The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) occupies more than 120,000 ha in Iran but information on the genetic structure and nitrogen fixation potential of the rhizobia nodulating this legume crop is scarce. Fifty-three bacterial isolates were sampled from root nodules of common bean cultivated in 12 different provinces of Iran. The genetic diversity of the isolates was analysed by PCR–RFLP of the 16S–23S rDNA internally transcribed spacer (ITS) region. At the similarity of 64%, common bean rhizobia were clustered into 10 groups, demonstrating a high degree of genetic variability among the isolates. Significant differences existed in the symbiotic potential of the isolates examined under greenhouse conditions. Ten isolates showed promising symbiotic characteristics in terms of shoot dry weight and symbiotic efficiency, and selected isolates revealed increased plant growth and yield under field conditions.

ObjectiveTo examine the effects of child-oriented dietary intervention on parental eating attitudes and dietary behaviour.DesignIn the prospective, randomized Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project for Children (the STRIP study), a cohort of Finnish families took part in a nutritional intervention trial focused on the quality of their children's fat intake since the age of 8 months. Health-related and hedonic eating attitudes of the parents were measured after 10 years of dietary intervention using a validated Health and Taste Attitude Scales (HTAS) questionnaire (n 660). Parents’ eating behaviour was studied using a 1 d food record (n 491).SettingFinland.SubjectsMothers and fathers (n 660) of the STRIP children.ResultsThe parents of the intervention families had a higher level of interest in healthy eating compared with control parents. The interest in natural products or hedonic eating attitudes did not differ between the groups. The parents’ general health interest was associated with low saturated fat intake, fruit and vegetable consumption, fibre intake and seeking pleasure in eating, but it was not associated with BMI. The intervention also improved the quality of dietary fat among parents with the lowest level of interest in healthy eating.ConclusionsParents’ general health interest was associated with regular dietary counselling as well as with healthier food choice behaviour. However, the dietary intervention that focused especially on the quality of the child's fat intake also enhanced specific changes in the family's fat consumption without a high level of interest in healthy eating.

Summary Peripheral bone strength and fracture risk were studied in young adult Finns. Peripheral bone measures were associated with risk factors of osteoporosis in young adults and discriminated between those with and without low-energy fractures. In men, trabecular bone loss at peripheral bone sites starts before the age of 40 years.

The effect of Rhizobium galegae alone and in combination with root colonising Pseudomonas strains on the growth of fodder galega ( Galega orientalis Lam.) was studied under greenhouse conditions in potting soil containing low levels of nitrogen. Eight weeks after sowing combined inoculations of fodder galega with R. galegae bv. orientalis HAMBI 540 and Pseudomonas trivialis 3Re27 or Pseudomonas extremorientalis TSAU20 had increased shoot and root dry matter, as compared with inoculation with R. galegae HAMBI 540 alone. Both Pseudomonas strains produced indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in culture but R. galegae did not. While the cellulase producing strain P. trivialis 3Re27 was able to significantly increase nodule numbers and nitrogen content of the co-inoculated plants, the cellulase-negative P. extremorientalis TSAU20 showed no significant stimulation of nodule numbers and nitrogen content in roots. We conclude that P. trivialis 3Re27 improve rhizobia–legume interactions, acting as “rhizobium helper bacteria”. The production of IAA and/or cellulase by Pseudomonas strains may contribute to such a positive effect.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of cholesterol metabolism in the development of atheromatous artery disease.Serum synthesis (cholesterol precursors) and absorption markers (cholestanol, campesterol, sitosterol, and avenasterol) were related to coronary risk factors and vascular structure in a population-based sample of 468 randomly selected 33-39-year-old men on their regular habitual diet. Carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and serum lipids (including cholesterol) and sterols were measured in 2001, and the subjects were ranked to decreasing cholesterol synthesis depicted by serum cholestanol quartiles defined 21 years earlier in adolescence.Serum cholesterol was correlated with absorption (e.g. serum campesterol, p0.05), but not with synthesis, or with cholestanol quartiles. Cholesterol metabolism (synthesis/absorption markers) decreased linearly (about 50%) with the increasing cholestanol quartiles. IMT differed between the age groups, but not between cholestanol quartiles. Serum triglycerides, apoprotein B, and body mass index decreased, and non-HDL cholesterol/apoprotein B values increased between the cholestanol quartiles, whereas LDL cholesterol was unchanged. Cholesterol synthesis markers were related to blood pressure and serum triglycerides, and negatively to HDL cholesterol level in total population and in most of the cholestanol quartiles (p from 0.05 to 0.001).Variables of metabolic syndrome accumulated in quartiles of high synthesis of cholesterol. Non-cholesterol sterols were related to many classic coronary risk factors, but virtually not to serum cholesterol or vascular structure.

A whole-diet approach has proven useful for characterising dietary exposure in cardiovascular epidemiology research. In our previous analyses, we found dietary patterns to be significant determinants of CVD risk factor levels among the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns cohort. We investigated the associations of major dietary patterns with carotid intima media thickness (IMT), a subclinical predictor of CVD, in healthy adults. The Young Finns Study is an ongoing, prospective cohort study with a 21-year follow-up to date. The subjects were children and adolescents at baseline in 1980 (aged 3–18 years), and all had reached adulthood by the latest follow-up in 2001 (aged 24–39 years). Complete dietary data from the years 1980, 1986 and 2001 and outcome data from the year 2001 were obtained from 785 subjects. The long-term average pattern score for a traditional dietary pattern (characterised by high consumption of rye, potatoes, butter, sausages, milk and coffee) was associated with IMT especially among subjects with a low score for the health-conscious dietary pattern (characterised by high consumption of vegetables, legumes and nuts, rye, tea, cheese and other dairy products). In multivariable regression analyses using long-term pattern scores as predictors, the traditional dietary pattern was independently associated with IMT in men (P P = 0·66). Long-term adherence to traditional food choices seems to increase the risk of developing subclinical atherosclerosis among Finnish men.

