Abstract

Acupuncture is increasingly being used in Western medicine. In the present study the effect of acupuncture treatment was examined in 60 patients with chronic pain. The long-term success after 6 months was evaluated in 45 patients. Calculated on the basis of an index of the frequency of pain, its duration and intensity, a global success rate of 64% was found directly after the therapy and of 69% 6 months later. Furthermore, we examined to what extent the success of the therapy was dependent on several variables. It appeared that the consumption of analgesics could be reduced significantly in patients in whom the treatment was successful. All patients had been treated before by several methods. Because of the small number of side-effects and the patients' high degree of acceptance as well as the success of the treatment, we consider acupuncture an effective method in the treatment of chronic pain.

Abstract

Der Einfluss eines sequentiellen submaximalen Krafttrainings (drei Belastungen im Abstand von jeweils zwei Tagen) auf verschiedene Leukozyten-Subpopulationen (CD3+-, CD4+-, CD8+-, CD14+-, CD16+- und CD19+-Zellen) sowie auf die NK-Zell-Aktivität wurde bei zehn klinisch gesunden männlichen Sportstudenten untersucht. Die Ergebnisse weisen bei einzelnen Parametern auf Summationseffekte über die drei Belastungen sowie auf Langzeiteffekte während einer zehntägigen Nachbeobachtungsphase hin. Außerdem scheint die Immunantwort auf Kraftsport im Gegensatz zu Ausdauersport nicht primär über Katecholamine gesteuert zu werden., This study examined the effects of sequential submaximal resistance exercise (three impacts with intervals of two days performed by ten healthy male sports students) on various leucocyte subpopulations (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD14+, CD16+, and CD19+ cells) and the natural killer cell activity. For certain parameters the results indicate cumulative effects along the three impacts as well as long-term effects during the ten days of post exercise observation. Moreover, as opposed to prolonged exercise, the immune response to resistance exercise appears not to be primarily induced via catecholamines.

34. Biocide modification of ultrafiltration membranes using nanofiber structures.

Abstract

Membrane biofouling has a negative effect on membrane performance. Commercial ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were therefore modified using polymeric nanofibers in order to gain additional water treatment functionality. In this case, membrane surface was modified using biocidal electrospun polyurethane nanofibers. It has been found that the inorganic silver in form of reduced silver nitrate is a feasible modification of nanofiber structure, and electrospinning conditions were optimized to maximize silver particle content. Two possible methods were verified for preparing composite UF membranes with antibacterial properties using: (a) direct nanofiber deposition and (b) thermal pressure lamination. Hydrodynamic properties of the developed membranes were tested on an AlfaLaval M10 unit. It has been found that the added functionality comes at the expense of lower permeability. Biocide properties over both short- and long-term operation were confirmed through cultivation techniques and respirometry withEscherichia coliwhile concurrently monitoring how the added silver leached from the nanofiber layer. The results indicate that UF membranes modification using silver-treated nanofibers is a promising technique worth future study and evaluation for advanced water treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Peripheral mononuclear leukocytes (pMNL) bear a population of beta 2-adrenoceptors. Radioreceptor assays with (-)-125Iodocyanopindolol (125I-CYP) are often used to determine the expression of these hormone receptors under physiological and pathological conditions. Doubts on the occurrence of just one class of binding sites as well as the availability of new laboratory equipment prompted us to revise the procedure employed for investigation of these receptors. pMNL were harvested from venous human blood by density centrifugation with LymphopaqueR, LymphoprepR, or FicollR yielding immunologically distinct pMNL fractions. Receptor binding assays were performed semi-automatically with 125I-CYP in the range from 0.6-600 pmol/l. Analysis of the data (modified affinity spectra, Scatchard plot) revealed two classes of binding sites (high- and low affinity binding). The binding isotherms were sigmoidal in the concentration range from 0.6-3.0 pmol/l. Parameters estimated for the high affinity binding site may vary by a factor of 10, depending on the mathematical model employed.
