Abstract Estuarine and coastal regions are often characterized by a high variability of suspended sediment concentrations in their waters, which influences dredging projects, contaminant transport, aquaculture and fisheries. Although various three-dimensional open source software are available to model the hydrodynamics of coastal water with a sediment module, the prediction of the fate and transport of cohesive sediments is still far from satisfied due to the lack of an efficient and robust flocculation model to estimate the floc settling velocity and the deposition rate. Single-class and sometimes two-class flocculation models are oversimplified and fail to examine complicated floc size distributions, while quadrature-based or multi-class based flocculation models may be too complicated to be coupled with large scale estuarine or ocean models. Therefore, a three-class population balance model was developed to track the sizes and number concentrations of microflocs, macroflocs and megaflocs, respectively. With the assumption of a fixed size of microflocs and megaflocs, only four tracers are needed when coupled with the open-source TELEMAC system. It enables better settling flux estimates and better addresses the occurrence and concentration of larger megaflocs. This tri-modal flocculation model was validated with two experimental data sets: (1) 1-D settling column tests with the Ems mud and (2) in-situ measurements at the WZ Buoy station on the Belgian coast. Results show that the flocculation properties of cohesive sediments can be reasonably simulated in both environments. It is also found that the number of macroflocs created, when a larger macrofloc breaks up, is a statistical mean value and may not be an integer when applying the model in the field. For stable high-power operation, a new RF window is developed in the S-band linear accelerator (Linac) RF systems of the Pohang Light Source-II (PLS-II) and the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL). The new RF window is designed to mitigate the strength of the electric field at the ceramic disk and also at the waveguide-cavity coupling structure of the conventional RF window. By replacing the pill-box type cavity in the conventional RF window with an overmoded cavity, the electric field component perpendicular to the ceramic disk that caused most of the multipacting breakdowns in the ceramic disk was reduced by an order of magnitude. The reduced electric field at the ceramic disk eliminated the Ti–N coating process on the ceramic surface in the fabrication procedure of the new RF window, preventing the incomplete coating from spoiling the RF transmission and lowering the fabrication cost. The overmoded cavity was coupled with input and output waveguides through dual side-wall coupling irises to reduce the electric field strength at the waveguide-cavity coupling structure and the possibility of mode competitions in the overmoded cavity. A prototype of the new RF window was fabricated and fully tested with the Klystron peak input power, pulse duration and pulse repetition rate of 75 MW, 4.5 μ s and 10 Hz, respectively, at the high-power test stand. The first mass-produced new RF window installed in the PLS-II Linac is running in normal operation mode. No fault is reported to date. Plans are being made to install the new RF window to all S-band accelerator RF modules of the PLS-II and PAL-XFEL Linacs. This new RF window may be applied to the output windows of S-band power sources like Klystron as wells as the waveguide windows of accelerator facilities which operate in S-band. Abstract: Divalent cations have been reported to develop bridges between anionic polyelectrolytes and negatively-charged colloidal particles, thereby enhancing particle flocculation. However, results from this study of kaolinite suspensions dosed with various anionic polyacrylamides (PAMs) reveal that Ca2+ and Mg2+ can lead to colloid stabilization under some conditions. To explain the opposite but coexisting processes of flocculation and stabilization with divalent cations, a conceptual flocculation model with (1) particle-binding divalent cationic bridges between PAM molecules and kaolinite particles and (2) polymer-binding divalent cationic bridges between PAM molecules is proposed. The particle-binding bridges enhanced flocculation and aggregated kaolinite particles in large, easily-settleable flocs whereas the polymer-binding bridges increased steric stabilization by developing polymer layers covering the kaolinite surface. Both the particle-binding and polymer-binding divalent cationic bridges coexist in anionic PAM- and kaolinite-containing suspensions and thus induce the counteracting processes of particle flocculation and stabilization. Therefore, anionic polyelectrolytes in divalent cation-enriched aqueous solutions can sometimes lead to the stabilization of colloidal particles due to the polymer-binding divalent cationic bridges. Abstract: The capabilities of three simplified analytical equations to accurately model electrostatic interactions during proton binding and release by linear anionic