Introduction. Lumbosacral spine pain increasingly impacts the quality of life for many individuals, affecting both physical and social aspects. Addressing this issue through effective prevention and treatment is crucial to mitigating its negative effects on society, especially in developed countries. Aim. The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of sanatorium treatment on the quality of life of patients with lumbosacral spine pain syndrome. Material and Methods. The study was conducted on a group of 50 patients who were referred for sanatorium rehabilitation for a 28-day period. This group was selected on the basis of medical history and diagnosed lower lumbosacral pain syndrome not qualified for surgical treatment. Prospective research employed diagnostic survey methods using a questionnaire technique. Assessment of quality of life was conducted using a questionnaire constructed in two parts. The first part, developed by the authors, included questions regarding socio-demographic variables as well as questions related to the functional status, mental condition, and pain experienced by the patients. Introduction. In the era of contemporary changes and evolution of the nursing profession, changing work standards and ergonomics, the professional group of people suffering from cervical spine problems is growing. So far, little research has been conducted on the occurrence of spine problems and their impact on the quality of life of professionally active nurses. Aim. The aim of the study was to analyse and assess the impact of cervical spine complaints on the quality of life of professionally active nurses. Material and Methods. The research was conducted among nursing staff employed in the surgical and preventive departments of the Specialist Municipal Hospital of Nicolaus Copernicus in Toruń. The study group consisted of 100 people, women and men, of whom 80 were qualified for further stages of the study. The prospective studies used survey techniques as well as observation and measurement. In the assessment of dysfunctions related to spinal problems, the Polish version of the questionnaire, the indicator of disability caused by pain in the cervical spine — Neck Disability Index (NDI), was used. Results. The analysis of the conducted research shows that the majority of respondents significantly experience increased pain resulting from work-related stress. Statistical analysis showed that the demographic factors influencing the occurrence of pain are: age (p=0.001), work experience of the respondents (p=0.003) and work system (p=0.026). There was no relationship between gender (p=0.726), marital status (p=0.528) and education of the respondents (p=0.507) and the occurrence of pain. Conclusions. 1. Work-related stress significantly increases the incidence of cervical spine problems among nurses and worsens their quality of life. 2. The most common complaints among professionally active nurses are headaches and tingling and numbness in the limbs. 3. The occurrence of ailments is determined by demographic factors. 4. Professionally active nurses describe their quality of life as average. 5. The nursing team does not consult a doctor before implementing pharmacological treatment. (JNNN 2023;12(3):127–133)

In general, “stress” is the reaction of the body to mental and physical demands placed on it. Stress disrupts mental balance, and reduces the ability to work and function, which negatively affects the performance of duties. The aim of this study was to analyse the level of stress and ways of coping with it among nursing staff. The study covered 220 nurses employed at the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Włocławek. The research tool was the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Brief-COPE. The results of this survey showed the occurrence of average and high levels of experiencing stress in 36% and 40%of staff, respectively. Brief-COPE scale results show that substance use/gender (men) and use of emotional support/place of work (internal medicine department) are significant at p < 0.01. Considering the impact of the workplace on the use of psychoactive substances, it can be seenthat people working in the surgical ward are more likely to use psychoactive substances. Furthermore, nurses in the surgical ward find it easier to think and plan what to do when faced with a difficult life situation. Most often, the respondents with the highest work experience, i.e., the elderly, declared a return to religion. The results of the research indicate that the nursing community experiences stress to an average or significant degree. The strategies are mainly based on active coping and seeking emotional and instrumental support. Further research is needed in this field. This study was not pre-registered on a publicly accessibly registry.