ObjectiveTo investigate the associations of BMI and overweight in adulthood with consumption of sweets and sugar-sweetened soft drinks in childhood and with the change in consumption between childhood and adulthood.DesignLongitudinal 21-year follow-up study of Finnish children and adolescents from childhood to adulthood.SettingThe Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study, comprising participants from both eastern and western Finland.SubjectsBoys (n967) and girls (n1172) aged 3–18 years at baseline in 1980.ResultsThe increase in consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks from childhood to adulthood was directly associated with BMI in adulthood in women (b= 0·45,P= 0·0001) but not in men. In women, BMI increased by 0·45 kg/m2for every 10-unit increase per month. Consumption of sweets and sugar-sweetened soft drinks in childhood and adolescence was not associated with BMI in adulthood. The change in consumption of sweets was not associated with BMI in adulthood. The increase in the consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks from childhood to adulthood was associated with being overweight (OR = 1·90, 95 % CI 1·38, 2·61) in women, but not in men. No association was found between overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) in adulthood and consumption of sweets in childhood or the change in consumption from childhood to adulthood.ConclusionsWe conclude that direct associations exist between adulthood overweight and BMI and an increase in consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks in women. Thus sugar-sweetened soft drinks consumption may be important when considering weight management in women.

To study how waist circumference (WC) relates to body perception in adolescent girls and to maternal perception of the girl's body size.Three hundred and four girls, 11-18 years, were measured for height, weight and WC. 294 girls provided self-report data on weight, height and body image before anthropometric measurements. Paired data from 237 girls and mothers on perception of the girls' body size were collected.In girls, self-reported weight indicated awareness of actual body size. The girls' body perception showed an overestimation of body size relative to international reference values for body mass index (BMI) (p0.05), but not for WC. Girls' body perception exceeded that of their mothers (p0.05). Maternal perception agreed better than the girls' perception with international reference values for BMI (p0.05). No significant difference between mothers and girls were found concerning agreement of body perception with international reference values for WC.WC rather than BMI agrees with perception of body size, possibly due to its relation to abdominal fat at different ages. For effective prevention and treatment programmes for weight-related health problems among adolescent girls, we recommend measuring WC to diminish the discrepancy between measured and perceived body size.

Previous evidence suggests that the lactase gene C/T− 13910 polymorphism (rs4988235) is associated with avoidance of milk products and lower Ca intake. We examined whether the consumption of milk and milk products and the intakes of milk nutrients differ between the lactase genotypes from childhood to young adulthood. Subjects belong to the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study where the first cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 1980 (n 3596), with follow-up studies in 1983, 1986, 1989, 1992 and 2001 (n 2620). The same dietary questionnaire was used throughout the follow-up to collect data on habitual consumption of milk and milk products in all subjects, and daily nutrient intakes were assessed with 48 h dietary recalls in 50 % of the subjects. Subjects with the lactase non-persistence (C/C− 13910) genotype consumed less milk since childhood, but the consumption of other milk products did not differ between the genotypes. In adult females, the lactose content of milk products consumed was lower (P = 0·003), and in both sexes low-lactose and milk-free diets were more common in the C/C− 13910 genotype than in the other genotypes. Inadequate Ca intake was most common in females with the C/C− 13910 genotype as early as in childhood (15–63 %), but in males only in adulthood (24 %). In adult females, preference for low-lactose milk and milk products equalised the differences in Ca intake between the genotypes. Thus, in those with the C/C− 13910 genotype, preference for low-lactose milk and milk products may decrease the risk for inadequate Ca intake.

Individuals suffering from ATH (adult-type hypolactasia), defined by the LCT (gene encoding lactase-phlorizin hydrolase) C/C−13910 genotype (rs4988235), use less milk and dairy products and may have higher plasma HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and lower triacylglycerol (triglyceride) concentrations than their counterparts without ATH. To investigate the effects of ATH status on the early markers of atherosclerosis, we examined its association with CIMT (carotid intima-media thickness), CAC (carotid artery compliance) and brachial artery FMD (flow-mediated dilation) in a young population-based cohort of otherwise healthy individuals. As part of the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study, we performed CIMT, CAC and FMD analyses, LCT C/T−13910 genotyping and risk factor determination in 2109 young subjects 24–39 years of age (45% males) at the time of the examination. Breast feeding in infancy may be associated with reduced cardiovascular morbidity in adulthood. We examined the association between breast feeding in infancy and arterial function and structure in adulthood in a population-based cohort of Finnish adults.Noninvasive ultrasound was used to measure brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and carotid artery compliance (CAC) in 1667 young adults participating in the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study with data on early nutrition.Maximal FMD was higher in breast-fed men compared to formula-fed men (7.2+/-4.0 vs 5.9+/-3.4%, P=0.029) while no differences were seen between breast-fed and formula-fed women (8.9+/-4.5 vs 8.8+/-5.0%, P=0.84). In men, the multivariable correlates of FMD included the group variable for breast feeding (P=0.014), birth weight (P=0.043), waist circumference (P0.001) and baseline brachial artery diameter (P0.001). In women, the multivariable correlates of FMD were birth weight (P=0.02), waist circumference (P0.001) and brachial artery baseline diameter (P0.001). Breast feeding was not significantly associated with IMT or CAC in multivariable models.Adult men who have been breast fed have better brachial endothelial function compared to men who have been formula fed.

