In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of CP and OA treatments in LPS-stimulated lung epithelial cells on overall chemokines and their receptors using PCR arrays. In addition, we aimed to confirm those effects and mechanisms in LPS-stimulated lung macrophages on some chemokines and cytokines. In our study, CP treatments significantly inhibited the inflammatory mediators CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, CCL5, CCL6, CCL9, CCL11, CCL17, CCL20, CXCL1, CXCL2, CXCL3, CXCL5, CXCL7, CXCL10, TNF-α, and IL-6, while markedly suppressing NF-κB p65 nuclear translocation and the phosphorylations of PI3K p55, Akt, Erk1/2, p38, and NF-κB p65 in LPS-stimulated lung epithelial cells. CP treatments also significantly decreased the inflammatory mediators CCL2, CCL5, CCL17, CXCL1, and CXCL2, while markedly inhibiting phospho-PI3K p55 and iNOS expression in LPS-stimulated lung macrophages. Likewise, OA treatments significantly suppressed the inflammatory mediators CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, CCL5, CCL8, CCL11, CXCL1, CXCL3, CXCL5, CXCL7, CXCL10, CCRL2, TNF-α, and IL-6, while markedly reducing the phosphorylations of PI3K p85, PI3K p55, p38, JNK, and NF-κB p65 in LPS-stimulated lung epithelial cells. Finally, OA treatments significantly inhibited the inflammatory mediators CCL2, CCL5, CCL17, CXCL1, CXCL2, TNF-α, and IL-6, while markedly suppressing phospho-PI3K p55, iNOS, and Cox-2 in LPS-stimulated lung macrophages. These results prove that CP and OA treatments have anti-inflammatory effects on the inflammatory chemokines and cytokines by inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators, including PI3K, Akt, MAPKs, NF-κB, iNOS, and Cox-2. Polarizing films were made by drying lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) aqueous solutions that have been aligned by shearing. To improve the polarizing efficiency (measured at 400 nm) of a film prepared from a yellow LCLC, a biaryl yellow compound was synthesized by coupling two of the yellow dye chromophores together via C–C a bond. The polarization efficiency of a film cast from a yellow LCLC solution was increased from 78.2% to 89.7% by mixing yellow LCLC with a little amount of biaryl yellow compound (yellow LCLC:biaryl yellow = 99:1). Broad-spectrum polarizing films made from a LCLCs mixture consisting of yellow, red, violet and blue LCLCs was least effective in the yellow region, but the addition of this compound increases the polarization efficiency at 400 nm from 80.8% to 90.1%. In this study, the tendency of having different grain structures depending on the impurity levels in AZ91 alloys was investigated. Two types of AZ91 alloys were analyzed: commercial-purity AZ91 and high-purity AZ91. The average grain size of the commercial-purity AZ91 alloy and high-purity AZ91 is 320 µm and 90 µm, respectively. Thermal analysis revealed negligible undercooling in the high-purity AZ91 alloy, while undercooling of 1.3 °C was observed in the commercial-purity AZ91 alloy. A CS analyzer was employed to precisely analyze the carbon composition of both alloys. The carbon content of the high-purity AZ91 alloy was found to be 197 ppm, while the commercial-purity AZ91 alloy contained 104 ppm, indicating a difference of approximately 2 times. The higher carbon content in the high-purity AZ91 alloy is believed to be due to the use of high-purity pure Mg in its production (the carbon content of high-purity pure Mg is 251 ppm). To simulate the vacuum distillation process commonly used in the production of high-purity Mg ingots, experiments were conducted to investigate the reaction of carbon with oxygen to produce CO and CO2. XPS analysis and simulation results for activities confirmed the formation of CO and CO2 during the vacuum distillation process. It could be speculated that the carbon sources in the high-purity Mg ingot provide Al-C particles, which act as nucleants for Mg grains in the high-purity AZ91 alloy. Abstract: Chelidonium majus L. has multiple applications in Korean traditional medicine because of its anti-tumoral, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activities and has long been known to have anti-inflammatory effects. However, no study on the anti-arthritic activity of Chelidonium majus has been reported in vivo. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease with chronic inflammation characterized by hyperplasia of synovial cells in affected joints, which ultimately leads to the destruction of cartilage and bone. Cytokine production and gene expression were assessed during CIA (collagen-induced arthritis) model mice in knee joint, lymph node (LN), and spleen, using ELISA and competitive RT-PCR. DBA/1J mice were immunized with bovine type II collagen. After a second collagen immunization, mice were treated with CME orally at 400, 40mg/kg once a day for 4 weeks. The severity of arthritis within the knee joints was evaluated by histological assessment of cartilage destruction and pannus formation. Administration of CME significantly suppressed the progression of CIA