High-redshift radio(-loud) galaxies (H$z$RGs) are massive galaxies with powerful radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and serve as beacons for protocluster identification. However, the interplay between H$z$RGs and the large-scale environment remains unclear. To understand the connection between H$z$RGs and the surrounding obscured star formation, we investigated the overdensity and spatial distribution of submillimeter-bright galaxies (SMGs) in the field of 4C\,23.56, a well-known H$z$RG at $z=2.48$. We used SCUBA-2 data ($\sigma\,{\sim}\,0.6$\,mJy) to estimate the $850\,{\rm \mu m}$ source number counts and examine the radial and azimuthal overdensities of the $850\,{\rm \mu m}$ sources in the vicinity of the H$z$RG. The angular distribution of SMGs is inhomogeneous around the H$z$RG 4C\,23.56, with fewer sources oriented along the radio jet. We also find a significant overdensity of bright SMGs (${\rm S}_{850\rm\,\mu m}\geq5\,$mJy). Faint and bright SMGs exhibit different spatial distributions. The former are concentrated in the core region, while the latter prefer the outskirts of the H$z$RG field. Submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths provide a unique view of the Universe, from the gas and dust that fills and surrounds galaxies to the chromosphere of our own Sun. Current single-dish facilities have presented a tantalising view of the brightest (sub-)mm sources, and interferometers have provided the exquisite resolution necessary to analyse the details in small fields, but there are still many open questions that cannot be answered with current facilities. In this report we summarise the science that is guiding the design of the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST). We demonstrate how tranformational advances in topics including star formation in high redshift galaxies, the diffuse circumgalactic medium, Galactic ecology, cometary compositions and solar flares motivate the need for a 50m, single-dish telescope with a 1-2 degree field of view and a new generation of highly multiplexed continuum and spectral cameras. AtLAST will have the resolution to drastically lower the confusion limit compared to current single-dish facilities, whilst also being able to rapidly map large areas of the sky and detect extended, diffuse structures. Its high sensitivity and large field of view will open up the field of submillimeter transient science by increasing the probability of serendipitous detections. Finally, the science cases listed here motivate the need for a highly flexible operations model capable of short observations of individual targets, large surveys, monitoring programmes, target of opportunity observations and coordinated observations with other observatories. Sub-mm and mm wavelengths provide a unique view of the Universe, from the gas and dust that fills and surrounds galaxies to the chromosphere of our own Sun. Current single-dish facilities have presented a tantalising view of the brightest (sub-)mm sources, and interferometers have provided the exquisite resolution necessary to analyse the details in small fields, but there are still many open questions that cannot be answered with current facilities: Where are all the baryons? How do structures interact with their environments? What does the time-varying (sub-)mm sky look like? In order to make major advances on these questions and others, what is needed now is a facility capable of rapidly mapping the sky spatially, spectrally, and temporally, which can only be done by a high throughput, single-dish observatory. An extensive design study for this new facility is currently being undertaken. In this paper, we focus on the key science drivers and the requirements they place on the observatory. The study of transient and variable events, including novae, active galactic nuclei, and black hole binaries, has historically been a fruitful path for elucidating the evolutionary mechanisms of our universe. The study of such events in the millimeter and submillimeter is, however, still in its infancy. Submillimeter observations probe a variety of materials, such as optically thick dust, which are hard to study in other wavelengths. Submillimeter observations are sensitive to a number of emission mechanisms, from the aforementioned cold dust, to hot free-free emission, and synchrotron emission from energetic particles. Study of these phenomena has been hampered by a lack of prompt, high sensitivity submillimeter follow-up, as well as by a lack of high-sky-coverage submillimeter surveys. In this paper, we describe how the proposed Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST) could fill in these gaps in our understanding of the transient universe. We discuss a number of science cases that would benefit from AtLAST observations, and detail how AtLAST is uniquely suited to contributing to them. In particular, AtLAST's large field of view will enable serendipitous detections of transient events, while its anticipated ability to get on source quickly and observe simultaneously in multiple bands make it also ideally suited for transient follow-up. We make theoretical predictions for the instrumental and observatory properties required to significantly contribute to these science cases, and compare them to the projected AtLAST capabilities. Finally, we consider the unique ways in which transient science cases constrain the observational strategies of AtLAST, and make prescriptions for how AtLAST should observe in order to maximize its transient science output without impinging on other science cases., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

The study of planets and small bodies within our Solar System is fundamental for understanding the formation and evolution the Earth and other planets. Compositional and meteorological studies of the giant planets provide a foundation for understanding the nature of the most commonly observed exoplanets, while spectroscopic observations of the atmospheres of terrestrial planets, moons, and comets provide insights into the past and present-day habitability of planetary environments, and the availability of the chemical ingredients for life. While prior and existing (sub)millimeter observations have led to major advances in these areas, progress is hindered by limitations in the dynamic range, spatial and temporal coverage, as well as sensitivity of existing telescopes and interferometers. Here, we summarize some of the key planetary science use cases that factor into the design of the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST), a proposed 50-m class single dish facility: (1) to more fully characterize planetary wind fields and atmospheric thermal structures, (2) to measure the compositions of icy moon atmospheres and plumes, (3) to obtain detections of new, astrobiologically relevant gases and perform isotopic surveys of comets, and (4) to perform synergistic, temporally-resolved measurements in support of dedicated interplanetary space missions. The improved spatial coverage (several arcminutes), resolution ($\sim1.2''-12''$), bandwidth (several tens of GHz), dynamic range ($\sim10^5$) and sensitivity ($\sim1$ mK km s$^{-1}$) required by these science cases would enable new insights into the chemistry and physics of planetary environments, the origins of prebiotic molecules and the habitability of planetary systems in general., Comment: Submitted to Open Research Europe (AtLAST collection). 19 pages

