Phedimus aizoon has been utilized as a medicinal plant in Asia. However, the production of phytochemical-rich extracts from P. aizoon and the evaluation of their bioactivity are limited. Herein, phytochemical-rich extracts were prepared by ultrasound-assisted extraction of P. aizoon, with a high extraction yield of 16.56%. The extracts contained about 126 mg of phenolics and 31 mg of flavonoids per g of the extracts. The chromatographic analysis (GC-MS and HPLC analyses) identified 19 notable phytochemicals of the extracts from P. aizoon, including pentacosane, hexadecanoic acid, gallic acid, vanillic acid, and quercetin. The gallic acid content of the extracts was relatively high at 2.75 mg/g. The identified compounds are known to have various bioactivities, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. In fact, the prepared extracts exhibited antioxidant activity at 24–28% of that of ascorbic acid. In addition, it showed antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria). This study highlights that P. aizoon deserves attention as a natural bioactive substance and emphasizes the need for applications of the extracts from P. aizoon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brown algae are gaining traction as biorefinery feedstocks due to their advantages such as rapid growth and carbon dioxide sequestration. Saccharina japonica has high potential due to its high carbohydrate content, especially mannitol (26.7%). In this study, a biorefinery process for S. japonica was designed, with focusing on sugar conversion and bioconversion into lactic acid, a valuable platform chemical utilized in various industries. The existing sugar conversion process of S. japonica has been investigated by focusing on enzymatic or acid‐catalyzed hydrolysis, but not hot water extraction although mannitol can be easily recovered using water. The effect of temperature (60–120°C) on the mannitol yield from S. japonica was investigated, and a mannitol yield of 208 g/kg biomass was achieved at the optimal temperature of 100°C (about 78% of the theoretical maximum yield). This study emphasizes that this simple process has considerable potential for application as over 80% of the fermentable carbohydrates in S. japonica were mannitol. Then, S. japonica extract was applied to lactic acid production. First, lactic acid production of four bacterial strains was tested in a mannitol medium, and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus was selected as the superior producer, showing 1.93 to 2.92 times better lactic acid titer than others. Next, the optimal feeding concentration of mannitol was determined to be 20 g/L, which was all consumed by L. rhamnosus. Finally, S. japonica extract was applied to lactic acid production by L. rhamnosus, and the results showed similar fermentation profiles with the control medium: lactic acid production, 18.81 g/L (control: 18.97 g/L); lactic acid conversion, 95.1% (control: 95.9%); cell growth (OD600 nm), 8.9 (control: 7.4). The lactic acid yield in the designed biorefinery process was estimated to be 195.6 g/kg biomass, thus S. japonica has high potential as a biorefinery feedstock to produce valuable bioproducts, including lactic acid. Sea buckthorn berries (SBB) are well known for being rich in natural bioactive compounds with high pharmacological activity. In this study, the optimization of extraction parameters was performed to recover phenolic compounds with high antioxidant activity from SBB. This study involved a systematic optimization approach, including screening for a variety of parameters, including temperature, time, ethanol concentration, agitation, and solid loading. On the basis of Plackett–Burman design (PBD) model, the two most significant parameters (agitation and solid loading) were selected, and the correlation model between those parameters and multiple responses was derived via response surface methodology (RSM). As a result, the optimal extraction condition for maximizing phenolic content and antioxidant activity was determined to be agitation at 109.54 rpm and a solid loading of 172.67 g/L. Under optimal conditions, SBB extract showed a total phenolic content of 0.21 mg/mL and ABTS and DPPH activities of 27.27% and 58.16%, respectively. The SBB extract prepared under optimal conditions was found to contain caffeic acid, vanillic acid, rutin, and vitamin B1 (thiamine). This work is the first challenge to design an optimization model for the efficient recovery of antioxidants from SBB and is significant in that the model can be applied simply and economically to conventional extraction processes. Background: To increase skin permeability, various transdermal delivery techniques have been developed. However, due to the stratum corneum as a skin barrier, transdermal delivery remains limited. Aims: In this study, we evaluated efficacy and safety of arc‐poration as a novel technique disrupting the stratum corneum. Results: Optical images and histological analysis using reconstituted human skin and porcine skin showed that the treatment of arc‐poration created micropores with an average diameter of approximately 100 μm only to the depth of the stratum corneum, but not viable epidermis. In addition, the Franz diffusion cell experiment using reconstituted human skin showed a remarkable increase in permeability following pretreatment with arc‐poration. Clinical results clearly demonstrated the enhancement of the skin‐improving effect of cosmetics by pretreatment of arc‐poration in terms of gloss, hydration, flakiness, texture, tone, tone evenness, and pigmentation of skin, without causing abnormal skin responses. The concentration of ozone and nitrogen oxides generated by arc‐poration was below the permissible value for the human body. Conclusions: Arc‐poration can increase skin permeability by creating stratum corneum‐specific micropores, which can enhance the skin‐improving effect of cosmetics without adverse responses. The Chinese mitten crab (CMC) also known as Eriocheir sinensis has great significance in the aquaculture industry. The bacterial communities inhabiting the CMC's gut may differ depending on the host habitat and can aid in their