and inhibited the production of TNF-α and IL-6 in spleen and lymph node. The erosion of cartilage was dramatically reduced in mouse knees after treatment with CME. In conclusion, our results demonstrates that CME significantly suppressed the progression of CIA and that this action was characterized by the decreased production of TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-γ, B cells, γδ T cells (in spleen) and increased proportion of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells in vivo. Abstract: Actinidia polygama is one of the well known herb used in oriental medicine for treatment of anti-inflammatory and many allergic diseases. Anti-asthmatic effects of A. polygama in the development of OVA-induced eosinophilia and hyperresponsiveness in murine model of asthma have not been fully investigated in vivo. Cyclosporine A (CsA) has been shown to inhibit single allergen-induced allergic inflammation such as eosinophilic and lymphocytic infiltration and mRNA expression for interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the mucosa and is associated with excess production of Th2 cytokines and eosinophil influx in lung. To clarify the anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic effects of A. polygama and CsA, we examined the influence of A. polygama fructus extract (APF) and CsA on the development of pulmonary eosinophilic inflammation in murine model of asthma. Our results have shown that APF and CsA have profound inhibitory effects on the accumulation of eosinophills into airways, with the reduction of eosinophil and total lung leukocyte number by reducing IL-4, IL-5, IL-13 and IgE levels in the BALF. Moreover, APF decreased eosinophil CCR3 expression and CD11b expression in lung cells. These results indicate that APF has a deep inhibitory effect on airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness in murine model of asthma and play a crucial role as an immunomodulator which possess anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic property by modulating the relationship between Th1/Th2 cytokine imbalance. Abstract: Liriope platyphylla is one of the well-known herb used in oriental medicine for treatment asthma and bronchial and lung inflammation. Anti-asthmatic effects of Liriope platyphylla in the development of OVA-induced airway inflammation and murine asthma model have not been fully investigated in vivo. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the mucosa and is associated with excess production of Th2 cytokines and eosinophil accumulation in lung. To clarify the anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic effects of Liriope platyphylla, we examined the influence of liriopis tuber (LRT) on the development of pulmonary eosinophilic inflammation in murine model of asthma. Our results have shown that LRT were demonstrated on the accumulation of eosinophills into airways, with reduction of eosinophil, total lung leukocytes numbers by reduction IL-5, IL-13, IL-4 and IgE levels in the BALF and serum. Moreover, LRT decreased eosinophil CCR3 expression and CD11b expression in lung cells. These results indicate that LRT has a deep inhibitory effects on airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness in murine model of asthma and play an crucial role as a immunomodulator which possess anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic property by modulating the relationship between Th1/Th2 cytokine imbalance. Abstract: Doped TiO2 semiconductor powders were synthesized using Al and W as photovoltaic property-enhancing impurities. Al-doped TiO2 electrodes increased open-circuit voltage (), but reduced short-circuit current (). In contrast, W-doped TiO2 had an opposite effect. However, dye-sensitized solar cell efficiency fabricated with doped TiO2 was remarkably better than that of undoped TiO2. It seems that these phenomena were related to electrical surface-state modifications induced by metal-ion dopants. These modifications led to significant changes in powder aggregation, charge transfer kinetics, and dye adsorption characteristics. The crystallized CeO2 films were grown on Si(1 0 0) wafer by RF magnetron sputtering. For measurements of those films, CeO2 films were analyzed with XRD, SEM, AES, RBS, and TEM. CeO2 films by sputtering were crystallized with (1 1 1) plane without increasing substrate temperature and annealed films’ orientation was not changed. For interaction between CeO2 and Si substrate, no secondary phase was observed while SiO2 layers were generated between CeO2 and Si substrate when CeO2 films deposited with each condition were annealed in the air and N2 atmosphere. For this reason, it was assumed that Si substrate was oxidized by excess oxygen in CeO2 films during annealing. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