Carl von Linne was interested in dietetics, which in his time covered all aspects of a healthy life. As a utilitarian he understood the importance of private economy and paid attention to bread in many of his publications. Two texts, Ceres noverca arctoum and De pane diaetetico, were wholly devoted to bread and bread-making. Linne classified different types of bread, and described their nutritional value and health-related aspects, as well as milling, baking and storing, in detail. While discussing the food habits of social classes Linne accepted as a fact that the peasants and the poor should eat less tasty bread than the rich. The less palatable bread had, however, many nutritional and health advantages. Linne paid much attention to substitutes for grain to be used in times of famine, an important topic in eighteenth century Sweden. He regarded flour made of pine bark or water arum roots as excellent famine food, was enthusiastic about the new plant, maize, but considered potato only as a poor substitute for grain. Linne and his followers praised bread not only as the core component of diet, but also for its versatile role both in health and in disease. We recently showed that Rhizobium galegae strains had two different lipopolysaccharide types, short and long O-chain. In the present study we observed that the lipopolysaccharide type was a stable feature of the strain. Both types persisted in cells at all phases of the growth cycle, during differentiation of bacteria into bacteroids and when the cells were grown under environmental stress. When R. galegae strains were grown at low pH or in medium containing aluminum or salt, simulating conditions in acid soils of temperate regions and osmotic stress, respectively, the tolerance of low pH was associated with the long O-chain lipopolysaccharide and abundant acidic polysaccharide production.

To assess prospectively the consumption of fruit and vegetables and its' correlation to the parental consumption in boys and girls taking part in an atherosclerosis prevention study (Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project for Children (STRIP) study). Nutrition counselling focused on cardiovascular health effects vegetable and fruit consumption. A prospective, randomised, clinical trial. Children were recruited to the STRIP study between 1989 and 1992. At the age of 7 months, children were randomised to the intervention (n=540) or the control group (n=522) and were followed up until the age of 11 years. Families in the intervention group have, since randomisation, received biannual individualised dietary counselling aimed at reduction of cardiovascular risk factors, especially saturated fat intake. Food records were used to assess fruit and vegetable consumption of children and parents. Objective— People living in eastern Finland have ≈40% higher coronary heart disease mortality rates than western Finns. Whether this is because of genetic or environmental factors is unknown. We examined the effect of geographic family origin on subclinical atherosclerosis among young Finns. Methods and Results— As part of a longitudinal follow-up study, we measured carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in 2264 and brachial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in 2109 white adults, aged 24 to 39 years. Subjects from eastern Finland had greater IMT and lower FMD compared with western subjects. These differences accentuated when the subjects’ family origin (grandparents’ birthplace) was taken into account and remained significant after adjusting for several environmental factors. Among subjects with all grandparents born in eastern or western Finland, IMTs were (mean±SEM) 0.592±0.003 versus 0.565±0.005 mm ( P P P P Conclusions— Young adults originating from eastern Finland have greater carotid IMT and lower brachial FMD than western Finns. Consistent with a hereditable component predisposing to or protecting from atherosclerosis, these differences accentuated when subjects’ family origin was taken into account.

The diet of school-aged children in north-west Namibia was investigated. Data on food consumption were collected using the 24-h recall interview method. The field study was conducted during the dry season. The subjects were schoolchildren aged between 8 and 15 years living in either a small town (n=43) or a rural area (n=10). In town, the main sources of energy were maize porridge and wheat bread, and for the rural children, sour milk and maize. The consumption of vegetables, fruit and legumes was very low in both groups. The mean intakes of energy were 6.7 MJ/day for children living in town and 4.7 MJ/day for rural subjects. The intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C and folate were inadequate in both groups. Our findings show that during the dry season, the diets of Namibian school-aged children are monotonous.

Background: The reasons behind the reported increase in the occurrence of childhood atopic sensitization rates are unclear. We wanted to evaluate the association between dietary fats, serum fatty acids, and the occurrence and development of atopic diseases. Methods: From a longitudinal database of a population-based sample, 231 sex- and age-matched pairs in 1980 and 154 pairs in 1986 were chosen, between whom we compared the dietary data, serum fatty acid composition, and occurrence of atopic diseases. The same variables were also compared between those who developed atopic disease later and those who did not during the 9-year follow-up. Results: Examination of the dietary data in 1980 for those who had developed atopic disease compared with those who had remained healthy showed that the atopic children had used less butter before the expression of atopy. According to the cross-sectional data, the children with atopic disease consumed more margarine (mean 8.6 vs 7.3 [P=0.04]), and less butter (mean 9.4 vs 11.6 g/1000 kcal [P=0.002]), than the nonatopic children in 1980. Differences supporting these dietary findings were similarly found in the serum fatty acid data. Conclusions: The diet of the atopic children differed from that of the nonatopic children in the consumption of polyunsaturated fat.

Alcohol consumption shows a U-shaped relation with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. To determine whether a similar relation exists between alcohol and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mortality, we analyzed data on alcohol consumption in 1970 and 20-year mortality from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among 2,953 middle-aged men from Finland, Italy, and the Netherlands. We also studied alcohol consumption in relation to pulmonary function (FEV1 or FEV0.75) at baseline. We used regression models adjusted for age, height (for pulmonary function only), body mass index, smoking habits, energy intake, and country. A smoothed spline-plot showed a U-shaped relation between alcohol and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mortality. Compared with non-drinkers and occasional drinkers, the relative risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mortality was 0.60 (95% CI = 0.33-1.09) in light drinkers (1 drink per week,or = 3 drinks per day) and 1.25 (95% CI = 0.47-3.31) in moderate-to-heavy drinkers. Pulmonary function was lower in non-drinkers compared with occasional and light drinkers in Finland (75 ml, 95% CI = -2 to 151) and the Netherlands (93 ml, 95% CI = 0-186) and lower in very heavy (12 drinks per day) compared with moderate-to-heavy drinkers in Italy (99 ml, 95% CI = 9-189). In conclusion, we observed a U-shaped curve between alcohol consumption and 20-year chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mortality in middle-aged men that was supported by cross-sectional data on alcohol and pulmonary function.

