We present the development of a decay energy spectroscopy (DES) method for the analysis of radioactive impurities using magnetic microcalorimeters (MMCs). The DES system was designed to analyze radionuclides, such as Ra-226, Th-228, and their daughter nuclides, in materials like copper, commonly used in rare-event search experiments. We tested the DES system with a gold foil absorber measuring 20x20x0.05 mm^3, large enough to accommodate a significant drop of source solution. Using this large absorber and an MMC sensor, we conducted a long-term measurement over ten days of live time, requiring 11 ADR cooling cycles. The combined spectrum achieved an energy resolution of 45 keV FWHM, sufficient to identify most alpha and DES peaks of interest. Specific decay events from radionuclide contaminants in the absorber were identified. This experiment confirms the capability of the DES system to measure alpha decay chains of Ra-226 and Th-228, offering a promising method for radio-impurity evaluation in ultra-low background experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The AMoRE collaboration searches for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo using molybdate scintillating crystals via low temperature thermal calorimetric detection. The early phases of the experiment, AMoRE-pilot and AMoRE-I, have demonstrated competitive discovery potential. Presently, the AMoRE-II experiment, featuring a large detector array with about 90 kg of $^{100}$Mo isotope, is under construction.This paper discusses the baseline design and characterization of the lithium molybdate cryogenic calorimeters to be used in the AMoRE-II detector modules. The results from prototype setups that incorporate new housing structures and two different crystal masses (316 g and 517 - 521 g), operated at 10 mK temperature, show energy resolutions (FWHM) of 7.55 - 8.82 keV at the 2.615 MeV $^{208}$Tl $\gamma$ line, and effective light detection of 0.79 - 0.96 keV/MeV. The simultaneous heat and light detection enables clear separation of alpha particles with a discrimination power of 12.37 - 19.50 at the energy region around $^6$Li(n, $\alpha$)$^3$H with Q-value = 4.785 MeV. Promising detector performances were demonstrated at temperatures as high as 30 mK, which relaxes the temperature constraints for operating the large AMoRE-II array.

AMoRE-II aims to search for neutrinoless double beta decay with an array of 423 Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals operating in the cryogenic system as the main phase of the Advanced Molybdenum-based Rare process Experiment (AMoRE). AMoRE has been planned to operate in three phases: AMoRE-pilot, AMoRE-I, and AMoRE-II. AMoRE-II is currently being installed at the Yemi Underground Laboratory, located approximately 1000 meters deep in Jeongseon, Korea. The goal of AMoRE-II is to reach up to $T^{0\nu\beta\beta}_{1/2}$ $\sim$ 6 $\times$ 10$^{26}$ years, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass of 15 - 29 meV, covering all the inverted mass hierarchy regions. To achieve this, the background level of the experimental configurations and possible background sources of gamma and beta events should be well understood. We have intensively performed Monte Carlo simulations using the GEANT4 toolkit in all the experimental configurations with potential sources. We report the estimated background level that meets the 10$^{-4}$counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr) requirement for AMoRE-II in the region of interest (ROI) and show the projected half-life sensitivity based on the simulation study.

A brain-machine interface (BMI) based on electroencephalography (EEG) can overcome the movement deficits for patients and real-world applications for healthy people. Ideally, the BMI system detects user movement intentions transforms them into a control signal for a robotic arm movement. In this study, we made progress toward user intention decoding and successfully classified six different reaching movements of the right arm in the movement execution (ME). Notably, we designed an experimental environment using robotic arm movement and proposed a convolutional neural network architecture (CNN) with inception block for robust classify executed movements of the same limb. As a result, we confirmed the classification accuracies of six different directions show 0.45 for the executed session. The results proved that the proposed architecture has approximately 6~13% performance increase compared to its conventional classification models. A brain-computer interface (BCI) is used not only to control external devices for healthy people but also to rehabilitate motor functions for motor-disabled patients. Decoding movement intention is one of the most significant aspects for performing arm movement tasks using brain signals. Decoding movement execution (ME) from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals have shown high performance in previous works, however movement imagination (MI) paradigm-based intention decoding has so far failed to achieve sufficient accuracy. In this study, we focused on a robust MI decoding method with transfer learning for the ME and MI paradigm. We acquired EEG data related to arm reaching for 3D directions. We proposed a BCI-transfer learning method based on a Relation network (BTRN) architecture. Decoding performances showed the highest performance compared to conventional works. We confirmed the possibility of the BTRN architecture to contribute to continuous decoding of MI using ME datasets., Comment: 5 pages, accepted by ICASSP 2020

Entropy production (EP) is known as a fundamental quantity for measuring the irreversibility of processes in thermal equilibrium and states far from equilibrium. In stochastic thermodynamics, the EP becomes more visible in terms of the probability density functions of the trajectories of a particle in the state space. Inspired by a previous result that complex networks can serve as state spaces, we consider a data packet transport problem on complex networks. Entropy is produced owing to the complexity of pathways as the packet travels back and forth between two nodes. The EPs are exactly enumerated along the shortest paths between every pair of nodes, and the functional form of the EP distribution is determined by extreme value analysis. The asymptote of the accumulated EP distribution is found to follow the Gumbel distribution.

Advances of modern sensing and sequencing technologies generate a deluge of high dimensional space-temporal physiological and next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. Physiological traits are observed either as continuous random functions, or on a dense grid and referred to as function-valued traits. Both physiological and NGS data are highly correlated data with their inherent order, spacing, and functional nature which are ignored by traditional summary-based univariate and multivariate regression methods designed for quantitative genetic analysis of scalar trait and common variants. To capture morphological and dynamic features of the data and utilize their dependent structure, we propose a functional linear model (FLM) in which a trait curve is modeled as a response function, the genetic variation in a genomic region or gene is modeled as a functional predictor, and the genetic effects are modeled as a function of both time and genomic position (FLMF) for genetic analysis of function-valued trait with both GWAS and NGS data. By extensive simulations, we demonstrate that the FLMF has the correct type 1 error rates and much higher power to detect association than the existing methods. The FLMF is applied to sleep data from Starr County health studies where oxygen saturation were measured in 22,670 seconds on average for 833 individuals. We found 65 genes that were significantly associated with oxygen saturation functional trait with P-values ranging from 2.40E-06 to 2.53E-21. The results clearly demonstrate that the FLMF substantially outperforms the traditional genetic models with scalar trait.
