from local communities and common urban infrastructures. In this sense, there’s a need to evaluate how architecture has played and can play a role in this situation. The construction of new urban conditions capable of integrating newcomers should count on many mediators, including architects and urban planners. Their importance is especially recognised due to the role of architectural and urban space in enabling new living possibilities. Rethinking spatial relationships can play a crucial role in urban inclusion and social integration. This work offers an analysis of Berlin’s spatial response to the ongoing “refugee crisis,” looking closely at how architectural solutions put forward by public and private agents in Berlin have produced the conditions for refugees’ embattled integration process in European society. Through a comparative study of various architectural solutions, grounded on a historical analysis of current housing and political conditions in Berlin, this work hopes to shed light on the role architecture can play in integrating refugee populations.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia A Academia de Coimbra tem ao longo do tempo mostrado uma vivência particular,assim como uma vida associativa que marca desde o início a vida dos estudantes e da cidade, as nstalações Académicas de Coimbra dão lugar a essas vivências. Contudo é de notar algum distanciamento dos estudantes em relação ao edifício. Este tem sofrido alterações pontuais não consensuais, gerando algum desagrado por parte das estruturas internas, assim como da comunidade académica em geral. Este tema surge da necessidade de repensar um espaço nevrálgico da cidade de Coimbra, com um potencial material e imaterial. As Instalações Académicas, apesar de devidamente classificadas enquanto Património, carecem de uma intervenção que dignifique o conjunto enquanto objeto arquitectónico e espaço maior da comunidade estudantil. Ao longo de meio século foi perdendo alguns traços distintivos e foi-se acrescentando ruído à composição moderna. Através de um estudo histórico e de contextualização sobre o que hoje são umas instalações académicas, associado a um estudo participado do caso de Coimbra pretendese descobrir um caminho para suprir as necessidades atuais e devolver o edifício aos estudantes. The Coimbra Academy has, over time, shown a particular experience, as well as an associative life that has impacted the lives of both students and the city since the beginning. The Coimbra Students Center gives place to these experiences, however, it is noteworthy that students are distant from the building. This has undergone occasional non-consensual changes, generating some displeasure on the part of the internal structures, as well as the academic community in general. This theme arises from the need to rethink a crutial space in the city of Coimbra, with material and immaterial potential. The Coimbra Students Center, although properly classified as Heritage, needs an intervention that dignifies the whole building as an architectural object and a space for the student community. Over half a century, some of the distinctive features have been lost and noise has been added to the modern composition. Through a historical study and contextualization of how student centers work today, associated with a participatory study of the case of Coimbra, it is intended to find a way to meet current needs and return the building to students.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Numa altura de grande agitação política e social, correspondente ao segundo pós-guerra, a partir da emergente necessidade de reconstrução do país, surge em Itália um plano de habitação, denominado INA-Casa. Este plano, que regulamenta a construção de bairros sociais, enforma características humanistas e respeitadoras das necessidades reais da população, não só na forma de organizar o espaço individual, como na relação que deve ser estabelecida com o espaço comunitário e até com a forma de pensar cidade. O caso de estudo da presente dissertação é a Unidade de Habitação Horizontal, Tuscolano III, do arquiteto Adalberto Libera. A partir dela, vamos tentar perceber o percurso do arquiteto pela procura de uma arquitetura que interpreta a organização dos espaços, inserida numa filosofia de bem-estar. Através da análise da importância do pátio e de espaços de convívio procuramos entender de que forma este complexo responde à busca do arquiteto por uma arquitetura humanista. Procuramos ainda elucidar-nos sobre a atualidade do projeto, observando como perdurou no tempo e como é vivido e encarado pelos seus moradores atuais. Pelo caminho, contactamos com correntes arquitetónicas que contribuíram para o exercício contínuo do repensar dos objetivos da arquitetura, enquadrada numa perspetiva integradora de todas as áreas criativas do ser humano que têm como dever contribuir para a felicidade do próximo. No fundo, percebemos que a arquitetura pode estar inserida neste grupo, apesar das dificuldades. At a time of great political and social unrest, the second post-war period, stemming from the emerging need for the reconstruction of the country, a housing plan appears in Italy, called INA-Casa. This plan, which regulates the construction of social neighbourhoods, shapes humanistic characteristics that respect the real needs of the population, not only in the way of organizing the individual space, but also in the relationship that must be established with the community space and even with the way of thinking City.The case study of this dissertation is the Horizontal Housing Unit, Tuscolano III, by architect Adalberto Libera. Based on it, we will try to understand the architect's career path through the search for an architecture that interprets the organization of spaces, within a philosophy of well-being. Through the analysis of the importance of the patio and social spaces we try to understand how this complex responds to the architect's search for humanist architecture. We have also tried to clarify the topicality of the project, observing how it has lasted in time and how it is lived and faced by its current residents.Along the way, we have come into contact with architectural trends that have contributed to the continuous exercise of rethinking the objectives of architecture, framed in an integrating perspective of all the creative areas of the human being that have a duty to contribute to people’s happiness. Basically, we realised that architecture can be inserted in this group, despite the difficulties.