1. Versatile optical accordion lattices using binary phase transmission gratings

Abstract

Optical accordion lattices are routinely used in quantum simulation and quantum computation experiments to tune optical lattice spacings. Here, we present a technique for creating tunable optical lattices using binary-phase transmission gratings. Lattices generated using this technique have high uniformity, contrast, lattice spacing tunability, and power efficiencies. These attributes are crucial for exploring collective quantum phenomena in highly ordered atomic arrays coupled to optical waveguides for quantum networking and quantum simulation. 2. Collective Quantum Beats from Distant Multilevel Emitters

Abstract

We analyze the dynamics of quantum beats in a system of two V-type three-level atoms coupled to a waveguide. We show that quantum beats can be collectively enhanced or suppressed, akin to Dicke super- and sub-radiance, depending on the interatomic separation and the initial correlations between the atoms. In particular, the interference properties of the collective beats are determined by the distance between the atoms modulo the beat wavelength. We study the collective atomic and field dynamics, illustrating a crossover from a Markovian to a non-Markovian regime as the atomic separation becomes sufficiently large to bring memory effects of the electromagnetic environment into consideration. In such a non-Markovian regime, collective quantum beats can be enhanced beyond the Markovian limit as a result of retardation effects. 3. External Human-Machine Interface on Delivery Robots: Expression of Navigation Intent of the Robot

Abstract

External Human-Machine Interfaces (eHMI) are widely used on robots and autonomous vehicles to convey the machine's intent to humans. Delivery robots are getting common, and they share the sidewalk along with the pedestrians. Current research has explored the design of eHMI and its effectiveness for social robots and autonomous vehicles, but the use of eHMIs on delivery robots still remains unexplored. There is a knowledge gap on the effective use of eHMIs on delivery robots for indicating the robot's navigational intent to the pedestrians. An online survey with 152 participants was conducted to investigate the comprehensibility of the display and light-based eHMIs that convey the delivery robot's navigational intent under common navigation scenarios. Results show that display is preferred over lights in conveying the intent. The preferred type of content to be displayed varies according to the scenarios. Additionally, light is preferred as an auxiliary eHMI to present redundant information. 4. Observation of vacuum-induced collective quantum beats

Abstract

We demonstrate collectively enhanced vacuum-induced quantum beat dynamics from a three-level V-type atomic system. Exciting a dilute atomic gas of magneto-optically trapped $^{85}$Rb atoms with a weak drive resonant on one of the transitions, we observe the forward-scattered field after a sudden shut-off of the laser. The subsequent radiative dynamics, measured for various optical depths of the atomic cloud, exhibits superradiant decay rates, as well as collectively enhanced quantum beats. Our work is also the first experimental illustration of quantum beats arising from atoms initially prepared in a single excited level as a result of the vacuum-induced coupling between excited levels., Comment: 12 pages (including Supplemental Material), 4 figures

5. ROSbag-based Multimodal Affective Dataset for Emotional and Cognitive States

Abstract

This paper introduces a new ROSbag-based multimodal affective dataset for emotional and cognitive states generated using Robot Operating System (ROS). We utilized images and sounds from the International Affective Pictures System (IAPS) and the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS) to stimulate targeted emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust, and neutral), and a dual N-back game to stimulate different levels of cognitive workload. 30 human subjects participated in the user study; their physiological data was collected using the latest commercial wearable sensors, behavioral data was collected using hardware devices such as cameras, and subjective assessments were carried out through questionnaires. All data was stored in single ROSbag files rather than in conventional Comma-separated values (CSV) files. This not only ensures synchronization of signals and videos in a data set, but also allows researchers to easily analyze and verify their algorithms by connecting directly to this dataset through ROS. The generated affective dataset consists of 1,602 ROSbag files, and size of the dataset is about 787GB. The dataset is made publicly available. Multi-robot systems are made up of a team of multiple robots, which provides the advantage of performing complex tasks with high efficiency, flexibility, and robustness. Although research on human-robot interaction is ongoing as robots become more readily available and easier to use, the study of interactions between a human and multiple robots represents a relatively new field of research. In particular, how multi-robots could be used for everyday users has not been extensively explored. Additionally, the impact of the characteristics of multiple robots on human perception and cognition in human multi-robot interaction should be further explored. This paper presents a framework for monitoring human and robot conditions in human multi-robot interactions. The proposed framework consists of four modules: 1) human and robot conditions monitoring interface, 2) synchronization time filter, 3) data feature extraction interface, and 4) condition monitoring interface. The framework is based on Robot Operating System (ROS), and it supports physiological and behavioral sensors and devices and robot systems, as well as custom programs. Furthermore, it allows synchronizing the monitoring conditions and sharing them simultaneously. 19. Towards Automatic Object Detection and Activity Recognition in Indoor Climbing.