Introduction. Recently, the incidence of brain glial tumours has increased significantly worldwide. Gliomas are among the most malignant types of tumours of the central nervous system. Patients diagnosed with glial tumours have a very unfavourable prognosis leading to death, and the course of the disease itself has a negative impact on their physical, mental and social condition. Aim. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the results of histological and genetic tests as well as the degree of resection of primary CNS tumours on the survival of patients undergoing neurosurgery and complementary oncological treatment — pharmacology and radiotherapy. Material and Methods. The research was carried out on the basis of an analysis of medical records (2019–2021) of 63 adult patients from the Department of Neurosurgery of the Specialist Municipal Hospital of Nicolaus Copernicus in Toruń. The study group included patients who had been diagnosed with a primary brain tumour and had undergone neurosurgery and complementary oncological treatment. The analysis of medical documentation consisted in comparing the results of histopathological tests with the results of specialized molecular tests and correlating them with the survival time of patients. The statistical analysis was carried out using the Pearson correlation, statistical inference was made at the significance level of p=0.05. Results. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the presence of MGMT gene promoter methylation (r=0.30, p=0.018) and IDH mutation (r=0.38, p=0.002) correlated positively with survival. Introduction. Growth depends on genetic, metabolic and also hormonal factors. Growth depends on health, the supply of nutrients and a properly functioning nervous system. Growth hormone deficiency is a disorder that does not cause typical somatic symptoms, but has a negative impact on a child’s life and functioning in society. Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the satisfaction of parents with the treatment with human recombinant growth hormone in children with somatropin-induced pituitary insufficiency. Material and Methods. The studies were conducted among parents of children with somatropin-induced pituitary insufficiency treated with human recombinant growth hormone in the Provincial Complex Hospital of Rydygier in Toruń at the Department of Paediatrics, Endocrinology, Diabetology and Paediatric Neurology, from 1.12.2019 to 1.02.2020. 69 parents of children treated with recombinant growth hormone were included in the study. The mean age of parents of children participating in the study was 11.77 ± 3.53 years. The research tools were: a record, self-questionnaires and the standardized KIDSCREEN-52 health questionnaire for children and adolescents in the version for parents. Results. The highest mean values of the standardized KIDSCREEN-52 scale in the version for parents were shown for the following areas: moods and emotions (84.55 ± 12.73), relationships with parents and home (81.83 ± 10.88) and social acceptance (89.86 ± 12.86). It was found that the higher the quality of the area of physical well-being and health, the lower the need for mental preparation of the child for hospital visits in connection with treatment — rS = 0.254, p = 0.035. The analyses showed that the higher the quality of the area of social support and colleagues, the smaller the difficulty resulting from the treatment-related visits to the hospital ward — rS = 0.266, p = 0.027, there was also a lower need to mentally prepare the child for hospital visits — rS = 0.261, p = 0.030. Conclusions. Satisfaction with treatment with recombinant growth hormone depends on the duration of treatment and the growth results achieved. Parents of children with hypopituitarism are satisfied with the treatment with recombinant growth hormone and assess the treatment positively. (JNNN 2021;10(3):120–125)

Introduction. Back pain syndromes affect people inhabiting every latitude of the globe. They are more or less intense diseases of affluence affecting many professional groups, including nurses. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of selected risk factors on the occurrence of back pain in the lumbar region among nurses from the Specialist City Hospital in Toruń. Material and Methods. The research was carried out at the Specialist City Hospital (SCH) in Toruń after obtaining the consent of the Bioethics Committee and the hospital management. The study included a group of 165 nurses employed in all organizational units of the hospital. The work uses the method of a diagnostic survey, and two research tools — the original survey and the Oswestry questionnaire. Results. Among the analysed demographic factors, only the age and seniority of the respondents predispose to the occurrence of back pain syndrome (p 0.05) was not confirmed among other variables such as: gender, work system, physical load, smoking and past spine injuries. Conclusions. Due to the increase in the average age and seniority among nurses, increasing back pain will become their leading health problems. The broadly understood health education in this professional group should be considered in order to reduce the share of overweight and obesity as factors predisposing to back pain syndrome. Wstęp. Leczenie niskorosłości spowodowanej somatropinową niedoczynnością przysadki jest procesem długotrwałym, obarczonym poważnymi obostrzeniami i wymaganiami. Podawanie hormonu wzrostu w postaci codziennych iniekcji, przechowywanie leku i wizyty kontrolne są uciążliwe i wymagają zaangażowania całej rodziny w proces leczenia. Nie tylko poprawa wzrostu dziecka ale też wiele innych czynników może wpływać na satysfakcję rodziców z efektu leczenia. Cel pracy. Celem pracy jest ocen wpływu czynników demograficznych oraz długość trwania terapii rekombinowanym hormonem wzrostu na satysfakcję rodziców z leczenia dzieci z somatotropinową niedoczynnością przysadki Materiał i metody. W badaniu wzięło udział 69 rodziców dzieci z somatotropinową niedoczynnością przysadki leczonych hormonem wzrostu na oddziale Pediatrii, Endokrynologii, Diabetologii i Neurologii Dziecięcej w Szpitalu Dziecięcym w Toruniu. Do badań wykorzystano ankietę własną oraz standaryzowany kwestionariusz KIDSCREEN-52 wersja dla rodziców. Wyniki i wnioski. Satysfakcja z leczenia rekombinowanym hormonem wzrostu jest zależna od osiągniętych rezultatów wzrostowych dziecka i nie wpływa na nią długotrwałość terapii. Satysfakcja rodziców z leczenia hormonem wzrostu nie zależy od wykształcenia rodziców, miejsca zamieszkania a także płci dziecka. Z badań wynika że satysfakcja zależy od wieku dziecka. Słowa klucze: niskorosłość, terapia hormonem wzrostu, satysfakcja rodziców, somatotropinowa niedoczynność przysadki, długotrwałość terapii, czynniki demograficzne.