TiO2 thin films were prepared using the dip-coating method with a polymeric sol including additives such as Al, W, and Al+W to examine two major properties: photocatalysis and hydrophilicity. W-doped films showed the best photocatalytic efficiency, while Al-doped film was poorer than undoped samples. However, good hydrophilicity in terms of saturation contact angle and surface conversion rate was found in Al- and (Al+W)-mixed-doped films. It was found that deep electron-hole traps and high surface acidity of W-doped TiO2 thin film were the major factors in high photocatalytic efficiency. In addition, low surface acidities of Al- and (Al+W)-doped films provided better hydrophilicity than W-doped ones. However, the amount of [Ti3+] point defects on the surface was another major factor, probably the most important, in getting the best hydrophilicity. Conclusively, it seemed that many parts of the photocatalysis mechanism depend more on bulk-related properties than do those of hydrophilicity, which can be defined as an interfacial (surface) or near-surface-restricted process. Potential field interpretation is a powerful method to locate deep buried tectonic fault lines that contribute to intraplate earthquakes. A magnitude 5.4 earthquake (2017, M 5.4_PO) occurred in the Middle-Miocene Pohang Basin (PB), SE of the Korean Peninsula on 15 November 2017, in the area where no fault lines appear on geological and tectonic maps. To constrain fault locations, we calculate the gravity effect of the current basin fill with a gravity stripping method and used curvature analysis to identify former geological and tectonic structures, assumed formed in the Early-Miocene. The Early-Miocene PB is divided into two subregions (northern- and southern sub-basins) by a modelled NW–SE fault line, similar to the other Early-Miocene basins (e.g. Eoil basin). Fault line trends are NE–SW in the northern sub-basin, and NNE–SSW in the southern sub-basin. 2017 M 5.4_PO arose from a tectonic movement along the eastern boundary of the northern sub-basin, the cross-over area from the isolated high-magnetic/low-gravity region to low-magnetic/high-gravity region. The largest aftershock of the 2017 M 5.4_PO occurred along the NW–SE fault line bordering the northern- and southern sub-basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted intense interest; however, despite the considerable effort of researchers, a universal manufacturing method that can guarantee both high material quality and throughput has not been realized to date. Herein, a universal approach to producing high‐quality monolayer TMDCs on a large scale via germanium (Ge)‐mediated atomic spalling is presented. Through the modified analytic model, the study verifies that the thin Ge film could be a suitable stressor that effectively reduces the crack propagation depth at the sub‐nanometer range. In particular, an acid‐etching process is not required in the overall atomic spalling process due to the water‐soluble nature of the Ge, enabling it widely applicable to various TMDCs. Under the optimized spalling conditions, a millimeter‐sized monolayer of stable MoS2, as well as unstable MoTe2, is successfully achieved. Through detailed spectroscopic and electrical characterizations, it is confirmed that the proposed methodology for obtaining large‐area atomic layers does not introduce any significant structural defects or chemical contaminations. An earthquake (2016M5.8_GY) occurred on 2016 September 12 due to the SW−NE movement of the Yangsan fault in the Gyeongsang Basin in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula and caused more than 600 aftershocks within a 1-yr period. To find out the causes and process of the 2016M5.8_GY and its aftershocks, we conducted 3-D underground structural modelling of the Gyeongju area using a combined interpretation of geological, petrophysical and potential field data and hence calculated the density- and magnetic-field distribution along the Yangsan fault. The results of the 3-D modelling indicate that the 2016M5.8_GY occurred in the ductile region of the fault, which is tectonically very unstable, and is therefore highly likely to be significantly affected by any future seismological stress. The crustal structure most affected by the 2016M5.8_GY is the Cretaceous Granite, which has a vertical relief of approximately 12 km with a relatively lower density material than the surrounding country rock and rests on highly ductile material. Therefore, the lower part of the granite is enough unstable that it was probably crushed by the main shock. That is also the reason, why so many aftershocks occurred beneath the granites. We present the results of seismic profiling aimed to characterize the structure of shallow formation in the Geoncheon Valley (GCV), an area we interpreted as the north tip of the Miryang Fault This profile was deployed in the GCV, near the City of Gyeongju, Republic of Korea. The Miryang Fault is one of the major faults of the Yangsan Fault System in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, the southeastern Korean Peninsula. Despite local earthquake records showing scattered micro-seismicity along the trace of Miryang Fault, other geophysical and geological information is rare. The location of the GCV is tectonically critical: it is on the major stratigraphic