Lung functions are adversely affected with both the above treatments. CyberKnife treatment limits radiation damage by tracking targets moving with each breath. The effect of CyberKnife treatment on pulmonary function tests has not been well documented.Methods: Lung cancer patients who underwent CyberKnife treatment and had pre- and post-treatment pulmonary function tests were included. Paired t-tests were conducted. We also conducted subgroup analysis.Results : Thirty-seven patients were included. Median age was 73 years. No statistical difference between mean pre- and post-CyberKnife pulmonary function tests was found.Discussion: We observed that CyberKnife better preserves lung function status compared to current standards of care. Developing femtosecond resolution methods for directly observing structural dynamics is critical to understanding complex photochemical reaction mechanisms in solution. We have used two recent developments, ultrafast mega-electron-volt electron sources and vacuum compatible sub-micron thick liquid sheet jets, to enable liquid-phase ultrafast electron diffraction (LUED). We have demonstrated the viability of LUED by investigating the photodissociation of tri-iodide initiated with a 400 nm laser pulse. This has enabled the average speed of the bond expansion to be measured during the first 750 fs of dissociation and the geminate recombination to be directly captured on the picosecond time scale. Metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited state lifetimes of [Fe(CN)4(2,2’-bipyridine)]2- and [Fe(CN)4(2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine)]2-exhibit strong solvent and ligand dependence. We conclude that these effects can be described with Marcus-like model where changes in the MLCT energy correspond directly to the changes in the electron transfer driving force and all the other factors (e.g. reorganization energy) can be considered constant.

Metallo dithiolene complexes with biological and catalytic relevance are well-known for having strong metal-ligand covalency, which dictates their valence electronic structures. We present the resonant sulfur Kβ (1s3p) X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) for a series of Ni and Cu bis(dithiolene) complexes to reveal the ligand sulfur contributions to both the occupied and unoccupied valence orbitals. While S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy played a critical role in identifying the covalency of the unoccupied orbitals of metal dithiolenes, the present focus on XES explores the occupied density of states. For a series of [Cu(mnt) 2 ] n - and [Ni(mnt) 2 ] n - anions and dianions, a comparison of the nonresonant and resonant S Kβ XES spectra highlights the dramatic improvement in spectral resolution and corresponding ability to differentiate subtle changes in occupied electronic structure across the series. Furthermore, the use of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) probes the valence excited states and the core-valence couplings of the complexes. By employing a theoretical approach based on time-dependent density functional theory to interpret the RIXS spectra, we reveal how metal-ligand covalency influences the excited state energies and covalencies. We identify the low energy excited states as having the same symmetry as the nominal "ligand field" or "d-d" states that typically dominate the photophysics of 3d metal complexes but with significant metal-ligand charge transfer character dictated by their covalency. These results suggest that strong metal-ligand covalency can be used to influence the charge-transfer photochemistry of first row transition metal complexes.

Spin transition (ST) materials are attractive for developing photoswitchable devices, but their slow material transformations limit device applications. Size reduction could enable faster switching, but the photoinduced dynamics at the nanoscale remains poorly understood. Here, we report a femtosecond optical pump multimodal X-ray probe study of polymeric nanorods. Simultaneously tracking the ST order parameter with X-ray emission spectroscopy and structure with X-ray diffraction, we observe photodoping of the low-spin-lattice within ∼150 fs. Above a ∼16% photodoping threshold, the transition to the high-spin phase occurs following an incubation period assigned to vibrational energy redistribution within the nanorods activating the molecular spin switching. Above ∼60% photodoping, the incubation period disappears, and the transition completes within ∼50 ps, preceded by the elastic nanorod expansion in response to the photodoping. These results support the feasibility of ST material-based GHz optical switching applications.

