1. Improving Global Competence in Classroom-Based Experiential Learning Activities

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop learning activities to improve global competence for a classroom-based course in the field of clothing and textiles and explore how those activities affected the global competence of college students. To achieve this goal, the researchers proposed the following objectives: (a) develop learning activities on global competence and (b) explore the influences of newly proposed learning activities on the global competence of college students. The authors analyzed students' reflective essays to identify themes through constant comparative analysis. The authors found participants learned about the Japanese culture through diverse aspects of global competence--affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions--throughout the semester via these learning activities. The authors also found informal writing could work as a starting point, where students were slowly exposed to a different culture, and reflective essays worked as a final summarizing phase where students could think further about their learning process related to global competence. This research is significant in terms of providing an empirical example of how to increase global competence in classroom-based courses. Additionally, scholars and teaching practitioners can gain insights from this study on how to improve global competence for the future workforce in a global economy.

2. Enhancing Intrinsic Features for Debiasing via Investigating Class-Discerning Common Attributes in Bias-Contrastive Pair

Abstract

In the image classification task, deep neural networks frequently rely on bias attributes that are spuriously correlated with a target class in the presence of dataset bias, resulting in degraded performance when applied to data without bias attributes. The task of debiasing aims to compel classifiers to learn intrinsic attributes that inherently define a target class rather than focusing on bias attributes. While recent approaches mainly focus on emphasizing the learning of data samples without bias attributes (i.e., bias-conflicting samples) compared to samples with bias attributes (i.e., bias-aligned samples), they fall short of directly guiding models where to focus for learning intrinsic features. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a method that provides the model with explicit spatial guidance that indicates the region of intrinsic features. We first identify the intrinsic features by investigating the class-discerning common features between a bias-aligned (BA) sample and a bias-conflicting (BC) sample (i.e., bias-contrastive pair). Next, we enhance the intrinsic features in the BA sample that are relatively under-exploited for prediction compared to the BC sample. To construct the bias-contrastive pair without using bias information, we introduce a bias-negative score that distinguishes BC samples from BA samples employing a biased model. 7. $L^p$ maximal bound and Sobolev regularity of two-parameter averages over tori

Abstract

We investigate $L^p$ boundedness of the maximal function defined by the averaging operator $f\to \mathcal{A}_t^s f$ over the two-parameter family of tori $\mathbb{T}_t^{s}:=\{ ( (t+s\cos\theta)\cos\phi,\,(t+s\cos\theta)\sin\phi,\, s\sin\theta ): \theta, \phi \in [0,2\pi) \}$ with $c_0t>s>0$ for some $c_0\in (0,1)$. We prove that the associated (two-parameter) maximal function is bounded on $L^p$ if and only if $p>2$. We also obtain $L^p$--$L^q$ estimates for the local maximal operator on a sharp range of $p,q$. Furthermore, the sharp smoothing estimates are proved including the sharp local smoothing estimates for the operators $f\to \mathcal A_t^s f$ and $f\to \mathcal A_t^{c_0t} f$. 10. Improving Evaluation of Debiasing in Image Classification

Abstract

Image classifiers often rely overly on peripheral attributes that have a strong correlation with the target class (i.e., dataset bias) when making predictions. Due to the dataset bias, the model correctly classifies data samples including bias attributes (i.e., bias-aligned samples) while failing to correctly predict those without bias attributes (i.e., bias-conflicting samples). Recently, a myriad of studies focus on mitigating such dataset bias, the task of which is referred to as debiasing. However, our comprehensive study indicates several issues need to be improved when conducting evaluation of debiasing in image classification. First, most of the previous studies do not specify how they select their hyper-parameters and model checkpoints (i.e., tuning criterion). Second, the debiasing studies until now evaluated their proposed methods on datasets with excessively high bias-severities, showing degraded performance on datasets with low bias severity. Third, the debiasing studies do not share consistent experimental settings (e.g., datasets and neural networks) which need to be standardized for fair comparisons. Based on such issues, this paper 1) proposes an evaluation metric `Align-Conflict (AC) score' for the tuning criterion, 2) includes experimental settings with low bias severity and shows that they are yet to be explored, and 3) unifies the standardized experimental settings to promote fair comparisons between debiasing methods. We believe that our findings and lessons inspire future researchers in debiasing to further push state-of-the-art performances with fair comparisons.

13. Revisiting the Importance of Amplifying Bias for Debiasing

Abstract

In image classification, "debiasing" aims to train a classifier to be less susceptible to dataset bias, the strong correlation between peripheral attributes of data samples and a target class. For example, even if the frog class in the dataset mainly consists of frog images with a swamp background (i.e., bias-aligned samples), a debiased classifier should be able to correctly classify a frog at a beach (i.e., bias-conflicting samples). Recent debiasing approaches commonly use two components for debiasing, a biased model $f_B$ and a debiased model $f_D$. $f_B$ is trained to focus on bias-aligned samples (i.e., overfitted to the bias) while $f_D$ is mainly trained with bias-conflicting samples by concentrating on samples which $f_B$ fails to learn, leading $f_D$ to be less susceptible to the dataset bias. While the state-of-the-art debiasing techniques have aimed to better train $f_D$, we focus on training $f_B$, an overlooked component until now. Our empirical analysis reveals that removing the bias-conflicting samples from the training set for $f_B$ is important for improving the debiasing performance of $f_D$. This is due to the fact that the bias-conflicting samples work as noisy samples for amplifying the bias for $f_B$ since those samples do not include the bias attribute. To this end, we propose a simple yet effective data sample selection method which removes the bias-conflicting samples to construct a bias-amplified dataset for training $f_B$. Our data sample selection method can be directly applied to existing reweighting-based debiasing approaches, obtaining consistent performance boost and achieving the state-of-the-art performance on both synthetic and real-world datasets., Comment: Accepted to AAAI 2023

19. Learning Debiased Representation via Disentangled Feature Augmentation

Abstract

Image classification models tend to make decisions based on peripheral attributes of data items that have strong correlation with a target variable (i.e., dataset bias). These biased models suffer from the poor generalization capability when evaluated on unbiased datasets. Existing approaches for debiasing often identify and emphasize those samples with no such correlation (i.e., bias-conflicting) without defining the bias type in advance. However, such bias-conflicting samples are significantly scarce in biased datasets, limiting the debiasing capability of these approaches. This paper first presents an empirical analysis revealing that training with "diverse" bias-conflicting samples beyond a given training set is crucial for debiasing as well as the generalization capability. Based on this observation, we propose a novel feature-level data augmentation technique in order to synthesize diverse bias-conflicting samples. To this end, our method learns the disentangled representation of (1) the intrinsic attributes (i.e., those inherently defining a certain class) and (2) bias attributes (i.e., peripheral attributes causing the bias), from a large number of bias-aligned samples, the bias attributes of which have strong correlation with the target variable. Using the disentangled representation, we synthesize bias-conflicting samples that contain the diverse intrinsic attributes of bias-aligned samples by swapping their latent features. Abstract

Hundreds of thousands of genetic variants have been reported to cause severe monogenic diseases, but the probability that a variant carrier develops the disease (termed penetrance) is unknown for virtually all of them. Additionally, the clinical utility of common polygenetic variation remains uncertain. Using exome sequencing from 77,184 adult individuals (38,618 multi-ancestral individuals from a type 2 diabetes case-control study and 38,566 participants from the UK Biobank, for whom genotype array data were also available), we apply clinical standard-of-care gene variant curation for eight monogenic metabolic conditions. Rare variants causing monogenic diabetes and dyslipidemias display effect sizes significantly larger than the top 1% of the corresponding polygenic scores. Nevertheless, penetrance estimates for monogenic variant carriers average 60% or lower for most conditions. Abstract

Abstract Background A thorough examination of the morbidity and comorbidity profiles among the elderly and an evaluation of the related factors are required to improve the delivery of health care to the elderly and to estimate the cost of that care. In South Korea where the aged population is rapidly increasing, however, to date only one study using a limited sample (84 subjects) has provided information on morbidity and related factors among the elderly. Using a large, stratified, random sample (2,767 subjects) from the population-based Ansan Geriatric study, the present study sought to assess the morbidity and comorbidity, and to determine the relationships of these variables with sociodemographic and health characteristics in elderly people in South Korea. Methods A total of 2,767 subjects (1,215 men and 1,552 women) aged 60–84 years were randomly selected from September 2002 to August 2003 in Ansan, South Korea. Data on sociodemographic and health characteristics, and clinical diagnosis were collected using questionnaires. When available, the medical records and medications taken by the subjects were also cross-checked. Results Of the total subjects, 78.0% reported diagnosed disease, 11.0% had been cured, and 46.8% had been diagnosed with more than two diseases. The mean number of morbidities per person among elderly Koreans was 1.62 ± 1.35 (mean ± standard deviation), and women had a greater number of diseases per person than did men. The most common morbidities were chronic diseases such as hypertension, arthritis, and diabetes mellitus. In women, osteoporosis and arthritis were the second and third most prevalent diseases, respectively. Morbidity was significantly associated with gender, employment, household income, alcohol intake, self-assessed health status, and worries about health. Conclusion These data will enhance understanding of the patterns of health problems among elderly Koreans and will contribute to the application of appropriate intervention strategies.

Abstract

The restriction problem is better understood for hypersurfaces and recent progresses have been made by bilinear and multilinear approaches and most recently polynomial partitioning method which is combined with those estimates. However, for surfaces with codimension bigger than 1, bilinear and multilinear generalization of restriction estimates are more involved and effectiveness of these multilinear estimates is not so well understood yet. Regarding the restriction problem for the surfaces with codimensions bigger than 1, the current state of the art is still at the level of $TT^*$ method which is known to be useful for obtaining $L^q$--$L^2$ restriction estimates. Abstract

Nyquist ghost artifacts in EPI are originated from phase mismatch between the even and odd echoes. However, conventional correction methods using reference scans often produce erroneous results especially in high-field MRI due to the non-linear and time-varying local magnetic field changes. Recently, it was shown that the problem of ghost correction can be reformulated as k-space interpolation problem that can be solved using structured low-rank Hankel matrix approaches. Another recent work showed that data driven Hankel matrix decomposition can be reformulated to exhibit similar structures as deep convolutional neural network. By synergistically combining these findings, we propose a k-space deep learning approach that immediately corrects the phase mismatch without a reference scan in both accelerated and non-accelerated EPI acquisitions. To take advantage of the even and odd-phase directional redundancy, the k-space data is divided into two channels configured with even and odd phase encodings. The redundancies between coils are also exploited by stacking the multi-coil k-space data into additional input channels. Then, our k-space ghost correction network is trained to learn the interpolation kernel to estimate the missing virtual k-space data. For the accelerated EPI data, the same neural network is trained to directly estimate the interpolation kernels for missing k-space data from both ghost and subsampling. Reconstruction results using 3T and 7T in-vivo data showed that the proposed method outperformed the image quality compared to the existing methods, and the computing time is much faster.The proposed k-space deep learning for EPI ghost correction is highly robust and fast, and can be combined with acceleration, so that it can be used as a promising correction tool for high-field MRI without changing the current acquisition protocol., Comment: To appear in Magnetic Resonance in Medicine

Let $\Gamma$ be a finite graph and let $\Gamma^{\mathrm{e}}$ be its extension graph. We inductively define a sequence $\{\Gamma_i\}$ of finite induced subgraphs of $\Gamma^{\mathrm{e}}$ through successive applications of an operation called "doubling along a star". 43. The Effects of College Students' Perfectionism on Career Stress and Indecision: Self-Esteem and Coping Styles as Moderating Variables

Abstract

This study identified the subgroups (latent classes) of Korean college students according to the influence of perfectionism on career stress and indecision, and explored the effects of sub-factors of perfectionism on career stress and indecision for each subgroup. Also, the study examined how individual self-esteem and stress coping styles affect the subgroup classification. Data from 476 South Korean college students were analyzed via mixture regression and logistic regression. Four latent classes were identified. In class 1, career indecision increased as self-oriented perfectionism increased, and career stress increased as socially prescribed perfectionism increased. In class 2, career stress increased as self-oriented perfectionism increased, whereas both career stress and career indecision decreased as others-oriented perfectionism increased. In class 3, both career stress and career indecision increased as others-oriented perfectionism increased. In class 4, career stress and career indecision decreased as others-oriented perfectionism increased, while career stress increased as socially prescribed perfectionism increased. In differentiating the classes, self-esteem and coping styles were analyzed as predictor variables. The results indicated that self-esteem helped to distinguish class 1 from class 2, and class 1 from class 3. Avoidance-oriented coping style could distinguish class 1 from class 3. Career counselors would benefit by noting that the influence of each sub-trait of perfectionism on career-related issues may vary by latent class, and that self-esteem and coping styles may moderate the effects of perfectionism on career-related issues.