normal biological functioning. These microbes are also known to have certain effects on their flavor. In this study, we utilized MiSeq high-throughput sequencing technology to explore the diversity of bacterial communities in the gut of CMCs from three different geographical locations in Korea: the Geum (GD), Han (HD), and Tamjin (TD) rivers. Although most of the environmental parameters were similar at the three sites, significant differences in conductivity (CDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), and salinity were observed. The results show that CMCs sampled from these locations exhibited distinct microbial composition and abundance. For example, the genus Candidatus Hepatoplasma displayed significantly higher abundance in CMCs from HD than those in the other locations, suggesting nutritional stress. Similarly, the crabs collected from TD showed a higher abundance of pathogenic Helicobacter than those from HD and GD sites. We also observed differences in the amino acid, nucleotide, and lactic acid concentrations between different tissues such as the muscle, hepatopancreas, and testis of CMCs. However, only small differences were observed when these characteristics were compared in CMCs from different locations. Our results offer important insights into the intestinal bacterial composition in CMCs which in turn may help in designing better culturing strategies for these important species of crabs. Herein, the effects of oxygen‐compensated capping layer (CCL) on the electrical performance and stability of indium‐tin‐zinc‐oxide (ITZO) thin‐film transistors (TFTs) are investigated. Two different channel structures, namely, single and dual channels, are tested for the ITZO TFTs. The dual‐channel layer is created by depositing an oxygen CCL on the oxygen‐uncompensated channel layer (UCL), while the single‐channel layer consists only of the oxygen UCL. It is found that the oxygen CCL is critical for enhancing the electrical properties of dual‐channel ITZO TFT and its stability under different stress modes such as dynamic stress, positive bias temperature stress, and negative bias illumination stress. The dual‐channel ITZO TFT exhibits a saturation field‐effect mobility of 16.69 cm2 V−1s−1, a threshold voltage of 6.80 V, and a subthreshold swing of 0.22 V dec−1. Furthermore, it is revealed that the higher metal‐oxide concentration and fewer defects in the dual channel lead to enhanced electrical performance and stability of the device. As the volume of satellite images increases rapidly, unsupervised classification can be utilized to swiftly investigate land cover distributions without prior knowledge and to generate training data for supervised (or deep learning-based) classification. In this study, an inter-image k-means clustering algorithm (IIkMC), as an improvement of the native k-means clustering algorithm (kMC), was introduced to obtain a single set of class signatures so that the classification results could be compatible among multiple images. Because IIkMC was a computationally intensive algorithm, parallelized approaches were deployed, using multi-cores of a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU), to speed up the process. kMC and IIkMC were applied to a series of images acquired in a PlanetScope mission. In addition to the capability of the inter-image compatibility of the classification results, IIkMC could settle the problem of incomplete segmentation and class canceling revealed in kMC. Based on CPU parallelism, the speed of IIkMC improved, becoming up to 12.83 times better than sequential processing. When using a GPU, the speed improved up to 25.53 times, rising to 39.00 times with parallel reduction. From the results, it was confirmed IIkMC provided more reliable results than kMC, and its parallelism could facilitate the overall inspection of multiple images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Technological innovation generates products, services, and processes that can disrupt existing industries and lead to the emergence of new fields. Distributed ledger technology, or blockchain, offers novel transparency, security, and anonymity characteristics in transaction data that may disrupt existing industries. However, research attention has largely examined its application to finance. Less is known of any broader applications, particularly in Industry 4.0. This study investigates academic research publications on blockchain and predicts emerging industries using academia‐industry dynamics. This study adopts latent Dirichlet allocation and dynamic topic models to analyze large text data with a high capacity for dimensionality reduction. Prior studies confirm that research contributes to technological innovation through spillover, including products, processes, and services. Lactic acid (LA) is an important platform chemical with a wide range of applications, including bioplastic materials, and demand for it is growing rapidly. However, the high cost of feedstock for LA production is a major barrier to industrial production. This study designed a process to produce LA from chestnut shell (CS), a low-cost biomass. The entire process includes KOH pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification, and fermentation. This study investigated the chemical compositions and physicochemical properties of raw CS and KOH pretreated CS (KpCS) to evaluate the impact of the pretreatment process that enhances the conversion of cellulose into glucose. The results showed that KOH affected the lignin removal and surface morphological changes of CS, and FT-IR and TGA patterns correlated to increased cellulose fractions were found. In the fermentation process, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus was selected as a prominent LA producer, and the fermentation using KpCS hydrolysate was carried out. As a result, cell growth (27%), glucose consumption (23%), and LA production (21%) were all achieved higher than the control group. The LA production yield from our suggested process was estimated to be 187 g/kg CS, and we concluded that CS has a high potential as a feedstock for LA production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
