2. Analysis of NO 2 and O 3 Total Columns from DOAS Zenith-Sky Measurements in South Italy.

Abstract

The Gas Absorption Spectrometer Correlating Optical Difference—New Generation 4 (GASCOD/NG4) is a multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) instrument which measures diffuse solar spectra at the Environmental-Climate Observatory (ECO) of the Italian research institute CNR-ISAC, near Lecce. The high-resolution spectra measured in zenith-sky configuration were used to retrieve the NO 2 and O 3 vertical column densities (VCDs) from March 2017 to November 2019. These good-quality data, proven by the comparison with the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) satellite measurements, were used to characterize the ECO site by exploiting the sinergy with in situ NO 2 and O 3 concentrations and meteorological data. Although stratospheric processes seem to be the main forces behind the NO 2 and O 3 VCDs seasonal trends, diurnal variabilities revealed the presence of a tropospheric signal in the NO 2 VCDs, which had significant lower values during Sundays. Comparison with wind data acquired at the ECO observatory, at 20 m above the ground, revealed how NO 2 VCDs are influenced by both tropospheric local production and transport from the nearby city of Lecce. Abstract

In 1656, a plague epidemic struck the kingdom of Naples. In Terra d’Otranto, the escape from danger was attributed to the intercession of the proto-bishop Oronzo. The elevation of Saint Oronzo as protector of the city of Lecce by Bishop Luigi Pappacoda was a skilful move by the prelate to regain control of the sacred in a troubled time, characterised by the “war for relics” between the Theatines and the Jesuits and the echoes of the Masaniellian revolt. The cult of the saint coincided with the construction of sacred Baroque city of Lecce. The result is a city in which urban space is perfectly marked by the presence of the sacred. The decision to focus on the promotion of a local saint, such as Oronzo, was in line with the dictates of the Council of Trent, which restored value to the bishops’ pastoral action, aiming at an extreme personalisation of the relationship between saints and believers. The aim of the contribution is therefore to highlight the link between the epidemic, Pappacoda’s action and the birth of Baroque Lecce, extending the range of research conducted so far mainly on the city of Lecce to the territory in order to create a true cartography of the sacred. In addition to a survey of the buildings scattered throughout the territory, the study will also analyse the iconography of the patron saint, often accompanied by a synthetic representation of the urban centre over which he exercises his protection.

29. Analysis of Urban Greening Scenarios for Improving Outdoor Thermal Comfort in Neighbourhoods of Lecce (Southern Italy)

Abstract

This study analyses the interactions and impacts between multiple factors i.e., urban greening, building layout, and meteorological conditions that characterise the urban microclimate and thermal comfort in the urban environment. The focus was on two neighbourhoods of Lecce city (southern Italy) characterised through field campaigns and modelling simulations on a typical hot summer day. Field campaigns were performed to collect greening, building geometry, and microclimate data, which were employed in numerical simulations of several greening scenarios using the Computational Fluid Dynamics-based and microclimate model ENVI-met. Results show that, on a typical summer day, trees may lead to an average daily decrease of air temperature by up to 1.00 °C and an improvement of thermal comfort in terms of Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT) by up to 5.53 °C and Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) by up to 0.53. This decrease is more evident when the urban greening (in terms of green surfaces and trees) is increased by 1266 m2 in the first neighbourhood and 1988 m2 in the second one, with respect to the current scenario, proving that shading effect mainly contributes to improving the urban microclimate during daytime. On the contrary, the trapping effect of heat, stored by the surfaces during the day and released during the evening, induces an increase of the spatially averaged MRT by up to 2 °C during the evenings and a slight deterioration of thermal comfort, but only locally where the concentration of high LAD trees is higher. This study contributes to a better understanding of the ecosystem services provided by greening with regard to microclimate and thermal comfort within an urban environment for several hours of the day. It adds knowledge about the role of green areas in a Mediterranean city, an important hot spot of climate change, and thus it can be a guide for important urban regeneration plans.

