Organic aerosol (OA) constitutes a significant fraction of atmospheric fine particle mass. However, the precursors and chemical processes responsible for a majority of OA are rarely conclusively identified. We use online observations of hundreds of simultaneously measured molecular components obtained from 15 laboratory OA formation experiments with constraints on their effective saturation vapor concentrations to attribute the VOC precursors and subsequent chemical pathways giving rise to the vast majority of OA mass measured in two forested regions. We find that precursors and chemical pathways regulating OA composition and volatility are dynamic over hours to days, with their variations driven by coupled interactions between multiple oxidants. The extent of physical and photochemical aging, and its modulation by NOx, were key to a uniquely comprehensive combined composition-volatility description of OA. Our findings thus provide some of the most complete mechanistic-level guidance to the development of OA descriptions in air quality and Earth system models.

The chemical complexity of atmospheric organic aerosol (OA) has caused substantial uncertainties in understanding its origins and environmental impacts. Here, we provide constraints on OA origins through compositional characterization with molecular-level details. Our results suggest that secondary OA (SOA) from monoterpene oxidation accounts for approximately half of summertime fine OA in Centreville, AL, a forested area in the southeastern United States influenced by anthropogenic pollution. We find that different chemical processes involving nitrogen oxides, during days and nights, play a central role in determining the mass of monoterpene SOA produced. These findings elucidate the strong anthropogenic-biogenic interaction affecting ambient aerosol in the southeastern United States and point out the importance of reducing anthropogenic emissions, especially under a changing climate, where biogenic emissions will likely keep increasing.

Oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) by the nitrate radical (NO3) represents one of the important interactions between anthropogenic emissions related to combustion and natural emissions from the biosphere. This interaction has been recognized for more than 3 decades, during which time a large body of research has emerged from laboratory, field, and modeling studies. NO3-BVOC reactions influence air quality, climate and visibility through regional and global budgets for reactive nitrogen (particularly organic nitrates), ozone, and organic aerosol. Despite its long history of research and the significance of this topic in atmospheric chemistry, a number of important uncertainties remain. These include an incomplete understanding of the rates, mechanisms, and organic aerosol yields for NO3-BVOC reactions, lack of constraints on the role of heterogeneous oxidative processes associated with the NO3 radical, the difficulty of characterizing the spatial distributions of BVOC and NO3 within the poorly mixed nocturnal atmosphere, and the challenge of constructing appropriate boundary layer schemes and non-photochemical mechanisms for use in state-of-the-art chemical transport and chemistry-climate models. This review is the result of a workshop of the same title held at the Georgia Institute of Technology in June 2015. The first half of the review summarizes the current literature on NO3-BVOC chemistry, with a particular focus on recent advances in instrumentation and models, and in organic nitrate and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation chemistry. Building on this current understanding, the second half of the review outlines impacts of NO3-BVOC chemistry on air quality and climate, and suggests critical research needs to better constrain this interaction to improve the predictive capabilities of atmospheric models.

Speciated particle-phase organic nitrates (pONs) were quantified using online chemical ionization MS during June and July of 2013 in rural Alabama as part of the Southern Oxidant and Aerosol Study. A large fraction of pONs is highly functionalized, possessing between six and eight oxygen atoms within each carbon number group, and is not the common first generation alkyl nitrates previously reported. Using calibrations for isoprene hydroxynitrates and the measured molecular compositions, we estimate that pONs account for 3% and 8% of total submicrometer organic aerosol mass, on average, during the day and night, respectively. Each of the isoprene- and monoterpenes-derived groups exhibited a strong diel trend consistent with the emission patterns of likely biogenic hydrocarbon precursors. An observationally constrained diel box model can replicate the observed pON assuming that pONs (i) are produced in the gas phase and rapidly establish gas-particle equilibrium and (ii) have a short particle-phase lifetime (∼2-4 h). Such dynamic behavior has significant implications for the production and phase partitioning of pONs, organic aerosol mass, and reactive nitrogen speciation in a forested environment.