boundary in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin: the Hayang Group (dominantly sedimentary rocks) to the north and Yucheon Group (volcanic and volcanoclastic rocks) to the south. The surface expression of the Miryang Fault in this area is difficult to define by geomorphology since the surface is covered by highly altered cultivated farmlands. We tackle this problem by conducting seismic profiling. On a 1,200-m long linear profile, we deployed a dense array using 3-component seismic sensors and acquired both passive and active seismic data. The passive seismic data acquisition lasted about 12 days. At the end of the deployment period directly before withdrawing the array, an active survey using a sledgehammer source was also conducted. The integrated seismic cross-section displays significant segmentation in the texture of the seismic image, the sediment-bedrock interface is between less than 10 meters to slightly greater than 20 meters with a general trend of dipping to the southeast. The preliminary seismic results suggest that it is likely the Miryang Fault terminates inside the GCV, and the type of tip damage zone appears to be a group of horsetail splays. The Jeokjung-Chogye Basin (JCB) is the first impact crater discovered in the Korean peninsula. The geometric centre of the exterior crater rim is demarcated by an elevation high surrounding the JCB, exceeding 200 m. The diameter of the exterior ring is approximately 6500 m, and its centre is located about 1000 m southwest of the basin centre. Using terrestrial measured gravity field interpretations such as dip curvature and Z -derivative analysis of the residual anomaly field, we calculated the diameters of the peak ring and uplift ring to be about 4000 and 1500 m, respectively. The centre of the peak ring is located approximately 350 m to the west of the centre of the exterior ring; meanwhile, the centre of the uplift ring is located about 300 m to the east from the exterior ring's centre. Application of the Euler deconvolution method indicates that the depth discrepancy between the peak and uplift rings is approximately 200 m. This discrepancy indicates that the bedrock under the uplift ring has risen about 200 m following the meteorite impact. The offsets of the peak and the uplift ring's centres, relative to the diameter of the crater centre, allow us to conclude that the JCB was formed by steeply inclined impact (∼50–60° to the horizontal) from the eastern direction. Abstract: The natural product oleanolic acid is commonly found in a variety of medicinal plants. It is a triterpenoid compound known for its anti-inflammatory effects as well as various other pharmacological properties. The aim of the current study was to use a mouse model of allergic asthma to investigate whether oleanolic acid has anti-asthmatic effects, and if so, to determine the mechanism of these effects. Oleanolic acid suppressed eosinophil infiltration, allergic airway inflammation, and Penh, which occurred by suppressing the production of IL-5, IL-13, IL-17, and ovalbumin-specific IgE through the upregulation of T-bet and Foxp3, and the downregulation of GATA-3 and RORγt. The therapeutic effect of oleanolic acid was due to suppression of Th2 cytokines (IL-5 and IL-13), B cell-dependent production of OVA-specific IgE, and Gr-1 expression through the T-bet, GATA-3, retinoic acid-related orphan receptor γ t (RORγ t) and forkhead box p3 (Foxp3) transcription pathways. It is therefore reasonable to suggest that the anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic effects of oleanolic acid may be exerted through inhibition of the GATA-3 and RORγt pathways. Abstract: Allergic asthma is a chronic airway disorder characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness to allergens, chronic airway inflammation, airway edema, increased mucus secretion, excess production of Th2 cytokines, and eosinophil accumulation in the lungs. Ursolic acid is known for its pharmacological effects, such as its anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. To investigate the anti-asthmatic effects and mechanism of ursolic acid, we studied the development of pulmonary eosinophilic inflammation and enhanced pause (Penh) in a mouse model of allergic asthma. In this study, BALB/c mice were systemically sensitized to ovalbumin followed by intratracheal, intraperitoneal, and aerosol allergen challenges. We investigated the effect of ursolic acid and Cyclosporin A (CsA) on Penh, pulmonary eosinophilic infiltration, various immune cell phenotypes, Th2 cytokines, IL-17 production, and ovalbumin specific IgE production in a mouse model of asthma. In BALB/c mice, ursolic acid had suppressed eosinophil infiltration, allergic airway inflammation, and Penh, which occurred by suppressing the production of IL-5, IL-13, IL-17, and ovalbumin-specific IgE by blocking the GATA-3 and STAT6 pathways. Our data suggest the therapeutic mechanism of ursolic acid in asthma is based on reductions of Th2 cytokines (IL-5 and IL-13), ovalbumin-specific IgE production, and eosinophil