Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent mental disorders during adolescence, and early diagnosis and treatment are important. We aimed to characterize the microstructure of the brain in medication-naïve adolescents with first-episode MDD.Methods: Patients with MDD (N = 31) and healthy controls (N = 27) participated in this study and severity of depressive symptoms, duration of untreated depressive episode, demographic data, and diffuse tensor imaging data were collected. A comparative analysis of patients and healthy controls was performed, and the effect of medication on the brain`s integrity was investigated through comparison before and after 3 months of treatment in the patient group. Tract-based spatial statistics was used for diffusion tensor image analysis.Results: In the patient group, functional anisotropy (FA) values were significantly higher at the genu of the corpus callosum, body of the corpus callosum, and right anterior corona radiata than in healthy controls. After 3 months of treatment, FA values were significantly decreased in the left anterior limb of the internal capsule, left posterior limb of the internal capsule, and left superior longitudinal fasciculus.Limitations: The sample size is relatively small and 3-month treatment period was relatively short.Conclusion: FA values of patients with MDD were increased compared to healthy controls and decreased after treatment. Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy on the brain employs red to near-infrared (NIR) light to treat various neurological and psychological disorders. The mechanism involves the activation of cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, thereby enhancing ATP synthesis. Additionally, light absorption by ion channels triggers the release of calcium ions, instigating the activation of transcription factors and subsequent gene expression. This cascade of events not only augments neuronal metabolic capacity but also orchestrates anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic responses, fostering neurogenesis and synaptogenesis. It shows promise for treating conditions like dementia, stroke, brain trauma, Parkinson's disease, and depression, even enhancing cognitive functions in healthy individuals and eliciting growing interest within the medical community. However, delivering sufficient light to the brain through transcranial approaches poses a significant challenge due to its limited penetration into tissue, prompting an exploration of alternative delivery methods such as intracranial and intranasal approaches. This comprehensive review aims to explore the mechanisms through which PBM exerts its effects on the brain and provide a summary of notable preclinical investigations and clinical trials conducted on various brain disorders, highlighting PBM's potential as a therapeutic modality capable of effectively impeding disease progression within the organism—a task often elusive with conventional pharmacological interventions. Background: Prediction of the severity and outcomes of Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is difficult.Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive power of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for the severity and outcomes of RHS.Material and Methods: From 2007 to 2017, a retrospective study of 102 hospitalized patients with RHS was conducted. The degree of paralysis was assessed by determining the House-Brackmann (H-B) grade. Obesity, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus were assessed, and the blood NLR and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio were determined. The patients received steroids and antivirals, and were followed in the outpatient department at 1, 4, 12, and 24 weeks.Results: The H-B grade of the high-NLR group was significantly higher than that of the normal-NLR group (p = 0.039), and the probability of complete recovery was significantly lower in the high-NLR group (p = 0.048).Conclusions: Patients with RHS who have an elevated NLR have poor outcomes in terms of the H-B grade. The investigation of impurity behavior in fusion plasmas is a critical issue in fusion plasma research. The effective charge (Zeff) profile is a widely used measure of the impurity levels in fusion plasmas. In this study, the visible bremsstrahlung emissivity profile is reconstructed using toroidal visible bremsstrahlung (TVB) arrays at Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR). KSTAR TVB arrays have recently been developed and calibrated using a halogen light source and an integrating sphere. The reconstruction algorithm has been developed using the Phillips–Tikhonov method, and the reconstruction accuracy is assessed with test profiles. Electron density and temperature profiles from Thomson scattering diagnostics are fitted for Zeff calculations. Subsequently, the Zeff profiles in the edge localized mode suppression experiment are reconstructed. Purpose: Adolescent depression can have a chronic course; hence, the importance of adherence to antidepressant medication for successful treatment outcomes is emphasized. This study aimed to examine different adherence measures and identify clinical factors that influence adherence in adolescent depression. Patients and Methods: A prospective study was conducted for patients diagnosed with depressive disorder according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, Fourth Edition from outpatient psychiatric settings at Korea University Medical Center, Guro Hospital. Patient demographics were obtained from a questionnaire, interview, and review of chart records. Adherence was assessed by four methods (Medication Event Monitoring System [MEMS], pill count, clinical rating scale, and patient's self-report). The Toronto Side Effect Scale was used to evaluate side effects, and specific depressive symptoms were assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression and Childhood Depression Inventory–Korean version. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support was administered to analyze social support, and the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form was used to evaluate parental stress levels. We used concordance correlation analysis to evaluate the relationship among the four adherence measures and the relationship between adherence level and clinical factors. Results: Overall, the study enrolled 48 outpatients (mean age 16.33± 1.93 years). The mean duration of illness was 1.27± 2.17 years. Adherence rates for MEMS, clinician rating scale, pill count, and self-report after conversion to dichotomous measures were 67.5%, 48.9%, 60.0%, and 56.3%, respectively. Only the duration of illness remained significantly correlated with MEMS (r = 0.510, p =0.001). Conclusion: Pill count exhibited a higher degree of agreement with MEMS adherence than the other two adherence measures, possibly indicating that pill count may be a considerably reliable measure of adherence. Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common mental disorder, the onset of which frequently occurs during adolescence. While differences in heart rate variability (HRV) between depressed and healthy participants have previously been observed, results have been inconsistent. This study thus investigated the features of HRV in adolescents with MDD.Methods: We recruited first-episode drug-naïve adolescents aged 13-18 years who had been diagnosed with MDD, and healthy age-matched controls. HRV was measured before and after a 12-week antidepressant treatment. We compared HRV measures between patient group and control group. We also tried to find correlation between HRV measures and depression rating scales.Results: Fifty-seven participants were included (patient group: n = 31; control group: n = 26). The patient group showed a lower normalized high frequency (HF norm), a higher normalized low frequency (LF norm), and a higher LF/HF ratio than did the control group. After treatment, LF was significantly decreased within the patient group compared to baseline. Hamilton Depression Rating Scales and Children's Depression Inventory scores were positively correlated with LF norm and LF/HF ratio, and negatively correlated with HF norm, when included all participants in analysis LIMITATIONS: Sample size of this study was small to assess influences of confounding factors on HRV. And follow up period was relatively short to see impact of pharmacotherapy.Conclusion: An imbalance of the autonomic nervous system might be a meaningful feature of adolescent MDD, and HRV might represent a potential biological marker for pathophysiological changes in MDD. A prototype real-time (RT) Thomson scattering system was tested in a KSTAR Thomson scattering diagnostic system [1]. For this RT-Thomson system, 155 channels of 5 GS/s digitizer were operated (31 polychromators, each has 5 signal channels used in the KSTAR Thomson scattering system). The 5 Giga Sampling / second (GS/s) digitizer restored the pulsed Thomson scattering signals, and these acquired digital signals were fitted using a pulse function and Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) method to remove noise with high speed on the TS signals [2]. The pulse fitting parameters (pulse height, rising time, falling time and peak position) were applied to calculate plasma parameters like the electron temperature (T e). To reduce the T e calculation time, a neural-network (NN) method was introduced using graphic processor unit (GPU) calculations. These plasma parameters were transmitted to the KSTAR plasma control system (PCS)using a reflective memory (RFM) card. The delay time of this RT-Thomson before transfer to the RFM card measured less than 7 ms for a T e calculation of 31 positions, and the transfer time from the RFM card to the PCS was 6.8 ms. Therefore, at 80.31% of KSTAR long pulse plasma shot # 32,763 (84.15 s), the end-to-end treatment time was less than 50 ms. The uniqueness of this paper is that it uses 5GS/s digitizer, Fast Fourier Transformation FFT fitting method, and neural- network (NN) analysis system, and finally succeeds in transferring Te profile data to the KSTAR PCS system in real- time (80.31% within 50 ms delay) using RFM cards for KSTAR long pulse plasma (84.15 s) for the first time. This study aimed to gather a homogeneous sample of adolescent patients to analyze the differences in functional connectivity and brain network parameters between suicidal and non-suicidal major depressive disorder (MDD) patients using a data-driven whole-brain approach. Patients recruited at the psychiatry department of Korea University Guro Hospital from November 2014 to March 2020 were diagnosed with MDD, were 13–18 years old, had IQ scores >80, had no family history of psychotic or personality disorders, had no smoking or alcohol consumption history, and were drug-naïve to psychotropic medication. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Children's Depression Inventory. Structural and functional MRI scans were conducted and analyzed using the CONN toolbox. Of 74 enrolled patients, 62 were analyzed. Regions of interest (ROIs) showing higher betweenness centrality in non-suicidal patients were the left superior temporal gyrus and left supramarginal gyrus. ROIs showing higher betweenness centrality in suicidal patients were the right hippocampus, left intracalcarine cortex, right inferior temporal gyrus, and the lateral visual network. Suicidal patients also showed different resting state functional connectivity profiles from non-suicidal patients. Small sample size. Suicidal patients may overthink and overvalue future risks while having a more negatively biased autobiographical memory. Social cognition and the ability to overcome egocentricity bias seem to weaken. Such features can disrupt cognitive recovery and resilience, leading to more suicidal behaviors. To solve these problems, biometric measurement based on a non-contact method, such as face image sequencing is developed. This makes it possible to measure biometric data without any operation and side effects. However, it is impossible for a remote center to identify the person whose data are measured by the novel methods. In this paper, we propose the novel non-contact heart rate and blood pressure imaging system, Deep Health Eye. This system has authentication process at the same time as measuring bio signals, through non-contact method. To measure the effective ion charge Z eff profile, most plasma machines are equipped with a bremsstrahlung measurement system as a filter-scope diagnostic device. In Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) machine, a new type of bremsstrahlung measurement system, called hybrid-type polychromator system, was developed and tested at a single position during the 10th KSTAR plasma campaign [1] . The main idea of this hybrid-type polychromator system is to combine a polychromator system, which can measure the Thomson scattering signal, with a bremsstrahlung signal measurement system. The advantages of this hybrid-type polychromator system include the reduction of diagnostic vacuum windows in the Tokamak or Stellarator, and the measurement of the Z eff parameter with electron temperature ( T e ) and electron density ( n e ) at a same position. In this study, we