polyelectrolytes in aqueous solution were evaluated. The impermeable sphere (IS), Donnan (DN), and cylindrical (CY) electrostatic models were fit to experimental acid–base titration curves of linear polyacrylamide-co-acrylate having ionizable site densities ranging from ca. 10–35%. The titrations were conducted in 0.003–0.12M NaCl solutions and the sum of squared errors from modeled and experimental data was used as a comparative index of each model’s capability. In addition, the relative size of each polyelectrolyte was estimated from its measured specific viscosity and then compared against the values obtained from the fitting procedure for the size parameter that each model contained. Although the IS and DN electrostatic models could be used to obtain reasonably good fits to each titration curve, the size parameter values obtained by each model were not reflective of the actual polyelectrolyte sizes, indicating that the models had limited physical meaning and that the size parameter was essentially just an additional fitting parameter in each model. In contrast, the CY model was not only more effective in its ability to fit the titration data but also provided a better physical representation of the polyelectrolyte size. Therefore, for polyelectrolytes that remain essentially linear or are only loosely coiled such that counter ions are free to travel throughout the polymer structure, we conclude that the CY model and its morphological representation of a cylindrical polyelectrolyte are more valid and realistic than the IS and DN models and their representation of polyelectrolytes as spheres. Abstract: Bimodal flocculation of marine and estuarine sediments describes the aggregation and breakage process in which dense microflocs and floppy macroflocs change their relative mass fraction and develop a bimodal floc size distribution. To simulate bimodal flocculation of such sediments, a Two-Class Population Balance Equation (TCPBE), which includes both size-fixed microflocs and size-varying macroflocs, was developed. The new TCPBE was tested by a model-data fitting analysis with experimental data from 1-D column tests, in comparison with the simple Single-Class PBE (SCPBE) and the elaborate Multi-Class PBE (MCPBE). Results showed that the TCPBE was the simplest model that is capable of simulating the major aspects of the bimodal flocculation of marine and estuarine sediments. Therefore, the TCPBE can be implemented in a large-scale multi-dimensional flocculation model with least computational cost and used as a prototypic model for researchers to investigate complicated cohesive sediment transport in marine and estuarine environments. In this paper, the design, construction, and test procedure of a closing-switch prototype based on thyristors are described. In particular, details are given about the design criteria and the triggering board architecture, which is a high-side-biased self-supplied unit using electrical energy derived from a local snubber network for the gate drive. The structure guarantees a hard firing gate pulse for the required high-dI/dt application. Furthermore, the results of the prototype tests are presented and discussed. The stack assembly has a holding voltage of 6.5 kV and is used for switching a series resonant circuit with a ringing frequency of 12 kHz for a pulsed inductive plasma source. Abstract: An optimal shape design approach is presented for a subsonic S-shaped intake geometry using aerodynamic sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis is performed for the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations coupled with two-equation turbulence models using a discrete adjoint method. For code validation, the result of the flow solver is compared with experimental data and other computational results. Through the study on turbulence models and grid refinement, results from several turbulence models are compared and the minimal number of grid points yielding an accurate numerical solution is obtained. And, the adjoint sensitivity code is also validated by the comparison with complex step derivative results. To obtain a sufficient and flexible design space, NURBS equations are employed as a geometric representation and a new grid modification technique, Least Square NURBS Grid Approximation is applied. With the verified flow solver, sensitivity analysis code and geometric modification technique, the optimization of the S-shaped intake is carried out and the enhancement of overall intake performance is achieved. In addition, the off-design performance of a designed S-shaped intake is tested to confirm the robustness of the current design approach. As a result, the capability and efficiency of the present design tools are successfully demonstrated in three-dimensional high Reynolds subsonic intake design. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Microdischarges in xenon have been generated in a pressure range of 400-1013 mbar with a fixed flow rate of 100 sccm. These microdischarges are obtained from three metallic capillary tubes in series for excimer emission. Total discharge voltage is thrice as large as that of a single capillary discharge tube at current levels of up to 12 mA. Total spectral irradiance of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission also increases significantly compared to that of the single capillary discharge. Further, the irradiance of the VUV emission is strongly dependent on pressure as well as the discharge current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intense xenon vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission is observed from a high-pressure capillary cathode microdischarge in direct current operation, by superimposing a high-voltage pulse of 50 ns duration. Under stagnant gas conditions, the total VUV light intensity increases linearly with pressure from 400 to 1013 mbar for a fixed voltage pulse. At fixed pressure, however, the VUV light intensity increases superlinearly with voltage pulse height ranging from 08 to 2.8 kV. Gains in emission intensity are obtained by inducing gas flow through the capillary cathode, presumably because of excimer dimer survival due to gas cooling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microplasmas at high pressure have been the authors’ special interest for its practical relevance to the development of a switch. They concentrated on repetitive switching with a possibility to exceed the up to now known values for plasma closing switches and simultaneously maintaining a subnanosecond rise time of the switched pulses at a load. They examined several parameters for this purpose such as the electrode gap spacing, the electrode geometry, the gas type, the gas pressure, and including the applied voltage and current rating to operate these plasmas. Abstract The Floc Size Distributions (FSDs) of biomineral suspended particles are of great importance to understand the dynamics of bio-mediated Suspended Particulate Matters (SPMs). Field observations were investigated at Station MOW1 in Belgian coastal waters (southern North Sea) during two typical periods with abundant and reduced biomass. In addition, the Shen et al. (2018) [Water Res. Vol 145, pp 473–486] multi-class population balance flocculation model was extended to address the occurrence of suspended microflocs, macroflocs and megaflocs during these contrasting periods. The microflocs are treated as elementary particles that constitute macroflocs or megaflocs. The FSD is represented by the size and mass fraction of each particle group, which corresponds to a temporal and spatial varying mass weighted settling velocity. The representative sizes of macroflocs and megaflocs are unfixed and migrated between classes mainly due to the effects of turbulent shear, differential settling and biofilm growth. The growth of an aggregate because of bio-activities is allotted to each elementary particle. It is further hypothesized that the growth kinetics of biomineral particles due to biofilm coating follows the logistic equation. This simple bio-flocculation model has been successfully coupled in the open source TELEMAC modeling system with five passive tracers in a quasi-1D vertical case. Within an intra-tide scale, the settling velocity (w s) is large during slack tides while it is small during maximum current velocities because of variations in turbulence intensities. Nonetheless, the w s may be largely underestimated when the biological effect is neglected. For a seasonal pattern, the w s is higher in biomass-rich periods in May than in biomass-poor periods in October. While the mean sizes of megaflocs are close during the two periods, the macroflocs during algae bloom periods are more abundant with a larger mean size. Fluorescence spectroscopy has demonstrated its potential for assessing organic matter (OM) –related water quality (WQ) and identifying anthropogenically driven pollution sources within watersheds. This study involves a comparison of spatial variations in general WQ parameters and dissolved organic matter (DOM) fluorescence characteristics between two adjacent watersheds characterized by disparate land uses (i.e., urban and agricultural). The investigation encompasses both rain and non-rain events to evaluate the diagnostic utility of DOM fluorescence in monitoring WQ fluctuations. In the urban watershed, variations were predominantly influenced by wastewater effluents, leading to noticeable changes exclusively downstream from sewage treatment facilities, regardless of distinct hydrological conditions. In contrast, the agricultural watershed exhibited more extensive spatial variations, suggesting a prevalence of non-point source pollution stemming from agricultural and livestock activities. The humic-like fluorescent components (C1 and C2) exhibited a robust positive correlation with total organic carbon (TOC), unaffected by varying hydrological conditions and catchment land use. Conversely, the assessment of nutrient levels utilizing the protein-like component (C3) was considerably influenced by catchment land use. A stronger positive correlation between C3 and total nitrogen (TN) was observed in the urban watershed compared to the agricultural