infiltration via the Th2-GATA-3, STAT6, and IL-17-NF-κB pathways. Abstract: This paper presents a modified sliding mode control (SMC) algorithm for vibration control of structures, designed to enhance the control performance of the widely used SMC algorithm. In the modified SMC, the control force is determined so as to meet conditions imposed on the target derivative of the Lyapunov function. A shape function is developed to determine which one of the equivalent and corrective control—which are the two terms comprising the SMC—is the dominant part in controlling structures. Simulation results for linear and nonlinear systems show that the proposed method is able to enhance the control performance of the original SMC. Also, the modified SMC can be applied not only to active control, but also to semi-active control which is suitable for practical application. Moreover, it is observed that the performance is insensitive to the fundamental vibrating period and utilizes less control energy as compared to the original SMC. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Thin WO3 and Y2O3 films were successfully prepared on Si substrate by the cold gas dynamic spray process (CGDS, or cold spray). In contrast to standard metallic coatings such as Al, Cu on soft metal substrate, there was no sizable crater formation and plastic deformation of ceramic powders (WO3, Y2O3) on Si substrate. However, the aggregation of raw powders were found to be fragmented on the substrate to form a highly irregular surface with very fine secondary particles and provide a good interlocking powder among particles in the coating. High-resolution images of the substrate interface showed that particles at the interface were well packed and good adhesion was obtained. Therefore, the particle bombardment onto the first layer of the coating could provide enhanced adhesion to the substrate mechanically and/or chemically. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Holotrichia diomphalia larvae (HD), a natural product from an insect resource, possesses many pharmacological properties, including anticoagulant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activity. The major bioactive ingredients include oleic acid, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, linoleic acid, proline, and glutamic acid. Although HD is associated with immunoregulatory activities in allergic diseases, the therapeutic mechanisms of the action of HD in allergic diseases have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-asthmatic potential of HD in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced mouse model of allergic asthma. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory potential of HD was examined to identify a plausible mechanism of action of HD in vitro. HD strongly reduced goblet cell hyperplasia, eosinophil infiltration, and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which reduced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), inflammation, and the expression of Th2 cytokines (IL-5 and IL-13) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). The expression of IL-5, IL-4, eotaxin-2, lysyl oxidase-like 2 (loxl2), and GATA-binding protein 3 (GATA-3) was attenuated in the lungs. In an in vitro assay, HD exerted immunomodulatory effects through the suppression of Th2 cytokines (IL-5, IL-13), IL-17, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α production through downregulation of GATA-3 expression in EL-4 T cells. These findings suggest that the anti-asthmatic activity of HD may occur through the suppression of Th2 cytokines and total Immunoglobulin E (IgE) production by inhibition of the GATA-3 transcription pathway. Regulatory T cells play an important role in autoimmunity and have been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects in allergic asthma. Mouse model of airway inflammation was used to examine the suppressive activity of luteolin-induced CD4 + CD25 + regulatory T cells (Tregs) in vivo . In this study, BALB/c mice were sensitized with ovalbumin antigen (OVA) by aerosol challenge. Then, various biological processes were examined, including airway eosinophilia; mucus hypersecretion; elevation of OVA-specific IgE, expression of Th2 cytokines and chemokine levels; expression of eotaxin 2 and CCR3; and airway hyper responsiveness (AHR). Luteolin significantly inhibited OVA-induced increase in immune cell and eosinophil counts as well as IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and eotaxin levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL Fluid). Luteolin and cyclosporine A (CsA) which was a positive control also substantially reduced OVA-specific IgE levels, eotaxin 2 levels, and CCR3 expression in BAL Fluid. In contrast, luteolin significantly increased IL-10 and IFN-γ protein levels, as well as IL-10 and TGF-β1 mRNA expression in the lung. In vitro studies showed that the number of luteolin-induced CD4 + CD25 + Treg (iTreg) cells was higher, with elevated levels of TGF-β1 and foxp3 mRNA expression in lungs tissue. Transfer of iTreg cells into OVA-sensitized mice reduced AHR, eosinophil recruitment, eotaxin, IgE, and Th2 cytokine expressions, and increased IFN-γ production in BAL Fluid after allergen challenge. Furthermore, adoptive transfer of iTreg cells prevented disease in a CD25-depleted mouse asthma model. 