While improvement of mitochondrial function after bariatric surgery has been demonstrated, there is limited evidence about the effects of bariatric surgery on circulatory cell-free (cf) mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and intracellular mtDNA abundance. Plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear (PBM) cells were isolated from healthy controls (HC) and bariatric surgery patients before surgery and 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery. At baseline, the plasma level of short cf-mtDNA ( ND6 , ~100 bp) fragments was significantly higher in obese patients compared to HC. But there was no significant variation in mean ND6 values post-surgery. A significant positive correlation was observed between preop plasma ND6 levels and HgbA1c, ND6 and HOMA-IR 2 weeks post-surgery, and mtDNA content 6 months post-surgery. Interestingly, plasma from both HC and obese groups at all time points post-surgery contains long (~8 kb) cf-mtDNA fragments, suggesting the presence of near-intact and/or whole mitochondrial genomes. No significant variation was observed in mtDNA content post-surgery compared to baseline data in both PBM and skeletal muscle samples. Overall, bariatric surgery improved insulin sensitivity and other metabolic parameters without significant changes in plasma short cf-mtDNA levels or cellular mtDNA content. Our study provides novel insights about possible molecular mechanisms underlying the metabolic effects of bariatric surgery and suggests the development of new generalized approaches to characterize cf-mtDNA.

Reliably identifying short-lived chemical reaction intermediates is crucial to elucidate reaction mechanisms but becomes particularly challenging when multiple transient species occur simultaneously. Here, we report a femtosecond x-ray emission spectroscopy and scattering study of the aqueous ferricyanide photochemistry, utilizing the combined Fe Kβ main and valence-to-core emission lines. Following UV-excitation, we observe a ligand-to-metal charge transfer excited state that decays within 0.5 ps. On this timescale, we also detect a hitherto unobserved short-lived species that we assign to a ferric penta-coordinate intermediate of the photo-aquation reaction. We provide evidence that bond photolysis occurs from reactive metal-centered excited states that are populated through relaxation of the charge transfer excited state. Beyond illuminating the elusive ferricyanide photochemistry, these results show how current limitations of Kβ main line analysis in assigning ultrafast reaction intermediates can be circumvented by simultaneously using the valence-to-core spectral range., (© 2023. The protonation of several Ni-centered pyridine-2-thiolate photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution is investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). While protonation of the pyridinethiolate ligand was previously thought to result in partial dechelation from the metal at the pyridyl N site, we instead observe complete dissociation of the protonated ligand and replacement by solvent molecules. A combination of Ni K-edge and S K-edge XAS of the catalyst Ni(bpy)(pyS) 2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; pyS = pyridine-2-thiolate) identifies the structure of the fully protonated catalyst as a solvated [Ni(bpy)(DMF) 4 ] 2+ (DMF = dimethylformamide) complex and the dissociated ligands as the N-protonated 2-thiopyridone (pyS-H). This surprising result is further supported by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations and is demonstrated for additional catalyst structures and solvent environments using a combination of XAS and UV-vis spectroscopy. Following protonation, electrochemical measurements indicate that the solvated Ni bipyridine complex acts as the primary electron-accepting species during photocatalysis, resulting in separate protonated ligand and reduced Ni species. The role of ligand dissociation is considered in the larger context of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism. As neither the pyS-H ligand nor the Ni bipyridine complex acts as an efficient HER catalyst alone, the critical role of ligand coordination is highlighted. This suggests that shifting the equilibrium toward bound species by addition of excess protonated ligand (2-thiopyridone) may improve the performance of pyridinethiolate-containing catalysts.

We report on the design and testing of glass nozzles used to produce liquid sheets. The sheet nozzles use a single converging channel chemically etched into glass wafers by standard lithographic methods. Operation in ambient air and vacuum was demonstrated. The measured sheet thickness ranges over one order of magnitude with the smallest thickness of 250 nm and the largest of 2.5 μm. Sheet thickness was shown to be independent of liquid flow rate, and dependent on the nozzle outlet area. Sheet surface roughness was dependent on nozzle surface finish and was on the order of 10 nm for polished nozzles. Electron transmission data is presented for various sheet thicknesses near the MeV mean free path and the charge pair distribution function for D 2 O is determined from electron scattering data.

