1. Light-ion production in the interaction of 175 MeV quasi-mono-energetic neutrons with iron and with bismuth

Abstract

Nuclear data for neutron-induced reactions in the intermediate energy range of 20 to 200 MeV are of great importance for the development of nuclear reaction codes since little data exist in that range. Also several different applications benefit from such data, notably accelerator-driven incineration of nuclear waste. The Medley setup was used for a series of measurements of p, d, t, $^3$He and $\alpha$-particle production by 175 MeV quasi-mono-energetic neutrons on various target nuclei. The measurements were performed at the The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden. Eight detector telescopes placed at angles between 20$^\circ$ and 160$^\circ$ were used. Medley uses the $\Delta E$-$\Delta E$-$E$ technique to discriminate among the particle types and is able to measure double-differential cross sections over a wide range of particle energies. This paper briefly describes the experimental setup, summarizes the data analysis and reports on recent changes in the previously reported preliminary data set on bismuth. Experimental data are compared with INCL4.5-Abla07, MCNP6 using CEM03.03, TALYS and PHITS model calculations as well as with nuclear data evaluations. Abstract

Accelerator-Driven Systems (ADS) could be employed to incinerate minor actinides and so partly contribute to answer the problem of nuclear waste management. An ADS consists of the coupling of a subcritical fast reactor to a particle accelerator via a heavy material spallation target. The on-line reactivity monitoring of such an ADS is a serious issue regarding its safety. In order to study the methodology of this monitoring, zero-power experimentswere undertaken at the GUINEVERE facility within the framework of the FP6-IP-EUROTRANS programme. Such experiments have been under completion within the FREYA FP7 project. The GUINEVERE facility is hosted at the SCK-CEN site in Mol (Belgium). It couples the VENUS-F subcritical fast core with the GENEPI-3C accelerator. The latter delivers a beam of deuterons, which are converted into 14-MeV neutrons via fusion reactions on a tritiated target. This paper presents one of the investigated methods for ADS on-line reactivity monitoring which has to be validated in the program of the FREYA project. It describes the results obtained when Pulsed Neutron Source experiments are analysed using the so called Area Method, in order to estimate the reactivity of a few sub-critical configurations of the VENUS-F reactor, around keff= 0.96. First the GUINEVERE facility is described. Then, following general considerations on the Area method, the results of its application to the neutron population time decrease spectra measured after a pulse by several fission chambers spread out over the whole reactor are discussed. Abstract

We have measured double-differential cross sections in the interaction of 175 MeV quasimonoenergetic neutrons with O, Si, Fe and Bi. We have compared these results with model calculations with INCL4.5-Abla07, MCNP6 and TALYS-1.2. We have also compared our data with PHITS calculations, where the pre-equilibrium stage of the reaction was accounted respectively using the JENDL/HE-2007 evaluated data library, the quantum molecular dynamics model (QMD) and a modified version of QMD (MQMD) to include a surface coalescence model. Abstract

Double differential cross sections (DDCS) for light charged particles (proton, deuteron, triton, 3He, alpha) and neutrons produced by a proton beam impinging on a 238U target at 62.9 MeV were measured at the CYCLONE facility in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium). These measurements have been performed using two independent experimental set-ups ensuring neutron (DeMoN counters) and light charged particles (Si-Si-CsI telescopes) detection. The charged particle data were measured at 11 different angular positions from 25 degrees to 140 degrees allowing the determination of angle differential, energy differential and total production cross sections.

