Abstract

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text, Sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) is clinically characterized by rapidly progressive dementia combined with other cardinal symptoms, such as myoclonus, visual or cerebellar disturbances, extrapyramidal or pyramidal disturbance, and akinetic mutism. However, as an initial manifestation, focal neurologic deficits other than the aforementioned or nonspecific generalized symptoms may lead to a misdiagnosis or a delayed diagnosis. The authors report a case of 66-year-old male patient with sporadic CJD who had dizziness, gaze-evoked nystagmus (GEN), and other central eye signs (impaired smooth pursuit, saccadic dysmetria) as an initial manifestation without dementia. The central eye signs led us to perform brain magnetic resonance images, which showed abnormal cortical high-signal intensity in both the cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres including the vestibulocerebellum. We reached a presumptive diagnosis of CJD, but the findings did not meet diagnostic criteria for probable CJD at that time. Three weeks after the initial work-ups, the patient presented with typical neurological findings of CJD: rapidly progressive dementia, akinetic mutism, and myoclonus of the left arm. Cerebrospinal fluid was positive for 14-3-3 protein, and electroencephalography showed periodic sharp wave complexes. In this patient, GEN and other central eye signs provided diagnostic clues for CJD. These unusual neurological manifestations may help physicians have a thorough knowledge of early deficits of CJD.

36. Serial entrepreneurship of technology ventures

Abstract

In this dissertation, I examine differences between ventures of serial and novice founders with respect to important strategic decisions faced by new technology ventures. Specifically, I develop hypotheses about serial founders’ experience-based responses leading to their ventures’ entry into attractive markets, collaboration with external partners for the development of technology, and formation of diverse founding teams. Building on research linking founder experience and venture outcomes, I conceptualize prior venture founding experience as an upstream, enabling mechanism driving several of the strategy-performance relationships outlined in the literature. Further, I investigate the performance advantage of serial founders by jointly exploring the effects of venture capital firm partners and ventures’ location in commercial hubs. I test predictions using a dataset of 459 new ventures in the U.S. medical device industry, and find support for the serial effect on the three strategic decisions. Findings suggest that ventures of serial founders tend to have more diverse founding teams and are more likely to engage in external collaboration efforts to develop their technology. Results also suggest that ventures of serial founders are more likely than those of novices to enter more attractive market segments, which in turn contributes to the increased likelihood of their success. Contrary to expectations, boundary-spanning collaboration and founding team diversity are not found to translate to venture performance. Whereas ventures of novice founders appear to benefit significantly from partnerships with highly reputable venture capital firms, ventures of serial founders do not, especially when the serial founders received venture capital funding in their previous ventures. I discuss how the findings extend the literature, outline the limitations of the study, and conclude with suggestions for future research.

37. 0230 The relationship between shift work and metabolic syndrome among electronics industry workers

Abstract

ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine an association between shift work and the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the electronics industry.MethodsIn total, 12 583 employees who participated in health examination and questionnaire were evaluated. MetS was measured by the National Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP) criteria using examination results. We performed multiple logistic regression analyses to test the relationship between shift work and MetS.ResultsThe prevalence rate of MetS among total group was 8.8%. After controlling for the potential confounders, MetS of male daytime workers was more prevalent compared to shift workers. However, prevalence of the MetS showed significant increasing risk according to the number of years of shift work (a period of 5~9 years : OR 3.48, 95% CI 1.20–10.08; 10~14 years : OR 4.14, 95% CI 1.34–12.74; 15 years : OR 5.72, 95% CI 1.83–17.83 vs. 1~4 years). Although no significant differences in prevalence of the MetS between daytime and shift work were observed, the risk for the development of MetS increased with accumulated years of shift work among women (a period of 5~9 years : OR 3.12, 95% CI 1.72–5.67; 10~14 years : OR 5.57, 95% CI 2.91–10.66; 15 years : OR 5.17, 95% CI 2.48–10.81 vs. 1~4 years).ConclusionThis study suggests that the duration of shift work increases the risk for developing the MetS.
