Structural colors of 2D gratings are iridescent, color-tunable, and never fade, which renders them appealing for anti-counterfeiting applications. However, for advanced security, it still remains a challenge to completely hide the encrypted color patterns and reveal them on demand. In this work, a water-responsive photonic grating consisting of a micropillar array and a hydrogel overcoat with a similar refractive index, termed “hydrocipher”, is presented. The joint effect of stimuli-reversible refractive-index (mis)match and reconfigurable grating-based diffraction coloration enables a complete encryption of the structural color and rapid decryption. The photonic structure shows a strong iridescence due to the angle-dependent diffraction when the hydrogel overcoat is swollen from water. Upon drying, the micropillars bend and the refractive index contrast disappears, which dramatically lessens the diffraction intensity and renders the surface highly transparent. The dehydrated-to-hydrated state transition can occur within 1 s, enabling fast decryption. The color switching is highly reversible over a prolonged hydration/dehydration cycle, and the dehydrated hydrogel layer protects the delicate micropillar array from external mechanical stress. The creative combination of hydrogel material and the 2D grating structure offers a new and simple strategy for realizing reversible, durable, and fast-response cryptography with potentially broad impact on the anti-counterfeiting technology market.

Our study aimed to examine preoperative differences in strength and balance between dominant foot (DF) and nondominant foot (non-DF) of individuals undergoing ligament stabilization surgery in the general population. Patients with records of preoperative evaluation, including isokinetic dynamometric strength evaluation, Y-balance test (YBT), and Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS), were included in the study. The DF was the preferred leg for accurately kicking a ball through a goal. Statistical analysis determined the differences between DF and non-DF and the correlations between muscle strength, balance, and FAOS. There was no statistically significant difference between DF and non-DF regarding evertor and invertor muscle strength (p=0.082–0.951). The YBT revealed no significant difference between the two groups (p=0.082–0.951). There was a significant correlation between the evertor peak torque and total work deficits at 30°/s (p=0.022), as well as the evertor peak torque deficit at 120°/s (p=0.048). No significant differences in muscle strength and balance were found between DF and non-DF in nonathletes with chronic ankle instability. Peroneal muscle strength deficit was associated with functional impairment. Tailored interventions are needed to address limb dominance and muscle strength deficits in CAI management. Background: Patients with lower extremity burn injuries have decreased gait function. Gait dysfunctions are compensated by activation of executive areas such as the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Although robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) can improve gait function, the training mechanisms of RAGT are unknown. We aimed to determine the clinical effects of RAGT in patients with burns and investigate their underlying mechanisms. Methods: This single-blind, randomized controlled trial involved 54 patients with lower extremity burns. The RAGT group underwent RAGT using SUBAR® and conventional training. The control (CON) group underwent only conventional training. The primary outcome was cortical activity measured using a functional near-infrared spectroscopy device before and after 8 weeks of training to confirm the compensatory effect of gait dysfunction. The secondary outcomes were the functional ambulation category (FAC) to evaluate gait performance, 6-min walking test (6 MWT) distance to measure gait speed, isometric force and range of motion (ROM) of lower extremities to evaluate physical function, and the visual analog scale (VAS) score to evaluate subjective pain during gait. Results: PFC activation during the gait phase in the RAGT group decreased significantly compared with that of the CON. The VAS score decreased and FAC score improved after 8 weeks of training in both groups. The 6 MWT scores, isometric strengths (the left knee flexor and bilateral ankle plantar flexors), and the ROMs (the extensions of bilateral hip and bilateral knee) of the RAGT group were significantly improved compared with those of the CON. RAGT improved gait speed, lower extremity ROMs, and lower extremity muscles strengths in patients with burns. Conclusions: The improvement in gait speed and cerebral blood flow evaluation results suggests that the automatization of gait is related to the treatment mechanism during RAGT. The species within the family Cunninghamellaceae during an investigation of soil microfungi in Korea, in which three strains were isolated from Gangwon, Chungbuk, and Gyeongbuk provinces, designated as KNUF-22-121A, KNUF-22-126A, and KNUF-22-316, respectively. Because the morphological and molecular analyses of these three strains were identical, KNUF-22-316 underwent further detailed study. Phylogenetic analyses