Water is one of the most important, yet least understood, liquids in nature. Many anomalous properties of liquid water originate from its well-connected hydrogen bond network 1 , including unusually efficient vibrational energy redistribution and relaxation 2 . An accurate description of the ultrafast vibrational motion of water molecules is essential for understanding the nature of hydrogen bonds and many solution-phase chemical reactions. Most existing knowledge of vibrational relaxation in water is built upon ultrafast spectroscopy experiments 2-7 . However, these experiments cannot directly resolve the motion of the atomic positions and require difficult translation of spectral dynamics into hydrogen bond dynamics. Here, we measure the ultrafast structural response to the excitation of the OH stretching vibration in liquid water with femtosecond temporal and atomic spatial resolution using liquid ultrafast electron scattering. We observed a transient hydrogen bond contraction of roughly 0.04 Å on a timescale of 80 femtoseconds, followed by a thermalization on a timescale of approximately 1 picosecond. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the need to treat the distribution of the shared proton in the hydrogen bond quantum mechanically to capture the structural dynamics on femtosecond timescales. It is well known that the solvent plays a critical role in ultrafast electron-transfer reactions. However, solvent reorganization occurs on multiple length scales, and selectively measuring short-range solute-solvent interactions at the atomic level with femtosecond time resolution remains a challenge. Here we report femtosecond X-ray scattering and emission measurements following photoinduced charge-transfer excitation in a mixed-valence bimetallic (Fe ii Ru iii ) complex in water, and their interpretation using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Combined experimental and computational analysis reveals that the charge-transfer excited state has a lifetime of 62 fs and that coherent translational motions of the first solvation shell are coupled to the back electron transfer. Our molecular dynamics simulations identify that the observed coherent translational motions arise from hydrogen bonding changes between the solute and nearby water molecules upon photoexcitation, and have an amplitude of tenths of ångströms, 120-200 cm -1 frequency and ~100 fs relaxation time. This study provides an atomistic view of coherent solvent reorganization mediating ultrafast intramolecular electron transfer.

Electron scattering on liquid samples has been enabled recently by the development of ultrathin liquid sheet technologies. The data treatment of liquid-phase electron scattering has been mostly reliant on methodologies developed for gas electron diffraction, in which theoretical inputs and empirical fittings are often needed to account for the atomic form factor and remove the inelastic scattering background. In this work, we present an alternative data treatment method that is able to retrieve the radial distribution of all the charged particle pairs without the need of either theoretical inputs or empirical fittings. The merits of this new method are illustrated through the retrieval of real-space molecular structure from experimental electron scattering patterns of liquid water, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and dichloromethane.

Photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer dynamics following metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation of [Fe(CN) 4 (2,2'-bipyridine)] 2- ( 1 ), [Fe(CN) 4 (2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine)] 2- ( 2 ) and [Fe(CN) 4 (2,2'-bipyrimidine)] 2- ( 3 ) were investigated in various solvents with static and time-resolved UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy and Fe 2p3d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). This series of polypyridyl ligands, combined with the strong solvatochromism of the complexes, enables the 1 MLCT vertical energy to be varied from 1.64 eV to 2.64 eV and the 3 MLCT lifetime to range from 180 fs to 67 ps. The 3 MLCT lifetimes in 1 and 2 decrease exponentially as the MLCT energy increases, consistent with electron transfer to the lowest energy triplet metal-centred ( 3 MC) excited state, as established by the Tanabe-Sugano analysis of the Fe 2p3d RIXS data. In contrast, the 3 MLCT lifetime in 3 changes non-monotonically with MLCT energy, exhibiting a maximum. This qualitatively distinct behaviour results from a competing 3 MLCT → ground state (GS) electron transfer pathway that exhibits energy gap law behaviour. The 3 MLCT → GS pathway involves nuclear tunnelling for the high-frequency polypyridyl breathing mode ( hν = 1530 cm -1 ), which is most displaced for complex 3 , making this pathway significantly more efficient. Our study demonstrates that the excited state relaxation mechanism of Fe polypyridyl photosensitizers can be readily tuned by ligand and solvent environment. Furthermore, our study reveals that extending charge transfer lifetimes requires control of the relative energies of the 3 MLCT and the 3 MC states and suppression of the intramolecular distortion of the acceptor ligand in the 3 MLCT excited state., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interests., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Valence-to-core x-ray emission spectroscopy (VtC XES) combines the sample flexibility and element specificity of hard x-rays with the chemical environment sensitivity of valence spectroscopy. We extend this technique to study geometric and electronic structural changes induced by photoexcitation in the femtosecond time domain via laser-pump, x-ray probe experiments using an x-ray free electron laser. The results of time-resolved VtC XES on a series of ferrous complexes [Fe(CN) 2n (2, 2'-bipyridine) 3-n ] -2n+2 , n = 1, 2, 3, are presented. Comparisons of spectra obtained from ground state density functional theory calculations reveal signatures of excited state bond length and oxidation state changes. An oxidation state change associated with a metal-to-ligand charge transfer state with a lifetime of less than 100 fs is observed, as well as bond length changes associated with metal-centered excited states with lifetimes of 13 ps and 250 ps.

Light-driven molecular reactions are dictated by the excited state potential energy landscape, depending critically on the location of conical intersections and intersystem crossing points between potential surfaces where non-adiabatic effects govern transition probabilities between distinct electronic states. While ultrafast studies have provided significant insight into electronic excited state reaction dynamics, experimental approaches for identifying and characterizing intersections and seams between electronic states remain highly system dependent. Here we show that for 3d transition metal systems simultaneously recorded X-ray diffuse scattering and X-ray emission spectroscopy at sub-70 femtosecond time-resolution provide a solid experimental foundation for determining the mechanistic details of excited state reactions. In modeling the mechanistic information retrieved from such experiments, it becomes possible to identify the dominant trajectory followed during the excited state cascade and to determine the relevant loci of intersections between states. We illustrate our approach by explicitly mapping parts of the potential energy landscape dictating the light driven low-to-high spin-state transition (spin crossover) of [Fe(2,2'-bipyridine) 3 ] 2+ , where the strongly coupled nuclear and electronic dynamics have been a source of interest and controversy. We anticipate that simultaneous X-ray diffuse scattering and X-ray emission spectroscopy will provide a valuable approach for mapping the reactive trajectories of light-triggered molecular systems involving 3d transition metals.

The excited state dynamics of solvated [Fe(bpy)(CN) 4 ] 2- , where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, show significant sensitivity to the solvent Lewis acidity. Using a combination of optical absorption and X-ray emission transient spectroscopies, we have previously shown that the metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state of [Fe(bpy)(CN) 4 ] 2- has a 19 picosecond lifetime and no discernable contribution from metal centered (MC) states in weak Lewis acid solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide and acetonitrile. 1,2 In the present work, we use the same combination of spectroscopic techniques to measure the MLCT excited state relaxation dynamics of [Fe(bpy)(CN) 4 ] 2- in water, a strong Lewis acid solvent. The charge-transfer excited state is now found to decay in less than 100 femtoseconds, forming a quasi-stable metal centered excited state with a 13 picosecond lifetime. We find that this MC excited state has triplet ( 3 MC) character, unlike other reported six-coordinate Fe(ii)-centered coordination compounds, which form MC quintet ( 5 MC) states. The solvent dependent changes in excited state non-radiative relaxation for [Fe(bpy)(CN) 4 ] 2- allows us to infer the influence of the solvent on the electronic structure of the complex. Furthermore, the robust characterization of the dynamics and optical spectral signatures of the isolated 3 MC intermediate provides a strong foundation for identifying 3 MC intermediates in the electronic excited state relaxation mechanisms of similar Fe-centered systems being developed for solar applications.