The effect of heat stress on the growth, physiological state, cell activity and cell morphology of the tropical Sinorhizobium arboris strain HAMBI 2190 was studied. The cells were chromosomally tagged with the firefly luciferase gene, luc. Since the bioluminescence phenotype is dependent on cellular energy reserves it was used as an indicator of the metabolic status of the cell population under various heat conditions. Variations in the numbers and lengths of growth phases between individual cultures indicated that the growth pattern at 40°C was disturbed compared to growth at 37 or 28°C. In addition, the cell morphology was changed radically. The number of culturable cells and the luciferase activity declined when the cultures were incubated at 40°C. By contrast, under all conditions studied, the cells could be stained with 5-(and 6-)sulfofluorescein diacetate, indicating esterase activity. This demonstrated that although the culturability and cellular energy reserves decreased considerably during heat stress, a majority of the of S. arboris cell population maintained basal enzyme activity.

The host specificity, infection process and effectiveness of nodules produced by several African sinorhizobial strains on different Acacia and Prosopis species (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae) were studied. Sinorhizobium arboris strain HAMBI 1552T, S. kostiense strains HAMBI 1489T and HAMBI 1493, S. saheli strain HAMBI 1496 and S. terangae bv. acaciae strain ORS 1058 induced nitrogen fixing nodules on seedlings of the following African or Latin American species (marked with *): A. angustissima * , A. mellifera, A. nilotica, A. oerfota (synonym A. nubica), A. senegal, A. seyal, A. sieberiana, A. tortilis subsp. raddiana, P. chilensis * , P. cineraria, P. juliflora and P. pallida * . All strains increased plant yield significantly compared with uninoculated seedlings watered with nitrogen-free medium, but none appeared to be superior. The sinorhizobial strains were unable to effectively nodulate Sesbania rostrata (Papilionoideae). All roots had hairs, but particularly in the case of Acacia spp. they were often sparse. After inoculation root hairs were deformed and, in general, infection in Acacia spp. occurred through short root hairs and in Prosopis spp. through longer ones. After entry, the rhizobia filled infection pockets in the root hair, which later expanded into sac-like structures. When infection threads occurred, they usually started from sac-like structures. Elongation and ramification of the nodules indicated that Acacia spp. and Prosopis spp. have indeterminate nodules. A persistent apical meristem, which is the characteristic feature of the indeterminate nodule type, was much clearer in Prosopis spp. than in Acacia spp. Sinorhizobial strains formed tumour-like structures with undifferentiated cell tissue on the Australian acacia A. holosericea and ineffective, nodule-like structures on the African P. africana.

Six trained Standardbred trotters exercised on a racetrack on 2 days with a 3-day interval. On both exercise days the horses trotted three different exercise bouts with increasing intensity with 60-min intervals. Exercise-induced stress was manifested as leucocytosis, an increase in the neutrophil : lymphocyte (N : L) ratio, and increased capacity to produce reactive oxygen species in the peripheral blood as indicated by an increase in whole blood chemiluminescence. The leucocytosis was mainly due to neutrophilia, which lasted for 6 h. Production of reactive oxygen species per single neutrophil showed no significant change during a day of exercise, but was lower on the second exercise day. The cortisol concentrations and N : L ratio, used as indicators of stress, behaved differently: Cortisol did not change significantly after exercise, whereas the N : L ratio increased. These results suggest that in trained horses, the N : L ratio is a sensitive indicator of stress of short duration, and an attenuated N : L response can be taken as an indicator of adaptation to exercise stress.

The evidence for the putative role of cow's milk in the development of type 1 diabetes is controversial. We studied infant feeding patterns and childhood diet by structured questionnaire (n = 725) and HLA-DQB1 genotype by a polymerase chain reaction-based method (n = 556) in siblings of affected children and followed them for clinical type 1 diabetes. In a nested case-control design in a population who had both dietary and genetic data available, we selected as cases those siblings who progressed to clinical diabetes during the follow-up period (n = 33). For each case, we chose as matched control subjects siblings who fulfilled the following criteria: same sex, age within 1 year, not from the same family, the start of the follow-up within 6 months of that of the respective case, and being at risk for type 1 diabetes at the time the case presented with that disease (n = 254). The median follow-up time was 9.7 years (range 0.2-11.3). Early age at introduction of cow's milk supplements was not significantly associated with progression to clinical type 1 diabetes (relative risk adjusted for matching factors, maternal education, maternal and child's ages, childhood milk consumption, and genetic susceptibility markers was 1.60 [95% CI 0.5-5.1]). The estimated relative risk of childhood milk consumption for progression to type 1 diabetes was 5.37 (1.6-18.4) when adjusted for the matching and aforementioned sociodemographic factors, age at introduction of supplementary milk feeding, as well as for genetic susceptibility markers. In conclusion, our results provide support for the hypothesis that high consumption of cow's milk during childhood can be diabetogenic in siblings of children with type 1 diabetes. However, further studies are needed to assess the possible interaction between genetic disease susceptibility and dietary exposures in the development of this disease.