Abstract

Double-differential cross sections for light charged particle production (up to A=4) were measured in 96 MeV neutron-induced reactions, at TSL laboratory cyclotron in Uppsala (Sweden). Measurements for three targets, Fe, Pb, and U, were performed using two independent devices, SCANDAL and MEDLEY. The data were recorded with low energy thresholds and for a wide angular range (20-160 degrees). The normalization procedure used to extract the cross sections is based on the np elastic scattering reaction that we measured and for which we present experimental results. A good control of the systematic uncertainties affecting the results is achieved. Calculations using the exciton model are reported. Two different theoretical approches proposed to improve its predictive power regarding the complex particle emission are tested. The capabilities of each approach is illustrated by comparison with the 96 MeV data that we measured, and with other experimental results available in the literature., Comment: 21 pages, 28 figures

Abstract

Spallation neutron production in proton induced reactions on Al, Fe, Zr, W, Pb and Th targets at 1.2 GeV and on Fe and Pb at 0.8, and 1.6 GeV measured at the SATURNE accelerator in Saclay is reported. The experimental double-differential cross-sections are compared with calculations performed with different intra-nuclear cascade models implemented in high energy transport codes. The broad angular coverage also allowed the determination of average neutron multiplicities above 2 MeV. Abstract

The Modified Source Multiplication method is used to determine an unknown reactivity level of a reactor from a known one if one has access to the detector counting for both levels when the reactor is fed by a constant neutron source like an Am-Be source. When available, an accelerator driven source, in continuous mode, can be useful as its intensity can be tunable and then adapted to the experimental conditions. However, in that case, the MSM technique must be extended to account for an external source whose intensity, energy and angular distributions can vary from one measurement to another. In this paper, this Modified Multi-Source Multiplication (MMSM) method is applied to measurements done during the FREYA project in the GUINEVERE facility, operated with the GENEPI-3C accelerator providing a mixture of (D,T) and (D,D) neutrons. The monitoring of these sources through the detection of the associated charged particles allows the calculation of the MMSM factors and the estimate of the reactivity values. The results are compared in different configurations with the reactivity obtained with an Am-Be source or in dynamic measurements performed with GENEPI-3C. Their excellent agreement shows the possibility of using such accelerator-based neutron sources for MSM measurements when they are correctly monitored. This is of great interest for deep sub-critical level characterization for which detector count rates per source neutrons might be low.

AbstractThe Source Jerk Integral (SJI) method has been extensively used to determine the subcriticality in VENUS-F zero-power experiments since 2012. The obtained resultswere in the range from −5 $ to about −20 $ and concerned the subcriticalities of accelerator-driven system MYRRHA mockup cores. Within the SALMON program, which is dedicated to the safe loading procedure of pressurized power reactors, five subcritical core configurations were assembled and studied in the VENUS-F reactor in 2019. These cores simulated the loading process in inverse mode: from more reactive to deep subcritical. The subcriticality of five variants of the SC11 VENUS-F core was changed in steps from −20 $ to about −100 $ by replacing the fuel assemblies with lead reflector assemblies. The subcriticality levels were determined with the pulsed neutron source (PNS) and SJI methods. The GENEPI-3C deuterium accelerator coupled with VENUS-F was used as an external neutron source. The results of the measurements obtained with the SJI method are presented in this paper. Time-dependent Monte Carlo calculations were performed to simulate the SJI experiments and to determine spatial-energy correction factors. Static Monte Carlo simulations were performed to calculate neutron spectra and reactivity. The results of the measurements (both SJI and PNS) are compared with the static MCNP calculations.

Abstract

The study of nuclear fission is encountering renewed interest with the development of GEN-IV reactor concepts, mostly working in the neutron fast energy domain. To support the fast reactor technologies, new high quality nuclear data are needed. New facilities are being constructed to produce high intensity neutron beams from hundreds of keV to few tens of MeV (Licorne, NFS, nELBE, ...). They will open new opportunities to provide nuclear data. In this framework the development of an experimental setup called FALSTAFF for a characterisation of actinide fission fragments has been undertaken. Fission fragment yields and associated neutron multiplicities will be measured as a function of the neutron energy. Based on time-of-flight and residual energy technique, the setup will allow the simultaneous measurement of the complementary fragment velocity and energy. The FALSTAFF setup and the upgrade of the first arm prototype with the new ionisation chamber CALIBER will be presented. The performances of the experimental apparatus is discussed.