Understanding the physical processes that regulate star formation and galaxy evolution are major areas of activity in modern astrophysics. Nearby galaxies offer unique opportunities to inspect interstellar medium (ISM), star formation (SF), radiative, dynamic and magnetic physics in great detail from sub-galactic (kpc) scales to sub-cloud (sub-pc) scales, from quiescent galaxies to starbursts, and from field galaxies to overdensities. In this case study, we discuss the major breakthroughs in this area of research that will be enabled by the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST), a proposed 50-m single-dish submillimeter telescope. The new discovery space of AtLAST comes from its exceptional sensitivity, in particular to extended low surface brightness emission, a very large 2 degree field of view, and correspondingly high mapping efficiency. This paper focuses on four themes which will particularly benefit from AtLAST: 1) the LMC and SMC, 2) extragalactic magnetic fields, 3) the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium, and 4) star formation and galaxy evolution. With ~1000-2000h surveys each, AtLAST could deliver deep dust continuum maps of the entire LMC and SMC fields at parsec-scale resolution, high-resolution maps of the magnetic field structure, gas density, temperature and composition of the dense and diffuse ISM in ~100 nearby galaxies, as well as the first large-scale blind CO survey in the nearby Universe, delivering molecular gas masses for up to 10^6 galaxies (3 orders of magnitude more than current samples). Our knowledge of galaxy formation and evolution has incredibly progressed through multi-wavelength observational constraints of the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies at all cosmic epochs. However, little is known about the physical properties of the more diffuse and lower surface brightness reservoir of gas and dust that extends beyond ISM scales and fills dark matter haloes of galaxies up to their virial radii, the circumgalactic medium (CGM). New theoretical studies increasingly stress the relevance of the latter for understanding the feedback and feeding mechanisms that shape galaxies across cosmic times, whose cumulative effects leave clear imprints into the CGM. Recent studies are showing that a -- so far unconstrained -- fraction of the CGM mass may reside in the cold (T < 1e4 K) molecular and atomic phase, especially in high-redshift dense environments. These gas phases, together with the warmer ionised phase, can be studied in galaxies from z ~ 0 to z ~ 10 through bright far-infrared and sub-millimeter emission lines such as [C II] 158${\mu}$m, [O III] 88 ${\mu}$m, [C I] 609${\mu}$m, [C I] 370${\mu}$m, and the rotational transitions of CO. Imaging such hidden cold CGM can lead to a breakthrough in galaxy evolution studies but requires a new facility with the specifications of the proposed Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST). As we learn more about the multi-scale interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy, we develop a greater understanding for the complex relationships between the large-scale diffuse gas and dust in Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs), how it moves, how it is affected by the nearby massive stars, and which portions of those GMCs eventually collapse into star forming regions. The complex interactions of those gas, dust and stellar populations form what has come to be known as the ecology of our Galaxy. Because we are deeply embedded in the plane of our Galaxy, it takes up a significant fraction of the sky, with complex dust lanes scattered throughout the optically recognisable bands of the Milky Way. These bands become bright at (sub-)millimetre wavelengths, where we can study dust thermal emission and the chemical and kinematic signatures of the gas. To properly study such large-scale environments, requires deep, large area surveys that are not possible with current facilities. Moreover, where stars form, so too do planetary systems, growing from the dust and gas in circumstellar discs, to planets and planetesimal belts. Understanding the evolution of these belts requires deep imaging capable of studying belts around young stellar objects to Kuiper belt analogues around the nearest stars. We report the identification of 64 new candidates of compact galaxies, potentially hosting faint quasars with bolometric luminosities of $L_\mathrm{bol} = 10^{43}$--10$^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$, residing in the reionization epoch within the redshift range of $6 \lesssim z \lesssim 8$. These candidates were selected by harnessing the rich multiband datasets provided by the emerging JWST-driven extragalactic surveys, focusing on COSMOS-Web, as well as JADES, UNCOVER, CEERS, and PRIMER. Our search strategy includes two stages: applying stringent photometric cuts to catalog-level data and detailed spectral energy distribution fitting. These techniques effectively isolate the quasar candidates while mitigating contamination from low-redshift interlopers, such as brown dwarfs and nearby galaxies. The selected candidates indicate physical traits compatible with low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, likely hosting $\approx10^5$--$10^7~M_\odot$ supermassive black holes (SMBHs) living in galaxies with stellar masses of $\approx10^8$--$10^{10}~M_\odot$. The SMBHs selected in this study, on average, exhibit an elevated mass compared to their hosts, with the mass ratio distribution slightly higher than those of galaxies in the local Universe. As with other high-$z$ studies, this is at least in part due to the selection method for these quasars. An extensive Monte Carlo analysis provides compelling evidence that heavy black hole seeds from the direct collapse scenario appear to be the preferred pathway to mature this specific subset of SMBHs by $z\approx7$. We report physical properties of the brightest ($S_{870\,\mu \rm m}=12.4$-$19.2\,$mJy) and not strongly lensed 18 870$\,\mu$m selected dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs), also known as submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), in the COSMOS field. This sample is part of an ALMA band$\,$3 spectroscopic survey (AS2COSPEC), and spectroscopic redshifts are measured in 17 of them at $z=2$-$5$. We perform spectral energy distribution analyses and deduce a median total infrared luminosity of $L_{\rm IR}=(1.3\pm0.1)\times10^{13}\,L_{\odot}$, infrared-based star-formation rate of ${\rm SFR}_{\rm IR}=1390\pm150~M_{\odot}\,\rm yr^{-1}$, stellar mass of $M_\ast=(1.4\pm0.6)\times10^{11}\,M_\odot$, dust mass of $M_{\rm dust}=(3.7\pm0.5)\times10^9\,M_\odot$, and molecular gas mass of $M_{\rm gas}= (\alpha_{\rm CO}/0.8)(1.2\pm0.1)\times10^{11}\,M_\odot$, suggesting that they are one of the most massive, ISM-enriched, and actively star-forming systems at $z=2$-$5$. In addition, compared to less massive and less active galaxies at similar epochs, SMGs have comparable gas fractions; however, they have much shorter depletion time, possibly caused by more active dynamical interactions. We determine a median dust emissivity index of $\beta=2.1\pm0.1$ for our sample, and by combining our results with those from other DSFG