Abstract

A report from the University of Salento in Lecce, Italy discusses the effects of paracetamol on the motility of hemocytes in Mytilus galloprovincialis, a bivalve mollusk species commonly used as a bioindicator organism. Hemocytes are the immunocompetent cells of bivalve mollusks, and their motility is an important aspect of their immune response. The study found that paracetamol induced alterations in the motility behavior of the hemocytes, with different effects observed in different cell types. Abstract

Red light Baroque. Sex and prostitution in Lecce. This paper is about all the dynamics of trade in human beings aimed at forced prostitution in Lecce: from recruitment in the country of origin up to the placing on the sidewalks. The journalistic inquiry aims to make light on a phenomenon otherwise never told in a city like Lecce, jealous of its beauty and elegance possibly known all over the world. Thanks to the availability of the anti-violence centre managers of "Libera Project" in Lecce, it was possible to know the stories of some Nigerian girls, victims of human beings trade, forced to suffer terrible physical and psychological brutalities by their countrymen, women and men. The investigation reveals the different dynamics existing between Romanian and Nigerian forced prostitution, or between prostitution practised in the apartments or on the way. The report highlights the extent in Salento of this phenomenon, a big business based on the women’s bodies, and both managed by the organised crime in Bari and the Camorra. Nevertheless, it seems that in Lecce public opinion cares more for the respectability of town (especially its old town), than for the safety of these women. The first version of this inquiry won the prize (section “unreleased papers”) dedicated to the memory of a young apulian investigative journalist, Michele Frascaro.

Abstract

TripAdvisor or on the not acted conflict. A case study. Over the last years, Italian hoteliers have developed a profoundly negative attitude towards TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel review website. This study investigates the reasons underlying this attitude with a case study on the hoteliers of the city of Lecce. Empirical findings of this exploratory study indicate that most hoteliers in Lecce consider negative reviews as the most influential factor on the way travelers perceive their hotels. At the same time they call into question the credibility of these negative reviews, maintaining that they could be fake or specious. Despite these opinions, most hoteliers in Lecce tend not to implement any form of collective protest and they basically accept the logic of Web 2.0

Abstract

Fascism, during all twenty years in which it was at the helm of the Italian government, established relations with the Catholic ecclesiastical hierarchy that were sometimes idyllic, sometimes risky in conflict. In terms of permeation, the fascist ideal never reached a total conquest of Catholic political and social thought; but it can not be denied, on the part of a large number of bishops and priests, the adherence sometimes without reserve to fascism and its Duce. Within the province and specifically of the Diocese of Lecce, Msgr. Alberto Costa, bishop of Lecce from 1929 to 1950, was a convinced supporter and an unyielding defender of the social and moral restoration brought by fascism in Italy. Next to the prelate, many were the priests who followed his example, including don Giuseppe De Giorgi. In those days, it/people made he look like anti-fascist to purely venal matters, but he knew how to defend himself against these accusations and was rehabilitated as a convinced supporter of fascism directly by Mussolini. The essay, thanks to the documentation preserved in the State Archives of Lecce, the Archives of the Archbishop's Curia and the Archbishop's Library "Innocenziana" of Lecce and examined, outlines the figure of the two prelates, convinced supporters of the fascist ideal. Abstract

Serra Cicora (Nardò - Lecce) est une nécropole néolithique (Ve millénaire av. J.-C.) comprenant de nombreux monuments funéraires, parmi lesquels une tombe mégalithique (T10) est à signaler. C’est une construction à sec dont la partie supérieure s'est écroulée mais qui devait s'élever en tronc de cône, une forme connue dans l'architecture rurale actuelle du Salento. Sans mobilier, elle contenait cinq sépultures dont la dernière déposée était une femme de 21-24 ans. La nécropole est située sur un plateau surplombant la côte salentine Ionienne, en position dominante par rapport au territoire environnant. En partie ceint d'un mur, ce plateau est visible de loin et l’impact sur le paysage est considérable. En son centre, signalons également une cabane rituelle autour de laquelle étaient disposées les tombes. Serra Cicora (Nardò - Lecce) is a neolithic Necropolis dated to the 5th millennium BC, with numerous funeral monuments, among which the burial T7 emerges for its monumentality. It is a drystone structure, whose upper part has fallen down but which likely rose with a truncated cone shape, similarly to the present rural architecture in Salento. The burial contained five individuals, of which the last laid down was a 21-24 years old female, without grave goods. The necropolis is located on the flat top of a hill facing the ionic coast of Salento, in a dominant position on the surrounding landscape. The entire area is surrounded by a wall which made the complex visible from a long distance with a remarkable impact on the landscape. At the center of the area a ritual hut has to be evidenced, around which the burials were located.