Abstract

In the past years, the fission studies have been mainly focused on thermal fission because most of the current nuclear reactors work in this energy domain. With the development of GEN-IV reactor concepts, mainly working in the fast energy domain, new nuclear data are needed. The FALSTAFF spectrometer under development at CEA-Saclay, France, is a two-arm spectrometer which will provide mass yields before (2V method) and after (EV method) neutron evaporation and consequently will have access to the neutron multiplicity as a function of mass. The axial ionization chamber, in addition to the kinetic energy value, will measure the energy loss profile of the fragment along its track. This energy loss profile will give information about the fragment nuclear charge. This paper will focus on recent developments on the FALSTAFF design. A special attention will be paid to the impact of the detector material thickness on the uncertainty of different observables.

Abstract

The future NFS installation will produce high intensity neutron beams from hundreds of keV up to 40 MeV. Taking advantage of this facility, data of particular interest for the nuclear community in view of the development of the fast reactor technology will be measured. The development of an experimental setup called FALSTAFF for a full characterization of actinide fission fragments has been undertaken. Fission fragment isotopic yields and associated neutron multiplicities will be measured as a function of the neutron energy. Based on time-of-flight and residual energy technique, the setup will allow the simultaneous measurement of the complementary fragments velocity and energy. The performances of TOF detectors of FALSTAFF will be presented and expected resolutions for fragment masses and neutron multiplicities, based on realistic simulations, will be shown.

Abstract

The Neutrons for Science (NFS) facility will be one of the first installations of the SPIRAL2 facility. NFS will be composed of a time-of-flight baseline and irradiation stations and will allow studying neutron-induced reactions for energies going from some hundreds of keV up to 40 MeV. Continuous and quasi-monoenergetic energy neutron beams will be available. Taking advantage of this new installation, the development of an experimental setup for a full characterization of actinide fission fragments in this energy domain has been undertaken. To achieve this goal a new detection system called FALSTAFF (Four Arm cLover for the STudy of Actinide Fission Fragments) in under development. In this paper, the characteristics of the NFS facility will be exposed and the motivations for the FALSTAFF experiment will be presented. The experimental setup will be described and the expected resolutions based on realistic GEANT4 simulations will be discussed.

Abstract

Over the past years an experimental programme has been run at the neutron beam of The Svedberg Laboratory with the aim to study light-ion production induced by 96 and 175 MeV neutrons for a wide variety of targets. The measurements have been conducted using the Medley facility which allows measurement of p, d, t, He-3 and alpha production at fixed angles (from 20 to 160 degrees in steps of 20 degrees) over a wide dynamic range. An overview of the results obtained at the now finished campaign at 96 MeV will be given. Since 2007 we have been running at 175 MeV with C, O, Si, Fe, Bi and U as target material. Preliminary results from these measurements will be shown and compared to model calculations with Talys-1.2. We also summarize the Medley measurements of elastic np and nd scattering and of angular distributions of fission fragments.

Abstract

We have measured light-ion (p, d, t, 3He and α) production in the interaction of 175 MeV neutrons with iron and bismuth, using the MEDLEY setup. A large set of measurements at 96 MeV has been recently completed and published, and now higher energy region is under investigation. MEDLEY is a conventional spectrometer system that allows low-energy thresholds and offers measurements over a wide angular range. The system consists of eight telescopes, each of them composed of two silicon surface barrier detectors, to perform particle identification, and a CsI(Tl) scintillator to fully measure the kinetic energy of the produced light-ions. The telescopes are placed at angles from 20° to 160°, in steps of 20°. Measurements have been performed at The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala (Sweden), where a quasi mono-energetic neutron beam is available and well characterized. Time of flight techniques are used to select light-ion events induced by neutrons in the main peak of the source neutron spectrum. We report preliminary double differential cross sections for production of protons, deuterons and tritons in comparison with model calculations using TALYS-1.0 code.