samples, we find no correlation of $\beta$ with redshift or infrared luminosity, indicating similar dust grain compositions across cosmic time for infrared luminous galaxies. We also find that AS2COSPEC SMGs have one of the highest dust-to-stellar mass ratios, with a median of $0.02\pm0.01$, significantly higher than model predictions, possibly due to too strong of a AGN feedback implemented in the model. We present observations and analysis of the starburst, PACS-819, at z=1.45 ($M_*=10^{10.7}$ M$_{ \odot}$), using high-resolution ($0^{\prime \prime}.1$; 0.8 kpc) ALMA and multi-wavelength JWST images from the COSMOS-Web program. Dissimilar to HST/ACS images in the rest-frame UV, the redder NIRCam and MIRI images reveal a smooth central mass concentration and spiral-like features, atypical for such an intense starburst. Through dynamical modeling of the CO J=5--4 emission with ALMA, PACS-819 is rotation-dominated thus has a disk-like nature. However, kinematic anomalies in CO and asymmetric features in the bluer JWST bands (e.g., F150W) support a more disturbed nature likely due to interactions. The JWST imaging further enables us to map the distribution of stellar mass and dust attenuation, thus clarifying the relationships between different structural components, not discernable in the previous HST images. The CO J = 5 -- 4 and FIR dust continuum emission are co-spatial with a heavily-obscured starbursting core (<1 kpc) which is partially surrounded by much less obscured star-forming structures including a prominent arc, possibly a tidally-distorted dwarf galaxy, and a clump, either a sign of an ongoing violent disk instability or a recently accreted low-mass satellite. With spatially-resolved maps, we find a high molecular gas fraction in the central area reaching $\sim3$ ($M_{\text{gas}}$/$M_*$) and short depletion times ($M_{\text{gas}}/SFR\sim$ 120 Myrs) across the entire system. We present the results of our Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic follow-up of candidate galaxies of i-band-dropout protocluster candidate galaxies at $z\sim6$ in the COSMOS field. We securely detect Lyman-$\alpha$ emission lines in 14 of the 30 objects targeted, 10 of them being at $z=6$ with a signal-to-noise ratio of $5-20$, the remaining galaxies are either non-detections or interlopers with redshift too different from $z=6$ to be part of the protocluster. The 10 galaxies at $z\approx6$ make the protocluster one of the riches at $z>5$. The emission lines exhibit asymmetric profiles with high skewness values ranging from 2.87 to 31.75, with a median of 7.37. This asymmetry is consistent with them being Ly$\alpha$, resulting in a redshift range of $z=5.85-6.08$. Using the spectroscopic redshifts, we re-calculate the overdensity map for the COSMOS field and find the galaxies to be in a significant overdensity at the $4\sigma$ level, with a peak overdensity of $\delta=11.8$ (compared to the previous value of $\delta=9.2$). The protocluster galaxies have stellar masses derived from Bagpipes SED fits of $10^{8.29}-10^{10.28} \rm \,M_{\rm \odot}$ and star formation rates of $2-39\,\rm M_{\rm \odot}\rm\,yr^{-1}$, placing them on the main sequence at this epoch. Using a stellar-to-halo-mass relationship, we estimate the dark matter halo mass of the most massive halo in the protocluster to be $\sim 10^{12}\rm M_{\rm \odot}$. We report the detection of cold dust in an apparently quiescent massive galaxy ($\log({M_{\star}/M_{\odot}})\approx11$) at $z\sim2$ (G4). The source is identified as a serendipitous 2 mm continuum source in a deep ALMA observation within the field of Q2343-BX610, a $z=2.21$ massive star-forming disk galaxy. Available multi-band photometry of G4 suggests redshift of $z\sim2$ and a low specific star-formation rate (sSFR), $\log(SFR/M_{\star}) [yr^{-1}] \approx -10.2$, corresponding to $\approx1.2$ dex below the $z=2$ main sequence (MS). G4 appears to be a peculiar dust-rich quiescent galaxy for its stellar mass ($\log({M_{\rm dust}/M_{\star}}) = -2.71 \pm 0.26$), with its estimated mass-weighted age ($\sim$ 1-2 Gyr). We compile $z\gtrsim1$ quiescent galaxies in the literature and discuss their age-$\Delta$MS and $\log({M_{\rm dust}/M_{\star}})$-age relations to investigate passive evolution and dust depletion scale. A long dust depletion time and its morphology suggest morphological quenching along with less efficient feedback that could have acted on G4. The estimated dust yield for G4 further supports this idea, requiring efficient survival of dust and/or grain growth, and rejuvenation (or additional accretion). The ALMA lensing cluster survey (ALCS) is a 96-hr large program dedicated to uncovering and characterizing intrinsically faint continuum sources and line emitters with the assistance of gravitational lensing. All 33 cluster fields were selected from HST/Spitzer treasury programs including CLASH, Hubble Frontier Fields, and RELICS, which also have Herschel and Chandra coverages. The total sky area surveyed reaches $\sim$133 arcmin$^2$ down to a depth of $\sim$60 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (1$\sigma$) at 1.2 mm, yielding 141 secure blind detections of continuum sources and additional 39 sources aided by priors. We present scientific motivation, survey design, the status of spectroscopy follow-up observations, and number counts down to $\sim$7 $\mu$Jy. We present NOEMA CO (2-1) line and ALMA 870 $\mu$m continuum observations of a main-sequence galaxy at $z=1.38$. The galaxy was initially selected as a "gas-giant", based on the gas mass derived from sub-mm continuum (log$(M_{\rm gas}/M_{\odot})=11.20\pm0.20$), however the gas mass derived from CO (2-1) luminosity brings down the gas mass to a value consistent with typical star-forming galaxies at that redshift (log$(M_{\rm gas}/M_{\odot})=10.84\pm0.03$). Despite that the dust-to-stellar mass ratio remains elevated above the scaling relations by a factor of 5. We explore the potential physical picture and consider an underestimated stellar mass and optically thick dust as possible causes. Based on the updated gas-to-stellar mass ratio we rule out the former, and while the latter can contribute to the dust mass overestimate it is still not sufficient to explain the observed physical picture. Instead, possible explanations include enhanced HI reservoirs, CO-dark H$_2$ gas, an unusually high metallicity, or the presence of an optically dark, dusty contaminant. Using the ALMA data at 870 $\mu$m coupled with $HST$/ACS imaging, we find extended morphology in dust continuum and clumpy star-formation in rest-frame UV in this galaxy, and a tentative $\sim 10$ kpc dusty arm is found bridging the galaxy center and a clump in F814W image. The galaxy shows levels of dust obscuration similar to the so-called $HST$-dark galaxies at higher redshifts, and would fall into the optically faint/dark $JWST$ color-color selection at $z>2$. It is therefore possible that our object could serve as low-$z$ analog of the $HST$-dark populations. We present the results of 300 pc resolution ALMA imaging of the [OIII] 88 $\mu$m line and dust continuum emission from a $z = 8.312$ Lyman break galaxy MACS0416_Y1. The velocity-integrated [OIII] emission has three peaks which are likely associated with three young stellar clumps of MACS0416_Y1, while the channel map shows a complicated velocity structure with