Abstract

Rock climbing has propelled from niche sport to mainstream free-time activity and Olympic sport. Moreover, climbing can be studied as an example of a high-stakes perception-action task. However, understanding what constitutes an expert climber is not simple or straightforward. As a dynamic and high-risk activity, climbing requires a precise interplay between cognition, perception, and precise action execution. While prior research has predominantly focused on the movement aspect of climbing (i.e., skeletal posture and individual limb movements), recent studies have also examined the climber's visual attention and its links to their performance. To associate the climber's attention with their actions, however, has traditionally required frame-by-frame manual coding of the recorded eye-tracking videos. To overcome this challenge and automatically contextualize the analysis of eye movements in indoor climbing, we present deep learning-driven (YOLOv5) hold detection that facilitates automatic grasp recognition. To demonstrate the framework, we examined the expert climber's eye movements and egocentric perspective acquired from eye-tracking glasses (SMI and Tobii Glasses 2). Using the framework, we observed that the expert climber's grasping duration was positively correlated with total fixation duration (r = 0.807) and fixation count (r = 0.864); however, it was negatively correlated with the fixation rate (r = −0.402) and saccade rate (r = −0.344). The findings indicate the moments of cognitive processing and visual search that occurred during decision making and route prospecting. Our work contributes to research on eye–body performance and coordination in high-stakes contexts, and informs the sport science and expands the applications, e.g., in training optimization, injury prevention, and coaching. Abstract

This article shows evidence that FDI policies during the catch-up process may leave a trace in the openness of innovation activities in latecomer economies, based on a comparative analysis between the Republic of Korea and China. The past industrial policies of the Republic of Korea favoured creating local technological competence based on the transfer of foreign knowledge in codified form, leading to a low level of global connection in local knowledge creation. By contrast, Chinese policies encouraged the entrance of foreign firms in the Chinese market, leading to a higher level of global interaction in innovation activities. Based on the findings, the article presents policy recommendations and suggests avenues for future research. 28. Scalable CIGS Solar Cells Employing a New Device Design of Nontoxic Buffer Layer and Microgrid Electrode

Abstract

The efficiency of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cells that use transparent conductive oxide (TCO) as the top electrode decreases significantly as the device area increases owing to the poor electrical properties of TCO. Therefore, high-efficiency, large-area CIGS solar cells require the development of a novel top electrode with high transmittance and conductivity. In this study, a microgrid/TCO hybrid electrode is designed to minimize the optical and resistive losses that may occur in the top electrode of a CIGS solar cell. In addition, the buffer layer of the CIGS solar cells is changed from the conventional CdS buffer to a dry-processed wide-band gap ZnMgO (ZMO) buffer, resulting in increased device efficiency by minimizing parasitic absorption in the short-wavelength region. By optimizing the combination of ZMO buffer and the microgrid/TCO hybrid electrode, a device efficiency of up to 20.5% (with antireflection layers) is achieved over a small device area of 5 mm × 5 mm (total area). Moreover, CIGS solar cells with an increased device area of up to 20 mm × 70 mm (total area) exhibit an efficiency of up to 19.7% (with antireflection layers) when a microgrid/TCO hybrid electrode is applied. Thus, this study demonstrates the potential for high-efficiency, large-area CIGS solar cells with novel microgrid electrodes.

To synthesize findings, we applied two approaches. First, a textual narrative synthesis was employed to summarize key study information of the selected studies by focusing on surgical platforms and study participants. Second, a thematic synthesis was employed to identify and characterize intraoperative stressors and their subtypes.Results: Ninety-four studies were included in the review. Regarding the surgical platforms, the selected studies mainly focused on minimally invasive surgery and few studies examined issues around robotic surgery. Most studies examined intra-operative stress from surgeons’ perspectives but rarely considered other clinical personnel such as nurses and anesthetists. Among seven identified stressors, technical factors were the most frequently examined followed by individual, operating room environmental, interpersonal, temporal, patient, and organizational factors.Conclusion: By presenting stressors as multifaceted elements affecting collaboration and interaction between multidisciplinary team members in the operating room, we discuss the potential interactions between stressors which should be further investigated to build a safe and efficient environmen

47. The pitfalls of an inward-oriented economy: lessons from the evolution of Brazil and the Republic of Korea

Abstract

Through the early 1980s, the Republic of Korea had lower per capita income than Brazil. However, in the ensuing decade and a half, the economy of the Republic of Korea grew rapidly and by 1996, the country was admitted to the OECD. In contrast, Brazil failed to make significant progress, becoming stuck in a so-called 'middle-income trap'. In this paper we present a comparative analysis of the economies of the Republic of Korea and Brazil and draw some general lessons for successful catch-up strategies and economic development policy. We identify three key factors underpinning the Republic of Korea's successful catch-up: 1) well planned and consistent government policy; 2) technological specialization; and 3) the nurturing of corporate champions. The economic development process is enormously complex and what works for one economy may not work for another due to contextual differences. Nonetheless, we argue that the successful experience of the Republic of Korea offers some general lessons from the standpoint of government and industrial policy, as well as firm strategy., 1.