watershed. Moreover, the fluorescence index (FI) demonstrated a substantial positive relationship with TN in both watersheds, indicating the dominance of microbial sources in nitrogen pollution for both watersheds. No significant differences were found in the variation trends of WQ and DOM fluorescence between non-rain and rain events. This study emphasizes that catchment land use plays a pivotal role in influencing the associations between fluorescence indices and WQ parameters. This paper proposes a flyback-circuit-based design of a trigger circuit for a high-power gas switch. By incorporating a flyback circuit in a high-power gas switch, it is possible to generate a high step-up ratio and high-voltage pulse by using a transformer. Furthermore, simple trigger circuit having the minimum possible number of components (transformer and switch) can be realized. When an inductor is used as an energy storage element, energy is stored as a current source, and thus, the element can operate reliably when low impedance exists between the trigger node of the switch after triggering. According to the fundamental operating principle of a flyback circuit, the proposed trigger circuit is designed considering the maximum trigger voltage and energy required for a high-power gas switch. To verify the proposed design procedure and feasibility of the trigger circuit, a compact trigger circuit (7.5 kV, 1.3 mJ/pulse) is simulated using the PSpice program and implemented. Based on this compact circuit, a trigger circuit (20 kV, 100 mJ/pulse) for a triggered vacuum switch (TVS) is developed, and the tests with an actual TVS (3.3 kJ) are carried out. Although spectroscopic methods provide a fast and cost-effective means of monitoring dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in natural and engineered water systems, the prediction accuracy of these methods is limited by the complex relationship between optical properties and DOC concentration. In this study, we developed DOC prediction models using multiple linear/log-linear regression and feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) and investigated the effectiveness of spectroscopic properties, such as fluorescence intensity and UV absorption at 254 nm (UV 254), as predictors. Optimum predictors were identified based on correlation analysis to construct models using single and multiple predictors. We compared the peak-picking and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) methods for selecting appropriate fluorescence wavelengths. Both methods had similar prediction capability (p-values >0.05), suggesting PARAFAC was not necessary for choosing fluorescence predictors. Fluorescence peak T was identified as a more accurate predictor than UV 254. Combining UV 254 and multiple fluorescence peak intensities as predictors further improved the prediction capability of the models. The ANN models outperformed the linear/log-linear regression models with multiple predictors, achieving higher prediction accuracy (peak-picking: R2 = 0.8978, RMSE = 0.3105 mg/L; PARAFAC: R2 = 0.9079, RMSE = 0.2989 mg/L). These findings suggest the potential to develop a real-time DOC concentration sensor based on optical properties using an ANN for signal processing. Abstract The Floc Size Distributions (FSDs) of suspended fine-grained sediment flocs play a prime role to estimate their own fate and the transport of contaminates attached to the flocs. However, developing an efficient flocculation model that is capable of simulating continuous and multimodal FSDs is still a challenge. Recently, the population balance equation solved by the Quadrature-Based Method of Moments (QBMM) with lognormal kernel density functions has been developed to investigate the aggregation and breakage processes. It coincides with some recent observations which describe a measured FSD in coastal waters with a set of constituted lognormal distributions. The newly developed lognormal QBMM was tested with several ideal flocculation kinetic kernels, none of which, however, was used for interpreting cohesive sediment dynamics. Therefore, it raised our interest to evaluate the model performance for fine-grained sediments in shear turbulence dominated environments. In this study, additional validations against two kaolinite laboratory experiments were tested in the framework of the extended QBMM. It is hypothesized that these subordinate lognormal distributions share the same value of standard deviation. Different from the previous methods, the common standard deviation is determined empirically to reduce the number of tracers and better represent the FSDs. With sediment flocculation kinetics, the predicted FSDs reasonably reproduce the FSDs observed in both the mixing chamber and the settling column experiments. Despite the lacking of explicit descriptions of microbial effects at the current stage, this model has the potential to be implemented into large-scale particle transport models and deserves a more in-depth study in the future. • The effects of anionic, cationic and neutral organic matters on the aggregation of microplastics are investigated. • All of the organic matters show positive effects on the growth of biofilm-coated microplastic aggregates. • The two-class population balance model is used to track the small and large microplastic subgroups under turbulence. Biofilm-coated microplastics are omnipresent in aquatic environments, carrying different organic matter (OM) that in turn influences the flocculation and settling of microplastic aggregates. In this study, the effects of chitosan, guar gum, humic acid, and xanthan gum on the flocculation of anthropogenic microplastics are examined under controlled shear through the mixing chamber experiments. The results show that all of the selected OMs have positive effects on biofilm culturing and thus enhance the growth of microplastic flocs, with more evident promoting effects for cationic and neutral OMs (i.e., chitosan and guar gum) than anionic OMs (i.e., humic acid and xanthan). No critical shear rate is observed in the size vs. shear relationship based on our measurements. In addition, the quadrature-based two-class population balance model is employed to track the development of bimodal floc size distributions (FSDs) composed of small and large microplastic flocs. The model predictions show reasonable agreement with the observed FSDs. The largest error of settling flux from the two-class model is 7.8% in contrast with the reference value measured by the camera-based FSDs with 30 bins. This study highlights the role of different OMs on microplastic flocculation and indicates that a two-class model may be sufficient to describe microplastic transport processes in estuaries. • We studied flocculation of microalgae- and clay-containing suspensions. • Investigations were done in different microalgal growth phases. • A two-class flocculation kinetic model and Bayesian calibration were applied. • Effect of organic matter secreted by algae on flocculation kinetics was evaluated. • Distinct flocculation mechanisms were identified in different microalgal growth phases. Interplays between microalgae and clay minerals enhance biologically mediated flocculation, thereby affecting the sedimentation and transportation of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in water and benthic environments. This interaction forms larger flocs with a higher settling velocity and enhances SPM sinking. The aim of this study was to investigate the flocculation kinetics of microalgae and clay in suspension and to elucidate the mechanisms associated with such interactions. Standard jar test experiments were conducted using various mixtures of kaolinite and microalgal samples from batch cultures (Chlorella vulgaris) to estimate biologically mediated flocculation kinetics. The organic matter (OM) composition secreted by the microalgae was characterized using a liquid chromatography - organic carbon detection system, and quantitative analysis of transparent exopolymer particles was conducted separately. A two-class flocculation kinetic model, based on the interaction between flocculi and flocs, was also adopted to quantitatively analyze the experimental data from flocculation. Results from the flocculation kinetic tests and OM analyses, in association with other data analyses (i.e., floc size distribution and flocculation kinetic model), showed that flocculation increased with OM concentration during the growth phase (10–20 d). However, on day 23 during the early stationary phase, flocculation kinetics started decreasing and substantially declined on day 30, even though the amount of OM (mainly biopolymers) continued to increase. Our results indicate that an adequate quantity of biopolymers produced by the microalgal cells in the growth phase enhanced floc-to-floc attachment and hence flocculation kinetics. In contrast, an excessive quantity of biopolymers and humic substances in the stationary phase enhanced the formation of polymeric backbone structures and flocculation via scavenging particles but simultaneously increased steric stabilization with the production of a large number of fragmented particles. Flocculation is a key process for controlling the fate and transport of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in water environments and has received considerable attention in the field of water science (e.g., oceanography, limnology, and hydrology), remaining an active area of research. The research on flocculation has been conducted to elucidate the SPM dynamics and to diagnose various environmental issues. The flocculation, sedimentation, and transportation of SPM are closely linked to the compositional and structural properties of flocs. In fact, flocs are highly heterogeneous in terms of composition. However, the lack of comprehensive research on floc composition and structure has led to misconceptions regarding the temporal and spatial dynamics of SPM. This review summarizes the current understanding of the heterogeneous composition of flocs (e.g., minerals, organic matter, metals, microplastic, engineered nanoparticles) and its effect on their structure and on their fate and transport within aquatic environments.