little indication of a global velocity gradient unlike what was found in [CII] 158 $\mu$m at a larger scale, suggesting random bulk motion of ionized gas clouds inside the galaxy. In contrast, dust emission appears as two individual clumps apparently separating or bridging the [OIII]/stellar clumps. The cross correlation coefficient between dust and ultraviolet-related emission (i.e., [OIII] and ultraviolet continuum) is unity on a galactic scale, while it drops at < 1 kpc, suggesting well mixed geometry of multi-phase interstellar media on sub-kpc scales. If the cutoff scale characterizes different stages of star formation, the cutoff scale can be explained by gravitational instability of turbulent gas. We also report on a kpc-scale off-center cavity embedded in the dust continuum image. This could be a superbubble producing galactic-scale outflows, since the energy injection from the 4 Myr starburst suggested by a spectral energy distribution analysis is large enough to push the surrounding media creating a kpc-scale cavity., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, published in ApJ

We report the discovery of a triply imaged active galactic nucleus (AGN), lensed by the galaxy cluster MACS J0035.4-2015 ($z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.352$). The object is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging taken for the RELICS program. It appears to have a quasi-stellar nucleus consistent with a point-source, with a de-magnified radius of $r_e\lesssim100$ pc. The object is spectroscopically confirmed to be an AGN at $z_{\mathrm{spec}}=2.063\pm0.005$ showing broad rest-frame UV emission lines, and is detected in both X-ray observations with Chandra and in ALCS ALMA band 6 (1.2 mm) imaging. It has a relatively faint rest-frame UV luminosity for a quasar-like object, $M_{\mathrm{UV},1450}=-19.7\pm0.2$. The object adds to just a few quasars or other X-ray sources known to be multiply lensed by a galaxy cluster. Some diffuse emission from the host galaxy is faintly seen around the nucleus and there is a faint object nearby sharing the same multiple-imaging symmetry and geometric redshift, possibly an interacting galaxy or a star-forming knot in the host. We present an accompanying lens model, calculate the magnifications and time delays, and infer physical properties for the source. We find the rest-frame UV continuum and emission lines to be dominated by the AGN, and the optical emission to be dominated by the host galaxy of modest stellar mass $M_{\star}\simeq10^{9.2} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. We also observe some variation in the AGN emission with time, which may suggest that the AGN used to be more active. This object adds a low-redshift counterpart to several relatively faint AGN recently uncovered at high redshifts with HST and JWST., Comment: Published in MNRAS. The radio galaxy NGC 1052 casts absorption features of sulfur-bearing molecules, H$_2$S, SO, SO$_2$, and CS toward the radio continuum emission from the core and jets. Using ALMA, we have measured the equivalent widths of SO absorption features in multiple transitions and determined the temperatures of $344 \pm 43$ K and $26 \pm 4$ K in sub-millimeter and millimeter wavelengths, respectively. Since sub-mm and mm continuum represents the core and jets, the high and low temperatures of the absorbers imply warm environment in the molecular torus and cooler downstream flows. The high temperature in the torus is consistent with the presence of 22-GHz H$_2$O maser emission, vibrationally excited HCN and HCO$^+$ absorption lines, and sulfur-bearing molecules in gas phase released from dust. The origin of the sulfur-bearing gas is ascribed to evaporation of icy dust component through jet-torus interaction. Shock heating is the sole plausible mechanism to maintain such high temperature of gas and dust in the torus. We present ALMA deep spectroscopy for a lensed galaxy at $z_{\rm spec}=8.496$ with $\log(M_{\rm star}/M_{\odot})\sim7.8$ whose optical nebular lines and stellar continuum are detected by JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam Early Release Observations in SMACS0723. Our ALMA spectrum shows [OIII]88$\mu$m and [CII]158$\mu$m line detections at $4.0\sigma$ and $4.5\sigma$, respectively. The redshift and position of the [OIII] line coincide with those of the JWST source, while the [CII] line is blue-shifted by 90 km s$^{-1}$ with a spatial offset of $0.''5$ ($\approx0.5$ kpc in source plane) from the JWST source. The NIRCam F444W image, including [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and H$\beta$ line emission, spatially extends beyond the stellar components by a factor of $>8$. This indicates that the $z=8.5$ galaxy has already experienced strong outflows whose oxygen and carbon produce the extended [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and the offset [CII] emission, which would promote ionizing photon escape and facilitate reionization. With careful slit-loss corrections and removals of emission spatially outside the galaxy, we evaluate the [OIII]88$\mu$m/$\lambda$5007 line ratio, and derive the electron density $n_{\rm e}$ by photoionization modeling to be $220^{+170}_{-100}$ cm$^{-3}$, which is comparable with those of $z\sim2-3$ galaxies. We estimate an [OIII]88$\mu$m/[CII]158$\mu$m line ratio in the galaxy of $>4$, as high as those of known $z\sim6-9$ galaxies. This high [OIII]88$\mu$m/[CII]158$\mu$m line ratio is generally explained by the high $n_{\rm e}$ as well as the low metallicity ($Z_{\rm gas}/Z_{\odot}=0.04^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$), high ionization parameter ($\log U > -2.27$), and low carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratio ($\log$(C/O) $=[-0.52:-0.24]$) obtained from the JWST/NIRSpec data; further [CII] follow-up observations will constrain the covering fraction of photodissociation regions., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. We present a high-resolution kinematic study of the massive main-sequence star-forming galaxy (SFG) SDSS J090122.37+181432.3 (J0901) at z=2.259, using 0.36 arcsec ALMA CO(3-2) and 0.1-0.5 arcsec SINFONI/VLT H-alpha observations. J0901 is a rare, strongly-lensed but otherwise normal massive (log(M_star/M_sun)~11) main sequence SFG, offering a unique opportunity to study a typical massive SFG under the microscope of lensing. Through forward dynamical modeling incorporating lensing deflection, we fit the CO and H-alpha kinematics in the image plane out to about one disk effective radius (R_e ~ 4 kpc) at a ~600pc delensed physical resolution along the kinematic major axis. Our results show high intrinsic dispersions of the cold molecular and warm ionized gas (sig0_mol ~ 40 km/s and sig0_ion ~ 66 km/s) that remain constant out to R_e; a moderately low dark matter fraction (f_DM(R_e) ~ 0.3-0.4) within R_e; and a centrally-peaked Toomre Q-parameter -- agreeing well with the previously established sig0 vs. z, f_DM vs. Sig_baryon, and Q's radial trends using large-sample non-lensed main sequence SFGs. Our data further reveal a high stellar mass concentration within ~1-2 kpc with little molecular gas, and a clumpy molecular gas ring-like structure at R ~ 2-4 kpc, in line with the inside-out quenching scenario. Our further analysis indicates that J0901 had assembled half of its stellar mass