18β-Glycyrrhetinic acid (18Gly), the major bioactive component of Glycyrrhizae Radix, possesses anti-ulcerative, anti-inflammatory, and other pharmacological properties. Although 18Gly is associated with immunoregulatory functions of allergic diseases, the pathophysiological mechanisms of 18Gly action in allergic inflammatory lung disease have not been examined. Moreover, there are no in vivo studies on the anti-asthmatic effects of 18Gly in allergic asthma. We investigated its effect and mechanism of action in airway inflammation in a BALB/c mouse model of allergic asthma. Interestingly, 18Gly strongly suppressed airway hyperresponsiveness, accumulation of inflammatory cells, and levels of T helper type 2 (Th2) cytokines (interleukin (IL)-5 and IL-13) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). It also attenuated lung IL-5, IL-13, and IL-4 expression, but it upregulated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) mRNA expression in lungs. Moreover, it exerted immunomodulatory effects by suppressing Th2 cytokines (IL-5, IL-13) production through upregulation of forkhead box p3 (Foxp3), and downregulation of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT6), GATA-binding protein 3 (GATA-3), and retinoic acid-related orphan receptor γ t (RORγt) expression. These results suggest that the anti-asthmatic activity of 18Gly may occur by the suppression of IL-5, IL-13, and OVA-specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) production through inhibition of the RORγt, STAT6, GATA-3 pathways and upregulation of the Foxp3 transcription pathway. Also, 18Gly treatment was protective against the oxidative stress by inducing significant decrease of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in MH-S alveolar macrophage cells. Al–Cu–Si ternary eutectic alloys with a bimodal eutectic structure exhibit a good combination of strength and plasticity owing to the multiscale hierarchical microstructure. Previous studies have reported that bimodal eutectic structures can be successfully prepared by rapid solidification at a cooling rate of greater than 102 °C/s. In the present study, a bimodal eutectic structure was successfully prepared at a cooling rate of less than 10 °C/s by adding a small amount of Sr to Al–Cu–Si ternary eutectic alloys. Additions of Sr led to a notable modification of the microstructure from a mixed eutectic structure to a bimodal eutectic structure. Samples with the bimodal eutectic structure showed greater hardness, strength, and elongation than samples with mixed eutectic structure. In particular, the elongation increased significantly from 6% to 28%. The additions of Sr changed the microstructure of the Al–Si phase from needles to globular shapes, which are finely dispersed all through the microstructure. These results indicate that the improved mechanical properties with the addition of Sr can mainly be attributed to the development of a multiscale hierarchical microstructure with fine eutectic cells. Abstract: Potential application of gas hydrate-based desalination was suggested with a novel apparatus design. The equipment continuously produces and pelletizes CO2 hydrates by a squeezing operation of a dual cylinder unit, which is able to extract hydrate pellets from the reactor containing hydrate slurries. Removal efficiencies for each dissolved mineral from seawater samples was also tested by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) analysis. In a single-stage hydrate process, 72–80% of each dissolved mineral was removed in the following order: K+ >Na+ >Mg2+ >B3+ >Ca2+. Our results also showed that ion rejection by the hydrate process strongly depends on the ionic size and charge. This study illustrates that the suggested method and apparatus may solve the separation difficulty between hydrate crystals and concentrated brine solutions, thus it can be applied for more effective desalination processes. Abstract: Natural killer (NK) cells develop from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the bone marrow. To understand the molecular regulation of NK cell development, serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) was applied to HSCs, NK precursor (pNK) cells, and mature NK cells (mNK) cultured without or with OP9 stromal cells. From 170,464 total individual tags from four SAGE libraries, 35,385 unique genes were identified. A set of genes was expressed in a stage-specific manner: 15 genes in HSCs, 30 genes in pNK cells, and 27 genes in mNK cells. Among them, lipoprotein lipase induced NK cell maturation and cytotoxic activity. Identification of genome-wide profiles of gene expression in different stages of NK cell development affords us a fundamental basis for defining the molecular network during NK cell development. Abstract: TiO2 film for use as