improve last year's hybrid-type polychromator system. A major improvement is the change in the structure of the optical system. This allows measuring the bremsstrahlung signals more clearly, and four hybrid-type polychromators were equipped to measure the Z eff profile preliminarily. Visual diagnosis and rejuvenation are methods currently used to diagnose and treat pressure ulcers, respectively. However, the treatment process is difficult. We developed a biophotonic sensor to diagnose pressure ulcers and, subsequently, developed a pressure ulcer care device (PUCD.) We conducted animal and clinical trials to investigate the device's effectiveness. We confirmed the accuracy of the pressure ulcer diagnosis algorithm to be 91% and we observed an 85% reduction in immune cells when using the PUCD to treat pressure ulcer-induced mice. Additionally, we compared the treatment group to the pressure ulcer induction group to assess the PUCD's effectiveness in identifying immune cells through its nuclear shape. These results indicate a positive effect and suggest the use of PUCD as a recovery method for pressure ulcer diagnosis and treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Thomson scattering diagnostic system is designed for Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST) to measure the spatial profiles of the electron temperature. The system is carefully designed to collect a sufficient number of photoelectrons and to reduce the noise sources, since relatively low electron densities and temperatures are expected in VEST due to the limited power capacity at present. The target electron temperature and the density are 10–200 eV and 5 × 10 18 m −3 , respectively which are extrapolated from the data of triple Langmuir probes measuring the edge plasma parameters at R = 0.75 m by assuming a parabolic density profile. The collecting optics is designed to have a wide-view angle and low cost by using a commercial photographic lens of low f-number and high transmittance optical fiber bundle. The bandwidths of the interference filters in the polychromator are designed for reliable measurements within the target electron temperature range. As a photo detector which is coupled with the filters, an avalanche photodiode (APD) with a low dark current and an adequate quantum efficiency near the laser wavelength is selected for the high signal-to-noise ratio. The number of photons transferred to the polychromator and the number of photoelectrons in the APD are calculated. At the commissioning phase, an oscilloscope with a high sampling rate will be adopted to check the necessity of the noise reduction by multi-shot signal accumulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Objective: The role of C-type lectin receptor, a type of pattern recognition receptor, in otitis media with effusion (OME) is unclear. We assayed the levels of expression of C-type lectin receptor mRNA in children with OME and evaluated its relationship to the presence of bacteria, accompanying diseases, and characteristics of exudates. Subjects and Methods: The study population consisted of 73 children with OME who had undergone ventilating tube insertion. The levels of expression of Dectin-1, MR1, MR2, DC-SIGN, Syk, Card-9, Bcl-10, Malt-1, Src, Dec-205, Galectin-1, Tim-3, Trem-1, and DAP-12 mRNA in middle ear effusion were determined by real-time PCR. The level of expression of each mRNA was correlated with the presence of bacteria, accompanying diseases, and exudates characteristics. Results: The levels of expression of C-type lectin receptor mRNAs were not associated with bacterial presence or exudates characteristics (p >0.05 each). Levels of expression, however, were significantly higher in patients with sinusitis, adenoid vegetation or adenoiditis, and allergic rhinitis (p <0.05 each). Conclusions: Levels of expression of C-type lectin receptor mRNA may be associated with the pathogenesis of OME, being significantly higher in patients with than without accompanying sinusitis, adenoid vegetation or adenoiditis, and allergic rhinitis. Abstarct: This paper examines the relationship among women''s employment, fertility, and economic growth using two regional panel data, those of 8 East Asian and 15 EU countries over the period 1980–2008. We use a panel structural vector autoregression model and estimate the variance decomposition. The endogeneity among women''s employment, fertility, and growth is considerably reduced when we use the samples of East Asian and the EU countries rather than a specific country. In addition, we find that changes in women''s employment and fertility rates affect the determination of growth rates in EU countries to the extent of about 15%, which is higher than the impact in East Asian countries—about 10%. Abstract: The Internet music market is a new profit-making entity and is growing rapidly due to its extension into the mobile device market. Introduction of the portable multimedia player (PMP), which is the next generation of MP3-players, will influence a customer’s audio and video service preference. The Internet music market needs to develop a new business model (BM) for PMPs. This article examines new BMs for customer preference via a conjoint analysis. In addition, we investigate customers’ willingness to pay (WTP) using a multinomial logit model. A 10-week feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary lipid source and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) level on growth, body composition and blood chemistry of juvenile starry flounder. Three replicate groups of fish (average weight 1.9 g) were fed diets containing different n-3 HUFA levels ranging from 0.0% to 2.7% adjusted by either lauric acid as sole lipid source or different proportions of corn oil, linseed oil and squid liver oil at 10% of total lipid. Survival was not affected by dietary lipid source or n-3 HUFA level. Weight gain, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the diets containing squid liver oil were significantly higher than those fed the diets containing lauric acid, corn oil or linseed oil as the sole lipid source. However, there were no significant differences in weight gain, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio among fish fed the diets containing different n-3 HUFA levels ranging from 0.6% to 2.7%. Dietary n-3 HUFA requirement when using a broken line model was estimated at 0.9% for weight gain of fish. Crude lipid content of fish fed the diet containing lauric acid was significantly lower than that of other groups. Fatty acid compositions of neutral and polar lipid of fish were directly reflected by dietary fatty acid