Objective: To evaluate whether dietary recommendations for subjects with diabetes are met among Finnish, Dutch and Italian elderly men with diabetes, and whether the diets of diabetic and non-diabetic men differ in these three countries. Design: A dietary survey using cross-check dietary history method. A cross-sectional comparison. Setting: Thirty-year follow-up of survivors from the Finnish, Dutch and Italian cohorts of the Seven Countries Study. Subjects: 227 elderly men from Finland, 537 from The Netherlands, and 417 from Italy, of whom 8–9% had diabetes. Main results: The diets of non-diabetic men from the three countries differed markedly from each other. In all three countries diabetic men consumed less added sugar than non-diabetic men. In Italy, in addition, diabetic men consumed more fruits and berries and vegetables. The Dutch diabetic men ate relatively more cereal products, fruits and berries, milk and milk products, cheese, and meat and meat products and drank less alcoholic beverages than non-diabetic men. The diet of both diabetic and non-diabetic Finnish and Dutch men was characterized by high fat content (41% and 40% of energy, respectively). The fat content of the diet was even higher for diabetic than non-diabetic men in Finland and The Netherlands, but not in Italy. The fibre content of the diet was the highest among Dutch men and diabetic men received more dietary fibre than non-diabetic men in The Netherlands and Italy, but not in Finland. The diet of diabetic and non-diabetic Finnish men differed little from each other and was characterized by high nutrient density of several vitamins and minerals. The proportion of protein of energy intake was higher among diabetic than non-diabetic Dutch and Italian men. Conclusions: The diet of the diabetic men from Finland, the Netherlands, and Italy resembled more the diet of non-diabetic men from the respective countries than the diet of diabetic men from the other countries. In the diet of Italian diabetic men, the proportions of fat, saturated fatty acids and carbohydrates were nearest the recommended levels. Plant foods are generally considered to be beneficial for health. A higher consumption of fruits, and to a lesser extent vegetables, is consistently associated with a lower risk of stomach cancer. Results on the association between stomach cancer and grain consumption are less clear. We associated plant food consumption with 25-year stomach cancer mortality at population level in the Seven Countries Study. Around 1960, > 12,000 men aged 40-59 years from 7 countries and 16 cohorts were enrolled. In each cohort, dietary information was collected in small random samples. Crude and adjusted associations were calculated for a change of 10% of mean intake. Results differed for the plant foods studied: an inverse association was observed for fruits (adjusted rate ratio = 0.96, 95% confidence interval = 0.91-0.99), a positive relation for refined grains (adjusted rate ratio = 1.07, 95% confidence interval = 1.03-1.12), and no association for total plant foods, vegetables, whole grains, and potatoes. A high intake of refined grains was correlated with a low consumption of fruits. In conclusion, high intake of refined grains may increase stomach cancer risk. However, because adjustment could only be limited in this study, high intake of refined grains may just reflect the deleterious effect of a diet low in fruits or other characteristics associated with low fruit consumption.

Sinorhizobium sp. strain HAMBI 2180, marked with the β-glucuronidase (GUS) encoding gusA gene, was used for studying the effect of heat stress on the symbiotic interaction between Acacia senegal seedlings and Sinorhizobium sp. in growth cabinet conditions. The infection process, observed during 18 days after inoculation, was delayed at a root temperature of 40°C compared to a root temperature of ≤38°C, but nodulation was retarded already at 38°C. At 42°C no nodules were formed. At this root temperature the development of lateral roots and root hairs was one week delayed. Although the roots had normally deformed root hairs in addition to abnormally deformed ones, only disintegrated infection threads were present. However, the ability to form symbiosis was reversible. Nitrogen-fixing nodules developed on those parts of the roots which were formed after completion of the thermal stress at 42°C. A root temperature of 42°C did not affect the numbers of culturable rhizobia in the A. senegal rhizosphere.

Evidence from case-control studies for the diabetogenicity of introduction of cow's milk-based formulas at early age in infancy is inconclusive. We followed siblings of children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (Type 1 DM) to investigate a possible relationship between cow's milk consumption during infancy or later in childhood and the emergence of diabetes-associated autoantibodies and progression to clinical Type 1 DM. A cohort of 725 initially unaffected 0 to 25-year-old siblings of 801 index children with Type 1 DM diagnosed in 1986-1989 participated in the study (82% of those invited). The siblings were observed for Type 1 DM associated autoantibodies at intervals of 3-12 months for 4 years, starting from the diagnosis of Type 1 DM in the index child. The follow-up for Type 1 DM started at the same time and ended on 31 October 1995. The combined prevalence of Type 1 DM associated autoantibodies (islet cell antibodies (ICA), insulin autoantibodies (IAA), GAD autoantibodies (GADA), and/or antibodies to the insulinoma associated cDNA2 protein (IA-2A)) was 13.6% (95/697) at the beginning of the study. Of the initially seronegative siblings, 7.5% (45/602) converted to antibody positivity during 4 years, and of all siblings 4.6% (33/725) developed Type 1 DM during the total follow-up time. The age at introduction of supplementary milk feeding was not significantly related to seroconversion to positivity for Type 1 DM associated autoantibodies or to the development of Type 1 DM in the siblings. When adjusted for age, sex, infant feeding patterns, and maternal age and education, high milk consumption in childhood (> or =3 glasses daily) was associated with more frequent emergence of Type 1 DM-associated autoantibodies than low consumption (

Dietary factors are suspected to play an aetiological role in the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). We analysed cow's milk formula, betalactoglobulin, and bovine serum albumin antibodies by an enzyme-linked immunoassay in unselected children with newly diagnosed IDDM and in their non-diabetic siblings and inquired about infant feeding practices by questionnaire. Among 410 diabetic sibling pairs matched for age and sex, by logistic regression analysis - including overall duration of breast-feeding, age at introduction of dairy products, recent consumption of cow's milk and HLA-DQB1 genotype ("high/moderate" vs "low/decreased" risk of IDDM) - bovine serum albumin IgG antibody levels (OR 2.12, 95% CI 1.25-3.57) and genetic risk (OR 3.81, 95% CI 2.43-5.17) were positively associated with IDDM; cow's milk formula IgM antibodies were inversely associated with the risk of IDDM (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.29-0.87). Of the diabetic sibling pairs, 42 were identical for HLA-DQB1 alleles associated with IDDM risk or protection (DQB1*0201, *0301, *0302 and *0602/03). In these 42 pairs, children with IDDM had higher median levels of bovine serum albumin IgG, of betalactoglobulin IgG, and of cow's milk formula IgG and IgA antibodies than the non-diabetic siblings (p < 0.05). In conclusion, children with IDDM have higher levels of cow's milk protein antibodies than their HLA-DQB1-matched sibling controls, and these high levels of antibodies are independent risk markers for IDDM.