dye-sensitized solar cell was prepared using the TiO2 colloidal sols (unpeptized sol and peptized sol). The optical properties and photocurrent–voltage characteristics of the resultant films were investigated. The optical transmittance of TiO2 thin film prepared from the peptized colloidal sol was over 90%, while that of TiO2 film from the unpeptized sol was under 80%. The TiO2 photoelectrode prepared from the peptized colloidal sol showed low photoelectric conversion efficiency (η), 1.30%, whereas the efficiency of photoelectrode from the unpeptized sol was 2.21%. The high optical transmittance and low conversion efficiency of TiO2 film from the peptized sol are discussed in terms of dense microstructure due to the drying nature of well-dispersed colloidal sol. Room temperature deposited and textured CeO2 films have been successfully grown on Si(100) substrate by RF magnetron sputtering. The crystallinity and texturing of the CeO2 films were measured by XRD. The XRD analysis showed that CeO2 films deposited on various substrates showed (200) texture, rather than the usual (111) orientation, when the metal target and substrate had an incident angle of 50–55°, and that this texture has good thermal stability for successive film deposition or heat treatment. Furthermore, Ar/O2 ratio during deposition has an influence on texturing process of as-deposited CeO2 films. It was concluded that incident angle geometry of sputtering could result in good (200) textured CeO2 films, when the metal target was sputtered. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Cicadae Periostracum (CP), derived from the slough of Cryptotympana pustulata, has been used as traditional medicine in Korea and China because of its diaphoretic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antianaphylactic activities. The major bioactive compounds include oleic acid (OA), palmitic acid, and linoleic acid. However, the precise therapeutic mechanisms underlying its action in asthma remain unclear. The objective of this study was to determine the antiasthmatic effects of CP in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthmatic mouse model. CP and OA inhibited the inflammatory cell infiltration, airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), and production of interleukin (IL)7 and Th2 cytokines (IL-5) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and OVA-specific imunoglobin E (IgE) in the serum. The gene expression of IL-5, IL-13, CCR3, MUC5AC, and COX-2 was attenuated in lung tissues. CP and OA might inhibit the nuclear translocation of GATA-binding protein 3 (GATA-3) and retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor γt (RORγt) via the upregulation of forkhead box p3 (Foxp3), thereby preventing the activation of GATA-3 and RORγt. In the in vitro experiment, a similar result was observed for Th2 and GATA-3. Coal fly dust (CFD)-induced asthma model is used as an ambient particulate matter model of serious pulmonary damage. We aimed to evaluate the effects of a combination of ginseng and Salvia plebeia R. Br extract (KGC-03-PS; KG3P) and its individual components (hispidulin, nepetin and rosmarinic acid) in a CFD-induced mouse model of airway inflammation (asthma). We also evaluated signal transduction by KG3P and its individual components in the alveolar macrophage cell line, MH-S cells. In vitro, KG3P and its individual components inhibited nitric oxide production and expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines (iNOS, COX-2, IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) through the NF-κB and MAPK pathways in coal fly ash (CFA)-induced inflammation in MH-S cells. Moreover, in the CFD-induced asthma model in mice, KG3P and its predominant individual component, nepetin, inhibited Asymmetric Dimethyl arginine (ADMA) and Symmetric Dimethyl arginine (SDMA) in serum, and decreased the histopathologic score in the lungs. A significant reduction in the neutrophils and immune cells in BALF and lung tissue was demonstrated, with significant reduction in the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines. Finally, IRAK-1 localization was also potently inhibited by KG3P and nepetin. Thus, KG3P extract can be considered as a potent candidate for amelioration of airway inflammation. In this research, a fly ash/epoxy composite was fabricated using fly ash filler classified as industrial waste. The behavior of its mechanical properties was investigated by changing the volume of fly ash to 10, 30 and 50 vol.%. To determine the influence of particle size on the mechanical properties, we used two different sizes of the fly ash, which were separated by sieving to less than 90 μm and 53 μm. To optimize fabrication conditions, the viscosity of the fly ash/epoxy slurry was measured at various temperatures with different fly ash volume fractions. In terms of mechanical properties, tensile strength increased as the amount of fly ash increased, up to a critical point. On the other hand, the compression strength of the composite increased continuously as the amount of fly ash increased.
