Non-alcoholic beer is becoming more and more popular every year. Due to the high demand for such drinks, numerous breweries decided to produce non-alcoholic beer. There are various methods to create a beer with a reduced alcohol content. Among them are biological methods influencing the biochemistry of the brewing process and physical methods focused on removing ethanol from ready beer. Thus far, the most popular methods are vacuum rectification and reverse osmosis. This work evaluated another method called pervaporation for non-alcoholic beer production. During the study, low-alcohol beer (0.58 vol.%) was achieved from standard beer (3.62 vol.%) using pervaporation. The colour of the product remained unchanged at level 7 EBC. The concentration of ferulic acid decreased from 11.5 to 9.1 mg/dm3, and maltol was concentrated, reaching a concentration of 38 mg/dm3 in the final retentate during a 5 h process. The aim of this work was to develop the method of lactic acid (LA) separation from fermented whey. CMI-7000 Cation Exchange Membrane and AMI-7001 Anion Exchange Membrane were employed in electrodialysis process. Experiments showed that the selected membranes separated organic acids effectively (including LA) from other organic ingredients present in medium. Selecting an appropriate volume of a receiving chamber could lead to LA concentration. Moreover, membrane fouling during separation was investigated. This phenomenon is negligible which is the main advantage of this process. As it was shown during batch processes, with the voltage increase, the rate of electrodialysis increases as well. It prompts to a reduction of residence time in electrodialyzer during a continuous separation.

Background and Aims Subcutaneous [SC] vedolizumab presents the opportunity for inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] patients to manage their treatment at home. There are currently no data on the process of transitioning patients established on intravenous [IV] to SC vedolizumab as part of routine clinical care. The aim of this programme is to evaluate the clinical and biochemical outcomes of switching a cohort of IBD patients established on IV vedolizumab to SC, at 12 weeks following the transition. Methods In all, 178 adult patients were offered the opportunity to transition to SC vedolizumab. Patients who agreed were reviewed prior to switching and at Week 12 [W12] after their first SC dose. Evaluation outcomes included disease activity scores, the IBD-Control Patient-Reported Outcome Measures [PROMs], and faecal calprotectin [FCP]. Reasons for patients declining or accepting transitioning, pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions, and risk factors for a poor outcome in SARS-CoV-2 infection were also assessed. Results A total of 124 patients agreed to transition, of whom 106 patients had been on IV vedolizumab for at least 4 months. There were no statistically significant differences in disease activity scores or IBD-Control PROMs between baseline and W12. A statistically significant increase in FCP was observed [31 µg/g vs. 47 µg/g; p = 0.008], although this was unlikely to be clinically relevant. The most common adverse drug reaction reported was injection site reactions [15%]. Based on this cohort of patients, an expected reduction of £572,000 per annum is likely to be achieved. Conclusions Transitioning patients established on IV vedolizumab to SC appears to be safe and effective, with high patient satisfaction and multiple benefits for the health service. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the supply of selected vitamins and minerals in the daily food rations of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Methods. 62 schizophrenia patients (32 women and 30 men aged 21-64, the mean age of women was 41.3 ± 11.2, the mean age of men was 36.1 ± 9.7) took part in the study. A 24-hour diet recall from 3 weekdays and 1 weekend day was used for quantitative assessment of the diet. Results. In the conducted research, it was shown that, despite ensuring the average supply of energy required for a given age and sex group, the food rations of patients of both sexes were characterized by a deficiency of vitamin D, folates, potassium, calcium, and also vitamins E and C, magnesium in men as well as iron and iodine in women. Excessive amounts of vitamins B2, B6, sodium, and phosphorus were found in food rations of persons of both sexes and vitamins A, B1, niacin in food rations of women and also vitamin B12 in food rations of men. Conclusions. No supplementation of schizophrenia patients' diet is recommended; it is only justified in individual cases of patients in whom vitamin and mineral deficiencies were found on the basis of analysis of their food habits. However, it is necessary to provide each schizophrenia patient with appropriate food education that will allow them to choose products that contain all nutrients needed for proper functioning of the body, including the central nervous system. Dairies are obligated to utilize whey after cheese production. From an environmental protection point of view, the high content of lactose and proteins in post-production wastes, like whey, is harmful for the environment. From another point of view, whey is a source of very valuable, active proteins, particularly lactoferrin and serum albumin. Their modulatory potential is exhibited in their pure form and improves after partial, controlled hydrolysis. Unfortunately, the fractionation of this multicomponent medium is not an easy task. The paper describes an integrated process of fractionation of whey proteins. After the first step of treatment based on membrane techniques, the concentrated, most valuable whey proteins were subjected to a few steps of chromatographic separation. The separation properties of the ultrafiltration membranes were unexpected. The typical cut-off boundary was shifted in the direction of components having a lower molecular weight. After laboratory-scale testing, a concept for an industrial-scale process for the isolation of the most valuable whey proteins with purities of nearly 100% was elaborated. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