Objective: To relate dietary patterns to cognitive function in elderly men. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Population based. Subjects: 1049 men aged 70–91 years around 1990 in five cohorts from the Seven Countries Study: Finland (2 cohorts), the Netherlands (1 cohort), and Italy (2 cohorts). Interventions: Food intake was estimated by a cross-check dietary history. Based on the WHO guidelines for the prevention of chronic diseases, a healthy diet indicator was calculated (HDI). A higher HDI indicates a diet more in accordance with the WHO guidelines, and previously we showed that HDI predicted reduced all-cause mortality in our cohorts. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and a score of 23 or lower was used to indicate cognitive impairment. Results: The prevalence of cognitive impairment varied from 14.4% in Zutphen (The Netherlands) to 42.1% in Crevalcore (Italy). There was a tendency towards a lower prevalence of cognitive impairment associated with increased HDI in four out of five cohorts (not in East Finland). In Zutphen this association was borderline significant (OR=0.81; 95% CI 0.63–1.04) after adjustment for age, education, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and energy intake. In Crevalcore the association was statistically significant (OR=0.75; 95% CI 0.58–0.97). Conclusions: A healthy diet might be associated with a better cognitive function in elderly men. However, since the results were not consistent over all five cohorts, further research is needed to confirm this finding and to decide whether this association is causal. Background: Food choices do not remain stable over time. When young adults set up their own family, spouses have to adjust to a possibly different diet.Methods: In 1992, a total of 684 married, cohabiting or engaged couples filled in questionnaires on food habits and food-related activities as a part of the follow-up study ‘Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns’. Similarity in food choices was assessed as a percentage of pairs with exactly the same choices. Socio-demographic characteristics of couples with low or high resemblance in food habits were examined and the division of household tasks was described.Results: Similarity between spouses in nine food choice categories varied from 49% to 88%. Resemblance in food choices was higher among couples who had children and ate meals at home. When the couple had children and when the woman's educational level was low, women notably prepared the meals and did the food shopping. One-third of men took part in meal preparation and less than half of men shopped for food on weekdays either alone or with his spouse.Conclusion: Young couples share a similar diet to some extent. They seem to change food choices when children are born. Nutrition education should be directed at young couples to advise them to make the changes in their diet which promote their own and their children's health.

The majority of coronary heart disease (CHD) arises from a population with only moderately elevated risk factor levels. This study addressed the issue of whether clustering of moderately adverse levels of serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was detectable in children and young adults. Significant clustering of these factors was observed in young men (ages 18-24 years) (Observed/Expected [O/E] ratio = 1.5, p = 0.014), whereas in young women or children no clustering greater than due to chance was found. In males, clustering tended to increase with age. Compared to young women, young men had a higher relative intake of dietary fat, and smoked and used alcohol more often. Compared to men without risk factors, the men at risk were significantly more obese, consumed more dietary fat, and smoked more often. The highest degree of clustering was seen in the highest quartile for the subscapular skinfold thickness (O/E ratio = 2.4). In conclusion, high LDL-C, low HDL-C, and high DBP cluster in young adult males. The clear sex difference observed in clustering may be one of the causes for the susceptibility of adult men to CHD. Ensifer (Sinorhizobium) arboris is a symbiont of salt-tolerant leguminous trees in the genera Acacia and Prosopis that are utilized in the prevention of soil erosion and desertification and in phytoremediation of salinized soil. Signalling between the plant and the rhizobia is essential for the formation of effective symbiosis that increases the success of reclaiming saline sites. We assessed the effect of salt stress on the growth and the production of lipochitooligosaccharide signalling molecules (LCOs) of S. arboris HAMBI 2361, an LCO-overproducing derivative of the S. arboris type strain HAMBI 1552. The strain tolerated NaCl up to 750 mM. To obtain both qualitative and quantitative information on the LCO production under salt stress, we devised a method where LCOs were differentially labelled by stable isotopes of nitrogen, (14)N and (15)N, and analysed by mass spectrometry. Under control conditions, the strain produced altogether 27 structural LCO variants. In 380 mM NaCl, 13 LCO variants were produced in detectable amounts, and six of these were reliably quantified, ranging from one-tenth to one-third of the non-stressed one.

The aim of this study was to examine how the diagnosis of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in one child affects the consumption patterns of milk and fat among nondiabetic siblings. Food habits of 478 Finnish nondiabetic siblings (3–19 years) of children with IDDM ( 12 years). As compared with population-based control subjects, the use of high-and low-fat milk, butter on bread, and butter and margarines in food preparation was less common and the use of skim milk, margarines on bread, and oils in food preparation more common among the nondiabetic siblings 2 years after the diagnosis of IDDM in the proband. The diagnosis of IDDM in a child has significant and beneficial effects on the choice of the type of milk and dietary fat of his/her siblings. Farmers and families in lower socioeconomic groups need more attention to modify the diet after the diagnosis of IDDM in a child.

Samples from the middle gluteal muscle of 3-7-year-old racing reindeer were taken before (7 reindeer) and at the end of the racing season (12 reindeer) for determination of fibre type composition, activities of citrate synthase (CS), 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (HAD) and the glycogen content. Muscle samples were also taken from 7 female and 18 male reindeer of same age for histochemical determination of muscle fibre composition. During the racing season the fibre type composition remained unchanged as did the activities of CS and HAD. The high activities of CS and HAD together with the high intensity in the NADH-dehydrogenase stain indicate that the reindeer muscle has a high oxidative capacity. The glycogen content increased during the winter which can explain the increasing tendency in the transverse fibre area. The racing reindeer had a lower percentage of type I fibres and a higher percentage of type IIA fibres than the ordinary male reindeer. The differences in the fibre type composition suggest that the racing reindeer represent a selected reindeer population.