composition. The highest 14:0, 18:2n-6, 18:3n-3 and n-3 HUFA contents were observed in fish fed the diets containing lauric acid, corn oil, linseed oil and squid liver oil, respectively. The contents of n-3 HUFA in fish linearly increased with increasing dietary squid liver oil. Plasma cholesterol concentration and aspartate aminotransferase activity were affected by dietary lipid sources. These results indicate that dietary n-3 HUFA are essential and a value of at least 0.9% of n-3 HUFA in the diet could be recommended for optimum growth and efficient feed utilization of juvenile starry flounder. Background: Long-term care facilities (LCFs) in South Korea have limited knowledge of and capability to care for patients with delirium. They also often lack an electronic medical record system. These barriers hinder systematic approaches to delirium monitoring and intervention. Therefore, this study aims to develop a web-based app for delirium prevention in LCFs and analyse its feasibility and usability.Methods: The app was developed based on the validity of the AI prediction model algorithm. A total of 173 participants were selected from LCFs to participate in a study to determine the predictive risk factors for delerium. The app was developed in five phases: (1) the identification of risk factors and preventive intervention strategies from a review of evidence-based literature, (2) the iterative design of the app and components of delirium prevention, (3) the development of a delirium prediction algorithm and cloud platform, (4) a pilot test and validation conducted with 33 patients living in a LCF, and (5) an evaluation of the usability and feasibility of the app, completed by nurses (Main users).Results: A web-based app was developed to predict high risk of delirium and apply preventive interventions accordingly. Moreover, its validity, usability, and feasibility were confirmed after app development. By employing machine learning, the app can predict the degree of delirium risk and issue a warning alarm. Therefore, it can be used to support clinical decision-making, help initiate the assessment of delirium, and assist in applying preventive interventions.Conclusions: This web-based app is evidence-based and can be easily mobilised to support care for patients with delirium in LCFs. This app can improve the recognition of delirium and predict the degree of delirium risk, thereby helping develop initiatives for delirium prevention and providing interventions. Recent advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have resulted in many studies on resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in depressed patients. Previous studies have shown alterations between multiple brain areas, such as the prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and basal ganglia, but there are very few prospective studies with a longitudinal design on adolescent depression patients. We therefore investigated the change in positive rsFC in a homogeneous drug-naïve adolescent group after 12 weeks of antidepressant treatment. Functional neuroimaging data were collected and analyzed from 32 patients and 27 healthy controls. Based on previous literature, the amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), insula, hippocampus, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) were selected as seed regions. Seed-to-voxel analyses were performed between pre- and post-treatment states as well as between the patients and controls at baseline. The positive rsFC between the right DLPFC and the left putamen/right frontal operculum were shown to be higher in patients than in the controls. The positive rsFC between the left DLPFC and left putamen/left lingual gyrus was also higher in the patients than in the controls. The positive rsFC between the right dorsal ACC and the left precentral gyrus had reduced after the 12-week antidepressant treatment. Regions involved in the frontolimbic circuit showed changes in the positive rsFC in the depressed adolescents as compared to in the healthy controls. There were also significant changes in the positive rsFC after 12-weeks of antidepressant treatment. Previous studies have reported conflicting results on the influence of seasons on post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis incidences. This study aimed to investigate the seasonality associated with the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis, and to evaluate its association with climate variables in South Korea. South Korea. Retrospective cohort study. The postoperative endophthalmitis incidences were identified using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service claim data from July 2014 to June 2017. The monthly climate data were obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration. The incidences of endophthalmitis were analyzed by the month of the year, and by the season. The association between postoperative endophthalmitis and the climatic variables, including mean temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, and hours of sunshine, was investigated. The incidences were the highest in July, and they were the most prevalent during the summer months, although fewer cataract surgeries were performed in the summer months than during the rest of the year. The postoperative endophthalmitis incidences tended to increase with increasing relative humidity and increasing precipitation. The incidences of post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis peaked during the hot and humid months. Understanding the seasonal and climatic influences on postoperative infection might help in risk stratification and outcome improvisation after the cataract surgery is performed. • Upgrade of Thomson scattering system on VEST has been performed. • The laser input power is increased up to 2.8 times by injection system improvement. • Optical fiber bundle replaces a single core fiber to increase the signal level 2.1 times. • Oscilloscope envelope mode is utilized to measure periodic large data for each burst. • Time resolution is improved to 1 ms with new burst laser and fast DAQ systems. A Thomson scattering diagnostic system was developed and successfully measured electron temperature and density of core plasma (R = 0.35 m) in Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). However, the current system is able to measure only a single time point in a shot. Therefore, upgrade of the Thomson scattering system has been prepared and is in progress to obtain the time evolution. The upgrade is focused on three parts. First, the laser injection system is improved by introducing a burst mode laser with the energy