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Architecture is not an isolated discipline, it is a science and an art that allows us to design spaces and, through these spaces, to attribute qualities to the experiences of those who inhabit them. Participation in architecture emerges, over time and its history, as an attempt to approximate the discipline and the people and to try to solve problems through new approaches to architectural practices, such as the simple use of vernacular techniques and known materials by everyone who is involved in the construction of their spaces.This dissertation emphasizes the importance of the social and human dimension of architecture in a practice that aims to include communities in the design and conception of their own spaces, public or private, by reaffirming that this joint work of approximation, sharing, knowledge and dialogue between professionals and ordinary people it must be continuous, in order to guarantee a more precise response to the social problems that normally arise.The case study of this dissertation was chosen because it was a personal experience of the author, in a participatory process that illustrates several of the points that characterize many architectures of this type. The project developed in Brazil, at Praia do Amor, together with the Municipality of Conde and the beach fishermen, is a clear example of how a process that had the active participation of the community can result in a functional and practical work, while responding specific needs of the population. A Arquitetura não é uma disciplina isolada, é uma ciência e uma arte que nos permite desenhar espaços e, através desses espaços, atribuir qualidades às vivências e experiências de quem os habita. A participação na arquitetura surge, ao longo do tempo e da sua história, como uma tentativa de aproximação da disciplina às pessoas e de resolução de problemas através de novas abordagens de práticas arquitetónicas como, por exemplo, a simples utilização de técnicas vernaculares e materiais conhecidos por todos os envolvidos na construção dos seus espaços.Esta dissertação enfatiza a importância da dimensão social e humana da arquitetura numa prática que pretende incluir as comunidades no desenho e conceção dos seus espaços, públicos ou privados, ao reafirmar que esse trabalho conjunto de aproximação, partilha, conhecimento e diálogo entre profissionais e pessoas comuns deve ser contínuo, de forma a garantir uma resposta mais precisa aos problemas de cariz social que normalmente os despontam.O caso de estudo desta dissertação foi escolhido por ter sido uma experiência pessoal da autora, num processo participado que ilustra vários dos pontos que caracterizam arquiteturas deste tipo. O projeto desenvolvido no Brasil, na Praia do Amor, em conjunto com a Prefeitura de Conde e os pescadores da praia, é um claro exemplo de como um processo que contou com a ativa participação da comunidade pode resultar numa obra funcional e prática, enquanto responde às necessidades específicas da população.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Coimbra suffers from an urban contradiction settled in one of its key focal points: the Mondego River. The premise of this dissertation relies on the theory that the river functions as an urban boundary. Because of the lack of access, infrastructure and program, the river has been a physical barrier between its riverbanks. Around this urban boundary, both margins seem to have their own urban identities, asymmetric and with highly differentiated resources, where the northeastern has dominated the southwestern margin.This dissertation recognizes the historical parameters that possibly split the riverbanks, and aims to foment a reunion between them, by using the river as a mediator of urban relations rather than as an obstacle to these. This dissertation’s hypothesis is that the urban quality and livability of Coimbra has to gain by considering the city’s two margins as one urban whole. To consider these two regions as the target of one enveloping urban strategy can enhance the positive effects of urban and architecture plans addressing the city’s improvement. Even though there are many plans for Coimbra, most have not addressed the separation between its two margins and those that addressed this issue, have conceptualized interventions in the city’s riverfronts as punctual extensions of the city’s northern margin urban needs. None attempted to reunite the two margins by considering them as one whole urban landscape. Furthermore, most plans have not addressed, in an overarching and structural manner, the city’s traffic system in relation to the river, contributing to the understanding of the river as a frontier and not as a “bridge”. Lastly, all the urban plans here considered were not thought as key mechanisms for the production of more sustainable urban patterns, namely by considering the importance of planning and designing alternative forms of transportation in a city dominated by automobile traffic.This dissertation proposes to work through these urban problems and the challenge to integrate the river in the city’s urban conception, by addressing the need for an alternative and inter-connected system of mobility. It will do so by focusing on pedestrian flux as a means to better recognize and organize the city’s heritage and neglected regions. The Mondego River has the potential to become Coimbra’s spinal cord, transforming its urban boundary into the generator of the city’s urban network. Coimbra sofre de uma contradição urbana enraizada num dos seus pontos-chave urbanos: o rio Mondego. A premissa da presente dissertação baseia-se na teoria de que o rio funciona como uma fronteira urbana. Devido à falta de acessibilidade, infra-estruturas e planeamento/programa, o rio tem constituído como barreira física entre as suas margens. Em torno desta fronteira urbana, ambas as margens aparentam ter a sua própria identidade urbana, assimetridade e com recursos altamente diferenciados, onde a margem nordeste tem vindo a dominar a sudoeste.A presente