only ~400 Myrs before its observed cosmic time, and cold gas ring and dense central stellar component are consistent with signposts of a recent wet compaction event of a highly turbulent disk found in recent simulations., Comment: 29 pages and 21 figures in total (14 pages and 10 figures in main text and the rest in appendix). We conduct a $^{12}$C$^{16}$O($J$=1-0) (hereafter CO) mapping survey of 64 galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the ALMA Morita array in cycle 5. CO emission is detected from 23 out of the 64 galaxies. Our sample includes dwarf, spiral and elliptical galaxies with stellar masses of $M_{\rm star}\sim10^{6.3-11.6}$~M$_\odot$. The achieved beam size and sensitivity are $15''\times8''$ and $\sim12$~mJy~beam$^{-1}$ at the velocity resolution of $\sim10$~km~s$^{-1}$, respectively. We study the cold-gas (molecular- and atomic-gas) properties of 38 subsamples with $M_{\rm star}>10^9$~M$_\odot$ combined with literature HI data. We find that: (1) the low star-formation (SF) activity in the Fornax galaxies is caused by the decrease in the cold-gas mass fraction with respect to stellar mass (hereafter, gas fraction) rather than the decrease of the SF efficiency from the cold gas; (2) the atomic-gas fraction is more heavily reduced than the molecular-gas fraction of such galaxies with low SF activity. A comparison between the cold-gas properties of the Fornax galaxies and their environmental properties suggests that the atomic gas is stripped tidally and by the ram pressure, which leads to the molecular gas depletion with an aid of the strangulation and consequently SF quenching. We report the detection of the CO(12-11) line emission toward G09-83808 (or H-ATLAS J090045.4+004125), a strongly-lensed submillimeter galaxy at $z = 6.02$, with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations. Combining previously detected [O III]$\,88\:\mathrm{\mu m}$, [N II]$\,205\:\mathrm{\mu m}$, and dust continuum at 0.6$\:$mm and 1.5$\:$mm, we investigate the physical properties of the multi-phase interstellar medium in G09-83808. A source-plane reconstruction reveals that the region of the CO(12-11) emission is compact ($R_\mathrm{{e, CO}}=0.49^{+0.29}_{-0.19}\,\mathrm{kpc}$) and roughly coincides with that of the dust continuum. Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer modeling of CO spectral-line energy distribution reveals that most of the CO(12-11) emission comes from a warm (kinetic temperature of $T_{\mathrm{kin}}=320\pm170\:$K) and dense ($\log(n_{\mathrm{H2}}/\mathrm{cm^{-3}})=5.4\pm0.6$) gas, indicating that the warm and dense molecular gas is concentrated in the central 0.5-kpc region. The luminosity ratio in G09-83808 is estimated to be $L_\mathrm{{CO(12-11)}} / L_\mathrm{{CO(6-5)}}=1.1\pm0.2$. The high ratio is consistent with those in local active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and $6

We present an ALMA-Herschel joint analysis of sources detected by the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS) at 1.15 mm. Herschel/PACS and SPIRE data at 100-500 $\mu$m are deblended for 180 ALMA sources in 33 lensing cluster fields that are either detected securely (141 sources; in our main sample) or tentatively at S/N$\geq$4 with cross-matched HST/Spitzer counterparts, down to a delensed 1.15-mm flux density of $\sim0.02$ mJy. We performed far-infrared spectral energy distribution modeling and derived the physical properties of dusty star formation for 125 sources (109 independently) that are detected at $>2\sigma$ in at least one Herschel band. 27 secure ALCS sources are not detected in any Herschel bands, including 17 optical/near-IR-dark sources that likely reside at $z=4.2\pm1.2$. The 16-50-84 percentiles of the redshift distribution are 1.15-2.08-3.59 for ALCS sources in the main sample, suggesting an increasing fraction of $z\simeq1-2$ galaxies among fainter millimeter sources ($f_{1150}\sim 0.1$ mJy). With a median lensing magnification factor of $\mu = 2.6_{-0.8}^{+2.6}$, ALCS sources in the main sample exhibit a median intrinsic star-formation rate of $94_{-54}^{+84}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, lower than that of conventional submillimeter galaxies at similar redshifts by a factor of $\sim$3. Our study suggests weak or no redshift evolution of dust temperature with $L_\mathrm{IR}<10^{12}\,\mathrm{L}_\odot$ galaxies within our sample at $z \simeq 0 - 2$. At $L_\mathrm{IR}>10^{12}\,\mathrm{L}_\odot$, the dust temperatures show no evolution across $z \simeq 1 -4$ while being lower than those in the local Universe. For the highest-redshift source in our sample ($z=6.07$), we can rule out an extreme dust temperature ($>$80 K) that was reported for MACS0416 Y1 at $z=8.31$., Comment: 44 pages, 23 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of multiple CO(1-0), $^{13}$CO(1-0), and C$^{18}$O(1-0) lines and 2.9 mm and 1.3 mm continuum emission toward the nearby interacting luminous infrared galaxy NGC 3110, supplemented with similar spatial resolution H$\alpha$, 1.4GHz continuum, and $K$-band data. We estimate the typical CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor of 1.7 $M_{\odot}$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$)$^{-1}$ within the disk using LTE-based and dust-based H$_2$ column densities, and measure the 1-kpc scale surface densities of star formation rate ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), super star clusters ($\Sigma_{\rm SSC}$), molecular gas mass, and star formation efficiency (SFE) toward the entire gas disk. These parameters show a peak at the southern part of the southern spiral arm (SFE $\sim$ 10$^{-8.2}$ yr$^{-1}$, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ $\sim$ 10$^{-0.6}$ $M_{\odot}$ kpc$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$, $\Sigma_{\rm SSC}$ $\sim$ 6.0 kpc$^{-2}$), which is likely attributed to the on-going tidal interaction with the companion galaxy MCG-01-26-013, as well as toward the circumnuclear region. We also find that thermal free-free emission contributes to a significant fraction of the millimeter continuum emission at the southern peak position. Those measurements imply that the peak of the southern arm is an active and young star-forming region, whereas the central part of NGC 3110 is a site of long-continued star formation. We suggest that, during the early stage of the galaxy-galaxy interaction with large mass ratio that in NGC 3110, fragmentation along the main galaxy's arms is an important driver of merger-induced star formation and massive gas inflow results in dusty nuclear starbursts., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present observations of [NII] 205 $\mu$m, [OIII] 88 $\mu$m and dust emission in a strongly-lensed, submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at $z=6.0$, G09.83808, with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Both [NII] and [OIII] line emissions are detected at $>12\sigma$ in the 0.8$"$-resolution maps. Lens modeling indicates that the spatial distribution of the dust continuum emission is well characterized by a compact disk with an effective radius of 0.64$\pm$0.02 kpc and a high infrared surface brightness of $\Sigma_\mathrm{IR}=(1.8\pm0.3)\times10^{12}~L_\odot$ kpc$^{-2}$. This result supports that G09.83808 is the progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies at $z\sim4$, where the majority of its stars are expected to be formed through a strong and short burst of star formation. G09.83808 and other lensed SMGs show a decreasing trend of the [NII] line to infrared luminosity ratio with increasing continuum flux density ratio between 63 $\mu$m and 158 $\mu$m, as seen in local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). The decreasing trend can be reproduced by photoionization models with increasing ionization parameters. Furthermore, by combining the [NII]/[OIII] luminosity ratio with far-infrared continuum flux density ratio in G09.83808, we infer that the gas phase metallicity is already $Z\approx 0.5-0.7~Z_\odot$. G09.83808 is likely one of the earliest galaxies that has been chemically enriched at the end of reionization., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We introduce an ALMA band 3 spectroscopic survey, targeting the brightest submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the COSMOS field. Here we present the first results based on the 18 primary SMGs that have 870 $\mu$m flux densities of $S_{870}=12.4-19.3$ mJy and are drawn from a parent sample of 260 ALMA-detected SMGs from the AS2COSMOS survey. We detect emission lines in 17 and determine their redshifts to be in the range of $z=2-5$ with a median of ${3.3\pm0.3}$. We confirm that SMGs with brighter $S_{870}$ are located at higher redshifts. The data additionally cover five fainter companion SMGs, and we obtain line detection in one. Together with previous studies, our results indicate that for SMGs that satisfy our selection, their brightest companion SMGs are physically associated with their corresponding primary SMGs in $\ge40$% of the time, suggesting that mergers play a role in the triggering of star formation. By modeling the foreground gravitational fields, $<10$% of the primary SMGs can be strongly lensed with a magnification $\mu>2$. We determine that about 90\% of the primary SMGs have lines that are better described by double Gaussian profiles, and the median separation of the two Gaussian peaks is 430$\pm$40 km s$^{-1}$. This allows estimates of an average baryon mass, which together with the line dispersion measurements puts our primary SMGs on the similar mass-$\sigma$ correlation found on local early-type galaxies. Finally, the number density of our $z>4$ primary SMGs is found to be $1^{+0.9}_{-0.6}\times10^6$ cMpc$^{-3}$, suggesting that they can be the progenitors of $z\sim3-4$ massive quiescent galaxies., Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, ApJ in press

We report the detection of [O I]145.5um in the BR 1202-0725 system, a compact group at z=4.7 consisting of a quasar (QSO), a submillimeter-bright galaxy (SMG), and three faint Lya emitters. By taking into account the previous detections and upper limits, the [O I]/[C II] line ratios of the now five known high-z galaxies are higher than or on the high-end of the observed values in local galaxies ([O I]/[C II]$\gtrsim$0.13). The high [O I]/[C II] ratios and the joint analysis with the previous detection of [N II] lines for both the QSO and the SMG suggest the presence of warm and dense neutral gas in these highly star-forming galaxies. This is further supported by new CO (12-11) line detections and a comparison with cosmological simulations. There is a possible positive correlation between the [NII]122/205 line ratio and the [O I]/[C II] ratio when all local and high-z sources are taken into account, indicating that the denser the ionized gas, the denser and warmer the neutral gas (or vice versa). The detection of the [O I] line in the BR1202-0725 system with a relatively short amount of integration with ALMA demonstrates the great potential of this line as a dense gas tracer for high-z galaxies., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in ApJ, figures 2 and 4 show the main results

We present a detailed study of the molecular gas content and stellar population properties of three massive galaxies at 1 < z < 1.3 that are in different stages of quenching. The galaxies were selected to have a quiescent optical/near-infrared spectral energy distribution and a relatively bright emission at 24 micron, and show remarkably diverse properties. CO emission from each of the three galaxies is detected in deep NOEMA observations, allowing us to derive molecular gas fractions Mgas/Mstar of 13-23%. We also reconstruct the star formation histories by fitting models to the observed photometry and optical spectroscopy, finding evidence for recent rejuvenation in one object, slow quenching in another, and rapid quenching in the third system. To better constrain the quenching mechanism we explore the depletion times for our sample and other similar samples at z~0.7 from the literature. We find that the depletion times are highly dependent on the method adopted to measure the star formation rate: using the UV+IR luminosity we obtain depletion times about 6 times shorter than those derived using dust-corrected [OII] emission. When adopting the star formation rates from spectral fitting, which are arguably more robust, we find that recently quenched galaxies and star-forming galaxies have similar depletion times, while older quiescent systems have longer depletion times. We revisit the cold gas contents of galaxies in a protocluster at z=2.49 using the lowest neutral atomic carbon transition [CI]$^3$P$_1$-$^3$P$_0$ from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations. We aim to test if the same gas mass calibration applied in field galaxies can be applied to protocluster galaxies. Five galaxies out of sixteen targeted galaxies are detected in the [CI] line, and these are all previously detected in CO(3-2) and CO(4-3) and three in 1.1 mm dust continuum. We investigate the line luminosity relations between CO and [CI] in the protocluster and compare them with other previous studies. We then compare the gas mass based on three gas tracers of [CI], CO(3-2), and dust if at least one of the last two tracers are available. Using the calibration adopted for field main-sequence galaxies, the [CI]-based gas measurements are lower than or comparable to the CO-based gas measurements by -0.35 dex at the lowest with the mean deviation of -0.14 dex. The differences between [CI]- and the dust- based measurements are relatively mild by up to 0.16 dex with the mean difference of 0.02 dex. Taking these all together with calibration uncertainties, with the [CI] line, we reconfirm our previous findings that the mean gas fraction is comparable to field galaxies for a stellar-mass range of $\log(M_{\rm star}/M_\odot = [10.6, 11.3]$. However, at least for these secure five detections, the depletion time scale decreases more rapidly with stellar mass than field galaxies that might be related to earlier quenching in dense environments., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We present bright [CII] 158 $\mu$m line detections from a strongly magnified and multiply-imaged ($\mu\sim20-160$) sub-$L^{*}$ ($M_{\rm UV}$ = $-19.75^{+0.55}_{-0.44}$) Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) at $z=6.0719\pm0.0004$ from the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS). Emission lines are identified at 268.7 GHz at $\geq$ 8$\sigma$ exactly at positions of two multiple images of the LBG behind the massive galaxy cluster RXCJ0600$-$2007. Our lens