28. Effectiveness and safety of auriculotherapy for breastfeeding: a systematic review

Abstract

To summarize and critically evaluate the evidence pertaining to the effectiveness and safety of auriculotherapy for breastfeeding.We performed a systematic search of 10 databases from their inception dates to May 15, 2017. Randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness and safety of auriculotherapy for breastfeeding were included. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool.This review included 31 randomized controlled trials with 5389 participants. Owing to the obvious clinical or statistical heterogeneity, a Meta-analysis was not conducted. Twenty-nine studies compared auriculotherapy plus routine care with routine care alone. No consistent adjunctive effect of auriculotherapy was observed in increasing the volume of milk production (9 studies showed significant results in favor of auriculotherapy and 5 did not) and serum prolactin level (7 studies showed significant results in favor of auriculotherapy and 2 did not), and in facilitating the initiation of milk secretion (10 studies showed significant results in favor of auriculotherapy and 7 did not). Two studies compared auriculotherapy with no treatment. Auriculotherapy as a monotherapy showed significant effects in increasing serum prolactin level and facilitating the onset of milk secretion; however, it was limited and inconclusive because only two studies were included in this comparison. The subgroup analysis of women who underwent cesarean delivery showed inconsistent results with respect to all outcomes. No serious adverse events were reported with the use of auriculotherapy. The methodological quality of the included studies was generally poor.Although some studies showed positive results, no definite conclusion about the effectiveness and safety of auriculotherapy for breastfeeding could be drawn, owing to the low methodological quality of the included studies and the heterogeneity among trials. Large-scale, well-designed studies are warranted on this topic.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify different physical and mental characteristics among three common Sasang types, Tae-eum, So-yang, and So-eum (except scarce type, Tae-Yang) in preschoolers, to improve constitutional diagnoses. Our study included 65 boys and 67 girls from six kindergartens in South Korea. The number of children who were categorized as Tae-Yang, Tae-Eum, So-Yang, and So-Eum types were 1, 56, 40, and 35, respectively. We measured height, weight, mid-parental height, predicted adult height, ponderal index (PI), and findings from the junior temperament and character inventory 3 to 6. The Tae-eum type exhibited higher weight percentiles and PIs than the other types (p < 0.001), and the So-eum type displayed higher harm avoidance (HA) scores than the Tae-eum type (p = 0.033). Children with high PIs and low HA scores have a higher probability of being classified as the Tae-eum type than as the So-eum type. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

38. Herbal Medicine Treatment for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Objective. To summarize and evaluate the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines used for the treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. Methods. Thirteen electronic databases were searched from their inception to November 2016. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the efficacy of herbal medicines alone or in combination with other Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments for ASD in children were included. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was used and other data analyses were performed using RevMan (Version 5.3). Results. Ten RCTs involving 567 patients with ASD were included for qualitative synthesis. In conjunction with conventional therapy, herbal medicines significantly improved the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) score, but the results of effects on total effective rate (TER) were different between the included studies. The use of herbal medicines with integrative therapy improved the CARS score and TER. In the studies that documented adverse events, no serious events were associated with herbal medicines. Conclusions. The efficacy of herbal medicines for the treatment of ASD appears to be encouraging but was inconclusive owing to low methodological quality, herbal medicine diversity, and small sample size of the examined studies.
