Measurements of elastic electron scattering data within the past decade have highlighted two-photon exchange contributions as a necessary ingredient in theoretical calculations to precisely evaluate hydrogen elastic scattering cross sections. This correction can modify the cross section at the few percent level. In contrast, dispersive effects can cause significantly larger changes from the Born approximation. The purpose of this experiment is to extract the carbon-12 elastic cross section around the first diffraction minimum, where the Born term contributions to the cross section are small to maximize the sensitivity to dispersive effects. The analysis uses the LEDEX data from the high resolution Jefferson Lab Hall A spectrometers to extract the cross sections near the first diffraction minimum of 12C at beam energies of 362 MeV and 685 MeV. The results are in very good agreement with previous world data, although with less precision. The average deviation from a static nuclear charge distribution expected from linear and quadratic fits indicate a 30.6% contribution of dispersive effects to the cross section at 1 GeV. The magnitude of the dispersive effects near the first diffraction minimum of 12C has been confirmed to be large with a strong energy dependence and could account for a large fraction of the magnitude for the observed quenching of the longitudinal nuclear response. These effects could also be important for nuclei radii extracted from parity-violating asymmetries measured near a diffraction minimum., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Multiferroic materials attract considerable interest because of the wide range of potential applications such as spintronic devices, data storage and sensors. As a strong candidate for the applications among the limited list of single-phase multiferroic materials, BiFeO3 (BFO) is a quite attractive material due to its multiferroic properties at room temperature (RT). However, BFO is widely known to have large leakage current and small spontaneous polarization due to the existence of crystalline defects such as oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, the magnetic moment of pure BFO is very weak owing to its antiferromagnetic nature. In this paper, the effects of Ni2+ substitution on the magnetic properties of bulk BFO have been investigated. BFO, and BiFe0.99Ni0.01O3, BiFe0.98Ni0.02O3 and BiFe0.97Ni0.03O3 (BFNO: Ni-doped BFO) ceramics were prepared by solid-state reaction and rapid sintering, and analyzed by structural and magnetic-property measurements. The leakage current density was measured at RT by using a standard ferroelectric tester. All the Ni-doped BFO exhibit the similar rhombohedral perovskite structure (R3c) to that of BFO. The magnetic properties of Ni-doped BFO are much enhanced with respect to BFO prepared at the same conditions, since the enhanced ferromagnetic interaction is caused by the Fe/Ni coupling.

The electronic structures of multiferroic oxides of Ba(1-x)Bi(x)Ti(0.9)Fe(0.1)O(3) (0 < x < 0.12) have been investigated by employing photoemission spectroscopy and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The measured Fe and Ti 2p XAS spectra show that Ti ions are in the Ti4+ states for all x and that Fe ions are Fe2+-Fe3+ mixed-valent for x > 0. The valence states of Fe ions are found to be nearly trivalent for x=0, and decreases with increasing x from being nearly trivalent (v(Fe)~ 3) for x=0 to v(Fe)~ 2.6 for x=0.12. The valence states of both Ti and Ba ions do not change for all x < 0.12. Based on the obtained valence states of Fe ions, the electronic and magnetic properties of Ba(1-x)Bi(x)Ti(0.9)Fe(0.1)O(3) are explored., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

High precision measurements of induced and transferred recoil proton polarization in d(polarized gamma, polarized p})n have been performed for photon energies of 277--357 MeV and theta_cm = 20 degrees -- 120 degrees. The measurements were motivated by a longstanding discrepancy between meson-baryon model calculations and data at higher energies. At the low energies of this experiment, theory continues to fail to reproduce the data, indicating that either something is missing in the calculations and/or there is a problem with the accuracy of the nucleon-nucleon potential being used., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Electronic structures of Sr_2FeMoO_6 (SFMO) and Ba_2FeMoO_6 (BFMO) double perovskites have been investigated using the Fe 2p->3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and the Cooper minimum in the Mo 4d photoionization cross section. The states close to the Fermi level are found to have strongly mixed Mo-Fe t_{2g} character, suggesting that the Fe valence is far from pure 3+. The Fe 2p_{3/2} XAS spectra indicate the mixed-valent Fe^{3+}-Fe^{2+} configurations, and the larger Fe^{2+} component for BFMO than for SFMO, suggesting a kind of double exchange interaction. We have investigated the hydrogen-annealing influence on the crystalline and electronic structures, and magnetic properties of La
2/3 Ca1/3 MnO3 (LCMO). The results have indicated that the annealing at 700 and 900°C (labeled as LCMO-700 and LCMO-900, respectively) readily reduced single-phase LCMO, resulting in a complex phase composition of several isostructural oxygen-deficient perovskite-type phases coexisting with the Ruddlesden-Popper (La/Ca)2 MnO4 -type phase. While a Mn3+ /Mn4+ mixed valence is present in LCMO, the hydrogenannealed samples mainly have Mn2+ and Mn3+ ions. Under such circumstance, large changes in magnetic parameters have been recorded, such as remarkable decreases in values of the magnetization, the Curie temperature (from 251 K for the as-prepared LCMO through 240 K for LCMO700 to ³221 K for LCMO-900), and the magnetic-entropy change. Particularly, the crystal and electronic-structure changes also enhance the magnetic inhomogeneity, resulting in a strong development of the Griffiths phase, and cause the first-to-second-order phase transformation. This study assessed the effects of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on stroke and atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL) from CREDENCE (Canagliflozin and Renal Events in Diabetes With Established Nephropathy Clinical Evaluation) and a meta-analysis of large cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) of SGLT2i in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: CREDENCE randomized 4401 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease to canagliflozin or placebo. Post hoc, we estimated effects on fatal or nonfatal stroke, stroke subtypes, and intermediate markers of stroke risk including AF/AFL. Stroke and AF/AFL data from 3 other completed large CVOTs and CREDENCE were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Results: In CREDENCE, 142 participants experienced a stroke during follow-up (10.9/1000 patient-years with canagliflozin, 14.2/1000 patient-years with placebo; hazard ratio [HR], 0.77 [95% CI, 0.55–1.08]). Effects by stroke subtypes were: ischemic (HR, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.61–1.28]; n=111), hemorrhagic (HR, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.19–1.32]; n=18), and undetermined (HR, 0.54 [95% CI, 0.20–1.46]; n=17). There was no clear effect on AF/AFL (HR, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.53–1.10]; n=115). The overall effects in the 4 CVOTs combined were: total stroke (HRpooled, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.82–1.12]), ischemic stroke (HRpooled, 1.01 [95% CI, 0.89–1.14]), hemorrhagic stroke (HRpooled, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.30–0.83]), undetermined stroke (HRpooled, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.49–1.51]), and AF/AFL (HRpooled, 0.81 [95% CI, 0.71–0.93]). 0.975 Sn0.025 O3 single crystals were studied at room temperature by Raman scattering at pressures up to 16 GPa using a diamond anvil cell. Two phase transitions were found to take place at pressures near 3 and 9 GPa, respectively, as revealed by subtle changes in Raman spectral features. A soft mode was observed at the pressure-induced phase transition occurring at 9 GPa. At pressures above ∼14 GPa, the Raman peaks become very weak and the background scattering becomes very strong. We present a study on the magnetic and magnetocaloric characters of Sm
1-x Srx CoO3 (x = 0.4–0.6) synthesized by solid-state reactions. Recorded M(T) data at H = 100 Oe show an increase of the Curie temperature (TC ) from 143 K for x = 0.4 to 153 K for x = 0.5, but a higher x value (x = 0.6) reduces TC to ~ 92 K. A singularity region sandwiched between the Griffiths and pure paramagnetic phases has been observed in x = 0.4, but it becomes invisible at x = 0.5 and 0.6. These properties are assigned to a competition between ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic interactions induced by Co3+ and Co4+ ions. The Co3+ /Co4+ mixed valence has been confirmed upon the analysis of Co K-edge x-ray absorption spectra. Using Maxwell's relations and M(H) data, we have calculated the absolute magnetic entropy change (|∆Sm |). Around TC , the maximum magnetic entropy changes (|∆Smax |) of x = 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 are about 1.19, 1.22 and 0.81 J/kg K for H = 50 kOe, respectively. The values of the relative cooling power are in the range of 58 ~ 93 J/kg. Our analyses also indicate all |∆Sm (T, H)| data obeying the universal master curve as constructing the |∆Sm |/|∆Smax | vs. θ plots, where θ is defined as the reduced temperature. When considering exponential parameters N(T, H) and n associated with |∆Sm (T, H)| and |∆Smax (H)|, respectively, we have found their values are different from the mean-field theory value n = 2/3. These results prove the Sm1-x Srx CoO3 samples have the second-order nature and short-range magnetic order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Chronic kidney disease with reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate or elevated albuminuria increases risk for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This study assessed the effects of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on stroke and atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL) from CREDENCE (Canagliflozin and Renal Events in Diabetes With Established Nephropathy Clinical Evaluation) and a meta-Analysis of large cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) of SGLT2i in type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: CREDENCE randomized 4401 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease to canagliflozin or placebo. Post hoc, we estimated effects on fatal or nonfatal stroke, stroke subtypes, and intermediate markers of stroke risk including AF/AFL. Stroke and AF/AFL data from 3 other completed large CVOTs and CREDENCE were pooled using random-effects meta-Analysis. RESULTS: In CREDENCE, 142 participants experienced a stroke during follow-up (10.9/1000 patient-years with canagliflozin, 14.2/1000 patient-years with placebo; hazard ratio [HR], 0.77 [95% CI, 0.55-1.08]). Effects by stroke subtypes were: ischemic (HR, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.61-1.28]; n=111), hemorrhagic (HR, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.19-1.32]; n=18), and undetermined (HR, 0.54 [95% CI, 0.20-1.46]; n=17). There was no clear effect on AF/AFL (HR, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.53-1.10]; n=115). The overall effects in the 4 CVOTs combined were: Total stroke (HRpooled, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.82-1.12]), ischemic stroke (HRpooled, 1.01 [95% CI, 0.89-1.14]), hemorrhagic stroke (HRpooled, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.30-0.83]), undetermined stroke (HRpooled, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.49-1.51]), and AF/AFL (HRpooled, 0.81 [95% CI, 0.71-0.93]). There was evidence that SGLT2i effects on total stroke varied by baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (P=0.01), with protection in the lowest estimated glomerular filtration rate (45 mL/min/1.73 m2]) subgroup (HRpooled, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.31-0.79]).