of 2 J and repetition rate of 1 kHz for 10 ms. Furthermore, the laser injection optics is improved to minimize the optical loss. Second, minimum etendue limit of the collection optics is increased by employing a fiber bundle of three single-core fibers. Finally, a data acquisition system is prepared to record the burst laser signals for high sampling rate. Oscilloscope envelope mode is adopted and tested for measuring ten burst laser signal with 1.25 GS/s. Through the upgrade, the time evolution of electron temperature and density is expected to be measured in a single shot with enhanced signal-to-noise ratio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Thomson scattering (TS) system has been developed on Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST) to measure the electron temperature and the density. In VEST, it is quite challenging to measure TS signals because the energy of the utilized pulsed laser and the target electron density are low, 0.85 J and ∼5 × 1018 m−3, respectively. Furthermore, the difficulties caused by filter specifications have to be resolved because of the use of commercial interference filters with broad bandwidth and poor blocking at the laser wavelength. Therefore, we especially optimize the placement order of the filter sets based on the evaluation of the relative errors to overcome the poor spectral resolution. In addition, the amount of the stray light that penetrating filters is reduced by vacuum components such as baffles, louvres, and a viewing dump. The incidence of heart disease increases with age. The typical method of monitoring arrhythmia is to use a body patch type sensor with a wet electrode. Even though this sensor is easy to use, it has several disadvantages such as problems caused by wet electrodes in tissues when they are monitored for long periods. Thus, a monitoring sensor integrated into clothes with a dry electrode is proposed. In this study, we developed a smart outdoor shirt equipped with a dry electrode electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor for a cardiac arrhythmia computer-aided diagnosis system. The sensor can be inserted in a console close to the chest, charged, used to communicate wirelessly, and can be connected to a smartphone application. According to experiments, the ECG signals measured by the smart shirt indicated that 97.5 ± 1% of the signals could be measured in an immobile state and at least 85.2 ± 2% of the signals could be measured during movement. In addition, we propose a computer-aided diagnosis system for detecting cardiac arrhythmia. It was determined through experiments that the system can detect arrhythmia with an accuracy of 98.2 ± 2%. In this study, we propose the direct diagnosis of thyroid cancer using a small probe. The probe can easily check the abnormalities of existing thyroid tissue without relying on experts, which reduces the cost of examining thyroid tissue and enables the initial self-examination of thyroid cancer with high accuracy. A multi-layer silicon-structured probe module is used to photograph light scattered by elastic changes in thyroid tissue under pressure to obtain a tactile image of the thyroid gland. In the thyroid tissue under pressure, light scatters to the outside depending on the presence of malignant and positive properties. A simple and easy-to-use tactile-sensation imaging system is developed by documenting the characteristics of the organization of tissues by using non-invasive technology for analyzing tactile images and judging the properties of abnormal tissues. Background: Drinking water has several advantages that have already been established, such as improving blood circulation, reducing acid in the stomach, etc. However, due to people not noticing the amount of water they consume every time they drink, most people drink less water than the recommended daily allowance.Objective: In this paper, a capacitive sensor for developing an automatic tumbler to measure water level is proposed. Different than in previous studies, the proposed capacitive sensor was separated into two sets: the main sensor for measuring the water level in the tumbler, and the reference sensor for measuring the incremental level unit.Methods: In order to confirm the feasibility of the proposed idea, and to optimize the shape of the sensor, a 3D model of the capacitive sensor with the tumbler was designed and subjected to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation. According to the simulation results, the electrodes were made of copper and assembled in a tumbler manufactured by a 3D printer. The tumbler was filled with water and was subjected to experiments in order to assess the sensor's performance.Results: The comparison of experimental results to the simulation results shows that the measured capacitance value of the capacitive sensor changed linearly as the water level varied. This proves that the proposed sensor can accurately measure the water level in the tumbler. Additionally, by use of the curve fitting method, a compensation algorithm was found to match the actual level with the measured level.Conclusions: The experimental results proved that the proposed capacitive sensor is able to measure the actual water level in the tumbler accurately. This paper presents a relaxation labeling process with the newly defined compatibility measure for solving a general nonrigid point matching problem. In the literature, there exists a point matching method using relaxation labeling; however, the compatibility coefficient takes a binary value of zero or one depending on whether a point and a neighbor have corresponding points. Our approach generalizes this relaxation labeling method. The compatibility coefficient takes n-discrete values which measure the correlation between point pairs. In order to improve the speed of the algorithm, we use a diagram of log distance and polar angle bins to compute the correlation. The extensive experiments show that the proposed topology preserving relaxation algorithm significantly improves the matching performance compared to other state-of-the-art point matching algorithms. Scaffolds for the production of cultivated meat, a promising sustainable meat alternative, should exhibit physical and chemical properties that enable three-dimensional animal cell culture, along with biological characteristics that support cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. Additionally, the scaffold should be crafted from edible materials and offer textural similarities to meat and have minimal influence on flavor and taste. Herein, an edible alginate-based alginate-cellulose hydrogel (ACe-gel) scaffold