Soils are a major source of nitrogen oxides, which in the atmosphere help govern its oxidative capacity. Thus the response of soil nitric oxide (NO) emissions to forcings such as warming or forest loss has a meaningful impact on global atmospheric chemistry. We find that the soil emission rate of NO in Amazonia from a common inventory is biased low by at least an order of magnitude in comparison to tower‐based observations. Accounting for this regional bias decreases the modeled global methane lifetime by 1.4%–2.6%. In comparison, a fully deforested Amazonia, representing a 37% decrease in global emissions of isoprene, decreases methane lifetime by at most 4.6%, highlighting the sensitive response of oxidation rates to changes in emissions of NO compared to those of terpenes. Our results demonstrate that improving our understanding of soil NO emissions will yield a more accurate representation of atmospheric oxidative capacity. Plain Language Summary: Soils emit a gas called nitric oxide (NO). The amount of NO emitted from soils in tropical forests is not well known, but has been assumed to be small. We simulated how different amounts of NO emissions from soils in the Amazon impacted atmospheric chemistry. By comparing our modeled results to observations we found that NO emissions from soils in the Amazon may be between 10 and 20 times larger than the current default assumption. This matters because NO has a strong influence on the rate at which methane and other gasses are removed from the atmosphere. Therefore soil NO emissions end up impacting how long methane can last in the atmosphere, and that would have additional climate impacts. Even though soil NO emissions are smaller than other sources of NO emissions globally, we find that the amount of NO emitted in the Amazon matters a lot for how long methane can last in the atmosphere. Our results demonstrate that improving estimates of soil NO emissions is going to be necessary for making accurate estimates of how long methane and other reactive species will stay in the atmosphere. The apparent volatility of atmospheric organic aerosol (OA) particles is determined by their chemical composition and environmental conditions (e.g., ambient temperature). A quantitative, experimental assessment of volatility and the respective importance of these two factors remains challenging, especially in ambient measurements. We present molecular composition and volatility of oxygenated OA (OOA) particles in different rural, urban, and remote environments across the globe (including Chacaltaya, Bolivia; Alabama, U.S.; Hyytiälä, Finland; Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, Germany; and Delhi, India) based on deployments of a filter inlet for gases and aerosols coupled to a high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (FIGAERO CIMS). We find on average larger carbon numbers (nC) and lower oxygen-to-carbon (O:C) ratios at the urban sites (nC: 9.8±0.7; O:C: 0.76±0.03; average ± 1 standard deviation), compared to the rural (nC: 8.8±0.6; O:C: 0.80±0.05) and remote mountain stations (nC: 8.1±0.8; O:C: 0.91±0.07), indicative of different emission sources and chemistry. Compounds containing only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms (CHO) contribute highest to the total OOA mass at the rural sites (79.9±5.2%), in accordance with their proximity to forested areas (66.2±5.5% at the mountain sites and 72.6±4.3% at the urban sites). The largest contribution of nitrogen-containing compounds (CHON) are found at the urban stations (27.1±4.3%), consistent with their higher NOx levels. Besides, we parametrize OOA volatility (saturation mass concentrations, Csat) using molecular composition information and compare it with the bulk apparent volatility derived from thermal desorption of the OOA particles within the FIGAERO. We find differences in Csat values of up to ~3 orders of magnitude, and variation in thermal desorption profiles (thermograms) across different locations and systems. From our study, we draw the general conclusion that environmental conditions (e.g., ambient temperature) do not directly affect OOA apparent volatility, but rather indirectly by influencing the sources and chemistry of the environment and thus the chemical composition. The comprehensive global dataset provides results that show the complex thermodynamics and chemistry of OOA and their changes during its lifetime in the atmosphere, and that generally the chemical description of OOA suffices to predict its apparent volatility, at least qualitatively. Our study thus provides new insights that will help guide choices of e.g. descriptions of OOA volatility in different model frameworks which has been previously simplified due to challenges to measure and represent it in models. Ammonia (NH3) is an abundant trace gas in the atmosphere and an important player