Dwarf barred galaxies are the perfect candidates for hosting slowly-rotating bars. They are common in dense environments and they have a relatively shallow potential well, making them prone to heating by interactions. When an interaction induces bar formation, the bar should rotate slowly. They reside in massive and centrally-concentrated dark matter halos, which slow down the bar rotation through dynamical friction. While predictions suggest that slow bars should be common, measurements of bar pattern speed, using the Tremaine-Weinberg method, show that bars are mostly fast in the local Universe. We present a photometric and kinematic characterisation of bars hosted by two dwarf galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, NGC 4483 and NGC 4516. We derive the bar length and strength using the Next Generation Virgo Survey imaging and the circular velocity, bar pattern speed, and rotation rate using spectroscopy from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer. Including the previously studied galaxy IC 3167, we compare the bar properties of the three dwarf galaxies with those of their massive counterparts from literature. Bars in the dwarf galaxies are shorter and weaker, and rotate slightly slower with respect to those in massive galaxies. This could be due to a different bar formation mechanism and/or to a large dark matter fraction in the centre of dwarf galaxies. We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of IC 3167, a dwarf galaxy hosting a lopsided weak bar and infalling into the Virgo cluster. We measured the bar radius and strength from broad-band imaging and bar pattern speed by applying the Tremaine-Weinberg method to stellar-absorption integral-field spectroscopy. We derived the ratio of the corotation radius to bar radius (R = 1.7 + 0.5 - 0.3) from stellar kinematics and bar pattern speed. The probability that the bar is rotating slowly is more than twice as likely as that the bar is fast. This allows us to infer that the formation of this bar was triggered by the ongoing interaction rather than to internal processes., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in MNRAS Letters

[Abridged] Filaments and hubs have received special attention recently thanks to studies showing their role in star formation. While the column density and velocity structures of both filaments and hubs have been studied, their magnetic fields (B-field) are not yet characterized. We aim to understand the role of the B-field in the dynamical evolution of the NGC 6334 hub-filament network. We present new observations of the dust polarized emission at 850$\mu$m towards NGC 6334 obtained with the JCMT/POL-2. We study the distribution and dispersion of the polarized intensity ($PI$), the polarization fraction ($PF$), and the B-field angle ($\theta_{B}$). We derive the power spectrum of the intensity and $\theta_{B}$ along the ridge crest. Our analyses show a complex B-field structure when observed over the whole region ($\sim10$ pc), however, at smaller scales ($\sim1$ pc), $\theta_{B}$ varies coherently along the filaments. The observed power spectrum of $\theta_{B}$ can be well represented with a power law function with a slope $-1.33\pm0.23$, which is $\sim20\%$ shallower than that of $I$. This result is compatible with the properties of simulated filaments and may indicate the processes at play in the formation of filaments. $\theta_{B}$ rotates from being mostly perpendicular to the filament crests to mostly parallel as they merge with the hubs. This variation of $\theta_{B}$ may be tracing local velocity flows of matter in-falling onto the hubs. Our analysis suggests a variation of the energy balance along the crests of these filaments, from magnetically critical/supercritical at their far ends to magnetically subcritical near the hubs. We detect an increase of $PF$ towards the high-column density star cluster-forming hubs that may result from the increase of grain alignment efficiency due to stellar radiation from the newborn stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

