Mn-based materials show potential as next-generation candidates for lithium-ion battery (LIB) cathode materials owing to their cost-effectiveness, high energy density, and high power density. However, during repetitive charging/discharging processes, these materials undergo cation migration, structural evolution, and phase transition, resulting in sluggish kinetics, substantial voltage decay, and capacity degradation. Herein, we present a Mn-based partially disordered spinel cathode material decorated with a cation-disordered rock salt (DRX) phase-enriched surface to mitigate this voltage and capacity degradation. We demonstrate that a DRX-rich surface layer successfully suppresses the degradation associated with the unfavorable phase transition from the cubic spinel to tetragonal spinel phase. Instead, by harnessing a gradual phase transition from the rock salt to cubic spinel phase concentrated on the surface region, the capacity and voltage increase, delaying the degradation and leading to improved capacity retention. Our findings suggest a strategic approach to exploit Mn-based cathode materials for developing LIBs with superior cyclability and further highlight the potential of controlling the spatial distribution of each phase to enhance the battery performance in multi-phasic cathode materials. Recently, there have been emerging demands for new transportation modes, such as personal rapid transit (PRT), to improve the connectivity of first and last mile travel. Advancement of ICT and growing concerns over environmental issues reinforce such demands through which specific transportation modes can satisfy the need of each individual for short-distance trips. Although PRT has received particular attention for short-distance trips, it is true that recent approaches have been developed to analyze the behavior of travelers for mid- to long-distance trips that are not relevant for short-distance trips. This study proposed a suitable approach using logistic regression models that could assist the understanding of features which determine mode choice in a short-distance trip. The mode choice for PRT in short-distance trips in this study was based on the data from the survey. After considering various factors, it was apparent that the purpose of the trip together with weather conditions impacted significantly on travelers' mode choices to PRT in short-distance trips. Although the form of toll facilities has evolved, a review of how they have been used in the United States since its early colonial period suggests four conditions that appear to have influenced the likelihood of tolls being used to support construction or maintenance activities: the relative stability of revenue streams from user fees compared to the stability of revenues from a general tax; the availability of technologies to collect tolls without degrading the user's experience; the presence of design innovations for toll facilities (compared to non-toll facilities); and the relative size of market benefits (for toll facilities) compared to societal benefits (for non-toll facilities). Even though revenue is one motivation for having a toll facility, other factors help explain why the popularity of toll facilities has risen or fallen. During the late 1800s, the network benefits of a smooth surface appealed to a large group (bicyclists) and generated a popular demand for public facilities. Yet in the early 1940s, another innovation--consistency of geometric design--spurred a market among paying customers for limited access highways. Collectively, such factors support five periods that characterize different public attitudes toward toll facilities: colonial/early federal period (from 1607 to 1775), turnpike era (from circa 1792 to 1845), toll reluctance era (from 1879 to 1939), post-World War II era (from 1939 to 1963), and renewed interest in tolling period (from circa 1976 to the present). Recently, limited available resources for physical capacity expansion have generated supports for short-term operational improvements. Yet, only a few studies have dealt with evaluating these operational strategies effectively within the traditional transportation planning process even though suitable operational strategies impact to not only specific corridors or regions but also the whole transportation network. This is because it is generally perceived that integrating travel demand models with operational analysis approaches is quite difficult due to different constraints, modeling structures, and required data sets. In this regard, the concept of methodological framework to evaluate operational strategies with travel demand models is developed and validated by the proper case study (i.e., high occupancy toll lanes deployment in the Hampton Roads area in Virginia, US) in this research. The proposed framework consists of three major components: (i) the selection of an appropriate operational analysis approach, (ii) the disaggregation of daily traffic volumes to peak period volumes, and (iii) the alignment of modeling elements between the travel demand model and operational tool. Key contributions from this research are that (i) the proposed methodology enables the evaluation of travel behavioral changes without microscopic simulation, especially in terms of capturing network flow pattern changes caused by behavioral shifts after operational strategy deployment, (ii) the proposed framework eliminates assumptions required when only operational tools are used to evaluate operational strategies, (iii) the disaggregation method of a daily trip distribution matrix into peak period matrices by using survey data are developed, (iv) specific details influencing integration in terms of data types, peak period link capacity, volume-delay functions, and link impedance are identified. Consequently, even though this research still has some limitations (e.g., inherent weakness of travel demand models), this can be a starting point to develop more detailed guidelines as well as a good reference for practitioners and researchers who wish to evaluate operation strategies within transportation planning process. Cependant, meme si les bonnes strategies operationnelles ont non seulement un impact sur les regions ou les corridors specifiques, mais aussi sur l'ensemble d'un reseau de transport, seules quelques etudes se sont interessees a revaluation efficace de ces strategies operationnelles dans le cadre du processus habituel de planification des transports. En effet, on considere habituellement que la combinaison de modeles de demande en voyage avec des methodes d'analyse operationnelles est tres difficile en raison de diverses contraintes, structures de modelisation et ensembles de donnees indispensables. Ainsi, dans la presente etude, un concept de cadre de travail methodologique permettant d'evaluer des strategies operationnelles associees a des modeles de demande en voyage est concu et valide a l'aide d'une etude de cas pertinente (c.-a-d. la mise en place de voies reservees aux vehicules multioccupants a acces special tarife dans la region de Hampton Roads, en Viginie, aux Etats-Unis). Le cadre de travail propose comporte trois principaux elements: (i) le choix d'une methode d'analyse operationnelle appropriee, (ii) la decomposition des volumes de trafic quotidiens en volumes en periodes de pointe et (iii) l'alignement des elements de modelisation sur le modele de demande en voyage et sur l'outil operationnel. The speeds of traffic and freeway throughputs at the merge, diverge, and weaving areas are reduced significantly due to vehicle lane changes and increased traffic volumes. This study proposes a solution, referred to as split design (i.e. split merge, diverge, and weaving). The key concept is to make geometric changes to the existing ramp designs to create two merge or diverge points, such that potential conflicts of the mainline and ramp traffic can be distributed apart spatially. This potentially decreases unnecessary interactions between the mainline and ramp vehicles. This study also uses microscopic traffic simulation to assess operational efficiency of the proposed alternative geometric design; and to develop managerial insights for state DOTs to better design, enhance, and manage their freeway systems in the future. We find that, overall, the split design can potentially increase throughput by 6% to 9% and reduce delay by 35% to 80% across different scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The conflicts among motorists entering a signalized intersection with the red light indication have become a national safety issue. Because of its sensitivity, efforts have been made to investigate the possible causes and effectiveness of countermeasures using comparison sites and/or before-and-after studies. Nevertheless, these approaches are ineffective when comparison sites cannot be found, or crash data sets are not readily available or not reliable for statistical analysis. Considering the random nature of red light running (RLR) crashes, an inventive approach regardless of data availability is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of each countermeasure face to face.Method: The aims of this research are to (1) review erstwhile literature related to red light running and traffic safety models; (2) propose a practical methodology for evaluation of RLR countermeasures with a microscopic traffic simulation model and surrogate safety assessment model (SSAM); (3) apply the proposed methodology to actual signalized intersection in Virginia, with the most prevalent scenarios-increasing the yellow signal interval duration, installing an advance warning sign, and an RLR camera; and (4) analyze the relative effectiveness by RLR frequency and the number of conflicts (rear-end and crossing).Results: All scenarios show a reduction in RLR frequency (-7.8, -45.5, and -52.4%, respectively), but only increasing the yellow signal interval duration results in a reduced total number of conflicts (-11.3%; a surrogate safety measure of possible RLR-related crashes). An RLR camera makes the greatest reduction (-60.9%) in crossing conflicts (a surrogate safety measure of possible angle crashes), whereas increasing the yellow signal interval duration results in only a 12.8% reduction of rear-end conflicts (a surrogate safety measure of possible rear-end crash).Conclusions: Although increasing the yellow signal interval duration is advantageous because this reduces the total conflicts (a possibility of total RLR-related crashes), each countermeasure shows different effects by RLR-related conflict types that can be referred to when making a decision. Given that each intersection has different RLR crash issues, evaluated countermeasures are directly applicable to enhance the cost and time effectiveness, according to the situation of the target intersection. In addition, the proposed methodology is replicable at any site that has a dearth of crash data and/or comparison sites in order to test any other countermeasures (both engineering and enforcement countermeasures) for RLR crashes. We describe the electrochemical α-amidoalkylation of γ-lactams based on transition-metal-free cross-coupling via hydrogen atom transfer. The highly selective hydrogen atom transfer process allows for a broad substrate scope including both inter- and intramolecular reactions. Also, the construction of quaternary centers was realized by a double hydrogen atom transfer protocol to afford spirocycles. Detailed mechanistic studies including experimental and computational studies are provided to support the reaction pathway.