Abstract

The neutrons for science (NFS) facility is a component of SPIRAL-2, the new superconducting linear accelerator built at GANIL in Caen (France). The proton and deuteron beams delivered by the accelerator will allow producing intense neutron fields in the 100 keV-40 MeV energy range. Continuous and quasi-mono-kinetic energy spectra, respectively, will be available at NFS, produced by the interaction of a deuteron beam on a thick Be converter and by the Li-7(p, n) reaction on thin converter. The pulsed neutron beam, with a flux up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities, will open new opportunities of experiments in fundamental research as well as in nuclear data measurements. In addition to the neutron beam, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will be available for cross-sections measurements and for the irradiation of electronic devices or biological cells. NFS, whose first experiment is foreseen in 2018, will be a very powerful tool for physics, fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors.

Abstract

Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

Abstract

The study of nuclear fission is encountering renewed interest with the development of GEN-IV reactor concepts, mostly working in the neutron fast energy domain. To support the fast reactor technologies, new high quality nuclear data are needed. New facilities are being constructed to produce high intensity neutron beams from hundreds of keV to few tens of MeV (Licorne, NFS, nELBE,...). They will open new opportunities to provide nuclear data. In this framework the development of an experimental setup called FALSTAFF for a characterisation of actinide fission fragments has been undertaken. Fission fragment yields and associated neutron multiplicities will be measured as a function of the neutron energy. Based on time-of-flight and residual energy technique, the setup will allow the simultaneous measurement of the complementary fragment velocity and energy. The FALSTAFF setup and the upgrade of the first arm prototype with the new ionisation chamber CALIBER will be presented. The performances of the experimental apparatus is discussed. Abstract

International audience; As a prolongation of the FP-6 GUINEVERE (Generation of Uninterrupted Intense NEutron pulses at the lead VEnus REactor)project at the VENUS-F facility at SCK• CEN, the FP-7 FREYA (Fast Reactor Experiments for hYbrid Applications) project was launched in2011. The FREYA project aims at validating the methodology for subcriticality monitoring of a subcritical core as proposed in the MUSEexperiments conclusions. This is needed for the reactivity monitoring of a powerful ADS (Accelerator Driven System) like MYRRHA.Experiments are also needed for sub-critical and critical ADS and LFR (Lead Fast Reactor) core characterisation for benchmarking andlicensing purposes. Several levels of sub-criticality of the first subcritical core were measured applying the integral Source Jerk methodand compared to the reference results obtained with the MSM (Modified Source Multiplication) method.

Abstract

International audience; Experiments with a subcritical core and an external pulsed neutron source (PNS) have been performed at the VENUS-F reactor of theSCK-CEN during the year 2012 within the frame of the FREYA project of the 7th European Framework Programme. Different reactivity levels,obtained by varying the position of the control rods and the safety rods, have been investigated, with values of kef f ranging between 0.9and 0.96. The area-ratio and the prompt decay constant techniques are well-known techniques to determine the reactivity of the systemfrom the results of PNS experiments. However, both techniques are based on the point kinetics model and hence they are affected by thespatial and energy effects present in real systems, which will cause them to produce biased values of the reactivity. In this work, we applya methodology based on Monte Carlo simulations to assess the spatial and energy effects present in the VENUS-F core and to determinerelationships between the reactivity and the measured parameters (area-ratio and prompt decay constant) that take into account these effects and allow the application of the reactivity determination techniques to obtain accurate reactivity values beyond the limits of the point kinetics model. The results of the validation of this methodology against the experimental results obtained in the VENUS-F reactor will also be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; GUINEVERE and FREYA are European projects devoted to experimental studies ofaccelerator-driven system feasibility. They are mainly dedicated to on-line reactivitymonitoring, subcriticality determination and operational procedures. An experimentalreactor of SCK•CEN (Belgium) modified into a fast lead core, VENUS-F, is coupled to aversatile accelerator-driven neutron source developed by CNRS/IN2P3 (France) driving thereactor in different modes. A deuteron beam is provided by an electrostatic acceleratorwith a time structure driven solely by the ion source. The deuteron ions are accelerated(220 keV) onto a tritiated target located at the centre of the reactor core, creating neutronsby T(d,n) 4 He reactions. This paper describes the design and commissioning of the facilityand reports on the operation of the accelerator coupled to the reactor.