The activities of lysosomal enzymes, such as beta-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase, have been shown to increase in muscle after endurance exercise. We examined whether measurable activities of lysosomal enzymes are present in equine plasma and whether the exercise-induced changes in the muscle are reflected in plasma. Six trained Standardbred trotters performed three exercise bouts with 1 h intervals and the same procedure was repeated 3 days later. Venous blood samples and muscle biopsies from the middle gluteal muscle were taken before and after exercise. The activities of beta-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase were measured both from plasma and muscle specimens. Cell infiltration into the muscle after exercise was evaluated by the DNA content and histochemically by haematoxylin stain. The activity of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase in plasma was increased immediately after exercise, but had returned to the basal level at 4 h. N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase in muscle and beta-glucuronidase in muscle and plasma increased 2 days after exercise and returned to the basal level on day 3. A similar pattern was seen when the exercise protocol was repeated 3 days later, except that the activities continued to increase during the 3 days after exercise. The DNA content in muscle correlated with beta-glucuronidase in muscle and plasma and with the N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase in muscle indicating that the activities reflect the infiltration of phagocytes into the exercise-injured muscle. It can be concluded that the activities of the lysosomal enzymes in plasma increase after exercise and that the changes are mainly due to a simultaneous increase in the number of neutrophils. Therefore, plasma activities of the lysosomal enzymes are poor indicators of exercise-induced muscle damage.

The authors studied the occurrence of common lifestyle risk factors, namely, nonprudent diet, smoking, physical inactivity, and frequent inebriation by alcohol in a cohort of young adults aged 18, 21, and 24 years (n = 484) as part of the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study in 1986. Risk habits showed significant clustering; the number of subjects was greater than expected in groups with zero and three of four risk habits and less than expected in the group with only one or two risk habits. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to find independent determinants for this clustering from a set of socioeconomic, demographic, and behavioral (type A components) determinants. The logistic model suggested several independent risk factors for risk habit clustering. These included male sex, aggressiveness, and past unemployment. Paying a lot of attention to health habits, higher education (being a student), good self-perceived health, and a high sense of responsibility seemed to be protective factors against risk habit clustering. The accumulation of risk habits was also associated with an atherogenic lipid and blood pressure profile (clustering of high density lipoprotein cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio, triglycerides, and diastolic blood pressure in their extreme tertiles). These findings show that common risk habits cluster among young adults. Knowledge about the determinants of this clustering will aid in the planning of future preventive strategies against cardiovascular diseases in young people.

The differences between higher and lower socio-economic groups in food consumption, energy intake and nutrient density of the diet of Finnish 9- to 15-year-old children were examined in a study performed within the project entitled Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns. Data on food consumption were collected using the 48-hour recall method. Family's socio-economic status was defined according to the father's educational level, his occupation, and family income. Children of families with higher socio-economic status used more fruit, low-fat milk, soft vegetable margarine and less high-fat milk, butter, rye products and coffee than did the children of families with lower socioeconomic status. Consequently, the main differences appeared in the fat, vitamin D, vitamin C and fatty acid content of the diet. Differences in energy intake and in mineral density of the diet were minor. If these childhood dietary differences remain in adulthood, it is possible that the present disparity between socio-economic groups in mortality from coronary heart disease will not disappear.

Summary The distribution of lactate between blood cells and plasma, lactate concentration in whole blood and plasma, concentration of haemoglobin and packed cell volume (PCV) were measured in Standardbred and Finnhorse trotters. Red blood cell (RBC) lactate was calculated from whole blood and plasma lactate concentrations and PCV. Plasma lactate concentration correlated positively with whole blood lactate concentration over a range of exercise intensities (r = 0.972; P < 0.001). Similarly, plasma lactate concentration correlated with the calculated RBC lactate concentration both after the standardised submaximal exercise test (SET) and races, although there was individual variation in gradients. The slope of regression after the SET increased with sampling time, but such an effect was not found after the races. The mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration did not show any correlation with RBC lactate concentration. Based on these results, we suggest that transport of lactate to erythrocytes occurs rapidly and is mainly determined by plasma lactate concentration. The great variation between individuals and individual similarity of plasma-cell concentration differences after submaximal and maximal exercise indicates that distribution of lactate between plasma and erythrocytes depends not only on plasma lactate concentration. Other factors, such as lactate transporter, may be important.

Summary Six adult Finnhorse trotters performed a standardised exercise test (SET) on a treadmill and a 4000 m maximal exercise test (MET) on a racetrack before, immediately and 13 weeks after a 14 week treatment with nandrolone laurate. Six other trotters served as controls. All horses were trained during the whole experiment. Blood lactate concentration, V200 VLa4 and red cell volume (CV) were determined in connection to the SET and blood lactate concentration, heart rate and performance time in the MET. All horses significantly improved their performance in the MET, but no differences were observed between the 2 groups. Nandrolone treatment caused a significant (P 0.05) in either of the groups. The results indicate that CV was the only variable that predicted performance during the last 1000 m of the maximal test, whereas indicators of aerobic capacity, like V200 and VLa4, were of minor value. In the control group, the increase in the blood lactate concentration in the SET correlated positively with the total performance time (r=635; P

Clustering and tracking of serum total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and diastolic blood pressure were studied in children and young adults. "High-risk" individuals were defined as those having these risk factors at the age and sex specific upper tertile (lowest tertile for HDL-C). Among older boys risk factors occurred at adverse levels more often than expected by chance. Cluster-tracking was assessed as the probability of remaining in the extreme tertiles during follow-up. Approximately 25% of subjects initially at "risk" remained there for 6 years. Subjects who became high-risk individuals during the follow-up expressed greater increase in obesity indices, started to consume more saturated fat and cholesterol and became physically active less often compared to those subjects who were initially at risk, but no longer at the follow-up.