Wstęp. Obciążenie stresem należy do poważnych zagrożeń zawodowych w pielęgniarstwie. Pandemia COVID-19 dodatkowo postawiła wiele nowych wyzwań przed personelem medycznym, co może powodować większe obciążenia psychiczne. Cel. Celem badań była ocena wpływu pandemii COVID-19, na stres personelu pielęgniarskiego, niepracującego w bezpośrednim kontakcie z zakażonymi. Materiały i metody. Badaniem objęto grupę 65 osób z personelu pielęgniarskiego, pracującego w siedmiu oddziałach szpitalnych. Wiek badanych mieścił się w zakresie 20–65 lat. W badaniach wykorzystano ankietę opracowaną na użytek badania oraz jedno standardowe narzędzia pomiaru, tj. Skalę Odczuwanego Stresu (PSS-10). Wyniki. Wybuch pandemii spowodował zmianę w odczuwaniu stresu u 98,5% badanych. 89,2% osób zauważyło u siebie nasilone objawy stresu. Stres potęgowały przede wszystkim zmiany na poziomie organizacji pracy oraz lęk przed zakażeniem i przeniesieniem wirusa z pracy na rodzinę. U 6,2% badanych często pojawiały się myśli o rezygnacji lub zmianie pracy. Po roku pracy w pandemii, stres utrzymywał się na poziomie średnim i niskim. Wnioski. Poziom odczuwania stresu, mierzonego rok po wybuchu pandemii, nie wskazuje na obciążenie nadmiernym stresem, a na fazę adaptacji w sytuacji kryzysowej. Skutki pracy w długotrwałym stresie mogą być widoczne dopiero w przyszłości. Wskazane jest dalsze monitorowanie stresu i objęcie personelu pielęgniarskiego wsparciem psychologicznym.

W pracy przypomniano o bezwzględnym przestrzeganiu procedury postępowania personelu medycznego w przypadku konieczności zastosowania przymusu bezpośredniego wobec pacjenta. Omówiono skutki i powikłania zastosowania przymusu bezpośredniego oraz wskazano na skuteczne metody ich zapobiegania. Zawodowa rola pielęgniarek obliguje je do holistycznego spojrzenia na sprawy pacjenta. Zapewnienie wysokiej jakości usług pielęgniarskich, wymaga gruntownego przygotowania zawodowego oraz dobrej znajomości i przestrzegania procedur medycznych. Możliwość wystąpienia powikłań u pacjentów, wobec których zastosowano przymus bezpośredni, stawia przed zespołem medycznym szereg zadań. Wczesne wdrożenie profilaktyki ograniczy do minimum powstanie powikłań, a co za tym idzie, skróci pobyt pacjenta w szpitalu. (PNN 2012;1(3):124-128)

Praca porusza problem zastosowania przymusu bezpośredniego wobec pacjenta oraz omawia aspekty prawne, które to regulują. W pracy przytoczono wybrane fragmenty ustaw oraz szereg regulacji prawnych, gwarantujących właściwą ochronę dóbr osobistych człowieka. Wyjaśniono w niej, za pomocą jakich instrumentów można tych praw dochodzić. Ustawodawca precyzuje sposób oraz zasady postępowania przymusowego wobec pacjenta. Każde odstąpienie od zasad naraża świadczeniodawcę na konsekwencje prawne, dlatego też stosując przymus bezpośredni, należy zadbać o legalność jego stosowania. Biorąc pod uwagę obecne ustawodawstwo prawne, prawa pacjenta są dość dobrze chronione. Problemem jest tylko nieznajomość tych praw przez samych pacjentów, jak również pracowników ochrony zdrowia. Same zapisy w ustawach i rozporządzeniach są dla większości niezrozumiałe i mało czytelne. Wydaje się, że w związku z powyższym, jest za mało publikacji i informatorów, które w sposób jasny i czytelny określają prawa pacjenta. (PNN 2012;1(2):83-85)