ARIADNE is a nuclear-magnetic-resonance-based experiment that will search for novel axion-induced spin-dependent interactions between an unpolarized source mass rotor and a nearby sample of spin-polarized $^3$He gas. To detect feeble axion signals at the sub-atto-Tesla level, the experiment relies on low magnetic background and noise. We measure and characterize the magnetic field background from a prototype tungsten rotor. We show that the requirement is met with our current level of tungsten purity and demagnetization process. We further show that the noise is dominantly caused by a few discrete dipoles, likely due to a few impurities trapped inside the rotor during manufacturing. This is done via a numerical optimization pipeline which fits for the locations and magnetic moments of each dipole. We find that under the current demagnetization, the magnetic moment of trapped impurities is bounded at $10^{-9} \mathrm{A}\mathrm{m}^2$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The latest generation of Galactic-plane surveys is enhancing our ability to study the effects of galactic environment upon the process of star formation. We present the first data from CO Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey 2 (CHIMPS2). CHIMPS2 is a survey that will observe the Inner Galaxy, the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), and a section of the Outer Galaxy in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $(J = 3\rightarrow2)$ emission with the Heterodyne Array Receiver Program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The first CHIMPS2 data presented here are a first look towards the CMZ in $^{12}$CO J = 3$\rightarrow$2 and cover $-3^{\circ}\leq\,\ell\,\leq\,5^{\circ}$ and $\mid$b$\mid \leq 0.5^{\circ}$ with angular resolution of 15 arcsec, velocity resolution of 1 km s$^{-1}$, and rms $\Delta T_A ^\ast =$ 0.58 K at these resolutions. Such high-resolution observations of the CMZ will be a valuable data set for future studies, whilst complementing the existing Galactic Plane surveys, such as SEDIGISM, the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane Survey, and ATLASGAL. The supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is one of the few remnants in which it is possible to observe unshocked ejecta. A deep 1.64 micron image of Cas A shows a patch of diffuse emission from unshocked ejecta, as well as brighter emission from Fast-Moving Knots and Quasi-Stationary Flocculi. Emission at 1.64 micron is usually interpreted as [Fe II] emission, and spectra of the bright knots confirm this by showing the expected emission in other [Fe II] lines. We performed NIR spectroscopy on the diffuse emission region and found that the unshocked ejecta emission does not show those lines, but rather the [Si I] 1.607 micron line. This means that the 1.64 micron line from the unshocked ejecta may be the [Si I] 1.645 line from the same upper level, rather than [Fe II]. We find that the [Si I] line is formed by recombination, and we use the [Si I] to [Si II] ratio to infer a temperature about 100 K, close to the value assumed for analysis of low frequency radio absorption and that inferred from emission by cool dust. Our results constrain estimates of Cas A's total mass of unshocked ejecta that are extremely sensitive to temperature assumptions, but they do not resolve the ambiguity due to clumping., Comment: 16 pages, 1 table, 4 figures

The QCD Axion is a particle postulated to exist since the 1970s to explain the Strong-CP problem in particle physics. It could also account for all of the observed Dark Matter in the universe. The Axion Resonant InterAction DetectioN Experiment (ARIADNE) experiment intends to detect the QCD axion by sensing the fictitious "magnetic field" created by its coupling to spin. The experiment must be sensitive to magnetic fields below the $10^{-19}$ T level to achieve its design sensitivity, necessitating tight control of the experiment's magnetic environment. We describe a method for controlling three aspects of that environment which would otherwise limit the experimental sensitivity. Firstly, a system of superconducting magnetic shielding is described to screen ordinary magnetic noise from the sample volume at the $10^8$ level. Secondly, a method for reducing magnetic field gradients within the sample up to $10^2$ times is described, using a simple and cost-effective design geometry. Thirdly, a novel coil design is introduced which allows the generation of fields similar to those produced by Helmholtz coils in regions directly abutting superconducting boundaries. The methods may be generally useful for magnetic field control near superconducting boundaries in other experiments where similar considerations apply., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures

The Axion Resonant InterAction Detection Experiment (ARIADNE) is a collaborative effort to search for the QCD axion using techniques based on nuclear magnetic resonance. In the experiment, axions or axion-like particles would mediate short-range spin-dependent interactions between a laser-polarized 3He gas and a rotating (unpolarized) tungsten source mass, acting as a tiny, fictitious "magnetic field". The experiment has the potential to probe deep within the theoretically interesting regime for the QCD axion in the mass range of 0.1-10 meV, independently of cosmological assumptions. The experiment relies on a stable rotary mechanism and superconducting magnetic shielding, required to screen the 3He sample from ordinary magnetic noise. We report the results of X-ray spectroscopy and Raman measurements of as-prepared graphene on a high quality copper surface and the same materials after 1.5 years under different conditions (ambient and low humidity). The obtained results were compared with density functional theory calculations of the formation energies and electronic structures of various structural defects in graphene/Cu interfaces. For evaluation of the stability of the carbon cover, we propose a two-step model. The first step is oxidation of the graphene, and the second is perforation of graphene with the removal of carbon atoms as part of the carbon dioxide molecule. Results of the modeling and experimental measurements provide evidence that graphene grown on high-quality copper substrate becomes robust and stable in time (1.5 years). However, the stability of this interface depends on the quality of the graphene and the number of native defects in the graphene and substrate. A critical aspect of quantum mechanics is the nonlocal nature of the wavefunction, a characteristic that may yield unexpected coupling of nominally-isolated systems. The capacity to detect this coupling can be vital in many situations, especially those in which its strength is weak. In this work we address this problem in the context of mesoscopic physics, by implementing an electron-wave realization of a Fano interferometer using pairs of coupled quantum point contacts (QPCs). Within this scheme, the discrete level required for a Fano resonance is provided by pinching off one of the QPCs, thereby inducing the formation of a quasi-bound state at the center of its self-consistent potential barrier. Using this system, we demonstrate a form of \textit{nonequilibrium} Fano resonance (NEFR), in which nonlinear electrical biasing of the interferometer gives rise to pronounced distortions of its Fano resonance. Our experimental results are captured well by a quantitative theoretical model, which considers a system in which a standard two-path Fano interferometer is coupled to an additional, \textit{intruder}, continuum. According to this theory, the observed distortions in the Fano resonance arise \textit{only} in the presence of coupling to the intruder, indicating that the NEFR provides a sensitive means to infer the presence of weak coupling between mesoscopic systems., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, published version

The results of density functional theory calculations and measurements using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of Co-nanoparticles dispersed on graphene/Cu are presented. It is found that for low cobalt thickness (0.02 nm - 0.06 nm) the Co forms islands distributed non-homogeneously which are strongly oxidized under exposure to air to form cobalt oxides. At greater thicknesses up to 2 nm the upper Co-layers are similarly oxidized whereas the lower layers contacting the graphene remain metallic. The measurements indicate a Co2+ oxidation state with no evidence of a 3+ state appearing at any Co thickness, consistent with CoO and Co[OH]2. A new experiment is described to detect a permanent electric dipole moment of the proton with a sensitivity of $10^{-29}e\cdot$cm by using polarized "magic" momentum $0.7$~GeV/c protons in an all-electric storage ring. Systematic errors relevant to the experiment are discussed and techniques to address them are presented. Optical excitation typically enhances electrical conduction and low-frequency radiation absorption in semiconductors. We have, however, observed a pronounced transient decrease of conductivity in doped monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, under femtosecond laser excitation. In particular, the conductivity is reduced dramatically down to only 30% of its equilibrium value with high pump fluence. This anomalous phenomenon arises from the strong many-body interactions in the system, where photoexcited electron-hole pairs join the doping-induced charges to form trions, bound states of two electrons and one hole. The resultant increase of the carrier effective mass substantially diminishes the carrier conductivity.

Growth on transition metal substrates is becoming a method of choice to prepare large-area graphene foils. In the case of nickel, where carbon has a significant solubility, such a growth process includes at least two elementary steps: (1) carbon dissolution into the metal, and (2) graphene precipitation at the surface. Here, we dissolve calibrated amounts of carbon in nickel films, using carbon ion implantation, and annealing at 725 \circ or 900 \circ. We then use transmission electron microscopy to analyse the precipitation process in detail: the latter appears to imply carbon diffusion over large distances and at least two distinct microscopic mechanisms.