derived from the brown alga Undaria pinnatifida is developed. In terms of physical characteristics, the scaffold had porosity (119.5 ± 37.2 μm) and moisture-holding capacity (73.03 ± 3.82, 68.66 ± 9.54, and 84.17 ± 9.94 at 25 °C, 37 °C, and 60 °C, respectively) suitable for three-dimensional culture and differentiation of bovine muscle stem cells (bMuSCs). Accordingly, the scaffold was superior to a commercial alginate scaffold in terms of the attachment and proliferation of bMuSCs (5.5-fold over 72 h), and its performance was comparable with that of a lyophilized collagen scaffold (7.8-fold over 72 h, compared with the pure alginate). The bMuSCs cultured on the ACe-gel scaffold were capable of differentiating into muscle fibers, as verified by gene expression profile analysis. Furthermore, the scaffold exhibited minimal heavy metal contents and distinct seaweed odorants, while the stress-strain characteristics of the scaffold cultured with bMuSC (Young's modulus of raw ACe-gel: 285.19 ± 83.37 kPa, cooked ACe-gel meat: 880.60 ± 485.60 kPa) closely resembled that of meat (raw beef: 267.76 ± 156.42 kPa, cooked beef: 1331.94 ± 762.43 kPa). These findings highlight that the seaweed-derived and animal-free ACe-gel scaffold has strong potential for utilization as a food technology for cultured meat production in the future. A Thomson scattering (TS) system has been utilized to measure the electron temperature and density of the core region of Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). Recently, the laser injection system is successfully upgraded adopting the burst laser with the repetition rate of 1 kHz and the energy of 2 J. Furthermore, improved collection optics with additional polychromators and a 32-channel fast digitizer are prepared to observe the fast time evolution of radial profiles. This improvement is essential to study fast phenomena such as internal reconnection event (IRE). We increase the TS signal and reduce the stray light by introducing new filters having better optical properties such as high optical density at 1064 nm, transmission, and reflectance. Moreover, the optimum reverse bias voltages are newly set to make the system operational independent of the background radiation. BACKGROUND: Dysphagia and dysarthria tend to coexist in stroke patients. Dysphagia can reduce patients' quality of life, cause aspiration pneumonia and increased mortality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate correlations among swallowing function parameters and acoustic vowel space values in patients with stroke. METHODS: Data from stroke patients with dysarthria and dysphagia were collected. The formant parameter representing the resonance frequency of the vocal tract as a two-dimensional coordinate point was measured for the /a/, /ae/, /i/, and /u/vowels, and the quadrilateral vowel space area (VSA) and formant centralization ratio (FCR) were measured. Swallowing function was evaluated by a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) using the videofluoroscopic dysphagia scale (VDS) and penetration aspiration scale (PAS). Pearson's correlation and linear regression analyses were used to assess the correlation of VSA and FCR to VDS and PAS scores. RESULTS: Thirty-one stroke patients with dysphagia and dysarthria were analyzed. VSA showed a negative correlation to VDS and PAS scores, while FCR showed a positive correlation to VDS score, but not to PAS score. VSA and FCR were significant factors for assessing dysphagia severity. • The plasma startup recipe and each component of auxiliary devices are checked to support the tokamak physics experiments. • This process will conduct regularly for each KSTAR campaign in the future. At the beginning of every KSTAR campaign, during the plasma commissioning period, a stable tokamak plasma operation condition is aimed to be established to support various physics experiments throughout the rest of the KSTAR campaign. To achieve this, considering the KSTAR's superconducting operation, the plasma startup recipe is confirmed, and every component of auxiliary devices for fuel, heating, and diagnostics must be checked. A robust plasma startup scenario has been secured at the beginning of every plasma commissioning period for all plasma experiments. Then, the commissioning work deals with the plasma shaping and the auxiliary devices for fueling and heating. As the last stage, the radial profile diagnostics are tested by moving the plasma boundary and varying the operating toroidal magnetic field for cross-validation in a dedicated session. The ITER Real-Time Framework (RTF) is a software suite designed and developed to facilitate the implementation of various real-time applications for ITER plant systems. The main driver to implement RTF was the Plasma Control System (PCS). RTF was designed as a base and development environment for PCS. However, due to its universal architecture, it can also be applied in other systems requiring real-time control or data processing. This paper presents the demonstration system to evaluate RTF in Thomson Scattering (TS) diagnostics. The system was developed to validate the integration of data acquisition hardware with RTF and check it in real-time data processing applications. The presented system covers the whole path of data acquisition, processing and archiving required for a typical Instrumentation and Control (I&C) system for ITER diagnostics. The main components of the RTF-based application developed for the system are device support for the pulsed giga-sample analog-to-digital converter, functional blocks implementing algorithms for analysing pulses from polychromator and calculating plasma electron temperature as well as interfaces for archiving raw data and publishing the measurement results. The overriding goal of the presented work was a detailed functional and performance evaluation of the implemented RTF-based system. The system was tested in laboratory using simulated data and in tokamak conditions at Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR). During the test campaign at KSTAR, the developed RTF-based application was integrated into the Thomson Scattering system and tested during regular operation of the tokamak with signals from a real polychromator. Highlights from the article: Machine learning classification of first-onset drug-naïve MDD using structural MRI We wanted to know whether it is possible to reliably train a predictive classification with a high accuracy even in the first-onset drug-naïve adolescent MDD just using structural MRI without using any other clinical data. A total of six classification models were used to build the adolescent MDD classification model: treebased bagging, random forest, multi-layered feedforward neural network, adaptive boosting, gradient boosting machine, and support vector machine.