Background: Use of the thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flap in combination with alloplastic devices has been proven to be a safe method of breast reconstruction. However, preoperative irradiation increases the complication rate and thus some consider preoperative radiotherapy a relative contraindication to alloplastic alone reconstruction. We evaluated the long-term outcomes of patients with preoperative radiotherapy who had delayed alloplastic reconstruction with a TDAP flap., Methods: A retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database was performed to identify patients who had received a Latissimus Dorsi (LD), a Muscle Sparing Latissimus Dorsi (MSLD), or a TDAP flap plus a tissue expander or implant between 2005 and 2012. Information regarding patients' primary diagnosis, radiation history, prior breast reconstructions, and complications was collected and analyzed., Results: Sixteen patients who had a total of 16 breast reconstructions with an LD (6) or TDAP/MSLD1 flap (10). Demographic data, device type, co-morbidities and complications were analyzed. The rate of capsular contracture and size asymmetry were higher in the LD group, but there was no difference noted for major complications. Minor complications were also similar between the 2 groups., Conclusions: Patients who underwent irradiation before TDAP flap did not have a higher complication rate when compared with patients who had a full LD flap following radiation. By integrating well-vascularized, nonradiated tissue of a TDAP flap in reconstruction, overall complication rate may be minimized and the results are comparable to the generally accepted method of utilizing the entire latissimus dorsi muscle.

The apparent forward transfer constant, K transa, for albumin was measured in 9L cerebral tumors in 15 rats. An MRI study using gadolinium-labeled bovine serum albumin was followed by terminal quantitative autoradiography (QAR) using radioiodinated serum albumin. Look-Locker MRI estimates of T(1) followed gadolinium-labeled bovine serum albumin blood and tissue concentration. QAR and MRI maps of K transa were coregistered, a region of interest (ROI) that included the tumor and its surround was selected, and the two estimates of K transa from the ROI on QAR and MRI maps were compared by either mean per animal ROI or on pixel-by-pixel data using a generalized estimating equation. An ROI analysis showed a moderate correlation between the two measures (r = 0.57, P = 0.026); pixel-by-pixel generalized estimating equation analysis concurred (r = 0.54, P < 0.0001). The estimates of QAR with MRI of last time points (e.g., 25 min) showed a moderate correlation (ROI r = 0.55, P < 0.035; generalized estimating equation r = 0.58, P < 0.0001). Differences between the QAR and MRI estimates of K transa did not differ from zero, but the MRI 25-min estimate was significantly lower than the QAR estimate. Thus, noninvasive MRI estimates of vascular permeability can serve as a surrogate for QAR measures., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

MRI has been used to evaluate labeled cell migration and distribution. However, quantitative determination of labeled cell concentration using MRI has not been systematically investigated. In the current study, we investigated the relationships between labeled cell concentration and MRI parameters of transverse relaxation rate, R(2), and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), in vitro in phantoms and in vivo in rats after stroke. Significant correlations were detected between iron concentration or labeled cell concentration and MRI measurements of R(2), ADC, and ADC x R(2) in vitro. In contrast, in vivo labeled cell concentration did not significantly correlate with R(2), ADC, and ADC x R(2). A major factor for the absence of a significant correlation between labeled cell concentration and MRI measurements in vivo may be attributed to background effects of ischemic tissue. By correcting the background effects caused by ischemic damage, DeltaR(2) (difference in R(2) values in the ischemic tissue with and without labeled cells) exhibited a significant correlation to labeled cell concentration. Our study suggests that MRI parameters have the potential to quantitatively determine labeled cell concentration in vivo.

The speed of the evolution in ankle arthroscopy is staggering. Indications for the procedure continue to grow, and surgeons' skill in applying the latest technology to perform surgery better has advanced significantly in a short period of time. Certainly the biggest limitation to this point has been limited access to lesions in the posterior ankle joint. As proficiency and technology improve, better arthroscopic access will be gained to lesions that have traditionally required open arthrotomy.
