The local electronic and atomic structures of the high-quality single crystal of SrFeO3-{delta} ({delta}~0.19) were studied using temperature-dependent x-ray absorption and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) to investigate the origin of anisotropic resistivity in the ab-plane and along the c-axis close to the region of thermal hysteresis (near temperature for susceptibility maximum, Tm~78 K). All experiments herein were conducted during warming and cooling processes. The Fe L3,2-edge X-ray linear dichrois results show that during cooling from room temperature to below the transition temperature, the unoccupied Fe 3d eg states remain in persistently out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2 orbitals. In contrast, in the warming process below the transition temperature, they change from 3d3z2-r2 to in-plane 3dx2-y2 orbitals. The nearest-neighbor (NN) Fe-O bond lengths also exhibit anisotropic behavior in the ab-plane and along the c-axis below Tm. The anisotropic NN Fe-O bond lengths and Debye-Waller factors stabilize the in-plane Fe 3dx2-y2 and out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2 orbitals during warming and cooling, respectively. Additionally, a VB-PES study further confirms that a relative band gap opens at low temperature in both the ab-plane and along the c-axis, providing the clear evidence of the charge-density-wave nature of SrFeO3-{delta} ({delta}~ 0.19) single crystal., Comment: 45 pages, 7 figures

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) Fe K-edge spectra of the FeSex (x=1-0.8) single crystals cleaved in situ in vacuum reveal characteristic Fe 4sp states, a lattice distortion and the Se K-edge spectra point to a strong Fe 3d-Se 4p hybridization giving rise to itinerant charge carriers. A formal charge of ~1.8+ for Fe and ~2.2- for Se were evaluated from these spectra in the FeSex (x=0.88). The charge balance between Fe and Se is assigned itinerant electrons located in the Fe-Se hybridization bond. As x decreases the 4p hole count increases and a crystal structure distortion is observed that in turn causes the Fe separation in the ab plane change from 4p orbital to varying (modulating) coordination. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements also show a slight increase in lattice parameters as x decreases (increasing Se deficiency).

Anisotropic Fe K-edge and As K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectrum (XANES) measurements on superconducting (T_c = 52 K) (Sm_{0.95}La_{0.05})FeAs(O_{0.85}F_{0.15}) field-aligned microcrystalline powder are presented. The angular dependence of Fe pre-edge peak (dipole transition of Fe-1s electrons to Fe-3d/As-4p hybrid bands) relative to the tetragonal ab-plane of aligned powder indicates larger density of state (DOS) along the c-axis, and is consistent with the LDA band structure calculation. The anisotropic Fe K-edge spectra exhibit a chemical shift to lower energy compared to FeO which are closely related to the itinerant character of Fe^{2+}-3d^6 orbitals. The anisotropic As K-edge spectra are more or less the mirror images of Fe K-edge due to the symmetrical Fe-As hybridiztion in the FeAs layer. Angular dependence of As main peak (dipole transition of As-1s electrons to higher energy hybrid bands) was observed suggesting character of As-4d e_g orbitals., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, accepted 9/11/2009 Physical Review B (B15)

To shed light on the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in Na_xCoO_2-yH_2O, the Mn doping effects are studied. X-ray absorption spectroscopy verifies that the doped Mn impurities occupy the Co sites and are with a valance close to +4. Impurity scattering by Mn is in the unitary limit that, however, does not lead to strong Tc suppression. This absence of the strong impurity effects on T_c is not consistent with the simple picture of a sign-changing order parameter.