The activation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element-binding protein (CREB) via phosphorylation in the hippocampus is an important signaling mechanism for enhancing memory processing. Although melatonin is known to increase CREB expression in various animal models, the signaling mechanism between melatonin and CREB has been unknown in vitro. Thus, we confirmed the signaling pathway between the melatonin receptor 1 (MT1) and CREB using melatonin in HT-22 cells. Melatonin increased MT1 and gradually induced signals associated with long-term memory processing through phosphorylation of Raf, ERK, p90RSK, CREB, and BDNF expression. We also confirmed that the calcium, JNK, and AKT pathways were not involved in this signaling pathway by melatonin in HT-22 cells. Furthermore, we investigated whether melatonin regulated the expressions of CREB-BDNF associated with long-term memory processing in aged HT-22 cells. In conclusion, melatonin mediated the MT1-ERK-p90RSK-CREB-BDNF signaling pathway in the in vitro long-term memory processing model and increased the levels of p-CREB and BDNF expression in melatonin-treated cells compared to untreated HT-22 cells in the cellular aged state. Photodamage is extrinsically induced by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and it increases the risk of various skin disorders. Therefore, discovery of novel biomarkers of photodamage is important. In this study, using LC–MS/MS analysis of epidermis from UVB-irradiated hairless mice, we identified 57 proteins whose levels changed after UVB exposure, and selected 7 proteins related to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle through pathway analysis. Dihydrolipoyl dehydrogenase (DLD) was the only TCA cycle-associated protein that showed a decreased expression after the UVB exposure. We also performed targeted analysis to detect intermediates and products of the TCA cycle using GC–TOF-MS. Interestingly, malic acid and fumaric acid levels significantly decreased in the UVB-treated group. Our results demonstrate that DLD and its associated metabolites, malic acid and fumaric acid, may be candidate biomarkers of UVB-induced skin photoaging. Additionally, we showed that Aloe vera , a natural skin moisturizer, regulated DLD, malic acid and fumaric acid levels in UVB-exposed epidermis. Our strategy to integrate the proteome and targeted metabolite to detect novel UVB targets will lead to a better understanding of skin photoaging and photodamage. Our study also supports that A. vera exerts significant anti-photodamage activity via regulation of DLD, a novel UVB target, in the epidermis. Biological significance This study is the first example of an integration of proteomic and metabolite analysis techniques to find new biomarker candidates for the regulation of the UVB-induced skin photoaging. DLD, malic acid, and fumaric acid can be used for development of cosmeceuticals and nutraceuticals regulating the change of skin metabolism induced by the UVB overexposure. Moreover, this is also the first attempt to investigate the role of the TCA cycle in photodamaged epidermis. The deficiency and excess of vitamin D cause various diseases, necessitating continuous management; but it is not easy to accurately measure the serum vitamin D level in the body using a non-invasive method. The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between vitamin D levels, body information obtained by an InBody scan, and blood parameters obtained during health checkups, to determine the optimum frequency of vitamin D quantification in the skin and to propose a vitamin D measurement method based on impedance. We assessed body composition, arm impedance, and blood vitamin D concentrations to determine the correlation between each element using multiple machine learning analyses and an algorithm which predicted the concentration of vitamin D in the body using the impedance value developed. Body fat percentage obtained from the InBody device and blood parameters albumin and lactate dehydrogenase correlated with vitamin D level. An impedance measurement frequency of 21.1 Hz was reflected in the blood vitamin D concentration at optimum levels, and a confidence level of about 75% for vitamin D in the body was confirmed. These data demonstrate that the concentration of vitamin D in the body can be predicted using impedance measurement values. Conclusions: Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) with multiple involvement of cranial nerves is more severe and intractable than RHS without such involvement. Objectives: Typically, RHS involves VII and VIII nerves and unilaterally, and RHS accompanied by multiple cranial neuropathy is very rare. We describe 11 patients who developed RHS with multicranial nerve involvement and we analyzed their clinical characteristics and compared them with those of patients with RHS not accompanied by multiple cranial neuropathy. Methods: During the period 1995-2009, we treated 339 patients with RHS; of these, 11 patients had concurrent multiple cranial neuropathy. We assessed the clinical characteristics of RHS patients with and without multiple cranial neuropathy. Results: The mean age of the 11 patients with multiple cranial neuropathy (6 men, 5 women) was 49.2 ± 19.4 years, although 7 were aged 50 years or older. Eight patients had right-sided and three had left-sided facial paralysis. The initial degree of facial paralysis was House-Brackmann (HB) grade IV in four patients (36.4%) and HB grade V in seven (63.6%). Six patients showed improvement in symptoms, whereas five (45.6%) showed no improvement. The recovery rates from facial paralysis in patients with and without multiple cranial neuropathy were 54.5% and 82.9%, respectively, and the complete recovery rates were 27.3% and 67.7%, respectively. The objective of this study was to examine the associations between symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, and suicide in Korean female adolescents. It was hypothesized that the relationship between ADHD symptoms and suicidal ideation would be mediated by the level of depressive symptoms. Seven hundred and eighty-eight high school girls completed the Conners/Wells Adolescent Self-Report Scale: Short Form, Children's Depression Inventory, and Reynolds Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire. Path analyses were conducted using the statistical program, AMOS version 4.0, to determine the best fitting model. The