in atmospheric chemistry, aerosol formation and the atmosphere-surface exchange of nitrogen. It is recognized as a major source of aerosol pollution, and it may limit the formation of cloud nuclei in remote or cold parts of the atmosphere. For soil and plants, NH3-mediated nitrogen can act as a harmful pollutant or as a desirable nutrient, mostly in natural and agricultural settings, respectively. Agriculture is also the main source of atmospheric NH3 via volatilization from fertilizers and manure processing in livestock farming. The accurate determination of NH3 emission rates remains a challenge, partly due to the propensity of NH3 to interact with instrument surfaces leading to high detection limits and slow response times. In this paper, we present a new method for quantifying ambient NH3, using chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) with deuterated benzene cations as reagents. The setup aimed at limiting sample-surface interactions and achieved a 1-σ precision of 10-20 pptv and an immediate 1/e response rate < 0.4 s, which compares favorably to the existing state of the art. The sensitivity exhibited an inverse humidity dependence, in particular in relatively dry conditions. Background of up to 10% of the total signal required consideration as well, as it responded on the order of a few minutes. To showcase the method's capabilities, we quantified NH3 mixing ratios from measurements obtained during deployment on a Gulfstream I aircraft during the HI-SCALE (Holistic Interactions of Shallow Clouds, Aerosols and Land Ecosystems) field campaign in rural Oklahoma during May 2016. Typical mixing ratios were 1-10 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) for the boundary layer and 0.1-1 ppbv in the lower free troposphere. Sharp plumes of up to 10s of ppbv of NH3 were encountered as well. We identified two of their sources as a large fertilizer plant and a cattle farm, and our mixing ratio measurements yielded upper bounds of 350 ± 50 and 0.6 kg NH3 h--1 for their respective momentary source rates. The fast response of the CIMS also allowed us to derive vertical NH3 fluxes within the turbulent boundary layer via eddy covariance, for which we chiefly used the continuous wavelet transform technique. As expected for a region dominated by agriculture, we observed predominantly upward fluxes, implying net NH3 emissions from surface. The corresponding analysis focused on the most suitable flight, which contained two straight-andlevel legs at -300 m above ground. We derived NH3 fluxes between --4 and 18 mol km--2 h--1 for these legs, at an effective spatial resolution of 1-2 km. The analysis demonstrated how flux measurements benefit from suitably arranged flight tracks with sufficiently long straight-and-level legs, and explores the detrimental effect of measurement discontinuities. Following flux footprint estimations, comparison to the NH3 area emissions inventory provided by the US Environmental Protection Agency indicated overall agreement, but also the absence of some sources, for instance the identified cattle farm. Our study concludes that high-precision CIMS measurements are a powerful tool for in-situ measurements of ambient NH3 mixing ratios, and even allow for the airborne mapping of the air-surface exchange of NH3. Antenatal dexamethasone and betamethasone may not be equally efficacious in the prevention of adverse neonatal outcomes. We compared the risks of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and neonatal death among very low birth weight infants who were exposed to dexamethasone, betamethasone, or neither steroid. METHODS. Infants (401-1500 g) in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network were studied. Multivariate logistic regression analyses compared the 3 groups with regard to PVL, IVH, ROP, and neonatal death, adjusting for network center and selected covariates. RESULTS. A total of 3600 infants met entry criteria. Compared with no antenatal steroids, there were trends for a reduced risk for PVL associated with dexamethasone and betamethasone but no difference in risk between dexamethasone and betamethasone. Dexamethasone reduced the risk for IVH and severe IVH, compared with no antenatal steroid exposure. Betamethasone reduced the risk for IVH, severe IVH, and neonatal death, compared with no antenatal steroids. Compared with betamethasone, dexamethasone had a statistically significant increased risk for neonatal death. There were trends for greater risks associated with dexamethasone compared with betamethasone for IVH and severe ROP. CONCLUSIONS. Betamethasone was associated with a reduced risk for neonatal death, with trends of decreased risk for other adverse neonatal outcomes, compared with dexamethasone. It may be in the best interest of neonates to receive betamethasone rather than dexamethasone when available.
