16. In situ deprotection of polymeric binders for solution‐processible sulfide‐based all‐solid‐state batteries

Abstract

Sulfide‐based all‐solid‐state batteries (ASSBs) have been featured as promising alternatives to the current lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) mainly owing to their superior safety. Nevertheless, a solution‐based scalable manufacturing scheme has not yet been established because of the incompatible polarity of the binder, solvent, and sulfide electrolyte during slurry preparation. This dilemma is overcome by subjecting the acrylate (co)polymeric binders to protection−deprotection chemistry. Protection by the tert‐butyl group allows for homogeneous dispersion of the binder in the slurry based on a relatively less polar solvent, with subsequent heat‐treatment during the drying process to cleave the tert‐butyl group. This exposes the polar carboxylic acid groups, which are then able to engage in hydrogen bonding with the active cathode material, high‐nickel layered oxide. Deprotection strengthens the electrode adhesion such that the strength equals that of commercial LIB electrodes, and the key electrochemical performance parameters are improved markedly in both half‐cell and full‐cell settings. The present study highlights the potential of sulfide‐based ASSBs for scalable manufacturing and also provides insights that protection−deprotection chemistry can generally be used for various battery cells that suffer from polarity incompatibility among multiple electrode components.

Abstract

To the Editor, Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a procedure for removing antibodies and toxic metabolites from the plasma.[1] Although TPE is generally regarded as a safe procedure, TPE-related allergic reactions (ARs) occur commonly, at a frequency of 1.4%-12.0%.[[2]] TPE-related ARs vary from mild discomfort to severe and lethal events such as anaphylaxis.[[1]] Nevertheless, the need for a TPE-related AR prophylaxis has not been well studied, and pretreatments for preventing these complications are not routinely recommended.[4] In this study, we aimed to identify the risk factors for TPE-related ARs and to determine whether pretreatments targeting these risk factors could reduce the incidence of these adverse events. This was based on previous evidence that TPE-related ARs occur more frequently when FFP, rather than albumin, is used as the replacement fluid.[2] Risk factor analysis for TPE-related ARs was conducted using logistic regression. Because the allergy history of the patient was a newly identified risk factor, pretreatment for AR prevention was initiated at our hospital from May 1, 2017, for any TPE patients with a history of allergy or in whom FFP was used as the replacement fluid (Figure S1). In conclusion, selective pretreatment of patients undergoing TPE after the identification of risk factors for TPE-related ARs is effective in reducing these complications, in contrast to previous beliefs that pretreatment is unnecessary. Abstract

All‐solid‐state batteries (ASSBs) are emerging as promising candidates for next‐generation energy storage systems. However, their practical implementation faces significant challenges, particularly their requirement for an impractically high stack pressure. This issue is especially critical in high‐energy density systems with limited negative‐to‐positive electrode capacity ratios (N/P ratios), where uneven lithium (Li) stripping induces the formation of interfacial voids. This study addresses these challenges by introducing an anode with a novel structural design that operates effectively under practically viable conditions while significantly reducing the N/P ratio to less than one. The approach entails the integration of a lithiophilic magnesium (Mg) film beneath a thin layer of the silicon‐graphite (SiGr) active materials. This structure facilitates the deposition of excess Li beneath the SiGr layer during overcharging, which enables stable cycling even at room temperature and at a low stack pressure of 3 MPa. By mitigating the poor contact that is characteristic of ASSBs with a low stack pressure, and simultaneously increasing the energy density by lowering the N/P ratio, the design significantly advances the key electrochemical properties of ASSBs.