based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region and the large subunit 28S rRNA gene revealed that the strain belonged to the genus Absidia, but occupied a distinct phylogenetic position. The strain KNUF-22-316 was compared with closely related species Absidia radiata CGMCC 3.16257T and Absidia yunnanensis CGMCC 3.16259T, morphologically different with shorter sporangiophores, smaller sporangia and columellae, and the consistent presence of collars. The fungal strain designated as KNUF-21-020, belonging to the genus Triangularia, was isolated from a soil sample collected in the Chungnam province, Korea. Phylogenetic analyses based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of internal transcribed spacer regions and partial sequences of large subunit rRNA, beta-tubulin, and RNA polymerase II subunit genes revealed that the strain was grouped in a clade with Triangularia species. However, it occupied a distinct phylogenetic position. We also observed morphological differences between strain KNUF-21-020 and closely related species. Here, we provided detailed descriptions, illustrations, and discussions regarding the morphological and phylogenetic analyses of the closely related species to support the novelty of this isolated species. The phylogenetic analyses and morphological observations indicate that the strain KNUF-21-020 represents a novel species in the genus Triangularia (family: Podosporaceae). Effective dynamic modulation of visible light properties has been significantly desired for advanced imaging and sensing technologies. In particular, phase-change materials have attracted much attention as active material platforms owing to their broadband tunability of optical dielectric functions induced by the temperature-dependent phase-changes. However, their uses for visible light modulators are still limited to meet multi-objective high performance owing to the low material quality factor and active tunability in the visible regime. Here, a design strategy of phase-change metafilm absorber is demonstrated by making the use of the material drawbacks and extending design degree of freedom. By engineering tunability of effective anisotropic permittivity tensor of VO2-Ag metafilm around near-unity absorption conditions, strong dynamic modulation of reflection wave is achieved with near-unity modulation depth at desired wavelength regions without sacrificing bandwidth and efficiency. By leveraging effective medium theory of metamaterial and coupled mode theory, the intuitive design rules and theoretical backgrounds are suggested. It is also noteworthy that the dynamic optical applications of intensity modulation, coloring, and polarization rotation are enabled in a single device. By virtue of ultrathin flat configuration of a metafilm absorber, design extensibility of reflection spectrum is also verified. It is envisioned that our simple and powerful strategy would play a robust role in development of miniaturized light modulating pixels and a variety of photonic and optoelectronic applications.

The metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide has been highly anticipated for confining and guiding surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the subwavelength scale. However, perennial drawbacks such as a short propagation length and an unbounded transverse field have set limits on the use of the MIM waveguide in various applications. Herein, diffraction- and dispersion-free MIM modes are synthesized by using space–time wave packets (STWPs) and are therefore referred to as space–time MIM (ST-MIM) waveguide modes. Compared to a Gaussian pulse of the same duration and spectral bandwidth, the ST-MIM demonstrates enhanced propagation lengths of about 2.4 times for the symmetric mode and about 6.3 times for the antisymmetric mode. In the simulations, the ST-MIMs are confined in all transverse dimensions, thereby overriding the diffraction limits. In addition, the group velocities of the ST-MIMs can be arbitrarily designed, which makes it possible to synchronize the pulse propagation speeds of the symmetric and antisymmetric MIM modes. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the swallowing outcomes after transoral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT) and compare them with those of conventional transcervical thyroidectomy. Method: We enrolled 146 patients who underwent thyroidectomy (73 TORT; 73 conventional approach). We prospectively analyzed swallowing outcomes using the Swallowing Impairment Index‐6 (SIS‐6) questionnaire, a patient‐reported measure, before and 1, 3, and 6 days; 1, 3, and 6 months; and 1 year after surgery. Propensity score‐matched analysis was performed using three covariates: age, sex, and extent of thyroidectomy. Results: SIS‐6 scores worsened significantly immediately after surgery and progressively recovered 1 year postoperatively in both groups. Propensity score matching generated two matched groups of 22 patients each. In the propensity score‐matched samples, the SIS‐6 scores did not differ between the TORT and conventional groups, except at 1 day postoperatively. Conclusion: Patient‐reported swallowing outcomes of TORT were comparable to those of the conventional transcervical procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