models, updated with the latest spectroscopy from VLT/MUSE, indicate that a sub region of the LBG crosses the caustic and is lensed into a long ($\sim6''$) arc with a local magnification of $\mu\sim 160$, for which the [CII] line is also significantly detected. The source-plane reconstruction resolves the interstellar medium (ISM) structure, showing that the [CII] line is co-spatial with the rest-frame UV continuum at the scale of $\sim$300 pc. The [CII] line properties suggest that the LBG is a rotation-dominated system whose velocity gradient explains a slight difference of redshifts between the whole LBG and its sub region. The star formation rate (SFR)-$L_{\rm [CII]}$ relations from the sub to the whole regions of the LBG are consistent with those of local galaxies. We evaluate the lower limit of the faint-end of the [CII] luminosity function at $z=6$, and find that it is consistent with predictions from semi analytical models and from the local SFR-$L_{\rm [CII]}$ relation with a SFR function at $z=6$. These results imply that the local SFR-$L_{\rm [CII]}$ relation is universal for a wide range of scales including the spatially resolved ISM, the whole region of galaxy, and the cosmic scale, even in the epoch of reionization., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables, ApJ in press

We present 0.2arcsec-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations at 870 $\mu$m in a stellar mass-selected sample of 85 massive ($M_\mathrm{star}>10^{11}~M_\odot$) star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at z=1.9-2.6 in the 3D-HST/CANDELS fields of UDS and GOODS-S. We measure the effective radius of the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) emission for 62 massive SFGs. They are distributed over wide ranges of FIR size from $R_\mathrm{e,FIR}=$0.4 kpc to $R_\mathrm{e,FIR}=$6 kpc. The effective radius of the FIR emission is smaller by a factor of 2.3$^{+1.9}_{-1.0}$ than the effective radius of the optical emission and by a factor of 1.9$^{+1.9}_{-1.0}$ smaller than the half-mass radius. Even with taking into account potential extended components, the FIR size would change by ~10%. By combining the spatial distributions of the FIR and optical emission, we investigate how galaxies change the effective radius of the optical emission and the stellar mass within a radius of 1 kpc, $M_\mathrm{1kpc}$. The compact starburst puts most of massive SFGs on the mass--size relation for quiescent galaxies (QGs) at z~2 within 300 Myr if the current star formation activity and its spatial distribution are maintained. We also find that within 300 Myr, ~38% of massive SFGs can reach the central mass of $M_\mathrm{1kpc}=10^{10.5}~M_\odot$, which is around the boundary between massive SFGs and QGs. These results suggest an outside-in transformation scenario in which a dense core is formed at the center of a more extended disk, likely via dissipative in-disk inflows. We report the detection of a non-corotating gas component in a bright unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, hosting a compact starburst. ALMA 0.17 and 0.09 arcsec resolution observations of [CII] emission clearly demonstrate that the gas kinematics is characterized by an ordered rotation. After subtracting the best-fit model of a rotating disk, we kinematically identify two residual components in the channel maps. Both observing simulations and analysis of dirty images confirm that these two subcomponents are not artificially created by noise fluctuations and beam deconvolution. One of the two has a velocity offset of 200 km/s and a physical separation of 2 kpc from the primary disk and is located along the kinematic minor axis of disk rotation. We conclude that this gas component is falling into the galaxy from a direction perpendicular to the disk rotation. The accretion of such small non-corotating gas components could stimulate violent disk instability, driving radial gas inflows into the center of galaxies and leading to formation of in-situ clumps such as identified in dust continuum and CO. We report on the detection of the [CII] 157.7 $\mu$m emission from the Lyman break galaxy (LBG) MACS0416_Y1 at z = 8.3113, by using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The luminosity ratio of [OIII] 88 $\mu$m (from previous campaigns) to [CII] is 9.31 $\pm$ 2.6, indicative of hard interstellar radiation fields and/or a low covering fraction of photo-dissociation regions. The emission of [CII] is cospatial to the 850 $\mu$m dust emission (90 $\mu$m rest-frame, from previous campaigns), however the peak [CII] emission does not agree with the peak [OIII] emission, suggesting that the lines originate from different conditions in the interstellar medium. We fail to detect continuum emission at 1.5 mm (160 $\mu$m rest-frame) down to 18 $\mu$Jy (3$\sigma$). This nondetection places a strong limit on the dust spectrum, considering the 137 $\pm$ 26 $\mu$Jy continuum emission at 850 $\mu$m. This suggests an unusually warm dust component (T $>$ 80 K, 90% confidence limit), and/or a steep dust-emissivity index ($\beta_{\rm dust}$ $>$ 2), compared to galaxy-wide dust emission found at lower redshifts (typically T $\sim$ 30 - 50 K, $\beta_{\rm dust}$ $\sim$ 1 - 2). If such temperatures are common, this would reduce the required dust mass and relax the dust production problem at the highest redshifts. We therefore warn against the use of only single-wavelength information to derive physical properties, recommend a more thorough examination of dust temperatures in the early Universe, and stress the need for instrumentation that probes the peak of warm dust in the Epoch of Reionization., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, Accepted by MNRAS

We report the first detection obtained with ALMA of the [N II] 122$\mu$m line emission from a galaxy group BRI 1202-0725 at $z=4.69$ consisting of a QSO and a submilimeter-bright galaxy (SMG). Combining with a detection of [N II] 205$\mu$m line in both galaxies, we constrain the electron densities of the ionized gas based on the line ratio of [NII]122/205. The derived electron densities are $26^{+12}_{-11}$ and $134^{+50}_{-39}$ cm$^{-3}$ for the SMG and the QSO, respectively. The electron density of the SMG is similar to that of the Galactic Plane and to the average of the local spirals. Higher electron densities by up to a factor of three could, however, be possible for systematic uncertainties of the line flux estimates. The electron density of the QSO is comparable to high-$z$ star-forming galaxies at $z=1.5-2.3$, obtained using rest-frame optical lines and with the lower limits suggested from stacking analysis on lensed starbursts at $z=1-3.6$ using the same tracer of [NII]. Our results suggest a large scatter of electron densities in global scale at fixed star formation rates for extreme starbursts. The success of the [N II] 122$\mu$m and 205$\mu$m detections at $z=4.69$ demonstrates the power of future systematic surveys of extreme starbursts at $z>4$ for probing the ISM conditions and the effects on surrounding environments., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the ApJL