dissertação reconhece os factos históricos que possivelmente distanciaram as margens, e atenta fomentar a reunião entre ambas, através do uso do rio como um mediador de relações urbanas ao invés de um obstáculo entre elas. A hipótese levantada ao longo desta dissertação tem como principal foco a habitabilidade e qualidade urbanas que Coimbra tem a ganhar ao considerar as duas margens da cidade como um todo urbano. Considerar estas duas regiões como o alvo de uma estratégia urbana tem a capacidade de melhorar efeitos positivos de planos arquitetónicos e urbanos destinados ao melhoramento da cidade. Ainda que existam muitos planos para Coimbra, muitos não se dirigem à separação entre as duas margens, e aqueles que se dirigem a este problema conceptualizaram intervenções nas margens da cidade como extensões pontuais das necessidades da margem nordeste. Nenhuma tentou reunir as margens ao considerá-las como um todo urbano. Não obstante, a maioria dos planos não adereçaram de algum modo abrangente e estruturante o sistema de mobilidade da cidade em relação ao rio, contribuindo para que o entendimento do rio como fronteira e não como “ponte”. Por último, todos os planos urbanos aqui considerados não foram pensados como mecanismos chave para a produção de padrões urbanos mais sustentáveis, nomeadamente através de considerar a importância do planeamento e design de formas alternativas de transportação numa cidade dominada pela mobilidade automóvel.A presente dissertação propõe a resolução dos problemas urbanos levantados e a desafiar a integração do rio na concepção urbana da cidade, ao adereçar a necessidade de um alternativo e interligado sistema de mobilidade. Isto será feito através do foco no fluxo pedestre como meio para melhor reconhecer e organizar todo o Património como as áreas negligenciadas da cidade. O rio Mondego detém o potencial de se tornar na espinha dorsal de Coimbra, onde o seu cariz de fronteira urbana é transformado em gerador do network urbano da cidade.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Esta dissertação de mestrado tem como principal objetivo analisar, organizar e sistematizar toda a documentação encontrada sobre o extinto palácio apelidado Real Barraca da Ajuda. A procura documental e estudo historiográfico justificam a sua pertinência ao ter-se como premissa expressar visualmente o complexo palaciano da Real Barraca da Ajuda. A investigação pretende, num primeiro plano, remeter o caso de estudo aos seus antecedentes, origens e precedentes, procurando elucidar com precisão não só a sua envolvente urbana e contextos social, político e económico, como também compreende-lo enquanto obra arquitetónica per si.Torna-se importante integrar uma noção mais precisa e “materializada” sobre o caso de estudo, visando uma mais plena compreensão do mesmo. Apesar de existir matéria documental que expresse a lógica organizacional deste complexo arquitetónico, a sua leitura como corpo com “vida” é apenas feita documentalmente, por texto e em poucas e parcas representações de época. Em suma, os poucos registos documentais existentes sobre o palácio não permitem a sua satisfatória compreensão. Neste sentido, foi produzido “material visual” (modelos bi e tridimensionais) que facilitaram a sua leitura enquanto objeto arquitetónico e contexto urbano e que, espero, possa também potenciar outros tipos de investigações sobre temas convergentes. A construção de uma morada régia na zona do Alto da Ajuda - que perdurou na história como Real Barraca - deve-se à catástrofe que foi o terramoto de Lisboa de 1755. Será a partir daqui que o monarca D.José I, fragilizado pelo terror vivido na capital e no reino, se recusará a habitar em edifícios de pedra. Consequentemente, esta atitude de recusa em residir nos palácios reais disponíveis como Mafra, proporcionará que se repense a forma de se produzir arquitetura régia num novo paradigma onde, contrariamente ao reinado anterior de D.João V, se aplicarão materiais mais efémeros mas que acabarão por contribuir para que este palácio arda e se extinga no ano de 1794.Esta investigação trata, portanto, de capturar este breve e efémero momento da história da arquitetura palaciana e régia portuguesa. This dissertation purposes to analyze, organize and systematize all the documentation regarding the lost palace called Real Barraca da Ajuda. This gathering of information aims to bring a new collected understanding of its background, origins and precedents, elucidating not only its social, political and economic context but architectural form.This dissertation departs from the problem that, although there exists relevant documentary elements and historiographical research expressing the orgazational logic of this architectural complex, its understandings as an architectural body with “life” has been something missing. Most existing representations of it exists in text and through very few original drawings. In other words, the limited documental records about the Real Barraca da Ajuda do not allows its full understanding as once lived architectural complex and urban space. This dissertation therefore, aims to help correting this problem by producing a more precise and “materialized” notion of its architectural shape and urban life.Together with a detailed analysis of existing historical records and relevant research, this wok attemps to visually reproduce the palace, rendering its architectural program and life a more concrete reality. It is this work’s intention this material may serve future research on the subject. This construction of a royal palace at the top of the Alto da Ajuda remembered the Real Barraca was born of the disaster that was the 1755’s Lisbon earthquake. Fearing life in stone constructions, king D.José I refused move to other palaces in the kingdom, ordering instead the erection of a new palace that would put his mind at ease with the possibility of other earthquakes. Unlike the ruler king D.João V, this decision born of fear will produce a new way of conceiving royal architecture, bringing to the fore more ephemeral materials than stone, brick and cement. Ultimately, this will contribute to the demise of the Real Barraca, consumed by fire in 1794. This dissertation is about capturing this brief and ephemeral moment in royal and palatial architecture.
