6. Using $p$-row graphs to study $p$-competition graphs

Abstract

For a positive integer $p$, the $p$-competition graph of a digraph $D$ is a graph which has the same vertex set as $D$ and an edge between distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ if and only if $x$ and $y$ have at least $p$ common out-neighbors in $D$. A graph is said to be a $p$-competition graph if it is the $p$-competition graph of a digraph. Given a graph $G$, we call the set of positive integers $p$ such that $G$ is a $p$-competition the competition-realizer of a graph $G$. In this paper, we introduce the notion of $p$-row graph of a matrix which generalizes the existing notion of row graph. We call the graph obtained from a graph $G$ by identifying each pair of adjacent vertices which share the same closed neighborhood the condensation of $G$. Using the notions of $p$-row graph and condensation of a graph, we study competition-realizers for various graphs to extend results given by Kim {\it et al.}~[$p$-competition graphs, {\it Linear Algebra Appl.} {\bf 217} (1995) 167--178]. Especially, we find all the elements in the competition-realizer for each caterpillar.

Abstract

Hefner [K. A. S. Hefner, K. F. Jones, S. -R. Kim, R. J. Lundgren and F. S. Roberts: $(i,j)$ competition graphs, Discrete Applied Mathematics, 32, (1991) 241-262] characterized acyclic digraphs each vertex of which has inderee and outdegree at most two and whose competition graphs are interval. They called acyclic digraphs each vertex of which has inderee and outdegree at most two $(2,2)$ digraphs. In this paper, we study the phylogeny graphs of $(2,2)$ digraphs. Especially, we give a sufficient condition and necessary conditions for $(2,2)$ digraphs having chordal phylogeny graphs. Phylogeny graphs are also called moral graphs in Bayesian network theory. Our work is motivated by problems related to evidence propagation in a Bayesian network for which it is useful to know which acyclic digraphs have their moral graphs being chordal., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

The goal of this study was to identify a candidate commercial cell line for the replication of African swine fever virus (ASFV) by comparing several available cell lines with various medium factors. In the sensitivity test of cells, MA104 and MARC-145 had strong potential for ASFV replication. Next, MA104 cells were used to compare the adaptation of ASFV obtained from tissue homogenates and blood samples in various infectious media. At the 10th passage, the ASFV obtained from the blood sample had a significantly higher viral load than that obtained from the tissue sample (P = 0.000), exhibiting a mean cycle threshold (Ct) value = 20.39 ± 1.99 compared with 25.36 ± 2.11. For blood samples, ASFV grew on infectious medium B more robustly than on infectious medium A (P = 0.006), corresponding to a Ct value = 19.58 ± 2.10 versus 21.20 ± 1.47. African swine fever virus originating from blood specimens continued to multiply gradually and peaked in the 15th passage, exhibiting a Ct value = 14.36 ± 0.22 in infectious medium B and a Ct value = 15.42 ± 0.14 in infectious medium A. When ASFV was cultured from tissue homogenates, however, there was no difference (P = 0.062) in ASFV growth between infectious media A and B. A model was developed to enhance ASFV replication through adaptation to MA104 cells. The lack of mutation at the genetic segments encoding p72, p54, p30, and the central hypervariable region (CVR) in serial culture passages is important in increasing the probability of maintaining immunogenicity when developing a vaccine candidate.

Abstract

Early diagnosis and intervention by visiting the emergency department (ED) are important for traumatic brain injury (TBI). We evaluate the factors associated with delayed ED visits in patients with intracranial TBI. A retrospective multicenter observational study using the ED-based injury in-depth surveillance database (EDIIS) was designed. Patients with intracranial TBI with an alert mentality at ED presentation from 2014 to 2019 were enrolled. Patients were categorized into four groups according to ED visit time after injury (<1 h, 1–3 h, 3–12 h, and >12 h). ED visits after 12 h were defined as delayed ED visits. The factors associated with delayed ED visits were identified using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Among 15,620 patients with TBI enrolled in the final analysis, 2,190 (14.0%) visited the ED 12 h after injury. Multivariable analysis identified the following factors as independent predictors for delayed ED visit such as unintentionally struck by or against an object or unintentional fall as a trauma mechanism, injury during ordinary activities, indoor injury, injury during nighttime, winter season, combined subdural hemorrhage and epidural hemorrhage. In patients with intracranial TBI with an alert mentality, multiple factors related to patient demographics and injury characteristics were associated with the time interval from injury to ED visit.