We present a study of the gas kinematics of star-forming galaxies associated with protocluster 4C 23.56 at $z=2.49$ using $0''.4$ resolution CO (4-3) data taken with ALMA. Eleven H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) are detected in CO (4-3), including six HAEs that were previously detected in CO (3-2) at a coarser angular resolution. The detections in both CO lines are broadly consistent in the line widths and the redshifts, confirming both detections. With an increase in the number of spectroscopic redshifts, we confirm that the protocluster is composed of two merging groups with a total halo mass of $\log{(M_{\rm cl}/M_{\odot})} =13.4-13.6$, suggesting that the protocluster would evolve into a Virgo-like cluster ($>10^{14} M_{\odot}$). We compare the CO line widths and the CO luminosities with galaxies in other (proto)clusters ($n_{\rm gal}=91$) and general fields ($n_{\rm gal}=80$) from other studies. The 4C23.56 protocluster galaxies have CO line widths and luminosities comparable to other protocluster galaxies on average. On the other hand, the CO line widths are on average broader by $\approx50\%$ compared to field galaxies, while the median CO luminosities are similar. The broader line widths can be attributed to both effects of unresolved gas-rich mergers and/or compact gas distribution, which is supported by our limited but decent angular resolution observations and the size estimate of three galaxies. Based on these results, we argue that gas-rich mergers may play a role in the retention of the specific angular momentum to a value similar to that of field populations during cluster assembly, though we need to verify this with a larger number of samples., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, ApJ in press

We report Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle-5 follow-up observations of two candidate [CII] emitters at z ~ 6 in the ALMA deep field in SSA22 (ADF22). The candidates were detected blindly in a Cycle-2 ALMA survey covering ~ 5 square arcmins, with a single tuning, along with two CO lines associated with galaxies at lower redshifts. Various tests suggested at least one of the two > 6-sigma [CII] candidates should be robust (Hayatsu et al. 2017). Nevertheless, our new, deeper observations recover neither candidate, demonstrating a higher contamination rate than expected. We present the results from ALMA observations of [NII]205 micron, [CII]158 micron, and [OII]88 micron lines in an unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, hosting a compact starburst core with an effective radius of 1 kpc. The [CII] and [NII] emission are spatially-resolved in 0.3 arcsec-resolution (1 kpc in radius). The kinematic properties of the [NII] emission are consistent with those of the CO(4-3) and [CII] emission, suggesting that the ionized gas feels the same gravitational potential as the associated molecular gas and photodissociation regions (PDRs). On the other hand, the spatial extent is different among the lines and dust continuum: the [CII] emitting gas is the most extended and the dust is the most compact, leading to a difference of the physical conditions in the interstellar medium. We derive the incident far-ultraviolet flux and the hydrogen gas density through PDR modeling by properly subtracting the contribution of ionized gas to the total [CII] emission. The observed [CII] emission is likely produced by dense PDRs with nH(PDR)=10^(5.5-5.75) cm^-3 and G0=10^(3.5-3.75) in the central 1 kpc region and nH(PDR)=10^(5.0-5.25) cm^-3 and G0=10^(3.25-3.5) in the central 3 kpc region. We have also successfully measured the line ratio of [OIII/[NII] in the central 3 kpc region of COSMOS-AzTEC-1 at z=4.3, which is the highest redshift where both nitrogen and oxygen lines are detected. Under the most likely physical conditions, the measured luminosity ratio of L([OIII])/L([NII])=6.4+-2.2 indicates a near solar metallicity with Zgas=0.7-1.0 Zsol, suggesting a chemically evolved system at z=4.3., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We have obtained three-dimensional maps of the universe in $\sim200\times200\times80$ comoving Mpc$^3$ (cMpc$^3$) volumes each at $z=5.7$ and $6.6$ based on a spectroscopic sample of 179 galaxies that achieves $\gtrsim80$\% completeness down to the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity of $\log(L_{\rm Ly\alpha}/[\mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}])=43.0$, based on our Keck and Gemini observations and the literature. The maps reveal filamentary large-scale structures and two remarkable overdensities made out of at least 44 and 12 galaxies at $z=5.692$ (z57OD) and $z=6.585$ (z66OD), respectively, making z66OD the most distant overdensity spectroscopically confirmed to date with $>10$ spectroscopically confirmed galaxies. We compare spatial distributions of submillimeter galaxies at $z\simeq 4-6$ with our $z=5.7$ galaxies forming the large-scale structures, and detect a $99.97\%$ signal of cross correlation, indicative of a clear coincidence of dusty star-forming galaxy and dust unobscured galaxy formation at this early epoch. The galaxies in z57OD and z66OD are actively forming stars with star formation rates (SFRs) $\gtrsim5$ times higher than the main sequence, and particularly the SFR density in z57OD is 10 times higher than the cosmic average at the redshift (a.k.a. the Madau-Lilly plot). Comparisons with numerical simulations suggest that z57OD and z66OD are protoclusters that are progenitors of the present-day clusters with halo masses of $\sim10^{14}\ \mathrm{M_\odot}$., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJ

We investigate gas contents of star-forming galaxies associated with protocluster 4C23.56 at z = 2.49 by using the redshifted CO(3-2) and 1.1 mm dust continuum with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The observations unveil seven CO detections out of 22 targeted H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) and four out of 19 in 1.1 mm dust continuum. They have high stellar mass ($M_{\star}>4\times 10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$) and exhibit a specific star-formation rate typical of main-sequence star forming galaxies at $z\sim2.5$. Different gas mass estimators from CO(3-2) and 1.1 mm yield consistent values for simultaneous detections. The gas mass ($M_{\rm gas}$) and gas fraction ($f_{\rm gas}$) are comparable to those of field galaxies, with $M_{\rm gas}=[0.3, 1.8]\times10^{11} \times (\alpha_{\rm CO}/(4.36\times A(Z)$)) M$_{\odot}$, where $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor and $A(Z)$ the additional correction factor for the metallicity dependence of $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, and $\langle f_{\rm gas}\rangle = 0.53 \pm 0.07$ from CO(3-2). Our measurements place a constraint on the cosmic gas density of high-$z$ protoclusters, indicating the protocluster is characterized by a gas density higher than that of the general fields by an order of magnitude. We found $\rho (H_2)\sim 5 \times 10^9 \,M_{\odot}\,{\rm Mpc^{-3}}$ with the CO(3-2) detections. The five ALMA CO detections occur in the region of highest galaxy surface density, where the density positively correlates with global star-forming efficiency (SFE) and stellar mass. Such correlations imply a potentially critical role of environment on early galaxy evolution at high-z protoclusters, although future observations are necessary for confirmation., Comment: 33 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables ; Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal
