- Abstract
Policymakers aim to move toward animal-free alternatives for scientific research and have introduced very strict regulations for animal research. We argue that, for neuroscience research, until viable and translational alternatives become available and the value of these alternatives has been proven, the use of animals should not be compromised.

- Abstract
We write on behalf of the COSCE (Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies) Transparency Agreement on Animal Research, supported by the EARA (European Animal Research Association). In May 2020, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (EC-JRC) released a recommendation on the development of non-animal-derived antibodies, urging government authorities, funding agencies and publishers to endorse the use of these antibodies to improve scientific reproducibility1. These recommendations were based on the work done by the Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) of the European Union Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM). Recent correspondence to Nature2 and Nature Methods3 claims that non-animal antibodies are ready to replace animal-derived ones in all known applications. In our view, however, both the EC-JRC document and the published correspondence contain distorted perceptions of the current possibilities for non-animal-derived antibodies. While we are all committed to replacing animal experimentation with alternative methods, these methods need further scientific validation to justify replacing the use of animals without affecting the desired outcome of the experiment.

The general public shows strong reservations towards animal research. Over the years, science has also critically looked at e.g. reproducibility and translational issues and implemented improvements of which the public is not always aware. In addition, the relation between (some) animal experiments and human health is not always understood by the critical community. Due to aggressive actions towards some research establishments, communication about animal experiments has not always been the obvious answer. On the other hand, examples have shown, that transparency and openness lead to better understanding of the public about the why of animal experiments, but also about the strict regulations under which animal experiments have to be performed. In most cases where an open communication with the general public has become a fundamental policy, some understanding and a dialogue, also with the more extreme NGO's, replaced aggressiveness towards scientists. This article proposes several activities with respect to communication about animal experiments for public institutes and universities. One of these is that a group of experts should be established, with different backgrounds with respect to animal experiments and communication skills. The establishment of an Animal Experiments Communication Group has shown to be crucial for appropriate communication in different situations. Activities focussed on different communication strategies are discussed. Crucial in all of this is the each establishment has developed a clear policy on animal experiments, which is also shared with the outside world. A well-designed strategy should be the basis for effective communication to different groups under different situations. Furthermore, dedicated webpages providing information on the institute's policy with regard to animal experiments, as well as specific information on animal experiments (among which annual statistics) will lead to improved openness and transparency. Children with special needs should not be excluded from mainstream schools, argues Francesca Martinez, who claims that her cerebral palsy should not prevent her from participating in everyday school activities. Martinez claims that it is wrong to segregate children on the basis of what they cannot do. However, Kirk Leech argues that some children should be taught in special needs schools. Leech argues that the policy of inclusion does not always work because children with widely differing physical and mental disabilities are often grouped together.

- Abstract
Future neuroscience and biomedical projects involving non-human primates (NHPs) remain essential in our endeavors to understand the complexities and functioning of the mammalian central nervous system. In so doing, the NHP neuroscience researcher must be allowed to incorporate state-of-the-art technologies, including the use of novel viral vectors, gene therapy and transgenic approaches to answer continuing and emerging research questions that can only be addressed in NHP research models. This perspective piece captures these emerging technologies and some specific research questions they can address. At the same time, we highlight some current caveats to global NHP research and collaborations including the lack of common ethical and regulatory frameworks for NHP research, the limitations involving animal transportation and exports, and the ongoing influence of activist groups opposed to NHP research.