The intakes of nitrate and nitrite of children and their parents from food and drinking water were estimated in a Finnish nation-wide case-control study on the epidemiology of Type 1 diabetes. The study population consisted of 684 case and 595 control children; 548 case-control pairs of fathers; and 620 case-control pairs of mothers. The consumption frequencies of foods which are important sources of nitrate and nitrite were assessed by structured questionnaire. Nitrate and nitrite concentration data were collected from Finnish water works. Diabetic children's and their mothers' daily dietary intake of nitrite was greater compared with that of control children and mothers (for case and control children 0.9 mg vs 0.8 mg, for case and control mothers 0.9 mg vs 0.8 mg, p < 0.001). Case mothers compared with control mothers received less (p < 0.05) nitrate from their diet. No differences were observed in the intake of nitrate or nitrite from drinking water. Dietary nitrite intake of children (odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the second, third, and fourth quartile 1.16, 0.82-1.65; 1.49, 1.06-2.10; 2.32, 1.67-3.24, respectively) and mothers (odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the second, third, and fourth quartile 1.15, 0.76-1.74; 1.29, 0.87-1.91; 1.98, 1.35-2.90, respectively) was positively associated with the risk for Type 1 diabetes independently from length of mother's education, child's or mother's age, place of residence or mother's smoking status.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Associations of infant feeding patterns and milk consumption with cow's milk protein antibody titres were studied in 697 newly-diagnosed diabetic children, 415 sibling-control children and 86 birth-date-and sex-matched population-based control children in the nationwide “Childhood Diabetes in Finland” study. IgA and IgG antibody titres to the proteins of cow's milk formula, BLG and BSA, and IgM antibody titres to cow's milk formula proteins were measured by ELISA. Several inverse correlations were observed between the duration of breast-feeding or age at introduction of dairy products and antibody titres, and positive correlations were observed between milk consumption and antibody titres in all three populations studied. Multivariate analyses which included the infant feeding variables, milk consumption and current age simultaneously showed that the earlier the introduction of dairy products and the greater the consumption of milk was, the higher several antibody titres were. High IgA antibody titres to cow's milk formula were associated with a greater risk of IDDM both among diabeticpopulation-control and diabetic-sibling-control pairs when adjusted for other cow's milk antibody titres, dietary variables and in diabetic-sibling-control pairs also for ICA. The results suggest that young age at introduction of dairy products and high milk consumption during childhood increase the levels of cow's milk antibodies and that high IgA antibodies to cow's milk formula are independently associated with increased risk of IDDM.

Obesity from childhood to adulthood is associated with adverse health later in life. Increased youth BMI is a risk factor for later obesity, but it is unknown whether identification of other risk factors, including recently discovered genetic markers, would help to identify children at risk of developing adult obesity.Our objective was to examine the childhood environmental and genetic predictors of adult obesity.We followed 2119 individuals of the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study for up to 27 yr since baseline (1980, age 3-18 yr).We evaluated adult obesity [body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m(2)].The independent predictors (P0.05) of adult obesity included childhood BMI, C-reactive protein (CRP), family income (inverse), mother's BMI, and polymorphisms near genes TFAP2B, LRRN6C, and FLJ35579. A risk assessment based on childhood BMI, mother's BMI, and family income was superior in predicting obesity compared with the approach using data only on BMI (C-statistics 0.751 vs. 0.772, P = 0.0015). Inclusion of data on childhood CRP and novel genetic variants for BMI did not incrementally improve C-value (0.779, P = 0.16). A nonlaboratory risk score (childhood BMI, mother's BMI, and family income) predicted adult obesity in all age groups between 3-18 yr (P always0.001).Childhood BMI, CRP, family income (inversely), mother's BMI, and polymorphisms near genes FLJ35779, TFAP2B, and LRRN6C are independently related to adulthood obesity. However, because genetic risk markers and CRP only marginally improve the prediction, our results indicate that children at high risk of adult obesity can be identified using a simple non-laboratory-based risk assessment.

Associations between infant-feeding patterns and risk of IDDM were investigated in a nationwide Finnish case-control study of 690 IDDM children

To identify elements of continuity and change from traditional meal patterns characterizing Finland before World War II, accounts of “typical workday” eating were elicited from 102 married women in Helsinki in 1984. Since the 1920s Finnish breakfast has changed from a prepared meal into a lighter eating event differing significantly from lunch and dinner. Earlier the three meals were simitar. The basic structure of lunch and dinner has not changed. Items used in traditional meals are still included. However, the hot meat/fish dish, instead of cereals and potatoes, is now the most important component. Total number of daily meals has decreased. None of the women followed the traditional pattern of three prepared meals. Half ate lunch and dinner and a snack‐type breakfast. The others skipped lunch or dinner.

Dietary intakes of nitrate and nitrite of 1212 Finns aged 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24 years were calculated using food consumption data obtained by the 48‐hour recall method in 1986, in connection with the Study on Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns. Files on nitrate and nitrite content of foods and water were compiled for this study. The mean daily intakes of nitrate (NO− 3) and nitrite (NO− 2) from food were 54.0 mg and 1.4 mg, respectively. Vegetables including potatoes contributed 86% of nitrate intake and meat products 69% of the nitrite intake. If two litres of water within the mode concentration class of nitrate and nitrite were used, the intake of nitrate from water would have been between 1.0 and 2.0 mg and the intake of nitrite between 0.0 and 0.2 mg.

Genetic lactase nonpersistence may influence calcium intake and thereby bone health. We investigated in the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finn Study whether young adults aged 31-46 years with the C/C(-13910) genotype are more susceptible to reduced bone phenotypes, low-energy fractures, and low calcium intake than subjects with other lactase genotypes. We also analyzed the gene-environment interactions on bone with calcium intake and physical activity. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography bone traits were measured from the distal and shaft sites of the radius and tibia. The total number of those subjects whose nondominant forearm was measured and the lactase genotype was defined was 1551. Information on diet, lifestyle factors, and fractures was collected with questionnaires. The mean intake of calcium was the lowest in men with the C/C(-13910) genotype (P = 0.001). Men with the T/T(-13910) genotype had ~3% higher trabecular density at the distal radius and distal tibia compared to other lactase genotypes (P = 0.03 and 0.02, respectively). In women, we found no evidence of the gene effect at the radius and tibia. No major interactions of the C/T(-13910) polymorphism with calcium intake or physical activity on bone phenotypes were found in either sex. In conclusion, the C/T(-13910) polymorphism was associated with trabecular density at the distal radius and tibia in men. These differences may be due to the differences in calcium intake between the lactase genotypes.
