Abstract

In the design of a rotary-type magnetic refrigerator, a high field of a coaxial magnet is desired. Typically, a high-field design can be achieved with a small duty cycle, which might not be optimized from the viewpoint of the thermal hydraulics of a magnetic refrigerator. In this work, a numerical simulation analysis of a graded coaxial magnet designed using a COMSOL program for a rotary-type active magnetic refrigeration (AMR) system was performed. The magnet structures are based on neodymium–iron–boron permanent magnets with thin gadolinium (Gd) and gadolinium-terbium alloy (Gd-Tb) plates as AMR materials. For a rotary-type magnetic cooling system, from the thermal–hydraulic point of view, the best duty cycle of a coaxial magnet should be 50% if the magnetic field can be kept constant during the period of duty cycles. However, the simulation calculation shows a serious reduction in the magnetic field strength at higher duty cycles, resulting in lower magnetic cooling efficiency. After considering the thermos-hydraulic part, the optimized duty cycle is around 30% in the case of a temperature span of 8 K between the hot and cold ends on a rotary-type magnetic cooling system. By applying graded Gd-Tb alloy along the flow direction, the performance of magnetic refrigeration improves significantly. 10. Adsorption and dynamics of Si atoms at the monolayer Pb/Si(111) surface

Abstract

In this work, we studied the adsorption behavior of deposited Si atoms along with their diffusion and other dynamic processes on a Pb monolayer-covered Si(111) surface from 125-230 K using a variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The Pb-covered Si(111) surface form a low-symmetry row-like structure in this temperature range and the Si atoms bind favorably to two specific on-top sites (T1A and T1B) on the trimer row after deposition at the sample temperature of 125 K. The Si atoms were immobile at low temperatures and started to switch between the two neighboring T1A and T1B sites within the same trimer when the temperature was raised to 150 K. When the temperature was raised above 160 K, the adsorbed Si atoms could hop to other trimers along the same trimer row. Below 170 K, short hops to adjacent trimers dominated, but long hops dominated at temperatures above 170 K. The activation energy and prefactor for the Si atoms diffusion were derived through analysis of continuous-time imaging at temperatures from 160-174 K. In addition, irreversible aggregation of single Si atoms into Si clusters started to occur at the phase boundaries or defective sites at temperatures above 170 K. This study provides crucial information for understanding the very initial stage of nucleation and growth behavior of epitaxial Si layers on a Pb-covered Si(111) surface. In addition, our study provides strong evidence for breaking in the mirror symmetry in the Pb-covered structure, which has implication for the atomic model of this controversial structure.

Abstract

Single-atom-supported metal oxides have attracted extensive interest in energy catalysis, offering a promising avenue for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution. This study presents a facile synthesis of single-atom Fe-modified Bi2WO6 photocatalysts. By carefully tuning the Fe ratios, the 1.5Fe-Bi2WO6 sample demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic efficiency in CO2 to CO reduction (36.78 μmol g−1). Additionally, an outstanding NO removal performance is also achieved through this photocatalyst with an impressively low conversion of toxic NO2 at just 0.37%. The reaction intermediates and mechanisms governing the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into CO are elucidated using in situ DRIFTS and in situ XAS techniques. Regarding NO removal, the introduction of Fe single-atoms, along with induced oxygen vacancies, plays a pivotal role in facilitating the transformation of NO and NO2 into nitrate by stabilizing NO and NO2 species. Mechanistic insights into photocatalytic NO oxidation are garnered through scavenger trapping and EPR experiments employing DMPO. This study emphasizes single-atom-supported metal oxide's potential in sustainable chemistry and air purification, providing a promising solution for urgent environmental challenges. 12. Idealism, Professionalism and the Origins of the Workers' Educational Association: Revisiting the 'Oxford Report' of 1908

Abstract

This paper uses the 1908 "Oxford Report," a founding document for the Workers' Educational Association, as a window onto the internal contradictions of the university adult education movement, an issue that has been neglected by historians of education. Examining the early history of the WEA shows that while the movement was inspired by Oxford Idealism and set itself the aim of democratising higher education, it also drew support from people who intended to professionalise the university by introducing the principles of trained expertise and selection by merit. The confluence of Idealism and professionalism resulted in a ground-breaking but inconsistent educational programme outlined in the "Oxford Report." This paper suggests that the attempt to simultaneously democratise and professionalise higher education was untenable and foreshadowed later tensions within the WEA movement.

Abstract

This study examines the practical application of Oxford Idealism to education reform and the adult education movement. According to Idealist philosophy, enlightened and active citizenship was the cornerstone of a participatory democracy. This thesis thus explores how Oxford Idealists used the Workers' Educational Association (WEA) to pursue the aim of cultivating good citizenship and forming a common purpose for the future society they wished to see emerging. The WEA, founded in 1903, embodied the Idealist vision by promoting its two-fold practices: first, it organised university tutorial classes to foster mutual learning and fellowship between intellectuals and workers; second, it campaigned for a state-funded 'educational highway', from nursery to university, so that every citizen would have the opportunity to receive the kind of liberal education which had hitherto been limited to upper and middle classes. By exploring the development of the dual initiative, this thesis examines the achievement and limitations of the Idealist project. In particular, it investigates whether and how this pursuit, in the long run, contributed to the rise of professionalism, a trend which has been ascribed to the efforts of Idealists but which in many ways contradicted the ideal of participatory democracy. In so doing, this thesis explains why the influence of Oxford Idealism-this highly moralistic philosophy which inspired a generation of intellectuals and politicians and lent a distinctive flavour to British public policy at the beginning of the twentieth century-gradually ebbed in the public domain.

Abstract

Macrophage activation by the proinflammatory cytokine interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) is a critical component of the host innate response to bacterial pathogenesis. However, the precise nature of the IFN-gamma-induced activation pathway is not known. Here we show using genome-wide expression and chromatin-binding profiling that IFN-gamma induces the expression of many nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial respiratory chain machinery via activation of the nuclear receptor ERR alpha (estrogen-related receptor alpha, NR3B1). Studies with macrophages lacking ERR alpha demonstrate that it is required for induction of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and efficient clearance of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) in response to IFN-gamma. As a result, mice lacking ERR alpha are susceptible to LM infection, a phenotype that is localized to bone marrow-derived cells. Furthermore, we found that IFN-gamma-induced activation of ERR alpha depends on coactivator PGC-1 beta (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 beta), which appears to be a direct target for the IFN-gamma/STAT-1 signaling cascade. Thus, ERR alpha and PGC-1 beta act together as a key effector of IFN-gamma-induced mitochondrial ROS production and host defense.