conduct, cognitive, and hyperactivity problems of the ADHD symptoms in each domain were associated positively with the depressive symptoms, with the depressive symptoms being associated with suicidal ideation. This initially proposed model represented an acceptable fit to the data (root mean square error of approximation, RMSEA=0.077; normed fit index, NFI=0.998; non-NFI, NNFI=0.990; comparative fit index, CFI=0.998). The inclusion of a direct path from the conduct problems of ADHD symptoms to suicidal ideation significantly improved the model fit (RMSEA=0, NFI=1, NNFI=1, CFI=1). The results of our study suggest that depressive symptoms partially mediate the relationship between ADHD symptoms and suicidal ideation, and that the conduct problems of ADHD symptoms are associated with suicidal ideation both directly and indirectly via the depressive symptoms in Korean female adolescents. Malignant melanoma accounts for about 1–3% of all malignancies in the West, especially in the United States. More than 9000 people die each year. In general, it is difficult to characterize a skin lesion from a photograph. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based computer-aided diagnostic algorithm for the classification of malignant melanoma and benign skin tumors from RGB channel skin images. The proposed deep learning model constitutes a tumor lesion segmentation model and a classification model of malignant melanoma. First, U-Net was used to classify skin lesions in dermoscopy images. We implement an algorithm to classify malignant melanoma and benign tumors using skin lesion images and expert labeling results from convolutional neural networks. The U-Net model achieved a dice similarity coefficient of 81.1% compared to the expert labeling results. The classification accuracy of malignant melanoma reached 80.06%. Hip joint ultrasonographic (US) imaging is the golden standard for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) screening. However, the effectiveness of this technique is subject to interoperator and intraobserver variability. Thus, a multi-detection deep learning artificial intelligence (AI)-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system was developed and evaluated. The deep learning model used a two-stage training process to segment the four key anatomical structures and extract their respective key points. In addition, the check angle of the ilium body balancing level was set to evaluate the system's cognitive ability. Hence, only images with visible key anatomical points and a check angle within ±5° were used in the analysis. Of the original 921 images, 320 (34.7%) were deemed appropriate for screening by both the system and human observer. Moderate agreement (80.9%) was seen in the check angles of the appropriate group (Cohen's κ = 0.525). Similarly, there was excellent agreement in the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) value between the measurers of the alpha angle (ICC = 0.764) and a good agreement in beta angle (ICC = 0.743). Rapamycin is a clinically important macrolide agent with immunosuppressant and antiproliferative properties, produced by the actinobacterium, Streptomyces rapamycinicus. Two cytochrome P450 enzymes are involved in the biosynthesis of rapamycin. CYP107G1 and CYP122A2 catalyze the oxidation reactions of C27 and C9 of pre-rapamycin, respectively. To understand the structural and biochemical features of P450 enzymes in rapamycin biosynthesis, the CYP107G1 and CYP122A2 genes were cloned, their recombinant proteins were expressed in Escherichia coli , and the purified enzymes were characterized. Both enzymes displayed low spin states in the absolute spectra of ferric forms, and the titrations with rapamycin induced type I spectral changes with K d values of 4.4 ± 0.4 and 3.0 ± 0.3 μM for CYP107G1 and CYP122A2, respectively. The X-ray crystal structures of CYP107G1 and its co-crystal complex with everolimus, a clinical rapamycin derivative, were determined at resolutions of 2.9 and 3.0 Å, respectively. The overall structure of CYP107G1 adopts the canonical scaffold of cytochrome P450 and possesses large substrate pocket. The distal face of the heme group is exposed to solvents to accommodate macrolide access. When the structure of the everolimus-bound CYP107G1 complex (CYP107G1-Eve) was compared to that of the ligand-free CYP107G1 form, no significant conformational change was observed. Hence, CYP107G1 has a relatively rigid structure with versatile loops to accommodate a bulky substrate. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biogenetic temperament and character profiles in Korean adolescents with problematic Internet use. Six hundred eighty-six high school students completed the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Junior Temperament and Character Inventory (JTCI), and Conners/Wells Adolescent Self-Report Scale: Short Form (CASS: Short). The problematic Internet use group showed higher scores in the Self-Directedness and Cooperativeness profiles and lower scores in the Novelty Seeking and Self-Transcendence profiles of the JTCI, compared with the nonproblematic Internet use group, after controlling for the ADHD symptoms. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) effects an important role in neural regeneration and function enhancement, such as expression of nerve growth factor and nerve regeneration, in neuronal tissues, and inhibition of cell death by amyloid beta in neurons is inhibited by PBMT. However, there no studies evaluated the effects of PBMT on oxidative stress in the hippocampus. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of PBMT on oxidative stress in the hippocampus. This study assessed the anti-oxidative effect, the expression of BDNF and antioxidant enzymes, as well as the activation of cAMP response element binding (CREB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signal transduction pathways assess using a hippocampal cell line (HT-22) and mouse organotypic hippocampal tissues by PBMT (LED, 660 nm, 20 mW/cm2). PBMT inhibited HT-22 cell death by oxidative stress and increased BDNF expression via ERK and CREB signaling pathway activation. In addition, PBMT increased BDNF expression in hippocampal organotypic slices and the levels of phosphorylated ERK and CREB, which were reduced by oxidative stress, as well as the expression of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. These data demonstrate that PBMT inhibits hippocampal damage induced by oxidative stress and increases the expression of BDNF, which can be used as an alternative to treat a variety of related disorders that lead to nerve damage.