Abstract

Accelerator-Driven Systems (ADS) could be employed to incinerate minor actinides and so partly contribute to answer the problem of nuclear waste management. An ADS consists of the coupling of a subcritical fast reactor to a particle accelerator via a heavy material spallation target. The on-line reactivity monitoring of such an ADS is a serious issue regarding its safety. In order to study the methodology of this monitoring, zero-power experimentswere undertaken at the GUINEVERE facility within the framework of the FP6-IP-EUROTRANS programme. Such experiments have been under completion within the FREYA FP7 project. The GUINEVERE facility is hosted at the SCK-CEN site in Mol (Belgium). It couples the VENUS-F subcritical fast core with the GENEPI-3C accelerator. The latter delivers a beam of deuterons, which are converted into 14-MeV neutrons via fusion reactions on a tritiated target. This paper presents one of the investigated methods for ADS on-line reactivity monitoring which has to be validated in the program of the FREYA project. It describes the results obtained when Pulsed Neutron Source experiments are analysed using the so called Area Method, in order to estimate the reactivity of a few sub-critical configurations of the VENUS-F reactor, around keff= 0.96. First the GUINEVERE facility is described. Then, following general considerations on the Area method, the results of its application to the neutron population time decrease spectra measured after a pulse by several fission chambers spread out over the whole reactor are discussed. Abstract

Accelerator-driven incineration of nuclear waste may play an important role in future scenarios both in countries investing in the nuclear renaissance and in countries deciding to phase out nuclear energy. However, development of accelerator-driven systems requires new and more reliable neutron-induced crosssection data in the intermediate region from 20 to 200 MeV. In this energy region the entire structural properties of the target nucleus may participate in the nuclear reaction, and the nuclear data community expressed the need to obtain benchmark experimental data to improve present models and evaluated nuclear data libraries [1]. A series of neutron induced cross-section measurements at 96 MeV have been conducted at the The Svedberg Laboratory (TSL), Uppsala [2]. However, experimental data are still scarce above 100 MeV. In this perspective, we have measured cross-sections for light-ion production in the interaction of 175 MeV quasi-monoenergetic neutrons with C, O, Si, Fe and Bi. Measurements were conducted at TSL using the Medley spectrometer [3]. We will present inclusive double-differential crosssections for production of protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He and -particles, at eight angles in the laboratory system, from 20 deg to 160 deg. Experimental data are compared with model calculations obtained with INCL4.5-Abla07, TALYS, a modified version of JQMD [4], and MCNP6. All models are able to reproduce the trends in the experimental data, however no approach gives a satisfactory representation of all cross sections data. The most crucial aspect is to describe the formation and emission of composite particles in the pre-equilibrium state. We will discuss reaction mechanisms and we will propose a modified version of the Kalbach systematics that improves TALYS results for proton- and neutron-induced reactions at energies above 100 MeV [5].

Abstract

Hadrontherapy treatments require a very high precision on the dose deposition ( 2.5% and 1-2mm) in order to keep the benefits of the precise ions’ ballistic. The largest uncertainty on the physical dose deposition is due to ion fragmentation. Up to now, the simulation codes are not able to reproduce the fragmentation process with the required precision. To constraint the nuclear models and complete fragmentation cross sections databases; our collaboration has performed an experiment on May 2008 at GANIL with a 95 MeV/u 12C beam. We have measured the fluence, energy and angular distributions of charged fragments and neutrons coming from nuclear reactions of incident 12C on thick water-like PMMA targets. Preliminary comparisons between GEANT4 (G4BinaryLightIonReaction) simulations and experimental data show huge discrepancies.
